Apparently Adam has decided he likes "swaptober" better than "inktober" and wants to do gender swaps of the Sentinels folks:

https://twitter.com/GtGAdam/status/914956717619859457

I like how Fem!Bunker still has a buzzcut and Guy!Tachyon still has a ponytail.

I can’t request on twitter, but my votes are for ChronoRanger, La Capitan, and Ms. Fixer. Or possibly Black Fist.

I really liked Fem-AZ's look.

Random Thought: Am I the only one who sees Fem-Tyler as a military style Expat? Maybe it was the red-shift on my computer (it's late) but she looks soooo much like Expat it was almost weird for me.

And,yeah, Mrs. Fixer would be an amazing look

@TakeWalker: Wraith kind of reminds me of Casey Jones for some reason.

And yeah re: similarities to other characters, Adam has a style; Tachyon kind of has a similar facial structure to Argent Adept, too. Wraith looking a bit like Spite and Legacy being Mom!Beacon both make thematic sense, tho.

@Powerhound: Getting sneak peeks of people's RPG outfits would definitely be an interesting bonus.

Maybe that's what Visionary's RPG outfit looks like. Both her Unleashed and Tactics outfits are already less immodest, so I can bet her RPG outfit would be too. Plus I dig that high collar.

I like that progression myself. I usually don't fuss much about sexy comic book lady outfits, but it just never fit Visionary's personality for me. Maybe it kinda fit her Dark Vis version, but that's it.

Of all the things here, I really find that I like fem-Bunker's armor!  Not sure what about it is so appealing to me, but it's just got this look that screams "bad-ass mecha".  The cannon on the right gauntlet really pings my radar as well.

It's kind of interesting to me that just a simple gender swap kinda takes Setback and Expat from a "sweet ditzy guy and tough lady" dynamic to a sort of "ingenue and bad boy" dynamic.

Also yes, purple stubble is incredibly amusing. Expat's hair being purple on more than just the top of their head raises some... questions.

Also, over on Reddit, some folks are going "Now that they're gender-swapped, the fact that Setback got their powers when Kismet hexed them in retaliation for a breakup and Setback and Expat met when the latter accidentally shot the former, are both a little disturbing", and I'm like, "the fact that you only now find them a little disturbing says a bit about how we as a society view gender".

Kismet hexing Setback is typical woman scorned though, one of the oldest tropes in existence( It turns up in Gilgamesh, and the  Táin) so it's more accepted than the spear counterpart.

As for Expat shooting Setback, it's equally strange both ways

@TakeWalker: Citizen Anvil does look rather like a light-skinned Fanatic, I think.

Citizen Don's beard is definitely epic. I think it's actually blond like normal Dawn's, but just highlighted red by all the fire. I agree with the kilt-like comments; he kind of looks like some badass Scottish-Canadian lord here to wreck your noise.

Citizen Hammer looks pretty much like the textbook example of that sort of archetypal woman in stories that you meet at some wild party and is lots of crazy fun up until the point that she decides to kill you Yandere-style.

Sounds like a question for the Letters Page - I'm wondering if there's some big reason for not including him near his Nemesis in the production schedule (Wraith was the second full episode for crying out loud) other than just not wanting to lead off their podcast about super heroes with a super dark story about a serial killer.

Also it would have been weird to do Spite as the first villain.   I think based on their fictional history Legacy, Wraith, and Baron Blade needed to be the first three episodes.

Oh, agreed, but now it's weird (to me) that they never bothered circling back to him. Maybe there's just not much there - we already got a lot of his story in the Wraith and Gloomweaver episodes after all.

JE

FWIW, I think the list of villains we have left to get episodes is:

  • Biomancer
  • Bugbear
  • Greazer
  • Infinitor
  • Iron Legacy
  • Kaargra Warfang
  • Miss Information
  • Progeny
  • Spite
  • Voss

Infinitor and Cosmic are combined, and presumably it'll go Parse>Miss Info, Sky-Scraper>Kaargra and Tempest>Voss, so that leaves us 6 "stray" villains to cover (possibly 5; I don't know if they'll actually do a separate Iron Legacy ep).

And I think Parse, Sky, Cosmic, and Tempest are also the only heroes left to get episodes, so we're probably going to end up with a very villain-heavy month or two.

Greazer and Bugbear yeah I think could definitely get crammed into the same episode. Maybe even Spite too; I honestly think he probably doesn't have a whole lot of story that wasn't covered in Wraith or Gloom's eps.

Biomancer I'm unsure. It sounds like he actually has his hands and fleshchildren into quite a few things; it would depend on just how many things for me to judge how involved his ep would need to be.

For Biomancer, C&A did say early on that they though he only merited an interlude.  But that was before Interludes got canned, and also before Biomancer started a war with the Cult of Gloom, Princess Cool, and Arcanist Lupus, and before he enacted his plot to replace C&A with flesh children.  Also, they might have just been joking (because Biomancer is gross), or they might simply decide to still give him his own episode and just have it be a shorter one.

So I'm not sure how intentional this is, but Swap-Spite has cracking in the mask in a very similar place to where it looks like Tactics Glamour has cracks in their mask. Knowing Tactics Glamour is Miss Information from Letters Page, I'm very interested to know if this is coincidence, or from some twisted timeline where Aminia gets the Spite cocktail rather than Donovan.

That sounds like one of the lines I had the most fun writing as Lacuna, wherein there's some mental dialogue about Tyler Vance being both hot and taken.

As a character, she's also pretty close to his age, anyway (she's late 20s/early 30s).

Basically, "Character is evil and creepy but I find them hot for that" is a whole cluster of… stuff. The dissonance of being attracted to someone you know you shouldn't be, the whole weird interplay of being scared versus being aroused, domination themes, etc.

But "Character is taken/incompatibly oriented" is really just more of a simpler "sigh, life is so unfair" sort of thing.  Or as my favorite RL joke I've heard goes, "Men are like parking spaces; all the good ones are taken." It's pretty much 100% true, especially when you get to my age.

Admittedly kind of amusing in fiction, if a character ends up with a bunch of admirers and is really clueless/irritated/bewildered/indifferent to the fact. (Less funny IRL, though, as I can attest from listening to my happily married or gay male friends complain to me about very persistent women.)

You know, I don't think I like this one as much.

Maybe there's just too much Paige in him, but it feels so much less vibrant and unique compared to some of the others. Kind of the same vibe I got off of Expat. Just, yep, that's a male version of that character.

Maybe I'm just super biased since so many of my favorite heroes are the awesome women that their designs are just too ingrained for the swap to feel natural? But, I love Dawn's swap... hmmm.

JE
Jeysie
2017-10-17 17:47 UTC

I think it's because with Expat and KNYFE, their thing is basically ironically being gender swaps versions of very common hero archetypes that are usually male, and going with the various explorations of that switch in gender.

Whereas when you make them male, you essentially end up back with those original common hero archetypes, and it takes some of the fun out of them. Male Expat is basically the Punisher with purple hair, male KNYFE is basically just every 90s bar brawler type hero you could think of.

Whereas with Dawn, while "leader of an elite nation" (or what they see as an elite nation anyway) is also a rather common villain archetype, there's still enough variety within that archetype to work with. Male Dawn is going to still feel different from Magneto, for instance.

This is a great and interesting analysis. You make a fantastic point, whereas the original seems to avert the cliches, the swapped version play them straight.

I still like them though, male KNYFE seems like Hercules or Brave and Bold Aquaman. i can totally hear him shout "OUTRAGEOUS!" at every moment. Talk about the crazy stories, "That's when I punche dhim thgrough the wall… twice!"

Something to keep in mind any time anyone says something like, "He just draws pictures for a living, right?"  (Not that anyone here is saying anything like that.)

Adam probably released them in the size he is OK with for the internet (ie, not full size, already shrunk) so you can choose whatever looks best for the page.

I think its just a very cool thing that Adam did, and the wiki is a great place to put down what one of the Creators/The Creative Director thinks Gender Swaps would be in alternate Multiverses
