I use Session Manager for Firefox to keep pre-loaded sets of tabs, one set for mornings (which includes the web comics I follow) and one for evenings (which includes the news-related sites I follow), and >G forums are on both.

Also, hamsters.

I have a tab dedicated to Hampsters.

I rarely ever check the >G forums.  I'm too busy telling the wierd colored Elephants that we don't have train cars that can hold them, and they might want to try flying.

I can't speak for other countries, but in the States if the TSA would just give the elephants their own security screening line, they'd probably have a much easier time trying to manage their flights.

If we're doing just random thoughts on this thread, I had a funny thought the other day...

I think it was a huge missed opportunity to not give Jim's Hat the effect: "Reduce radiant damage dealt to Chrono-Ranger by 1."

It's a hat, after all.

It would be funnier if it specified reducing damage dealt to Chrono Ranger from Citizen Dawn and Ra by 1.

Random thoughts?

One of my friends wants to rework the entire Realm of Discord deck, or at least the art and some of the damage types because someone misread it as the Realm of Disco, and we kept calling it that for the entire game.

All damage is now Sonic, Radiant or Psychic, and we want to make disco-themed versions of all of the art :P

PY

That’s my point. Wouldn’t the mod badge give you access to the PT forums? Admins don’t have two badges.

AR
arenson9
2014-05-16 21:08 UTC
#36

Oh, wait. I think you are noticing that the people who are Admins don't also have playtester badges, but the people who are Mods DO also have playtester badges, concluding that it's possible to be a Mod w/out being a playtester, and asking why that is possible.

I don't know for sure, but I think the reason is that the way the forums work, various abilities are tied to various roles, the admin role gives one the ability to do anything, the mod role gives one the ability to do various things to posts that the mod can see, and the playtester role gives one the ability to see some forums that not everyone can see. In order for people who have the mod role to be able to see the playtester forums without also having the playtester role, presumably the mod role would have to be altered. I don't know how hard it would be to alter that role, or if there might have been some interest in keeping mods from seeing some forums in the future, but my guess is that the real reason things work the way they do is because it was easy to configure the software this way.

Why isn’t Lightspeed Barrage X instances of 1 damage to a single target?

DO

Damage reduction would cripple Tachyon.  It already gives her a tough time.  With that change you would probably only play her alongside damage boosters if you deal with a DR likely opponent.  And if you deal with a non-DR opponent and she has a damage booster, she deals upwards of 27 x X damage where X is between 2 and 7 or so.

Hang in there! I heard of a great quitting technique that may help: every time you think of having another, call a friend. This friend will punch you in the face as hard as they can. This also works for dieting.

Consequently, I always available to help.

Tip from my psych professor at uni (whose research area was addictions): don't try to put your cravings out of your mind by not thinking about them. The studies he did showed that people who allowed themselves to think "I really want a cigarette" were much more able to let the craving go and had a higher quit success rate than those who tried to stop thinking about it altogether.

Seems that if you try not to think about a craving, it's much easier to obsess about it and that makes it more intense.

And good luck! If you've made up your mind, throw that pack away or give it to another smoker. Also, don't beat yourself up if you do fall off the wagon because nicotine is an extremely addictive substance, and definitely don't think "I'll quit again tomorrow" because then you'll smoke a million that day. Quit again right away.

I was talking to an ex-smoker once who said she hadn't had a cigarette in more than 20 years, but she was still quitting, because it was always a challenge.

I had another friend who had never smoked in her life, but after her bartending job was addicted, and had an urge inhale deeply every time she smelled smoke.

It's scary stuff. But it's quitable.

I've never smoked, but my sister does and she managed to successfully give up for a while (before some really stressful stuff came up and she started again) by making sure she sitll had fags on her but just putting off smoking one - "I'll have one in a few minutes", "I'll have one later", and so on. She said after about a week she didn't feel like having one at all so she just gave the ones she had to someone else (a work colleague who was a smoker, not some random person lol). She said if she'd got rid of all her fags (or smoked them all and not bought new ones), it would've been bugging her that she didn't have any on her if she wanted one. But the fact she could light one up at any time meant she was able to keep putting it off until she just didn't feel like one any more.

Hmm. I was considering creating a Let's Play series for the Sims where I make short videos or photo albums or something, and basically crowd-source all the important decisions via some kind of poll or vote. I kind of want to Ronway this.

Like, here's Ronway Theawesome! He wants to become a career criminal. Should we let him do that, or force him to teach innocent children for a living? He wants to kiss his new lovely girlfriend - shall we indulge him or make him flirt with his boss instead? He needs to pee, should we lock the bathroom door so he's forced to wet himself?

Hours of fun, right?

It was the first time I lost to Kismet in quite some time, so that was nice. We also had trouble flipping her thanks to the Environment's ability to keep flipping the Talisman back, so yeah...

The second match was against Cosmic Omnitron, who plays like 6 drones in a single turn, ouchies! Also, NightMist killed everybody! Woo!

Here's a little game I recently played. I will like to point out Absolute Zero, not only did he manage to do the most damage, he also never put a module into play. Isn't that pretty neat? Sadly damage dealt by the target to themself is also counted, but AZ only dealt 6 points himself (1 Frost-Bound Drain and 1 Hoarfire). This brings his total to 52. Also note that Tachyon had Pushing the Limits for most the game, probably about 8 damage she is missing was done to herself, this brings her total to 35.

First turn play was Cold Snap.

Second turn Cold Snap dealt damage to 1 damage to all non-hero targets. Played Focused Appertures.

Third Cold snap dealt 2 damage to all non-hero targets. Played Impale on Dawn.

Fourth and Fifth I am a little unsure of, but they consisted of playing another Impale and Hoarfire. So Dawn atleast took 5 each turn. She also took 3 from Hoarfire, the 2 was dealt to Autumn.

On the Sixth, Dawn took a total of 8 at the start, with all other non-hero targets taking 2. The card played was Thermal Shockwave.

Finally on the Seventh round, she still took 8 at the start, with all other non-hero targets taking the 2. With the play being Frostbound Drain dealing her 4 for the kill... So actually I guess Absolute Zero didn't deal himself any damage with Frostbound Drain.

PH

It is insane what they did to pull that landing off.  I was obsessed with being an astronaut when I was in Kindergarten, knew about 20 constellations and could tell you shat shuttle was in space and their primary mission on any day.  I would get excited sitting in school knowing while I st there a shuttle was taking off or landing.

1986 was a rough year.  All I wanted for my Birthday was a telescope to see Haley's Comet with.  Then 3 days before my 7th birthday I watched the Challenger break up on TV.  Less than 2 weeks later the light pollution was too much for me and my little telescope to see the comet.

I was depressed at 7 years old.  I stopped caring about the math and science I was years ahead in, I found other things and never went back.

My daughter is going to turn 7 this February.  She has seen live feeds of Astronauts on a space station, and there has been a Mars landing and now a Comet.

A whole new generation connecting to the stars, it is a beautiful thing.

The Challenger explosion, along with the fall of the Berlin Wall and 9/11, is one of the few world events where I remember precisely where I was when I learned of it.

I was 15. We had moved to Hong Kong just weeks before. I was going to a private school for the first time, and a Christian one at that – somewhat alarming, since I'm Jewish. It wasn't a particularly religious school as Christian schools go, seeing as how it was the only American school in Hong Kong and thus serving a quite diverse population, but there were required religion classes, including at least one bible study class.

So, there I was in "What is religion?", surrounded by kids I hardly knew, living in a foreign country, when an announcement came over the PA that the shuttle had exploded. It was incredibly shocking. I think we had a TV wheeled in to see the newscasts and see the explosion. It seemed unbelievable. Before then my impression of the shuttle program was that it was boring. They seemed safe and routine. They did mission after mission, flew up into space, orbitted around a bit, then came home. I vaguely thought we were behind in our space program. What had we done lately? Why couldn't we go further out in the solar system?

I was six. I remember that they rolled a TV on one of those big carts into the classroom so that we could watch the launch. When things went south, it took us a little bit to understand that it wasn't supposed to happen. I think we just took our cues from the teachers to be sufficiently horrified until it really sunk in.

Yeah, it's interesting. There were a lot of kids in school that saw this, which is why it sticks In so many brains. Teachers were excited about Christa McAuliffe being onboard, so they wanted students to see. Sadly, that meant a lot of people saw horror instead.

I was born in '84 so I don't remember the Challenger disaster, but of course I've seen plenty of footage and stuff about it on documentaries. My dad is really interested in astronomy (and also technically contributed during the first Moon landing by working at one of the relay stations to bounce communications around the world from the Moon to NASA since he was in the Navy and happened to be working ashore in some place called Kranjii at the time), so he's been giving me regular updates on how the Rosetta mission thingy is going. It's really cool that the thing landed okay, even if it apparently "bounced" twice before managing to land properly :D. I haven't seen any of the pics yet, though.

Being Ronway is like being the friend that everybody hates, but for some reason they never want to actually kick the friend out of the group. I find it quite enjoyable that people who have joined the G+ games have asked about the hate against Ronway, it's even more fun when I am there when they ask about it. I've been tempted to disappear for awhile just to see how long the Ronway things carry on in my absence, but I am so hooked on reading all the post here that I am unable to bring myself to do such a thing.

I'm Ronway all the time! My family loves it. Ronway has become a family name! Our last Router was named Ronway. The Maplestory character you see in my avatar is RonnieRonway, who would team up with my father, who went by the name of DaddyRonway. I just hope my son will carry on the Ronway name into the internet!

I am Ronway and I have no intention of being anything else! You folks are stuck with me!

Maybe because porcupines eat sticks, and you can use porcupine quills to skewer things together?

Well, it's easy to see how 'sticky' is related to 'stuck', and how 'stuck' is related to 'stick' (verb).  And it makes sense for 'stick' (verb) to be related to 'stick' (noun), since some of the earliest tools were sticks used to stick animals.

So 'sticky' is related to 'stick' by way of 'stick' and 'stuck'

Today we collectively decide what colour the official UK merchandise should be. Right now it's looking like mostly blue, with some other minor colours.

I hope to the Multiverse gods it's not purple.

Me: Siege-Breaker "I am here to break you acolyte, to break the curse of your loneliness"

Ronway: Sigh…

I was cleaning up my room today, and I discovered a book that I didn't know I had. It's called Animal Faces by Akira Satoh and Kyoko Toda. This is one of the pages in it, and is fairly representative of the book as a whole.

The animals included are the Gorilla, Camel, Lesser Panda, Elephant, Seal, Rhinoceros, Otter, Polar Bear, Raccoon Dog, Tapir, Goat, Orangutan, Tiger, Kangaroo, Hippopotamus, Asiatic Black Bear, Chimpanzee, Giraffe, Wolf, Fox, Zebra, Raccoon, Lion, and Japanese Monkey.

Also the author and photographer. They probably don’t count, but their pictures are in the book.

SI

They are the smallest breed of rabbit and will likely weigh under a kilo at full size. So, pretty small! The ears will get a bit bigger, but one of the characteristics of Netherland Dwarfs is small ears and a baby-like shape even as adults.

I don't think either one will be particularly grumpy as they were very chilled out when we went to visit, obviously very used to handling. Rabbits aren't generally keen on being picked up as it makes them feel unsafe. But who knows what they'll be like as they grow up? They all have different personalities. I just couldn't resist the name Nemesis because it is ridiculous for such a cute tiny thing, and I wanted a little homage to SotM, of course!

I don't think Nemesis will get to meet a female. Both are getting neutered as soon as their balls drop anyway... ;)

In the summer of 2011, before SotM was launched at GenCon, GtG has an online ... event? ... where they revelaled each hero in turn. I remember thinking that it was sort of ridiculous. Nobody knew anything about this game, why would we care what was being revealed? Imagine it, though, the original reveal of Wraith, Fanatic, Tempest, etc:

Then a T. Rex hit me for a bunch of damage and I was like "Okay. Lesson learned!"

The first character I played was Wraith, because I thought she had a cool name and looked like a sort of stealthy Rogue-type, which is the character I often play in RPGs. We played a few games (this was at the gaming club I use to go to - the game belonged to one of the guys there, who owned the non-enhanced base set and Rook City as nothing else existed at that point) and I played her every time and had fun :). When I got the game myself, of course, I gave everyone else a go and have new favourites, but I still think the Wraith is cool :).

I had brought my wife to a local boardgame day, and there were only 5 other people there for the first few hours and they were playing the new Sentinels game. So it was just my wife and me plaing a card game for a couple of hours to wait for a turn, but they played that game several times without telling us or including us. So we left.

A couple of months later, I got over my hating this game for ruining my saturday plans and gave it a try. I played Legacy, because I was told he was easy to learn and always helpful to have in the group. Looking back, I kind of understand now why everyone was so obsessed with the game that day.

A little late to the conversation, but my first hero was Tempest as well. I was at Gen Con 2011 and hadn't played any games there for about two days (my first time going and not a board gamer at the time). I'm sitting down when Paul ran up to my friends and me, saying "Hey, anyone want to demo a game? We need one more person." I said sure, and now here I am.

Just like Andy, I checked out their Facebook page later that night and saw the pictures with captions like "Finally, the reveal of our special card! Young Legacy!" I had the same thought of "Oh that's cute. They're making a big deal about these reveals on a page with ~100 fans. At least they're trying. Maybe I'll play this game a few times, but I'll probably get sick of these four villains."

Flash forward five years...

"I've still got to make plans for my Void Guard Idealist cosplay, talk to Craig about working the whole of Gen Con for them, playtest that new material, discuss Foote's latest theory on the forums, make Becky Blast into my next pen & paper RPG character, and meet up with my friends later to continue our Advanced-Challenge-Mode-Flawless-Victory campaign tonight!"

Awesome story.

My first was Ra, back in 2012. One of my friends brought the game to game night, and we played a 4 player game. I fell in love with it. I thought it could be the game that could give me my superhero gaming fix. Then he didn't bring it back for 2 years, and it fell off my radar…

Fast forward to 2014. He asked what games he could bring, and a vague recollection of liking the game prompt me to suggest SotM. He did bring it back, I played Ra yet again, and fell back in love with the game. This time, I bought a copy of the game myself. The rest, as they say, is history.

OblivAeon is just a metaphor for a Dentist extracting teeth one by one until they are replaced by the dentist's own creation, dentures.

Does it hold up?

That was a fantastic costume, I was running a fate of the Elder Gods demo during the auction and at one point looked out and saw Christopher facing away from me talking animatedly with someone, while I could hear his voice behind me running the auction.

I was once the least interesting member on a panel discussion about science in SFF with James Cambias, and someone asked him what he thought the fundamental difference between fantasy and sci fi was. He answered (to paraphrase) that a fantasy has to have some element of inexplicability to it, be it fate, magic, gods, or whatever. The more one explains a magic system, the more it becomes something like alternative-physics fiction than fantasy. I thought that was an interesting way to look at it.

I still want Sanderson to hurry up and write more of the Stormlight Archive, though.

So, does anyone have any good suggestions on what to do when FedEx smart post consistently messes up deliveries? In particular, when the post office seems to mess up delivery?

I had an issue with the Sentinels Foil pack getting lost in the mail that got resolved with GTG's help (Thanks for being awesome, Craig!), and now a different Kickstarter that was supposed to arrive today is listed as "incorrect address" and being returned to sender. Verified the info in BackerKit and FedEx are correct, so I can't tell if it's a fluke, but 2 for 2 with Kickstarter packages within a month of each other is really concerning.

I didn't like Kingkiller at all. The main character is too dang competent at individual activities, which is what keeps saving him from his really bad overall decisions. Meanwhile, the framing device with everything happening in the past kept making me yell "no go back to the present THERE IS A CRISIS THERE!" Also, urgh, the faerie bit.

I'll go ahead and stick my neck out again: while I loved "Heir to the Empire" in middle school, when I reread them as an adult I realized that all of Thrawn's "tactical genius" consisted of him revealing a plot-device technology that was previously unknown in the entire Star Wars universe, thus surprising everybody. Is the new version any better written?

Speaking of authors improving, though, I enjoyed the crap out of "The Collapsing Empire." It definitely read like a much more mature Scalzi, without sacrificing any of his fast-paced style.

None of those cards come out, I get a good damage-dealing setup though, end of round 1 Obsidian Field comes out of Primalis. Start of round 2, Chairman plays Rook city is mine, brings out the other 2 Obsidian fields. Easiest/Most fun Chairman game I've played.

I used to think that once you started a book you should finish it. Then I found that if I didn’t like a book, I just wouldn’t read it as often, and it would take forever to finish and move on. Now, I have a similar policy, if I don’t pick it up for awhile, it is time to put it back.

A convo I had elsewhere recently reminded me of how when I was a kid I used to read about parapsychology and occult stuff for fun.

But that's not the notable thing. The notable thing is that the reason I did this was because I discovered as a kid that my elementary school library had an entire section devoted to parapsychology and books about the occult and got curious.

Hello everyone! I didn't feel this worth making a thread for, but thought some people may have been curious why there has been a significant lack of Ronway the last couple of years.

The primary reason being my 8 year relationship came to an end 2 years ago. While it was certainly for the best, it did hit me fairly hard, largely because I met her at the tail end of High School so my entire adult life was with her. So it was a huge shift as to who the adult me is, which is still an ongoing search honestly. While the initial disappearance was because my life was coming apart I did eventually work my way out of it.

Now the reason I don't come on nearly as much I did is because I do a lot of things outside of just being on the computer. Now i'm not shaming anyone that does that, heck there are days I miss sitting at the computer for hours, playing SotM on Google+ or conversing with those on the forums. Last year I took my son, sister, and mother out to Saint Louis. I've actually started college last week. I joined another game group in person that meets up every other week.

I'm probably happier now than I have been in quite some time. And if any of you are going through some rough times I hope you'll be able to work through them and become stronger because of it.

Thank you to everyone that has been a part of my life.

-Ronway

Happy golden anniversary of the first time humans set foot on another world, everybody! You can listen in to all of the mission voice recordings and see all the videos played back on an exactly 50 year time delay at this web site: https://apolloinrealtime.org/11/. I've been listening in the background every chance I got at work this week. I think Mike Collins is my favorite!

As of the time of this post, they have just separated Eagle and Columbia so that Eagle can go down to the surface. The landing will be an about an hour and 45 minutes.

Well, let's be honest: The forums aren't even close to as active as they once were. ;-) (Although newer folks wouldn't know that, so no offense intended. :-D )

It really is nice to see you back, Ronway! :-)

Arenson9, my spouse, and I had a game of SotM today against Baron Blade in Mordengrad. Idealist and Lifeline just didn't get the cards they needed, and Harpy did what she could, but Blade and his forces truly got the jump on us. It was an impressively harsh 6 rounds, but these things happen. :-)

After Arenson9 left, Idealist and Lifeline came back with Tachyon and Dr. Medico for a rematch. Not only did the heroes get better cards, but they caught Mordengrad off-guard, easily ending the fight in less than 4 rounds with everyone in the high teens at the end. It's amazing how much of a difference 4 heroes, better hero draws, and worse villain/environment draws will make. ;-)

Anyone else have any games over the holiday weekend? Any other fun activities?

Thank you, butI haven't really ever left. I'd be surprised if it ever reads "Last seen: 1 week ago" beneath my name. My phone usually has the tab for the forums open. My posting is less frequent, largely due to how inactive the forums are these days. Boy do I sometimes miss the good old days around here.

No SotM games for me, I largely play solo as my usual gaming group isn't as big of a fan as I am. So it has become easier for me just to play on the app for 15 minutes for a game versus an hour with people.

I did pay Sub-terra and The Resistance the day before Christmas. On Sub-terra, 2 of the 6 people made it out alive. Fortunately I was one of them. 2 of the others were a bit far from everyone else so they weren't able to make it to the found exit in time. Another got blocked by an unlucky horror, with another trying to make it back to save them.

Huh, well, it's sad to hear that these Forums are in somewhat of a "dark age" (even though I wasn't around during "the good ol' days")... I wonder what's causing that... Any ideas?

I did play an interesting game of SotM lately: Progeny versus the Naturalist, Sky-Scraper, KNYFE, and Guise in Freedom Tower. Progeny, on the first turn, played both Scion of Storm cards, followed by an Hour of Reckoning. After that bad start, Progeny started taking us down pretty quickly (with some help from a Time of Tribulations, 1 or more [I forget] Entry Point[s], and the Nemeses Bonus). KNYFE was the first to go, she tried to protect herself with an Overcharged Null-Shield, but it wasn't enough. Next was Guise, who managed to play a semi-impressive chain of "play a card" cards, before he was taken out. Then Sky-Scraper, who did some good stuff her Links before getting Incapacitated. So, only the Naturalist remained, with HP in the low teens. He Transformed into the Nimble Gazelle and used Sky-Scraper's and KNYFE's Incapacitated Abilities to use the Gazelle's healing Power a lot, in addition to Guise's healing Incapacitated Ability. For the rest of the game, the Naturalist switched between the Crocodile, to damage Progeny, and the Gazell, to heal himself. We eventually won, with the Naturalist at 2 HP, and there was a time when he had only 1.

I assume the reason for the quietness is 'cause the entirety of official Sentinels content has been released now, so there are no upcoming expansions to talk about. Similarly the game's been around long enough that most detailed discussions about the various decks and mechanics have been somewhat exhausted. I think any significant boosts in forum activity now will come if >G release a new game or something. The Discord is still pretty busy too so I suppose some conversations that might've happened here now occur over there instead.

I love that about Sentinels. Incap abilities lend themselves to great come-from-behind, last-man-standing victories.
