Sentinels Slang

My regular gaming group is...well, saying that we're a little offbeat is putting it nicely.  Among our numerous idiosyncracies, we have a tendency to assign slang to different elements of our regular games; SotM, as you might imagine, is no exception.

Our table has included:

• Omnitron -- "Om nom nom" or "Megaman" (especially when referring to Omnitron X)
• Chrono-Ranger -- Chrono Trigger (a beloved video game)
• Team Leader Tachyon -- "Nerf Tachyon" (Implying what most of us believe should happen to this variant...)
• Cleansing Downpour -- "Chocolate Rain" (from the ubiquitous YouTube video)
• Realm of Discord -- "Ry'leh" (ia ia!)
• Whenever a player gives everyone else hit points or cards -- "Hit points?!  I love hit points!"

That's just a small sampling of our usual table talk.  Do you have Sentinels-based slang around your table? 

"Danger Sense" is "Danger Zone" to us. Then everyone sings.

There's one card in Tempest's deck that we all just call "Talk to Fish"... I don't even remember its real name. 

We always call Fixer's "Overdrive" simply "Punching the Dragon!"

Lol, I've used "Om nom nom" as well, for Omnitron. My usual name for Omnitron-X is Omni-10 (because the X is a 10, after all).

Sometimes I'll refer to characters by their real names - Jim more than anyone, I think, but I'll also use Maia, Paul, Lilian, and others.

Often when dealing one point of damage to something, I'll say "Plink!" (therefore this comes up more often with Tachyon and Jim).

Sometimes when killing Zombies I'll make the zombie death noise from Minecraft.

I'll often refer to a certain card in Ciizen Dawn's deck (of which there are two copies) as "The Card" or "That card".

I also often shorten characters' names - Leggy, Tachy, Gloomy, Blade, Rat, Ab'Zero, etc.

I refer to Turret Mode as "Dakka dakka dakka" or "More dakka". This word also often comes up in relation to Expatriette's guns. On a similar theme, I may use phrases like "BURN THE HERETIC!" when Fanatic uses smite-y powers.

There are probably plenty of others but I can't remember them atm...

Edit - Slow internet means that a bunch of other people have posted replies before mine went through, lol. Anyway, add "Punching the Dragon" to my list of expressions - I'd forgotten that one! Yeah, I call Overdrive that as well :).

From the Google games:

• Grandpa Legacy - Jerk Legacy (due to the fact that he tend to play more "selfishly" than regular Legacy). This has lead to other promo versions of heroes occasionally being labelled "jerk" too (especially if they're played by Ronway).
• Healing - hugs. "Legacy gives everyone hugs!" "Argent hugs Tachyon and Fixer."
• "I hit all the things!" (usually from me, and often modified to, "I hit an appropriate number of things."
• Die - randomisation device/device of randomisation (used often by those of us who prefer not to actually select our hero).

Plague Rat - Plaque Rat, Plaxor Rat (just because, no real significance)

Cryobot - Crying Bot (because NOBODY LOVES HIM in our group)

Gloomweaver - Gloam-wavver, Glim-Glammer, "Gloomweava!" ala "Dream Weaver"

Apostate - Apasta (delicious!)

Akash'bhuta - AB, Dude Skyghost (based on what we heard of her name's translation on the IR playtesting forum)

A lot of these are just silly phonetics, but I think a few are clever and fun.

Oh yeah, and a weird after-game game which I can't even begin to explain properly lead to Flak Jacket being called "Ghost Boxing". It does honestly make sense...

Oh yeah, another I forgot - Anvil and Hammer are, naturally, Christopher and Adam :).

And naturally, the Raptor Bot is Mr Chomps...but I think most of us probably call him (well, them) that, right? ;)

We got BUDDABUDDABUDDABUDDA for Turret Mode, Lemon Cannon for Grace Under Fire, AMNITRAN for Omnitron, Chrono-Trigger, BABY (spoken like Heavy from TF2) Visionary for Dreamer, LA CAPITAN (spoken with a prominent French accent). Alfred Bitchcock for The Matriarch, the general idea of Haka stuffing things into his pants with Savage Mana, singing Surfin' Bird whenever we play the Matriarch, making the Transformers sound effect whenever Unity turns someone else's equipment into a golem (particularly Rocket Punch. That's hilarious!), Haka of Sandvich for Haka of Shielding, Hat Creation Device for Displaced Armory (as well as giving Jim's Hat the ability "All equipment cards now have the HAT keyword."), and a few from Vengeance I can't share.

When we play Sentinels, we REALLY have fun playing Sentinels.

"Get in the Suit!"  or "I don't want to put on the hippo suit..."   or some such variant, referring to the original art on the Savage Mana card.

"Ambuscade plays a trap card", and the rare "The heroes activated Ambuscade's trap card!" Also "It's a trap!"

and the Amphibious Chupacabra is a "chupathingy".

 chupathingy... I like it.   Got a ring to it.

We call the Legacies - Papa Legacy (normal), Baby Legacy, and Grandpa Legacy.

Citizen Truth - the a**hole

Gene-bound Guard - the jerk

While I think a lot of people use these:

     We always refer to anything with "reduce damage dealt to" as DR (my SotM group was previously a D&D group)

     We refer to anything that deals damage to all targets as AE or villain AE if it only hits villains, etc

Argent Adept - The Bard

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Yeah, DR comes up with us a lot too.

I often refer to Unity as Uni, which usually prompts someone to do a very annoying impression of the very annoying character from the old D&D cartoon. This usually prompts threats of violence from me.

"F*@%ing asshole Mable" or words to that effect are fairly frequent too.

And someone singing "Ooh Glooooooooomweaver, I believe you can get me through the na-haight," or "It's the Final Wasteland! De de de duh, de du de duh duh..."

If I could give you a thumbs-up here, I would.

We always have an idiot yelling "FINISH HIM!!" when he brings the villain down to 1 or 2 HP, pretty much handing him over to the next player...

That idiot is usually me...

other Mortal Kombat yells include "Come here!/Get over here!!" when grappling hook is played... "Toasty!!" for any number of Ra's moves... and "Fatality" when a hero kills another hero just for fun when we know we have the game in the bag. 

"Ping" when doing exactly 1 damage with someone, Chrono-Ranger does a lot of pinging at the beginning of the game.

"Flip out" when someone uses an effect to play a card from the top of the deck e.g. Omnitron-X or The Scholar.

And I say "Wooo!" when someone lets me draw a card out of turn (or when I play a card that does).

I've also gotten a lot of players to chant "Flip, flip, Flipadelphia!" from Always Sunny in Philadelphia when a villain character card flips (and some of them haven't even seen that episode!).

We have a few...

Plink- general exclamation meaning that damage didn't get through due to damage reduction

Zorch- anytime Young Legacy's base power is used.

Thwack- any sort of melee hit

"Stealth bot!" Said anytime the person running the villain can just stop talking beacause stealthy is just taking all the damage and nullifying.

"Human Shield" has become a popular "stealth bot!" alternative at my gaming table.

Any time a hero target causes itself psychic damage, we refer to it as "emotional damage."

Ooh, someone's mention of Savage Mana reminded me that I also tend to refer to Haka as "eating" cards when he puts them beneath it, and usually accompany this with an "om nom nom" :D.

I also do the "Doo-doo doo doo, doo-doo doo-doo-doo" thing when speaking of the Final Wasteland.

Oh, and I see I'm not the only one to say "It's a trap!" when fighting against Ambuscade :D.

On the DnD-related things, I also think of the Adept as a Bard, though if I'm referring to him by anything other than his title, it's usually "Mr Drake".

I refer to damage reduction as "soak" (from my EQ days).

I sometimes refer to multiple-target damage as AE, but sometimes call it multi-hit.

We do the Final Wasteland, and Gloomweaver.

Raptor Bot I always throw down a Grimlock impression, "Raptor Bot no like Omnoitron!"

As Visionary when I use Precognition I alway say "and that's half the battle," a somewhat convoluted GI Joe reference.

Close Quarters Combat will often get a "now it's time to fight with Knives!" often followed by the Knifing around song.  (Space Ghost reference)

Tempest gets tons of Lost Skeleton "On Marva we call lightning. . . " jokes.

The above has led to emphatic cries of "You can't make aliens dance" when Adept tries to buff Tempest.

The Tumbleweed from Time Cataclysm gets the "OH NO, THE TUMBLEWEED!" panic and freaking out.  We frequently then prioritize destroying it with environment destruction effects, I still don't think we've ever attacked it, but it did get End of Days played on it, and once chastised.

"You suck Legacy" is a common theme in our games, with Iron Legacy or the Hero version, usually after he draws a card we don't need him to have, or IL pounds us, It has been directed at Champion Bot a few times as well.

I have a firend who can't help but sing "who'll stop the rain" whenever Tempest heals.

We definitely do refer to the card from Dawn's deck as "That Card," it shall not be named.

"For America!" gets called a lot with Legacy playing.

Stealth Bot is "Bot, Stealth Bot." when played.

Oh, and for some reason Throat Jab tends to get a "Crotch Shot" when it's played.

Lots of singing and wierd refrences in our group, the above are the decent and reasonably humorous results, it gets much worse.

Seriously, that is SUCH a good movie!  I'll have to remember that one next time I'm playing Tempest!

All of Tempest's attacks deal fish damage.

Legacy "raises the flag" when he uses Galvanize. If he has Inspiring Presence, he's raising two flags.

"Legacy charges! Motivationally!"

You also say, "Everyone draw a card!" in a very particular way with the same inflection each time which is difficult to describe here. It's like you're using the words "everyone draw a card" but you're really saying "Wooo!"

The only Sentinel Slang I've had when playing with the Girlfriend and her 11 yearold has been for Akash'bhuta.

Whom we refer to as OshKosh B'gosh.

Apostate - A prostate    We really didn't enjoy our first games against him.

Argent Adept - Hargent Hadept  (some accent thing from someplace we picked up)

Whenever Omnitron-X plays reset, we say "Boop!"  

Wagner Mars Base - Vagner Mars Base (German accent)

Whenever Aurora plays, we say "Aurora Revolution!"  Usually followed by "I'm a lemming!"  From Battle Arena Toshendin.  One character, a girl with a whip, had a move where she would spin around and say "Aurora Revolution!" and half the time the move would cause her to fall off the battlefield, to her death.

We also do the Final Countdown for the Final Wasteland.

When Legacy uses Motivational Charge - "For Great Justice!"

Whenever a boss's damage gets redirected to themselves: "Quit hitting yourself!  Quit hitting yourself!"

Whenever Omnitron-X is going to take care of something: "Beep boop.  I got this."

Rocket Punch - "Rocketu Puncho!"

Lightspeed Barrage - "Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken!" (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire technique from Ranma 1/2

Ground Pound - "Haka smash!"

Unity - "Unity!" - The Dave Shappel Show

Wraith uses Stealth or Stealth Bot blocks damage - "Nin nin nin!" (Flonne from Disgaea)

The Dude - The Scholar

Ooh, you just reminded me of another couple I use...

I sometimes say "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" when playing Reset on Omni-10.

I also say "Vahgner" for Wagner, but...that's because that's how it's pronounced, or so I assume.

I don't think I've yet exlcaimed "For Science!" when playing Tachyon or Unity (or Omni-10)...but I probably should at some point ;).

I generally don't call the characters by their proper names. They all have shifting words that I throw around when they hit the table.

We've Huggy (Haka), Rat (Wraith), Ex-Patty/Ex-Paddy Wagon (Expatriette), Legs (Legacy(ies)), Abs (Absolute Zero), OmniX (Omnitron-X), Citizen Dune (Dawn), Bunkie, Mr Fixit, Tacks, etc.

Bunker has a Potato Cannon, everything he does is referred to as BUDDABUDDABUDDA!!

Kismet has a song sung titled 'It'll Be Okay' about implied incest. No reason, other than kismet being a lyrci in it.O

Oh, golly! This list would be endless if I actually sat here and thought about it. I use code words for everything, in every game ever.

Here's one I just remembered from one of my groups.

Polyphoric Flare (Argent Adept) becomes "Polyphonic Spree."

We use a lot of these, too. But a few seem unique to our group.

"Flick" is one damage that actually gets through. Comes from Magic the Gathering.

"Tanky McTankerton" -- the Scholar -- particularly with Flesh to Iron.

"Absorb" -- whenever damage reduction is sufficient to make damage become zero. Or "sucks it up".

Lots of acronyms -- "BB, AGL, TLT, AA, AZ, ..."

Ess-pite instead of Spite (so it's two syllables)

"Tank Card" -- any damage reduction card played by a hero

Cherry-man instead of Chairman

We tend to say "Burn it with fire!" a lot when Ra is in play.

Fanatic is hard to describe -- the first syllable is like a sports fan. "FAN -a-tick". 

Whenever we can choose damage type, it's always "banana damage".

I pretty much use basic shorthand - Misty for Nightmist, Expat for Expatriette, Argent for the Adept, Visi for Visionary (firmly referring to the old Web hosting service…I wonder if that's still around), Legs for Legacy (I imagine Wraith calling him this a lot for multiple reasons), Zero for Absolute Zero, Omnix (not Omni-Ecks, but Om-nicks) for Omnitron-X, Tachy for Tachyon (I kind of want to call her Tacky instead, in honor of Unity, but Tachy is just easier to type), and I get altogether too much pleasure out of referring to Fanatic as Fanny.

Rabit's standards for language amuse me greatly.  And alas, I'll have to steal the Wasteland/Countdown bit…

To be clear, what amused me wasn't the fact that you censored at all (I get that this is a thing moderators do - I still think they shouldn't, but I also think all sorts of things shouldn't be as they are, and am persistently shouted down by everyone from Common Sense up to the Laws of Physics).  Rather, it was that you censored the F-word but left "asshole" intact.

Back to topic, do other people use "plink" to refer to doing one target one point of damage?

It dates back, as far as I know, to Tim the sorcerer in another Card Game that will remain nameless but man I wish I had some of the Moxes I traded away back in the beginning.

I use "ping."

I use plink to denote 1 or 2 points of damage, especially enemies who kill you by that method. If we were to formalize it, though, plink = 1 damage is good :D

That's always been "dink" for our group - I have no recollection of why we chose the word, but the background is the same as you described.

And yeah, we still use it.

I think "plink" is used for one damage, but "ping" or "dink" are used for hitting an immune target, or the damage being reduced to 0. As in "The attack pings off [target]"

My "ping" came from the Prodigal Sorcerer from MtG:

Yeah, unfortunately I started playing Magic before there was any kind of Internet standardization of things like that. We called what Tim (AKA Prodigal Sorcerer) did a "dink" because it was funny (to us). Later, when the Magic community on the Internet started smoothing out all the differences in how we played, we just never stopped using "dink".

Hmmmn (getting off topic), so it sounds like the Tri-Solvent Vat does Pling-Dink-Ping damage. :)

I use NOPE (TF2 Engineer voice) to refer to damage that is blocked completely, either by immunity, meat shields, standard DR, what have you.

I never heard "plink" before I came onto this forum, but now I'm inclined toward using it.  Although I make a lot of other assorted sounds during actual RL play (not on every hit, but not restricted to just 1 damage hits either; it can befor anything that hits anything for any amount, depending on my mood) - "SPANG!" is my favorite, but "dunc-!" and "bung!" also appear now and again.

I use "plink" for (usually) one point of damage just because...erm...I do. I can't really remember why that word. I've probably just seen it in many of the various computer games I've played over the last two-and-a-half-ish decades.

My RPG club is starting to refer to the game as "Centipedes" fairly regularly now, due to me saying it occasionally (and my Centipedes of the Multiverse t-shirt, freshly printed for the London game day).

In fact one guy asked last week if we could play 100 Legs. I'm ashamed to say this confused me for at least 15 seconds.

Well, taking "Legs" as a particular character's nickname, there could technically be three (four, when the new promo card comes out) Legs in Sentinels ;). Actual centipedes, I believe, don't have a hundred legs - this came up on QI. I think the nearest was about 96 or something. Similarly millipedes don't have a thousand legs ;).

Yeah, Millipede is the real misnomer, they have an average of 200 legs (4 per body segment).  But centipedes often have as "little" as 30 legs.

Cantipedes can have anything from under 20 to over 300 legs, but they are always in odd numbers of pairs.

It wouldn't really have worked if he'd referred to "anywhere between 20 to 300-ish but stereotypically a hundred legs which isn't true as far as we know". that would have confused me for at least 17 seconds, resulting in a net loss of more than 2 seconds because "100 legs" is significantly quicker to say. ;)

That sounded interesting, so I looked it up. According to Wikipedia, that tidbit about an odd number of pairs is only true for epimorphs, which is some but not all centipedes. It seems like it includes all centipedes with a large number of legs, however, which if correct would then mean that there are no centipedes with exactly 100 legs.

(It also seems to depend on exactly what you call a "leg". I just learned about the forcipules; are they "legs" or not?)

All-American Tempest - Tempest: Sacrifice (because the lighthouse in the background looks like the American flag is running off of Tempest's name).

Tempest's corpse - incapped Tempest can prevent all damage dealt to heroes of one type.

Although I forgot all about the movie until I started googling for centipede images to create the artwork for the shirt. I added a -human search term pretty damn quickly.

I call Absolute Zero “Absolute Ziggy” (because reasons)
Due to an amusing typo, I now call Bunker “Bunler”
I call Slamara “The enemy of the people”
Miss Information is “AAAAAAAARGH”
Due to a weird ad, The Ennead are now “The Nead”
I too say Legs, AA, and That Card.
