I just played a solo game against Plague Rat in the Pike Industrial Complex (super rats galore!), and MAN was it close. By the end of it, Bunker, Expatriette, and of course, Mr. Fixer were in the single digit HP levels. The MVP? Mr. Fixer!
Every time a new development would come around, Mr. Fixer had the answer. Constant 1 irreducible damage every turn? Praying Mantis! Need to get rid of those pesky lab rats? Jack Handle + Harmony + Charge! Not one, but two DR from Biomemetic Plasma Vat? Alternating Tiger Fist can fix that. (Mind you, I think the DR-2 played a huge role in keeping my heroes alive. I only had to worry about the irreducible damage (1 or 2 a turn, depending on whether infected)-once I'd gotten rid of all the infection cards in his deck, most of his one shots and ongoings were useless in the face of DR-2, while Mr. Fixer was completely ignoring it, hitting him for three a turn from just Strike, plus Overdrives and Charges). It was a long game, yes, but it was intense.
I have to say, I used to be of the mind that Mr. Fixer needed fixing, but now it was Mr. Fixer who completely saved my ass from a giant freak-rat thing.

Jack Handle is also a very strong counter to Infection, and Dual Crowbars is a pretty good counter to it.

These forums are bogus. Fixer has never let me down. Sure some games he gets a combo of cards and doesn't need to change up all game, but even then he just lays waste to the enemy. Bad ass!!

When Infection makes Mr. Fixer damage himself, if he has Jack Handle, he instead damages all non-Hero targets. If he's equipped with Dual Crowbars, he can damage another target of his choice, e.g. Plague Rat. It's the same deal with Afflicted Frenzy.

See, here is my perspective on Mr. Fixer. I, like many people, used to see Mr. Fixer as a bad hero. I have since then changed my mind, when I realized that Mr. Fixer is not meant to be a pure damage dealer. If you play him purely with the intention of dealing damage, yes, you will be disappointed. But that's not Fixer's job. As his name implies, Fixer is meant to fix things, to solve problems. Got a villain with DR? I have a solution for that. Got a villain target that's immune to a certain type of damage? Let me give them a taste of my Grease Monkey Fist. Dealing with way too many minions? Let me dig out my Jack Handle. Are we taking a whole crapload of damage? Nothing a little grease won't fix. Crap, did the villain just break all our equipment? Guess it's time to take a trip to the Salvage Yard.
I see Fixer as a kind of janitor for the other sentinels, cleaning things up. It's a thankless job at times, but a vital one. Fixer doesn't need fixing, he just requires adjusted expectations. Plus, if you do want to deal damage as Fixer, you just need a bit of backup. Legacy and AA can turn Fixer into a killing machine. Let me tell you, there are few things more satisfying than beating an alien spaceship to pieces with a few swings of a wrench.

I about love this turn of phrase. Thank you. While Legacy is about making the other heroes do more damage, perhaps Mr. Fixer is about making sure the don't fall down.
He didn't so much swing the wrench as turn it.

THIS. It is sometimes fun to choose Mr. Fixer, and have all my friends say "Dude, seriously? He sucks.", then later on in the game I end up fixing everything, setting it up so that Ra, or Tempest, or Haka can actually damage and finally defeat the villain.

Especially with alternating tiger claw style. And you thought you had damage reduction. I do enjoy the idea of Fixer versus Apostate, since the latter seems like the type to take himself very seriously, and being beaten by an old man with auto tools would probably be quite a blow to his pride. Apostate is monologuing about the inherent evil of mankind and then WHAM! Tire iron to the face.

Ive been playing a lot of Mr Fixer lately, and Ive noticed something
Why is Tool Box considered a bad card? Sure its not specific draw, but if you don't have your style/tool you need yet, you drop that down, draw two cards /and can do it again ont he next turn/ - thats 3 cards drawn a turn, and a power used, until you find whta you need. Thats friggin /huge/
Maybe ive just been lucky but ive had a tool box most games - and the games I havent ive generalyl had at least one tool and style - maybe nto the best for the job but something to put down and start taking advantage of. And he may just be plinking for 1 damage while your cycling with Toolbox, but... wow
We play a lot of l5r, and there is a similiar card calld Game of Dice. only it only works once. And its considered one of the better basic cards in the game, simply because of being allowed to draw 3 cards on your turn. Now thats a competitive game, and hving a card advantage in your hand -is- exteremly important to such games, but still. You can pull like crazy without help from anyone. Sure you'll still get some games where you dont have any of the above, but wow - those can't be that common where you dont have at least /something/ to contribute.

Toolbox is cool enough. You draw three cards that turn, and get a power use. The part where you don't feel like you're doing anything is the power use. If you're not set up, that power use is pretty underwhelming.

I think the frustration many people have is that Toolbox is a bad search card, which it is. Because it isn't a search card. On its own, Toolbox is a fine card, but using Toolbox to find a Tool when compared to, say, literally any card that allows a Hero to search for a card (minus Arsenal Access), it doesn't consistently get you what you need (what with it not being a card that allows you to search for a card). This is rather frustrating, but saying that Toolbox is a bad card because it can't search for cards is like saying you don't like the Mona Lisa because it's a bad music video.
That being said, I have had a few games where, with Toolbox, I would have to draw cards for three to five turns before I could get ahold of a Tool. Mad bummer.

Couple of cool things I noticed about Mr. Fixer in my game against Spite.
Toolbox is equipment, so Spite can bounce that back... and it was returning to your hand anyways. I was playing Expatriette, Wraith, and Fixer and that bouncing drug was the first card out. Stuff like the Toolbox was a blessing, plus the math worked out to where I only needed to bounce one card every round.
If you have the hoist chain out and use either charge or overdrive you double the -1 damage. This, Stun Bolt, and Expattriete using Nitrogen rounds and speed loading let me lock down Spite for multiple rounds when I was really low on health.
This would have been an amazing fight if I hadn't realized later I had forgotten Spite's play phase due to his end of turn effect. Playing solo is still a challenge for me and it was late

I'm curious how people use Fixer against Spite. What combo do you go for? Bouncing Toolbox aside, does he pull his weight in this fight, in your opinion?

I remember my first ever game with Rook City, Fixer-Expatriette-AbsoluteZero vs Spite. All other heroes incapacitated and Fixer with Driving Mantis, some tool and Harmony managed to edge out a win with 2 HP left.

He is a very good hero against Spite (on normal, I still did not try Spite on advanced).
The style that makes all damage dealt to spite irreducible if you can damage him + bloody knuckle is great, it makes the protection drug irrelevant - and bloody knuckle gets back to your hand. If you can have the pipe too, you have a tanking Mr Fixer who can break Spite's protection each turn. Or with hoist chain, you break spite's defenses and attack power…
If you can't manage this, Irreducible damage + hoist chain is a good alternative.
Thanks to toolbox, you can have a lot of cards in hand, very useful to save some of the victims, especially because fixer doesn't need a lot of cards.
The drug that have you take a card back in hand allows Mr Fixer to get his Styles back in hand - so he gets a lot of freedom. Not always useful, but it can be.
Compound XI (toxic damage any time you use a power) can also turn into a curse for Spite, with Fixer's Driving Mantis. Redirect the damage - maybe twice thanks to Overdrive ! You can even do it after Spite has his damage bonus if someone can hoist chain/stun bolt him.
My easier games against Spite have been with Mr Fixer - Wraith is good against him, too, but more fragile. Combine the two heroes and it works really well. Smoke Bombing coumpound XI damage to Mr Fixer, who then redirects it, is always fun. Add Ra and his "returning each and every turn" Staff and Legacy just because, and Spite will suffer.

Since this is a thread about what you like about Fixer I'll stay positive. I love the Pipewrench/Driving Mantis combo. If 3 damage is sent Fixer's way Pipewrench drops it to 2 so Driving Mantis activates for redirection. When you redirect you recalculate based on final target so it goes back up to 3. Math makes me smile. Pipewrench is also the only tool that lets Mantis activate while Bloody Knuckles is in play.
The Crowbar/Mantis combo is nice too since you can hit one target for 4 damage.

Driving Mantis only works once per turn, so you would be unable to make effective use with Overdrive. It is still a good tactic against Spite, just not that good.

Yeah i had Wraith and Fixer against Spite (and someone else i forget whom lol) but a combination of Driving Mantis style, and TWO Stunbolts on wraith with the utility belt ment that Spite was a gonner. Even with nemisis boost and damage boosting, the double stunbolt damage reduction ment that he just wasnt able to do anything. And fixer being able to bounc back his style really kept Wraith in the game.

Spite is Mister Fixer's best friend. With his Drug that mills five cards off of your deck, Spite effectively weaponizes Scrapyard to get you exactly what Tool you need, and the Drug that bounces cards makes Toolbox and Bloody Knuckles the coolest cards in existence. On top of that, nearly all of Fixer's Styles and Tools apply to Spite by either upping his damage, dealing Irreducible damage, or redirecting Spite's smaller damage effects (which he will heal if on his first side, but still...it's a pretty good temporary DR of 1-2). Also, Pipe Wrench provides DR and damage, Hoist Chain reduces Spite's Damage, Dual Crowbars increases damage and can potentially smack down any pesky Environment targets as a secondary effect, Tire Iron is...a card, and Jack Handle is still totally awesome even if it isn't that impressive against Spite. I still find Riveting Crane to be completely disappointing, as it cannot be used on it's own against the lowest DR of 1.
The point is, Mister Fixer is Spite's worst nightmare.

So... let's talk about Bloody Knuckles vs. Spite. It's nice that you can bounce it before Spite does three instances of damage to you, and we'll assume we're fighting in the harmless kitten environment. But whenever I've tried it, it always results in 5 damage to Fixer when Fixer tries to use his power, or 4 if he thought to bring his Pipe Wrench. This seems untenable. If he forces through Riveting Crane with this, then you label him a hero, but if he doesn't, it doesn't seem like this works all that well.
I'm just trying to understand.

I suppose that's true. My group just finds Spite to be pretty adorable when he's just bouncing cards and dealing damage on his flipped side. We generally don't mind it that Spite deals harsh damage when he can so easily have his damage reduced, prevented, or redirected. Worst case scenario is that he whittles the team down a little and then we completely tear him apart. I definitely see your point, though. That revenge damage can really smart after a few rounds.

I find it interesting that Fixer is viewed in the cannon is a old mechanic, that a lot of the Villains underestimate.
A lot of players view him as weak hero as well, but then he does something great out of the blue.
Anyway, I think it fits his story that he is not obviously a great hero, but that sometimes makes you go "What did he just do!"

Just played.
Miss Information has DR 5. Mr Fixer played Bloody Knuckles, use Strike with Riveting Crane, Dual Crowbars, Galvanize, Inspiring Presence to deal 1 puny damage to Miss Information. Then, the remaining heroes brought her from 44 to 14 HP. Next round, Mr Fixer was able to deal 2 puny damage to Miss Information. Legacy closed the game.
