Woohoo! Looking beautiful.
The new smilies are… Different.
Not sure how I feel about that, yet, but we'll live.
They also don't appear to be working?
The editor looks pretty good and will take some getting used to. I'm creating this with the "Filtered HTML" Text format to see how that does.
(I'm going to try posting with the other formats, now…)
It's an exciting, new world!
(Using BBCode for this one.)
I currently don’t see the Admin/Moderator forums. I’m assuming those were brought across?
Trying out an emoticon to see if it works:
Hmm… Nope.
And now plain text…
Just noticed that it makes our first line into the subject if we don’t provide one.
Is there anything available to help us figure out how to set up our accounts? For example, where do we set up our forum signatures?
Ok, the subject line issues are resolved - they'll all default to the subject of the primary topic.
Yeah, the smileys are weird. Not sure about all that. This is just pre-day-1 stuff for now. We need to start making a list of things we like, things we don't like, and things we don't see at all.
It's a new forum, everyone! We can make it do what we want, we just have to figure out what that is! I know change is hard, but it's worth it!
Besides, look at that gorgeous site! Great job, Joel!
Seriously, yes - the site is awesome! Many thanks, Joel! :-D
I'm noticing the new forum is recognizing the migrated posts as "unread", it doesn't seem to be consistent in how it's setting them to "read", and I don't have (or can't find!) a way to just tell it to count all posts as read. Apologies that I don't have more time tonight to play with it - will look at it more closely tomorrow night...
Yes, this is an unfortunate side effect of the migration of the posts. They all look "unread" to everyone.
To mark all posts as read: Use the "Forum Tools" drop-down at the bottom of each of the topic list pages (e.g. http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.com/forums/general-discussion). Choose "Mark all topics Read". So if you want to mark EVERYTHING as read, then you'd need to do this at most about a dozen times.
Looks like the pagination is a bit ugly, but at least its wrapping properly now.
I've adjusted the fonts a bit, so at least the list pages look a bit better. And, for some reason, the icons on the forum list page looked nothing at all like those on the topics list page. So I added new ones.
*UPDATE* Oh! You can hit that same drop-down on the list of all forums, too. That's convenient. :) Look for the drop-down at the bottom of: http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.com/forum
Regarding the BBcode vs. Filtered text formats… Filtered gets you the WYSIWYG editor and more of a view of how your post will look. Personally, that’s pretty much all I use.
The smileys, yes, I know. You do get attached to them
. Whether they appear or not is up for discussion. I’ll keep looking around.
–Joel
UPDATE: Aug 19 2012 You can now use BBCode in the “Filtered Text” inside the WYSIWYG editor. There should be no need to switch.
Oh, Christopher, I figured out what the Facebook frame in the home page wasn't loading when we were looking at it: I wasn't logged into Facebook.
:-o (I generally stay logged out of FB so it's not tracking everything I do.
;-) ) When I am logged into FB, it loads as expected.
(The emoticons are still not loading for me. For example, there are two in the paragraph, above that are the images followed by text versions. The text versions appear as text and the images don't load at all. This is using the Filtered HTML format - might be something wrong with that?)
Thanks for the tips, Joel!
Drat. I just realized the time zone is all wonky. I think it's on UTC or something.
Phooey.
*UPDATED* I set my timezone in my user preferences. You should do the same. Everyone will now be reminded to set their time zone when logging in, otherwise the boards will all be in UTC (despite a global setting of US/Chicago as the time zone)
Good to know. Any way we can set the forum to Central time? If not, no worries. Just seems odd.
Things are shaping up!
Probably worth noting that anyone who had bookmarked greaterthangames.info is still seeing the old site (and denied forum access). If Adam hadn’t tweeted about his new blog post earlier today I never would have known about the shift.
Same here, about the change in URL. Also, pages are loading very slowly for me.
We will be moving that URL over and shutting down the old site tonight.
I don't think the icon that's supposed to indicate that a section has new posts is working properly, at least not for me. On the main forum page, I see a couple of sections that are showing the "nothing new" folder icon, but I can plainly see from the last-updated date/time that there is new stuff. And when I go into the section, I can see the new posts marked properly.
While we're on that subject, the thing that marks something as new is pretty subtle. My vote would be to make it bold, uppercase, and red. The new stuff is the only stuff I'm here to consume, and I'd rather that it jumped out of the page at me.
Maybe I'm just stupid for not finding it, and I read above that it's not registering them correctly, but how do I get the "view unread posts" functionality like we used to? Is that "View Active posts" now?
And how do we search the forum for a post or topic? I'm not seeing a search box.
EDIT: nevermind. Looks like that Search box at the top of the page searches the forum (I thought that was just for site-wide search or something).
RSS feed?
No idea if it's a bug or not but I don't appear to be able to delete my own posts.
And I can't seem to find a way to search the forums, am I just not looking in the right places or is it not here yet?
EDIT: I'm too stupid to live! It's at the very top of every page, I was just looking at the forum tools. AND that very question was asked in this self same thread!
How do you quote somebody else's post?
And I can't get underling to work, it appears in the quick post bit, and in the post when you are editing it, but not in the post itself (unless one you guys can see one of the words in this post underlined, then it's a problem on my end)
Nope - no underlines, Matchstickman. :-(
Also having issues finding how to quote another post. Looks like we can use Blockquote and copy and paste, thus:
How do you quote somebody else's post?
But that's kinda annoying when the editor doesn't show us the blockquote and the norm is a button on a post that automatically creates the blockquote for us. :-\
And yeah, also having all kinds of issues with the "New" functionality not working consistently.
2 more things to add to the list.
The front page of the forum is not updating to tell me when a section has new posts within it (if I visit a section it does have the little green note next to the individual topics). EDIT:Ah! It appears to notify of new topics but not new posts.
And I know this isn't and bug and that you're actually doing it to taunt me but if you click on unanswered topics from the front page it shows topics from all forums, even ones I do not have access to i.e. the Infernal Releics Playtesting forum (though I am denied access if I click on the topic header (as I should be)). This taunting is becoming unbearable!
This seems like the right place to post this kind of observation: In the Multiverse area, on the details of a hero, villain, or environment, clicking on the art fails to open the image.

Mrh? Are you talking about the portraits on the character pages e.g. the picture on the right of Absolute Zero http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.com/multiverse/heroes/absolute-zero
it opens for me. I'm using Chrome.
EDIT: So do the pics at the bottom, and they're awesome!
Hi everyone,
Keep talking in here, especially about the forums, but also about anything else you find. Things I see from quickly scanning this list:
Thanks for your feedback and patience.

*UPDATED* Oh, look, my bullets aren't indented properly! Sigh...
Keep in mind that the Forum can't tell you what's new if you are not logged in.
I don't see a way to tell the forums to keep me logged in. You don't mean that I have to re-login every day (or every couple of hours? how long does it keep you logged in?) do you? That will almost be a dealbreaker for me, since it would mean having to either memorize my purposefully obscure password or going back to 1Password every day, which is a pain. Please tell me you don't mean that.

Interesting. I'm on IE (at work), and having variable results. For example, AZ's image loads, but Ra's images do not. Bunker's top image doesn't load but his bottom image does. :-\ Fanatic's don't load at all, and neither do Citizen Dawn's or Insula Primalis. Baron Blade's "Mad Bomber Blade" image loads but the other two don't. (Sorry I don't have time to go through all of them. :-( )
But yeah, I love that we can see the enlarged images! :-D Great stuff!

I haven't had to re-login at all. I logged into the site Sunday at home and Yesterday here at work. When I got home last night, I was still logged in. When I got to work this morning, I was still logged in. As long as the upper-right corner says "My account", we should be logged in, I think?
If we have cookies blocked, though, that might prevent the site from seeing us as logged in? Just a guess - haven't tried it. :-\
I'll add a vote that new posts in old topics (I believe once you get into the forum, they are noted as updated instead of new) do not show up on the forum as having new posts. After waiting a few hours refreshing the main forum page, I saw no new posts. But when I clicked on a forum, I notices many updated topics with new posts. It would be nice if there was an indicator on the main page for when a forum has new posts to existing topics (I believe someone mentioned that it does indicate if a brand new topic is created). That, and I need my Alt + S for Save, and Alt + P for Preview (though I don't use the latter too much).
Oh, and, appearently, there is no warning if one is posting to a topic which has had new posts added while one was making the post. As, while writing this, Rabit had not yet made his post, yet when I posted this, his post was before me, and there was no warning that he made a post while I was still writing this.
I had to re-login this morning, but I'll keep an eye on it to see if I need to do it again.
Regardless, the icons are definitely not showing me when there's something new. I come to the main Forum page, dejectedly see that there's nothing new, but then notice that a few last-updated dates seem suspiciously recent, and when I click into a section I see that indeed there is new stuff. No bueno.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but the new forum design seems a lot more clunky for mobile users. The text and links are much smaller, the interesting parts of the page are larger, and I have also noticed the ‘new post’ buttons to be less often correct, to parrot Spiff. I really liked the thematic feel to the old forum too… is that eventually going to return?
Shouldn't be much more than updating a CSS to mostly get it to look like the original (at least enough to end any complaints).
The search function currently returns results to which I do not have access (e.g. the playtester forum) and there's no real way to narrow down a search (e.g. by forum or poster), just a flat word search.
To expand on matchstickman's post, it looks like the search function returns results to which I don't have access, but when I click on them, it correctly tells me I'm not authorized to view them. But of course, I should never even see the topic titles in the search results.
Just noticed it doesn't show how many views a topic has, they are all stuck at 0.

The site is set to keep you logged in for three weeks inside a single browser session. If you are switching computers/devices that would have an effect on that. :) also, if you clear cookies when quitting your browser, or use incognito browsing, that would also affect it. Generally, I stay logged in if I visit the site once a day and never log out.

I haven't done extensive testing on IE (which version are you using?) There's no reason that one image should load when another doesn't. Is this consistent? If you can get a chance before i do to review, let me know what you find. (PM Me)

I just had an idea on what might be going on, but generally as I've gone to the forums a couple of times today, the "folder-star" icon appears in the main forum list to show me that there is new activity there. See the screenshot on the right.
Reply to dragonlordged: I can say that there are plans for a more mobile-friendly site. Please bear with us while we continue to work on things. Also, yes, there is more to do in terms of CSS and styling the forums. Right now, this is the best we had out of the box, so to speak, but we can do pretty much whatever we want.. eventually. :)
Reply to everyone: Thanks for your input. We'll take a look at the search and see if we can properly exclude things. (I guess they guys who wrote the forum code didn't think that far ahead, eh?)
View statistics for a topic are something I will ultimately look into. I think it's an integration thing. I've made a setting that might affect it. Time will tell.
The Private Message feature is a bit hosed. The tab doesn't appear on your user profile page. I'm still investigating. (we admins can see the tab, but we're special and I am surprised that you aren't seeing it.)
Please keep in mind that some of these changes will take days or weeks to appear. Some features may never appear. We're trying to prioritize on what is most important and has the greatest impact. A forum migration is never fun (I think this is my 12th or so) and we know that the users get attached to how the system behaved before. We were not able to keep nor integrate the old forums into the new site, and we opted to migrate them entirely in order to consolidate things under one user login. (Messages, Forums, Playtesters, Orders, Newsletter Management, etc)
And lastly... the smileys are hideous. I will be looking for new ones. Y'all have any suggestions? :)

BOOOOM! The topic views are updating again. I'm going to bed now. (Maybe one day we'll update the total view counts, eh?)

Sorry to be a pain, Joel, but that's not what I'm seeing. (Can't speak for anyone else, of course!)
For example, this morning when I checked, the stars didn't show up on the left of the list and there were no indications of new posts. Because I knew when I last came onto the site, I checked the "Last Post" times and found a couple that were newer. When I went into those forums, I then saw links to new posts. (I'll try to take screenshots when next time I first go in - unless someone else beats me to it.)
It looks like it's working for you but not for (at least some of) us? :-\
Y'all have any suggestions?
Will have to go looking... I think it would be great to (eventually) get emoticons representative of Sentinels characters, though! :-D It would be great to have Unity or Haka as the big smile, Blade as the look of evil, and AZ as the sarcastic look... Although the latter might be hard to get for new-comers. ;-)
Well, I have screenshots, but because I'm at work and we can't attach anything to a post (looks like images have to be hosted someplace else to be included?), I can't get them up here. :-(
I'll try to get them up when I'm home, but timing is not likely - I'm off to GenCon stuff as soon as I'm out of here... :-\ Sorry, Joel!
Any chance we'll get the ability to add attachments at some point?
I agree with Rabit, the icons are still not showing when there are new posts within existing topics within a section. One of the icons showed there was something new to me this morning, but that was because there was a completely new topic created in the section.
Same issue as Rabit and Spiff: only being notified of new threads, not new posts.
Also: a way to choose the default format for post entry would be nice.
Okay, here's a perfect example of what happened earlier today. The was a new thread created in General Discussion, then a new post was added to an existing thread in Events. Check out how that played out...

Interesting, huh?
Also, here's what happens when when I click on the images I can't get to load.

I can't tell what's in that little diamond. :-\
FYI: In the editor, these images were small - I have no idea why they didn't stay small after I saved it. :-(
The alt-text on the News page reads "Blade Blade" instead of "Baron Blade".
It looks like the problem with the icons not showing you when something's new can be gotten around by using the "New and Updated Topics" tab. That seems to show everything's that new without having to dig through the rest of the forums to find it. Not bad.
The "Active Topics" tab shows topic names from the Playtester forum and others that I don't have access to. Probably shouldn't even be displayed.
Ok, so perhaps it was showing only topics. I've made a change which I think will now include replies to new topics in the count of things that are new. Keep me posted on how it looks to you guys.
At the very least, I see the counts of new posts are way higher than they were before and they are in forums I rarely go to, so that seems to have had an effect.
On the other hand, it looks as if the "Mark All Forums Read" doesn't quite work. So maybe I'll fix that one day (after I fix all the other stuff that needs attention). (FWIW,I have to go and read each. individal. topic. to make it show up as not new. Which is painful when there are hundreds of things that haven't been read by me.)
When I came to the forum today I was happy to see the starred folders but then I looked at the count and saw that it had unread all the topics I had previously used the "mark all read" (from the front page). I don't know why the Events and Official Rulings topics are untouched, there were no posts in it that I had not read yesterday... but there was no posts in the Off Topic forum I had not either, and that's starred.

EDIT: the General Discussion board number did decrease by 4, the number of actual topics that had new replies I had not read since yesterday.
Well I can confirm that "mark all forums read" did work a few days ago, I used it to 'mark all read' the whole board! and I agree it's not working now (just tested it, from the forum main page and the individual sub-boards)... and I've just loooked, I have no unread topics in those folders so can't make the 'new' number decrease.

Here's a random page in the general folder showing that I don't have anything new to read, despite what the front page is telling me, and clicking on a previously read topic does not make the number go down (thinking it might just not be displaying the 'new' bit in the sub-board I spent a little time clicking on random threads, no change).
On the plus side Huzzah for the "Who's online" coming back!
Yes, I think there's a bug in the "mark all read" in that you'll find some remaining unread items if you go to the last page or two of topics. I saw this last night. I hit the "mark all read" a few times and nothing changed, so there's a bug in there somewhere. I'll probably make a copy of the database and see if I can poke at it this weekend.
Without knowing for sure, my best guess is that previously it was showing unread (or completely new) topics, but now that it's counting replies to topics, you get a better result.
On the plus side Huzzah for the "Who's online" coming back!
I thought I'd not announce that and give you the fun of discovering it yourself. :)
(Also, signatures are on the way, but they aren't as pretty as I'd like them to be when the appear.)
And look at that. Signatures are appearing. And they were migrated from the old site, with caveats, I'm sure. Edit your profile to change them.
Next up! Attachments...(And recovering those that were lost in the move)
You're doing a great job, keep it up! :)
Question: When I check the forum on my iPad then check it again on my Mac, things which I'd swear I've viewed look like they're not being marked as having been viewed. Is it the case that my "last viewed" information is being stored in cookies, which would be unique to each device? That would account for the unexpected behavior.
I think that I'll need to test this to see if I can reproduce it, but I can with a high degree of certainty that the cookies do not store the last viewed information. It's session-based.
I use my work PC throughout the week to check the forums here, but over the weekend, I use my home PC (or iPad). When I got into work this morning, I had to re-login to my PC. I guess a weeked of non-use on a particular device is too long to remain logged in? Can we please get the "keep me logged in" checkbox back so I don't have to dig out 1Password every Monday?
Would it be possible to move the "save" button to be closer to the text field of a new post than it is now? Currently, you have the text box you're typing a reply or new post into, then the "disable rich text" link, then a bunch of text you don't care about, then finally the button you actually want, the "save" button. It would be nicer if that button were directly below the text box, with the rest of the text and options below that.
Everytime I check the forums, it shows a huge number of unread items. When I actually go into the forum, itself, it is usually unchanged, with no new posts. The only way I can know if something new has been posted is if I remember the last time I logged onto the site and compare that to the newest post on each forum…
I had that problem too (it is now fixed), I think it is linked to the fact that the last post in almost every thread is marked as the day the forums swapped over, try looking on the last and second to last pages of the sections to see if there are unread threads, I'll bet that they are the ones both marked unread and with dates other than the great forum swap over!
Tried that - seems like they just won't go away.
I've been relying on the "Mark all topics read" tool, and it doesn't appear to be working. Otherwise, I have to go into every thread, and I have not been able to make time to do that.
Did a quick search and found some emoticon options. My suggestion is the IPB Style library, although I wouldn’t recommend including F*@$ You, cool shades smoking (as Smoking is better), Horse poops, Evil Witch, Surprised Witch, Crying, Evil Green, Evil (both of them), and Evil Grin.
If those don’t work, how about TPVGames library, although I wouldn’t recommend including Futuristic.
For some additional images, Boardoo has some entertaining options available to add to the libraries above, such as a psychic, jester, ninja, and “the Wave”.
I've been ignoring the counts completely and it's been working great. I just use the "new and updated topics" tab that appears when you're at the baseline Forums level (not sure why those tabs aren't always visible). In fact, that tab is what I've bookmarked as being the forums for me, since seeing the new and updated stuff is usually all I want to see.
Ooo... That's a great idea. I'll try that out. Thanks, Spiff!
That being said, I'd still like to have the "Mark all read" functionality actually be functional. I know it's on the to-do list, but every day I try in the hopes that it will magically work, but to no avail. :(
I'm still having trouble determining what's new and what's not.
When I select the tab for all new and updated posts, I get lots of new stuff, but not all of it. If, after looking at the topics that come up in the new and updated tab, I look at all of the forums, there's usually one or two that show (and actually have) new posts.
I've just taken the time to go into every subforum and to find every old topic that had erroneous new posts and to view them all. I now have no topics that say they have new posts. I was thinking that perhaps some of the new posts that didn't show up under the new and updates posts tab were because they were in forums that had uncleared old posts marked as new. We'll see.
I have patched (what I view as) the bug that was preventing all topics from being cleared via the "Mark All Topics Read" or "Mark All Forums Read" feature. I believe this to be working normally now. Feel free to use at will.
As a reminder, on the main forums page, there is a "Mark All Forums Read" in the drop-down at the bottom of the page that will hit every topic in every forum. Use with caution only when you think you're up to date.
Thanks for your patience. (I've already submitted this back to the maintainers of the code as a patch.)
Worked for me. Everything shows as read now.
Wish I could test it for you, but I've already gone through and manually viewed every topic.
Huzzah! Nice work!
Okay, I've been doing this for the past few days, and it's worked great.
Until I went to the forum home page and discovered that the Moderator Discussion forum isn't included in the New and Updated Topics. ![]()
So, for most of us, it's a great solution. For moderators, not so much. Now that the errors with new posts appear to have been resolved, though, I'll go back to using the forum home page.
The Moderator Discussion is intentionally left out of the New and Updated Topics, otherwise, everyone would be able to see them.
Working on making them only show up for Moderators/Admins.
Sounds great - thanks!
FYI: The Twitter link on the front page doesn't appear to work with Firefox. It works great on IE (which is depressing
).
Hmmm, it works ok with Chrome. But that doesn't help with Firefox!
Sorry! I'll be heading out first thing tomorrow, but Joel is lurking about still... in the shadows...
I assume you're talking about the social media buttons at the bottom of the page? It seems to work just fine for me (in firefox, even) It's built in the same way as the other buttons, so I don't see why that one would be wonky… I'm out of ideas.
(What version of firefox are you using?)
Nope. The four boxes above that are "News", "Twitter", "Facebook", and "Mailing List", in order. The "Twitter" link in the rectangle opens to the SotM Twitter site when I use IE. On Firefox (v15), it doesn't do anything.
I showed it to Christopher last night, so he might be able to explain it better…
On FFX 15 (Mac and Winows) I see that the range of where you can click not quite covering the "TWITTER" graphic, but still a hot link. I'll adjust it a bit more, but it works for me. :)
Hah, Joel posted from his test account!
*goes back to running demos and dealing with all the PAXishness*
I have begun to rely on the "Show new/updated posts" link to see new posts. However, I've noticed that there were some new posts in Infernal Relics Playtesting forum, but it does not show up on the new/updated post list.
I saw that, too. My guess is that two things are going on: 1) The new/updated post list only shows things that are new if they are within a certain time range and 2) Something caused some old posts in some of the Forums to be listed as unread.
Actually, they were new to the Infernal Relics forums (just posted yesterday) but not showing up when I try to view all updated topics. I'm guessing they've just cut out all "restricted" topics from the list, without checking to see if the user has access to those topics or not. An error on the side of safety, for sure (definately better than playtesting and administrator topics showing for the typical user), but annoying none the less....
It seems we've lost the edit button for our posts.
The button to edit posts is still missing. Need that button back, please. Thanks.
I see some posts being editted. But where is that button?
Actually, they aren't - compare the posted timestamp with the edit timestamp, and they're the same.
For some reasons, original posts are showing as edited. (For example, I'm seeing your post as edited - don't know if you see it, though…)
I'm thinking you need an edit button now…
Also, still looking for an Alt+S for save (post) and Alt+P for Preview (though I usually never use preview).
Actually, I can edit posts, and so can the other moderators, I believe.
Well, don't flaunt it. We'll get jealous.
Yeah…
I don't know what you're talking about, TheJayMann.
(Thanks for pointing that out - fixed!)
All is back to normal. Sorry about that. There are two sets of permissions and when we got them set up properly for the moderators, it affected those of everyone else.
–Joel
In the last two days, the forum has been eating my formatting.
Usually the first line break or two work. But after that, everything gets jumbled together in one big paragraph. I've been making these posts from an ipad2, which is still using ios5. Before yesterday, my posts were working fine, yesterday and today they aren't.
phenom I edit the post in the WYSIWYG editor, it looks as I expect it to.
the post I made yesterday I went to go and try to fix at a desktop using Firefox, but just editing it and re saving it didn't fix the problem. I had to go in and manually add HTML paragraph breaks, which then produced ENORMOUS paragraph breaks, but at least it's readable.
whats going on here?
Well, would you look at that. My formatting is intact....
Tried a few things to see if I could reproduce the problem here, without success. So I'm not sure what's going on.
Wow!
We have an unreadable thread. It's the one just posted by Zembar called Mask of Matriarch... but because of the way the forum software creates thread links it's directing us to a previous thread titled Mask of the Matriarch (both threads use this link http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.com/forum/topic/mask-matriarch because of their respective thread titles).
Zembar if you're reading this the answer to at least part of your thread is no, the Mask does not trigger itself when it is played. I can't read beyond the first few lines (if there are any more, I know not)
EDIT: Thanks for fixing that instance CajunJoel!
Hi,
I just posted something on the rules forum and when click on it I get redirected to another older topic that happened to have the same subject.
(in the mean time, i'll repost with a different title)
Thanks
Not to be a nitpicker (even though I am being a nitpicker with this post), you posted more or less the exact same thing the person just above you posted.
Yeah, but it's useful for us to know it's happened again; the more it happens, the more important it is to get it resolved.
Two methods I can think of to solve this.
First would be to switch from a tagline url to a unique id (either large number, or UUID (though the latter is probably overkill)). Of course, that removes the tagline feature that if you can remember topic name, you can easily get to the topic simply by providing it's name, as well as when it appears as a link in another page, the potential visitors can easily get a preview of what the link will take them to.
The second solution would be to add a validator on posting a new topic that will compare the would be tagline with what taglines currently exist, in order to guarrentee it's uniqueness, and, if not unique, spit the new topic post back out saying that the topic cannot be posted as another topic with the same (or similar) already exists.
The second solution is probably best, since it wouldn't invalidate all current links to existing posts.
Sorry about the "repeated" post, I hadn't noticed it. ![]()
Glad it can be useful though and sorry for creating this confusion.
It is the case that Drupal should always be making a unique URL alias for every post. There may be a bug here that is new. In the meantime, all future posts will have their ID number appended to the URL to keep it perfectly unique. This may be an adequate long-term solution. Thanks for the input.

Many thanks, cajunjoel!
Unfortunately, the Backlash Field thread created earlier is still broken - how can we fix that?
Also, just discovered some odd alignment issues with the numbered list formatting - see here for an example.
I've been wondering...would it be possible to add an option to change the date display to the English way round? I keep getting confused seeing dates as month/day/year instead of day/month/year ;).
Yeah, having worked for international companies from here in the USA, I really get frustrated dealing with the various ways formatting is handled. sigh I wish we would use something that's consistently internationally recognizable for English speaking audiences, like "10-Nov-2012" - because if that's done as either 10/11/2012 or 11/10/2012, it's still going to be confusing for someone.
Or, how about the international ISO date format of 2012-11-10? I often prefer this as it works much closer to how numbers work (adding a small unit (a day) modifies the right most number, and adding a large unit (a year) modifies the left most number, much like adding a small number modifies the right most part of the number, and adding a large number modifies the left most part of the number). Just saying.
But when saying the date out loud, we (us English peeps) tend to say "It's the eleventh of October, 2012", or 11/10/12. Swapping the different-sized units around by putting the smallest one (day) in the middle just seems weird ;). That's why I was asking whether the option to change it could be added, as opposed to asking that it just be changed across the whole forum. Then people could go into their account preferences andchoose whichever they liked best ;).
Not a forum issue, but a website issue ...
On the News page, for the most recent news item, which announces the winner of the Create a Villain Contest, there have been a number of comments. All of these comments show up on the first page, but below them there is a choice to go to a second page of comments. Upon choosing the second page, one sees the same comments, but can now choose to go to the first page of comments.
Got it. Thanks.
This is in my queue, Andy. Thanks.
Re: Date Formats
I am still investigating this and it's on my list of things to complete in the near future. Certain things are not necessarily behaving when it comes to date formats. Additionally, it's worth noting that the user profile info on the left side of all posts is really a different module than the forum post itself, so I have to get them all to play nicely, although it looks as if the user info uses YYYY-MM-DD HH:NN format.
No concern or problem, but it would be nice to have some option to quickly find the threads I posted in. Or maybe even a subscription option.
This is a funny one, but when I log into the forums, the number of new posts in each forum is around 2x the actual amount. The number of new topics is right though. Weirder still is after I read all the new posts, the forums will correctly say that there aren't any new posts.
That happens to me too. Perhaps it is logging post edits, which aren't especially obvious?
I noticed it as well. After being away from the forums for a week or so I came back to the Shattered Timelines forum saying something like 500 total posts, 650 new posts.
Not that big a deal, but I wish I could still do the glowy lettering... that was fun.
I made a new post, then once it was created could see that someone else had made a new post with the same name at the same time. So I deleted mine, which seems to have deleted both of them. That should be fixed.
As soon as I saw Spiff's thread was created before mine, I deleted mine. Sooooo more like forum member error than forum error. XD
I made one..saw yours and then deleted it. Then I saw someone else made one also called The Scholar...I wonder if they too saw yours and simply also deleted it.
Oh...that was the other one. Ha all 3 of us made one and deleted it. Now who's going to make it again? I'll hold off...one of you go for it.
Yes, as a general note, User A cannot delete User B's posts, unless User A is a moderator or admin. And though the posts may have the same title, they will have different URLs.
Is there any chance we could get some kind of indicator on the forum pages for when we have unread private messages?
Right now, the only ways to find out are to go to My Account>Messages or to check your email. It would be nice if somewhere on the header you could see if you had any unread PMs.
Even something simple-ish like a text link at the top so you had "My Account" "Messages (X)" "Logout". The X value for messages could be the number of unread messages in your inbox,
I second that. The only way I know to check PMs is when I get the email notification, but that's sent to my home address which doesn't help much if I get a PM in the middle of the work day.
Lol, I've been repeatedly forgetting to make a post about this issue for about two weeks now :P. Other forums I'm in give a small pop-up window containing a "new PM" notification when you access the forum's homepage, but also have a "You have X new messages" link at the top of the page. Another has the "Private Message" link change colour when you have a message waiting.
Anything which is noticeable from the forum homepage would be cool, really :).
Can we have the title of the thread on the top of every page?
Currently, the title is only shown on page 1.
Ooh, something else I thought of - make user post-counts visible in the left-hand panel under their avatars. Just 'cause I like to randomly glance across at mine and go "Hey wow, I've made X posts...damn didn't know I'd posted that often.." :D. Also, it lets people make showy-off announcements when they hit numbers that are in any way significant ("Woo 1000 posts!"). And stuff. :D
Did the search feature break? I searched for "spiff accessories" because I'd made an update to one of my files, and it said it couldn't find the topic. It couldn't find "accessories", "ranger", or anything else.
While we're on the subject, would it be possible to get my accessories topic stickied? It seems to be helpful to enough people, and that way they (and I) wouldn't have to go digging for it every time something changes.
Yeah, it just broke.
I searched for Fright Train earlier today and got many results, now, nothing.
What these forums need is a >G tracker. Everytime one of the >G Games posts, a page will be updated with a link to that post - like the Blue trackers on the Blizzard forums or the Red Trackers on the League of Legend forums.
I've had the unread posts feature behave strangely since the changeover. The forum select page will say there are unread posts or threads, but when I look at the forum, nothing is new. (or less than what the forum select page told me).
Mostly I'm browsing on an iPad 2 running iOS 5. I also use pc's, with either Opera, Firefox, or Chrome, but I can't recall if I've seen the problem on any of those.
It was doing that to me before, on occasion. I just ignored it.
Btw, I've noticed we seem to be getting the occasional spam-looking post in the "Off-Topic" section since the update...
Which changeover? If you mean going back a few months, I used to have that problem and it turned out that some older posts had been marked as new and I had to dig through and find them. Then it went away. I haven't seen that since the changeover just a few days ago.
Yeah. Annoying. Joel made a change to the captcha module to try to stop it, but at least one more has popped up since.
Arenson - it's been happening just since the forums went from orange to blue (I think). It could have been happening before I suppose, but I didn't notice.
not a big deal, really, but if Joel doesn't know that it still happens on occasion, he can't fix it.
Is the deluge of spam more to do with the change of name in the URL? Anything with "game" in the title is going to end up on all kind of target lists for spambots. For similar reasons my productivity at work has just increased...
... and following on from this, the spam is appearing on the home page in the forum topics panel. Joel might want to consider disabling Off Topic from feeding into that information if possible as it gives an odd first impression of the site when the spam does sneak through! (well, odder I guess than some of the real thread titles)
