There has been a Greater Than Games forum since 2011, when we first started the company.

The first iteration, built into our original website, was pretty janky. But it existed! And as people discovered Sentinels of the Multiverse, many of them found their way there. The forums grew rapidly alongside our website, our games, our fandom, and the company itself.

A lot happened in those digital halls.

There were rules questions and strategy discussions, wild speculation and elaborate theories, running jokes and ridiculous goofs. Friendships formed. Games got organized. People who might never otherwise have met found each other because they all cared about the same weird little card game.

And, behind the scenes, an enormous amount of playtesting happened there, too. Sentinels of the Multiverse and many other Greater Than Games projects were developed with the help of our playtesting community in a super-secret Playtester Only section of the forums. That functionality — and, much more importantly, the people using it — was genuinely important to the success of GTG.

Then the 2020s brought a lot of changes.

First, we rebuilt our website because the old backend was… NOT good. That meant changing the forum software as well. There were ups and downs. The transition wasn’t perfectly executed. But the community persevered, and the forums continued to be a gathering place for GTG fans.

Then, as the company itself changed, GTG staff became less and less present on the forums, and eventually our ability to administer them became extremely limited. Over the last couple years, the forums have become much quieter than they once were.

Which brings us to today.

The Greater Than Games community is still strong. At every convention we attend, we meet dedicated, enthusiastic people who have been playing our games for years alongside people who are discovering them for the first time. There are active communities gathering online around The Letters Page, the Order of the Standard Table, and elsewhere. We even have a new secret playtesting area, carrying on one of the oldest traditions of the GTG forums.

But these forums themselves are now a shadow of the bustling place they once were.

We have finally regained enough access to them to make this post, but restoring and maintaining the forums properly would require substantial expense and ongoing resources that simply don’t make sense for what they have become.

And so, with a heavy heart, it is time to close the doors.

Farewell, ye faithful halls of olden times!

You were always greater than the sum of your software. You gave thousands of conversations a home. You helped people meet one another, share ideas, make friends, build games, tell stories, argue about card interactions, concoct increasingly improbable Multiverse theories, and have a tremendous amount of fun together.

The forums are going away.

The community they helped create isn’t.

We’ll remember the good times had here for a long, long time.

Thank you for being here.

Thank you for playing greater.

And thank you for being part of the Multiverse.

(The GTG forums will be deleted on Monday, September 14th. We wish we could keep them around longer, but unfortunately, that just isn’t possible. We look forward to seeing and interacting with all of you elsewhere as we continue to play greater together throughout the wide GTG Multiverse!)

It’ll be sad to make it go, but happy y’all at least get one more hurrah on it prior to it closing. Funnily enough I believe my first post on the forms is going to be my last.

Well, this makes 9/11 just that little bit worse. Not even three full days to make sure everything I might want in the future is safely on the Wayback Machine. Great.

This is truly the end of an era. To quote Doctor Who: “Everything ends, and it’s always sad. But everything begins again too, and that’s always happy. Be happy.” And hey, 15 years isn’t a bad run.

For anyone wishing to preserve all of your posts from here, I’ve found that you can go to Preferences > Account > Export your data > Request archive, which I believe should cause the system to send you a message, from which you can download a zip file, which contains, among other things, a CSV file of all your posts. It does not, of course, include the posts of any other users, but such is life.

For myself, anyone who wishes to can find me on the unofficial Realm of Discord Discord server. I know Discord isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, but it’s something, and it’s entirely free.

It goes without saying that I’ve had a great deal of fun and made a great deal of fond memories over the years with all of you here. I have undoubtedly enjoyed the honour of being a part of this community, of talking about all these silly little games with you all, of sharing stories and creations.

You’ve all been absolutely fantastic. Justifier/LonelyMan, Chief Lackey Rich, FrivYeti, MindWanderer, TakeWalker, Rabit, OddballPaladin, Powerhound, Thunderbird, Omegatron, Mistergone, Jeysie, Sea-Envy, Trajector, Skywhale, Godai, CornCakes, and everyone else. It has been an honour. I salute each and every one of you.

For everyone here, whether we ever cross paths again or not, I wish you all nothing but the very best going forwards in all things.

See ya around, Sentinels!

Yeah, not great but in light of the last year it’s a minor inconvenience. If diverting resources away from here is what it takes for the company to regain its footing I would rather have The Letters Page and more Sentinels games first and foremost. I’ll still hang out of the Realm of Discord server for whatever tomfoolery happens there.

As much as I expected this to eventually come, it still hit harder than I expected. :pensive: I agree with the decision, but … oof. :persevere:

It truly has been an amazing 15 years for this community. Thank you to everyone who has been here, from longtime active participants to @Xenokkah as our newest person.

There are a lot of memories, here. Those earliest posts of a new community figuring itself out. Sharing in our excitement as a new expansion or game was on the horizon. Telling stories to each other. Planning meet-ups. Answering daily questions. Coming together to stun the GTG folks by busting through the ARG challenges lightning fast…

As always, best wishes to everyone. We started as a community of people focused on cooperatively saving the multiverse. That kernel at the heart is, I think, the reason the community was so strong. I firmly believe we’ll continue in other venues.

See you out there, folks. And — as always — have a better one! :green_heart:

I will say if it’s possible to make a copy of the underlying database file itself, that could be a way for someone to store it and later turn it into a static version of the forums as an archive. There’s a lot of good information on this forum and it’d be a shame to lose it.

As for more emotional thoughts, I don’t know what to even say. I know other than a few people nobody even wants me around at this point anyway, but, this fandom was still a huge part of my life. I met many good people who have made my life better and hopefully I made/make theirs better too, and I enjoyed what contributions I made, working on the wiki, and all the positive interactions and contributions.

I hope the fandom keeps on keeping on wherever else it ends up.

Sad to see this place go. I had a lot of fun speculating on stuff for RCR and Disparation, discussing the latest episodes and learning new history facts from those conversations. I remember first finding Spiff’s guides and really learning how to use each hero.

Even if things have fallen off in the last few years, I’ll still have fond memories here. But I’m most glad the community and this franchise continues to live on, even if it lives on elsewhere.

I am in the progress of backing up the forums! I have a copy of all posts as of a few days ago, now I’m trying to grab the couple that have happened since I pulled the data. Also I’m trying to make it more human readable than a bunch of JSON buried in many subfolders.

I’ll post on here and BGG (and various Discords) once I get it organized!
