Christopher once said, when talking about the core game, that he could beat any villain, on advanced mode, with any three heroes.  Well, sure.  He made the game, he can beat the game.  He reaffirmed this statement in a recent podcast, referring to everything published so far.  The example he gave was taking the damage-light Argent Adept, Visionary, and Legacy team against the Chairman.  If they made the most of the damage they have, these heroes could do it.

Do you believe him, or is he full of it?  Make your challenges here.  If you can think of a group of three that would have an exceptionally tough time with a villain, bring it here and we'll see if we can beat it.  If you defeat a challenge, simply post a session report, saying how your group overcame their percieved flaws to triumph in the name of all that is good and noble.

I honestly don't recall "Any Environment" being a part of the requirement.  If you really must be punished, or somebody confirms that was part of the challenge, then you can probably assume Rook City is the environment of choice.

I fought Akash'Bhuta on advanced with those exact three, because I wanted to see how it would turn out with the 3 heaviest support guys against the villain with the highest HP.

She didn't stand a chance.

ok, here's one. Haka, Wraith, and Tachyon against GloomWeaver.

Played it.  It's not hard.  They just bide their time and gank the relics when they come out.  Infrared Eyepiece can stack the deck, since Gloomweaver only plays one card a turn.

Yeah, I did too. I actually Savage Mana'd them, then dumped them all once I had them.

He sure likes to take his time with those relics, though.

Yeah i just did projectile/melee team of wraith, crono, legacy, and ExPatriette vs Gloom and shredded him.   It's not hard to just kill his stuff.

I'm not saying I dont believe him.   I definitely think its possible to win with any 3 heroes vs any villain.    But sometimes it is not easy.

Even so,  my money is on Fixer, Bunker, and Absolute Zero to lose vs Cosmic Omnitron.     These are 3  heroes that have long setup times and rely on having STUFF out against the destroyer of items himself.

I'd not give good odds on the same team vs the Chairman either =p.   Chairman can destroy you too quickly,  not a lot of time for setup.

Crono? Now we know Crono is a hero in ST!

sigh

Except that's not actually the hero's name…

awp832: Please be careful about what you say outside the playtesting forums.

First arenson9 with the dropping the name of the expansion a week early, and now awp832! I swear, you people keep it up and I'm going to start feeding the playtesters misinformation!

Who says I haven't already done so!

Well, until a recent revision, there was a villain (a new villain) tha would actually be impossible on advance mode against certain sets of three heroes and environment.  Not just so hard I can't think of anyone can do it, but, rather, scientifically provable that it is in fact impossible.  A small revision has been done, which has removed the impossibility for certain hero choices, but it is still increadibly difficult that it might be practically impossible for certain heroes (rather than truly impossible as it once was).

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Christopher translates to: "dangler of (mis)information in front of those lacking in knowledge" in some language.  Not sure which one, but I'm sure it's out there.

I went against the Chairman in Rook City with Visionary, Legacy, and the Argent Adept (in that order) on advanced and conceded defeat. Not because we were losing, quite the contrary. Legacy was able to tank almost too well, with Lead from the Front and and his power that grants him damage immunity of one type. Since the Chairman's deck uses primarily Melee and Projectile, there was very little damage that seeped in, and when it did, Visionary and the Adept were more than capable of taking their own hits. Add to that Legacy's Ring, Inspiring Presence, Danger Sense, and his Inspiring Strike heal-y power, and Legacy was able to take all of the damage away from everyone else. When I dropped out, Visionary had 20 HP, Argent 20, and Legacy down to 16.

Our problem, though, came from damage, clearly enough. On advanced mode, the Operative makes it much more difficult for any of these three to damage the Chairman (though with Legacy on the field in his setup of LFTF and Melee immunity, everyone could attack with reckless abandon) for anything that wouldn't be immediately healed with his little dip in the chemical bath. After the Crooked Cop came out (which left the Chairman with only about five cards in his deck, most of which Visionary knew), the team just didn't feel like waiting them out. The Chairman was unlikely to kill any of them easily, until his Hired Guns came back, but by then, Visionary could probably just wipe them with a Maelstrom or two with the Adepts help.

It was a strange match, to be sure. It was the first time Dr Tremata was able to help out with the environment for more than a couple of turns, though, since Legacy just took the 0 damage to allow Visionary to concentrate on damage or the Chairman's deck control. Maybe I'll try it again, but right now I just see it as two of my favourite characters depending too much on Legacy until they can scramble enough power to eliminate the Chairman, then repeating for the Operative, or vice versa. The best thing that could have happened would have been for Visionary to find Wrest the Mind and her Telekinetic Cacoon, pop it onto a minion that attacks everyone, and murder their bosses with him while the Adept heals said minion and his team.

Unfortunately, as lucky as their draw was for Legacy (and it was amazing, getting fully geared by turn two, thanks to the Adept), Visionary sat on almost all of her damage cards from the first turn and just Enlightened herself for a bit when no one else needed it. An interesting challenge, but I might just stick with whatever comes up on advanced mode instead of challenge runs.

They can't be too hard on awp.  I'm looking at the banner ad on BGG for the Kickstarter that has Angry Legacy on the left and an unshaven guy with a wide-brimmed hat and a piece of wheat in his mouth on the right.  Either Clint Eastwood is a hero in the expansion, or it's Chrono Ranger.  Not much mystery to it. :)

Nope, as I just revealed in the playtesting forum, that's YOUR GRANDFATHER! You people are monsters for beating up old people. What are you doing?!

Can someone tell me how to find this ad? I kept refreshing the SoTM page, but it never came up.

It's true, Christopher did say that. I'd post a screen shot, but I'm pretty sure that would violate the NDA I didn't sign.

It's the banner ad that appeared for me at the top of the SotM BGG page.

Well,

Although I believe that in most cases 3 heroes are enough...Christopher (or no one) can ALWAYS beat any villain, even Baron Blade (who is considered to be the easiest one) and with 5 heroes.

Imagine if after shuffling BB has "Hasten doom" as his first 4 cards. Then he has the "Consider the price of Victory" card. After the first round BB has 2+2H cards in his discard, and the heroes have at most 4 turns until BB crashes the moon :)

Similar thing can be done to heroes: Expatriette can be locked out if the only cards she gets are bullets, reload, spped loading, etc...but no gun. I counted there are 16 cards, hence she could be stuck without doing anything for 5-6 rounds. The same can be done for Absolute Zero (well known problem), Legacy (give him all cards that redirect or make, or reduce damage, legacy ring, but do not give him any damage dealing cards. He is stuck to giving +1 damage to other heroes), and I guess any other hero :)

That does not mean that you cannot on average beat any boss...it just means that you cannot ALWAYS ;)

thats part of what makes Deck based games fun - random factors!

If this was just a game where you had a sheet and a pool of powers to call upon, it would be boooaring.

Im just waiting till they have an expansion with 'optional cards' that you can sleave into decks to create interesting new decks...
