The tweet today from GtG indicates a new KS will be happening this week. I'm guessing it's related to a new game from Dice Hate Me or possibly Spirit Island.

I expected some speculation to occur not crickets.
No one expects the Spanish crickets!
What is their chief weapon?
Well... You won't hear from any playtesters, as they probably have some idea...
Wait! I know! It's that pengiun-tossing game I overheard folks talking about! Yeah, that's gotta be it...
Fair enough. I figured others might chime in on their ideas. Obviously Wednesday we will know for sure. Hopefully this goes better than Story Ward did.
A new worker placement beard trimming game?
I assume it's Top of the Tenth, for people who tie at Bottom of the Ninth.
Possibly related Christopher did post images of a game he was testing. It appears to be ship building. https://twitter.com/GTGChristopher/status/580807847228805120
Also possibly a deck-builder about building decks? Oof.
Edited to add - d'oh. Looks like that possibility was already raised in the comments on the picture itself. My bad.
I'm not the biggest fan when companies start kickstarter after kickstarter without finishing the ones they had before. Aren't we all still waiting for the maps and minions from the Tactics kickstarter? Where's the update on that? And to have a kickstarter RIGHT after Bottom of the 9th finishes seems a bit too pushy for me.
I like the products in the long run, but I did just pay for all of their "2015 preorders" that basically make no date promises at all, and are hardly even in playtesting (from what I've gathered). Now they want even MORE money upfront without a product to show for it yet? We shall see...
I thought there was an update from Paul on the maps, eveeything is on schedule.
I'd say GTG has proven they're quite good at juggling different projects. Also keep in mind, Bottom of the Ninth is a DHM game, and Tactics is a Sentinels Comics game, so I'd say it's okay if they're overlapping projects here and there.
I can understand concerns about designers/publishers overextending themselves, but if they're lining up things according to a grand schedule overall, I think it's logical to procure funding at the right time of each component's life cycle.
The maps and minions, I believe, have been said by Paul to be on target for the original date given in the Kickstarter which is one of the J months. If they're primarily waiting on manufacturing for those at this point, there's no reason not to work on designing something new in the meantime. With the recent merger, the company size has basically doubled, so they've got more personnel to work on different releases. If the Kickstarter doesn't go well (like Story Wars did not) then they can turn their efforts in another direction. If it does go well, then they've got something else to slot into their schedule.
Hardly in playtesting? The source of your information isn't very good.
Which is for the best. ![]()
One of the coolest things about the merger with Dice Hate Me is that we more than double our "back catalog" of games that are prepared, or nearly prepared, for publication. In fact, because of overlapping efficiencies, we are going to be able to release games much more efficiently than we would have if we had stayed two separate companies. For example, Chris Kirkman no longer has to deal with annoying logistical stuff (that's what I'm for), and can focus on developing and polishing games that he's had signed for a while now. We are nowhere near the point of being able to support the sort of release schedule maintained by big boardgame publishers like Fantasy Flight, but for the first time we are actually able to run multiple projects in the same phase simultaneously (so long as we do so very carefully).
For those of you keeping track at home, here is the status of current projects, as well as their originating "team":
1) Sentinel Tactics: Minions & Maps (GTG) - At the printer, on track for July delivery (on time from KS).
2) Compounded reprint + Geiger expansion (DHMG) - At the printer, on track for July delivery (several months late from KS).
3) Bottom of the Ninth (DHMG) - In post-production; at the printer within the month.
4) Villains of the Multiverse (GTG) - In playtesting; very roughly 50% complete.
5) Secret Wednesday KS (DHMG & GTG) - In playtesting; 90% complete. (A fun, easy trial run of a joint GTG+DHMG project!)
6) Spirit Island (GTG) - In playtesting; on track for KS in July.
7) Monster Truck Mayhem (DHMG) - In playtesting; on track for KS this summer.
8) New Bedford (DHMG) - In post-production; on track for KS re-launch this fall.
9) Sentinel Tactics: Broken City & For Profit (GTG) - In pre-production; on track for release this year.
Thanks Paul. Well that derails my theory for Spirit Island. I'm certainly curious what this new joint game is.
Well, it's a good job I'm here then! Other playtesters may turn their noses up, stay silent, refuse to answer your calls, but I hear you. And I will answer your question! The Wednesday Kickstarter is…
…a game.
Dang it, I was hoping they were raising money for an emu farm.
I'm still holding out for monkey tennis.
I'm hoping they are doing a kickstarter to raise money for all those ponies they promised in the early days.
Woah, Woah, Woah! A company called Greater than Games is going to make a game. Geez, thanks for the spoiler.
They could be making a grater. Or a zester, perhaps?
Will backers be updates and have an opprotunity to alter their shipping address before these head out?
I really don't pay attention to the calendar. Just realized Wednesday is April 1st
. Thus my hopes are dashed that any potential KS is anything but a ruse currently.
I would like to thank you for this update Paul. I love when we get to see a small glimpse of what is going on in greater than games and dice hate me. I for one would love to see more updates like this, especially with all the new projects coming out to keep track of. Even if it is just once or twice a month where you say the progress of everything you guys are working on, so we can keep track of in our heads and have somewhere to link to when people ask. Idk just being able to see this game is on track for this for this rough time or we r this far on play testing this game.
anyone else have an opinion on this?
I'm always in favour of transparency.
Same here. Keep us in the loop, for sure.
Though I won't say there's nothing to gain
in clearing things up now and then
it might make you blink
when I say that I think
that transparency's mostly a pane
Puns are a lot more annoying in limerick form!
I think the twitter pic is where chris is working on the redesign of the office. They must be using wooden floors.
I am glad that you guys found the post interesting! I'll try to post here a bit more often for you guys.
@defeateddust
Definitely!!
@Powerhound2000
The KS is definitely happening, and for real games! It is just…. entertainingly meta enough that the 1st is the perfect launch date
I hesitantly look forward to this "new game" on "kickstarter" tomorrow.
Maybe its a game featuring Guise? I mean its a game kicking off on the 1st of April. SO it has to be something like "Guise's Cool Game for Attractive People"
I would buy all of this game.
Hahaha! Well, I just remember that toward the start of Preorder-mania, playtesters were pretty surprised about it as they hadn't received kits to playtest yet. If anything, I guess I just overestimate how long it takes to actually DO said playtesting. But if playtesting is coming right along, then awesome!..you lucky punks!
Thanks for that awesome update, as well, Paul!
I'm interested to see what the kickstarter is tomorrow, of course. Still…a lot of upfront money so far. It's to a company I trust, with outstanding products and an outstanding community, and one I'm honestly willing to throw more money at, too. But we'll have to wait and see tomorrow as to whether or not this new product is worth giving even more.
Ha! Is this a reference to Strong Bad?! Telltale Games' adventure game?
@much0gust0
That is because, these days, anything that goes to the playtesters has already been run through a fairly thorough "internal alpha", and so is generally farther along than one might expect.
I often hold Evil Hat up as a model for transparency. I'd love to add you guys to that list.
Then again, Fred sets a pretty high standard on that front. (Look up one of his "State of the Hat" posts if you aren't familiar with them.)
Have you seen the "latest" interview with Fred Hicks where he briefly mentions Sentinels as an influence (along with a lot of other games) and says "I’m playing Sentinels of the Multiverse and Sentinels Tactics when I get the opportunity." ?
I hadn't, but I follow both Fred & Rob (Donoghue) on Twitter & know they're both big fans of Sentinels. Rob's the one who convinced me that the Grasshopper (age 9.5) would be able to handle the game, close to two years ago.
No.
…
very yes.
Besides, we know the other heroes use their powers for good. I like to think Guise uses his powers for Awesome.
A new Dice Hate Me game popped up for 3 days only.
Now that's a stretch goal!
I'm not sure which video is the most humorous. But yeah that stretch goal......
That stretch goal is just perfect
Asked for clarification in the KS comments, but for now - backed for four copies of Deck Building: The Deck Building Game (so that I can play it with up to 8 people at once) plus a copy of Unpub.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA !
Whew. Oh, man!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
Yeah, I’m wondering how many players it supports as well
That one video was enough to get me to back this project. Seriously.
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......
If I was rich, I'd probably drop a quarter million just to see them actually go through with that stretch goal. =P
That's just over 6 playtesters!
I love all the videos, and at some point I want a deck building game. But I can't afford it so, now that it funded, I can get it later
I have tested this game multiplayer (through the magical process I like to call failure to properly read the rulebook) and can attest that the multiplayer works. Well, except for when it goes to lunch for three hours.
You would buy 1 box for every 2 players.
You're all hilarious. That is all! :D
That's exactly what I was referring to…
I want a soundboard for when I play the board game with the damage sound effects, I wonder how far that stretch goal is.
I'm a little bit more interested in unpublished than I am deckbuilding. Not sure if I'm going to back this. It sounds awesome, but that thirty dollar shipping price is steep.
I really hope the stretch goal is a joke when it comes to the amount.
The Sentinels multiplayer stretch goal actually annoys me enough to NOT get in on this.
You know that's a joke, right? If you watch the video, it's obviously a joke. (And a hilarious one, too!)
I totally want the board game version.
i am not talking about the board game part. I am talking about multiplayer in the video game.
And if if its a joke I can't tell. I threw my back out and currently high on pain pills. Oh teaching is going to be fun today.
The joke is the board game. The multiplayer is coming to the video game eventually. And the joke is wonderful
Yeah, I thought the video joke about the boardgame of the computer game of the card game was pretty good!
Is there an alternate scoring system available for UnPub? It hits one of my black flags, the player judge who knows who they're awarding points to (which allows for meta-gaming or the perception of metagaming), but the gameplay itself sounds like it could be fun in the right company
morph147 & Pulseglazer: if the stretch goal is hit, SotM: Card Game: The Video Game: The Board Game will absolutely be made!
And online multiplayer will be made regardless, it has nothing to do with this kickstarter besides a bit of April fooling =)
…
whoosh
people on pain meds get a pass.
Can someone please pass the pain meds?
And I was totally not joking. I absolutely want a copy of SotM:TCG:TVG:TBG.
It wouldn’t be the first time someone didn’t back a >G Kickstarter due to a perceived aesthetic offense.
This campaign also made it known to me that there is twitter bot out there for Nappa from DBZ https://twitter.com/GTGChristopher/status/583415305197658112
Thank you for this. It made me laugh almost enough to get a twitter account.
With a blindfold and hidden roles, I am sure it would be a success.
no don't feel like getting into trouble and they are doing a crappy job
So what’s the expansion for Unpub gonna be? The Kickstarter Expansion?
It’ll add a new round, after pitching your game ideas you’ll have to do some push your luck style dice chucking, and doing various activities to gain more dice to roll, such as defaming the other player’s projects, making false promises, and miscommunicating anything and everything to your backers.
Or something like that.
So, something named after Peter Molyneux, then? ;)
HAH!
Also, let’s not forget about the “Deckbuilding: The Deck-Building Game” expansion, “The Gazebo”
All players have to work together throughout the game to build Chris a Gazebo. (Like the “Tower of Babel” expansion for “7 Wonders”). The more you contribute, the more points you get.
Shucks we didn't hit the SotM CG VG BG stretch goal. Guess Handelabra will just have to work on online multiplayer.
Our dreams have been shattered like so many timelines.
Maybe a separate kickstarter? Just make sure shipping to Europe is insanely expensive.
Derp - A Gazebo? Not the dreaded gazebo! Aargh, we are all doomed! :O
I think the next expansion should be bbq wzrs. After you build your deck, see who can throw the best backyard bbq party
The Kickstarter was mentioned on BoardGame Breakfast in a slightly critical fashion. I don't know why, I thought it was pretty obvious that it was a pair of games whose themes were somewhat of an in-joke. It's not like Cards Against Humanity's "Buy some BS" stunt (though I have to admit, that was funnier than the game itself...)
Don't even get me started…
Pushes button
Don't stop on my account, its one of a few annoying things I've spotted over the past few days…
I didn't think it was really critical; he didn't seem to have a point at all. Basically "hey this joke thing happened.. I don't get it.. what do you think?"
Here's the bit if anyone wants to jump to it, it's only about a minute long if that.
https://youtu.be/CcUvF28T8xs?list=PLOlRvTbmD6tInr4zwf1huyd5dBdR4kKSD&t=1535
Agreed, I don't think he quite understood that they weren't a "joke" but actual games. If I were see GTG, I'd see it as a win that he didn't leave it to Nick Meenachan to rip it in his KS segment given the amount of vitriol he's had towards the last few GtG KS efforts.
I think the problem is the "gaming review community" wants kickstarter to be either just fun silly stuff or grow up and make really great games all the time.
To me Kickstarter has 2 purposes outside of letting brand new entrants a place to go before they have capital to make it themselves.
1. The "let's throw this at the wall and see if it sticks" approach, which is what we saw from story wars and cosmic conflict, a product that they liked that they didn't know if other people would like enough to return on the investment.
2. The access/publicity approach, which is where the all Kickstarter game companies live, you pay a certain percentage to access a specific market, I think the "joke" games fit that side. The criticism I've read mostly says that people will back things that are jokes just because, and not really evaluate the games merits, they don't want the market supporting games like this.
I can see why it bothers them, because as review blogs they exist as part of a network designed to inform people about games before they buy them so that people buy games that they really want and make the market support better games.
The "Buy this today because it looks fun and is clever" approach is flying right in the face of that, especially when it is such a short run that it starts and ends before they can talk about whether it is a good game or not.
They criticize the unmade game bundle that is out there now for mostly the same reason, you have to buy the game before anyone can really evaluate the games.
I don't mind impulse buys. I've made some that flopped and others that were awesome.
Two clever and fun games with titles that make them a gag game is fine. They don't have to be great games, they aren't here to be great games, they are made to be good games that are fun and you play them because the joke is funny.
For people that take gaming and the gaming market seriously that is going to rub them the wrong way.
Nick has been fairly complementary towards the DHMG products though (and is a big fan of sentinels), so it might not have been a hammering. To be honest the reaction to Sentinels: Story Wars wasn't exactly positive on here so whilst he did let rip on that, he wasn't that distant in opinion to some of us.
The question of win/loss is irrelevant though, since the kickstarter was finished by the time the show was airing.
Well, I was more referring to him labeling GtG "Disappointment of the Year" on the Dice Tower year end audio podcast, panning Story Wars, Tactics (which he got the incap rules wrong for in his review and then criticized) and GSF in his segment. As someone who wasn't enthusiastic about Story Wars and actually likes Board Game Brawl, I still he think he was a bit over the line.
I'd agree that he was harsh, but it didn't feel like a position he was taking for dramatic effect, to me it felt like that was his genuine opinion. I've not managed to try GSF or Tactics yet, so I can't say how I feel about his opinions on those (even if getting a rule wrong isn't exactly edifying for a boardgame reviewer...)
Any of his hee-hawing over misunderstanding a >G product can't be as shameful and uninformative as Shut Up and Sit Down's piss poor review of Sentinels. Granted, I'm biased in favor of that particular title, but their criticisms seem to boil down to "This game has no dice, game board, or little wooden pieces...how can you even play a game that doesn't have that? It's not a game. Tee hee, The Wraith is a girl and The God of The Sun almost exclusively throws Fire damage-WHAT'S UP WITH THAT, AMIRITE!?"
I thought that review boiled down to co-op sucks, nothing you do matters because if you all win then no one wins!
They've.......they've never experienced losing then.... *sobs*
I reckon their problem is that they tried playing with EVERYTHING in their first play. Instead of starting against Baron Blade, they were talking about the huge amount of bookkeeping which makes me think it was something like Akash'Bhuta in Atlantis. The amount of cross-referencing and adding/subtracting is a legitimate flaw of the game for some people, and if people call it a black flag, I wouldn't argue with them (even though I'm ok with it). On the plus side, after watching their review, I now tend to introduce people to VIllians in a particular order (Blade, Voss, Omnitron) and avoid some of the more annoying environments (Atlantis, Mars) until they've got the hang of it
A problem with SU&SD is that they try too hard to be quirky/funny which can interfere with the reviews. The trouble is, there isn't exactly a huge and robust reviewer community as a lot of the bloggers/commentators are affiliated with games companies, and BGG reviewers are amateurs who often lack the skills to make reviews that you can attempt to second guess in terms of your own preferences. Heck, with the DiceTower getting involved in publishing games with the Essentials line, I'm not sure if they'll be as good a resource in a year or so's time
I found their (SU&SD) review very strange. It was at odds with my experiences just playing the app.
