So we took on the dreamer today: Scholar, Unity, and Fanatic in the wild, wild west.
We thought we'd totally win the game because Fanatic set that shield up around the dreamer and she had End of Days in her hand. Scholar had some card that would let you pull a card out of your discard pile and put it on your deck again, so basically we could wipe the dreamer twice.
Well, we doddled (we're still noobs) around and tried to clean up the first set of projections on our own without the EoD card. We wanted to save the shield around the Dreamer and also not lose our ongoings. Bad move, it cost us because we never could get over the hump and we kept getting wittled down on damage. She dropped EoD, but then we had to get six projections up to do EoD again and win. We took three out and by then there were three others back up again and she was able to nuke them. We ended the game with Scholar having 6 HP, and Unity and Fanatic having 3 each.
I've fought and beat the Chairman and Iron Legacy now, and both times everyone on the board felt like it was COMPLETLY impossible to win, but somehow we did. When we fought the Dreamer it was completly opposite: we thought we couldn't lose but we ALMOST DID.

You know you can't Chastise the Dreamer, right? It says to put it on a non-hero target other than a character card.

Apart from that little whoopsie of, from the sounds of it, putting Chastise on a charcater card, you can get around losing your stuff to End of Days if Unity has a Bee Bot out - when End of Days triggers, destroy everything that you don't want hanging around, then destroy Bee Bot - Bee Bot's destruction momentarily interrupts End of Days and may destroy an ongoing card. So destroy End of Days, cutting off its effect before it can take out any other hero cards (plus any useful environment cards which may be in play, like Police Back-Up or whatever). That way, everyone gets to keep their stuff apart from that one Bee Bot. It's like your own version of Devastating Aurora :D.

Those "whoops" moments definitely happen, especially when you're new to the game. I remember when my friends and I thought Lead From the Front could redirect Environment damage as well and with Danger Sense out, we were using Legacy to completely shut down the environment. So we just sat there in Atlantis, letting all the villains get crushed by damage while it just pinged off Legacy. Upon a second reading of the card, we realized that this was not kosher :)
I love playing The Dreamer!! Half the time I feel like there is no hope and this little girl is owning my team and the other half of the time I feel like I can beat her as long as i don't mess up (then vilanous weaponry and two dark heroes pop up). She is the villain that I have the most even record against.
My whoops moment had to do with getting Ra set up with solar flare + staff + Imbued fire + Flesh of the sun god. i had two games where I just destroyed the villain and then i looked up the rules for solar flare and realized what just happened.

A LOT of people (myself included) have made that mistake, especially with the older versions of the game. It was such a common misconception that Christopher made a specific ruling about situations like that (the infamous "rule 15" you may hear about from time to time). Solar Flares are still super fun, though!
