Hey, Sentinels fans!

One thing that comic books have that I've always enjoyed is a "letters page" - a page or two at the back of the comic book where readers can write in to ask the creators questions. Adam and I were talking about this recently, and we've decided to launch something similar, but in our own way.

Rather than doing a written thing, we're going to do a podcast.

We find ourselves talking about the world and history of Sentinel Comics on a daily basis here in the office, and thought this might be a great way to bring that world to those of you out there who are interested. So, this is a "soft announcement" of our upcoming podcast: The Letters Page!

![The Letters Page - The Sentinel Comics Podcast|700x202](upload://5pXIhH8hxbRcwtj1ElatwRERkH5.jpeg "The Letters Page - The Sentinel Comics Podcast")

But what does any Letters Page require? Letters, of course! The format of this show will be very Q&A oriented, in that the bulk of it will be us reading e-mails sent in by Sentinels fans, and then answering your questions and talking about anything we're inspired to talk about, given that topic. We want to launch the podcast in a couple months, and that will give us time to start the process of reading your letters and recording our answers.

So! Want us to read and respond to your letter in The Letters Page? Use this handy form (thanks, Pydro!) to submit your letter! We'll be talking about Sentinel Comics things, not card games or tabletop games or anything like that - this is about the comic book stories and back stories that make up the world of Sentinel Comics. So make sure that your e-mails are about this history of the characters and what stories we have told, not "How do we beat Iron Legacy?" or "Who is the next big villain?" There's plenty of help with gameplay stuff and future-speculation right here on the forum!

Submit your questions! We look forward to reading your letters!

Ha! And I just saw Omnitron was the mic, nice touch!

I wonder if ending every sentence in this post with an exclamation point getting a 1:1 ratio is some sort of record!

It might save a little time if you answer this right now:

Will you be revealing new stuff that we shouldn't know yet, or only expanding on thigns we do?

If the former, there will be a lot of questions asking you to reveal info.

Really looking forward to this! Don't even know where to start on the questions, but will definitely think about it ASAP.

Questions:

  1. When do you need the letters by (for the first ep)?
  2. Timing of first ep?
  3. How will we get the episodes? (Will they just be posted here on the forums, available via iTunes, something else?)

Thanks for giving us this opportunity!

Glad I wasn't the only one who got that! :slightly_smiling_face:

Will you be revealing new stuff that we shouldn't know yet, or only expanding on thigns we do?

We could totally reveal past things that you don't know yet. We're unlikely to talk as much about the way things are moving forward - especially with Sentinel Tactics story stuff. But things that have happened in the "history" of Sentinel Comics are the best bet. The further "back" the questions go, the more likely they are to be answered, and expounded upon.

This podcast, at least at the beginning, is more interested in filling in the gaps in the history than in setting the stage for the future.

Given it's you answering the questions, how much can we trust the answers?

I mean, an entire podcazst of reading out questions, followed by someone screaming "Smoke bombs"! wouldn't be fun. Ok it would be fun, but only at first.

Russ has questions!

1. When do you need the letters by (for the first ep)?

Whenever! We want to start recording an episode or two a week within the next couple weeks - we're shooting for each episode to be about an hour long. Questions we get in the next couple weeks are more likely to show up in earlier episodes. But there's no deadline! We're going to be putting out a new episode once a week, and we intend on doing this for a long time. At least, we hope you all have enough interest for us to get to share that much!

2. Timing of first ep?

We would love to put out our first episode in, say, mid-late July? But we're not sure yet. Depends on how long it takes to build the website and such. Which brings us to...

3. How will we get the episodes? (Will they just be posted here on the forums, available via iTunes, something else?)

They will be at www.letterspagepodcast.com eventually... still working on that part. While Joel is working on website stuff, we're working on episode and recording stuff! We're also hoping to have them on iTunes and Stitcher. Are there other ways you want to get them? Let us know! We've never made a podcast before!

Thanks for your questions!

Question:

Should we word these like they are letters to a comic book, or just ask a question?

For Example:

Dear Legacy,

Did you ever get Grounded?  I got grounded for going to the playground when I was supposed to be doing homework.  Can you tell my Mom that exercise is important?

Thank you,

Geoff.

Or:

Hey Christopher, can you give us a story about Legacy getting in trouble when he was younger?

Hah, well, we probably won't do any radio plays or anything like that, but we would talk about what the character's been through and what has happened in their life that would inform that question, and then come up with what their answer would be in their words.

So, pretty much, yeah. Just don't expect professional voice-acting or anything like that out of us.

Ohh yeah a podcast is audio isn't it...I didn't think of that. Okay so for in-character replies you could just do it as though the character had been given the question and had passed on a written reply for you to read out :D.

Will have to try and think of some questions to ask all of the people :D.

If a question has multiple related parts and aren’t too long, one submission is fine. However, do not put multiple questions in one submission. Christopher wants to mark off the queations when answered, which will be much easy with separate submissions. Of course, this is only a guess.

Okay, I have a few questions:

1.  In the history of SotM, who is really the first modern hero (i.e. those who came after G.I. Bunker and G.I. Legacy)?  Is it Legacy himself, Black Fist (a.k.a. Mr. Fixer), or someone else?

2. You guys have made an awesome game and come up with a back story and an excellent comic.  Will we ever see just fun, possibly (non) canon fanfiction from Christopher, Adam, or Paul?

3. Will we see more villains in the same vein as those featured in the Vengence expansion?  Will those featured in the Vengence expansion get the original villain setup?

4. Which villain do you most regret creating either because they are too dark or silly?

5. Your heroes often have unique flaws that separate them from most heroes in comics which seem like gods among men.  What flaw either emotionally or physically would you most like to explore next?

6. Will we see the return of a team-up with Richard Launius ever again?

7. If you were ever given permission, which comic hero would you like to bring to the world of Sentinels and which version?

8.  Will you ever do a "cameo" ala Stan Lee where the creators are heroes in their own world (even though you guys are already "Citizens")?

9. Which hero's backstory would you most like to flesh out and turn into an animated movie?

10. Can we expect to see more Sentinels minis from GTG or are you going to just stick with tokens for future Tactics expansions?

11. What is the best criticism of the game design that you have heard that has helped shaped the game?

Okay, that was more than a few and there are more to ask, but these are off the top of my head.

OK, this might be a silly question, but where exactly does one find episodes of Christopher's Letters Page podcast? The URL letterspagepodcast.com is for a parked domain and Google searches lead to this thread or other podcasts on which Christopher has been interviewed. There's nothing on the GTG site map, either. I'd really like to listen to episodes that presumably exist somewhere, but somebody has done a great job hiding it.

One of the more surprising things I learned in the podcast is that Tachyon and Absolute Zero are close friends. I never really got that from other exposure to the lore. In fact, I figured Ryan would be one of the harder heroes to get along with. (“You’re out of line, Frost!”)

I wonder how Ryan and Meredith became such great friends, and what they do on their days off.

Any chance we could get either a subforum for the podcast or move further discussion to separate threads? Think it’d be cool to have a way to track discussion per episode (similar to threads on the weekly one-shots), especially if we’re getting deep into lore on specific characters and events.

For now, let's just use the "Sentinel Comics World Discussion" section for threads about Letters Page things, as they're entirely about Sentinel Comics World stuff. Right? Let me know if this seems like a terrible idea.

Does “Every game is canon” include the game where I stopped bothering Baron Blade so that AZ could repeatedly light himself on fire, or the games where all the heroes suicided in order to get an unlock? I’m not sure I want every game to be canon.

Can I just say that one thing I'd really like to see, going forward with the podcast, is that each episode include a suggestion from Christopher of one game setup that depicts an iconic comic issue related to the topic of that episode?

I know, we're getting all that in the world-guide for RPG, but it'd still be neat to get some game content out of the podcast, too. :)

Something I've been curious about is the referance to the different story-arcs and more specifically the books. Obviously there's the quotes at the bottom of each of the cards and it got me thinking if there is/was an actual comic book series in the universe, or if it's based on a plot-line that happens through the expansions of the games and the characters. and if there's a comic series, how would one get their hands on it?!

There is currently one issue of The Freedom Four, available on the GtG website.  There will be a comic coming with OblivAeon.  Other than that, the comics only exist as quotes and art on cards.  That said, Christopher and Adam have fully planned out the comics history.  You could pick any card in the game with attributed flavortext, and they could tell you what happened in that comic, which heroes and villains were in it, and where it fits in the publishing history of Sentinels Comics.  Most of what we know of the storyline has been pieced together from card art and quotes, character bios on the website and video game, Words of God from Christopher and Adam, and the ARC that lead up to OblivAeon (which featured a few comic covers and summaries)  The details have been pretty well collated by the wiki that Lynkfox manages, and of course we're now getting new info from the Letters Page.

All in all, Christopher and Adam have done an incredible job of telling a cohesive story in a non-linear format.  The only comparable example I know of is Magic: the Gathering, and it took them two decades to figure out how to do it right.

Hey, folks!

I am going to be out of town next Friday, so Adam and I are going to be recording the April 4th episode on this coming Monday. We didn't realize it in time, so we didn't announce it (episodes are still releasing on the same times and days), but as a result, we only have a (high) single digit number of questions on that episode's subject: NightMist! SO! Faithful forumites! Now is the time to use our question form and ask all the NightMist questions you have! We'll be recording Monday morning, so please get your questions in before then.

We can totally do the episode with just the questions we already have, but I'd hate to not give you fine folks a chance to have your voices heard. Also, I think the epidoes with lots of good questions are just better.

Thanks, heroes!

Idea for an interlude: I'd love to see Christopher and Adam break kayfabe on Sentinels Comics and talk more about the meta of how they came up with the idea for the multiverse, the origins of the characters within (which ones were created specifically for the Sentinel Comics verse, which were repurposed from earlier materials like tabletop games and other stories, etc), and how they built up this idea prior to producing the games within it.

For example, Christopher is openly a fan of Mutants and Masterminds...which characters started as PCs or NPCs within tabletop games they've run?

They should have a foley artist on call so they can have their impromptu Roleplaying sessions. I also can't wait till they start a podcast where they both just banter for an hour. Totally listen to that.

I am still waiting for Christopher and Adam to say " just kidding on the whole Nightmist is dead and has no future. Let's rewind to before we said that. . ." I am still waiting (Denial is the first stage.) (Also I needed a Just kidding they are not dead for my bingo card.)

I am so sad I missed out on the Nightmist ask question time. She is my favorite by far. So sad she is gone, but she will live on in my Sentinels RPG I am running. I really want to read a Faye Diamond comic book with 1920 feeling PI stories. I thought it'd be a fun project to try to turn the stories being told in each of these podcasts into something more organized and readable -- a reference companion for the podcast, if you will.  Unfortunately, that would require a reliable way to transcribe the audio into text so I can manipulate it and there isn't a free option I can find that does a useable job of it.  Since I'm definitely not going to type out a transcription of the podcast each week myself, that kills the project before it got started, which makes me sad. :(

@Spiff: Yeah, I originally tried it myself and reached the same conclusion.

WalkingTarget has been writing up excellent summaries on Reddit and the Wiki, though, even if it admittedly misses out on the humor a bit.

(Like "They get along well, even though they have different paths in magic.", when it was more like Adam roleplaying Nightmist acting like Argent was a hippie who needed to be told to "Take a shower and get a job". (To which Argent replied, "Excuse me, I do take a shower..." "...all right, I guess you do. But still, get a job."))

JE

True, but even that variant overlaps with an event Captain Cosmic was a part of. Basically Captain Cosmic's story is "looking for his brother with a side of having occasional side adventures presumably mostly with the Prime Wardens", while Infinitor's story seems to be "being crazy with a side of occasionally terrorizing some poor mortals before Cosmic gets him to gain some sanity and oppose OblivAeon".

And then Tactics and RPG are both Captain Cosmic finally being totally his own person. So yeah, I'm guessing the logic was that Infinitor just doesn't have very much lore that doesn't overlap completely with Captain Cosmic's lore.

Poor Nigel. We don't even really know much about what he looks like, let alone what he was like personality-wise before going crazy.

It could also be that the two's story is so intertwined that it's just better to talk about both of them at one time than try to divide them up into one episode each. That makes enough sense in my mind since a) they're brothers, b) they share a power source, and c) I'd hazard a guess that they spend alot of time fighting with/searching for/trying to help one another.

And it's not like they haven't done this before.  Omnitron and Omnitron-X aren't really the same person even if they come from the same place.  Neither are Visionary and The Dreamer.

Heh, sorry for the pile on. X3

I too want to hear all the things about Space Dad (and, er, Space Uncle?), since we don't really have a whole lot about Captain Cosmic as a person yet other than "cheerfully British". Also that he's a heroic lawyer. (Note to self: Ask what branch of law he's most trained in.)

Yeah, I think that is one of the coolest parts of the Letters Page, we get a lot more look into the personality of certain characters.

Sure, we knew a little about The Wraith, but I would never have guessed she fears crossing the line because she doesn't know if she'll be able to find her way back. I had never associated that with her before. Or AZ being the most philosophical of the Freedom Five and on and on. These are insights we just couldn't get any other way, and I love them

I think the truest tragedy of them talking about the Prime Warden members seperately is that we likely won't get much XTREEEEEEME content until the group episode. Seriously, I love the tongue-in-cheek nature of these promos.

Granted, even after their episodes there's a few characters where we still don't have much of a handle on their personalities. looks disappointedly at Nightmist and Argent Adept

True, but we still got something.

Argent is "like a man working on four master's degrees" that makes him harrowed, highly focused and yet distracted at the same time. He's insecure about what he does know, assuming others have more knowledge about what is going on because he still has so much to learn. He prefers resolving conflicts without fighting, and preserving life when possible in the case of that Portal Fiend egg.

It's all stuff I didn't know about him before that helps flesh him out.

Same sort of thing with Nightmist, especially since she was the "plucky daughter sidekick" of a detective for years, learning to rely on provable fact and denying magick and the arcane. I don't know if we knew that before. She's also immersed in her studies, but less frantically than Argent. She seems like she's confident in what she knows (taking on a student in Lillian) while still realizing how much bigger the world of magic is.

Man, I love these characters SO MUCH!

I know exactly what you mean. And i love the letters page, though I think my favorite episode so far was definately Haka. We got so much further into the character of the man than some other episodes, though that could be because his powers & background are simpler on the surface. Loved the whole "it's never the Haka show" that… Adam(i think) mentioned. Can't wait for the next letters page! ^.^

Then again I could be biased about the Haka episode they answered SoO many of my questions.

Haka does sem to be the moral compass of the Multiverse, doesn't he? I definitely have much more respect for him after his episode.

Something I am curious to know: why is the Letters Page so shy from brand names? In comparison other podcasts I listen to (eg Secret Cabal, Dice Tower) do not shy away from brand names at all.

Is this because of the 'type' of podcast? Letters Page deals with its own IP and should therefore tiptoe around other IPs, whereas the aforementioned podcasts deal with the review of IPs belonging to others.

Especially since it plays into the Sentinel Comics Publishing universe being its own thing. Can't have the same names in that version of our world; where's the fun in that?

Sentinels is hardly the only property to do this anyways: http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Yatter

Someone on Tumblr recently described the Letters Page as "two dudes talking about their OCs and making bad puns for an hour and a half" and I was like, "Yeah and people love to listen to it; Christopher and Adam are kinda getting to live every creator's dream right now as a result, aren't they?"

Hey, folks! I was just looking at the schedule for November, and I realized that Adam and I are going to have to be recording all day tomorrow and Friday. We leave next Tuesday morning to go to Philadelphia for PAX Unplugged, and then the week we get back is the week of Thanksgiving, which Adam is traveling during. So! Here's what we have to record before we leave:

  • Urban Settings: Megalopolis, Freedom Tower, Rook City, San Alonso, Maerynian Refuge, Mordengrad
  • Blood Magic: Blood Countess & the Court of Blood, Bugbear, Hermetic
  • Biomancer
  • Editor’s Note #12

Whoof! That's a lot of stuff.

Anyway! Please send us your questions on those things ASAP!

I already sent in some Megalopolis and Blood Magic questions (at least I hope the latter made it in, as I accidentally sent it through BaconReader's built-in browser instead of my usual browser), so I just gotta finish writing down my Biomancer thoughts. :D

Edit: And there goes that letter too... whee!

If it makes you feel better, I can write letters with a bunch of questions and then still realize I forgot something. (Like when you tell Twitch you were off writing letters with lots of questions about [x] and Twitch is like "Did you ask about [thing y] for [x]" and you're like "uh... well... I should have, oops".)

You can always ask follow-up questions! That what Editor's Notes are for!

TA

And we should still tag those followup questions with the character name, not "Editor's Note" or "Followup" or anything weird, right? I'm never sure if I should be going for the deck/character, or the episode it's going to be on, like with the Urban Settings...

Yeah, I felt a little confused, so I tagged my Megalopolis question as Megalopolis but labelled my Blood Magic questions as Blood Magic because my letter was mainly about blood magic as a general concept...

Yeah, just always tag your questions with what it's about. Baron Blade questions should be tagged "Baron Blade". Megalopolis questions should be tagged "Megalopolis". And so on and so forth.

Random question: If there was an editor's note style question where it was more about a topic about how it relates to multiple characters, is it better to ask individual questions for each hero, or group them together under with a tag under that topic?

I have a serious question about puns/one-liners and can't decide the best way to submit it.

If it can be broken into questions about individual characters and tagged that way, it would be best. Otherwise, "Other" is good.
