Dark Crystal, Firefly, etc

Ha! I feared that would come off inappropriately. Don't get me wrong - I love Dark Crystal! But It's a pretty, well, dark show, and I really love the lighter Muppet material, like the TV show, Labyrinth, and (some of) the Muppet movies. So yeah, Dark Crystal is probalby one of my least enjoyed Muppet shows, but that's like saying that Bushwhacked is my least enjoyed Firefly episode: I've still watched and enjoyed it many times!

Sorry to stay off topic, but Dark Crystal is one of my favorite films ever. Had to throw my 2 cents there. 

Which raises the question: can threads in the Playtesting sub-forum be split out of it? :P

Ooooh the Dark Crystal is one film I really like too! I have that really cool book, the World of the Dark Crystal, which goes into detail explaining all the world background and art and stuff - they came up with the world first, then wrote the story of the film around it. I think that's really cool :D. I also have the novelisation. And obviously, the DVD (and possibly the video still sitting around somewhere as well, not sure on that as it wasn't mine personally but more of a general "it belongs to everyone" thing).

At one point I could list off all the names of the ten urRu and Skeksis and their titles…not sure if I still can as I haven't tried for a while.

And apparently they can. lol.

Yeah, I was really hoping they would get the Dark Crystal sequel moving forward, again...

But honestly I would rather have Firefly back. 


Yeah, haven't read up on that one for maybe a couple of years now, but I'm certainly aware of it. I was a bit dubious about it, given that it seems like they wanted to get the Skeksis back in it again…not sure how they'd pull that off without totally messing with the whole setting, unless the urSkeks came back or something weird and messed around with the Crystal again. But then, they'd need another Great Conjunction for that and they only occur once every thousand years…

Never watched Firefly (but have heard it was good - just never got around to watching it), but am definitely something of a Scaper (though that said, I did get the boxset maybe two years ago and still haven't got around to watching it :O).

There was something not long ago that Tim Minnear was discussing possibilities of its return as a short run series, so not as to interfere with Castle and other cast obligations.

Yeah, I saw that! I tend not to get my hopes up, though. I’d rather just expect it isn’t going to happen than expect it and be let down.

And argue about whether things really are overpowered/underpowered, and how to fix them. Haven't gotten to START on that yet, though, because playtesting for Tactics hasn't STARTED YET. >:(

I personally love the Dark Crystal just for its visuals. The use of puppetry is amazing and even today puts to shame some terrible CG that modern movies produce. I'm looking at you, Green Lantern.

The CGI didn't hurt Green Lantern.

...the story (or lack of it) hurt Green Lantern.

The CGI wasn't an innocent victim, it was smelling foul too.

My thoughts are on the premise. "Let's find the biggest, baddest threat in the GL canon and throw the rookie up against it single-handly."

Got no problem with Parallax being introduced, but the fight with it is something that should have been led up to through a couple of movies first.

The credits scene was pretty awesome, though.

Yeah, agreed. DC really didn't learn from Marvel's success: Build the characters and get people to love them. You'll get to the global-threat eventually.

Green Lantern had some good moments, but it really had a lot of issues…

And their so-called "Man of Steel 2/SupermanBatman" movie is starting to sound more and more like "JLA".

Once again sorry for going off topic but Muppets and Firefly, something to make you smile, and another to make you cry. Put them togetehr, and you'll get something awesome.

My problem with GL was not the effects (which were quite decent I thought, though not the best I could hope for), nor even the story (which, again, was okay).  It was that they completely missed the point in characterization by having Ryan Reynolds be a self-absorbed, insecure jerk instead of a square-jawed, steadfast idealist.  He even flat-out says in the film that he is not "without fear", which is exactly the #1 qualification required of any Green Lantern.  It'd be like having a Batman that's totally unprepared and soft on criminals, or a Superman who angrily rejects his family and vocally sympathizes with America's enemies.  Hollywood simply cannot believe that moviegoing audiences will like a character who is morally pure and upright, unless that character is named Superman, and even then they're scared stiff that Joe Blow won't find him relatable enough.  They always have to try to pull This Loser Is You, and this was one property where that was the most inappropriate trope imaginable.

For what it's worth, I saw elements of the Emerald Dawn II storyline in there, with Jordan being near the end of his chances. Just missing the time in jail.

I disliked it for other reasons, which is a shame since Hal Jordan and Barry Allen are two of the few DC heroes I've every really enjoyed watching.

Incidentally, I also have absolutely all of the Dark Crystal soundtrack (the original soundtrack plus the version where the music is the same as in the film), so if anyone likes the music and wants some, let me know - I can send it to you over Skype or something :).
