Just a heads up that Vengeance playtesting materials were released to playtesters yesterday.
If you are supposed to be a playtester and are not seeing the playtesting forums, contact GTG.
If you are a playtester and used to finding new posts by clicking on 'New & Updated Topics', please be aware that the playtester forums have not always been displayed when clicking on that link, so you may need to manually navigate to them.

I have three questions for the playtesters:
Is it awesome?
Is it really awesome?
Is it [redacted]?

I am having a lot of fun with Vengeance. I've played just one game so far, but really enjoyed it, despite losing.

How did you playtest? (Or how does anyone playtest, really.) Was it [redacted] x5 vs. [redacted] in [redacted], or did you mix in older stuff? I mean, I guess you have to do both, but what do you do first?

All new stuff all at once. It doesn't make for the greatest playtesting notes, but it's too tempting to not try out everything immediately!

[Redacted] I imagine I'll be mostly trying a couple of new elements a game so that I can isolate how they bnehave. Then on how they interact.
(Careful about what we're giving away, here - the new way the villains play is not public knowledge.)
It's definitely interesting and enjoyable! I'm excited about playing the new set and seeing how it evolves. Great stuff!
Personally, I'm trying to focus on a couple new things in each game, but I'm not playing the new villains versus the new heroes. It's easier to focus on just new heroes against a known villain or just new villains against known heroes.
Oh, and the environments! OMG the environments!!! I have to say ao%8p^@23y^4 ta@o&!tgf*hn 9%7h62ql^t g$q

I like to isolate playtesting to using a single new deck at a time, though I'll often break that to throw in a new env deck along with another new deck.

I tend to mix and match. I may play only one new deck, sometimes I will play multiple new decks. It just depends on my mood or if I wanna try out a combo.
I like taking on GloomWeaver for the simple fact he doesn't destroy stuff so it makes it that much easier to see how their ongoing/equipment work with one another.

Since this is a standalone there should be some play testing with only this set after seeing how everything interacts with the current stuff. I envy you guys, but you better be as close to sick of this game as you can get before its released. =D
Thank you all for your time!

Agreed. Definitely something to strive for, cause I see this standalone expansion a good gateway set for my friend. Cause everyone is always intimiated by number of cards when I bring out my full set.
Side note: Some thing I believe Playtesters do not mention a lot. Is there is a lot of cutting involved.

There is so much truth to this. For the perks of playtesting…oh man there are some big drawbacks haha. But perks + drawbacks = balanced character, so I guess I am doing something right.

This thread is making me sad that I didn't pay for playtesting. Although, I still can't justify paying for something that I've gotten to do for free for other companies.
I'll just have to keep an eye on it and hope I see something accidently posted that will tide me over until Vengence and Greatest Legacy arrive at my doorstop.

Because we fans are spoilt rotten by GtG. Because there had been mini expansions to accompany the past 2 expansions, so we (I) are very much looking forward to more mini expansions to broaden the lore and simply just more Sentinels goodness. =)

l5r (legend of the five rings) has gone to a much more keyword environment of late. But they still print what the key word does on the card (ie)
Expendable(When an expendable card is destroyed, you may draw a card)
So ive never really been certain what the point was :P Other than I guess experienced players stop reading the italiziced text and just skim over it.
ive always liked the laid back atmopshere of Sentinels. Its not played competitively so you are free to make your own chocies on how things are played out - We go by details and use the rules form extensively, but thats cause we are competitve L5r players.

MTG also does textless cards. You get title and mana cost and nice picture.

The point of printing the keyword in bold and then printing the rules in italics is to make the ability easy to pick out when you're scanning a table full of cards (which is why I added names to all of the villain powers on my oversized cards). When an ability takes an entire sentence to describe, your brain typically needs to get through a few words of the sentence before it can make the mental leap to "oh, I know what this is. I can stop reading". With a keyword, your brain makes that leap much more quickly. And having the rules in italics makes it so that if your brain doesn't make the leap immediately, then that supporting text can help it along. It's the best of both worlds, in a lot of ways.
That quick scan is why I think SotM cards need to have, at the very least, the word "start" and "end" in bold on cards. That's one of the main things we do in the game, scan the cards on the table for start-of-turn and end-of-turn effects. We do it all the time, in every game, but the dense wording on the cards makes it more difficult to do than it should be.

Yes, that's exactly how I feel about it. Missing effects is so easy because the words that direct your attention to the fact that you need to do something now get lost in the text. Tokens solve the problem but add extra fiddliness (and can run out unless you have millions of them).

I know the Vs System did a similar thing, however they usually only put that in on the first set with the keyword. In later sets they would just use the keyword itself so I think it was to help players learn what it meant for the future.

Actually, the only thing stopping me from highlighting my cards is that I'm afraid something awful will happen like the ink smearing or staining through to the back. Does anybody know what sort of pen works on cards? I need to use several different colors to do what I have in mind for AA.

I used colored sharpies on mine because the highlighters were too faint. Red was pretty straight forward, but green required more even strokes and I tried a couple of different shades before I settled on one.
I had one or two mishaps that I was able to correct by wiping the card clean with a little alcohol on a napkin before the ink dried.
Your cards look great and it completely solves one of the major problems of playing the game. One of you lucky play testers need to pass this on to the powers that be. What a simple fix!

I've been playing with the set of expansions that arrived before the full game did (i'm still waiting for Fed Ex) and using Spiff's 3D tokens. As soon as I did, it occured to me than a colored [S] or [E] icon could have bee printed on the cards to the left of the Card Type text to do the same thing and elimitate the need to use tokens, highlighter, etc.
