So first off, who's heard of this wonderful little game? It's basically Calvinball made into a card game. And it's ridiculus.

You just take a bunch of index cards, have each player write and draw on a few of them, then shuffle the blanks and non-blanks into a deck. Once hands have been dealt out, each player takes turns drawing one card and playing one card. If the card says something, you do what it says. If you have a blank card, you can write on it, adding a new element to the game. When the deck runs out, the player with the best score wins. But winning is essentially a formality. The "scores" might end up being irratioinal numbers, in scientific notation, or nonsense( in one game I played, the winner beat everyone by pi + a piece of string points). The real object of the game is to make the game as fun as possible, as silly as possible, and as insane as possible. At the end, players decide which cards were the best ideas, and keep those cards in the deck for next time( some might say making the most good-enough-to-keep cards is the true victory).

I bring this up because there's a version of 1KBWC that people play over forums like TVTropes. One person acts as a GM, collecting cards from everybody, sending people their new cards, generally keeping track of what's going on, etc. The others play the game by posting their actions to the thread. It's no substitute for the real, face-to-face game, but I think it looks like fun and I'm willing to try starting a game here. I'll need at least three or (preferably )four other people to make this game work.

Here's how this is gonna go down:
SETUP

The first thing we need is cards for our deck! 1:2 is a good ratio of blanks to nonblanks. As for deck size... I wanna say 12 cards per player. So each player needs to contribute 8 cards to the deck.

To join, just respond to this saying you're interested. Then, send me your cards in a PM(Tinypic is your friend) and I'll add them to a deck! You don't need to make all 8 of them if you don't feel like it, since I'll be adding some cards in, too. Just send me at least 5.

A card needs a title, a picture, and a description of what it does. Each card should be a PNG that's either 300x400 or 400x300. Artistic talent not required; you're allowed to just use images from the internet if you prefer.

I'll PM everybody their starting hands once enough people have joined and submitted cards.

What am I allowed to make into a card? ANYTHING. Anything you want! There's cards that give or take away points from whoever they're played on (generally in increments of 100, no higher than 1000 points), cards that can add new rules or win conditions, and cards that do completely absurd stuff that isn't even useful but it's funny. Really, as long as the cards are fun, your'e doing it right. If your cards are just for making you win faster in the most straightforward way possible, you're doing it wrong. Let's make this crazy! Let's make this hilarious! Let's make this game AWESOME!

Who's with me?

GM'S NOTE: For those reading through this for the first time now, please keep in mind that some cards had their text altered after the game ended, and others might have been removed from the deck completely to save memory on my DropBox account. A second game is currently in the works, and watching that one will probably be less confusing. Not a whole lot has changed since this game ended( so far), so you ought to still get the general jist of what's happening, just don't be surprised if players don't always seem to be following exactly what the cards say.

Card Creation Guidelines:

No instant "I win" cards.

No cards that add or subtract more than 1000 points.

Entertaining cards are just as good as useful ones.

It is impossible for a card to be "too silly." In the past, people have made cards that allow people to eat other cards, make the target talk like a pirate, and even re-created cards from other games with no explanation for how they work within this game.

Each card should be a 400x300 or 300x400 png with a title, a picture, and a description of what it does.

Most cards can be played on a single player( including yourself). Some might be played on multilple people or the game as a whole. If the card has an ongoing effect( like giving someone a special ability or adding a new rule to the game), it stays in play and it's effect ends when the card goes away. If it's just a one-time thing( like drawing a card or losing some points) the card is discarded after use. Usually.

This game sounds like some weird kind of alternate, do-it-yourself version of Munchkin, lol.

I was once in a situation where I could almost have won a game by taking my trousers off. True story. Also hugging, arm wrestling, dancing, rapping... Obviously that kind of thing can't happen when you're playing via a forum, but still, join us Ameena!

I did think about it, but there are two things I'm not entirely sure of.

Firstly is that I may not have time. Well, I might do. I'm away this weekend and back on Sunday evening (this is a regular thing - my partner and I spend weekends at one of our houses, so we're both busy until the person staying has gone home).

Secondly is that I'm not entirely sure I fully understand the game - it's probably something I'd have to actually play to get the hang of. seeing a load more example cards would probably help. It does sound a bit like it could have components of those "dare" games that I can't stand, where a player "has to" do some kind of humiliating action or they're considered "rubbish" or "a wimp" or similar. I'm sure this isn't like that but the fact that the rules say "You can put on your card instructions for a player to do anything weird that you can think of" would seem to allow for it.

AL

A lot of that depends on who you play with. I'm not really fond of humiliation games, so I've always played it with an unspoken rule that you can make players do silly things, but nothing they're actually uncomfortable with. The object of the game is to make an enjoyable game, after all. As GM I reserve the right to leave out cards I feel are going too far.

I'd recomend taking a look at some of the game people had on TVTropes. That's what inspired me to try it myself.

I can definitely understand people not having time. I'm doing this now only because I'm on break next week.

Well, I'm normally online in the evenings (I usually check my forums and stuff, and then when my partner comes online we log into our current game of whatever we're in the progress of working our way through, which atm is Diablo III), and (more or less) all day on Mondays and Thursdays 'cause I'm off work on those days. This week was an exception 'cause I had the week off (hence my being online now when I'd normally be at work). I'm going out shortly, though.

Not having time is an understandable reason, but you really don't have to worry about having to do things you're uncomfortable with. Personally, my games are more about silliness and having fun than embarrassing people (the taking off my trousers example wasn't someone making a 'remove your trousers' card, but because the card in question gave more negative points to anybody wearing lilac trousers [one of my friends dislikes my fashion sense]). As Alex says, he'll be moderating, and even apart from all that there's very little embarrassing stuff you can do via the medium of text...

As for example cards, there are hundreds of scans on my deviantART (http://blue-hair.deviantart.com/gallery/?catpath=scraps), and there's also this lot from another group: http://ducttape.pbworks.com/f/1kbwcposter.png

Gameplay

(I should really be putting all these rules down at once, shouldn't I?)

On your turn, I send you a card and you play a card. Post the card you want to play. If you don't take your turn within 24 hours of recieving your card, you lose your chance and the next person may go.

At the end of each round, I give a recap of everybody's status in the game so far.

Endgame

When we use up all the cards or successfully break the game, the game ends. Player with the most points probably wins. Then we decide which cards were the best and which cards to leave out of the deck for next time.

I'll probably have a look at those example cards when I get home at some point - I'm at my partner's house now, just checking my forums while I wait for him to get home from work. It does sound like it could be kind of fun - like I said, it sounds a bit like a sort of DIY version of Munchkin, but with points instead of levels.

Depending on what people create, it can end up similar to Munchkin( I sometimes create "monster" cards that reward anyone who defeats them. I just give them HP and allow negative-point cards to be used as attacks). Of course, BEING a munchkin is something to avoid in 1KBWC.

I've always seen it as a bit like Fluxx or We Didn't Playtest This At All.

Whoa, have we found more players?! Cool! I had pretty much given up on getting a game started, but if people are still interested I can totally do this! I still have the file I was keeping the cards in, and I've been wanting to play this game again in some form. With the addition of Silverleaf and McBehrer, we'll have three players, the bare minimum we need to get started. Why don't you guys PM me your cards if you still want to play?

As BlueHairedMeerkat points out, you will be able to make additional cards during the game if you get a blank, so I'd prefer it if we didn't go much higher than 8 per player, but sending me more than 8 cards is by no means bad. Some people might want to submit less than 8( it would be nice if everyone contributed at least 5, though), or I might end up needing extra cards for something unexpected. So yeah, make as many as you like, the worst that could happen is some not being used.

PMs will be utilized just for handling stuff we can't let other players see, like when someone "draws" a card. This thread will be our "table," where players post images of the cards they play and I give recaps of the current game state. If you're curious what this is like, here's one they played on TVTropes that inspired me to try this out. I've never actually done an online game of 1KBWC, either, but it looks like fun!

Incidentally, does anyone know of a good way to simulate non-standard decks of cards? Like, something where you give a range of numbers and it creates a pool to select one number at random from, then removes that number from the pool?
I figure I can always just keep a list of all cards currently in the deck and use a regular random number generator to pull out cards one by one, but if someone knows of an easier method...

OK, everything seems to be in order! A quick recap of the gameplay:

  • Your turn begins when I send you a link to a card via PM.
  • During your turn, play a card by posting an image of it to the thread and doing what it says.
  • If a card requires you to do something, you must do it by your next turn.
  • If you do not play a card within 24 hours of your turn, you lose your chance and the next player gets their card.
  • At the end of the round, I post a recap of what happened and provide an update of the current game state.
  • If we run out of cards or (equally likey) completely break the game, it ends and the player with the most points wins, provided no cards have changed the win condition by then.
  • Submitted cards should be .pngs about 300×400 or 400×300.
  • I may create other rules during the game in response to new elements your cards add.
  • Make the game as fun as you can! That's what it's all about!

I'll send everyone their starting hands in about an hour, after I return from a doctor's appointment. Are you excited? I'm excited. See you soon!

As my turn begins, I invoke the INFERNAL PACT OF POWER.

I offer to each other player the ability to play an additional card every turn; the condition for this deal is that you do not play any detrimental cards (IE those with harmful effects or negative point scores) on me. If you agree, simply sign the document (in blood, preferably, but I won't hold you to it).

And since that's an 'at any time' type deal, I get to play a card still. I choose to learn magic.

So I draw three cards to attach to this one, and then end my turn :)

More puns, that's the ticket! I can't express how happy this makes me, it's great chance to let off some steam. And of course since Paul's probably not paying too much attention, this is surely the perfect platform for this kind of silliness. I really hope we can keep track of all these train puns and that the thread doesn't get completely derailed. I mean we have to draw a line somewhere and switch things around before this turns into a complete train wreck and everyone goes a bit loco. Mind you, I'm starting to get tunnel vision and I'm becoming obsessed with these puns - hopefully I'll be able to decouple myself from it and won't get any ideas above my station.

Recap Time!

BlueHairedMeerkat kicked off the game by offering a deal of infernal origin: An extra card play in exchange for not hitting him with any bad cards. Then, in a move I'm sure had nothing to do with his newfound demonic connections, began learning magic. His first three spells? An incantation to set someone's keyboard on fire, a curse that forces people to speak in Ubbi-Dubbi, and( most terrifying of all) the power to summon Ronway. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Mezike refused to sign any demonic pact, and did what any sane, godfearing magic user does on their first turn: Put down a land card. He then proceded to hide in a tree, and named it Steve.

McBehrer, on the other hand, saw no problem signing away his soul for an extra card play, using it to create a meetup between SATAN and some girl named Natasha, which predictably unleashed a plague upon the forum signatures. He also did something weird involving dinnerplates and trunks for a robot, getting him 66 points( HMM... SUSPICIOUSLY CLOSE TO ANOTHER NUMBER, I SEE).

Then it was Silverleaf's turn, who lightened the mood by making way too many puns about trains, and inviting the other players to do the same.

Status:

The deck has 34 cards remaining.

All players must make at least 1 train or smashing-related pun on their turns, or take a 500-point penalty. Each additional pun after the first is worth 100 points.

BlueHairedMeekat has 0 points

-Can cast a spell if he discards a card instead of playing one.

-Is holding an Infernal Pact of Power granting an extra card play to anyone who chooses to sign it and refrain from using negative cards on him.

Mezike has 0 points

McBehrer has 66 points

-Has signed the Infernal Pact of Power.

Silverleaf has 1700 points

Oh, and about that forum signature virus card: This is just a suggestion, but rather than fight the wording on the card it would be much more in the spirit of the game to just do it for now and create some kind of "antivirus" card. I know at least one of you has a blank in their hand!

The meerkat wizard begins a chant. It starts of quietly - well, have you seen a meerkat's vocal cords? - but it builds, louder and louder, until it is not just his voice chanting but the voice of the dead and the unborn, the voice of life and fire and fear, of salvation and damnation and eternity all ringing out as one, in a sound that somehow chills not just your bones but your soul, and makes you think very, very hard about whether life is worth living. From this chanting, finally, two words ring out, followed by silence. The words?

DAMMIT, RONWAY!

[spell; discarding a blank from my hand to cast it]

The voice scares even the plucky meerkat producing it, and the fearsome Ronway even moreso, but this is what he's been training for. Images begin to flash up in front of him. A robot in shorts:

[Seven points to me!]

Then that's gone, and the images flash up faster, first a devil, then a girl...

And the voice returns as the devil and the girl merge, and their voices join the cacaphony:

"ANNA... YOU ARE GRACE AND BEAUTY; YOU ARE DEATH AND NIGHT AND GLORY; YOU ARE LIKE ICE AND THE FIRE AT THE HEART OF THE SUN."

And then from the melded forms of the devil and the girl, a new image:

34 deer teeth tumble into a heap around the meerkat, and from his tree Mezike feels his mind opening, his thoughts involuntarily leaking out and streaming towards the meerkat.

More images; it's becoming harder to keep track of them all now, too many are floating past, but words are forming too...

And a voice, an echo this time, a quiet call that sends a shiver down McBehrer's spine: that's his voice.

"Also, important note regarding the nature of the card: the original text that I submitted it with specifically said that anyone who already had the virus as their signature before the card was played was exempt."

[And so I am exempt :D]

Then the noise dies, the colours fade, and what's left is just a meerkat and a pile of teeth.

[I make that 107 points to me, plus 34 deer teeth and a peek at Mezike's hand.]

Of course, we only have McBehrer's word that he has 66 dinner plates. It seems like too many for a domestic household and not enough for a restaurant - we need photographic evidence of this unusual quantity of prandial chinaware! Otherwise I claim that he has become carriaged away with his estimation. Then again, it's unusal that he didn't smash any of them for the extra points.

All of this frenetic cardplay is a signal to me to take some decisive action, and I have a smashing idea. From the safety of Steve I play the following:

I have a horrible feeling that this could backfire on me. I think it's worth the risk so that I am not left on the sidings even if the pace of this game could leave me shattered.

Recap Time!

BlueHairedMeerkat began the round with an ominous ritual that summoned Ronway from the æther. He helpfully pointed out that we had forgotten to follow a key rule last round, so we pulled out the previous three discarded cards and reapplied them, among them Omnitrunks and the Signature Virus card. This allowed Meerkat to restore his beloved signature to normal, as only those with the virus in the first place are allowed to change their signatures later. And this time, Ah, Satan Sees Natasha summoned Bill Cipher the Dream Demon( Man, Meerkat isn't even trying to hide how he's probably some sorta devil-consorting warlock cultist, huh?) to invade Mezike's mind and do what he does best.

Mezike, after having the very cards in his hand revealed to the sneaky Meerkat, was galvanized into a bout of shutting all information leaks and began REDACTING all cards the moment they were played, though as of now not even he knows what he just censored.

McBehrer decided to do something BIG this round, playing the game-changing [REDACTED]

Silverleaf smartly followed up with a never-before-seen-card, whose name is only now being relea[REDACTED]

Incidentally, I have to say that one of the things I'm most looking forward to in the upcoming playtesting is t[REDACTED]

Status:

The deck has 29 cards remaining.

All players must make at least 1 train or smashing-related pun on their turns, or take a 500-point penalty. Each additional pun after the first is worth 100 points.

BlueHairedMeekat has 107 points and 34 deer teeth( fun fact: I actually checked online to see how many teeth a deer has just to make that card!)

-Can cast a spell if he discards a card instead of playing one.

-Is holding an Infernal Pact of Power granting an extra card play to anyone who chooses to sign it and refrain from using negative cards on him.

Mezike has 600 points

-REDACTS every card played until his next turn, at which point he plays every card he REDACTED this way.

McBehrer has 266 points

-Has signed the Infernal Pact of Power.

Silverleaf has 2100 points

Well I could play a card, but what would be the point? Mezike would just redact it... I could just not play a card, maybe, but that would be poor conduct, and so bad. Hmmm, if only I had some kind of training that let me do something else with my turn...

OH WAIT :D

Yes, I'm de-siding to sidestep Mezike's cunning trap, by doing some magic instead of sitting station-ary. I discard Unloading to cast a spell of Silverleaf. Let's see you pun now...

Ah! But if you look at the wording on the card, you will notice that "casting a spell" is equivilent to "creating a copy of a spell [card] and playing it." So the act of spellcasting still causes a card to be played, and therefore your card DOES get REDACTED. Sorry, looks like that spell backfired! :D

You did, however, prevent a card from getting wasted, since spells are reusable and cards in your hand aren't (usually)

Rightio then, I have been authorised to lift the veil on previously top secret information about this game!

Clearly, the most humourous and fitting thing would be for Meerkat's Keyboard Kurse to backfire on it's owner, but then again he does still have that Hubba Bubba HoTep card and revenge is cruel. I am far too much of a gentleman to play such a card on a lady so that rules out Silverleaf and, I dunno, possibly everybody for all I know. Either way, Silverleaf is getting too far ahead on points so she must learn the reason why one never leaves a Quattro Stagioni on the kitchen table when the door is wide open...

McBehrer is far too quiet over there at the moment, so let's see how he copes in PANIC MODE when he suddenly finds himself completely out of options:

Which just leaves me to decide who shall suffer from a dysfunctional keyboard. Well, I like to live dangerously so have no problem incurring the wrath of a magically charged desert Mongoose, regardless of the added potential of shady Oligarchal connections. It just wouldn't make sense to play this card on anyone else but Meerkat - something has gone very wrong indeed when your own spells come back at you!

Conscious that I have now painted a big fat target on my back, this seems like the perfect time to show a little bit of elan. In fact, I think that elan will now accompany me in my tree, serenading me with sweet tunes on her Mandolin.

well that kind of completely undermines my basic understanding of how the game works. The rules don't say anything about playing cards in front of other people, just playing them and having their effects happen as written. The card doesn't say anything about playing it in front of a player, and the rules say that no addendums, additions, or changes can be made. So I guess I'm just really confused as to how the game is supposed to work, then.

AL
Alex

I guess I should've been more clear in my explanation. I'm sorry. Unless the card specifies who you can play it "on," the default rule is any one player can have the effects of the card applied to them, determined by the card player. Since the hedgehog card didn't say "play only on yourself," any player may be the target of that card.

As a consolation, I could send you an extra card?

Recap Time!

BlueHairedMeerkat thought he could sidestep the mass REDACTIONS by casting a spell instead of playing a card, but not even magic could escape Mezike’s frenzy of censorship, and the spell he cast was [REDACTED]

Mezike finally released all the cards he had REDACTED. He sent a kitteh to go and eat Silverleaf’s pizza, gave McBehrer a hedgehog to hold, and sent Meerkat’s own keyboard-immolating spell right back at him. Looking about nervously at all the people he’d just angered, he called over Elan the Bard in hopes of looking more innocent with the Order of the Stick’s most lovable party member on his side.

In between turns there was a bit of a rules kerfuffle regarding who can be the target of Give Me a Hedgehog and I'll Show You Why, so in an act of goodwill Mezike discarded his own hand as well. +1 Sportsmanship!

McBehrer noticed that even without her pizza, Silverleaf still had way too many points, so he cursed her with general shitey-ness.

Silverleaf decided that even without a super-high score, she could still make her hand even more ridiculously huge. She sent a zombie with balloons tied to it up to the top of the trash pile, where it found her a cat-creature with approximate knowledge of everything, and umm… Ronway, apparently.

Yep, that's what happened. I guess I ought to add that to the recap…

ALSO.

You'll notice that in the corner of Magical Girl, there is a number for HP. Quick thing about that number:

New Rule- Cards with HP

Some ongoing cards that represent characters or other living things may have HP.  HP will typically be in multiples of 100, like point cards, and can be changed like another player's score can. A player may "attack" a card with HP by playing any score-reducing card on it rather than a player. Its HP is lowered by the amount of points that card would remove, but any other effects are ignored if there's no obvious way to apply them to it. You can likewise "heal" an HP card using a positive-point card( can't go beyond starting HP). If a card's HP is 0 or lower, destroy it.

Let's see how this plays out!

Oh yeah. BlueHairedMeerkat, how does this card combo with that other one? I know in some versions of 1KBWC the point cards stay in front of you and you just add them all up at the end, but I was going with the version where scores are kept independently of what happens to the cards, and score-changing cards just get discarded after applying the effect. Carbon Dating seems to be designed for the other version. How should I handle this?

BlueHairedMeerkat's keboard had burst into flames, a victim of his own magic spell! He didn't panic, however, because any magician worth his pointy hat knows to take precautions against this sort of thing. A wave of the paw, and the enchantment was dismissed. Then he called forth a cute and spunky sidekick to assist him in his wizardry.

Mezike put two atoms out on a date, and made Silverleaf in charge. Let's hope nothing weird(er) happens, or she's gonna get the blame!

McBehrer, still sitting at a meager one-card hand, was forced to improvise. This benefitted everybody's score in no way whatsoever.

Not Elan( who is still just cheerfully playing songs in Mezike's tree, Steve), but the Bard, the one famous for his rhythmically flowing prose:

Whate'er the Meer-kat types in here must be

Five pairs of syl-lables with ac-cent on

The last—pentam-eter iamb-ic,  see?

McBehrer decided to skip his turn to build up a hand again, while Silverleaf called forth an ally of her own: Some sort of feline creature that can almost get anything right. It explained to her the intricacies of childbirth.

Since Elan was played before the card quadrupler, there is only one of him. However, I think that since only the EFFECTS are applied 4x, there is still just one card being played, with four targets. Two of these targets are you. Therefore, you may "redirect" that singular card, which I guess means reapplying all its effects as you see fit! If any of the card authors want to clarify on this, that'd be great. For now, let's go with this, though.
(Also, you don't need to put "ub" before silent "e"s in Ubbi Dubbi. Just the vowels that make sounds.)

Recap Time!

BlueHairedMeerkat turned up the heat on McBehrer with a fiery jinx that ruined his keyboard. Mezike turned up the insanity on a global level with some recursive engineering, which Meerkat’s magical girl enhanced to a whopping QUADRUPLE-THE-EFFECTS-ON-ALL-FUTURE-CARDS CARD! McBehrer was quadruply-confused at first, but soon got the hang of it and distracted Silverleaf and Mezike with an addictive puzzle game, twice each.

Okay.

Right, my turn! I plan to build up such a head of steam this turn that typing in iambic pentameter would get restrictive and annoying, so I'll take the -50. SO, I shall discard Attempted Murder to summon the game-ending monster that is Ronway:

So, I shall retrieve the top three cards of the discard pile and play them. First, I shall put down Wait, What?

That nets me four internets, but I really don't plan to stop there. Next up, the card I just discarded:

And I'm going to pile all of those on McBehrer (sorry McBehrer, I swear I'll even it out later). And, finally, my piece de resistance:

Again, all dropped on McBehrer, so he misses his next four turns (sorry). But am I done? Am I heck! Because now I get to use the effect of Summon Ronway THREE MORE TIMES :D

Four internets for me.

-2000 points for Silverleaf.

Another -1200 for Silverleaf, and she misses her next five turns (counting the one McBehrer already played).

And again! :D

In the interests of spreading the love, I shall give an internet to each of my compatriots as well as myself with this play.

-2000 to Mezike.

And another -1200, and a total of six turns missed (and yes, you could certainly Elan one of these onto me, but I'm still missing fewer turns than the rest of you, and having checked with Alex I can tell you that it's next turn I'd miss, not the rest of this one [not that that matters all that much...]).

Once more, with FEELING!

My internets. Mine.

Two to McBehrer, one to Silverleaf, one to Mezike.

Two to McBehrer, one to Mezike, one to Silverleaf.

Wizard training; it's really quite powerful :D

So, assuming no Elaning, I make that:

  • +50 points and 13 internets to me.
  • -4000 points, +1 internet and another five turns missed to Mezike and Silverleaf.
  • -4800 points, +1 internet and six turns missed to McBehrer.

And I can pull off this combo on every single one of my future turns...

Final Recap

BlueHairedMeerkat the wizard achieved ultimate power upon the completion of his seventh turn when he summoned Ronway one final time, or rather, four times in succession! And on each of those four appearances, he pulled out three cards and applied their effects four times, making the card play thrice-hexadecatupled! And I’m not even sure if that’s a real word! In a flurry of ancient magic and forgotten ongoing effects, every player but him lost at least 4000 points and FIVE turns. The cause? An attempted gathering of dark avians took a turn for the Hitchcockian and everybody was too busy playing some silly puzzle game to even notice the mere Meerkat magically manipulating his master machination!

But! Silverleaf will be pleased to know that the date she was supervising ended happily, and she got just enough compensation for it to tie with Mezike for second place.

Awesome game, everyone!

Oh, I'm definitely doing this again if I can get together enough people. Probably gonna be away for a bit (seeing relatives and etc. for Christmas), but until then, there are two meantime-type things.

The first is, who here is interested in playing a new game? I'm totally up for it, either as the GM again or as a player if someone else wants to try running the game.

The second thing is the traditional 1000 Blank White Cards epilogue, where we discuss what we all thought of the cards we saw. What cards did you love? What cards weren't really that fun? Those less-than-fun cards will not be carried over to the next game like the rest of them will.

I would like to play, unfortunately I won't be able to break out my mad stick figure paint skills because I'm on a Chromebook until my real computer gets fixed (possibly in an alternate timeline) and there doesn't seem to be a paint program that isn't either dumb or refuses to save in a decent format.

Grr.

I really liked a lot of the cards:

Elan (who doesn't like him?)

Attempted Murder (still has me smiling)

Beginner's Spellbook

Ah, Satan sees Natasha:  Palindromes are always winners.  Always.

I'm much less a fan of cards that get complicated without a way of getting rid of them.  I'm cool with difficult and obnoxious effects, just give people a way to get out of it if they want.

I feel like maybe The Curse of Being Generally Shite is a little too harsh. Can't have a positive score for the rest of the game unless something destroys it? We only have two cards that allow you to remove other cards from play( not counting the Spellbook) both of them cards I added in during the game using discarded blanks. If it weren't an ongoing effect it wouldn't be so bad, but a card that sets your score to 0 and keeps it there indefinitely is just kicking someone when they've already lost everything. Anyone mind if I leave that one out in future games?

I was worried that I'd made the Infernal Pact too open-ended, but I was glad to see it work well and not get abused. And if it does get abused, the GM can always veto the proposal. The Pact did exactly what I wanted it to, and even contributed to Meerkat's win( he might've still won without the protection from McBehrer it granted, but not as quickly for sure)

I'm also glad the Beginner's Spellbook generated spells that were neither useless nor overpowered( well, on their own, anyway.)

All the speech-impeding cards were pretty entertaining. I'd like to complement Meerkat on his elegant posts in iambic pentameter. Let's just hope nobody is unlucky enough to have more than one of those sorts of cards played on them at a time.

Games I've played tend to have more card destruction, hence the Curse of Being Generally Shite, so go ahead and remove it.

I like most of the cards, (particularly the Spellbook), though I'm always wary of things like Forest, or Wait, What?, or The Only Way is Ronway (sorry Ronway) that don't actually do anything... I'd also possibly remove Carbon Dating, since that card's effect got a bit awkward in a game with different rules. I'd also call for a removal of Ah, Satan Sees Natasha if Anna's not playing :P

Wheee!

Sorry I was a little absent toward the end there, I've been pretty hectic with a change of employment and some other RL distractions. That was fun, and making the cards was as much a pleasure as the rest of it. Definitely up for another game, would be fun to have a bigger crowd onboard although I don't know what is considered practical for this game.

In review I guess I should start by picking over my own cards. The ones that I liked for their effects as much as the fun of them were "Dammit, Ronway!", "Recursive Engineering", and "Redacted". Each of them is also a forum in-joke, which is kind of fitting. "Wait, what" is probably a one trick pony so I'm ambivalent about it. I'd be happy to toss the "RaRaRa!" card cos I don't see why it would ever be played and it's a bit clunky.

Some cards that didn't come out: "Son Jaliscience" I think could be funny although might wear thin after one game. "Citizen Fudge" - oh, it's a shame that one didn't come up as it was my favourite one to make, but the game effect is weak so it might just sit in someone's hand. "Flock of Seagulls" and "Flip Flop" were late additions and I think they could be interesting when they come into play - but the rest of mine can safely be ditched.

As for other people's cards, I liked the spell book but it can be harsh. I don't know if maybe it should work as one-shots instead, but then I guess we could have written a bunch of blank cards that would have made it go away if we were being more gamey about things. The train puns got a bit samey post after post so might work better as a one shot - I liked that it was another forum in joke, but it's the kind of thing that is better when it is natural rather than forced. Elan was good although I didn't want to part with him! The mess-up-the-way-you-talk cards were great too. The Natasha card is a little specific, i'm not sure if it would work again. Dead rise was good, as was the Infernal Pact (although the way Meerkat played it was good enough to outright be a card in it's own right).

The only one that I really wasn't sure about was the signature curse thing. Nobody really seemed to be comfortable with it, so I dunno, cutting into personal space a little or something. Like if you were playing in RL and put in a card saying 'Wear your pants on your head' or something and nobody would really take it seriously. Sorry man. Still, we made something fun with it in the game so it's all cool.

Oh, and I now also have a personal attachment to Friend Tree Steve. He may not have done much but he was always there for me, during the high times and the low. The card I was most paranoid would come out was something that dispelled magic cards which would then be taken too literally. Fortunately, he made it through to the end, so I will happily rest in my tree blowing raspberries at Meerkat and his ultra game breaking combo magic skillz.

So you're Happy with your Tree Friend?* XD

Yeah, I wasn't sure whether to include the forum signature virus card in the deck when I was assembling it because signatures are kinda personal and making someone change one felt like it could be crossing the line. In the end, I just decided to keep it in and see how people reacted. Silverleaf's reaction was amusing and Meerkat's solution to it was clever, but I agree, I don't think we need to keep it.

That Spellbook card went through a whole bunch of iterations, and I wasn't sure how to get a good balance of usefulness with restraint. I think at one point the book made you pick a spell at random and hope it was the one you wanted to cast, but that didn't seem good enough. Plus the good-ness of the card depends heavily on what spells you actually get.

I am, of course, going to keep the cards that didn't get used yet.

*I don't really like Happy Tree Friends, but I had to make that joke.

I'd love to spectate the next game as well.  I'm afraid I don't have the time or desire to actually play.

I'll be sitting this one out methinks, but please feel free to use the rest of my cards.

Did anyone else want to try GMing this time? I guess it's easiest if I continue doing it since I've got all the files and I don't mind it, but if another is interested I'll gladly be a player this time around.

That was very silly and fun, and I'm definitely up for another game.

I'll have a think about which cards I liked and which I didn't when I'm a bit more awake.

Was just gonna throw my hat into the game when I got an assignment from hell. Oh well, spectator it is. I might jump in the next one.

I'm in, if it is cool that I can't make visual images of cards.

I have a chromebook I'm stuck using right now, and I haven't found an app that I can make cards on.  I could send text, but not images.

Oh, I see. Yeah, I think we can make this work. I could even just add pictures myself if you tell me what's on the card.

Also, it's worth mentioning that since this is the second game and I already have a bunch of cards we can use, I only need four cards from each person who wants to join. You can make more if you want, of course.

Well I would like to amend one or two of mine and send in again if that's okay. I have some ideas for tuning one or two of the first batch, so please ditch the current set as a whole!

Awesome! So if I'm not mistaken we've already found five willing players!

  1. Ronway
  2. Phantaskippy
  3. Silverleaf
  4. Mezike
  5. BlueHairedMeerkat

That's not the limit, of course. More are welcome to join. As long as there're less than nine people I think I can handle it.

Back to the subject of the cards, I think maybe I'll make the Beginner's Spellbook require 2 discarded cards to cast spells rather than 1. That way you can't have infinite loops as long as you're only drawing 1 card per turn, so you'll have to really think about whether casting the spell is worth reducing your hand size by 1 card. This works out nicely now that there's a "skip your turn to draw 2 more cards" rule; it's like preparing a Vancian spell!

Also, I suggest that [REDACTED] have an added rule that while it's in play, each player MUST play at least one card on their turn if able. I really like that card, and I don't want to see the players just being boring and skipping their turns when it comes out.

Mezike, how do you make your cards? I have an idea which needs to look like a Sentinels card...

EDIT: Oh and Alex, you can probably ditch Wizardly Undergarments; I created that card assuming it would be in my hand rather than shuffled into my deck, and without the Spellbook it would be rather useless...

I don't know, last game if Silverleaf had put them into play before she lost all those turns, the game might've played out differently. (She got that card a little before then)

PM me and I'll sen you some files. If you cannot run the files then I can set the card out for you (I'll sign the super secret pact of super secrecy first of course)
