GtG Cryptogram

Let's have some fun by solving a cryptogram based on GtG. A cryptogram is a text where each letter is exchanged for a different letter, so "A" could be "B". By figuring out what each letter is, you will figure out the passage. In this cryptogram, only letter are exhanged with other letter. Non-letters (e.g. punctions marks, numbers, etc.) are correct, and should be left alone.

Each day, after the first, it the puzzle isn't solved yet, I will reveal one letter that hasn't already been revealed. Good luck!

If a hero does not take damage from an effect, such as Pushing the Limits, Solar Flare, etc.  Does the card remain in play? No, they have to take the damage listed on the card.  If Tachyon does not recieve at least 2 damage from Pushing the Limits, than it is destroyed. So if she is immune, redirected it, or reduced it to 1 damage, the card card has not fulfilled the condition and thus is destroyed.  This applies to Solar Flare as well, so no Imbued Fire + Flesh of the Sun God tricks. However the damage type can be anything, just as long as the amount of damage listed is taken, the card will remain.

It took about 50 minutes for me to solve, I'm surprised no one solved it faster, maybe I'm the only cryptogram fan here. I really want to play Covert Action now too.

I did use one outside tool: http://rumkin.com/tools/cipher/frequency.php the most frequent letter I tried as E once that was added there were a lot of 3 letter words ending in E, THE, that gave me T and H and then in snowballed from there.

There were some tricky parts, 3 of the letters were substituted with themselves and then "card card" was throwing me off until I realized it was probably a typo.

Did you use some application to create it?

I copied the text from the forum, and I used a puzzle solver add on to google sheets, but randomized the letters myself (should have checked To make sre they actually changed).

Pydro, not sure if you know or if it would affect your choice, but generally cryptograms are easier when they are longer.

Try to limit them to 1 or 2 lines max, also if you're lifting from the website try limiting the entries with numbers in.

I'm not particularly good at decrypting these, but if I can find the same three letter combination a few times, that's almost certainly 'the' or 'and'. With this many words the rest tends to fall in place after that.

In my defence I'm very tired and my brain doesn't work properly, but still.

Short version: you find words you recognize, and that will give you the key to any unfound letters in the word, which should make some other words possible to identify - repeat until you can read it entirely.

The hard part is identifying words at the beginning, when you don't have any letters filled in yet.  For that, the most common tricks are to look for 'a', 'and', and 'the'.  Any one-letter word is going to be 'a' or 'I', and any three-letter word that occurs frequently is probably 'and' or 'the'.  That can help you get your first couple of letters.  Double letters and other patterns can make other clues, as can apostrophes.

After that, I guessed that 'erg' which repeated several times translated to 'the'.  This gave me:

Notice the 'The_' which I bolded.  That is most likely 'They' or 'Then'.  I guessed it was 'then' (actually, the possiblity that it could be 'they' didn't occur to me until just now), and that gave me 'n's:

The 'ent_ne_' that I bolded began with a capital letter.  I managed to guess that it was 'Sentinels'.  That gave me 's', 'i', and 'l':

Was this any harder than usual?  I deliberately picked something without any 'a's, 'and's or 'the's.

The "I" and initial "I'm" got me rolling pretty quickly. I tried to think of four-letter words that can follow "I'm" and settled on "here to" pretty quickly. That gave me enough letters to figure out "information" and "Tony", at which point, I knew where it came from.

These might be more difficult if they weren't all pulled from >G stuff (which can be recognized with incomplete information).

It was harder, but not hard. The contraction "I'm" is a bit of a giveaway. With that you have the letter 'm', which then means that the word 'me' is pretty straightforward. Now you've got the letter 'e' and that shows up in lots of places. The word 'here' was a pretty likely guess and then 'e' looked like either get or bet and either way I had the 't', which made 'to' easy and now I had "I'm here to _et ___orm_t_on", so 'get information' fell into place. All those os allso made "how do you want this to go" pretty obvious.  At that point I had three of the vowels and the rest was pretty straightforward. Revolver actually was a bit puzzling for a while.

Here we go.  I think I found a good one.

Nope.  that capital 'I' in 'Dark', which could easily be mistaken for an 'l' if you're not careful.

Anyways, here's my next one:

I got his name first, since those letter groups were obviously a name, and they fit a specific name in the Multiverse - that of my favorite character. 

Patterns make it easy, especially given all the surrounding punctuation. Words like “too,” or “it’s,” or phrases like “I am” stand out quickly. Only so many possibilities fit those combinations!

I always assume e is the most common letter, that will normally give me t an h as well, from there I look for puncuation (namely anything that has a ' in it) and words starting in th, from there I can usually make out most of the block and with most of them being from SotM or the website can figure it out.

Here's another type of cryptogram for people to get there heads around, this isn't a substitution cypher so lets have some fun.

Hmm … I thought this might be a playfair cipher, but since it starts with the same two letters, it can't be.

I'm not going that complex just yet.

Hmmm ... I've noticed that the Xs are evently spaced. Taking them out, I tried rearranging the letters as if each block were its own anagram, with words possibly being split between blocks. A few of them seem to converge into some words, but I'm not making much headway yet. I think the following words have a good chance of being in the result: Goals, delineate, reason, beyond, saving, ruin. Also, since it seems unlikely that the plaintext phrase has exactly enough chracters to make a set of even blocks, I'm guessing that the leading TTE and trailing ETT may be some sort of filler characters.

For some insight on the lingo of what they're talking about, read Simo n Singh's "The Code Book." It's a great history of code making and breaking from Queen Elizabeth's time up to the present day (as of when he wrote it). 

As much as I'm a proponent of audiobooks, this is one book where the various illustrations are key to understanding some of what he's saying.
