Diablo 3

Is anyone getting it? What class(es) are you considering playing, etc?

You know, I kind of refuse to buy mainstream games that do not come out on steam. It is not a political stance, I’m just lazy and like having everything in one place. Therefore I have not played mass effect 3 for example.

Diablo 3 is going to be my first exception to the rule in a while, I might even get a boxed copy, something I have not done for at least a couple of years.

I’ll get it (for free) because of the WoW annual pass, although I’m not a fanatical Diablo fan. There’s only so much button mashing I can do before my attention wanders.

I generally don’t buy games new because they’re stupid expensive. (I don’t buy used either - just wait for sales.) However, I’ve made the exception for D3. I’m completely stumped as to what I’ll be playing in D3 though since I used to main a whirlwind druid.

I’m still deciding on whether or not I should purchase it after spending so much money on a recent Math Trade, purchasing Mage Knight, and the Infernal Relics Kickstarter. If I did I would probably play Monk. Something about punching an enemy and having it explode a couple seconds later is alluring.

I also don’t generally purchase most video games new, but I make an exception for just about anything Blizzard makes. I just came from an hour long lunch discussion on SC2, and while I finally quit WoW, I expect I’ll play again for a few months when Mist of Pandaera hits. For D3 I’m most interested in Witch Doctor, but Barbarian is a close second, with Monk as a very close 3rd. I think the Witch Doctor sounds “coolest” to me, but in WoW, I was always the tank, so the Barbarian seems most like what I’m used to.

I’m considering the Barb, but in D2 he was kinda vanilla as far as play style went. I’m probably just going to play all of them for a few levels and see what feels right.

If you go on the D3 website, they’ve got a skill calculator for the classes up. I found Barb looked like it had a cool, cohesive, crit based spec I could put together, but I think I’m looking forward to either Monk or Demon Hunter more. Something about dual-wielding ranged weapons is inherently awesome, don’t you think?

I’m getting it and most likely going Wiz as main, I always play casters. I’ll probably hit all the classes for 5 levels or so, but that’s almost assuredly going to be what I end up with.

When it goes live, I’ll be trying to register a character named “ThisDoctor” as soon as possible.

I played the open beta weekend and tried out the Barbarian.
The Barb is utterly badass - it punches like a shotgun, with enemies being blasted away in pieces, all that was missing was a KA-CHUNK as it realoded between each swing
The game is really fun and lacks the nasty complicated trees from D2.

Tried a little Demon Hunter, and it was cool being a human-machine-gun.
Much cooler when I realized holding SHIFT locks you in place so you don’t miss-click and sprint at an enemy that you should be hosing down with crossbow fire.

Good game, can’t wait for its release, I have next Wednesday booked off work to get some quality time with it

I actually really liked the skill trees, although it may have been some sorta Pavlovian conditioning thing. Does it feel empty without them?

It really doesn’t feel empty.
You spend the early game unlocking your skills and figuring out how they work and which you like most.
You eventually have:
A pile of “Primary” skills (left click)
A pile of “Secondary” skills (right click)
A few “cooldown” skills (number keys)
A few “passive” skills (always active)

The big modifier is that every skill has about half a dozen runes. You can select one at a time and each rune changes the way the skill works.
Example: One of the early Barbie skills is a massive smash that hits everything adjacent to you. The first rune you get for it also makes it trigger a cone attack. The second rune you get makes it put a ‘bleed’ on anything it hits instead.

There’s a lot there and you can spend time experimenting and switching without realizing your characters is ‘wrong’ and having to restart from scratch

I think my favorite part of the game was leveling and going “Hrm, I wonder what this new skill does.” Trying it out then going, “Well, if I use this skill and change my passive and use a different skill for another slot it’ll work” The fact that they pace out when you get rune stones means it’s fairly simple to test out new skills slowly. I do feel bad for the people who had gimmick builds that can’t be made until level 50-something like the silly “All Ice All The Time” Wizard build someone built for silliness.

I imagine it’ll be awful, but I’d like to try out as close as I can get to an “All Ice Dogs All The Time” build.

I’m going for Torchlight 2 instead. I like the cheerful atmosphere of TL better (never was that much of a fan of the Diablo series in that respect), and I find the always-online thing and the real money auction house of D3 a bit off-putting. In addition, TL2 is a lot cheaper ($20), and I like the fact that it supports mods.

I was thinking of playing a wizard. Then again, I really like the Demonhunter too.

I liked the first TL a lot, but a large part of that was because of the art design. I’m considerably less impressed and actually pretty disappointed with TL2’s art changes.

I played a pretty decent amount of Torchlight, but eventually it just started feeling really same-y.

I played very little of Torchlight, because it started to feel very same-y.

I love the Diablo series, I have 1+2 and the expansions but Diablo 3… for some reason the always on net connection thing is bugging me way more than it should, I think I’m to give it a miss.

Oh, I definitely agree, but from what I’ve heard so far, TL2 is a significant improvement over the first one in that respect.
Still, if I really loved the genre (I don’t, I find it mildly entertaining), I would have a hard time saying no to either D3 or TL2. From what I’ve seen so far, the actual game in D3 is super excellent.

I haven’t been able to play yet because I have to work (blah), but feel free to add WriterRyan#1782 as well. However, I’ll probably be playing through my first time solo because I want to be able to take the time to enjoy the story, so if I’m still in Normal tier and don’t accept game invites or whatever, don’t be offended.

Same here.

I played as much or more single-player D2 as I did online. The fact that my single-player game will no longer have a pause function (pizza shows up during boss fight = death?!), and that my SINGLE PLAYER game will log me out for inactivity are both major turn-offs.

The fact that I usually play games on my laptop while travelling (spotty internet connections) means that diablo 3 will be a miss for me.

Also, the real-money auction house thing just rubs me the wrong way. Not sure why, but it just…annoys me somehow.

This may seem like a odd question, but how exactly does Diablo 3 play? From the looks of it it isn’t a MMO, so no monthly fee right? I haven’t played any other Diablo games so I don’t really know anything about it, other than it is an RPG made by Blizzard, which made me think it would be an MMO with a fee, but after looking at it upon its release I didn’t see anything referencing to it so I just wanted to make sure on here and I may be tempted to purchase it aswell.

Adam, don’t be playing it too much or else your art might start taking a turn to fantasy type heroes, as cool as that may be, I don’t think too many people would enjoy it as much as super heroes.

Want to play D3 soooooo bad. Not in the gaming budget for a few weeks. The good news is when I finally get to play you guys will have a bunch of gear you can give me right?

It’s a fast paced ‘clicky’ game where you use your mouse mostly and click to move or attack.
It’s a fairly normal PC game, so no subscription. It’s not an MMo, but allows 4 people to group up for multiplayer antics.

I see, thank you Civi. Now I shall sit here and ponder if I will be purchasing this game or not. Hmm… When in doubt, whip a coin out. I strongly believe when torn between two decisions that a coin toss is the only true way to solve the problem. Sadly no change nearby and i’ll probably forget about it until later while at work, and I usually have plenty of coins to toss, just as long as I don’t lose them and make sure they get back in the drawer… Oh! And nobody decides they want to watch the cameras that night and see me doing it.

What kind of a gamer are you? Where’s your special even/odd die for binary choices?

It’s not like I carry a die with me everywhere I go, although I do just have my dice bag sitting right next to me, so I guess I could roll one of them. I really like flipping coins though, plus there are plenty of good games that involve quarters, I just can’t think of them right now. Not to mention my bad luck with rolls in important situations.

Party Member: So who is the sneakiest to get up next to the guard to pick pocket him and steal the key to the royal chamber of the royal family inside the royal dungeon?
Me: I’m sure I can handle this. Rolls d20, lands on 1
DM: You somehow manage to step on the one royal twig inside this deep dark royal dungeon with your such high stealth rank where you only had to roll a two or higher to pass that not only do you alert the guard, the entire off duty battalion that happened to be passing by also comes rushing in to investigate the noise.

True story, well actually I think I need a five or higher, but eh.

This is exactly why I am not a fan of the d20 system.

Finished my first run through last night, a bit behind my friends.
Normal mode is pretty easy, but Nightmare really ups its game and presents a challenge.
Elite and Rare mobs pack a much bigger punch…

I’m still in Act 1 normal with my Witch Doctor due to adult responsibilities and server issues. However, despite my slow progression, I’m having tremendous fun. The Witch Doctor is way more fun than I expected. Grasp of the Dead is monstrous, and I can’t wait to see more of his abilities as I unlock them.

I think tl 2 going to be much better but d3 is what my gf is playing so had to get it

if she was not the online only would have made this a no buy for me

Been playing D3 with the Monk as my main, along with my dad and his Barbarian, just beat Normal, don’t have as much time to play as I’d like with my job. Games like this are one type of game my dad likes to play and are easy enough for him to understand, the auto stats on level up and no skill points makes it even easier for him. No more worrying about making the wrong decisions and being screwed for the rest of the game or have to make a new character to fix your mistakes.

If you haven’t found out yet, single-player does pause the game when you bring up the options menu, just can’t pause in multi-player.

I finally got a copy!!! So, feel free to friend me up (Gnipp) and I’d love to play with some fellow SOTM’ers

I played it shortly after it came out (my dad got it for me for BDay/Christmas…can't remember which as they are quite close together ;)) so there'll have been loads of patches and changes and stuff since I was last in the game, plus the expansion has come out as well now. Finished it all the way through when I did play it, though. I can remember cheering quite loudly when we finally finished Inferno Mode :D.

Not my favourite ARPG, though. I don't much like the way the skills and stuff work. I much prefer Titan Quest (and am looking forward to Grim Dawn). The Torchlight games are cool (replayed both a few months back). Also have just started Path of Exile (again, properly now it's no longer in Beta) with Ja'Ph' this evening :).

Haven't played it since beta, when it was terrible.

Forgot to mention Diablo II - that's pretty cool and I still go back to it every now and then. I first played it back in 2001, before the expansion came out (dunno when that happened) and right before we first got hold of EQ and then that kept my busy for about four years or so :D.

I I just started playing Diablo 3 a few weeks ago… I must say it’s a lot of fun… So much better with all the patches and bug fixes. I play quite frequently

I've been playing since launch:  Witch Doctor (Firebats and pets) was my main for a long while, until Reaper of Souls got me hooked on the Crusader (Fire/Melee build with a Maximus), whom I'm running at Torment II with.  I also just finally got my Barbarian (Lightning Frenzy) and Wizard (Glacial Spike/Frozen Orb) up to 70, who have inherited some of my old WD and Crusader gear.  

I have played around with the Demon Hunter and the Monk, but I found that I really didn't care for either.  If I ever go on a binge sometime soon, I'll try to get them up to 70--they're currently 60 and 54, respectively.

I played a Witch Doctor and ended up with my main attack as Zombie Bears (one of the versions of erm, Zombie Charger I think it's called) and I think I had Acid Rain (with the enlarged area effect) as my right click. For the number keys I can't remember much other than that I think I used Spirit Walk quite a bit in the later game, in emergencies - omfg Belial arrrrgh :P.
