So, just had a game the Matriarch (not advanced) using The Scholar, Tachyon, Unity, and Expatriette. We got incredibly lucky, because we managed to defeat her with no problem at all. (On her first turn, she played Carrion Fields and Darken the Skies, no fowls. By the time she got her birds out, Tachyon was able to use Hypersonic Assault to kill them all and prevent retaliation.)

Things got confusing though when The Scholar played Don't Dismiss Anything. Tachyon revealed Lightning Reflexes while Expatriette revealed Unload. I assume Tachyon does indeed get her two plays when Lightning Reflexes gets put into play?

As for Unload, does it get wasted? Since it was still during The Scholar's play phase, we ruled that Expatriette couldn't activate any powers, but something tells me she should have (she had Pride and a Tactical Shotgun in play).

I believe that both cards would have been used normally, yeah. Tachy would get her two plays and Ex-pat would get to use her powers then and there.

Yep!  There are many cards that can let you do extra stuff if they're played out of turn.  Overdrive, Flame Spike, Smite the Transgressor, Eye on the Prize, and so on.  If a card says you can do something, you can do it, even if it's not your turn.

The big thing with DDA is to resolve the effect one hero deck at a time.

If Tachyon gets Fleet of foot, then everyone else draws the top card and she gets another card play, so everyone needs to wait and see what the first person got, let them resolve it and then the next person resolves for DDA.

The best is when DDA hits DDA for Scholar and Reclaim for Tempest.  If you weren't waiting and going in order chaos will reign.

Alright then, so in effect, the Matriarch would've really been beaten. We could've decided to take her on advanced then; Huginn and Muninn didn't hit the field until the end of the game and by that point, both Scholar and Tachyon could deal more than 10 damage each to the Matriarch.

So, for future reference, is there any card that would be wasted with Don't Dismiss Anything? (I know there are definitely cards that you wouldn't want to play accidentally...Fanatic's End of Days comes to mind...but I'm talking about cards that effectively don't do anything when played out of turn.)

I can't think of anything that would not trigger but there are things like Ground Pound and Grease Gun which get destroyed at the beginning of the hero's turn, so if you come after the Scholar in the turn order it's a waste but they still have their effects for that limited time.

Also, the Scholar himself may hit trouble if he's got elemental forms in play and DDA brings out "Know When to Turn Loose" - there is no "may" about discarding your hand on this card.

You might also be somewhat annoyed if playing Mr Fixer or Omni-10 and produce a Tool/Style or Plating card when you don't want to replace the one that you've already got in play (probably worse for a Style card since those get destroyed so you wouldn't be able to just replay it next turn unless you had another copy in hand).

Any Limited card of which you already have a copy in play would just be wasted, going straight to the trash.

Something which makes you mess with your deck when you don't want to might be annoying - for example, Tachyon putting out her "Draw thre cards, discard two" card when she has fewer than three cards in her deck and was planning on doing the full triple-Lightspeed-Barrage whammy on her next turn. Nightmist might also have a problem if she pulls Mists of Time or something, possibly.

Then again, you never have to play your top card - you can just put something from your trash on top instead (unless you have no trash, in which case I suppose you'd have to put your top card into play). Well, unless you had your entire deck in hand/in play (I've done that on the Adept before), in which case DDA would do nothing for you at all ;).

I do like DDA for its randomness, though. Had a game about a week ago (mentioned it on here somewhere the other day) where I played DDA every turn except the first and last - first I played Know When to Hold Fast, last I played Know When to Turn Loose (and finished off one of the two remaining members of the Ennead, after which Young Legacy nuked the other one to bits). For every other turn, I played DDA and used it to retrieve another copy of DDA from the trash, to be drawn in my Draw phase and used to retrieve the first copy from the trash again on my next turn. Meanwhile I was enlarging my hand via TLT's wonderful base power. Had I ever felt in danger of getting low on hp (ie had I gone down to around 10hp or so), I'd've started going elemental, but there was never any need - I never dropped below 20 and finished the game on 23 :).

DDA once made me hit Inventory Barrage with Wraith when she couldn't deal damage.

I may have sworn just a little.

Yeah the one problem with DDA is that once you choose the top card of your deck option it has to be put into play (unless the limited rule sends it to the trash) so cards like Inventory Barrage aren't optional,  We hit an inventory barrage vs. Miss fortune with no one to hit, and we've hit Salvage yard several times with no equipment in the trash.

The craziest turn we've run into with DDA was when we Timeshifted Scholar and hit DDA, which played Arcane Cadence (Adept played flare with it), Lightning reflexes (which involved a Fleet of foot), a reset (which played a reset and then a Tech Adv.) and Proverbs and Axioms (which just brought about chaos)  It took us twenty minutes to sort out that turn, and then no one remembered it was still Omni's turn and Tachyon got skipped.

You mean there was no non-hero target in play at the time? That means Inventory Barrage would hit a hero! Oh the fun!

It wasn't at the time. It took a few minutes for me to see the funny side…

Sounds like you had a magnificent game.  Yes, both cards played by DDA would have all of their normal effects even if it's not the right turn.  (One way another poster on this forum explained it to me, which I really liked, is that Unload's "you may use X powers this turn" works because your power phase is normally the game as a whole saying "you may use a power now".  If you play Load on your own turn, you could effectively resolve its effect immediately, using a power for each of your Guns, and then you couldn't use your Power normally because you've already used one or more powers.  It's a little abstruse, especially when you look at interactions like Embolden or Load, but in general the meta-rule of SOTM seems to be "don't overthink it; do what seems obviously right".  After all, it's co-op, so not much is at stake if you accidentally do it "wrong"…at most it means your bragging rights might be unjustified, but big deal, it's not like there's money or nationwide prestige on the line.)

Yeah, Matty is hard in a lot of other ways, but she's one of two villains whose Advanced text is potentially irrelevant (the other being Gloomweaver, if nobody in the game is restricted to physical damage).  I sorta panicked the first time I saw Matty's advance text though, because I'd already been destroyed by Muninn once; the idea of him being immortal was pretty awful, as I hadn't yet grokked that Matty flips pretty quickly and then a 0-HP Cohort will instantly drop dead).

So, for future reference, is there any card that would be wasted with Don't Dismiss Anything? (I know there are definitely cards that you wouldn't want to play accidentally…Fanatic's End of Days comes to mind…but I'm talking about cards that effectively don't do anything when played out of turn.)

Not as such, although there are cards (particularly in the decks of the two Infernal Relics heroes, Nightmist and the Argent Adept) which are only useful if you have certain cards in your hand or in play, and those might sometimes be un-useful if they turn up out of turn…they would also be un-useful during the players' own turn, given the same circumstances, but on their own turn they would just choose not to play the card.  (For Argent the worst card that DDA can turn up is probably Polyphoric Flare, if he has no "songs" out…"oh gee, I can hurt myself if I want to, and then do nothing".  In Nightmist's case there are several candidates - Call Forth and Mistbound if you don't have other cards to discard; Mists of Time if you have no trash, and thus simply take 2 damage to dump your deck into your trash, then reshuffle it the next time you draw; Mist-Fueled Recovery if no player in the game has more than 1 card in their trash, and don't especially want that one card back; and finally, any of the various Spells if your deck is completely empty, since if you don't have a topdeck card to discard for the spell's effect, the spell won't do anything.)

How did you get the first copy in your trash, if your first play was Know When to Turn Loose?  I don't remember the Ennead forcing you to discard cards (until Tefnut is incapped).

I never dropped below 20 and finished the game on 23 :).

Yeah, I hate it when that happens to me as Scholar, because for me he's all about going Mortal Form to Energy.  I'm like "Why aren't you hurting me?  C'mon, I need to almost die, so I can heal and zap you."

Look again - my first play was Hold Fast - my last play was Turn Loose ;).

In one of our games Scholar played DDA and played his card first.  It was a Know When to Hold Fast.

Apostate had the Tome of The Unknowable.

We became much more particular about play order with DDA after that.

I knew that, I just mistyped.  But the question stands, how did you get a DDA into your trash before turn 2?

In what order is DDA supposed to resolve?  Logically I would have assumed the player of the card would probably resolve it first…either that, or maybe the next person from him (making the Scholar last).

(Incidentally, Tome of the Unknowable was huge in the game I played on Saturday.  He Profane Summoned it on turn 1, Wraith avoided playing an IREP because it would have made her play the very card she peeked at, and then Nightmist's player decided he had to have cards after an Oblivion failed to kill Orb and Runes, so he drew once, and got the other Profane Summons.  If he hadn't gotten very lucky (and lots of help from Legacy and Visionary) on the second Oblivion, we would have been toast.

It doesn't specify, so the precedent is that it's up to the players.

I didn't get a DDA in the trash before turn two, I got it into the trash on turn two, then drew the second copy during my Draw phase (or possibly TLT's next power phase, as she was before me in the turn order). This meant I had the newly-drawn one in my hand and the one I'd just used in my trash, then kept cycling them round for the rest of the game while TLT let me enlarge my hand. Had I ever felt under threat of running low on hp I'd've started playing other cards (I had a couple of elementals in hand and three or four Keep Movings after a few rounds), but that never happened, so I just kept up the chain and let TLT and Young Legacy do a load of free stuff :).
