We all knew this discussion was coming. I've been waiting for a while for us to be able to talk about this. But now it's time. Maybe it's a little early? Not necessarily for us playtesters. But I didn't want to cut everyone else out of the discussion. I'm sure we've all got our own thoughts, regardless of what you may know, and what you may not know that you do not know, etc.

The fight of the century: the Freedom Five goes head to head with the Prime Wardens in the fight that will have every reader of Sentinel Comics glued to the pages. It is bound to happen. In a great big multiverse, there's a timeline somewhere in which these two teams lay a heavy smack-down on one another. We'll eventually be able to act out this fight in Sentinel Tactics, but for now...

Who comes out on top?

I'm putting metaphorical money on Team Freedom. I think they'd win because of how well they work together. They've spent years at each others' sides, getting to know what works best with their team. Sure, Prime Wardens work well together as a team, but I can't see them having the finely-tuned coordination that the Freedom Five have spent years mastering. The Freedom team has spent nearly their entire career together--they've always fought together, whereas Wardens (I assume) have been fighting solo for a while, or at least not with their team.

So it's the years of perfected teamwork that give the Freedom Five the victory to me.

Prime Wardens Is my call.

Legacy is the X-Factor in the matchup though. Depends on how long Haka can stall him while the rest of the team dismantles the rest of them.

I think Freedom Five wins this handily.  Captain Cosmic is the only wildcard for me on the Prime Wardens since I don't fully know how his powers work.  I think Wraith and Legacy trump a lot of the Prime Warden characters I know.

My money is on the Freedom Five. I believe the Prime Wardens have more raw power, but they don't have the finesse and experience. Haka does by himself, but not with the team.

Argent adept alone can manipulate the F5s heavy reliance on tech and gadgets. We see that dude ripping apart a huge spaceship single handedly. Fanatic can summon the end of freakin days for cryin out loud.

Take out the tech and they are not that scary.

If the F5 got the jump on them, and maybe got gear that couldn't be short circuited by Tempests lightning, they would have a chance because of Legacy.

No way they win straight up head to head though.

You know, if only there were a game where we could take all these heros and battle them against eachother in an area using their unique power sets.

Now that would be quite a popular game I bet. Too bad we don't have anything like it.

Speculation is that each core set will represent a given team; personally, I'm more excited to see Omintron X (XI?) than any of the teamed heroes, but I'm sure we'll see the Prime Wardens eventually.

I agree with the Prime Wardens, though I would put Fanatic and Haka on Legacy. I think Tempest and Captain Cosmic would have advange over the other 4 F5 members, and AA adds the team work that the other team has.

Based on deck composition I agree the Prime Wardens likely win.  Thematically I see the Freedom Five winning this battle.  As it stands to me Legacy is the main trump card.  You don't win against the team that has a hero who combines Captain America and Superman.  Not to mention the FF have been working as a team longer and more often then the PW.

I agree that the FF have much better team dynamics, but the Prime Wardens have soooo much power. I think the 3 variables to consider are: how well Bunker and Wraith have the fight planned out, how much Tachyon can do early before Tempest gets his storm powers going (those powers and Cosmics will mess her up bad), and how ridiculously OP Legacy is.

Though Legacy might be the most Superman-like of this game, I don't think that means we can compare him to the god-like levels of power that Superman has. Though I might be on the FF side, I don't doubt for a second that Legacy vs. Haka could go either way.

I disagree, in a true fight, not just a friendly competition, Lagacy beats Haka. I say this for one reason: we know Legacy can be pushed over the edge, and I don't think Haka will ever go that far.

My thoughts on matchups and strategy.

FV plan:

1.  Keep Tachyon free.  Nobody is safe when Tachyon is rolling.  If you can keep Tachyon clean she messes up everybody.

2.  Keep Tempest on the defensive.  He's the firepower of the Wardens, if he is free to nuke it is over.  Bunker can do this.

3.  AZ on Fanatic:  You don't fight Fanatic, you slow her down, frustrate her.  AZ can do that.  If Fanatic gets on Wraith, Bunker or Tachyon the FV is toast.

4.  Legacy has to push the agenda, don't get stalled in a strength vs. strength with Haka, go after someone like Tempest, Cosmic or Adept and make the Wardens panic.  Haka is a crusher, but he doesn't fly, avoid Haka and make it a 5v4.

5.  Wraith needs to keep someone occupied, Haka would be ideal, slow him, mess with him and don't get caught, and don't let him get to Bunker or AZ.

PWs Plan:

1.  1v1 Legacy:  Haka can tank Legacy, and if he can take himself and legacy out of the match the PWs should win.  Fanatic will have to switch onto Legacy at times, for short bursts until Haka can get back on him.

2.  Keep Tempest in the fight:  As long as Tempest is standing the Wardens will be insanely hard to beat.  Captain will be big in this, as will Fanatic

3.  Let Argent do his thing:  If Argent is free to sing the PWs can each take on 2 of the FV (Legacy Exception).

4.  Fanatic/Haka take out Bunker.  If Fanatic can switch with Haka to keep Legacy 1v1, the other of them can go after Bunker and if they get there destroy the suit.  When the Suit is gone Fanatic and Haka double on Legacy and it should be short work from there.

5.  Captain is your wild card.  If he can deal with an AZ or Tachyon the PWs will overcome a lot of the difficulty.

Projection:

it's all matchups and teamwork.  FV have a huge advantage in that category, mainly because the PWs need Fanatic to fight smart, and she's much more a see target, destroy target kind of lady.  I really think AZ/Fanatic decide the whole thing, if AZ can get under Fanatic's skin and get her to come after him (and not die horribly) the rest of the match-ups fall in line.  Wraith messes with Haka as Haka tries to catch Legacy, Bunker lays down cover fire messing up Argent and Tempest while Tachyon messes them up even more.  Hard enough to track a blur, harder to track it when it has insane cover fire.  Legacy vs. Captain Cosmic:  I think the Captain can hang with Legacy for a while, but Legacy is going to keep coming, and Captain won't last forever.

But then I wouldn't bet much on AZ against Fanatic, it's a gamble.

I think you nailed it other than put if I was the FV I would put AZ on Tempest. Tempest will mess with everyone except AZ, so if AZ can overpower him early, it's over with Tacky and Legs owning everyone else, by rushing hard. In the long fight, the PW win with just a greater power in general

Tempest would blow AZs suit sky high.

The F5 is so reliant on tech of all kinds and Tempest offers the biggest counter measure to all of that tech. You would need to double team tempest if you are the F5. The wardens don't nessesarily need to double team anyone as the F5 ringer is at least tankable with Haka.

the biggest challenge for wardens won't be Legacy, though he is am X factor. It's gonna be Tachyon. Wardens don't really have a great counter for her speed. Though I think cap cosmic could provide the best bet. But I'd take tach over Cosby 1v1.

fanactic could seal tachyon up though taking her out of the fight, buying time for Haka to tie up legacy, while focusing her efforts elsewhere, like Bunker.

I think Bunker can handle Tempest from range.  Tempest isn't that tough, he isn't deflecting bullets or tanking an omni-cannon blast.  If Bunker can stay away from the likes of Fanatic and Haka I suspect that suit could take a few lightning bolts and keep firing, though probably not in the best of shape.  Tempest isn't going to last long is a straight fire fight with that suit.

When Tempest is forced on the defensive you run a tag team with Tachyon surprising him.

That's my opinion on the FV's best bet.

Which is why I rank AZ/Fanatic so high in importance, if Fanatic goes after Bunker that suit is toast, and Tempest has no counter.

I would assume that Tachyon could take down Tempest almost immediately. Assuming her Lightning Reflexes are true to their name, he wouldn't be able to touch her, and there goes any dedicated healing the PWs might have had.

Fair enough, I suppose she'd have to stick to hit-and-run rather than actually force herself to dodge lightning, which sounds like it would require her to reach Pushing the Limits speeds, which could just end up killing her. Upon reflection, Tachyon is definitely not meant to be a brawler for any period lasting longer than a normal punch. She'd have to move away at that point or take a bolt, which I assume would fry her HUD goggles. And once she's without her goggles, she'd be having some serious problems.

I think a major factor is that the Prime wardens have access to the type of power that gets really bad when it goes out of control.

Look at Tempest- when he loses control over the weather, really bad stuff happens to everyone.  For Fanatic, her powers all take an immense personal toll on herself, and if she loses control then she can go over the edge into slef-immolation and sacrifice.  The Argent Adept can shake the earth and change the course of battles, but the brute force levels of power that a full-scale battle requires can leave him wrecked (we've seen the poor guy get impaled and crucified!).  Haka will survive, and outlast, but he can be stopped on a temporary basis.  He'll just be around to talk about it millenia afterwards.  Captain Cosmic is phenomenally powerful, but (without getting into spoilers) is not without weaknesses.  They also have forces that they keep in check- like Akash'bhuta and (we suspect) the Host.  So pulling out all the stops could lead to diverting some of the power that they use to keep the bad things away.

The F5 have less raw power, but they can push themselves a lot harder without having to worry about altering the rotation of the earth, changing global weather patterns, or breaking the seals and unleashing the armies of hell.

Fortunately, they would solve their differences with a nice cup of tea and Haka's homemade biscotti.

Cheap answer but I think it could go either way.  Depends on the situation, terrain, and whether the Freedom Five have any opportunity to plan.

The Prime Wardens could blindside and overpower the F5, but the F5 would be better at formulating a plan to outmaneuver and tactically drop the Prime Wardens.

I'd give the F5 the edge but not a huge one.  2 out of 3 odds they'd be able to adapt on the fly or stage a tactical withdrawl to plan, come back, and ultimately win.  1 out of 3 times the Wardens just overwhelm for the win.

So Prime Wardens/Freedom V/Dark Watch rumble?

Yeah I'd go Dark Watch.

Mr. Fixer points out to Setback that he's out of milk, and if Setback wants cereal for tomorrow's breakfast he needs to get milk, which is conveniently for sale across the street.

132 car crashes, 7 fire hydrant eruptions, a collapsed building, 2 alien invasions and a ton of friendly fire damage later an oblivious Setback returns with a leaking milk carton, and the Dark Watch are the undisputed champions of the world.

Of the two teams I think Prime Wardens probably takes it by sheer firepower, however it's tough to say.  I agree with earlier posters that F5 probably would use better teamwork and tactics so they might be able to overcome the initial disadvantage, but I think the fact that PW has two more heroes that can fly could present a significant challenge in terms of the FV keeping the matchups in their favor and could possibly allow them more freedom to choose who each fights against.

A couple of disclaimers about my thought process first:

1) I've never seen Captain Cosmic's deck, but I'm imagining him as a scaled-down Green Lantern (all DC heroes are way too Overly Powerful to be directly compared to SC heros).

2)  I'm imagining the hero fighting sytles as not being turned based but analogous to what they can do in a single turn, in terms of pacing and how many things they can do at once (the obvious exeption being Tachyon, even though she plays a lot of cards per turn would still probably fight faster IRL).  Meaning Wraith and Legacy are better at using two powers at once than others, and Bunker being the expert tactician and good at drawing cards is good at thinking ahead.  That's how I picture the card draw mechanic, as planning ahead, because they should be able to do almost anything at any given moment and not have to draw into it.

For PW strategy I would think:

Fanatic vs. Legacy - Can match flight and has enough attack/defense to keep Legacy focused on her to buy time for a double team.  Do not switch under any circumstances, even if she's losing someone else can jump in to help temporarily.  She doesn't have to win, just take the F5's biggest gun out of the fight.

Haka vs. Bunker - Rush him and don't let him get set up.  If Fright Train is a credible nemesis for Bunker, Haka should be too.  He could also probably stand up to Tempest's attacks but I don't think Tempest could handle his offense.

Tempest vs. Tachyon and helping against AZ - Lightning might be the only thing fast enough to get to Tachy and rain/snow/hail can mess with her footing to slow her down.  Against AZ can maybe help mitigate his ice attacks (although I'm not sure if his weather powers work this way) and I would think is tech-based suit could be vulnerable to lightning.  He has enough Area Of Effect attacks to help against two people at once.

AA - Support the others and help where needed.  He can obviously heal and protect the others and he has some ongoing and card destruction that would be useful against almost anyone.  He can also deal some damage, although his only damage that would work against AZ is 1 sonic.

CC/Wraith - This is my wild card spot since I don't know CC at all.  Also have you ever noticed in any multiple hero vs. villain fights in the DC universe Batman often gets overlooked by the villains and it never works out for them?  I think the same thing would happen with Wraith on a team of obviously powerful heroes but we all know Wraith always wrecks the villains in the end.  I'm assuming CC is fairly powerful and has some nifty constructs that can attack and defend against Wraith's attacks and at least buy time if not possibly win.

F5 Strategy:

Legacy and Tachyon would be the best at rapidly switching to help others so I would have them try to switch on to anyone who has a disadvantage.  As the only flyer I'd try to keep Legacy in the air as much as possible.

AZ:  Target AA since he can do very limited counterattack damage, although card destruction is a big concern.  If you can keep AA focused on himself instead of helping others the PWs lose a lot of team chemistry and the FV teamwork might prevail.  Can also physically slow down anyone such as CC, Haka, and Fanatic.

Wraith:  I think Wraith can hang with, if not neccessarily beat, anyone.  Therefore I would have her take on someone on the surface more powerful than her, namely Fanatic.  If she can keep Fanatic from shutting Legacy down she's definitely pulling her own weight.  Depending on Cosmic's strength he may also be a prime target to distract.  Again - wildcard.

Bunker:  Attack either Fanatic or CC, depending on who Wraith draws.  He has the projectile damage to reach those two flyers and the defense to withstand a lot of punishment, which would be needed against Fanatic.  I'd avoid the matchup with Haka since they seem too evenly matched.  He could send a few bullets Tempest's way too since he has the ability to attack multiple targets.

Legacy:  I would bum rush Haka and stay on him relentlessy unless someone needs help, then just fly away to give support and jump back in.  Haka can deal tremendous damage but Next Evolution would shut him down completely by becoming invulnerable to melee.  If you shut down Haka's offense the PWs lose a lot of firepower.  He could also probably close the distance on Tempest better than anyone so if Tachyon can't get to him first he might have to go there since Tempest has too many strong attacks to be left free.

Tachyon:  If she can get to him first Tempest would be a great target since he does a lot of damage but is relatively squishy, otherwise if he gets the drop on her and she can't get up close I'd avoid him like the plague.  Haka is really her only other target she can reliably reach since the rest can fly and I think she's fast enough to avoid his strikes and do enough damage to draw his attention.  Basically she would do anything that Legacy isn't, but I would keep both moving freely to help where needed.

In the end I think the PWs have more favorable matchups and can better dictate who goes against who so I give it to them, although it's really to dismiss the fact that the F5 is supposed to be a tactically brilliant team.  They could probably come up with something I missed.

I think it would be stupid for the FV to sick Legacy on Haka.  Haka has more HP and deals much more damage than Legacy.  I think these would be the battle plans:

FV:

Legacy: charge Tempest early and take him out of the fight.  Legacy is the least susceptible to Tempest's lightning, and if he got close he could make pretty short work of Tempest.  Eliminating Tempest would take out the only real ranges attacks the PW have, a huge advantage.  After taking out Tempest, Legacy should help any other FV member who's having trouble.

Wraih: Get under the radar and take out the Argent Adept.  Simple.  Then maybe help against Fanatic.

Tachyon and Absolute Zero: Frustrate Haka and Fanatic by freezing/speeding around them.  Keep them locked down until Legacy and Wraith can join the fight and overwhelm them.

Bunker: stay at a distance and pound Cosmic with everything he's got.  Cosmic's constructs might protect him for a little while, but a sustained barrage from Bunker will eventually drop him.  Don't let Haka or Tempest get close enough to strike.

PW:

Argent Adept: Power up all teammates who need it.  Speed up Haka and Fanatic so that they can reach the more elusive FV members and eliminate them.

Captain Cosmic: use constructs to protect the Argent Adept, and also to mess with Tachyon and Wraith.  Keep them from being effective, as neither can actually fight Haka or Fanatic one-on-one.

Fanatic:  take out Legacy, and neutralize the only FV flyer.  Simple.

Tempest: blast Bunker and Absolute Zero with lightning and mess up their tech.  Keep away from Legacy and Tachyon.

Haka: get Bunker early, then make use of he Aegent Adept's boosts to nail the Wraith of Legacy if either is still active.

Overall, I'd put my money on the FV, simply because their abilities will likely render Haka useless, especially of they can get the Adept early.

Prime Wardens would win against the Freedom Five barely if we're are talking about fighting with the decks. The PWs have powerful decks (assuming CC does too) and would crush the Freedom Five. If we talk about just a fight, one not controlled by hands and was a "real life" battle, the Prime Wardens would win. Hands down. Here's why:

  • Tempest has the ability to control weather. Which means that he will be able to control the environment they are battling in and stay out of harms way. Before the rest of the PWs appeared he could fry out Bunkers suit and Absolute Zeros. Which would immobilize them (Potentially killing Ryan Frost before he has a chance to do anything).
  • If Tacyhon did decide to go against Tempest, which she would since he's the "weakest" of the two inable to fly, he could act like an Electic eel and shock her to the point that it would fry out her hud goggles and leave her open to a lightning slash when she tried to punch him.
  • Tempest, if he created a thunderstorm, would probably have the ability to control where the lightning is headed, thus protecting Fanatic, Argent Adept, and Captain Cosmic as they fly around while making it difficult for Legacy to fly.
  • Captain Cosmic would probably be able to project out constructs and protect his teammates while he is flying around and dodging attacks. Mainly Tempest.
  • The Wraith would probably try to take out anyone on the ground, which leaves her with Haka and Tempest. No one would want to touch Haka except for Legacy, so she would go after Tempest. Tempest would probably be able to electricute her in about the same way he did with Tachyon.
  • Argent Adept could use Scherzo of Fire and Ice to block Absolute Zeros attacks, assuming he's not immobilized. When AZ is immobilized, then Argent Adept would have the ability to motivate his teammates and thus make them stronger.
  • This leaves Haka and Legacy to battle it out. Haka would win this fight because he has years of experience, brute force, and determination to take Legacy down.
  • When Legacy would try to fly away, Fanatic would push him  back towards Haka, probably very aggressively.
  • While the Freedom Five would work like a well oiled machine, the Prime Wardens would naturally work fluidly and be slightly chaotic in their attack. Cause though the Prime Wardens have just been formed, they know how to work independantly and wouldn't need a leader (like the Freedom Five) to help them make decisions.
  • If all else fells, Fanatic can End of Days, leaving her (and the Prime Wardens) the victor.

This is why I don't get involved. Things get messy. I'll just hide over here in the corner and let all of you take each other out…

Then it will be my turn.

Oh, yes. And a glorious day it will be…

Uh, I mean… I'll just be over here…

(This would be funnier if my emoticons were working… )

I just got a look at the Prime Warden promos, and I think it might just change everything.

Haka can now let someone else use one of his Haka cards (fanatic using haka of battle... that could hurt) and his power is to play a card,

Fanatic, personality is supposedly more centered, damages herself but plays a card and let's someone use a power

Tempest, can play an unholy amount of cards for damage (playing four cards a turn could be a turning point even with the subsequent 9 damage)

Captain Cosmic is still a wild card, but his power allows for a reaction of drawing or playing a card

Argent Adept plays a card and activates accompany

With this synergy of play card, play card, play card, use power, play card the Prime Wardens now look like a Blitzkrieg. If you can outlast them you might have it, but they have some potentialy overwhelming force to unleash on the first turn or two that can change the course of the fight right away

Late to the party here, but when considering who would win, I think it's important to determine what the victory conditions are. Some sort of Sentinels deck fight? A Tactics skirmish? A 'real life' fight? If so, to the death or knock out or what?

For a 'real life' fight, there are a lot of things we don't know. How often and how controllably can Tempest call lightning? How quickly will Bunker run out of ammo? How often does Tachyon need to slow down and eat? Who is or is not  willing to kill to win?

That being said, for a 'real life' fight, I think both sides have so much power that the winner will be whomever can ambush the other. If we take that out of the equation, imagining that the two groups stumble upon each other, somehow, in a wide open plain, perhaps, I'll give the edge to the FV for the sole reason that I expect Tachyon to race over to Tempest and level him before anyone else can do anything. After that it's five on four and short of Fanatic doing End of Days to gain a pyrrhic victory, I don't see the PWs holding out.

For a Tactics skirmish, I think almost by definition the sides will be pretty evenly matched.

The Freedom V in numbers are insane in Tactics.  We did a 5 on 5 to test it out and the FV compliment each other so well, I was using stun bolts to soften someone up for Tachyon, Using Legacy's interception to move players offensively and just the nature of their different styles.

They are going to have their work cut out for them to try and replicate the complimentary nature of the FV with the PW.

Can't wait to see them pull it off.
