Being immortal and looking like you are 100 years old or being immortal and looking like you are 10 years old?

My first thought was 10, but then I realized you could never go anywhere without people stopping you to ask if you were lost and where your parents were. I can see that getting really old really quickly. So I’ll say 100.

10 vs 100: 100 -- medical advances will eventually fix any problems and make me look young and sexy, but a ten year old doesn't have their full mental faculties yet or sexual capabilities

Hmm, neither a hundred-year-old nor a ten-year-old are generally particularly strong physically, so if someone wanted to attack me I might have problems. However, if you only look that age but are actually not physically as weak as you would be at that age, I can't help but keep thinking of Babette from Skyrim and want to look ten years old (okay, so Babette is a vampire which is why she looks like a small child - because that's how old she was when she got bitten, but still...). I suppose it depends whether the physical/mental infirmities of old age actually show up, or whether I just look all wrinkly and stuff. After all, if I'm only gonna look that age, maybe I can still be all there underneath.

But then, I wouldn't want to be immortal in the first place. After all, to live forever is to ultimately be alone forever, unless you can find someone else who's also immortal, and then you'd probably get fed up of each other after a few decades/centuries/millennia...

Lightning Bolt is more fun to say and shout randomly.  

Fireball!  I specialize in point-blank fireballs.

#1 The All-American from Hardee's. Split hotdog on a thick burger WITH kettle potatochips and all the fixings.

#2 Sky-Castle. I had too much fun owning one in an evil themed game in D&D to not want one again. And who says I can't sink it in the ocean and make it the other? As long as I can bubble it, of course

#3 It depends on if I'd still retain my mind and strength, or if I'd 100% be either age. IF that's the case, then I suppose 100.

#4 Lightning-Bolt I'll be the insane immortal old man throwing lightning from my Sky-Castle, eating my All-American.

Fireball, seems more useful.

I suppose it depends on the situation...I feel like Lightning Bolt might be more fun, but then Fireball is something of a classic...hmm, can I chuck a Fireball that crackles with lightning? Or actually...lightning cna still set stuff on fire, just not quite in the same way as a Fireball. And I could do my own Ominous Lightning at crepy intervals. Maybe I could set up a spooky mansion on a hill and cast lightning as people were walking up to it and stuff, and freak them out >:).

Being able to hear other people’s thoughts but only when they think something positive about you or being able to hear other people’s thoughts but only when they think something negative about you?

I'll take being able to hear people but only when they're not thinking about me.

It would be horrible to know what people actually thought about you.

If I had to pick I’d say positive but I’d honestly rather have neither.

Positive would certainly build on my self-confidence, but I'd choose negative because I can't change if people don't tell me what I'm doing wrong, and I'm always worried people aren't telling me what I'm doing wrong…

Well hearing those positive thoughts just sounds lovely!

I’d go with positive. I’m already self-critical enough, I’m not sure I want he affirmation of others when it comes to my doubt.

I'd go positive.  It would help me be more upbeat to help others also be upbeat.

Only hearing the positive, that way if its all silent you know there could be negative.

Wizard or sorcerer?

I don’t know the difference but still feel the answer is clearly sorcerer.

That was fun, but I don’t want to keep all the fun for myself. Someone else can ask the questions next week.

At least in DnD a wizard is someone who studies to learn magic but the sorcerer innately is able to cast spells.  So the wizard over time will know more spells but the sorcerer is able to cast a limited set of spells capped only by their what their level allows.   Sorcerer's are thought to be able to innately cast spells because they have some dragon ancestors.  

Having said all that I'd go sorcerer

Based on DnD 4th Edition, Sorcerer. I'm actually playing one in an ongoing forum-based game right now and she's super-fun (though this isn't entirely down to her class...that just helps) :D. Random crazy magic for the fun!

If I'm RPing, probably the Dark Side...because lightning! And throwing people off cliffs and stuff >:). And those Lightsiders can get pretty dark in their own way, messing with people's heads and stuff. So nurrh :P.

Can't speak for Donner, but the D&D fireball spell (and it's associated alternates) is notorious (at least in our games) for being used in a way that results in damage to the party. Basically, people don't understand just how much volume it actually takes up when they cast it in a small hallway…

I had a mage in White Wolf who's favorite spell was fireball.  Jnfortunately, most of the times he was able to cast it, it would only be effective at point blank.  So he also cast protective spells on himself first.  The end result was usually that he was almost dead, but the enemies were defeated.

Considering it's not an X but the Greek letter Chi (which happens to look like an X), the term "Xmas" has bugged me since I found that out, and I didn't much like it before then anyway. I suppose I'd go with "Merry Christmas" for that reason, since despite not being remotely religious and knowing that season's not-remotely-Christian origins I do still refer to the 25th December as "Christmas"...

I've been a fan of the two handed sword.  

Depends on the setting, but going by previous experiences I tend to favour a dual-wielding approach, if possible...

Well yeah, if there's an option to hide at the back and shoot stuff I'm fairly likely to take that one. Like I said, it depends on the setting (you're highly unlikely to see me taking a melée approach in an ARPG, for example) ;).

Just my personal favorite, though I'm always torn between that and gen. 1 because I was the right age for gen. 1 when it hit.  My sister is the biggest Pokemon fan I know and she was the right age for gen. 3 when that hit so that probably has a lot to do with it. Gen. 4 definitely brought a lot of great stuff too but by the time it came out I was losing interest.

Also, yeah I went with the 1 character answer as a friendly joke.

I think most people who played have a prefferance to the gen that was current at the time that they were in the 9-13 age range, since I think that's the big target audience for the actual games. Of course, there are exceptions. I quite like Pokemon Black/White, and I was way past target audience range by then.

For my big favorite, that would be Gen 2. There were plenty of pokemon where you could catch most of the current pokedex without too greatly relying on another game, and there wasn't an obsene number of pokemon just yet.

I have always been too old to be the target age range for any generation (currently 37, so I was 16-ish when Red/Blue released).

I played up to Diamond/Pearl and I love me some Pokemon Go but I don't have a favourite generation. Favourite Pokemon, yep. But every generation has at least a couple of mons that I think are ridiculous and stupid so I can't say any gen is better than the others.

Gotta be Gen 1 for me. I am one of the purists that got into it at the beggining, found gen 2 facinating and then quickly got annoyed with how fast other mon came out and wanted them to get off my lawn.

I'll drink either if they're decaf, but I'd rather have latte than cappuccino and my tea of choice is Earl Grey, hot.

Hot chocolate always sounds (and smells) so good, but enviably disappoints me for no reason I can work out. I always regret drinking it straight away afterwards and wish I'd picked something else. And I LOVE chocolate, so it doesn't make sense.

Green tea is probably my favourite tea, hot or iced. We burn through roughly a gallon every two days of our brewed black iced tea, the husband and I. As for coffee, I prefer the beverages that add more and more milk, so latte is best, I guess. Add in caramel and I'm forever yours!

one thing we had recently in Philadelphia was a brown sugar coffee, which was naturally delicious. Beyond that, cocoa is a delight and only occasionally disappoints.

In short, I have a gambling problem and London Fog is best hot beverage.

Wake up. I set my alarm at the latest possible time for me to where I must get up to be able to leave on time without goofing around. So hitting the snooze would put me at 9 minutes behind schedule.

Hit the snooze button exactly twice. (The snooze on my phone is only 5 min).

Snooze on weekdays, get up without snooze on weekend (although I sleep in 2 hours later on the weekend)

Depends on the day. Mon-thurs is typically morning showering. Saturday is evening.

Night! Then I can go to bed clean. And don’t take as much time getting ready in the morning.

Every morning because without a shower I can’t wake up.

But also frequently in the evening because I play ultimate 3-4 nights a week and don’t want to go to bed stinky and gross.

Wake up, I don't trust myself to hit the snooze button. My exwife used to hit the snooze over and over and over, it drove me nuts.

Lose sense of smell and gain an extraordinary sense of direction.   Currently my sense of smell isn’t great anyways and often I have no good sense of direction so it would be positive entirely for me.  

I already have no sense of smell, but I'll certainly take the sense of direction.

I also have no sense of smell (literally none), so it's easy to pick what to lose, my sense of humor. I have no need to know exactly what the balance between my 4 humors is at any given moment, that quackery having been replaced with actual ducks long ago.

As you can tell from above I already have superhuman levels of Humour, and I can always tell which way is forward so I'm not sure a Sense of Direction would be great for me either.... hmmm.

Hello Peoples!

I was just googling my usual username "matchstickman" and came across this thread, why are you all talking about me?

I only just found out about Sentinels of the Multiverse a few days ago, a huge box of stuff just arrived at my door with no warning, just a piece of paper with this website address and my perfered username written on it. Strangely enough, when I decided to try logging into that account I tried my usual password and it worked!

Since so many people said fantasy, what is your favorite magic system in a novel?

I don’t read novels…

I’ve been a fan of the Shannara series for that. 

In an novel? None. They don't go into enough detail for me to mess around with.

I like reading about magic systems in RPGs (even if I'm never going to play them!) because I get to look at the bare bones.

What’s your favorite magic system in a game?

Still a fan of D&D overall so far.  

We used a home-brewed varient of Everway that I thought had a fun and entertaining magic system. It allowed for a great deal of flexibility and use of imagination. 

Of course, it's a diceless system with very little structure, and you have to put a lot of trust in your GM, so it's probably not something most folks are going to want to try. 

My favorite magic system in a game... Anima: Beyond Fantasy is pretty neat, it has a magic pool like video games. However characters only regain so much of their mana pool each day so they cannot launch spells constantly.

On a dungeon raid, what type of role would you play?

To answer yesterday's question, I guess I would go for Dungeon World's magic system right now- clean, simple but with enough player choice to keep it interesting.

For a dungeon raid? I guess I would be an archer sitting at the back plinking away with poisoned arrows, I think that role is called Damage Dealer, but I'm not that big a fan of MMOs.

If it's a rule or text book that I will want to search quickly for certain terms then it's digital for me.

I do not have a favorite in number.   I follow a few sports so the numbers are a bit interchangeable over time.   Though I could see that being the reason someone has a favorite number as well.

I think the worst one was genuinely excited for Shadow the Hedgehog back in the day. As a kid, $60 for a game you realize is no fun by the second level is a really hard lesson.

On the board-gaming side, while I love the theme of Red Dragon Inn, I've now bought a near complete set that's seen play maybe once or twice.

PC gaming mostly, but I sure do like the switch!

Console gaming because it’s a more consistent experience.

In all honesty, it really does depend on the game.

Like if I'm in a platforming mood, I'm going to choose console.

If I'm looking for almost any kind of online experience(MMOs and the like) then PC might be a better time.

RPGs? I like mine on handheld systems normaly, so if need be I can just pick it up and play at any point, filling up the tiny moments of my day that I'm waiting for something with glorious vidiya.

For SotM? Until Handelabra decides to put it on the Switch, it's strictly on the PC for me.

Sod the replicators - how about a holodeck? :D (although replicators would be cool)

Also...portal guns*! And the special boot thingys that let you fall as far as you like without taking any damage.

And probably robot dinosaurs or something. Proper ones, with their own proper AI who stomp around doing dinosaur-y things. Ooh, Mr Chomps. A whole army of him! :D

*Okay, so this may be somewhat impractical given the material that portalable surfaces need to be made of, but still...

I'm with Ameena: Portal Guns. Or other fictional ways to transport individuals instantly from one place to another! :-)

Teleporter pads of some means would be awesome. I'd prefer them to portal guns since from what I know of them from the Portal games, to get a proper use of them you'd have to lay down a portal, go ALLLLLL the way to where you want it to end up, and lay down a second one. If ou want to travel somewhere within eyesight then it's great, but long-range teleportation wouldn't really be worth it for longer distances in most cases.

But with teleporter pads you could just make your way to your local pad, pop in the coordinates to the one that best fits your needs of where you're destination is, and you're there!

Often I feel Monday’s are my most productive out of the week at work. 

Tuesday are the worst to me. On Mondays I still have enthusiasm for a new week, and the energy to get work done.

The question is late today, what's the best excuse you've heard/used for being late?

So in high school in Toronto (Canada), you need to provide a note from your parents whenever you are late and/or absent, in order to explain being late/absent from school.  However, once you turn 18, you're legally an adult and so you write your own note (no parents required)...

A friend of mine, arriving 15 minutes late to school one day, decided to have a little fun with his note (since he had turned 18).  His note explained that the reason he was late was because he had to travel back in time in order to stop a Nazi invasion of Australia.  He briefly detailed some of his exploits and explained that when travelling 65-odd years back to the present, it's hard to get the timing just right and as a result he was late for class.

Now, technically the teacher had to accept that explanation anyway.  But seeing as the class he had been late for was creative writing, she was more than happy to take his note as is. 

That is such a good excuse that everyone else felt their excuses would pale beside it. Yep. That's definitely my excuse why no one else responded.

Do you recycle? Does your local government make it easier for you to do so?

Yes I recycle.   Yes and no.   Waste Management is a public utility but not all of them offer recycling.   The area I’m in does at least but I know that’s not the case everywhere in this city.  

Yes I recycle but the building I live in doesn’t have a place for recycling. So I have to bring all my recyclables over to my parents house whenever I go there… which is a bit annoying.

The town I live in has an decent recycling program overall.

Yeah, every house gets a supply of large clear plastic bags for stuff like paper/card, plastic, cans, etc, and a large brown bin outside the house for "garden waste" or whatever you want to call it. There are also recycling bins in plenty of places, like in town centres and stuff, labelled for specific types of rubbish (paper, glass, etc). Generally there's plenty of encouragement to recycle stuff, really, which is nice :).

Have you ever been to the theatre? What did you see?

I’ve been a few different theatres but it’s not a frequent thing.  Most recently saw a production of Hair.  Didn’t know too much about it before seeing it beyond being anti Vietnam War.  

Yeah, been to see a few musicals in London, and a few stand-ups at the theatre nearest to where I live.

Edit - Oh, and a couple of Shakespeare plays when I was at school (one of which was performed at the Globe).

There's a local dinner-and-a-show place (Beef and Boards) that spouse and I attend every month or two with her mom. They do all kinds of shows, mostly musicals, with both local and touring teams of performers. 

(We've also hit various shows both on Broadway and off, in New York, Chicago, and here in Indianapolis, over the years.)

Living in Toronto, the Stratford Festival is always something I love to get out to when I can (though usually only every other year).

It's been years since I've been to the theatre, when i did go it was usually to see a Gilbert and Sullivan play. The most interesting theatre I went to was the Minack, an outdoor theatre right by the sea.

Jeysie's answer reminded me of an odd teacher I had for music, he would start hoovering in the middle of practice, or disappear into a cupboard for 20 minutes while the class was doing a work sheet, rumour among the pupils was he was drunk. Looking back on it I realise that every class had the same stories, and not every class was taught at the same time so he was just doing the same odd things repeatedly to keep people talking about his class and looking forward to finding out what odd thing he would do next. I can't rememebr jack about the classes themselves except one test where we were identifying pieces of music he had recorded and Blueberry Hill came on, complete with chorus, and he said he hoped no one scored zero points for this question.

Did you have a teacher at school who did odd things? Do you just have a single memorable incident from an otherwise ordinary class?

I had geometry teacher who certainly kept things interesting.    He threw a chalkboard eraser at someone wandering the halls and broke a ruler trying to talk about lines intersecting with shapes by jamming it into a chalkboard.  He was quite the character.  

With a student body of less than fifty  my high school experience was lousy with unusual experiences, but my math teacher (the one math teacher in the school,) took the cake. I was a fast student, so he would often try to distract me from my worksheets to keep me on pace with the other students, through songs, stories, throwing balls at me, etc.. On more than one ocassion, when I finished my work for the period he gave me his car keys and credit card and asked me to run down to the gas station to fill up his car and get him a Pepsi. 

It was a great class.

I'm with Ario in having a small school. (Our class was 26 kids, and it was the largest the school had seen.) 

We had a newer high school math teacher who was a great character. He wanted to make sure some of us were as ready for college as he could. He created a pre-calc class just for us, something the school had never seen. The six of us he was aiming the class at signed up for beginning guitar as a joke. (Small school...) We got to class the first day and asked where the guitars were. He said there was a lot we needed to understand before we could play, and proceeded to talk about math and music. We pretty much forgot about the beginning guitar joke until the last day of class, when he showed up with a guitar... :-D 

He also had an eye that he was blind in due to an incident with a wood chip while splitting wood when he was younger. He would say that it now looked backwards. When he'd be writing on the board, one of us would be quietly messing around and he would call us on it, without ever turning around! It was awesome! :-) (I'm sure we just weren't as quiet as we thought, but I just loved how he played it up. ;-) 

Hmm, trying to remember any weird/silly things any of my teachers did. Can remember one minor incident involving one teacher, who used a phrase I still find very amusing - "I've just introduced my knee to the desk!" (said whilst standing by the desk rubbing said knee, and preceded by "ouch..." :D).

I had a chemistry teacher in high school who would go into the back room, come out in a clown nose/rainbow wig and hand out licorice to the class.

Always pretended he was another person. Called him Rainbow Man. To this day, has yet to catch him.

First day of class for AP US History, our teacher came in singing. "Another Opening, Another Show!" He was irrepressibly geeky. And a Quaker.

First day of class for Chemistry, our teacher came in, waited for the class to quiet down, and then, without any other introduction or preamble,  ordered us to sit in alphabetical order, starting in the front left and going backwards, then on to the adjoining column, etc. He then told us how many minutes we had to complete the task and walked out of the room. He came back in after that many minutes and proceeded teaching.

It looks like teachers are human too, who would have thunk it?

Fallout 76! The embargo on Bethesda's press weekend was lifted yesterday, so there was a lot of new video released showing off the game. Do you have any interest in this game? Have you played any of the previous Fallout games?

I have dropped a huge amount of time into the previous Fallout games (and love the post-apoc genre as a whole), but have little to no interest in playing this one, not a big fan of online games, I don't like that there's a time when the servers will go and I'll no longer have access to my game.

I have interest but I still haven’t played Fallout 4 so I’m not sure I want to dive into this newer installment 

I prefer the Fallout table-top RPG my friend developed with one of his online buddies.

What's a Fallout?  We don't get Netflix out here in Vault 62.

Since my favourite genre is (and always has been) Fantasy, I've played every single Elder Scrolls online (at least, the ones made directly by Bethesda - Elder Scrolls Online doesn't count :P), and have never felt any particular interest in the Fallout series. But I look forward to hearing about Elder Scrolls VI and hope it has a decent UI and less hand-holding and quest linearity this time (bring back the Morrowind UI!) :P.

Lunch or dinner. I've become less and less of a breakfast person over they years, mainly since I hate having to force myself to eat something just as I get up.

Radios! Do you ever listen to conventional radios stations with DJs/announcers any more? Or do you listen to music/programs via apps/websites?

I can't remember the last time I listened to a radio, I don't think I even own a device that could receive the signals anymore.

My car still has a radio, but I only use it to pipe podcasts or music from my player. I'll occasionally try a radio station – mostly out of curiosity – but it’s not more than once every couple of months.

I listen to XM aka Satilite radio in my car since there are fewer commercials and better audio quality.   At home I don’t listen to much of any radio. 

Radio in the car if I'm not listening to music from my phone (or The Letters Page).

Dr Who! The new series of Dr Who started last Sunday, what is your realtionship to the show? Do you watch it? Did you watch the original serieses? Is it something you have never heard of?

I love the show. I watched the original serieses and went to a few conventions "back in the day". I feel the new stuff is a good continuation and I've had fun watching the Doctor evolve into this latest regeneration.

I frequently find Doctor Who entertaining -- and occassionally brilliant -- but there are enough things about it I don't enjoy that I don't consider myself a fan. I caught some of the early stuff when I was a kid, but it wasn't readily available to us so I could't watch with any regularity.

My spouse is a huge fan of New Who, though! (But she refuses to watch the original serieses.)

I know of Dr Who but have never watched the series. 

I watch the new series and mostly enjoy it. Haven't seen much of the original series.

I've seen bits and pieces of the older series - we had a couple on video when I was a kid and they occasionally showed some on TV. I've still never seen a full episode/series of Two, Five, or Six, but I've seen clips of them and some other bits and pieces, and I've also seen every Doctors' death scene. Since I've actually been alive during its return, I've seen every episode since they brought it back in 2005. And I like this latest reincarnation and am looking forward to tonight's episode :D.

Fortunately, I have the option to work from home. So, unless I'm completely out cold, I'll usually take a light day at home and get some stuff done while taking it easy. Make sure things aren't on fire and catch up with my Netflix backlog.

Throw something on Netflix that's interesting enough to keep my mind occupied, but easy enough to fall asleep watching.

Also, hot toddies.  (If I have multiple in one day, I usually only add the whisky to one of them).

Both kickstarter's overfunded by at least 800%, my second favourite variant of the void guard was released, and I had a very, very nice curry for dinner.

I applied for a new job, had left-over pizza for lunch and dinner, saw an amazing independent sci-fi film (Prospect) at a local film festival, played with our cats, was amazed and entertained by the Spirit Island Kickstarter... :-\ 

Highs and lows, but overall pretty darn good. ;-)

The second KS he's talking about was for the next edition of the Savage Worlds RPG. Funded a $15K goal in around 5-7 minutes, and broke all Day 1 Stretch Goals, the max which was at $150K.

My day was fine, got better after I got out of work with all the crazy stuff that happened. Today though I have a dentist's appointment after work(which I really don't mind, they always numb me up really well so I don't feel anything), and after that I have a Deadlands game to run.

I love me a good comedy festival, or even a comedy tent at a music festival, you can find some "big" acts there trying new stuff or some really great smaller acts trying to get heard. And because you're all there for (ostensibly) the same thing you rarely get people who go to ruin the act on purpose. It's a fun day out.

I also go to these gaming festivals -- they call them "conventions" -- where people play lots of game... ;-)

Funfairs! Did you ever go to a funfair when you were young? Do you go to them now? What's you're favourite ride/attraction there?

Helter Skelters! Wizzing round in circles in a sack to crash into a coconut mat at the bottom was almost the most fun thing to do at the Circus.

I’ve been to various carnivals and circuses as a kid but I can’t say any of them were particularly memorable.   Seeing what was apparently one of the last   Ringling Bros shows was fairly memorable though I doubt my 2 year old will recall much from it.  

We take the niblings to them on occasion, but I didn't do it much when I was a kid. No real favorites, myself, although the "fun houses" are some of my least favorite things. 

And naturally the niblings love them, so I end up going into them a lot... :-\ Totally worth it! :-D

My local grocery store often sells in its deli this ridiculously tasty Vermont mac & cheese bake I became addicted to, to the point where the clerks now lightly tease me about ordering it every time I go grocery shopping. :3

More often then not, it's a good and well prepared cheese burger. You'd be surprised how hard it is to find the perfect burger.

For something a little out of the ordinary: the Buffalo Calamari this little Italian place downtown makes. It's the exact same thing as their regular calamari, but they then coat it with buffalo sauce. I find myself craving it every so-often.

Those all sound delicious!

Although I absolutely adore a nice vindaloo, the one food I cannot resist is Ice Cream. So many lovely flavours to combine.

Well, all the other ones in the UK of course, and a bunch of other European flags. I know a couple of African ones (Kenya and South Africa come to mind), and can probably recognise Australia and New Zealand (though may get confused as to which is which). Also know Canada, the US, Brazil...Chile too, I think, thanks to Top Gear. What other continents are there...oh yeah, Asia...yeah I know some Asian flags too (at least India, Japan, China, South Korea, and maybe a couple of others).

Yeah, so...actually more than I might first have thought :D.

Upwards of a dozen.  Mostly ones with 2 colors or less.

I would say I know about 10-15 flags outside of my country, and could probably tell you where a few more came from if I saw them.

In a similar camp, somehwere around and possibly above 10.

I know my home flag (and other UK ones) and a handful of other nearby countries, the further you get away the less likely I am to know it, until we get right on the other side of the world, I know my Australian and new Zealand flags, it's just everything inbetween that's a blur!

Libraries! When was the last time you used one? Do you ever check physical books out of them or do you/can you check out digital books? Do you think libraries will die out as people digital books become a bigger thing?

I haven't been to the library for a couple of months. I prefer physical books to digital, so I've never checked a digital book out. I think libraries are probably going to continue to see drops in their circulation numbers due to digital versions of books. However, hopefully they will be able to find ways to adapt and stay relevant to their communities.

I went to the library last weekend.  I’m not sure if this library has digital books offhand I’ve only checked out physical books.  I think there many be fewer libraries over time but I don’t see them completely going away.

Hmm, last time I used a library would've been a few years ago. I still read, I'm just currently re-reading some of the books I actually own so don't need to go to a library right now ;).

I last went into the library at the beginning of the week, and currently have 2 books checked out that need renewing on Saturday, so off I go again tomorrow! Will they go away? I think the phsyical book side of them will be phased out, but my local one does a roaring trade with digital books and is also used as a meeting place for various groups so I think they might shift focus to that (are they still a library if they have no physical books? who knows!).

They say that travel broadens the mind, but have you traveled to another country for anything other than a holiday?

I went to Canada several years ago for a research conference.

I have worked with lots of folks who have traveled internationally for work, but I haven't taken advantage of the opportunity. 

Breaking a rule by answering yesterday's question, but I figure I have a bit of say in the matter since I actually work at a library. I don't think physical libraries will be phased out any time soon, but like what Dandolo suggested, they need to adapt and change with the times to stay relevent to the modern day.

For example, my branch(of the 21 in our county that do the same) doesn't exclusivly carry only physical, regular format books.  We've got a section of Large print books for the elderly and visualy impared. We cary books on CD which are very popular with old folks who can't read normal text as well as they used to OR for folks who spend a lot of their time commuting from work and want to fill the void with something. Playaways(Imagine a small MP3 player that holds a single audiobook that takes a single AAA battery) are also good for that group, just don't listen to it while your driving. We have a massive collection of DVDs and Blurays with movies ranging from black and white classics to the newest releases, not to mention the ammount of television series and Non-fiction documentaries and foreign films. Our music collection is pretty impressive. We have patrons who come in everyday to use our public-use computers, and the kids and young adult sections are almost mini-libraries of their own. I haven't even mentioned the numerous gatherings and day-events we hold year-round.

And yes, we carry a large collection of digital books that we can loan out from our online services.

So no, I don't think physical libraries will be phased out soon. They need to change with the needs of the public they serve to stay relevent. If they can do that, then I think brick and mortar libraries should be around for a good while still.

As for the current question: I haven't had the chance to travel outside the country as of yet. Not that I don't want to, the chance just hasn't shown itself yet. The farthest I've traveled is I want to say Florida.

Actually, yeah, to jump on the library thing - I think the tech news has been hyping the demise of the library (and even the printed book entirely) unnecessarily for some time. I have family who work at libraries, and you know what? Their circulation numbers haven't fallen over the last several years or decades.

I guess I'm still in a talkative mood. Let's go with something library-related:

What was the last book series you've read from? Are their any book series you would want to suggest?

Don't judge me, but the last book series I've read through is Dav Pilkey's Captain Underpants. Lemme explain myself... You see, I enjoy bringing home books for my nephew. And like any responsible adult I want to read a book through before giving it to a child, to make sure that they're appropriate for his age and all that good stuff. So once he showed interest in the first Captain Underpants book, I read through the entire series. I'll say they're having a good effect on him: He's reading more, and he's even started making his own comic with his friends.

I just finished the first book of The Three Body Problem. Before that, it was The Expanse.

Let's answer my friday question first, yes I guess. I went to France as an exchange student for a week, it was interesting to go to a different shcool and see how the it differed, but goingt o school on Staurday was a really foreign concept!

I'm currently reading a book from "The Gower Street Detective" series, it's a bit of a pastiche/homage of various other fictional detectives, it's a pretty good series if you like very dry humour.

To piggyback off of Phantom5613's answers, audiobooks! Do you ever listen to them? Do you prefer a "famous" person to read to you or to get from the author's mouth? Do you prefer audio drama adaptations with a cast to them being just read to you?

Never had any interest in audiobooks - I prefer to read the actual book myself and "hear" the characters' voices in whatever voices I think they should have, not the way someone else is reading them.

I've listened to a couple audiobooks. One of my favorites hands-down is 'The Hobbit'. There's a number of songs and such in there, and it's nice to get a reminder of how the classic book went.

I find that a profesional voice actor makes for great listening, and can bring many characters to life. And if the author is involved at all with the recording, they can help the actor convey the proper emotions and inflections of a character's speech.

If it's an autobiography audiobook though, then it being read by the author is probably better.

I usually listen to things when I'm working out or driving. I find that listening to books while driving is too distracting, as my imagination takes over, and listening to books while working out doesn't provide sufficient energy to motivate. :-\ 

So no, not listening to audio books...

I do listen to audio books but honestly, the questions I asked don't matter much to me. So long as the reader/cast is not monotone and the story is not boring I'm along for the ride.

Mentioning Beast Wars reminds me of the original Transformers TV series and the movie… and the scarring nature of the death of Optimus Prime. When did you last cry at a movie/TV show?

I think I am dead inside, as I can’t recall the time I last cried. I do remember feeling sad at the death of Tayln in Farscape, I seem to remember it being winter and very dark outside my house after the episode and I still had to go out and buy dinner, I decided to go down to the local chippy to buy myself some comfort food instead of doing a proper food shop.

Aww yes, as a bit of a 'Scaper myself, I agree that part was sad. Didn't make me cry, though. Hmm, maybe the "worst" moment for me was a particular point in "Finding Dory", which I watched a few months ago...

I cry pretty easily. :-) Saw a movie called The Samuel Project, recently, that had a powerful and emotional moment towards the end that really affected me, and just before that a documentary called Man Made that made me cry multiple times (e.g., a man meets his birth family for the first time, trans men are able to be themselves in important moments).

Both were at the film festival, of course. ;-)

Ameena mentioned Finding Dory so why not Pixar? What do you think of the Pixar movies? How many have you seen? (list of movies)

I've seen 4 of them, the first 2 Toy Story movies, Up and The Incredibles. I've seen bits and pieces of Brave and WALL-E. I'm sure I'm missing out by not having seen more but I think they're only OK, not great. I won't go out of my way to see any new Pixar films but I might watch one if I'm bored and they happen to be on TV.

I've all of them except the Cars movies. Inside Out, Wall-E, and the Toy Story movies are my favorites of the bunch. Brave and The Good Dinosaur didn't really work for me.

I’ve seen a lot of various Pixar movies and it would take a while to list them all.  Overall, they make movies that stand up fairly well story and animation wise.  Their duds are few and far between for me.  Cars 2 probably being the worst for me and Incredibles/Toy Story being my favorite. 

I think I've seen most of their non-sequel films, and generally like them. It might be obvious that The Incredibles is probably still my favorite, though I've only seen its sequel once. And the first ~15 minutes of Up are just beautiful storytelling.

The thing I have missed from Pixar since their pre-acquisition by Disney pipeline cleared has been the continued creation of new and original settings.

Finally got round to watching the Increcibles 2 the other day...am yet to watch Cars 3 (which hopefully is better than its immediate predecessor, which I don't think was too fantastic), and Coco which I've only vaguely heard of and am not really sure how I've missed. Other than that I've seen the lot :D.

I really enjoy Pixar's films, but I'm a sap. :-p 

I haven't watched any of the Cars sequels, Good Dinosaur, or Coco, although I'm planning eventually watch Coco -- it came out at a challenging time. :-\

Sequels. We all know they're not as good as the originals so why do they get made? What's teh worst sequel you have ever seen?

Most of the time they are made for money reasons because so many people enjoyed the first and they assume they’ll come back for more.  As it the worst sequel to me it’s Batman and Robin.  

Sequels are considered less risky than new IPs, even if their not necessarilly more profitable.

For me the worst sequels were the absolutely awful straight to DVD sequels Disney was making in the 2000s. Mulan II was probably the worst of the bunch.

Other awful sequels that are up there among my least favorites would be X-Men III, Jurassic Park III, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

Can we count The Hobbit Part II: The Desolation of Smaug?

I think I'm going to go with Alien 3, had it not been an alien film I might have enjoyed it as a monster flick but something about tying it to the Xenomorph series just rubbed me the wrong way, even if Ripley's ending was great.

Handelabra's Aeon's End kickstarter starts today, are you going to back it?

I am. I don't like it as much as I love Sentinels, the lore just doesn't grab me and although it has very similar strategy it doesn't scratch that same itch for me, even though it is fun to play.

I've never played Aeon's End but I'm definitely backing the Kickstarter. I think all 3 games Handelabra has made so far have been a blast, so I'm just trusting I'll enjoy it based on that and the description I've read of what the game is.

I’ll be backing it.  I’ve played it a handful of times and I’m interested in playing more.   So far my plays have been crushing defeats.  

Most of my flexible funds this month went to Jagged Earth and some upgrades to the house, so I may have to pass on the Kickstarter and pick it up at retail. Will keep an eye on it, though.

Depends on the day and my mood.  More often I’d say inside.  

Sunny? I'm inside -- the sun causes my skin to have an auto-immune reaction if I'm in it for more than a few minutes. :-\

What's your favourite period of history? Is there one that if there's a game/book/film in that period you are more likely to give it a look?

Medieval times and that applies to books/movies/games as well.   Not saying they have to recreate how things were in that timeframe but media using themes from that timeframe intrigue me more like Dragon Age for instance. 

I'm with Powerhound.  Medieval time period?  I'm in.

The 27th century. There's such an incredible amount of recovery from The Great Burn in that short period, and so many facinating personalities involved.

The US does not haveArmistice Day.   In the US tomorrow we have Vereran’s Day which honors military veterans and coincides with Armistice Day as it was a replacement for it.  It was Armistice Day until it was changed in 1954.

It's midday over here, what time do you usually have lunch?

My lunch is usually very late, 3 or 4 pm.

Between 11AM and 1PM my time 

First lunch is usually around 11am. Second is around 1-2pm. (All of this depends on meetings, of course. ;-)

Usually around 12:30 or so if it's not a workday, but if it is then it's when I get back from work, usually around 1:30-1:45.

I start eating lunch ideally as close to 12:00 as possible on a weekday, though sometimes work gets in the way.

To answer Phantom's question, the perfect sandwich consists of rye bread, deli mustard, a generous mound of corned beef (freshly cut, shaved so it's nice and thin, and a medium level of fat), and absolutely nothing else.

I love sub sandwiches. A nice fresh italian bread drizzled with oil and vinegar that's layered with some ham, prosciutto and pepperoni. Add in some provalone, thinly sliced tomato and shredded lettuce, and season it all with good old salt, pepper and oregano. Maybe a light layer of mayo, depending on if you like that kind of thing or not.

My sleep schedule is all kinds of wacky, so lunch just happens when it happens for me. Sometimes lunch is even the first thing I eat in the day...

They say that Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, what makes a meal breakfast for you? Is it that you have it in “your” morning? Is it just the first meal of the day? Is it eating “breakfast-y” things like cereal?

I have to say that my “lunch at 3-4pm” is usually the first thing I have eaten in the day, and I don’t consider that breakfast. I eat cereal at whatever time it is if I happen to fancy a bowl so it’s not about specific types of food. I guess it must just be that I eat soon after I get up.

I don’t/can’t eat a good hour after I get up in the morning without feeling sick, but my schedule doesn’t allow me the chance to wait for my stomach to wake up. That means a standard breakfast is normally some peanut butter toast and a glass of water most days.

So yeah, lunch is still lunch.

I'm similar to you, Phantom, in that I feel kind of ill if I eat too early. I haven't bothered with breakfast since hmm, probably some time late during my school days, when on weekends I would get up and go straight out to meet a friend and go to the cinema or whatever. But weirdly, I do tend to have breakfast the rare times I'm on holiday, when a couple of pains au chocolat tend to do the job, om nom nom. As a kid, I would have stuff like toast or cereal most of the time.

For me breakfast is a meal that I eat "in the morning" and/or that's breakfast-y. (So if my first meal of the day is eggs and toast at 12:30pm on a Saturday, that's still breakfast).

I definitely make a point of eating something every morning, although most days that tends to be smaller (oatmeal, small bowl of cereal, a toasted bagel). If I don't eat anything I find myself low on energy, and then get really hungry about an hour before lunch.

Ha, yes, Milton Jones isn't bad...his grandfather can be pretty funny, too. I mean, his other grandfather. No, wait, sorry, I mean his other grandfather ;).

My top two favourite stand-up comedians are probably Eddie Izzard and Bill Bailey. Just the random stuff they come out with sometimes, it's great ("Covered in beeeeees!"). Plus Bill can apparently play All of the Instruments. Ever. All of them :O.

Well, if my house was actually on fire inside when I woke up I'd probably freak out and panic and not think much of anything except getting as far away from it as possible...hmm, can't I save my computer, and Sentinels, and Spirit Island? I suppose a computer is multiple "items" and I'd have to, you know, unplug it and all that and somehow carry it...mind you, Sentinels is pretty bloody heavy too so that would be an issue to lug out :D. And Spirit Island is also technically two items since it's spread between the base and Branch and Claw boxes in order for it all to fit. Oh, and maybe I should bring my dice bag too...

Hmm, but I've already had one fire at home this year. Can I be exempt due to my house only just having been fixed from that? :D

Well, that was... Exciting, getting out of the fire. Here's a related question:

It turns out the fire was nowhere near as damaging as you first thought it would be. In fact, it only burned down the one room you hate most in your house! What is that room, and how would you rebuild it?

To answer my own question, unlike Ameena I don't think a computer (tower) is multiple things or that difficult to unplug in a crisis so I would take that. I think I have most of it backed up but there are still things on it that I wouldn't want to risk losing.

To answer Phantom5613's question... I don't hate any room in my house. I guess I rebuild whatever room is destroyed to be more or less the same as it was before.

What is the worst book you have ever read? Why did you read it?

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn probably was the worst book I’ve ever read and had to for school.   

Ha well, we pretty much literally did have one room burn down (well, the ceiling was half burned out and the rest was basically an ash-strewn wasteland) and that was my parents' room...the room of least impact on me since I pretty much never have any reason to go in there. So, maybe that would be my answer to that question but I don't hate that room (or any other in our house)...

Anyway, worst book I ever read? Well, we had to study Pride and Prejudice at school for GCSE but we didn't have to read it all the way through, we just kind of studied chapters and stuff (and watched the TV adaptation, the famous BBC one with Colin Firth). So maybe that doesn't really count. I do remember reading a whole series of books (four in total) that I spent most of the time hoping it would get better, only it kind of, well, didn't. Each book after the first spent at least a few chapters summarising the events of the previous book(s) and the series ended in such a way that it kind of rendered everything but the last few chapters (well, parts of them) completely pointless :P.

My pick is Great Expectations. It was really hard to get through that book.

For me it was probably The Things They Carried.

For me it's a toss up, either The Da Vinci Code because the hero is just so stupid and the plot is so obvious that there is no tension whatsoever, I read it because I wanted to see what everyone was talking about, or The Laundry Files which I stoppped reading before the end of the first chapter, and I can't remember the last book aside from that one that I did not read to completion, it was just far too dry and boring for me.

If you were an RPG character, what would be your highest stat?

If you mean I’m translating myself into a RPG character Intelligence is my highest stat. 

Probably Constitution, I've taken some pretty crazy damage over the years and have come out with bruises and scrapes. 

Anger isn't a stat.

If we're translating ourselves into specifically DnD stats then I suppose Int would be my highest, but different systems can use different stats so it might vary depending on that system's equivalent. I'm definitely thinky stats over physical stats, though :D.

I’d like to visit Japan

I got a bunch of places I want to go, but the farthest away locale would be Japan. Yes, I would want to go and nerd out in the nerve center of all things anime, but I'd also want to tour the more historical sites. Do something so I could get a real feeling of Japanese culture. And of course I'd eat my way all over, getting a taste of as many authentic dishes and snacks as I could.

I'm pretty boring when it comes to travel, there's no where I really want to go, it's the people I go with that are important.

What's the best deal you have ever got?

Not me but my teacher got a car for $1. He saw an ad, and when asked if it was really that cheap, the woman said that her husband left her for someone else, and told her to sell the car and send him the money.

Once, I got a bunch of WoD game books for 25% off the already discounted price, netting me almost the full line of 'Demon: The Fallen' for well under $100.

I can't remember a deal that was exceptionally good, but I did once buy a copy of Snow Crash froma  shop for RRP only to find it was signed by the author.

My favorite surprise was as a kid being taken to an amusement park.  We had gotten in the car but with no indication of what we were actually doing.  

Being invited by a friend's family for said friend's birthday party at Disney World. They flew me down to Florida with extra miles they had gained, and since they were part of the Disney Vacation Club they got me into the park too.

I watched Dredd (again) over the weekend and was reminded of civic duty! Have you been summoned for Jury service?

Yes, my only complaint from it is the pay.   Otherwise it was an enjoyable experience.  The longest part was them selecting jurors for the case as it seemed obvious to me from lines of questioning who would be kicked out.   While I understand you want an impartial jury once you hit upon a disqualifying item they shouldn’t need to keep going through other questions and just bring up a potential juror immediately.

I too have been on jury service, at a court just down the road from where I worked in a Law Office. It was weird to be going to a place I regularly visited anyway, but going in a different entrance and seeing a whole different side of the building (both physically and metaphorically). I think I eat the food on the first day only and then never again, I certainly had money left over on my lunch card thing at the end of the trial.

(non-posionous) Spiders! Are you scared of them? Do you squash them if you find them in your house, or do you capture them and take them outside?

Depends.  If brought to my attention from my wife I kill it.  Otherwise I typically leave them alone.

Spiderstend to be more venomous than poisonous, but either way, I don't really like anything with more than four legs if they're anything bigger than tiny. if a great big black spider shows up in the house I run away and get (usually) my dad to catch it and chuck it out the window. If no-one else is around I'll hope the spider goes on the floor and chuck the jug over it for my dad to chuck out the window when he's back from wherever he's gone :D.

If a spider is just chilling on my wall or a corner of my room, I leave him alone. But if they get into my personal space and don't show any sign of leaving, I catch them and move them elsewhere.

I usually try to put spiders outside rather than squish them, but sometimes they startle me and get flattened.

There have been some that have gotten stuck in my head but thankfully none are taking up brainspace right now.

The Hershey Kiss commercial where they play 'We wish you a Merry Christmas' in bells. I love that one since it's a rare ad that's not too in your face, and it always reminds me that Christmas time is close.

2 stupid adverts from the 90s are just stuck right in there and I can't get them out. They are for a food called Pot Noodle, a product I don't even particularly like. I can remember all the lyrics to them both, it's a horrible fate. Video 1 Video 2

Hotels! When was the last time you stayed in a room that wasn’t your own/a friend's/family's?

Heh. A few months ago, from the 20th April through to the beginning of June when we finally got a temporary house sorted while the buildy-people fixed our house after that little burny incident that happened...and actually, I suppose my room at that house doesn't really count as mine either, seeing how it was just a rented place. But we're back home now so yay :D.

A couple months ago at a hotel while visiting my parents.  Didn’t start out too well with the wife and kid getting sick off the bat.  

January 2018 for a 4-day boardgaming weekend. (And I'm already booked for 2019!)

I... don't even remember. :-\ It's definitely been a while! 

Although, last weekend we had some folks crash our room for PAX Unplugged when their housing plans didn't work out as expected. Ended up going very well, all things considered, considering it was 6 people in a room with 2 queen beds an no other options (e.g., couches)! :-D 

I'm with Rabit, I can't remember when I last stayed somewhere I didn't know the owners.

Too hot or too cold?

Right now, definitely cold – although probably not too cold. We keep the house pretty chilly to save money, but I do have a cat on my lap almost all the time when I’m sitting down, so… ;-)  

I'd rather be too cold than too hot - if it's too cold you can always add an extra layer and have the added bonus of being all comfy and snuggy. If it's too hot there's only so much you can take off...

Yeah, I'm with Ameena: I'd rather be too cold, as there are ways to make myself comfortable. 

Rabit, you did not misunderstand the question. Some questions are worded as they are so there are multiple possible interpretations of how they could be answered.

I would rather my food be too hot than too cold, too hot can be corrected via time but too cold is a pain to correct, you reheat it and I can never get it just right, it's always either still too cold or now too hot!

I don't think I eat very much 'holiday' candy, but I do love me some cranberry ginger ale. It's only ever around durring the holidays and full of sugar, so I'm gonna count it.

Earlier this year I was invited to Disney World for a friend's birthday, and we stayed at the hotel that has all the African art and a zoo. Was a fun time over all.

I prefer the cold, but if I can get inside then either extreme is usually easily handled.

No pets right now, haven't for over a decade now but it'd be nice to have some rats again. Best pets :D.

With the holidays in full swing, many folks enjoy watching particular seasonal movies/tv specials. Two of my favorites in particular are 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' and 'A Charlie Brown Christmas'. Another favorite is 'A Muppet Christmas Carol'.

Catching up a little:

I too hate both extremes of weather, but I'll agree that too cold is often easier to mitigate than too hot.

No pets right now as my mom is more than enough work to care for. I'd love to be a happy cat owner again someday though.

I'll forever have a big soft spot for all the old Rankin/Bass holiday specials, with Twas the Night Before Christmas being a particular favorite. (Though it's hard to beat "Put One Foot in Front of the Other" in terms of favorite song specifically.)

I am unfortunately petless right now, but cats are my pet of choice when I can have them. Not too needy but with enough of a personality to come pester you for love when they want it!

Christmas/Holiday movies? Not that I can think of... Die Hard? I don't go out of my way to watch it at Christmas but I would watch it if it was on.

As we're talking about movies and stuff... Do you consume the media of other countries? Is there music you like that your country doesn’t produce? Do you watch things in different languages?

I've seen 124 movies not made in the US (from 21 different countries)... probably about half of which were English language and half of which were subtitled. I'm hoping to increase that number soon by actively tracking it and seeking out movies from countries I haven't seen any from.

Well, thanks to the prevalence of Hollywood/Disney/Pixar, the majority of films I've seen originate from over in the US. I've seen a few non-English films as well - a couple of French ones, for example, and some Animé (Akira and a few Studio Ghibli films). Music tends to be similarly US-produced since it's mostly soundtracks from films and computer games that usually come from over there. But at least some of the media I use does come from here in the UK :D.

I like a lot of British comedy.

And has anyone else here seen Curse of the Golden Flower? It's AMAZING. It's like Macbeth, but if the emperor had ninjas.

I do watch foreign language films, but they're usually 70s-early 2000 Hong Kong Action Flicks or (anytime) physical comedy, not high art (adds Curse of the Golden Flower to list anyway).

Multiverses! If you could live anywhere, and remain you as you are now, which fictional reality would you live in and why?

I’m not sure I remained as is that there is any fictional reality I want to live in.   Too many of them seem rather dangerous for the regular person.  

I watch a lot of anime( a LOT of anime), but I try to expand my horizons whenever I find something interesting. I mostly favor the realm of animation, but a good kung fu movie or a good Kaiju film can make me change things up.

Whew, there's alot of choices... There's so many neat worlds to visit, but I can't really think of any right now that I'd want to live in permanently...

For now, I'll say the main reality of SotM. The rair chance of something happening that could make me a super hero is enough to draw me there.

That's easy! I'd totaly want to live in the Pokemon world. Though I may be a tad old to just be starting a pokemon journey, but who cares! That would be a wicked amount of fun!

Although (as Powerhound_2000 points out) fictional universes are very dangerous for us ordinary people, I think I would live in the corner of the multiverse where Shadowrun is real. Even with the megacorps it's pretty similar to life now, but with magic!

Soda? Do you drink fizzy drinks? What’s your favourite flavour?

Yes.  Mountain Dew used to be my drink of choice.  Currently my favorite is Cherry Coke.  

I love soda, but I have to cut it with a lot of ice now a days. I love Dr Pepper, Mr Pibb, Mountain Dew Baha Blast... Along with most classic Coke products.

But the one I'm currently interested in is the Mountain Dew holiday flavor. It's a mix of cranberry and pomegranate, and it's pretty tasty. I've only found it in the 20 oz. bottles so far at places like 7 Eleven or my local supermarket.

Ah, I also love those touchscreen Coke machines you can find at movie theaters and the odd fast food joint. For those not in the know, those machines let you mix dozens of different flavors with your soft drink. A personal favorite of mine is Coke Orange, maybe with a few blasts of Lime.

Just normal old Coke/Pepsi for me...also quite like Apple Tango, and Appletiser.

It's pop.

And I hate them. The combination of sweet and fizzy just doesn’t do it for me, I think it goes back to my school days and student run discos at lunch time, trying to drink it in the dark while we just threw ourselves around on the dance floor just doesn’t make for a good experience.

You've backed a kickstarter for a game/book/RPG, and got an alpha copy of it, Do you give it a good read or do you wait for the "proper" copy to make its way to you?

Wait for a proper copy

It depends. For example:

• If they're asking for editorial feedback, I try to make time to provide it.
• If I need it for a current RPG game (as has happened), I'll give it an initial read to determine what I'll be able to use at a high-level (and to make notes on things that I'll need answers to if they're missing from this version). 
• If they're looking for playtesting feedback, I probably won't -- I can't make the time to playtest GTG and Handelabra's stuff as much as I'd like, and I have significant motivation there, so I won't be able to make time for any other playtesting.

You're welcome. Turns out today has a high chance of being just as dreary, so I guess I'm staying inside.

If it's a system I'm REALLY interested in, then I'll probably give it a once over. but depending on how often they plan on releasing updated versions(The Savage Worlds Adventure edition book has had 3 updates in as many weeks!), I may just wait for the book proper before I give it a full read through. Or at least until the company decides to cool it on updates...

I usually wait for a proper copy before diving in. Unless it's something I really really want, then I start right away.

Comfy shoes! Do you have a piece of clothing that you just wont throw out?

Hats. I still have hats I used to wear near ten years ago hanging on the back of my door. Many of them are old and tattered and thread-bare, but I can't bring myself to throw them away.

Interestingly, up until this morning, my leather jacket. I've had the poor thing for more than 20 years, fixed and repaired it multiple times. But now the zipper won't hold and the leather is completely worn down... :-( Decided last night to finally let it go. :'(

Well, I just turned 34 a few days ago and I still wear my lovely purple coat that I got when I was about fifteen. So that's over half my lifetime ago :O.

What was your last take out/delivery food? Was it good?

Pizza and it was just ok.   Didn’t help that the order got split up because the delivery guy didn’t have the whole order.  

My last take out was (open) chips. Walking home late out in the cold and dark eating chips slathered in salt and vineger, it was great. And it brings back childhood memories of doing the same when visting my grand parents.

I'm shocked but happy the things I've enjoyed most of my life like superheroes and RPGs like D&D have become socially acceptable.

But I think the way Hollywood is "reinventing" some of the old media is kind of sad. :-/ (Having said that, I'm looking forward to getting our first Transformer movie with Bumblebee! :-D )

Yeah, I wish they'd stop "rebooting" old films and just come up with some new ideas and make those instead :P.

Games-wise I'm wondering how long it'll be before the big-name companies go under due to trying to screw over their customers so much they end up without any customers, meanwhile all the little indy companies with a single-figure total of people will take over again and sell all the actually decent games at reasonable prices :D. At least I have emulators now to replay all the old games I used to play but that wouldn't normally run on my current PC due to being from the Atari or needing DOS/a floppy drive. So if I feel like playing anything from back in the '80s/'90s I can just load it up whenever I like and get on with it :D.

Yeah, I'm old enough to see my childhood revived.

I'm not a big fan of movie or TV reboots for some reason (possibly because they're passive and I have no say it what happens) but computer games and the like get my thumbs up.

Photos! Do you take photos in your everyday life? Do you instagram your meals?

I take some photos but not everyday.  I do not use Instagram nor do I take pics of my food

I take pics on occasion, but -- as Powerhound -- not daily. I don't post pictures very often to social media (and never to Instagram), and usually it's a images from a specific event, such as a trip/holiday, a convention, or a gathering of friends / folks who might be specifically interested in such images. 

I don't have a camera, so no. I take screnshots occasionally in games with cool imagery that I want to use as desktop wallpapers, though, if that counts ;).

I'll normally only take pictures of something if I have an interest in it, like the cover of a book I found in a store or maybe of an interesting landscape, or maybe a funny thing a relative is doing. I don't post photos to any social media as a general rule, but once in a while I'll show the picture to friends.

I'm not a visual person, so I don't take photos, not even on when I go on vacation.

Anything you are looking forward to this year? Exciting holiday plans, release of a new film/book/game, new job?

I'm looking forward to the continuation of the Avengers movies, the payout for several Kickstarters I backed, and the new Pokemon and Animal Crossing games that will hopefully be released this year. I also have a trip coming up, so there's that to look forward to as well.

I'm looking forward to a 4-day boardgaming weekend coming up in just 2 weeks(!), camping this summer with my s/o, visiting some friends who live in Edmonton, and a friend's wedding this Fall.  (Plus a bunch of other stuff too!)

Sentinels: OblivAeon digital, Obviously. 

Lots to look forward to this year. I'm going to visit some of my friends from college who I haven't seen in a few years, so really looking forward to that. Also, I'm planning a trip to Scotland, which I'm looking forward to as well.

In terms of movies there's a lot coming out this year in terms of superhero stuff. Also excited to get new movies from Quinton Terentino, J.C. Chandor, and David Robert Mitchell.

In terms of games I'm mostly just excited for everything Handelabra is working on.

I very much take things as I find them so there's little I ever really look forward to... in fact the only thing I can think of that I am actively looking forward to is the Cyberpunk 2077 game coming out, and there's no guarantee that's coming out this year!

EDIT: I thought of something! The last issue of Mage- The Hero Denied is out in February, a story 30 odd years in the making, I am defintely looking forward to that (with some trepidation)!

Wait, mouse mat is still a thing? That is so 1995... :)

I do.  It's got the cover art for Max Payne on it.

I think I got it either with Max Payne or purchased it separately around the same time... but it's been a long time since then so it's hard to remember.

I use one at work; it's emblazoned with the university logo. 

I also have a Pittsburgh Steelers one at home in our office, but we rarely use our office outside of the occasional guest stay on the futon and my wife's yarn storage.

I have two, as I use both of my hands (to help reduce wrist strain): 

• Left: This beautiful piece from Nolan Nasser (who did a bunch of Spirit Island art)
• Right: A work of art featuring Serenity and the words "Can't take the sky from me", from the artist known as "11th Hour" (Susan Tomb, who sadly passed away back in 2011)

I have a trackerball mouse, but I still rest it on a mousepad! It's one I got at the Doctor Who experience sometime back, the TARDIS making it's way through the vortex.

I have some but not with any pictures. 

I have a couple, but the only one that's interesting is the rainbow umbrella that I specifically bought to use at Pride parades to shade myself from the sun. :-) 

Every 3-5 years I decide I need an umbrella, buy one, and then promptly go about losing it within 2 weeks of purchase.  So no umbrella for me.

I dance in the rain. I don't need an umbrella. :)

I hear you. I got a sunburn last summer that hurt for weeks afterwards. 

I have an umbrella, but I never use it, even if it's absolutely tipping down. It's just a plain black one. I just find them more trouble at the end of the journey than benefit during it.

A day in the life! Is there any one specific person you would want to be for a day? Someone famous, someone with a particular job you've always been interested in, a person who was somewhere when a particular thing happened?

When I went to Epcot I got an umbrella as a souvenier from the Japanese pavilion. The handle looks like a sword's hilt, and it comes in this cool sling that you can wear across your back(Yes, I'm a weeb). What's REALLY cool is that when water falls on the normally black material, you can see all these different symbols for different houses of samurai.

But as luck would have it, something bad happened when my friend shipped it to me. One end of the cardbord box was smashed and looked like an accordian leaning to one side, and my poor umbrella's handle was bent. :( Thankfully my dad is a bit of a fix-it man, and was able to get it back to a usable state.

Sundau Question: Has a package ever been shipped to you in a damaged state? What'd it look like? Were your items damaged, or were the shipping gods kind and your stuff was unharmed?

Single use Monocles! What’s the biggest single "wasteful" purchase you have made?

So I guess it's just me that gets packages smashed every so often. :/

How can a Monocle be made 'single-use'?

I suppose my most wasteful purchase could be any of the numerous games that I've bought but still haven't gotten the chance to play...

Nah, I've had a few packages destroyed, just didn't have a chance to get out here in time to answer. :-\ Usually what was being delivered is okay -- or good enough I'm not going to stress over it -- but I've had a couple items that were destroyed. 

My wasteful purchases are usually things I already had and forgot / didn't know we had.

Something I've also had happen is when Amazon sends me a notice that the  vendor I bought something from said it had been damaged during shipping (overlapping the two questions! :-) so they cancelled my order, and I'd have to re-order it. Which I do. And then the original order arrives. Followed by the second order... :-\ I just had this happen for the third time over the weekend, but this time I waited and didn't order again, so I won't get a second one. :-) 

I have no idea but Zach Weinersmith somehow managed it.

Wasteful purchases? I there was a board/miniatures game I was interested in where the company that made it was going out of business, I bought some £200 worth of stuff for it and I haven’t touched it since I got it.

Speaking of Monocles, Glasses! Do you wear them? Do you wear contact lenses? Have you has laser eye surgery to correct your eyesight?

I wear glasses, and I don't plan on getting surgery any time soon.

Glasses.   I wore contacts for a while but my eyes felt so dried out. I have no had laser eye surgery nor do I plan too.  

I also wear glasses, occassionally. Never wanted to try contacts, I don't think I could put my finger in my eye every day.

Speaking of bad senses, if you had to lose all but one of your senses, which would you save? Why that one?

Probably eyesight - don't think I'd want to be unable to read. I suppose maybe smell would be second, so I could at least mostly enjoy food (I think about 80% of the flavour of food comes via smell, not taste). Then again, not being able to experience touch would make a lot of things very difficult (holding things, using a mouse and keyboard, etc). Hmm...I think what I'm saying is that the one I would least be worried ot lose would be hearing. But I'd still rather not lose that ;).

I'd be fine if I lost touch, taste, or smell. Hearing and sight are important to me though. Sight above all I guess.

Of all my senses, I think my sense of self is the one I would miss the most.

High Five! Are you expressive with your hands? Do you give people a thumbs up? What's your favourite/most used hand gesture?

I talk with my hands a lot. Super expressive. 

I gesture to emphasize, and for fun. 

One of my most used or favourite USB to add the “snap” to various actions. The snap and point for “you got this/hey there “.

I typically flail my hands around when speaking to audiences as I get nervous but in smaller setting I am not very expressive with my hands. 

I tend to wave my hands around/gesture a lot whilst talking. I often wave hello/goodbye to people as well, and clap when excited/something cool happens. But it's not usually very open and expansive, more kind of closer in to myself.

I tend to use my hands as an alternative to speaking with words, either out of laziness or comedic effect. My favorite gesture is the facepalm.

I'm not very expressive with my hands, usually. I've played a few RPGs where my characters were so I did it then, wiggling my fingers around as a wave and acting out my groups exploits via flinging my arms around, usually resulting in knocking over someone's drink (in game only). Outisde of that, the High Five is my most common hand gesture.

MP3s, vinyl, tapes, CDs, what medium did you grow up listening to? Can you tell any difference in sound quality as technology has progressed (or regressed if you prefer)?

8-tracks, vinyl, and cassettes when I was growing up. 

I remember how excited we were when CDs came out while we were in college. We had seven of us in our apartment: one person bought a player, everyone bought their own CDs, and we took turns playing them. It was great! 

I think the quality has gotten better (depending on the situation), although I think listening to Alan Parson's Tales of Mystery and Imagination on a headset via cassette is just as good as CD...

Cassettes, CDs, and then mp3s.  Honestly I can’t tell a difference in quality. 

Same as Powerhound - had cassettes when I was a kid, then aged into CDs and now MP3s. Although add in ye-olde-fashioned records into that as well, as my parents have a fairly large collection between them and we had a hi-fi system thing with a record player so I got to listen to a bunch of those as a kid too.

Vinyl were still around when I was growing up, but cassettes were the new medium and soon took over. So much time spent with a pencil trying to spool that magnetic tape back in, I do not miss that! I can remember when CDs where thought of as the thing "the rich kid" had, and magazines were printing articles like "10 things to do with your CDs when they are scratched. 1. A coaster.". Dark times.

I've never noticed a difference in quality over the mediums.

I suppose it depends what it is. I mean, if it's something like people to play games with, I'm already in the former category. If it was something like food, I'd rather have the latter ;).

If it's something non-essential like episodes of a tv show or , then too little.

If I need it to live, then I'm pretty sure anyone would say they'd rather have too much.

Agreed, I've seen plenty of media that I lose interest in and think I could pinpoint exactly the spot where it should have stopped...though I didn't know it at the time. Makes me look back at the things that were "cut short" more positively!

I'd rather have too little than too much and become bored of it. Boredom is my enemy and must be quashed!

As some of you might have seen there was a countdown hidden in the previous five questions, which was to lead to my 100th question... but then I realised I nothing planned for it, all that planning into getting the questions to hide the numbers and no pay off!

So I guess the best I've got for this 100 mark is "Are you going to back the Sentinel Comics RPG Kickstarter"?

Yep! Don't know if the group I play with will be interested in the system (and I have my own concerns with it :-), but I really like the system and want it to be successful! 

It's already live and funded at this point, from what I'm aware of!

Already backed for the PDF.  I had to shell out for a new car last week, after totalling our prior one during a snowstorm, so funds are a bit tight, to say the least.  That said, the insurance payout took care of the majority of the new wheels, so, if things look better when the pledge manager goes live, I'll likely pick up a hard copy and the History of SC book as well.

I'm in for the Sentinel Collector pledge. If I budget right, that should work out fine. February is also my Birthday month, so this is my present to me, in a way.

I had people all lined up to try it out when it was announced/hinted at but now X years later I'm just not interested any more... or more accurately I'm just disappointed that this was billed as a new system when it's not, it's the same system that Critical hits did for Marvel with a new bit integrated to it. It might be enough to make it a new system for some people but not for me.

And on that downer I'm "officially" stepping down as Question of the Day asker. 100 questions is a nice big number to end on (and modesty forbids me from mentioning that is more than double than other askers have asked) but I shall be back if I have a burning question to ask (or if I will get burned for not asking questions).

It would be fascinating to get a glimpse of the future – but I would rather go far future, hundreds or thousands of years, than the near future. My goal is to satisfy my curiosity, not shape my sports betting!

The future. Surely if I can go to the future then someone in said future would have found a way to send me to the past. Plus, I can big the people that out lived me!

My Answer to Yesterday’s Question: I think I’d probably rather go to the future, because I wouldn’t want to accidentally mess-up the past via the Butterfly Effect and come home to a different present.

I often skip lunch already, and while I would rather double breakfast (as that’s the best for weight loss/maintenance) I usually wind up doubling dinner and/or bedtime snack.

Well… I currently eat ~5 “meals” a day, so I suppose dropping this “middle” one that you labelled “lunch” would be the best option.

Skip lunch, double breakfast. So, basically, brunch!

I just go for all the breakfast foods, even if brunch is at more like lunchtime.

Ocean, how else will we find the Ruins of Atlantis?

Ocean, as we’ll be able to more easily get there and bring things back – and get better visibility into how much damage we’re causing…

Space exploration is my job!

But I say: Why choose? We should do either/both not out of a desire to get something out of it, but for the sake of knowledge. I think they’re both cool and worthy endeavors, and you never know when there might be a practical application of fundamental science.

@Rabit a lot of spacecraft are integral to our understanding of what’s going on with Earth’s climate, including probes to other worlds!

fjur’s Questions of the Day #8: Webcomics are one of the newest mediums of storytelling. Do you read any?

Yup, I’m an engineer working on robotic probes, mostly for NASA. It’s my dream job! My specific field is guidance and control, which is how I came up with my forum/hero name.

As for webcomics… Speaking of being an engineer, probably the one I read most frequently is xkcd. But I also get a kick out of the occasional Dinosaur Comics or Chief O’Brien at Work, and although it’s not a webcomic, strictly speaking, I have a bookmark pointing to good ol’ Calvin and Hobbes.

I have a few webcomics that I’ve settled into following.

• XKCD, because of course (https://xkcd.com/)
• Recently started into Questionable Content, again, but we’ll see if I keep following it (https://questionablecontent.net/)
• I still follow Strong Female Protagonist, even though they haven’t had a new strip in… a while. I still hope they come back and finish up the story, but I seriously doubt it will happen. (https://strongfemaleprotagonist.com/)
• (Not technically a webcomic, but he does have some new stuff once in a while) The Far Side (https://www.thefarside.com/)

I keep up on a lot fewer webcomics now than I used to. I still regularly keep up on The Order of the Stick, xkcd, Penny Arcade, Goblins, and Dresden Codak. Only xkcd and PA keep anything like a regular update schedule, though.
I’ll still check out Dinosaur Comics and Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal on occasion, but no longer read every one.
I’ll also always take an opportunity to plug The Adventures of Dr. McNinja which is a lot of fun and is done - the rare comic with a story that actually got to its end (I guess 8 Bit Theater also qualifies here).

For me it varies by medium:

Movies: I’m a huge film fan and will watch and enjoy most genre’s but my all time favorite is Film Noir.
TV: Mostly I just watch anime at this point. My favorites are a mix of different genres, but Rom-coms tend to be the ones I look forward to most episode to episode.
Reading: The books that end up being my favorites tend to be existentialist or dystopian fiction but I find it hard to motivate myself to read those.
Games: JRPGs, plus everything made by Handleabra.
Podcasts: The only podcast I’ve stuck with for an extended period of time is The Letters Page.

My Answer to Yesterday’s Question: I like most Speculative Fiction, I’m particular about Comedies and Reality TV, and I dislike Romances.
