I don't know about anyone else, but I'm going to need a lot of help remembering specific questions from specific episodes.  I have a candidate for "saddest," but the others are hard.  "Funniest" is hard because the jokes usually aren't closely tied to the episode contents.  "Most revealing" is hard because the revealing ones are the ones where C&A go off on huge tangents to the point where you don't even remember what the question was, plus often they'll skip something in the overview just because someone asked a question about it and they would have said the same stuff anyway.  I tend not to pay attention to fan theories.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Like they say in the episode, reading WalkingTarget's summaries on the wiki should give enough of a memory jog to know which bits of the episodes to relisten to make sure you got the specific details.

My "Worst Episode" nomination goes to tinysode 1. On one hand, I'm glad that they limited the nominations to just this year's episodes because I have way too many favorites from 2017, (not that I don't have favorites from this year as well). On the other hand, though there are a few episodes outside of 2018 that I feel are definitely deserving of Letters Page awards. *cough cosmic contest or mainstay stuntman blow by blow cough*.

I have some ideas, but I don't have time to go looking through every episode for them. I don't suppose someone could help me?

In the shipping episode, who asked the question that led to the "KNYFE has dlne it with Haka, Tempest, etc." list?

I also need all the info for the question (i think in the ObliVAeon Editor's Note) that basically just described in exact detail why the timeline split worked.

I haven't decided on one for the funniest, and I'll probably skip saddest.

I might be the only one who thinks this...

But Christopher and Adam have had some dumb ideas. It's okay, it's fine, everyone does, it's not a big deal. But I swear 90% of them are related to this podcast. <.< An awards show just seems like a bad idea to me. I mean, they've made it not entirely about them... but it's still half self-congratulating. And they even said no one asked for it.

Maybe I'm just grousing because I sure as hell don't have 200 hours, as they said, to refresh myself on episodes. I'll go try the wiki and see if that helps, but I'm not looking forward to an episode dedicated to this. :/

WalkingTarget’s summaries are great for facts, but for the most part they don’t cover the questions themselves.  When they do include the questions, they’re boiled down to the bare amount of information you need to understand the answer. Any jokes or flavor are almost always left out.  Incorrect fan theories do usually make it in, but going through over 50 episodes to find them is a lot, and I don’t remember many.

Anyone remember when the Cult of Gruum wrote in?  That was certainly one of my favorites.

Edit: Oh, man, I didn’t realize how limiting 2018 really is.  No Guise, no Southwest Sentinels, no Ambuscade.

Just for my question-writing convenience, is there a list anywhere of all the mission-reward heroes? The only ones I can remember names for off the top of my head are Seraph (obvs), Everyman and the Chronoist.

The closest is the Mission Deck listing: https://sentinelswiki.com/index.php?title=OblivAeon/MissionDeck

Heroes

  • Cold War
  • Citizen Storm
  • Arataki
  • Lucky Break
  • Seraph
  • Omni-Unity
  • Cursor
  • El Mejor Legado
  • The Everyman
  • The Chronoist

Villains

  • Hellion
  • The Red Menace

There's also a few people on Be the Gate who don't show up in the actual Mission Deck. There's a good-aligned Akash (though I'm guessing that's probably the Inversiverse one), Wind Walker, what seems to be a good-aligned Ermine, and a Sky-Scraper dressed like Tempest and wielding what seems to be lightning. (The others are Seraph, Lucky Break, and Cursor.) I dunno yet if they'll also be covered in the episode or not.

It might have been better billed as a Viewer’s Choice or Fan Favorite marking.  Billing it as ‘awards’ skews a bit towards self-aggrandizing, I felt.

I think, though, if the idea is to find out what listeners like and want more if, there are better ways to collect that data.

I think it’s more that on the Discord servers and Twitch people talking about what episodes they found best or most recommended or funniest or so on was already a semi-regular topic anyway, so I don’t see an issue with formalizing what people already did anyway. It also seems like a fun way to encourage viewer interaction and have some kind of “end of year” celebration thing.

On a lighter note: I checked with Christopher and he does consider the Be the Gate heroes not already in the Mission Deck to also be fair game.

On another note... Harpy changed her name to Pinion because they wanted a name that was less "bird" and more "magic?"

  • Harpy: a mythological creature with the wings and talons of a bird of prey and the head and body of a woman
  • Pinion: a type of feather

Interestingly "pinioning" means removing a bird's flight joint to remove their ability to fly, similar to declawing cats.

Just for clarity, per Meriam-Webster, “pinion” has three definitions:

Definition of pinion (Entry 2 of 3)

 noun (1)

1the terminal section of a bird’s wing including the carpus, metacarpus, and phalangesbroadly WING

2FEATHERQUILLalso FLIGHT FEATHERS

Definition of pinion (Entry 2 of 3)

transitive verb

1ato disable or restrain by binding the arms

bto bind fast SHACKLE

2to restrain (a bird) from flight especially by cutting off the pinion of one wing

Definition of pinion (Entry 3 of 3)

 noun (2)

1a gear with a small number of teeth designed to mesh with a larger wheel or rack

2the smaller of a pair or the smallest of a train of gear wheels

There are a variety of interpretations of how the name “Pinion” relates to her in that incarnation…

I'm glad they spoke a little bit about the passing of Stan Lee. You can tell how much of an influence he had on them by just looking at their game and characters.

There was no one else like Stan, and I don't think anyone will be able to ever take his place. At least not in our lifetime.

...yeaaaaah, I agree with those who thinks the self-awards are not a very tasteful idea. In that spirit, I think everybody should vote for The Food Podcast for every category.

I'm kind of disappointed that I never got answers to a couple of my OblivAeon follow up questions. I was wondering about a few story-meets-mechanics items:

  • If the heroes do nothing, OblivAeon flips through his booklet forms. Does this mean that the entity is getting weaker (though more dangerous) as it destroys timelines?
  • When Voss usurps OblivAeon's power, how character cards tells us that he "is now OblivAeon." Is this just for mechanics' sake? How much of OblivAeon's singular entity-ness does Voss inherit?

Those produce podcast episodes, but as of late there's generally been very little engagement with or discussion of said content of the podcast episodes after they come out. So I can't blame them for trying to encourage more of said engagement.

Also as I tried to point out but got ignored, I'll more bluntly say it seems kind of disingenuous at best to call the matter self-congratulatory when half the awards are actually about asking people to recognize the efforts of themselves and their fellow fans to ask interesting questions/produce interesting content of their own.

But when the other half finally asks, "What's your favorite thing we did?" that becomes self-laudatory.

Which, in many contexts isn't bad.  It's good to get positive feedback and learn what people like.  But there are better ways to do that than to give yourself awards based on criteria you set.  Going on a tangent--joking or not-- about turning it into an 'award-winning' podcast by giving themselves awards certainly didn't help me jump on board.  It sounded much like the guy from the MyPillow commercials, who founded and runs the National Sleep Foundation specifically so he can give the MyPillow an A+ rating.

I think a few people are digging in way too deep on what is just meant to be silly.   If you don’t like the idea then don’t participate in the submissions.  If they get a lack of submissions I see that as getting a point across more than any comments here will accomplish.

What Powerhound said.

Many of us have already spent time of our own free will talking about which episodes and questions we liked best on a number of occasions, so to me this idea just is formalizing conversations many of us have already have had. I was expecting to have fun inviting others into that existing conversation, not be reading a wall of hostility.

It'd be one thing if people were just going, "meh this isn't just my cup of tea", but to have people sound like they're actively offended by people talking about something that doesn't interest them personally sends the very uncomfortable message that you think those of us who do talk about those things are doing something wrong.

And I mean to be fair, this is a thing that crops up in many geek fandoms. The phrase/thought, "this isn't my cup of tea but I accept it's OK if you folks have fun with it" is something I wish people would pick up in general.

As one of the people doing the digging, I actually agree with this. I don’t think Christopher and Adam have an egotistical bone in their bodies, which is one of the things that makes this podcast so fun to listen to. Ultimately, I feel like this is meant in good fun, and the question-based awards demonstrate this.

I don’t think you’ve run into a “wall of hostility;” you’ve rather encountered a moderately phrased opinion that it seems kind of strange for Christopher and Adam to ask us to give them awards. Nobody here has said anything specifically opposing the idea of recognizing the best questions from the community. Heck, nobody has expressed opposition to the idea of a poll on what our favorite episodes were, in order to give C&A feedback. It’s the awards for podcast episodes specifically that rubs some of us the wrong way. C&A themselves even leaned pretty hard into the idea that the awards are self-aggrandizing.

Jeysie, you said that you were hoping for this thread to take a different direction. Instead of criticizing some of us for the topic of our opinions, why don’t you go ahead and start that conversation you wanted to have? What’s your favorite listener question from 2018?

Unfortunately, my favorite things that I think of right away happened in 2017. :stuck_out_tongue:

JE

If you feel saying that even awards meant to praise the fans should still be protested with fake nominations is a “moderate” view… or that giving protest nominations to a harmless thing meant for fun you could have easily just ignored is an appropriate “moderate” response, I’m not sure I’d want to deal with you when you’re being extreme.

The actual moderate opinion would have been “eh, I admit this isn’t my thing but I recognize other people find it fun so I’ll leave you to it”.

Since the nominations are “pick what your favorite episode in each category is” i.e. a poll of what your favorite episodes are according to each criterion, I admit I’m not seeing what the difference is.

Instead of criticizing me and Powerhound for giving criticism of folks stating your opinions in off-putting and alienating ways, why don’t you go ahead and give your opinion in a constructive, non-alienating way by saying what form you’d want to see instead for a poll of favorite episodes?

I mean, I didn’t criticize TakeWalker or Warlock in the same manner because TakeWalker gave various detente responses and Warlock had a reasonable point. So I’m certainly willing to hear your thoughts along the same lines.

Right now it’s a good chance that for me The Director’s letter from the Shipping Editor’s Note is funniest and the Cult of Gloom’s parting shot in the Iron Legacy episode is saddest, but I’ll have to do some research on the other two.

For the episodes themselves, Funniest Episode is probably the Shipping Editor’s Note, Storytelling Episode is a tossup between Xtremiverse and the Radio Play, Audio Production is a tossup between the Radio Play and Something Wicked.

Worst episode is hard… like, I think the Food Podcast was probably the content I liked least, but the actual production values of them managing to improv 100% in character for over an hour without a single break in character is something I have to give props to as a former theater geek. The Legal Advice episode maybe… it also was a little bit weaksauce in content and didn’t have the flawless improv aspect to make up for it.

No, I’d say it was a lot closer to hostile than anything else. You are definitely doing some revisionist history if you think that what you said came across as moderate phrased opposition. Stuff that Platinum and Take said was moderate opposition, where they questioned the use of award as the term and what have you. You’re just straight up advocating “I don’t like the awards, so everyone should be arses if they aren’t completely onboard too!” Its a goof that is called an award because its being announced during what is typically award season and to make it as over-the-top as possible, for what is basically a listener poll. Taking it so personally that it used a word you dont like and so we should trash the whole concept is just childish. And while you certainly walked it back a bit here, you can still get criticized for wording it so poorly initially.

Now then, favorite listener question? Undoubtedly my legendary reveal to the world in the Daybreak episode. Saddest? Cult of Gloom has that one on lock for the Iron Legacy question. The rest Im a little rusty on, but I’ll do a quick once over to remember.

Hello everybody,

I think the idea of asking for us listeners to give awards to podcast episodes is in poor taste. Seeing that I was not alone in my opinion, I made a facetious suggestion that I intended as a joke. I did not mean any insult to other podcast listeners (or C&A) by that, nor did I intend to be extreme; I intended to be silly. That backfired horribly, and I sincerely apologize to anyone offended.

Jeysie, I do want to note that, the way you came down on me so harshly and refused to acknowledge my attempt to defuse the issue, it took somebody else backing up your opinion for me to realize that I might have caused offense in the first place.

Anyway, that's all I have to say on the matter and I don't plan to engage with this particular subject again. What I am actually going to do is just not nominate or vote for anything. Those of you who want to have fun with this, go right ahead! I apologize, and I'm sorry for intruding on the favorite letter discussion one more time.

Saddest question is absolutely the Cult of Gloom's Iron Legacy knife-twisting.

You have got to be kidding me. Now I’m going to be actually harsh, if you’re now going to start trying to straight up victim-blame me.

All I did was politely state truthfully and sincerely that you were being hostile, with an equally polite explanation of why I saw it as hostile, along with a still-polite suggestion of how people could have reacted instead. In return you essentially denied that you did anything wrong, implied that I was simply being unreasonable, and tried to transparently deflect away from yourself to saying I’m the real person causing problems.

Nothing about that was me “being harsh” or you “defusing things”, it was you trying to wiggle out of dealing with criticism for your actions and treating me with complete disrespect and unwillingness to take me seriously.

And now even when someone comes along and backs me up, your reaction isn’t to say “Sorry Jeysie I guess you had a fair point”, but to pointedly apologize to everyone else but address me personally with an attempt to victim-blame me for your own free will choice to be disrespectful towards me in a way that you were not disrespectful to Powerhound or Taffyman despite them saying almost exactly the same things I did.

Especially when you consider that Taffyman came along and straight up yelled at you, so to have you sit here and go “Well, Jeysie, you were being too harsh and that’s why I didn’t listen” is… yeah. I don’t know what this double standard is where other people can say a thing and be listened to and respected for it but when I say literally the exact same things I’m suddenly given disrespectful dismissal and put under a microscope, but I don’t appreciate it, to put it mildly. It needs to not happen.

FWIW I meant what I said, though: If you or anyone else has ideas for how such a poll could be presented in a way people find more appealing, I'd be curious to hear it. I just like the idea of such a poll, so while I don't have an issue with the Awards framing, I'm not wed to it either.

Speaking only for myself (I don't think I'm alone in this, but I can't say for sure), the thing that rubs me the wrong way a bit is specifically that they're giving themselves something they're calling awards.

Like, do the poll, that's fine. Even call the categories for user-submitted content awards, I have no problem with that. But calling the whole-episode categories "awards", when they're the only ones eligible, is going to get some side-eyes.

A way to make it more palatable might be to call that part of it a survey. "Hey, we want to know what you thought about X, so that going forward, we have a better sense of what you want to see from us."

In general, I agree with the Trumpet of Doom. I would also add that I’m not enthused about the promise of an awards show podcast episode, in which C&A are not just the award creators, nominators (or at least determiners of eligibility), and recipients, but also the presenters as well.

OK, I guess my next question then to folks is: How would you dress up the poll flavor-wise to present on the episode in a fun way?

Since my own reasoning: I admit I'm on the side of TakeWalker's view: I feel like this was never intended as anything but a silly, goofy, flavorful way to present a poll, as strongly evidenced by their willingness to give themselves an "award" for worst episode.

So further train of thought: People seem to be OK with the half of the matter that is a poll of favorite episodes, but are against the half of the idea of flavoring it as an "award" specifically. So since no one has said: "Here is how I would present the poll results on an episode flavor-wise instead", I feel that's the next thing I'd like to try to coax out of people.

Honestly? I’m not sure I would try to flavor it up at all.

Granted, part of that is probably because I enjoy the perception of getting to see behind the curtain, see how the decisions are made. So if they just came at it from the angle of, “here’s the episodes y’all said you liked for thing X; let’s speculate on why y’all liked those episodes in particular, so that we can do more of what you liked,” and had that discussion on air, I’d probably be fine with that. That may not be a useful answer to the question you’re asking, but it’s mine.

It’s been a while since I thought of anything purely positive to say, but here goes. Though I nitpick the details of OblivAeon a bit, I mostly see the logic of how he works, and I fully believe that C&A’s work to make an ultimate destroyer entity that actually feels interesting, both as a character concept and in terms of actually fighting him, is the best job any creator has ever done. (MCU Thanos takes the silver medal. He’s a great character and the battle against him makes two awesome movies, but there’s enough about it that feels unsatisfying on a few levels that it doesn’t quite equal Blivs. Anti-Monitor gets the bronze I suppose.)

It’s weird that they waffle on the question of multiversal splitting within the sandwich bag; obviously everyone’s RPG campaign is a separate timeline branching from the start point of the sentinel comics universe just after OA falls.

Back to the negativity a bit, it annoys me a little that when you fight OA in the app, and you lose, “The multiverse is destroyed” - except you can try again. It’s much more sensible to say that every game where OA wins is a single timeline being destroyed, and the entire OblivAeon battle is the sum total of all such games. If a real world cartoon or comic or something ever happens, I would want it to acknowledge that fact in a slightly meta way.

Moving beyond Blivs, the comment about Xtremeverse Setback makes me really think that he’s a hilariously over-the-top walking disasters that’s mostly slapstick comedy, but involving literally billions of dollars of property damage.
