Hi, we had a situation come up in a recent game, and I wondered if there was an official ruling. We were having a rough game, and were down to only one active hero. One of the villians targeted the hero with the second lowest HP. Since there was only one hero left, there was not a hero available with the second lowest HP. Would the attack fizzle in this case, or would it hit the one active hero?

The attack would deal no damage.

I had always played that the attack would still hit, however I think officially the attack would fizzle since there is no 2nd hero with HP.

Ronway will be by I'm sure to give you a better answer

Edit: Ronway got in before I did!

Great! That's the way we played it, but wanted to make sure.

Thanks!

Thematically that doesn’t work for me. It’s like kicking a dead horse. There’s one hero still around, but I’ll zap the one that’s twitching on the ground instead.

I’m new here, so that is an official ruling?

The 'official ruling' would come under the cardinal rule for Sentinels, read the cards literally.

I agree that if there's only one hero in the game then there is no second-lowest hero to take the damage.  This would (IMO) be just like KNYFE's "Infiltrate and Obfuscate", which redirects damage to the villain target with the second-highest hp.  It's been officially ruled that if there is not a villain target with the second-highest hp (i.e. there's only one villain target in the game), then the redirection can't happen.

Yes it's official. If there is no valid target for an effect, the effect does nothing. Think of it like this, the villain has taken out all but one hero, some of those villains certainly seem like the type to start taking things less seriously if they have already gotten that far.
