So word seems to be slowly spreading (with confirmations the info comes from Greater Than Games) that the reprint of Rook City and Infernal Relics will be in one box.

I'm curious to learn the reasoning for this.

Why combine them?

What about those who've supported the company by getting one or the other? Thats a big risk of angry customers?

What size will the box be?

Is this the plan for future reprints of expansions?

Is there any change to content?

Is there any addition of tokens or extras given the size of the set?

The only thing that comes to mind is cost to produce, but angering fans with only one set or the other already seems like it would not be worth that risk.

Hoping for some sort of official statement.

It is to be hoped that the Rook City cards at least will get some much-needed errata.  (If you don't see the need, play against the Ennead in Rook City and then get back to me.  The Matriarch also has at least one card which could use an update.)

As to people with only one set or the other, well, this is why I haven't gone out and bought Infernal Relics, as Rook City is impossible to find for a reasonable price.  But probably the solution will be for people who have only Rook City to look for people who have Infernal Relics and offer to go halvsies on the new box.

This is the first time I am hearing they will be in one box. Is this just from the rumor mill?

I only saw these comments today myself...a BGG discussion tipped me off. Seems like I can think of a few pros and a lot of cons...but I can only assume those pros ($) make the difference, and possibly the difference of getting a reprint at all so if thats the case I'm all for it.

I just worry about fall out from fans. There is quite the entitled crowd amongst boardgamers, at least as represented by sources such as BGG.

I don't want backlast to hurt the company.

It really kinda sucks for those who are only missing RC to have to repurchase IR. For me, I still need to update my original printing to the EE as having 4 whole environment decks without art is rather a huge bummer, plus tons of new art a lot of places. The EE errata was minor so I wasn't worried about it.

I do not see IR getting new errata or new art. It is far too new and was put together well from the start. However, I would bet a good deal that RC at least is getting some errata, especially as it concerns Fixer's tools and Expats Hairflex Trigger. New art not so much, but certainly errata. Those are all just pure speculative guesses, but if the errata in RC is going to be significant enough (and it certainly is possible) then Id probably like to own it. But I would have very large reservations about buying something I kinda dont really need when its bundled with something that I really really dont need.

All of that is assuming a ton of things, so I am happy to sit back and wait to see how this thing pans out.

The way it interacts with Matriarch is the specific issue I am refering to. I am anticipating a slightly different wording to make the intent of the interaction much more clear. Same with Fixer to some extent. Nothing will really "change". Just clarified. Thats at least what I am hoping for.

Agreed. I am hopeful that at least some of the people affected will end up, whether directly or indirectly, collaborating such that the problem kind of goes away. If there's one person who as IR, but not RC and another that has RC, but not IR. One of them could sell what they have to the other and then buy the new box.

The reasoning behind this reprint decision is as follows:

1) It will provide additional storage space for people who are interested in sleeving cards, as it will come in a box with the same dimensions as Enhanced Edition (for those who do not sleeve, Vengeance will provide sufficient extra space).

2) It will make warehouse operations much easier, since now Enhanced Edition, Vengeance, and the Rook City / Infernal Relics box set will all be the same size.

3) The combined MSRP of the separate expansions will wind up having been essentially the same (actually $0.05 less) than the MSRP of the new product.

4) Aside from some typos (which would be fixed in any reprint), the game content will not change at all.

5) The exact same number of copies of Rook City and Infernal Relics have been printed to date, so the number of people with one but not the other will be relatively small.

May I offer a suggestion? Allow the few people who would need only RC or IR, to buy it without a box from GtG. If you have the decks anyways for replacements, you might also be able to sell a RC or IR bundle.

@Foote

Yes.

@Matchstickman

Yes.

@Pydro

Probably not, since the cards would be a slightly different size (specifically, the current printing of Rook City has a slightly different card size than all of the rest of the cards in the game. This new reprint will fix this, but, as a result, mixing and matching "old" and "new" Rook City cards won't work well).

I'd like to join the crew of people that would like to be able to purchase a RC individually even if it is without box, I have few opprotunities to purchase things at steep discounts in the US due to shipping charges to Canada (I am sorry EU people I know it is worse for you and VAT or somehting) but when I had family coming up form the USA I ordered a copy of available expansions for them to bring up. If the RC were available as a single set I would appreciate that.

Thanks for listening to the community. If I knew that the combo box was coming out and had someone to bring it up to Canada for me I might have been all over that.

Thanks for  a great (er than) game guys!

I avoided purchasing IR specifically because of this whole issue.  If it were definitely confirmed that buying RC packs directly were an option, I could go out and get IR now (and would love to do so, as Nightmist is my single favorite hero, along with the Ennead being my second favorite villain and Akash'bhuta a close third, and Realm of Discord my favorite Environment - basically, I want IR real real bad).

Also, inquiring minds want to know, what is this combo box called?  I for one am hoping it's simply the "Enhanced Expansion".

@ Paul:  The print run for the two expansions might be identical, but one is much older, which means that most of the people who have RC but not IR may have quit playing the game (due to loss of interest, lack of free time, personal tragedy, or any number of such reasons), and there are probably also a significant number of RC copies which were snatched up by speculators and are gathering dust in a warehouse, while their owners put up Ebay listings offering them for $500 or even $2,000 and patiently waiting for some rube to be that desperate.  The point being, there will almost certainly be significantly fewer people in the market for only the IR half of this.  I really hope your print solution makes it possible to run off some extra copies of just the RC cards.

@ Foote:  I'm still not clear what the problem is.  HTR shoots every bird as it comes out, and it's older than the bird so it resolves before the bird's own ability and thus prevents playing a new villain card.  Not sure which of Fixer's tools is at question, I'm guessing it's about Jack Handle being chosen as a destruction for one of Matty's retaliations, and whether the damage continues on to the other birds?  I'm fairly confident from the existing errata that this would be "no"...once Jack Handle leaves play, all effects generated by it cease.  (The cards which really need errata are ones that specifically do something after they're destroyed, and I believe they are ALL in mini-expansions.)

I imagine if the line "Whenever a Fowl card is played from The Matriarch's deck, play the top card of her deck." or something to that effect on her rules card would be enough to solve this problem.  Though, considering Horrid Cacophany (and everything else about The Matriarch), I'm not terribly heartbroken by the idea of Expat cutting her off from her birds with Amanda's sharp aim.

Agreed.  I really don't think the Matriarch deserves to be as hard as she is.  The game's only difficulty 4 villains are the evil-alternate-universe version of the game's iconic hero, the boss of all crime in an entire horrific city, possibly the evil-alternate-universe secretary of the game's iconic hero team, and…a butthurt teenage Goth girl with a magic mask and a fetish for bad poetry.  It just doesn't seem fitting for her to be tougher than, say, Plague Rat or Apostate or La Capitan.

I am disappointed with this news as I am one of the "relatively few" affected by this.  Shame on me for letting my enthusiasm for this game lead me to do something silly like purchase the last remaining copy of Infernal Relics from coolstuff inc three weeks ago thinking that I'll be able to buy a stand alone reprint of Rook City.

You got me GTG, you got me.  This makes me sad, so how about you make me happy again and give me a 19.95 discount on the playmat with proof of purchase and we'll call it even?  I'll even send you back my stand alone copy of Infernal Relics instead of feeding it to the hungry recycling bins in my apartment complex.

There was a time when a friend was lamenting the fact that he already had the individual trades for the comic "Y:  The Last Man" and wanted to purchase the hardback deluxe volumes instead.  I jokingly responded "You could lend me what you have, and if it's as awesome as you say it is I might buy them off of you."

After reading three trades I bought every trade paperback he had and completed the series on my own while he finished his collection with the hardbacks.

I'm wicked sorry that you got such a sour deal out of this, but you may be able to make some scratch off of your copy by getting someone into the game and selling your "vintage" copy to them.  It may not work, but it's worth a try!

And their playmats are incredible and definitely worth investing in.

Selling a new play JUST Infernal Relics isn't likely to work very well, as they'd need at least one other set to play a real game; not to mention the two heroes they would have are certainly not starter heroes.

My proposal involved getting the new player involved to the point of purchasing the core set (which is something I've managed to do with at least three players so far) and then selling Infernal Relics to them.  The game doesn't support only two heroes, so just selling a player Infernal Relics would definitely be a foolish attempt.  I'm sorry I didn't clearly convey that.

We laugh, but there are a lot of players that want early editions of games/comics/books/etc.  You may be able to find a buyer that wants the original printing of Infernal Relics.  I know there have been a lot of people curious about the original "Hippocalypse" artwork on Haka's Savage Mana card from the first edition.  There may be a similar event with certain reprinted cards of RC/IR.

If GtG doesn't offer the expansions for sale individually, there will be plenty of sellers who split and sell them individually (maybe not plenty but I know my company would at least).   There is no reason to be upset for any reason at GtG.  Either they will sell them individually somehow or the market will.

I would imagine that Rook City would be more sought after for awhile so in order to sell both expansions at the same rate (which is pretty much mandatory for a retailer who splits open product), prices would be higher for Rook City than Infernal Relics but still be around MSRP.

EN
Envisioner

Unfortunately that is not really a balanced solution, as Rook City is older and harder to find; I could go out and buy Infernal Relics right now, and so could a guy who already has RC, but if I bought it instead of him, I could not then go out and find a copy of RC (at least not for retail) to go with my IR, whereas he could just find another store that has IR still on the shelves, or order it through a game store (even if the >G webstore is sold out of them, it seems as though FLGSes and their distributors can still get some).

I think you're mistaken there.  At least one Ebay speculator about a month ago was asking two thousand dollars for a Rook City set.  This is obviously insane, but it reinforces the point that this is an old and out of print product, which can command much higher prices than something that's still fairly easy to find.  More recently, a Rook City was going for $100, and if I could have talked the guy down to $80, I'd probably have taken that rather than waiting.  Any store who sells the RC half of this box for $20 is giving money away, and whoever buys them will probably be more speculators that turn around and sell them for $100-$2000.

I'm not really sure what you mean as I am talking about after the reprints has been published.  So there are two different time points here. First I'll address the now.  Currently RC and IR are both out of print.  IR is sold out at all major distributors as of right now  (at least 3 out of the top 4 that I know of) and although there are still copies to be found at Many FLGS's they won't be able to order anymore.  The major online retailers are all pretty much sold out.  Best place to find IR is Amazon (even eBay only has 9 copies left).  IR will in all liklihood be sold out almost everywhere except random FLGS's within 2-3 weeks.

The future however, after >G reprints the combo will be different.  I will personally buy the combo, break it open, and sell the individual expansions for around MSRP if the market exists to do so (and by MSRP I mean $20 for each expansion or less).  There will not be any sky high prices for either expansion anymore.  The issue is that temporarily RC will be in higher demand (after 3-4 months or so I would actually expect IR to be in higher demand since for someone who only wants to purchase one of the two expansions, IR is would more likely but that's just my conjecture) but that just means I might sell RC for $20 and IR for $16 as an example.  They will be priced to sell at the same rate.

I think we must be confusing each other because I am not sure how I am mistaken.  Again, I was talking about the future after the reprint is available. Current market is a whole different story.  That seller lowered their price to $130 and sold two copies (highest sales that I know of) and has since sold 4 more copies at $100.  Once the reprint is available (it's not a limited release) no one will be able to sell a new RC for more than $25 or so.

The resale market for RC will never be sustainable at a price point higher than the cost of the combo which we can estimate at $40-50 in the US. Who is going to spend $100 when they can spend $50 and get more even if they already own half of it? Now after the combo print run is sold out and we are in between runs we have a wild west scenario. Also, lets not forget that we are dealing with updated versions of RC however minor those changes are that means older copies of RC are in a small eay obsolete. Now we saw some crazy people trying to sell their original copies of the core game when the EE came out but that shit didn’t last long.

TLDR: Only suckers will buy a $100 copy of RC rather than wait a few months for the combo.

I don't think I really qualify as a sucker; three months (assuming no unexpected delays!) are a long time, and if I still had money coming out my ears as I did when I was working, I'd gladly pay not to have to wait.  Granted I didn't discover SOTM until I was close to the end of my unemployment, but even so I could have budgeted a bit and afforded the RC box for $100 a few weeks ago, and spend all those weeks playing with shiny new RC cards.  That would have been quality entertainment at an only moderately steep price.

December would be great, since it's the very next month, and the month of Christmas and my birthday. Does it still seem likely that December 2013 will be Rook Relics Readiness month?

I'm new to playing SotM, as is my sister (my main gaming partner) and our gaming friends. I was about to buy Infernal Relics from a semi-nearby game store, but now I think I'll wait.

I got the Enchanced main game from the game store yesterday, along with Ambuscade. I'm going to get Shattered Timelines, Miss Information, The Scholar, Silver Gulch 1883, and The Final Wateland this weekend, because the aforementioned gaming store had all of them, plus Infernal Relics. Honestly, I want Rook City really bad, so I'd rather wait for the combo pack than buy Infernal Relics twice. XD

Anywho, I did a lot of digging on the internet to find out what's up with all of the expansions, so thanks for this informative thread! Now all I need is Unity, and I'll feel complete. LOL. XD
