With the imminent arrival of the 1.1 patch and the addition of 6 unlockable promo characters, I thought it would be a good idea to to start a thread for spoilers, hints, and speculation on how to unlock them.   My hope is that we can limit the spoilers to this thread to preserve the gaming experience of those who don't wish to be spoiled, while providing necessary information for those who want the promo cards and don't particularly care about figuring it out for themselves.

Please limit this thread to facts and speculation based on appropriately obtained information (e.g., first hand experience). If you have information as or from a playtester or if there is some way to view the programming code and glean information from that, please do not post it here.

Let the speculation begin!

I'll get the ball rolling:

MigrantP has stated that the unlocks will be hard to do. A reviewer for the patch said they had played all morning and not yet unlocked one. For these reasons, I assume the promos are unlocked by something more interesting than "win in Insula Primalis x times" or something like that.  They may even be related to the story challenges here on the forums.

We also know from screenshots posted on BGG that the six promo characters are Rook City Wraith, Super Scientific Tachyon, GI Bunker, Young Legacy, Mad Bomber Blade, and Cosmic Omnitron.

The first two theories I'm going to work on are beating Baron Blade in Megalopolis with the Freedom Four. I'll try regular and Advance Mode and if that doesn't work I'll try the Freedom Five.

For Tachyon my gut tells me that I need to either do a Lightspeed Barrage with 21 bursts in the trash or 3 Barrages in one turn.  Or if MigrantP and Co. hate us, 3x 21 burst Barrages in one turn.

All I wanted to say along these lines is the following -

At least a couple of the unlocks are the kind of thing that you could easily stumble upon while playing normally. The goal was not to force you to play the game in ways that are counter to how it's meant to be played. and in general, the villain variants are harder to unlock than the hero variants.

good luck! :-)

My speculation for Mad bomber Blade is as simple as having Legacy be the one to deal the final blow to Advanced Baron Blade

My guesses:

Mad Bomber Blade:  Agree with powerhound, probably have Legs deal the final blow to Baron.

Young Legacy:  Beat Baron Blade with Legacy defeated.

Rook City Wraith:  Defeat a villain with environment damage in a game with Wraith.

GI Bunker:  Have Visionary die to psychic damage, openning a portal to the past, then have Wraith use her grappling hook to pull GI Bunker out of the past???  Bunker might need to be incapped, I don't know.

Cosmitron:  Play the game against Omnitron during a solar flare.

We've said it in many places but I'll just reiterate here - Variant Characters (aka, promos) are all completely free additions to the game. The only cost is having to play the game and work out how to unlock them. :slightly_smiling_face:

Longer term, expansions (aka completely new content) will be paid, Variants will continue to be free unlockables.

OK, I just got the first unlock!  The Super-Scientific Tachyon is out of the box and ready to do some SCIENCE!!

I believe that the unlock trigger was getting 7 bursts in her trash without having any non-burst cards there, but I obviously can't relock her to test it, so go to it and let me know if I'm right.

Here's what I know for certain:

She unlocked just after I played a Nimble Strike on Blade for 1pt of damage (her 1, +1 from Galvanize, -1 from living force field)

Playing Nimbe Strike gave me my 7th card in Tackys trash, which consisted of only 6 other Burst cards.

Strike was the 3rd card I had played that turn (after a Fleet of Foot and Quick Insight)

She had the HUD gogles and Research Grant in play.

She was part of a 5 person team (Legacy, Tacky, Bunker, Wraith, & Tempest) vs. Normal Blade

Hmmm.... there's another possibility.  In conversation over at the Handelabra forum, I realized that playing Nimble Strike may also have been the 3rd card played in a round, for the 2nd consecutive round (Having played Fleet of Foot, the HUD Goggles, and Research Grant on the previous turn).

If I were speculating wildly (and I am, not even owning the app… or a device that can run the app!) I might try using Next Evolution to unlock Pauline Parsons, what with her being on the card and her being the "next evolution" of the Parsons' family line.

You didn't see that!

Thematically, I would propose that putting on the goggles and then playing research grant seems super scientific.

Also, I had nine bursts in the trash with nothing else, and that didn't work.

I agree that it would seem Super-Scientific, but the goggles and grant were definitely on the turn before the unlock, not the triggering event.

If you had 9+ bursts in your trash with no non-bursts, that bursts my initial theory.

It seems unlikely that the trigger was specifically off my use of Nimble Strike, so  I'd recommend using goggles/fleetfeet/pushinglimits, to have Tachyon play 3+ cards in a turn for multiple turns.

Can I suggest as they become known, putting them at the top of the thread?

For SST, I believe I unlocked it via HUD, Fleet, and Pushing the limits.

BTW, getting your team unintentially crushed by Baron Blade via multiple Basklash Fields is definityly not the way to unlocking his varient :-).

As I hoped would be the case, once you unlock the promo you can read the variant's bio in the Multiverse Section. It's fitting that Handelabra's exclusive Tachyon promo seems to be the easiest to unlock and her bio has some inspirational words for those of us striving for the unlocks.

Dear Handelabra,

I have extremely limited time that I can afford to play video games. What little time I have, I spend playing ~your~ game - your translation of my favorite tabletop game, Sentinels. As well, I encourage others to do the same.

Today, I am extremely sad and frustrated with your choice to diminish my support of your product by requiring me to jump through long, involved puzzle-solving hoops in order to "unlock" elements of the game I've been patiently waiting for since the day of the initial release.

For people like me, who only have so much time in their lives to devote to limited choices for entertainment, it would have been a great kindness and act of compassion to allow us to ~pay~ you for the additional content. If you want the social networking aspect of unlockable content, that's fine; just make both options available.

Let those of us willing to pay to get on with playing with the new toys do so, and let those who'd rather solve the puzzles to get the content free take that route.

Please consider this in the future for you other releases for this and other games.

Sincerely,

Sean Patrick Fannon

PS - Seriously, tell me where/how to send you money to get stuff unlocked for the current release and I am all over it!

I also got super-scientific tachyon.

I am not 100% sure of the details but she definitely unlocked when a card (fleet of foot) was put into the trash. It was my seventh burst in the trash (with no non-burst there). It was also my 5th burst going into the trash in a single turn.

The play was:
1st turn:

pushing the limits

synaptic interruption

discard 1 burst (i think accelerated assault)

(synaptic interruption got destroyed during the villain's turn)

2nd turn:

nimble strike

fleet of foot

fleet of foot

quick insight - discard 2 burst

2nd played fleet of foot goes into the trash --> THE VARIANT IS UNLOCKED RIGHT NOW

So my guesses are: putting 7 burst in the trash in the first 2 turns, putting 7 burst in the trash in  2 turns, putting 5 burst in the trash in a turn

Got Young Legacy unlocked!  Like people had guessed, it was about having Blade incap Legacy, but since that didn't work for others, there must have been more specific conditions that my game met.  To help with that, here's a quick info dump about what happened that unlocked her for me.

I stacked the fight to be as close as possible to what the wiki says about the fight where Legacy was killed, so it was at Wagner Mars Base and the rest of my team was Fanatic, Tachyon, and Tempest.  The actual damage that killed Legacy came from Blade, so you can't just have Tachyon Lightspeed Barrage him to take him out—though you can whittle down his health with other heroes so that he's prime for Blade's attack.  The variant unlocked immediately after Legacy's death, so it's not about beating Blade afterwards, it's just about Legacy being incapped.  It does not have to be on Advanced, mine was just a regular Blade.  Someone mentioned Next Evolution, given the art, and while I did have that out, I had not used the power at all during the game, so if it was relevant then it was presumably just about having the card in play when Legacy was incapped.  I don't know if it's significant, but the damage that killed Legacy was redirected to him through Lead From the Front, so if these other conditions aren't doing it for other players, it's possible that's important.  I wouldn't be surprised for any of those to be necessary/key to the unlock, as they all make thematic sense, but I'll have to leave it to others to test and see what works for them.  Good luck all!

Same game I opened Super Scientific Tachyon, I opened up Young Legacy.

Game notes:

Baron Blade vs Legacy, Tachyon, Visionary, Bunker, Wraith

at Wagner Mars Base.

Baron Blade killed Legacy through Backlash Field redirected via Lead from the Front on Visionary's turn after I used a Mind Spike.

Legacy was at 2 health before the Backlash Field triggered. On the field was Inspiring Presence, Legacy Ring, Lead from the Front, Next Evolution (triggered for Fire immunity)

Young Legacy unlock notice popped up. Then the Mind Spike card went to the discard pile.

I can confirm that the following conditions should exist:

1) Lead From the Front is out.
2) You are on Mars Base, fighting Baron Blade

3) The last damage done to Legacy must be from him redirecting damage away from an ally, using Lead from the Front.

This unlocks Young Legacy

So I just got mad bomber blade! Fought citizen dawn and wiped out all the citizens in the first round of combat. Maybe that did it? Was in megalopolis if that matters.

Don’t know if the significance is on the villain flipping in the first round on that stage or some combination of occurrences. Was using sst, young legacy, fanatic and haka.

I swore a blue streak when, at least 7 or 8 rounds in, I avoided a devastating aurora with the eyepice while pulling Blood out only to draw Citizen Truth. Luckily, I had just enough mustard to take them all down in that one round (go go gadget Wraith). I was going to lose at least one hero the next round, and have to start over I think.

I spent all game using double Eyepieces and not bothering to set Wraith up other than those and Smoke Bombs, figuring Legacy, Tachyon, Haka and Visionary could clean up. Visionary helped out by replenishing our sadly-diminished hands a little and removing the worst of Dawn's ongoings. Haka Savage Mana-ed as many pesky Citizens as possible, Synaptic Interruption saved us from serious damage many many times and Haka was sitting on a Rampage for practically forever and didn't even get to use it.

Getting your cards discarded every turn for so long is really painful and it took ages for Sweat to finally show up. And we totally lost the game, but it was worth it to get Mad Bomber!

Had the most boring and most interesting game against Dawn in order to unlock Bomber Blade. Had Legacy, Tempest, AZ, Wraith, and Haka on my team, and as you can imagine I had no trouble with anything. I had Legacy and Tempest healing for the first half of the game, smoke bomb shenanigans for the second half and overall it was a blow out. What was interesting was how long it took to get to sweat and tears. They came up in the same Infrared Eyepiece so I had to sift through roughly another third of the deck after I put out sweat (a mistake, but not a dibilitating one) to get tears. When she finally did come out, I took the most damage I took all game then got ready to smash them. I had Dawn in the teens all game so I had no problem getting the damage I needed to end it but I did go out of my way to have a little fun.

Tempest and AZ took care of the citizens for the unlock, so I saw how close I could get AZ to dying to thermal shockwave. Got him to 8 HP, more if tempest hadn't finished of 2 citizens, from 28 HP. Used that damage to kill legacy. then I used a inventory barrage on wraith with 1 equipment less than max. Killed wraith immediately. Ended it with a 17 card haka of battle plus a 8 card savage mana.

Easiest Dawn game I have ever played and also the longest. Who wants to draw out a game against Dawn?

Just a thought, since the update has anyone fought omnitron and left a drone around after you killed him? Seems a decent storyoint for cosmitron

2 times in a row I wait out Dawn until she has Citizens Blood, Sweat and Tears out.  Both times Fanatic is ready with an End of Days.  Both times... Hostage Situation twice in a row.  Second time Dawn saves me with a Devastating Aurora.  End of Days unlocks MB Blade and wipes the army of citizens, but Dawn is still at full hp.  All the heroes are in single digits.  Still managed a win with only Legacy incapped.  It's now turned off since I'm at work and was trying to go unnoticed...

I had Meteor Storm save Legacy from Baron Blade twice, and then when I thought I was going to let Legacy die by hitting the Baron and taking damage from a Backlash Field, the environment damaged Blade enough that Legacy couldn't hit Baron without killing him.  Eventually I managed to Eyepiece Slash and Burn to the top.  Yay Young Legacy!

If anyone is having trouble getting Blood, Sweat, and Tears out at the same time, here's a method I used that was pretty effective:

I played Legacy, SSTachyon, Ra, Visionary, and Tempest.

I used SSTachyon to Experiment on Dawn's deck.  Best case scenario, I would pull two Citizens out of turn and if they weren't Blood, Sweat, or Tears, they were dead.  If I pulled one of the three and a non-Citizen card, they would go to the trash where Visionary could use Suggestion to put one back on top or Return with the Dawn would put them back in play.  I could also use Precognition to try to get one of the main targets in play.  Incidentally, I killed off Tears the second she came out so I wouldn't have to discard a thousand cards.  On the turn before the unlock, I used Suggestion to put her on top to minimize the damage she would do.

By the time I got all three out at the same time, Dawn had 5 ongoings in play, so Drawn to the Flame pretty much cleared the board and got me the unlock.  As an aside, Precognition and Experiment are a great combination.  On one turn I used Precognition to put Devastating Aurora and a card with no matching keywords on the bottom of the deck, then discarded them both with Experiment.

I just went to Mars and hid behind a meteor storm until all 3 were out and then had Haka rampage on 12 of them. Interesting thing happened though. I had savage mana out and did not get Young Legacy until I emptied it onto Dawn. PS I had wraith using the eye piece to keep dawn from playing the card.

Hmmm. If Blood, Sweat, and Tears just need to go to the trash on the same round/turn, I'll bet you could Savage Mana them over the course of the game and you'd unlock the promo when you eventually discharged Savage Mana.

I know some kind soul already tried all six components on Omnitron for the Cosmic Omnitron unlock.

Adding to that, it's not:

* Tachyon removing three components with blinding speed

* Tachyon killing Omnitron with Lightspeed Barrage

* Tachyon blowing off all six components with Lighstspeed Barrage

All of the above tried in Insula Primalis.

Maybe I should try killing Omni with no equipment or ongoings. :)

I have a few more oddities to try with Tachyon / Omnitron, but bleah. I know someone did the Freedom Five already, to match the cosmic Omnitron story.

Your know I was thinking   Dawn unlocks Mad Bomber Blade.   So maybe Voss unlocks Comic Omni.

I'm also suprised a second person has posted somewhere that they would rather pay for these cards.   Personally I played the heck out of SOTM when it came out and was alreayd tired of it.   Having these new secret objectives has made it fun to play again.   Once more expansions come out this will be a super replayable game but with just the original game in the app it gets repetive.

I do not at all enjoy "un-playing" in a non-natural fashion just to unlock this stuff. I play to enjoy the game as designed, and would rather just get back to playing that way with all the new content.

My assertion is that both options should be available; for those who want to do the unlock hunts and get the material for free, good on them. For those of us willing to support the publisher with more money, why not?

At any rate, someone has posted their unlock of Cosmic Omnitron.

The conditions at the moment of unlock were:

  • Voss (Normal) in Megalopolis.
  • SS Tachyon, Fantatic, Rook City Wraith, Bunker in play
  • Triggered the moment they knocked out TFC Conqueror; they'd knocked out TFC Stalwart in the same round, but not on that turn.

I just unlocked Cosmic Omnitron!

Playing SS Tachyon, Fanatic, RC Wraith, & Bunker vs. Voss (normal) in Megalopolis.

The unlock happened when RC Wraith used a Throwing Knife to take out the TCF Conqueror (which had been out for more than one round already and was down to 1HP). In the turn immediately prior to that, Fanatic had used Wrathful Retribution to take out an undamaged TCF Stalwart in a single-shot (the Stalwart had just come out that round).

I had been pretty sure that other folks had already tried taking out both ships in a single round, so I wasn't even focused on that [I was trying to test having Tachyon used two Research Grants in a single turn (via Embolden) as I was figuring that Cosmic Omni was reborn in Meridith's lab].

So both ships were taken out in the same round, but not on the same turn. One had taken previous damage, one was hit with a single-shot the round it came out.  RC Wraith hadn't even finished using her Knives yet. Other state info, since I'm not sure hat might have been relevant:  RC Wraith had only her Knives and the Belt in play. Voss had nothing besides the Conqueror in play (having lost the Stalwart and a minon the previos turn).

Sorry for the late details, I got caught with some RL stuff at home moments asfter posting the tweet about the unlock.

Do we have a third yet for destroying both ships in the same round in Megaopolis to confirm that we're not missing anything?

As for the story connection:

I was specifically experimenting with Voss in Megalopolis and here's why.  Fighting Omni to unlock Cosmi, didn't make story sense.  According to the bio info on the Wiki, Omni had already been defeated and Cosmi was "reborn" while in Tachy's lab when a "cosmic entity" poked at the Omni parts.  So I figured that, just as Bomber Blade was messing around when heroes were fighting Dawn, perhaps the battle with Voss drew an entity's attention to Earth; and the battle was in Megalopolis as that made the most sense for where the lab would be located.

As I said above, I wasn't even trying for both ships as I thought others had done that already.  I was trying to trigger something with the Research Grant card (representing the lab) in Megalopois vs Voss.

Also, I'll chime in with a vote in favor of the unlocks. Not because I found two of them first, but because the hunt made for a fun 30 hours.  Now that the info is out there, unlocking the heroes is pretty easy.  The villians are a bit harder, but it mostly just gives you a direction to play rather than just using randomize.

If you had to unlock the expansion packs, that would be annoying.  But as all you really get from the variants is a different power for a hero (rather than a full new deck, character, environment or villain), this was fine with me.

Just killed both ships in one round, same turn even, but no unlock.  For reference, I'm also using Wraith (normal) in Megalopolis for my takedown on the ships, a Razor Ordinance on one and Throwing Knives on the other.  Tachyon had been killed the round before thanks to an ill-timed Cramped Quarters Combat making the ships immune to everything, though, so I'm guessing that having Tachyon in your team and alive is necessary---given her involvement in the backstory for Cosmitron, that would make sense.

Yeah, requiring Tachyon makes some sense for the story. It also makes for a parallel to the Young Legacy unlock, in that  the unlock requires  a specific action to happen, while a specific hero is present, fighting a specific villain, in a specific environment.

for reference, In my game Tachyon had both her Research Grant and HUD Goggles in play.  It's probably not important, but I could see the Research    Grant (representing her lab) being potentially important, in the way we were theorizing that Legacy's Lead From The Front may be required.

[Edit: I had referred to the MB Blade unlock, when I meant Young Legacy. fixed]

For me I had Tachyon take out the whittled ships with a Sonic Vortex.  Tachyon only had HUD Googles in play.   It sounds like it has be in Megaopolis, both ships have to be destroyed in the same round, and that some version of Tachyon is in the group.

If you don't want a spoiler then they remain puzzles. I'm at the point in the game personally where I like looking for new challenges. I really like the secret unlock/puzzle aspect of it, even though I ended up not having the patience to avoid spoilers.  I accidentally unlocked Tachyon, then I needed to have the others ASAP.  I thoroughly enjoyed figuring out ways to unlock the two villains without dying and I agree with Heian above that sometimes I enjoy doing weird games where I don't just try to beat the villain as quickly as possible.  Now that I know the kinds of actions that are needed to unlock the promos, I'll probably try harder to unlock them on my own next time, especially if it's a character I really enjoy playing.

For what it's worth, I unlocked Cosmitron a few minutes ago in Insula Primalis.  I was using Legacy, SS Tachyon, Haka, Visionary, and AZ.  Voss had no cards out other than the the Conqueror, but I knew that the Stalwart was his top card.  Sub-Zero Atmosphere caused the Conqueror to attack at the start of turn and I destroyed it using Isothermic Transducer on Voss' turn.  Then he played the Stalwart, which I killed on AZ's turn later in the same round.  Hope that helps.

I've taken down both ships five different times in Megaopolis (which can be really difficult getting on the board).  I had Tachyon with Research Grant and without.  Also had her with HUDs and without.  Sometimes it was just Voss and the ships, other times there were minons.  Destroyed the ships with Taychon, with Wraith, and with Ra, but still did not unlock.

This is one reason I would like for Handlabra to add card tracking and sharing.  It would allow for better collaboration.

Should have had the unlock last night, no idea what I did differently that mattered but it worked this time.

Megalopolis

Legacy / Super Science Tachyon / Wraith / Absolute Zero / Haka

No cards out other than the ships. Absolute Zero scored both kills.

Also, 27 points thermal shockwave to kill Voss. If I'd put any more mustard in it, it would have absolutely zeroed Absolute Zero :) Not as silly as the time I took down a full-strength Voss with a single mighty Haka belch.

On a side note, how are you guys getting the killing blows with Haka? Both ships are immune to Melee. If you finished the first one off with Savage Mana, the other would come out... Twist the Ether? Imbued Fire?

Also, Cramped Quarters Combat also makes this significantly less easy.

Yeah, still not sure what the extra condition is---I've now also killed both ships in a round in Megalopolis with Tachyon still alive and in play.  That time I used End of Days for it, mostly just for fun.  Pretty sure I had SST Tachyon's Research Grant and HUD Goggles out that time, though I can't swear to it.  If it's the order of the two ships, that might explain it, as I didn't pay attention to that.  Though that would seem like a bit of a nit-picky condition to require, so I hope it's not that.  I don't even remember which of them is which most of the time.

My unlock of Cosmitron to help. Megalopolis, Legacy, Tempest, SS Tachyon, Visionary, Haka

Killed the ships separately and then savage mana'd for the unlock. Voss was on his backside, no minions, quarkdrive was out.

Did the savage mana, haka of battle combo for 78 damage (had some help from Legacy and visionary). It took forever to get the second ship out, if i did it again I might switch Tempest for wraith, however hiis early crowd control was super useful, as well as his mid/late game cleansing downpour

One possible gripe was when I dealt Tempest rampage damage (was putting a late game forced deployment's worth of minions undersavage mana), it took forever to start calculating the damage

OK, so let's work on this analytically.  What do we know and what do we need to figure out:

Unlocking Cosmic Omnitron

Need:

While fighting Voss, destroy both ships (Stalwart & Conqueror) in the same round

+ Mystery Condition

The Mystery Condition does not seem to be any of the following:

Team composition - Cosmi's been unlocked using non-overlapping sets of heroes  - so it can't be something unique to a specific hero.  [Has anyone unlocked Cosmi without having at least one variant hero on the team?]

Fight Location - Cosmi's been unlocked in both Megalopolis and Insula Primaris - so it can't be something unique to a specific env

What else have we mentioned in this thread…

Order of ships destroyed: I unlocked after taking out Stalwart first, then Conqueror worked and Chromium got it after the other order, so that doesn't seem to be relevant (which is good as it would mess up people using Savage Mana as you can't control the order it sends things to the trash).

Who does the damage / damage type: Probably not relevant, Cosmi's been unlocked after one hero destroyed both ships and after different heroes destroyed them on subsequent turns in the same round.  I've seen a couple of reports of Savage Mana unlocks, has anyone confirmed an unlock with End of Days?

Single-Shot vs. whittling: I unlocked Cosmi after single-shotting one ship with radiant damage and plinking another that was at 1hp with a projectile. Other folks used Savage Mana to discard both at once. Powerhoud took out both ships after they'd been previously whittled down.  Seems like this isn't relevant, unless I'm missing something

Voss's board: Has anyone unlocked Cosmi without having Voss's field cleared? I don't think this is relevant as Carlos said he'd gotten both ships and "Sometimes it was just Voss and the ships, other times there were minons." but do we have a data point of someone actually unlocking while Voss had other cards in play?

Voss's state: I unlocked him with Super-T Warrior side up (as did others who had been taking out all the minions). Has anyone unlocks Cosmi with Voss in Warlord state?  Voss had 81HP and 7 cards in his trash at my unlock.

Active Hero state: My unlock was triggered by RC Wraith doing 1 point of damage to the Conqueror. Wriath had 7HP at the time.

Story possibilities: Cosmi's bio says that a "mysterious cosmic entity" rocked Tachy's lab with "cosmic rays" which "gathered the many technological advancements of the lab together" and "bound them all together with wires and connections of pure energy." We know Tachyon's not required, but could there be another clue here?  Might destroying the Quark-Drive Translocator also be relevant?  Seems unlikely, but I'm trying to search for what we might have missed

Anything else?

Not sure what I am missing have failed a total of 4 times with diffferent teams. Killed both ships in a single round all 4 times. Twice killed both ships in a single turn.

Has anyone successfully unlocked Cosmin-O with End of Days? Maybe that is part of the problem.

EoD causes destruction during the environment turn. Maybe the ship destruction needs to be during hero turns? Have not yet been able to test this though...

Incaps - There's a screenshot on Twitter of someone unlocking Cosmi while on an incapped hero's turn, and muliple people have unlocked without any incaps, so that doesn't seem to be relevant.

Promos - The interesting point in NumberSix's post is failing to unlock Cosmi after killing both ships in a round with at least one Variant hero in play.  That seems like it eliminates "Need to have a Variant" as the missing condition (unlesse there's more to it).

Like  phantaskippy though,  I would still like to hear of someone unlocking Cosmi without using a promo hero, just to be certain.

I unlocked Cosmitron without using promos. My team was Legacy, Tachyon, Wraith, Haka and Fanatic. No incaps. No minions, and I killed the Quark Drive a couple of turns before.

I believe Wraith took out the Stalwart with Throwing Knives after it had languished at 1hp for most of the game, with Haka one-shotting the Conqueror the next turn with Savage Mana. Interestingly, it didn't unlock when I put the ship under Savage Mana but I rewound and corrected that mistake and it worked.

The rest of the game was... interesting. All heroes were at 2-4hp, Voss was at 43. And I won. Yeah!

New here.  Hi!

As silly as it sounds, anyone experimented with Voss having an odd # of HP when the ships go down? That seems to be a commonality that someone mentioned on the thread earlier.

Or maybe I dreamed it.

I know that doesn't really have story implications...but maybe that's it?

Anyone unlocked with Voss at an even # of HP?

clear field

voss at 5 HP

Two forced deployments as the only voss trash before the ships hit

five member team, visionary, wraith, legacy, Ra, Haka.

no promos, no tachyon.

both ships hit the trash on Haka's turn.

For those of you working mad bomber. I would strongly suggest you not play in Magalopolis. The heroes need to be away from the city when baron blade tries to blow it up.

To correct myself, the odd # of HP was actually mentioned as an aside on the Handelabra forum, and not in this thread.

It is a strange theory.  But I can't see any other commonality between others' unlocks so far.

I'd have to double-check my screenshots (I don't have my iPad with me now), but I'm 90% certain that I didn't have any Forced Deplyments in the trash when I triggered the unlock.  It happened fairly early in my game as I had lucked into both ships coming out while hunting for soemthing else.

I don't think that Voss at odd number of HP is it.  The screenshot at: https://twitter.com/DomanRyler/status/540327487218388992/photo/1 shows an unlock happening with Voss at 42HP.  I'd like to think that it's not something as arbitrary as odd number of HP though.  That would be disappointing.

Side note: That screenshot also shows an unlock in Atlantis, the first of those that I've seen.

GAH! I know I'm going to smack myself in the head when we finally figure this out.

I guess I have to declare myself stuck:

I have killed the two ships many times now, in many configurations of heroes, in two environments, with no luck.

I have killed Voss the ships with Voss on both sides of his card, have killed with almost no trash dead, have killed with a lot of trash killed (including quark drives killed same turn or before), ...

Before last few attempts I reread all the previous posts to see if someone in a successful run did something I had not tried, I saw a few things tried them but no joy.

When I get back later this evening I will again reread posts and see if something stands out.

Good luck to those who have not yet been able to unlock it.

There is no user data in SotM that survives an app uninstall/reinstall. That includes continues, options, variant info, etc. Your game will be exactly like someone installing it for the first time ever.

A word of caution: if you are interested in seeing stats/etc about your historical game data in a future update, I would advise against deleting the app. Some things are being recorded for future use.

From the perspective of us players, the optimal solution would be some sort of account with Handelabra that stores all our unlocks, game data, etc, but I understand that from a programming and maintenance perspective, that's a huge pain in the behind for Handelabra.

I think a really cool compromise would be a feature in the game, under options, that gives you a code (some sort of a hash) that is basically like an old school Nintendo code.  If you wanted to (for instance) install the game onto a newly purchased tablet, you could export the code from your old copy, install it on the new copy, enter the code, and pick up right where you left off.

This would also be super awesome for the upcoming Steam release.  I plan to buy it on both platforms, so it would be awesome if I could pop-out some code from my android copy, enter it into my Steam copy, and *boom* have all my stuff without doing the unlocks again.  This could also satisfy people that don't want to bother with unlocks, as they could just beg a code from someone that has everything unlocked.

Okay, so finally got Cosmic Omnitron unlocked. This is the second tried, the first one fail. I forgot the hero but it againts voss in Megalopolis. Destroy the ship on the same round, and nothing happened.

Data For the Unlock :

Villains : Voss

Hero :Legacy, Haka, Tempest, Wraith and Visionary

Enviroment : Insula Primalis

No incap, no minions, 2 forced deployment in the trash, and nothing else.

Conqueror comes ot whittle it to 4HP, then use wraith eyepiece to put stalwart on top. The next turn destroy conqueror with haka's taiha, and destroy stalwart with tempest basic power. Voss's HP is even (Don't know is this matter or not).

Team was Visionary, Young Legacy, SST Tachyon, Wraith, and Haka.

Looking for some info from the folks who have and haven't unlocked Cosmitron already---had you fought Omnitron right before the Voss fight?  In the same play session?  Since the update?  Both of seesome's posts that the Handelabra guys have linked to as containing the key info mention the story element that Omnitron had already been defeated, so I'm wondering if that could be relevant.  I haven't fought Omnitron since the update, so that's a possibility that we haven't looked at yet that would explain my two strike-outs.  I imagine someone will eliminate it as an option shortly after this post, but had to ask.

Handelabra just favorited and retweeted a chunk of our discussion about fighting Omnitron first as the condition, so I think we must be closing in on it—might be slightly more or less specific, but I recommend everyone who has not been able to unlock Cosmitron yet give that a try. To minimize frustration, I recommend using Tachyon in the Omnitron fight, too, just to be safe.

As HeroComplex said, the Handelabra folks retweeted a post of mine that specifically mentioned defeating Omni first, then Voss. As this fits with the story from Cosmitron's bio, I think we're close.

If it works, the question then become what's required in the previous battle. I think the answer to that has to do with what game history is likely to be tracked.

My guess is that Tachyon probably has to be involved in defeating Omnitron prior to the Voss fight. Having the fight in Megalopolis is less likely to be part of the trigger (but still could be required). The Research Grant May have just been color on my part, and I'm guessing isn't really part of it (although...?)

This is potentially a game-changing bit of information for me. While most everyone else seems to have moved on to cracking Omnitron, I'm still stuck trying to get Mad Bomber Blade to unlock. If the requirements are spread out across multiple games, that could very well be my problem. I haven't really ever spent much time with the original Blade, mostly while I was still figuring out the rules of the game. I doubt I've even beaten him more than a small handful of times. It could very well be that something has to be done there before the Citizen Dawn part can be triggered.

EDIT: That was it. I must have played a dozen games against Dawn yesterday without getting anywhere. So I went up against Baron Blade first to see if that made a difference. My next fight against Citizen Dawn unlocked the card.

Maybe, but possibly not. I haven't played a game against Baron Blade since before the first patch was released, so maybe before that it the game wasn't tracking whether or not he'd been defeated. That could be why most everyone else could unlock the card while it wasn't working for me.

Thanks to the fourms for the helpful ideas on Omnitron. Beating him first solved my issues and the promo card was my last unlock.

The irony for me is that I had beaten Omnitron many times before. But when I heard the updated 1.1 version would address memory issues, I deleted my game to make sure to have a "clean" install. Hence all my previous defeats of Omnitron disappeared.

I will cast a vote in favor of the unlock puzzles to get the promos. I had fun trying to solve them and in exchanging ideas on how to get all of them unlocked. I am not the world's most patient person so I only solved two of them on my own. But had fun working on the others and then figuring out a good plan to accomplish the goal once they were known. So, for example, I learned what I was supposed to do to unlock Baron, but sorting out the best way to execute on that goal took a few games.

Can not wait for the expansions.

Just to confirm, you do not need to defeat Blade in the game immediately prior to fighting Dawn and getting BST out in the same round in order to unlock MB Blade.  I just tested this and fought Omnitron first, then fought Dawn.  When I wiped BST, Blade unlocked.

Admittedly, I did defeat Blade a couple of games earlier, but it doesn't need to be one then the other.

I do have a clean iPad in the house that I haven't played on since the upgrade and I'll probably use that to test some of the edge cases (it's an iPad 2, so I didn't really use it for SotM due to the crashes - this'll let me test if the reduced memory really helps or not).

Well, after banging my head against the game for hours yesterday trying to get Mad Bomber Blade to unlock, I was pleasantly surprised to get Cosmic Omni on my first try. Of course, I found out ahead of time what needed to be done, so I can't give myself that much credit. Still, I my strategy for taking out both ships turned out to be very effective. I did the fight in Megalopolis with Absolute Zero, Haka, Bunker, and Tempest. Both ships were almost all the way at the bottom of the deck, so it turned out to be a fairly lengthy battle. I'll go though each character's role in detail, in case someone might find the information useful.

Absolute Zero - Not much to say here. He helped to soften the first invasion wave while the other heroes were still setting up and soaked up quite a bit of damage. Probably could have been someone different.

Haka - One half of my victory strategy. He did the bulk of minion-killing during the early game. Once I had Savage Mana and a sizable attack wave I had him use Rampage to put most of Voss's forces on lockdown. His health got dangerously low at one point, but a timely Haka of Restoration kept him going until the end. When both ships finally showed up, he took out the first one with Savage Mana (also discarding his entire hand to Haka of Battle, just for fun), hitting for 39 points.

Bunker - The second ship killer. He had a bad draw for the first several rounds, so he didn't contribute much to the fight until the very end. I eventually got him into Recharge Mode with his Heavy Plating in play, which negated most of the damage that came his way. He spent the rest of the fight quietly charging his Omni Cannon, in order to take out the second ship with a 44 point blast.

Tempest - He did a bit of healing and damage-dealing early on, But his main job was to become incapacitated. After that, I used his damage immunity ability to help keep the rest of the team alive while I waited for Voss's fleet to show up.

Yes, and that's exactly what I did when I unlocked the Blade promo. For Omnitron, I decided that it would be better to take a slower approach so that Haka and Bunker would have time to build up the damage required to finish them both off in one shot. Still, using Wraith in place of Absolute Zero probably would have been a good choice. I could have just waited until I was ready before starting to dig through the deck.

I used SST, Visionary, Wraith and Fanatic.

Burning cards from the top and bottom of the deck found the ships pretty quick, Once I found the second, I just suggestioned the one in the trash on to the top so they came out in the sameturn, then a nice Final Days achieved the unlock.

I really liked all the unlocks.  They were very thematic, which is way cooler than just setting arbitrary requirements.

I hope they stay thematic, I esp. liked having the previously defeating the villain and then fighting the match away from them.

Really great job, it was a lot of fun.  I'm actually looking forward to getting my new Tablet and doing it all over again.

Now that we've figured out all of the current unlocks, I thought it would be helpful to collect the triggers into one post and make it sticky somewhere. So I just ran through everything again on a clean tablet and here's what we've got:

Sentinels of the Multiverse Digital Game 1.1 Variant Unlocks:

G.I. Bunker: Use all three of Bunker's modes in one game

Young Legacy: While on Mars, have damage from Baron Blade incapacitate Legacy *

Super-Scientific Tachyon: Put 5 bursts into the trash in a single turn

Rook City Wraith: Use two Infrared Eyepieces in a single turn

Mad Bomber Blade: After defeating Baron Blade at least once, fight Dawn and destroy Citizens Blood, Sweat, and Tears in one round **

Cosmic Omnitron: After defeating Omnitron at least once, fight Voss and destroy both of his ships in one round **

Tips:
* Lead from the Front isn't necessary, but can make this a lot easier.
** The order that the Citizens/Ships are destroyed in doesn't matter, as long as they destroyed in a single round. Infrared Eyepiece(s) or Suggestion can be very helpful for getting the required targets out at the same time. Getting the required targets under Savage Mana, then using that to destroy them does count for the trigger. The prevously required victory does not need to be done immediately prior to the triggering battle.

Let me know if anyone encounters any contradictory info and I'll update this.

  1. Yes, it definitely works better on the iPad 2 now.  It still slows down dramatically and crashes occassionally, but not nearly as frequently as it did before the 1.1 release.

2a) I don't know if "more evil" is necessary. This felt about right to me and if it was much harder, then you'd have more complaints from folks just wanting to pay to unlock them (although if that was an option as well, then "more evil" doesn't matter).  That said, I'd also be fine with the trigger conditions being harder, but not secret - sort of like story mode challenges that are visible to the players.

2b) Related to the above: As others have said, I loved that the unlocks were either based on the backstory or key elements of the characters' mechanics, that felt right as the rich world of Sentinels is part of why I love this game. However, to make it more fair in the future, you might want to consider having the variant bios be visible in game prior to the unlock as knowledge from the wiki shouldn't be required.

  1. Are you planning to release the second wave of variants along with the next expansion, or should we expect expansions and variants to continue to be separate releases?

I wouldn't be opposed to the idea that the next wave of variants could have a more complex set of requirements. However, something that dispeases me about the current batch is that the game gives very little context for what must be done to unlock them. The only way to figure out how to get the cards without consulting online wikis or message boards is to just fumble around at random and hope that something happens. To me, this doesn't make for compelling gameplay.

I have two ideas that might make the unlock process into something more interesting. The first would be to have some little bit of story or a cryptic clue that would pop up to give some hint about how to proceed. It wouldn't have to give away much, just a tiny nugget to start us off in the right direction.

My other idea would be to have more elaborate multi-step unlock process, but to provide breadcrumbs along the way. So, whenever a player completes one part of the objective, give us a little cutscene or paragraph of text as a reward. These milestones could also include additional clues, but they would mostly serve to let us know that we're making progress. There might also be an alternate result that would come up if we were to complete a goal out of sequence, but that might take things too far with the hand-holding.

Having a hint in the form of a newspaper headline would be awesome:

It could be Blatant:  "Newest Legacy seeks justice for her Father's death on Mars, Baron Blade in hiding." (or whatever would be appropriate)

Or a series of less blatant Headlines:  "Is Baron Blade on Mars?"  "Freedom 5 to Mars, "Baron Blade must be stopped"  "Newest Legacy seeks Justice for Father's death."

Just putting a headline like that after each match would be cool.

If they don't want it in the post-match sequence you could unlock a new headline, and have a little place to go look and the headlines would be organised by what promo they were giving you clues about.

I think hat would be agreat feature to add, and it could work through promo's in a specific order, giving hints until that one is unlocked, then start giving clues for the next one.

This would be great for later on too, when someone picks up the game and there are a bunch of promo cards to unlock, it would feel more organic.

Or there could be a mix, like after defeating Omnitron get a hint about fighting Voss, and then one about ships in the sky, or a military memo/plan to take out both ships at the same time.  That kind of stuff could be really cool, and almost creeate a bit of storyline for new players to play through if they get the game after multiple expansions come out.  If they don't figure it out after a bit give them a more blunt hint that pretty well lays out how to unlock it.

Coudl even add some dialogue explaining the promo, like you unlock Mad Bomber and he gives a little speil about taking vengeance on the city while the heroes are away, then show the unlock.

The promo challenges offer a great way to teach the story of the Multiverse, this time it was geared for thsoe who already know a lot of it to figure out how to recreate the story, but for new players telling the story through the game might be a lot more fun, and create a better bond with players.

Yes! News headlines would be perfect! Make them deliberately vague, so that there is still a puzzle to solve, but at least we wouldn't be starting from nowhere.

This could also evoke the feeling of a rather loose campaign mode if done properly, which I'd imagine many players would appreciate.

EDIT: Another more subtle way to reveal a clue might be to slip it into the banter that happens during the new opening cutscene. Perhaps one of the characters could occasionally say something that hints at something related to one of the promo cards. Maybe it could be something that triggers at random, or only shows up if certainly conditions are met. Maybe figuring out how to make a character say their "clue phrase" could be a challenge in itself.

A storyline would be fun, and definitely especially good for new players.

I like to think of myself as pretty knowledgable when it comes to the Multiverse, but I just would never have thought to kill both of Voss's ships in quick succession to unlock Cosmitron despite knowing the relevant bit of lore. Although I enjoyed getting the promos and like having them to play with, the whole experience wasn't as satisfying as it could have been. If I hadn't "cheated" I'd probably still be messing around trying to get everything (except SST and RCW which I'd have lucked into pretty quickly).

Has anyone actually properly figured out how to do the unlocks? Like, thematically? From what I can see everyone's either messed around in a trial-and-error kind of way, unlocked by accident, or looked it up on the internet.

Also it would be good to know if we're getting close to the right conditions. Right now the feedback is binary - you either unlock or you don't - and there's no way of knowing whether you were on the right lines getting Legacy killed by Blade in Megalopolis. "Almost" is currently exactly the same as "a million miles away".

Just going to throw this out there: what if you automatically get the variants, but you have to unlock the bios?

I actually enjoyed the community puzzle solving part.  I'd like to keep that, there are a good number of people who will enjoy solving the puzzles as a group.

But, the experience will be totally lame for new players who have 10 promos or more to unlock and need to go look up a how-to guide that tells them what match to play where and how best to get all the card unlocked, instead of playing through a story that unlocks new stuff while entertaining you and helping you connect with the story.

Or maybe the clues could be easier to figure out (or even blatantly explicit) but the actual task you have to do to get the unlock is difficult to complete?

Yep. For people who don't already know the stories, they are basically jumping through meaningless hoops for many of the unlocks. The conditions may as well be random. Use hero X, kill minions Y and Z, unlock promo W. Many forumites (me included) didn't know why the irritating trio had anything to do with Mad Bomber Blade, so I'm sure that was completely lost on new people. And that's a shame, because the stories are cool.

That's why I think the initial release of promo's like we just had is good, but a future update adding in story clues that guide you to the unlocks would turn what will likely feel annoying and pointless for new players into something awesome and fun.

Lots of good ideas on this page. I was joking about the more evil... a little =). We are definitely taking notes on how it went with this batch!

We'd love to have more story stuff in the game, but that's one of many things we want to do with limited resources. Eventually we hope to include a campaign mode and so on, but things like expansion packs and online multiplayer have to take priority for now.

I'd say that the best approach would be to use a combination of both. Have some challenges that are easy to moderate in diffulty, but present the player with extremely vague and incomplete information about the objective. Name-drop the villain, for example, but leave it up to players to work out the other details. On the other hand, other goals could be explained directly, but be designed so that it take some hefty creative thinking in order to bend the rules in such a way as to make them completeble.

Oh, certainly. Expanding the core of the game takes priority over fluffy additions like a story mode. There will be plenty of time for things like this later.

Campaign mode: Freakin' yes. I would buy this on my PC/Steam if you guys can make an engaging campaign mode with story details and bits. This is a must.

Online Multiplayer: Iagree. This has to be priority #1 for you guys.

I think you folks are doing a fantastic job. Keep it up.

I really enjoyed unlocking the promos and trying to figure them out as a community.  I can't wait for the expansions.  Campaign mode would be awesome.  And if cooperative on Steam allowed 2 people to play on one computer and 3 on another, I could play Sentinels with all of my friends easily and that would be AMAZING!

The villians were by far the hardest, and for me cost me the game trying to hang on to dear life until the conditions were met (despite having both eyepieces scan the villian deck). I would never have guessed that blood/sweat/tears had anything to do with Baron Blade, or that Voss's ships had anything to do with Omnitron thematically, other than the fact that doing so utilizes all four villians, and thus forces you to play each one to unlock everything.

The heroes I more or less had the right idea on, although I checked here for hints (not fully reading the comments so as not to spoil the entire puzzle). I even destroyed Bunker's recharge mode, played upgrade mode, and used the extra play to go to turret mode in the same TURN. Wasn't aware it had to be the same game, so I stockpiled mode cards and focused on pure draw power.

For Wraith my first idea was to equip as much stuff as possible, as I initially suspected the trigger condition was to have all of her equipment cards on board, and to then use Infared Eyepiece. Then I attached another, and it worked.

I just felt the villians were both challenging when meeting the condition, as well as figuring out what that condition was.

Just unlocked all 4 heroes in the same game. True, I looked up Wraith, Bunker, and Tachyon, but I didn't actually look up how to unlock Young Legacy. I just happened to redirect damage to him that killed him.

All promos unlocked on the first try for each.  Here's a few tips:

Wagnar base (if allowed)  -Super important, just sit under a meteor swarm until ready to do what needs to be done.

Use Visionairy - Super important, Make the target draw more cards to speed up the process,  hide the villian cards that can break up what you are trying to do.

Use Tempest:  Good healing, crowd control spot removal and can recover dropped combo pieces you need

Use Fanatic:  End of Days lets you cheat on a few.  Visionary can help you get to it quicker.

Use Legacy:  Can tank damage until you can get under a meteor swarm.

Looks like unlocking Cosmitron requires the Omnitron battle to be immediately prior to the Voss battle. I fought Omnitron, then failed to get the two Voss capital ships, then tried Voss a second time. Got both ships, but no unlock. :-\

I have fought Dawn between those, so I don't think that's true.  Did you defeat both capital ships in the same round?

I finally unlocked all of them.  I have to say the biggest helps were RC Wraith, Haka, and Visionary.  Environment and Villain deck control were key, and Savage Mana/Rampage made it easy to meet the conditions of the villains.  A big thank you to the forums for finding the triggers!

Hmmm … I just attempted this and failed. Legacy, Tachyon, Bunker, Wraith, and Tempest (none using variants) against Blade on Mars.

In the same game I unlocked GI Bunker and SST. (I'd previously unlocked RCW).

Legacy was incapacitated by redirecting an attack from a Remote Turret to himself using Lead From the Front. I'm guessing I needed to redirect damage from Baron Blade himself, not just any ol' villain card. hmph. I did not, however, figure out what I'd done wrong until I was writing this post.

Yep I accidentally had similar happen to me(Edit: don't remember which but it was probably the turret or an environment card that took out Legacy instead of BB). Baron Blade has to be the one dealing the blow to incap Legacy.   Typically having Lead from the Front out and having BB play Devious Disruption would be one of the quicker ways to have it happen.

Anyone have any ideas on the story that would lead to the Golem Unity variant, that might translate into things to do in the game to unlock her?  Since she's got Mr. Fixer's cap, maybe we'll have to wait for the Rook City expansion to allow Fixer to get incapacitated with Unity in the game or something.

Golem Unity is part of the Freedom Six, so it may not be unlockable until Shattered Timelines.

I was surprised that this thread was not yet revived to help discover how to unlock darkwatch fixer and expatriette. I like the aim power and I am interested in using fixer more now that they gave him a new big damage attack (new interpretation of crow bars).

I have just been playing with expat and fixer in rook city, hoping for a random circumstance to trigger. Unfortunately I predict fixer needs to be incapicitated by the operative in rook city and have the heros still win. Before I bang my head against the wall trying to force that circumstance I was hoping someone would confirm.

Similarly I suspect I need Dawn to incapicate Expat in a certain environment, perhaps insula.
