If a card does damage damage to multiple targets, do you have to deal that damage? i.e. Ball lightning where you might not want to deal lightning damage to a particular target.
With an ongoing card that does damage at the start of a turn, can you choose not to deal that damage? Our example is Impale played on Baron Blade when he has his Elemental Redistributer engaged - we’d prefer not to deal the cold damage as it would kill our weakest hero
Dealing damage is only optional if the word “may” is present. Dealing damae to multiple targets is optional only if the word “may” or “up to” is included. Not having the cards in front of me I can not tell you if said cards contain “may” or “up to,” but if they do, then the damage is optional. If they do not, then the damage is not optional.
I don’t know about that. The official ruling on Tachyon’s Sonic Vortex was that it does not require her to target heroes, and there’s no “may” optional wording on that card.
Hmm… the official ruling stated that heroes didn’t have to be targeted. And, in the case where the number of non-hero targets is greater than or equal to the number of targets specified by X, then you don’t have to target a hero, unless you so desired. Though, he wasn’t really specific enough as far as if you could choose not to satisfy the entire target count. The question was asked again, more specifically asking about having to satisfy all targets (as the card does not say “up to”) and has not been answered yet. If you don’t have to satisfy the entire target count, then the card is likely a “misprint” or sorts.

Yeah, Sonic Vortex SHOULD say “up to” for the things it targets. That one is totally a mistake. Whoops. Sorry, guys.
