Last night on the History Channel they had a show called "Ancient Ink." The first segement was dedicated to Ta Moko of the Maori. Here are some interesting facts about it:

  • It is disrepectful for any non-Maori to get a facial tattoo.
  • There are specific patterns for specific families.
  • The way it was done was to actaully carve scars into the face, let them heal, carve the scars over again, then fill them with pigments.
  • The Maori used to mummify the heads.
  • They stopped getting facial tattoos when explorers would come and decapitate the people so that they could bring the head home and show it off.
  • Recently, they have begun the practice again.

Here is a link to the show on youtube.

Given Haka's healing abilities, I wonder if he has to re-carve and re-ink his face every so often?

I would think that he would have to redo his facial tattoos every morning. When he first found out about his power, it was because his Ta Moko had disappeared overnight.

But didn't it reappear without him having done anything? I thought it came back after he had his arse kicked by that guy in his tribe and they left him for dead.

I don't think his bio ever really mentions if his Ta Moko reappeared or not. I had always inferred that it didn't.

Oh, no, you're right - I just dug out the manual and had a look. I must've just assumed that it did because of the card.
