Are you excited! Be excited! Also, check out the Kickstarter!

Not only is it a good way to support us and get to be a part of the action, it also has bits of hidden information on the expansion itself!

The EXTRA REDICULOUS looks really awesome. If only I had a few Gs to spend on something like that…

While looking down the list, I’m assuming that any category chosen gives just what that one category specifies, and adding an extra $30 gets us a copy of the expansion?

Does that means an alternate Wraith, playtesting, and a copy of the Rook City would be $25+$90+$30 = $145?

Yes, you can add levels together like that. HOWEVER, we added some magical fancy rewards that combine shipping on things (so SotM + RC + legacy promo + wraith promo = $85, etc)

Also, we are really really excited about somebody buying the “Just Ridiculous” or “Extra Ridiculous” pledge levels, as that would be fun for us too! I also really hope someone buys the Ultimate Storage Solution; Christopher and I have plans to work with a master woodworker to make the boxes and they should be gorgeous.

Wait, so for $20 I can get the Legacy card, or for $25 I can get the Wraith card, but if I want both cards, that will cost $45 (plus $30 for the expansion plus $10 for shipping)? This is for an expansion that’s expected to cost less than the original game costs, right?

That’s just what the reward levels are in the kickstarter. To quote:

PLEDGE $45 OR MORE
20 BACKERS • Limited Reward (80 of 100 remaining)
ON PATROL - A copy of the Rook City expansion, the America’s Youngest Legacy promo card, and the new Wraith promo card. Also, a big “Thank you!â€

Ah, I see it now. It’s much easier to read when pasted in a post than it is in that narrow column at the source. Though, it appears playtester is $90 by itself, or at least $500 combined with anything else.

Thanks, that’s better. I guess I misunderstood what a Kickstarter was all about. I thought it was just a way to entice people to put up the money for an expansion before it’s actually been made (meaning, you get people’s $30 now instead of next year). I didn’t realize it was also a way to get people to pay way more than they normally would for an expansion, in order to get some extra stuff. :stuck_out_tongue:

And what if I already have the Young Legacy and just want the expansion plus Wraith promo? Then I have to pledge $25+30=$55, which turns out to be more than Rook City+Young Legacy+Wraith promo=$45… I could save $10 and get a duplicate Young Legacy, but I’d rather that duplicate copy go to someone who don’t already have it.

The options are rather limiting…

And I so liked this game.

Save 10 bucks, get the Young Legacy, and then offer to send it to someone on the site. Problem solved! You save cash, you do a good deed, someone else gets free stuff, and you support >G, all in one go.

This is just straight up awesome in all the ways. I, for one, will not question any of this pricing, and simply pledge the $45 offer. No need to question the details. I’m sure what it means is that if I go ahead and donate $45 now, I’ll get the two promo cards (someone can have my Newest Legacy, I got that at Gen Con) and a copy of the Rook City expansion. That’s what it says in the description, so I’m happy. Lemme just find $45 really quick and I’ll send it your way. Come on guys, we’ve got 44 days left, and we’re just $1000 away from being halfway there (at the time this is posted)! We can do this!

Oh, and I saw the part that mentions >G will release character art and bios for every $2000 we pledge. We’re over $4000 already. I can already hear those details being posted! With a goal of $12,000 and six characters in the expansion, if we make it all the way, we’ll know EVERYTHING. Get to it people!

Pretty sure this is how it works to just get the expansion and wraith promo. You select the “Defender of the Night” option, then add $5 for a total of $30. If this is wrong then please correct me. Making sure before I pledge any since I’m limited on how much I can spend cause of no current job and I already have the Legacy prmo card.

It states for each $30 added to this level. So, $25, then add $30 more to that, for $55, otherwise something like ROOK CITY RENEGADE or ULTIMATE STORAGE SOLUTION wouldn’t make much sense.

Not that I’m demanding it, but I’m secretly hoping the arts and bios will be of characters we haven’t seen anything of yet (like characters other than Plague Rat or the masked guy). Just sayin’. It’d be very thoughtful of you.

Also, when the rewards part says the other promo card is an alternate version of The Wraith, is it actually still Maia Montgomery, or a whole different Wraith? Or… when you say “alternate Wraith”… Could you possibly mean an alternate universe version of The Wraith?! Perhaps a Wraith from the same universe as the so-called “Red Legacy” or that evil version of The Visionary that’s inside the current one’s head?! Could it be the first alternate universe hero we get?

Just go ahead and tell me if I’m wrong about that last part, if you don’t mind. I’d rather know it’s not the alternate universe coming into play and not getting all excited. Not to say I’m not completely pumped about this!

You’ve still got to remember there is six other Heroes on the base game, I say six becuase the double villians seem like Tachyon’s nemesis do to her incapacitated side. There may even be a chance Plague Rat isn’t the nemesis of anyone at all.

Expatriette will most definitely be the first Hero I try out with how awesome she looks. Now all were missing is the appearance of the double villians, and the actual description of Jack Donovan. Oh yeah the second environment aswell.

So yeah, Expatriette is everything I hoped for in Dawn’s nemesis. She’s just awesome. I cannot wait for this.
Also, my friends and I came up with the theory that the two environments will be a high-end district and low-end district of Rook City; two villains and one hero for each district. Say, for the ones that have been revealed, Plague Rat and Mr. Fixer are in the low-end district, like slums and backalleys, while Matriarch and Expatriette will operate in the high-end, big city part of Rook City. More on this theory once the other villains are revealed.

Wait… Dear God… Expatriette is Citizen Dawn’s SISTER. OH. MY. GOD. I kid you not. Both of their last names are Cohen. That’s not a coincidence. This just blew my mind…

So, based on the new villain, The Chairman, I’m thinking my theory of the environments being the high-class end of Rook City and the low-class end. The Matriarch and Chairman will operate in the high-class end, with Plague Rat and the last one in the low-class end.

The Chairman kinda confuses me at this point. Since there is a villian that is accompanied by someone, and so The Chairman and Jack Donovan are both known. So does one of them has to work with someone else. Or maybe they are the two that work together? So very confusion. Hopefully the questions will get answered soon because now I am just plain out confused.

I’m thinking Captain Lamb must be just an underling of The Chairman. If he’s a Chessmaster type, running all the organized crime in the city, he’s surely got moles in the police force.

EDIT: Found it!

So the two that will work together will count as one villain, not two, [EDIT: Or one villain and some sort of new sidekick/super-minion/right-hand-woman mechanic that we don’t yet know of!] and it’s the one we know nothing about, except that it’ll be two females (or children?). Probably Tachyon’s nemeses, since you can see a duo of villains with ice and wind powers(?) on the back of her card.

Really… I just saw D-Day’s latest contest on the BGG main page. Their kickstarter has more backers and more funds. Where is the publicity for Rook City!!!

All of us here most likely already pledged, what we need now is more people who are new to the game and very likely to pledge the $85 level.

(Plus, I am really stretching my neck long yearning for the alternate Baron Blade. Can we have more publicity or bring the alternate Baron Blade down a few levels? :D)

Even after all the explanations, I’m still a little confused by the pledge levels.

What I would like is:
-To be included in the playtesting
-A copy of the Rook City expansion when it is available
-Wraith Promo Card
-Legacy Promo Card

However, the only way I can see to do this would be to pledge at both the $75 and $45 levels.
So for $120 I recieve
-Playtesting
-Two copies of Rook City
-Two copies of Wrath Promo
-One copy of Legacy Promo

Is this correct?

That’s a little more than I would like. Is there a way to get in on the playtesting and still recieve just one copy of the game and one of each promo card?

While I love the updates and the videos that have come out…it does seem like where they are getting posted is only going to prior fans and those already kickstarting. Yes its still growing and it will continue to do so, but I must agree that it isn’t really being publicized that great. How can we get these great updates, stretch rewards, videos, etc out to those who haven’t seen in yet?

Contests? Designer diaries on BGG? Kickstarter expansion specific ads on BGG? I’ve suggested similar things before as I’ve seen these be effective, but there must be other great ideas out there? What do others think? What have you seen be effective advertising we can use to push Rook City?

I just checked out the video about the nemeses, and I was actually a little surprised with the truth, but after a second it does make sense. Mr. Fixer being an extremely low-income person and The Chairman being himself, obviously. And I’m assuming that “successful cousin” mentioned in Matriarch’s bio is Tachyon. Though I’m yet to find a connection between Spite and Wraith… More on that later.

Really? I would expect the opposite: Wraith would be the “successful cousin” to Matriarch. And Tachyon, a famous scientist, would be a likely target for someone who is essentially the result/victim of an unethical science experiment.

RO

I was thinking Wraith and Matriarch too, but since Tachyon is successful and it was probably earned success it does make a bit more sense. Where Wraith was made CEO by her parents of a already successful company.

Now I have two thoughts why Wraith and Spite could be nemesis’ and the first one is prior or during Wraith’s becoming CEO if Montgomery Industries they were funding the project at Pike Laboratories so Spite is seeking them to extract a little bit of revenge in the form of an old fashion beatdown.

My second theory is that Spite is just a really big villian in Rook City, and seeing as Wraith lives in Rook City it means that those two will most definately be butting heads. I mean it’s not like all Heroes and Villians have to have a linked backround in order to be a nemesis with one and other.

The years passed and Maia grew into an exceptional young woman. She blazed through her education, graduating high school with top honors by the age of 15. I don’t think Matriarch is actually even that old. A hero that comes to mind that comes into mind that had white hair while in costume is Black Cat, but when not in costume she was a blonde. So there is the chance that even Matriarch’s white hair is just part of the costume.

I’m with Ronway - comic book art is always overly generous to the looks of characters, but The Matriarch looks very young.

Besides Dr. Stinson is 38 years old according to the website - my cousins have a 20 year age spread, so Matriarch could be anywhere from 18 to 58 easily.

When I was talking with Chris last weekend about the expansion, I did forget to ask him to confirm one other deduction I had. I’m not sure if anyone else has already had this confirmed, or I’m just stating the obvious, but have we all accepted that Expatriette and Dawn are sisters? Both of them have the last name Cohen, and in a world like this, that’s not just a coincidence. Can anyone back me up?

But but but… See what I mean when I said I should give up on guessing? But I refuse to believe they just so happen to have the same last name. Coincidences like this don’t just happen in a story like SotM. They’re related… I just don’t know how. Maybe they’re not sisters, but they’re related – twin sisters, step-sisters, mother/daughter, aunt/niece, cousins, clones from alternate universes, whatever it may be. I may wrong 90% of the time, but I’m about to grab that 10%.

I’m kinda thinking Veet is right about Dawn being Expatriette’s mother, considering the fact that Dawn is 48 and age marks a visible and Expatriette does have a youthfulness look to her. But I do wonder if they aware of any kind of relation.

One theory I had rattling around my head is that if it is true that Dawn is the mother, it may be possible that Expatriette appeared to be one of the “normals” at an early age and was probably neglected by Dawn because of it. And after having a Daughter that seemed to be useless may have been what pushed her into the hiding in Insula Primalis. Expatriette may of then been taken into some organization that rained women how to be assassins or mercenaries of some sort. Then years later Dawn and Expatriette meet on a bridge in which Dawn reveals that she is her mother!!! Dun dun dunnnn. It’s just a thought though… Not sure about Expatriette’s eye though, that may be tied in somehow.

EV

Alright, I’ll go with the mother/daughter relationship. I think that’s more likely than the whole alternate universe thing – it’d be strange to see something like that when the expansion doesn’t have anything else that’s alternate universe related. But Dawn’s 48? I guess I should have checked her age, but she looks younger than that.

Okay, final answer: Dawn Cohen had a daughter, Amanda Cohen. For some reason, Amanda didn’t want to become/wasn’t allowed to be a Citizen of the Sun. Probably because she doesn’t have superpowers, it seems. So Amanda leaves/sent away by Dawn, goes and does her own thing. Fast forward, Dawn is 48. Amanda is in her mid-20s, and bouncing around Rook City. And here we are…

Oh, and there’s a psychic in Expatriette’s preview. Could that be Spite? He looks psychic-ish.

And I have got this other notion, that Operative’s name is a bit familiar. I don’t know where, but I thought I’d seen a similar last name… I’m probably wrong on that again.

But there’s still one more mystery. The biggest. Who is The Chairman? Chris, your little hints you gave me last weekend have just been bothering me. If you have eluded to him before, it must have been only once, because I can’t even come up with a wrong guess! But I suppose the fun is in the mystery. If I knew the answer, this wouldn’t be nearly as fun…

But I refuse to guess about The Chairman. I’ve literally got nothing. But I’ll heed your instructions and not flip him until the game is over. Just be sure to package the expansion so that The Chairman is noticeable enough that I don’t accidentally see the other side!

I honestly don’t put a lot of stock into the apparent relative ages of ANYONE in most comics. Because of the way comics aging works, you end up with younger characters growing up (Say Robin becoming Nightwing), while others (Batman) apparently staying the same age or aging FAR less quickly.

I file it, along with many other comic ridiculosities, under my “Because Comics” heading.

Expatriette could totally use guns as a mode of transportation. If you’ve every played a game with a rocket launcher, you know all she has to do is get a bazooka, point it at the ground, jump into the air, and then fire. The explosion will propel her into the air, across the city! It’s the rocket jump!

But speaking of transportation, I really, really want Mr. Fixer to have a car that he uses. I don’t care how he uses it, but I’ll be happy if we get a card for Mr. Fixer’s old-school hotrod.

Nice Kickstarter update!

I have no business background, so this might be a noob-ish question.

I noticed some empty card spaces on the printing paper. Will it cost any additional money to print some cards on those spaces? Otherwise the printing paper goes to wastage anyway. If it won’t cost anything extra, why not print some extra promo cards or errata cards in those empty spaces? Optimize the space usage so to speak.

PA
Paul
2012-01-05 18:13 UTC
#140

These are just what printing companies call “digital proofs” (even though, as you can plainly see, they are not digital at all but are actual physical pieces of paper). What they mean though by “digital” is that they are printed out using a digital printing process (like a normal computer printer) just so that we can make sure all of the colors look good, and that they figured out how many of each card to print, and what card goes with what card back, etc. When they do the actual printing, it will probably be laid out differently, and it will be printed in even higher quality by fancy professional printers that are evidently not digital at all (in the somewhat strange parlance of printing companies).

However, in summary, there still is some extra space, which this time we are mostly using to print the Wraith promo card!

WR
WriterRyan
2012-01-05 19:52 UTC
#141

By the way, the fancy professional printers Paul is talking about are probably around 100 feet long and have thousands of moving parts that are very, very precisely crafted and fitted. When I was still in lithographing (printing in layman’s terms), they were installing a new printing press, and it was expressly forbidden to walk within like 10 feet of the thing since the concrete was still drying and even a millimeter’s difference could throw the whole thing off.

Yeah, it turned out that printing the game in China and paying for shipping from Shanghai was so much cheaper than printing the game in Texas that we could afford a much higher quality box, higher quality cardstock and rule book paper, as well as a plastic insert. On top of that, the Chinese printer had much better customer service. The only outstanding question is what their QC is like, though it would not be hard for it to be better than that of the original printer, given the number of people who have mentioned missing or damaged cards on this forum.

Got my copy of Rook City earlier today aswell. Sadly I never heard a knock or anything at my door so I didn’t know it had arrived until I was leaving, which before leaving I quickly opened it up and was greeted by the prints, which looked very nice. After I got home I did a little bit more exploring of what was inside, and boy these HP trackers are really something. Played one game with the Rook City so far with my two younger sisters. Mr. Fixer, Expatriette, and Ra against Spite in Rook City. The artwork is just as awesome as before, and not to mention the flavor text makes the cards that much better. We did however end up losing our match against Spite, being the severe pain in the rear that he is. So nice finally playing it with cards rather than crudely cut out pieces of paper.

Edit: Also wanted to say that it was also great to see my name listed in the Playtesters section of the rulebook, was one of the first things I checked into after opening the box up. Nothing like having my name spread around the world and having people look at it and think “I wonder who these guys are?” man, just feels my heart with joy knowing someone out there can read my name over and over again.

Probably too much to ask at this point of time, but this coming from someone who enjoys SoTM a lot, when are we going to see the new detailed character bios on the homepage?!?!?!?!? :stuck_out_tongue:

I just got my copy today. The prints are beautiful, the villains are menacing, and the heroes are AWESOME! It is taking all of my self control to finish work before I really tear into things.

Got to play a quick game with my daughter. Wraith & Expatriette went against Baron Blade in Rook City. Things did not go well for us. But we enjoyed every minute of it. I need to come up with a better way to use the HP trackers though. We tried using glass beads, but the beads were too big. Can’t wait to play more!!!

Woohoo! Got 'em! ;D

The cards are actually a lot thicker than I expected. I really like the weight of the new cards. Looking forward to playing with them!

Speaking of this, it would be interesting to know who’s faces ended up on what cards, especially any of the other forum goers. So anyone who paid for their face please share.

I myself was intrigued by having my face on a card, but I don’t have the funds to do so. Maybe next time I suppose.

Looking forward to using the new cards tonight!

Quick question for the PTB: Are there plans to put the Rook City rule book up in the Downloads area? Cuz that would be really shiny - I like having multiple copies of the book available, just in case, and I prefer to preserve the originals. (Especially when I get people to sign them… ;))

Ha! Well played, my friend. Well played. 8)

I am one of the six guys in the ‘Enforcers’ group (all of us on the card are gaming friends - we get together twice a year for a weekend of gaming craziness, not counting the occasional convention like Gen Con or Origins). Specifically, the intimidating-looking one with the shiny glasses in back (of course, we’re all intimidating-looking - we’re ENFORCERS!). We were excited to have our whole gaming group in the shot.

Our wives liked them as well. “Look, honey! The guys and I are scary-looking thugs!” “Cool! But you’re still taking out the trash!” “But enforcers don’t have to take out the trash! We…well, we do ‘take out the trash’ in a sense…or rather, we are the trash, and the heroes have to take us out. Ah, darn it. I’ll go get the trash bin…”

One of the guys in the group (Charles Dryden), the small guy in the front, got a ‘Special Thanks’ in the rule book. Very exciting!

Maybe I’ll change my handle here to…

Just got my copy. Makes me really happy. My friends and I are going to do a run through of it, with the two heroes plus Tachyon and Wraith. Thank you, >G for making my day. I am literally doing nothing productive today.

According to FedEx, my copy has been sitting in the St. Louis processing center since it arrived lastFriday. Hoping it hasn’t fallen off a conveyor belt and gotten lost in the system. More likely, it’s sitting in the “it’s OK to make these boxes wait” pile since they don’t expect it to reach me in California until Friday. :frowning:

I’ve been pouring over the cards since I got the expansion this weekend. Wonderful artwork, great flavor bits at the bottom. Got to play a bit this afternoon during lunch. I’d rather have played all day

And hey, I’ve already found Plague Rat’s nemesis! Chrono-Ranger! He’s on the shadowy attack card in Plague Rat’s deck! I look forward to that expansion too. But Rook City will keep me occupied until then!

I’m the ‘small guy in front’ on the Enforcers card. And yes I got a special ‘Thank You’ in the rule book, because I’m ‘special.’ I also got a signed, artist Adam Rebottaro sketch of my character with The Chairman and a bunch of other stuff including a handwritten note from Christopher on my invoice to tell the other Enforcers “Hi” from him. So “Hi from Christopher, Tom, Chris, Jon, Jason, and Doug!”

Got mine yesterday! Really loving the new card weight. (Though one of my Spite cards was creased across the middle, which was disappointing).

I’m the “Innocent Bystander” and behind Spite’s hand in “Forced Entry,” by the way.

EDIT: Also, can the red-suited Commie guy (from “Scum and Villainy”) please become more important later? I’m a sucker for McCarthy-era Cold War propaganda comics.

Got my copy last night, love the quality of the box and the new art is just fun!

Can I just say Spite is just sick and wrong? I haven’t even played him yet, but his theme and his cards, just looking at them, I’m going oh, that’s just not right.

Surep, just realized that Cap’n Commie is actually already on Legacy’s “Lead From the Front” card, and there’s a whole mess of 'em. Still, I think he/they would be a cool addition to the game, even if just as a random mook.

Also, are we going to see Sheriff FancyHat (presumably Plague Rat’s nemesis, and on one of his cards) in Time & Space?

Time & Space is the next expansion, and based on some of the flavor text in Plague Rat’s deck, it looks like that guy’s name is “The Chrono-Ranger”. I’m not sure why a time-traveling cowboy has a grudge against Plague Rat, but we’ll find out I suppose.

Oh, man! Lamb vindaloo sounds awesome! We should go to the Indian place by your house Sunday morning.

Er, got sidetracked there. I can tell you that Time and Space is NOT the next expansion, but I’ll stop there. Hmmm, what else? You folks have caught on to a lot of things, but there’s a good amount of stuff that’s managed to sneak past you . . . for now. Any questions that I can handily dodge?

Indy’s is a pretty decent restaurant. Back when my parents had a bit more money than they do now, they used to go weekly; they became regulars.

Time & Space isn’t next? I must have had terrible hearing back at Gen Con; I thought that’s what I heard. But I’m glad we’ve actually caught some things this time around. And I have questions you can dodge! Why are Wraith and Spite nemeses? When will Omnitron’s nemesis show up? Those are the only questions I’ve got. But wait, if there are still things we’ve missed, then the investigation must continue! You know, eventually.

Do you remember any other expansion ideas that were discussed at Gen Con? There is one that was mentioned that comes before Time and Space… don’t worry. We won’t let you agonize about it for too long. grin

Answers!

The Wraith and Spite are nemesis, as Rook City is The Wraith’s hometown, and Spite is the single greatest threat to the people of Rook City.

Omnitron’s nemesis will be in an expansion not published in 2012.

No, other than T&S I don’t remember any mention of other expansions, so I’m back in the dark. If you did mention it, I either just didn’t hear, or just don’t remember.

But wow, you guys must have really planned ahead if you’ve already got some of the THIRD expansion in mind. I know the process of planning out decks probably takes a while, but do the characters just come easy to you? Well, you’d probably have to think ahead anyways, in a case like Omnitron’s nemesis, who we haven’t seen yet (and I guess won’t be around for a while), but you’ve still given him a symbol.

Oh, so no personal vendetta between Spite and Wraith? I had assumed there was some past event that linked them or something, like Jack Donovan had been one of the guys who killed her boyfriend years before he became Spite.

We have actually planned out enough interwoven expansions (and related characters and storylines) to last us for a number of years. We actually planned out much of the world of Sentinels Comics before we even released the core game. As a consequence, minor clues about future characters / storylines can be found in the art and flavor text of published games (to say nothing of nemesis icons).

Well, awesome, that’s pretty amazing. The clues are probably too subtle for me to really catch, so I’ll just wait and see the clues when I’ve already got the answers. I mean, there’s nothing that’s really jumped out at me up to this point. But I look forward to the rest of the story.
