So who do you think is the best hero in the game and why?
I think it is The Wraith because of Impromtu Invention and throwing knives + micro targeting computer.

I think it’s probably Visionary. Visionary just seems to have the exact right answer for exactly everything.

She’s the only character that can take a shot at controlling the villain deck (and can do a number on Environments too). She can bury tough or annoying villain cards, take things out of the villain trash to prevent ressurection (in the case of Voss or Omnitron, even vs Blade it has its uses to stop him from blowing up the world, and against Dawn it kicks, because you can keep her from flipping to her immunity side).

Visionary can buff or debuff with Twist the Ether. She can’t heal, but she can set up force fields to tank 5 damage or become immune to damage if things get really hairy. She’s great at helping everybody draw cards.

And just when you thought her main weakness was dealing damage… you run into Wrest the Mind. It’s all about target selection, a T-rex or Kraken is a good choice. We had some fun with her swinging a train around and hitting people with it every turn (plummeting monorail) but by far the greatest damage dealt was by Wresting an Electro-pulse explosive. Only a 3 player game, but redirected 45 damage back to Omnitron, instantly killing him at that point.

And honestly, Visionary is even good dead, able to retrieve good cards from the trash, or get rid of annoying ongoing cards or environments.

Even though it is hard to just pick one, I think I will say Bunker. Once you Heavy Plating, go into Recharge Mode and you’ll take no to little damage from enemies and environment cards. It will then you can stock your hand with your entire deck.

Afterwards you can slap down Upgrade Mode, allowing you to play two cards and still drawing one. Depending on who you are facing will play into the decision on when to play Omni-Cannon, such as a villian with plenty of cards to destroy equipment cards you may want to hold off on playing it so that way Omnicannon doesn’t get destroyed along with all the cards underneath. Or wait to more the end and lay it out and just do a weaker initial damage.

After you’ve got Omni-Cannon, one or two maintenance Units, Ammo Drop, Flak Cannon, Grenade Launcher, and maybe a Auxiliary Power Source, you then play Turrent Mode. You may not be able to play cards or draw, but you can now use two powers and a plus one to damage. Initial attack using Grenade Launcher to eliminate any minions that may be lurking about (especially against Voss) then use Omni-Cannon to cause massive (if charged) damage to the Villian card.

Next turn you can decide whether you want to use the Auxiliary Power Sources to grant an additional power or draw three additional cards. Ammo Drop wil be there to help you keep your hand full of cards since you can no longer draw regularly. Grenade Launcher for minions that may be around, if none then you can use both Omni-Cannon and Flak Cannon to do damage to the Villian. Also you can elect to use Maintenance Unit to restore your health by two if need be, or if you have two out you can be restored by four. Lastly if ever needed you can use Bunker’s power on his character card to draw another card if you needed one.

And thus is why Bunker is awesome, because of his high damage, damage reduction, and very well self healing.

My opinion is that the “best” hero is largely situational. Visionary’s obviously a great controller, Fanatic has enormous single-target damage, Legacy’s team-leading abilities are peerless. Each character has their own strengths and weaknesses, and I really have fun finding different combinations.

I don’t know about “best” but my favorites are Tachyon (shocking, I know! :P) and The Wraith. I like the flavor for both of them and I really like Tachyon’s play style. Same reason I like things like Village and Laboratory and Festival and such in Dominion. I like drawing and playing cards and seeing how they all stack and interact with each other.

I’d agree that “best” tends to be situational, but in the situation where equipment is not being destroyed, Absolute Zero can deal consistent, massive damage while having so much healing as to be nearly invincible. Good times

Thats really strange to me, I find Zero to be by far, the weakest hero. There is only one villan (Voss) with no cards that instantly destroy equipment and/or ongoing cards, although the Dreadnaught can destroy one per turn. Anyway, maybe there’s something amazing I’m missing about Zero, but if so I can’t figure out what.

He is the most complicated character in the set, and mainly requires damaging himself to do damage to enemies and healing to himself, but if you get the right combination out, he is virtually indestructible.

I recently had a situation with Absolute Zero where I was doing 15 damage per turn to the villain and healing myself for just as much every round…

Yeah I love Absolute Zero. He is my favorite hero not even close. I have had him to the point where he was gaining like 5 life and dealing a ton of damage a turn but I think it takes him too long to get to that point for me to consider him the best hero. I think the weakest hero is Haka. I think it is because I don’t know how to play him correctly but to me he has been the weakest so far.

I had the same trouble with Haka (and The Wraith) when I first started playing the game. However, I found that they both have awesome stuff they can do; in the case of Haka, he is a fantastic tank (not only does he have high HP, he can heal) and he is a super effective board clearer (Savage Mana and Rampage are both great cards for this)

Absolute Zero, Tachyon, and Fanatic are my favorite to play in the current set, though I suspect that the two new heroes from the next expansion will be on that list once it comes out

I must be playing a different game than you guys…

Zero’s problem is yeah, it takes way too long to get his stuff out. There’s no way he can play more than 1 card a turn, and to be at all effective he needs both his modules, plus Thermal Shockwave, and for him to get to the degree you’re talking about, he also will need cryo chamber and focused apertures.

Even when he is at that point, there is so much that can screw him. Cramped Quarters Combat, for one, is terrible. Ok, suddenly Zero is worse than useless. Or Devestating Aroura, really anything that destroys all his equipment and/or ongoing cards and he’s back to starting from scratch, with a minimum 5 more turns to go before he can really do anything. Even Ra’s normally amazing Imbue Fire is REALLY frusterating when playing with zero, because it prevents him from healing.

He also can’t deal damage from the start. Which I hate. First turn vs omnitron: electro-pulse explosive. You need everyone to deal damage, NOW. Zero can’t help you, all he can do is sit there and cheer on everybody else, which inevitably ends with like 10-15 lightning damage to the face. He’s bad against omnitron because of this and because of the tendency for Omnitron to destroy stuff. He’s bad against blade because of Elemental redistrubutors (which you really want to avoid killing if possible, so he doesn’t blow up the world). Admittedly he might be pretty good against Voss, who 1. doesnt destroy stuff and 2. has a tendency to deal fire and cold damage. He’s allright against dawn, but not particularly amazing.

Even with his ultimate set-up, I don’t think he’s any better than wraith with her best stuff, or bunker with his best stuff, or Ra or Tempest or Legacy with their best stuff…

on a side note: Haka is pretty amazing. With multiple Dominions out he can draw so many cards, along with his card draw from Haka of SomethingorOther, and then you just heal, prevent damage, or deal damage as you see fit. Savage Mana is great, so is Mere and Tahia (?). Rampage is also a great card, especially with Savage Mana.

It is really about getting Onboard Module Installation, Modular Realignment, Isothermic Transducer, and Null-point Calibration Unit. OMI should always be played as it gets you moving a little faster, Modular realignment recovers once Dawn or Blade wipe your stuff, and the two equipment cards turn you into an Ice God.

I like playing games where someone else has chosen to play Absolute Zero - I think his mechanics are cool and he can do awesome consistent damage, but eh, just not my preferred play style.

What I like about SotM is that I can play different styles depending on my mood. Haka is my favorite tank, The Wraith is my favorite equipment heavy character, and then Tachyon, Legacy and and The Visionary are also fun.

I almost never play Bunker, Ra, Fanatic or Tempest - not because I don’t like them, but usually the friends I’m playing with have a strong preference to play them and there are so many other choices.

Who do you guys think is the best combination of heroes? I think Legacy Wraith Bunker and Tempest work pretty well together. Legacy pumps Wraith’s and Tempest’s attacks up which allows them to destroy enemy forces and Bunker is there for a one shot with Omni Cannon.

I like the combo of Absolute Zero and Ra for sheer silliness - Ra need never attack the villain!

I feel bad not liking Ra that much because I love his backstory and he deals consistent damage, I just find his play style too simple (while I am glad that there is character for people who like that style of game play, just as I find Absolute Zero’s mechanic too piddly to be fun for me, but I’m glad he’s there).

I always am a huge fan of Legacy/Wraith teamup battles. They’re both fun characters to me and they work well together.

I agree, Legacy and Wraith work really well together. And you get that, Superman/Batman team up feel.

Legacy/ Ra + anybody is pretty awesome. If you can get out inspiring prenence, galvanize, and imbue fire, +3 damage to everything, a good third might be Tempest to Squall for mass damage or target fire with Localized Hurricane or something.

Tempest/Zero has also intrigued me because Tempest’s armor can let him change his elemental damage type to fire or cold and cast Lightning Slash or similar spells on Zero to either heal him or charge his weapons.

My favorite two to play are Absolute Zero and Tachyon, as they have some ridiculous mechanics that can lead into fantastic combinations.

My favorite two in terms of flavor/art/story are Fanatic and Haka. Because they’re awesome.

There is no such thing as a “best hero” in the game. This was a design principle of the game. However! I am happy to see that people are picking their “best hero” based on what they most enjoy playing. That is absolutely what this game is based on. The 10 different heroes have 10 different sets of mechanics, and when someone finds their “favorite” they are quick to deem it “best”. And that is awesome.

I don’t know if I could ever pick a favorite hero. From collaborating with Christopher on their stories and helping flesh out the universe of the game, I’ve fallen for almost all of the characters. Usually whenever I’ve really enjoyed one, it was because it was the most recent one that I’d helped work on.

However, if I really had to choose, I’d go with Absolute Zero, Tempest, and Haka. I can’t narrow down further than that though.

I think you all did a great job at making not just one hero better than all the others and making each hero feel unique. I love how different teams work better and different than others too. I think one of the more fun aspects of the game is finding out which heroes work well together.

Absolute Zero is by far my favorite hero, both in terms of play style and flavor. Once you get all of his equipment out, he’s basically indestructible. True, there are a few cards in each villain deck that can severely hamper his abilities, but there are plenty of cards in the game that can cancel those or mitigate their effects, either at the time or shortly thereafter. And on top of that, he just looks amazing!

If you’re talking about the game I was playing with you, you healed, like, 20-some damage in 1 round once!

After the game I played last night, I may have to switch my favorite hero to Tachyon, who dropped Omnitron from 40 to 1 HP in one turn, allowing him to be finished off by our Police Backup. Novas are always fun.

Yeah I really like Tachyon for flavor reasons, gameplay reasons, and because she can do that.

A friend and I played a “Danger Room” scenario (That is, we shuffled the hero avatar cards together and dealt them out into two random teams of five, and chose a location to fight in, then played against each other.) I had Ra, Haka, Fanatic, Tachyon and Wraith, and I found Wraith to be the most enduring member of my team, even though my friend still managed to knock my team out. I did take down three of his team, Legacy, Bunker and Absolute Zero, before I fell.

So, I would say that Wraith is way up there, surviving several rounds by herself against three heroes.

But then I played Visionary on a team against Omnitron once and did a really nasty number on him with Wrest the Mind…

I’ve been loving playing with Wraith and Absolute Zero the most. Legacy can be a lot of fun too, but I can’t decide whether I like being Paul or Pauline more.

Of my friends I have gotten to play with me, one plays almost exclusively Tachyon, another loves the sheer survivability of Absolute Zero’s healing, and the Tachyon player’s wife loves Ra for his blunt methods (If it moves, burn it).

Chris, I can’t thank JJ and Sarah enough for saying “Hey, let’s go see our college friend’s booth.” Keep up the great work and you can be sure I’ll be grabbing whatever expansions come out.

I’ve got to say, I’m a big fan of playing Young Legacy. She’s packs quite a punch with her innate power and I believe that she’s carried the heroes on the games I’ve played with her.

I totally concur. It’s so fascinating how much that deck is changed with just one power.

Newest Legacy is a favorite here too. That power was just what was needed for a very well rounded hero, who still has plenty of party support in her deck. Now she can rely on her power instead of one-shots for direct damage, leaving her free to use her play for the turn on buffing, while not sacrificing damage ability to do it.

Interestingly enough, nothing changed for my login. I am actually not even able to sign in as “Citizen Jodie”. I’ve just been busy and only am able to check back on the forums every-once-in-a-while. Also, I wouldn’t be deterred if, somehow my name got broken on this forum. I love the game and want to see the community it builds up around itself.
