Relevant to the female superheros in high heels, I have a question. I have at least two relatives who specifically change into high heels in order to dance, often quite energetically. I get the strong impression that this is not for aesthetics, that the high heels make it easier to dance. Is this plausible, and how does it relate to the difficulty of running in high heels mentioned above?

What kind of heels do they wear? For that matter, what kinds of dancing do they do?

I can't speak for them and don't have dancing experience, but I can't run in heels. It's much more difficult to balance, you can't flex your foot in the same way to push off from the ground, your calf muscles can't move as freely and are therefore less efficient, your ankle muscles are constantly readjusting to keep you upright.

Most of all though it's painful. Much more of your body weight is on the balls of your feet than usual, rather than being evenly distributed over the heel, ball and outer arch. As far as the balls of your feet are concerned, you're putting twice as much pressure on them as you do naturally. This is why women who wear heels when they go out often buy those gel pads for their shoes and still end up taking the shoes off before the end of the night and swapping to a pair of soft flats they keep in their bag, or even going barefoot.

There are treatments you can get nowadays where fillers are injected into the balls of your feet every few months to cushion them, like semi-permanent gel pads. No one would do that if heels didn't hurt.

Ever seen a track athlete competing in heels? Nope, me neither.

The Spite's would make more sense to me if they had clothes like Exemplar which looks like clothes that were tattered together from what was available.  Only Grudge's clothes make sense to me.

It really depends on your heels and of course, training. Dancing or running in block heels, for instance, is no biggie, provided they are closed and not a silly sling/open toed deal. While running, you lean forward anyway, so the block actually helps you push off with the ball of your foot. As for dancing, I can't really tell you why, but heels change the way you balance your body, and ballroom, tap etc, actually becomes easier in heels than in flats (Tap dancing in flats is pretty much impossible, actually).

Pointy heels are a different matter, but it is entirely possible to run with them, and run fast at that. Where I live, there is a race at the Pride festival each year, where the contestants run in spikey heels (most of them are dudes), and I have never actually seen someone fall. The actual heel doesn't have contact to the ground when they run anyway, so with a pair of shoes you are comfortable in and some practice, you can run as fast in heels as in sneakers.

So yeah, if you want impossible, try running in flip-flops. Now that is a nightmare!

A few more comments about body types. There is a big difference between "fat" and "thick".  Just because people have a thicker build they are not necessarily fat. Again I would say go look at camille leblanc-bazinet. She won the 2014 crossfit games and I can assure you she is not fat, but she is not skinny either. Can you eat a lot of food and be heavy set and still athletic? Sure. Can you drink beer have a gut and still be athletic? Sure. Will you be able to do what needs to be done to save the world? Probably not. We are talking about superheroes after all. Not just people that are in the top 25% or even in the top 10%.  These are the elite of the elite.

As for running in high heels, sorry those will not help you. If you are a heel strike runner the high heel will break off straight away. If you are a good form runner you won't be able to use your calf in your running motion. There is a reason we race in "flats". The current distance racing shoe has about a 5mm-9mm heel rise. The sprinting shoes are dead flat.

Why aren't Olympic athletes wearing them then?

I don't doubt that some people can run short distances in heel relatively well, but no-one runs "real" non-novelty races in heels, so the "just as fast" bit doesn't make any sense.

Wearing heels occasionally probably isn't a problem. But wearing them for a physical superhero "job" seems like a very silly idea to me.

Re. heels, my personal impression is that part of the reason why people wear them for some types of dancing is that they have a certain effect on one's posture that many find pleasing.  Personally, that's the only reason why I ever wear them for anything.  Of course, posture is situational: good posture for one purpose is bad posture for another.  I've practised aikido for 13 years and I'd never wear heels for a fight (not that I'd be looking for one; the best defence is running away, which heels also hinder!).

I'm sure you're joking, but just for the sake of being clear, you don't speak for me either.   :slightly_smiling_face:

Actually, the argument "these are superheroes" kind of throws the concept of athleticism out the window wholesale. Consider that muscle and tendons can only do so much, super-human strength has nothing to do with muscle mass. neither does superhuman speed, metabolism, agility, flight, energy creation, etc. etc. Why couldn't someone weighing 400lbs and looking like Gabriel Iglesias run 700 MPH and bench press a tank? (actually, that would be pretty awesome) If you say "they're not fit" I would point out that decatheletes can't leap over buildings and fire laser beams out of their ears, obviously something else is going on here.

I can see the argument for Wraith, Fixer, Expat, i.e. the more high tech or costumed crimefighter heroes. but for the characters whose powers surpass anything "human" (legacy, Captain Cosmic, AA, Tempest, SkyScraper, Spite.) why would they have to be fit.

EDIT: not to pick on Mr. Iglesias, just the first name that came to mind.

Wow, this thread's over a thousand posts now...I don't recall seeing any other thread here get that big :O.

Anyway, I agree on the "boobs are getting too big" thing. I'm not a fan of the whole "all women have tiny waists and huge tits and wear hardly any clothing even if they're heading off to storm a castle" thing, and I'm a bit disappointed that it looks as though the Sentinels art is heading in that direction too :(.

Also, I join MigrantP and Estelindis in not being referred to by Tegre - I'm not even interested in superheroes, really. I just play Sentinels because it's co-operative and highly replayable due to the randomness factor ;).

I believe the standard comic book reasoning is that these people are involved in saving the world, and every edge they can get counts. Even with a beer gut, Legacy would be super-strong and super-tough, but a trim and fit Legacy would be stronger and tougher (even if the effect isn't nearly as dramatic as it would be for a regular flatscan human).

So, take that as you will.

Hey, I was not claiming that spikey heels are reasonable footwear for running. I only said, it can be done with practice, and it can be done in a way that you are not actually any slower then you'd be normally. I know for a fact that I can hit my top speed in boots with a 3 inch block heel, because I have done that (LARPs make you do crazy stuff). The reason they are not worn in the Olympics are probably A: They would in all likelyhood not be legal footwear B: If you fell, you'd fall much worse and C: They will have negative effects on your body in the long run (which really flat shoes do too).

But let me assure you that my personal superhero costume does not involve heels, bathing suits, strapless tops or random areas of exposed skin.

I hope Adam never changes the way he draws his art for anyone other than himself.  He's his own artist.  There's been many forms of art throughout history that portray things in an unrealistic manner, yet Comic Book art seems to be one that everyone is okay getting up in arms about.

Would you go to a surrealist art gallery and complain to the owner that none of the pieces made sense?

Of course Adam has the right to his own artistic integrity.  It's just that, apart from the few things I mentioned (cough straps cough), I thought that, from the start, his art stood out for not being the pandering kind, compared to other comic-style art that I've seen.  Sure, the SotM heroes are in great shape, but they generally don't come across as objectified or intended to titillate, and I think that's good.

I believe many object to cheesecake comic art not because of its unreality, but rather the messages that such art conveys. One of those messages is that there are strict physical ideals for males and females, ideals which include overt (and rather impractical) sexuality, especially for women. Some people, myself included, enjoy the unreality of superheroic themes, but don't believe that forced sexuality should be an integral part of super-art.

So no, I wouldn't complain to the owner of surrealist art gallery. But if I visited a gallery of landscapes and every painting included cows mating in the foreground, I wouldn't really want to come back.

I've always loved comics, used to go to the library to read them all the time.  Problem for me has always been the women and men being far too stereotyped for me.

I come from a Quaker Family full of very strong women, and I don't see that in comics, and even when they do show up they end up falling into the standard cliches at some point.

What I love about SotM is the characters feel more real to me than any of the comic book characters I've read (which isnt exaustive) both males and females.  That includes the way they look.  I'd rather not have any of that change.

I think having a wide array of body types and styles is fine. Not everyone Adam draws is boobs and beefcake. I think moutains are being made of molehills when one or two show up. If you truly desire variety, you will need all types, not just the types you think are ok right? So until everyone Adam draws is all boobage, let's keep the larger picture in mind

Thing is, Adam's not just drawing for himself. Once you put your art out there on a product, it'll be assessed and critiqued in the context of society, and rightly so. We're the ones paying for it after all, and if we dislike it enough to stop buying the game because of it then we have a right to speak up about it.

And for the record, I don't just complain about comic book art. I complain about similarly harmful imagery in movies, TV, magazines, ads, books, wherever I see it. I fight stereotypes wherever I see them. I'm not picking on comic books and excluding other media.

And I don't agree with the attitude of "it's the artist's vision, let them draw whatever they want". If your work's out in public, you have a responsibility to not perpetuate harmful stereotypes or produce images that contribute towards body confidence problems or similar, in the same way that you have a responsibility to show that there are possible negative consequences to certain behaviours or actions if you're writing a comic book. Far too many artists ignore those responsibilities. If what Adam wants to draw is a scene of sexual assault and put it in a game which is on sale to the public (I'm pretty sure he doesn't) then should we just allow that with no comment at all?

As to the surrealist gallery, I'd certainly provide feedback if the previous exhibition by that painter was in one style and the publicity had lead me to believe that this one would be similar, but turned out to be something completely different. Especially if the original art was refreshing and inclusive and the new stuff harmful.

I don't think we have a wide array of styles and body types.

I think the problem is we're seeing more and more boobage recently, and I'm worried that Adam's art is heading away from the style I loved in the first place and towards something that many people feel is harmful. Harmful, and boring. I don't want that to happen.

That's totally not the point being raised though; the thing that is bothering so many of us is that the SotM characters are becoming more like this over time, with more impractical clothing and inflating chests being the two biggest things that people have noticed. I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as superhero cartoons generally seen elsewhere, it just seems like the whole art style of Sentinels is drifting in that direction. Why shouldn't we talk about it now, when the change is obvious enough that multiple people have found it noteworthy enough to comment? It's far better to point it out now rather than wait for it to go downhill.

I disagree - sort of.  Variety will include things you disagree with.  But that doesn't mean that everything must be included.

To make an overly extreme example:  My university desires to accept students with a variety of interests, opinions, and desires.  But if a student shows up with a nuke strapped to his back or an assult rifle in her hands, they're not going to let that person onto campus.  Technically speaking, that cuts down on the variety on campus.  But somehow, I don't think the school will suffer from lacking that variety.

Adam's art is referential. Explicitly so. So, even if he plays and distorts some of the codes of the superhero genre, he can't reinvent them from scratch.

Big boobs, second skin costumes, and strapless bras are all staples of the superhero genre graphic code (Wonder woman, who was one of the most progressive feminine hero of her time, has them all). I'm not saying that can't be criticized (it should, and all arguments given here make a lot of sense), but you can't charge Adam of all of this. And I think we should keep in mind that there's also the moral bias always hiding behind such critics, with its own normative values - which are also rightful objects of critics.

There are other biases - with much more deadlier implications - which plague the superhero genre (americanocentrism being the most terrible of all, since it tends to make all non-american humanity become transparent, fading out of the compassion that is requested from the reader). Yet I wouldn't criticize Adam and Christopher for it, since they didn't invent the genre they're referencing to. And they're trying to counterbalance such a bias, in their own way (Haka or Naturalist being examples of that - though there is a lot to criticize here too, if you feel that way).

In the same way, for all the new Miss Information or Mindphyre we get, there are still feminine heroes like Parse, or the Operative in Tactics, or even Becky Blast compared to Glamour in For Profit...

What I mean is : comparing Sentinels' art (or cultural implications) to reality is just due to lead to disapointments. >G didn't create the graphic code they have to rely on to clearly and immediately appear as a "superhero" game. They're not out for photographic realism. Yet, I think they're trying, in their own way, to think out of the mold when they design characters (as much as they can). And you can't blame Adam for getting closer to the code (meaning his art is more easily recognized as valuable superhero art), while not acknowledging how he tries to keep his own distance from it, with some of his designs.

Now if we could get back to the topic and the preorders...

A thought occurs.  Considering the promos that'll come with the Villains pre-order, we've got four heroes left without promos: Omnitron-X, Parse, Sky-Scraper, and Guise.  I wouldn't be surprised if there was just one more big expansion after Villains, with promos for all those heroes being released alongside that (plus, if the expansion itself contains heroes, maybe there'll be promos for those).

That's not surprising.  There are far fewer villain promos than hero promos.  If the intention was to have at least one promo for every villain, I think way more of them would have been released by now.  My post is more a comment that we only have a very small number of heroes without promos now, so we might be quite close to the end of expansions for SotM (unless there's the intention to release even more promos, for some heroes that already have some, as we saw in the case of a few of the Wrath promos).

Probably. Christopher said there were plans for every hero to have a promo, so that sounds reasonable. If there are 5 heroes, like in Vengeance, that would be 9 hero promos in that pack. Kind of a lot, but there were 8 with Shattered Timelines, so it’s not unreasonable.

I disagree with the idea that it's right to move closer towards the traditional superhero style. The Enhanced Edition art couldn't possibly be mistaken for anything other than superhero art, and it's not nearly as problematic to me as the direction the art's going in recently.

"That's what superhero art is like" is a crappy reason for perpetuating stereotypes and idealising cookie-cutter unrealistic body types.

Adam's a good enough artist in his own right not to have to have to rely on tired and harmful tropes like the hugely overused gravity-defying-boobs-on-a-stick body type for every female character.

Personally I don't give a crap about his art being "valuable" in terms of superhero art. I want his art to be varied, to enhance the game it's created for, and to not alienate women. I especially don't want his art to alienate women just because that's what comic book are "should" be like, when it's clear that the message women get from comic books is "This is not for you, it's for straight men. You don't matter."

My current "dream villain" would be Heartbreaker. We know he was a good guy and then was "broken" becoming a villain, right ? So we could have a Miss Information / Spite like villain in two phases : at first he is a good guy, and can't be damaged. Heroes have to "solve" his cards ( by fighting them /destroying them/ discarding, whatever) - if they solve enough they win, if they are too slow/fail, he flips, becoming Heartbreaker, and must be fought... This would be the "birth of a villain" deck :) "Don't go to the dark side, HB ! "

Same thematic : a promo for the Matriarch. You fight her to convince her to let her villain ways behind and become Pinion. No idea how to implement it, but would be fun.

(Heels topic : I think that you put high heels when dancing not because they make dancing easier, but because you think it will make you better looking in the night club. Heels,  lire earings, make-up and so on  are "beauty", or at least "look" accessories. By the way the thing I don't like about Tactics Wraith is the lips make-up ...)

geeze and peas.  I stand by what I said earlier.  I think you missed my point.  For a second I thought I was rambling on about Tactics.  I had to go back and reread my original rambling.  Then I see that  you "lazer focus" (yes with a Z!) on probably the least important part of my post.  The Blanket Statment about people and why they play Sentinels had little to do with the rest of what I had stated.  I'm more concerned with the longevity of Sentinels of the Multiverse both the card game and Tactics game and where Sentinels of the Multiverse is going.  We all know that there is supposed to be a big bad for the final Xpac and that's it.  The storyline for this arc ends.  If we're lucky >G may make another mini expansion or two here.  However timelinewise Tactics continues that story, and my only real concern was that which is yet to come.  Will Tactics last till its Big Bad Ending?  I mean why else would I go on and on about timelines and expansion pack orders and blah blah blah. What if Tactics ends prematurily?  My biggest concern is the current numbers for pre-order.

As far as you're all concerned you all can once again have your indivdual reasons for playing sentinels.  NO REALLY! I amend you all!(err most?) There. Me I'll be in the corner feeling misunderstood.

ok I'm over it.

back on topic… Derp I hope you're right.  While I think it would be a pretty cool deck to include, I wouldn't mind seeing some of the For Profit members getting their own deck specifically Becky Blast, Glamour, or even The Hippo. Yes the Hippo, because I think he would just be a nice laughable warmup fight. Sort of the Anti-Iron Legacy. Or how NOT to be a Villain in SotM.   I also wouldn't mind seeing one or two of the VotM or Vengence Villains getting their own Solo deck as well.  Fright Train because he just seems the type that would roam around even without Baron Blade, Biomancer because he seems creepy enough to work on his own.  My wishful thinking is a Nemesis for Unity, Bunker or Absolute Zero even though I thought I read that the three would not be getting a non Vengeance styled villain ever.

I also wouldn't mind seeing a Villain but with Dark Watch or The Prime Wardens as their nemesis, but on the level of difficulty as Iron Legacy.  Someone also mentioned fighting Resurrected Fixer somewhere and, honestly I wouldn't mind punching Zhu Long in his face in his own solo deck.

Ok, I don't think that's what I was saying, but hey… It's the internet, so let's fight the fight !!

What I mean is : how do you define the barrier of "oversexualization" (or unrealistic body-types), while the very comics art THIS GAME IS REFERENCING TO (and, due to its marketing, is VITALLY linked to - its superhero theme has to be recognized to appeal to a given large market this game is condemned to target) is BUILT on oversexualization itself. You don't read comics ? Ok, that's cool for me… But you can't dismiss all the comics corpus from which the game is built on with a waving of the hand, saying "hey, they've gone overboard !" Especially since you seem to overlook the fact that… In terms of oversexualization, they've gone overboard FROM THE START. It is the very basis on which the graphic language of superhero comic books are built. You can regret it, and in fact, there is a lot to criticize about it, but that seems to be a bit paradoxical to say "it was fine until now, but here they jumped the shark", while I don't see how the recent characters with big boobs or unpractical costumes are so different from what we saw before. Fatless people, fighting in tight spandex costumes, some of them using capes, with body-built males, and females which are "stick with boobs", like you said. They've been here from the start, as far as I can see. Because, you know… It's like… A superhero game ?

Once again, what is depicted in those pictures isn't reality. It's more like a mythical grammar, which fundamentals ARE guilty of oversexualization. Now, there is place for progress and evolution. But I think we can acknowledge Adam and Christopher continuing efforts to stray a bit from this initial, constraining pattern. Like I already said, heroes like Parse, the Alchemist, or more recently Becky Blast, seem to be a good direction. Once again, it is the limit you're seeing there that I'm not sure I can aknowledge. I mean, sure, those Arminia's new boobs are huge… But more importantly… WHERE HAVE ALL THE NIPPLES GONE ???

I think it was around the time Tactics Unity came around that folks started getting frustrated with how some of the women in the SotM universe were being portrayed.  The latex pink definitely isn't my idea of an awesome costume, but I don't want to disregard how much this setting has done for inclusiveness and diversity while trying very hard to avoid tokenism or ignorant pandering (like DC's Bunker complaining that people don't just label him as gay in Teen Titans) .  There are a lot of great characters in Sentinels that aren't straight, white, American men.

These new designs do seem to fall much more comfortably into the more "male gaze-y" area of superhero design, but I don't want that to turn into critiquing every character for impractical costumes or reality defying design.  Fixating on "realism" is usually a pretty poor route in fantasy stories.  Paul Revere didn't actually complete the ride he's known for in stories.  Chemical plants are more likely to give you cancer than rejuvinate your body.  It's rather absurd and presumptuous of anyone to think that aliens would take time out of their busy schedules of not thinking we are the center of the universe to learn how to speak (mostly) fluent English.  I'm willing to accept that Argent Adept knows how to oil himself up to slip into his costume and Wraith knows the best way to wrap her bandages to avoid any embarassing wardrobe malfunctions.

But it's hogwash to brush off criticisms about these designs due to the fantastical nature of this setting.  "Because comics!" is an argument that makes me cringe because it gives permission for the medium to be written off or infantilized as something that doesn't need a consistent, well-written, and articulate narrative.  I would like to assume there is a reason why a lot of the female characters as of late are busty with form-fitting, reality warping costumes because I trust Greater Than Games.  But people who are fans who love this game and its lore saying that these new designs are disappointing is a reason I totally understand.  Writing that off as a fellow fan or a designer is never a good route, regardless of whether the design shifts or not.

For me?  Some of these designs are a little weird and I'm not as excited for them.  It also doesn't help that it's five characters that represent a powerset that used to be held by one character.

See, I like Haka, but if I was learning about Haka and his four other Maori warrior buddies that all had different ways that they were ageless then I may not be as impressed. That's what's so great about the promo cards!  Vernon is my favorite Bunker but I don't need to go through a laundry list of Bunker decks to find the particular flavor of pallet swap ninja Bunker suit I want to play.

Five peeps who are each representative of 1/5th of Spite's power feels like one character for the price of five rather than vice versa.

I hope this works out so that the fans and the creators are cool with each other, because I really like this game and the people it attracts.  I don't know what the right answer is to all of this, but whether the design changes or stays the same I don't know that I'll fall in love with this team of characters who can literally be described as a single unit by pluralizing another character's moniker.  I've been surprised before, but I feel like this is gonna be a hard sell regardless of what happens.

But the cold, hard truth is I'm probably gonna buy the game regardless of what happens with "Jackie D and The Spites" or the quality/quantity of straps on various characters.  I have decks in SotM that have probably only been played once or twice and I'm completely comfortable with a handful of characters in Tactics that I'm not excited by.

I'd sure like to love them all, though.

But hey, at least they didn't go as far as that SotM fan expansion that will remain nameless with a character that literally slings his infected blood at people to make them sick.

That sh*t is disgusting on a number of levels.

paptimus,

Just because something has always been a way, doesn't mean it can't be better.

Adam's early art on SotM, while less polished, was still defintitley comic book material in its nature and did not provoke the criticisms about over sexualisation. In fact, quite the reverse was true with a fair degree of praise for not resorting to T&A posing and tits on a stick bodies for all the women. While the variety of body types is still broader than much of the source material, people are commenting on what seems to be an unwelcome trend towards more uniformity of body shape, along with an increase in sexualisation of those body types. The fact that comics do it is really irelevant. Not all comics do, even in super hero comics, and >G has rather spoiled people by not doing this so people are trying to raise concerns now before it becomes a big problem.

One can paint waterlillies without painting in the impressionist style, and one can draw comic book art without resorting to juvenile and sexist stereotypes.

How successfull is PAX, and they ban booth babes?  It's one of the reasons they are so successful.

The one gaming trip I am sure to make every year is to Magfest, where a number or years ago a guy started adding panels about gaming from a scholarly perspective that have taken off and are now have their own section of the building and draw more crowds than the traditional panels.

The stereotypes of gaming and comics alienate a decent sized part of the fanbase.  While inclusiveness and more accurate portrayals, if they do alienate anyone, alienate a section of the community I'd rather not have on these forums anyway.

SotM doesn't need to cater to them, and greater than Games is frankly better than that.

Why would Pinion be a villain mini expansion? Thats her hero name. I doubt Matriarch would get two stand alone villain decks dedicated to her.

My best guess is Toy Master. Why? Well, in the Challenges, Toy Master is listed as Vanessas primary nemesis, but The Toy Master from Dreamers villain deck does not have a nemesis icon. I think that is a huge thing to miss don't you think?

That's a great train of thought, I really like it. I have been thinking about the older suggestion of a villain promo for the Dreamers deck, but as cool as that sounds I think it would lkely just end up a minion heavy deck with a big hit point counter in the middle to knock down. A Toy Master deck would be cool and novel enough to be very different from what's already in the game.

With the reveal of the circus environment, I think that we are going to see the toy master or something that develops the Dreamer/Visionaries story.

I'm in agreement with Foote, there. but I'm not sure that its going to be the promo villain.

I think there are a bunch of possibilities:

1. Madame Mittermeir (As the toy master)

We now have a much better idea of what many of the Dreamer's (prophetic) nightmares are actually about.  Maybe.  I think. Here is the breakdown as I see it, given teh heroes that are talking and the artwork for each one.

Dark hero- Iron Legacy

Granite Oni- Ninja/temple guardian?

Arachnoid- I first thought this was Akash'buta, but now I'm leaning towards the star creatures that we see on the AA's Prime Warden incap. Of course, It might BE akash'bhuta after she is contaminated by otherwordly materials (like in tactics, after we see her with Shards sticking out of her)

Illusory Demon-  The Host or the Court of Blood.

Tooth Fairy- Biomancer, possibly one of the Biomancer's homunculi

Macabre Specter- could be Promo Spite? Having a hard time thinking of someone else who works with the Wraith's story and fits the theme

Toy Master- Madame Mittermeir?  As the leader of the carnival, I could see this being a good analogue.

Treacherous Ape- Dark visionary

Whipacorn-  Danged if I know.  Something with Ra and the Sentinels, but I don't know what woudl fit that qualification.

2. The head of Project Cocoon- someone who sheds more light on FILTER, and could also fit the Toy Master label. Possibly who captures Unity.

3. The Yellow figure on Rook city Wraith's incap- possibly with Heartbreaker as a key component?  We know that he won't have his own Villain deck, but be part of someone elses.

4. CON- we know so very little about CON, except that it has to do with Unity, parse, and maybe others.  Is it a hero gone mad, trying to re-write history?

5. The Star creatures we see on AA's Prime Warden incap- maybe the same things as are on Orrim hiveminded and Atlantis- maybe they control heroes in some fashion?

6. The cosmic cyborgs- the ones with glowing green brains.

7. A stellar empire, where empyreon, the lady in blue (Harsh offense), and the green lady (PW Cap Cosmic's incap) are coming from- we know that Greazer seems to be getting paid by SOMEONE, so maybe they are the ones trying to collect cosmic-powered people?

I bolded what I would change. I think the first three all have solid rationals.

Whipacorn = I'm inclined to believe in CaCapitain for the Mainstay flavor text, but I could also go the route of Set for Ras flavor text and we see Set flogging Ra in his promo incap art

I am inclined to believe Tooth Fairy is Biomancer although with the Unity flavor text it really breaks up the pattern that governs the rest of the thought proccess for the others. Though currently I think it's the best thematic fit. Biomancer could have two nemesis symbols though (we know Miss Info will have more than one).

Though the Ape being Dark Visionary also breaks that mold with Tachyon in the flavor text of both instances we see the Ape.

Toy Master could just be Toy Master if he turns out to be a villain mini expansion. I could also picture Wager Master filling that spot as well. Madame Mittermeir would be interesting once we learn more of her, especially if she ever bears the Visionary nemesis symbol.

I suspect it would be hard to work out mechanically, but a villain that mimics the powers/effects of heroes could be really interesting. Their deck could be adaptations of hero cards (like Iron Legacy/Legacy and OmniX/Omnitron reference each other), and they could even have the ability to count as a hero target for the purposes of Galvanize, Heroic Interception, Cleansing Downpour, and such.

We haven't had a true shape-shifting villain yet. I feel this is a comic trope that must be addressed!

That was my thought. Having a villain respond individually to each hero would require a lot of book-keeping. What could be done is to have each of the villain's cards have a different nemesis symbol; when your hero's nemesis symbol is played, something bad happens to you.

Zomg, it's Justice World run by green Terminators in the shape of Absolution…so maybe the Host built it and it somehow managed to communicate with Fanatic's subconscious or something, and Apostate has some connection as well…or something.

And Chokepoint "talks" to machinery and adds its bits to herself and has spent time around Unity's workshop with all her bots that probably have some of her personality in them because of how she made them…and Chokepoint presumably is becoming more nad more mechanical as time goes by…so might possibly end up getting confused as to which personality is hers out of her original one and all the ones inside her from the machinery, and Unity's bots…to maybe…make her think she is Unity at some point, and injure herself to create bots? :open_mouth:

Chokepoint looks amazing.  I think it's fair to say that the criticisms that could be levelled at the design of Mindphyre don't apply across the board, and certainly not to the examples of character design that we've seen today.  (Okay: Chokepoint's outfit is strapless, but sure no one would argue it's not supportive!  It's armour!)

I am really interested to see who Chokepoint's nemesis might be.  Might she have multiple nemeses in K.N.Y.F.E., Bunker and Unity?  On the other hand, maybe the multiple nemesis thing should be a unique aspecy of Iron Legacy.  Rook City is Wraith's home, but only one of its villains is her nemesis.  A strong thematic and/or story link doesn't have to make characters nemeses.

I think the Celectial Tribunal is evocative of the Reapers of Mass Effect.  GtG have done some really interesting things with environments lately.  The Tribunal might work just as well as a villain.

I included AZ because his story is about being dependent on technology to survive, and his gradual acceptance if that fact.

As a Nemesis, Chokepoint resonates with all of their stories- by integrating with tech, she steadily becomes less human (which parallels AZ's story), she is a dark reflection of unity (she destroys tech to increase herself, whereas Unity brings tech to life). She is a reflection of Bunker as well- a weapon who decided to become more instead of following orders. Bunker has always used tech in service of others, and while he uses the suit to do so, he never becomes it.

ok so lets speculate on the order that we think everything will be out in. (mainly because I am bored of doing homework and/or preparing to teach).

My rough prediction for the order of stuff:

1. the tactics maps, I expect those to be out by the end of may at the latest mainly because they were kickstarter stuff, and I wouldnt be surprised to find out in a couple weeks they are already at the warehouse. plus shouldnt need much play testing if at all.

2. sentinel tactics broken city and for profit. With Sentinel tactics being sold at gen con last year and on paper I see greater than games needing to push the game a bit more to get exposure, I expect this to be out right before gen con, so end of July beginning of August at Gen Con with it being shipped shortly after.

3. that leaves Villians to be around Christmas time. This is based off the fact the last couple expansions came out right around then.

This is all my pure speculation though based off what is out there and how previous stuff has sold. The only issue is I know the play testers havent started testing yet and we dont know if there will be any natural disasters or strikes this year.

I feel like the The Celestial Tribunal  is just a massive reference to the Sword of Damocles. It could also be involved with Fanatic and Apostsate, but maybe not.

Unless... it's possible that Fanatic and Apostate are the last survivors of the race that created the sword? Feels like a stretch, but possible.

I defintely think Chokepoint ends up becoming Con, or at the very least causing way too may problems. Not only does it sound like she's going after the sun, but the ability to "know the weakpoints" could expand into time travel and trying to mess with the past.

Also, seeing Renegade... wait... why change his name to Renegade? Maybe he ends up realizing Con is up to no good and has decided to hunt down Con before it can cause trouble? Anyways, seeing Renegade has taken so much abuse but is still in Broken City after Plague Rat... dang, I really don't remember my point the name change threw me completely off.

Maybe his new Bounty is more complex than before : destroying all the evil in Broken City ?

Maybe he has lost the ability to travel in time and is stranded there ?

OR he succeeded in his mission for Con : Chrono Ranger changed the future. The FInal Wasteland won't happen. Con won't exist - and so no more Time Travel. Just a gunslinger fighting bad guys on the frontier.

We know that he lost his ability to travel in time - his time badge got busted on his incap side, and he gets rescued by future La Capitan.  We don't know if he regained his ability to travel after returning to populated space.  (Although since he was given the mission of stopping past La Capitan, it seems likely)

By the way - I am derailing, sorry. I don't know if anyone pointed it before, but one interesting point about Chrono Ranger is comics history : before the Super-hero revival in the 60s, cowboy comics AND monster comics were in vogue . When super-heroes went back to the front, an effort was made to make cowboys comics more superheroic, with costumed or powered villains, etc. But "monster" comics and cowboy comics began to sell less and less and disappear.

With Chrono ranger we have the former hero of a cowboy comics becoming a super hero. And fighting monsters. Perfect.

End of derail - I shouldn't spend my nights reading the Marvel University blog.

But yeah, I can totally see this.  One of the art pieces has Swift Bot being taken apart by Choke so shes obviously got her absorbing little hands onto Unity's tech at some point.

If the bots\Choke\Golem result does indeed end up becoming Con in the future, it would also fit with the tease we have had that Con is 'partly' Unity.

Are we sure Renegade is Chrono-Ranger? And do we have hints to guess from which timeline - and where in the timeline (or CR's own subjective time) he comes?

Isn't the Cosmic event ending SotM supposed to end the Multiverse and merge the various timelines ? I suppose that would have huge consequences for the whole time traveling connection (CR, La Capitan...).

Just thinking aloud here, but two things we know about Gollum Unity is that she's confirmed to be part of the Iron Legacy timeline (via her nemesis) and the original Unity is dead at that point (via the text, and as if she was alive then GU wouldn't believe she was the real one, presumably). If Chokepoint is destined to become GU (I think the artwork and text hint at that pretty heavily), that raises some questions (especially as I think I read that Unity is still alive in Tactics?) about when \ if Unity dies?

Chrono regains time travel from La Capitan, but he lost Con.

We don't know if he oes back to Con after that, but it seems like his accepting La Capitan's mission might signal his time with Con might be done.

Apostate as the lone survivor of his race, who quite possibly betrayed his race (just based on personality profile) in teh process makes so much sense.

Then he ?makes? Fanatic, or something?

This is really a confusing process to work through, as Helena has a start point, unless she was Superman for her race, and was sent in like suspended animation to stop the betrayer of their race?

As an innocent child perhaps she could make it past judgement, and she certainly has an obsession for judgement and justice, even for herself.

Just thinking out loud, but I like that direction.

I really enjoy the thought of the Tribunal being created by The Host and being a part of the Fanatic/Apostate story. Unfortunatly I don't think it will play out that way. Both are more linked to magics and faith and mystical otherworldy powers so it wouldn't seem to jive with a highly advanced technological AI at first glance. But the theme of judgment is a stong tie to both. I'll be keeping an eye on this for sure.

In Choke's bio, she heard voices from a resonating crystal. Where have I heard that one before? Could there be any relation to the blue stone of Deadline's, to the purple one of Infinitor/Cap Cosmic, possibly even to the yellow stone of the Infinite Scholar, to the green stone from the Dreamers stuffed Ape?

Hey Luther, quick question if you don't mind fielding it.

With the Tactics Tournement scene underway and the format solidifying, are you guys giving any extra thought to how viable the new characters are for tournement play? For example, with the nature of limited time per game, a character like Proletariat and his particular power kit do not lend itself well to that format. Or do you just care that each new character brings an interesting and distinctive kit to the game where tournement viability is an afterthought?

Personally, I think Proletariat is AWESOME for skirmishes. I used him to great effect in a game for fun recently. Crushed everything.

I think that people are going for the easy/straight-forward strategies, and that more complex characters will become more attractive as the meta for the tournament grows.

That said, I'll let Luther share his own opinions, of course.

Wait…  Proletariat doesn't lend himself well to the format?  How are people playing him?!?

I start with Shared Burden and Defensive Sacrifice, first turn split and move and maybe attack.  I can get within range in the next turn or so, just like most other heroes.  Remember you can use the split to "move" onto difficult terrain.  And then if enemies attack you can decide whether you want more clones or less (and move them closer to the enemy!)  Proletariat is actually about as mobile as Legacy (or more mobile with no elevation changes).

I only actually practiced him in the tournament environment (after the tournament) and he did great!  Ambuscade's trap everything intro was thwarted by Proletariat cloning all over the traps.  As for the hazard spaces, he avoided those (like most people did).  I would love to put up strategy guides for each of the Tactics heroes, but I sort of want to wait for the first whole tournament to finish so as to give others the chance to build their own.

My various theories, now that we know more:

The crystals:

We've seen a blue one (reveals weaknesses and how to open/close them)

We've seen a gold one (makes energy solid)

Proletariat may have been exposed to one (Duplication of material)

Finally, we have the green one in the Stuffed Ape- I have a theory that this enhances mental powers.  It could be that Visionary is psychic not because of drugs, but because she has been absorbing the energy of the green crystal for her entire life- this would also explain why the Dreamer suddenly became the Dreamer- she recieved the Stuffed Ape and its crystal payload, and the mental-enhancing energies therein.  It would also explain why Man-grove became more sentient after receiving the Ape- the crystal began enhancing its mental capability and giving it more of a sense of self and sapience.

Now, choke:

Choke merges with Deadline's artifact, which is powered by a blue crystal. Begins seeing flaws and how to rectify them.

Chokepoint merges with Unity's bots, which contain fragments of Unity's personality.

Chokepoint merges with the Omnitron IV factory.  She assimilates the leftover remnants of OX in the process, which gives her insight into the future.  This also gives her fragments of Parse's analytical mind (which was opened through exposure to Omnitron fragments + cosmic energy).

Over time, the fragments of Unity/OX/Parse became more integrated with the core Choke personality.

This became CON, and it set about trying to figure out how to avoid the final wasteland scenario.

La capitan (young) came to final wasteland.

The green monkeything took an OX component- which CON used to track her timestream.

Con finds suitable cantidate for timestream repair in Silver gulch.

Punches through to retrieve him, repairs him when rats tear off arm.

Arm contains bits of Choke (to integrate with his biology) and Unity (to reconfigure as needed).  Chrono-badge uses OX technology for time travel.  Bounty system uses Parse's knowledge ot find weak points that could be altered to prevent final wasteland.

BUT- badge got busted before he could complete everything. Repaired by La capitan (old) using time travel tech.

This gave Chrono a measure of peace, as it would take Choke quite a while to assimilate the new tech.  CON is temporarily silenced.

BUT- by the time of Broken city, something has changed.  Choke/CON has re-asserted control and begun mechanizing more of Jim.

I wonder- does anyone even remember the Chrono-Ranger?  did he do his job so well that memories of his presence were edited out of the timestream?

Does this spell work? I'll have to get a hold of Launius for the proper incantation.

Basically, how a single Proletariat at one far end of the map out of LoS can be effected by effects placed on another Proletariat at the other end of the map. Notable examples include: Champion Bot (would the farside Pro get the +2 dice to attacks?). Stealth Bot (would the farside Pro obtain Cover?). Twist the Ether/Foresight/Wrest the Mind (would farside Pro get to reroll his die?).

Proletariat is a single character(/ally/enemy), but multiple targets. If something says "target", it means a specific Proletariat marker on the board. If something says Character/ally/enemy, it means Proletariat as a whole.

This may cause some minorly Unintuitive interactions, but this rule should cover all cases.

FO
Foote

So, if I may expand on this for a second Luther, as long as one Proletariat is adjacent to Stealth Bot to gain cover, that means all Proletariats on the map gain cover?

Stealth Bot: Allies adjacent to Stealth Bot gain Cover
If yes, the same answer I assume would apply to Champion bot, as well as Twist the Ether and Wrest the Mind (but would exclude Foresight as that specifically mentions "targets" and not allies/characters)

What does this mean for Heroic Interception? Can Legacy intercept with a Proletariat he doesn't have LoS to as long as he can see at least one Proletariat on the map somewhere? (Interception uses the "Ally" wording). Would he trade places with the far away Proletariat or would he trade places with the one he can see and potentially cancel the attack out if that particular clone and Legacy were too far away?

LU
lutherbellhendricksv

If Proletariat is adjacent to (friendly) Stealth Bot, Proletariat will have Cover. You might think this is odd, since how can a smoke cloud give cover to the other Proletariat over there? The thing you're missing is, Proletariat's not a dumb guy. He knows local smoke doesn't help him a lot. So he talks to Stealth Bot. He empathizes with feeling like just a part of a greater whole, a cog in a machine. He gains Stealth Bot's trust. And eventually, Stealth Bot teaches Proletariat how to be stealthy like her.

tl;dr Stealth Bot trains Proletariat how to be sneakier.

Proletariat

Ambuscade

Baron Blade.

Just go defense and win with health as time runs out.

Ambuscade is nearly impossible to hit, you really can't incap Prole if he decides to just live and forget damage and Baron Blade can teleport and nuke and outlive his enemies.

May be cheap but it rocks.

Oh and Foote, replace Legacy with Operative, Bitter Spiral is the new Market innefficiency.

Kusarigama Bitter Spiral is epic, move to an enemy, pull another to you, dodge.  It's especially fun if you are in berserker mode, as the bonus damage is added to the dice you block for Bitter Spiral.

The last time I pulled that I had Prole push the one that moved out of melee back in, and hit Operative.  She killed them both with Spiral, and Prole lost a clone.

Also had a Baron using Redistributor vs. operative, so I switched Kusarigama for focus srikes (or whatever the +2 dice one is) ran up to him and smacked him a good one (I was at 2hp) of the 4 dice he threw back at me I blocked 3 and turned into a 7d attack back at him.  I was left at 1hp and he dropped from full.

Our FLGS bans Operative every game now.

Which is sad, because pulling an allied prole to you giving him a new clone for 1hp?  Yeah that was fun.

Well that explains why that worked so well.

Operative is still sick in tournament play, because she excells at scoring incaps and can participate in all sorts of shenanigans.

A great one for the curent meta is countering Ambuscade by throwing one of his allies at his traps,

Countering Baron by giving him 6 as an Automiss, Crushing Tachyon's movement rolls.

She counters so many strategies that the real strategy of Operative is which opponent being shut down hurts the other team most.

I have a freelancing check coming in at some point, but unless it arrives tonight or tomorrow, I'm going to miss out.

I'm right there with you, PW. The pre-order came at the second-worst possible time of year for me.

I got villains preordered but I don't get paid till Friday. Might miss tactics and that sux since I can never get to cons for promos.

On the plus side, my check arrived today!  I can get my pre-order in just under the deadline...

However, I'm probably only going to be able to back Villains right now.  While I'm really excited to see Dark Watch hit the table, Tactics just isn't seeing enough play time at our table to justify the cost right now.  That said, I'll likely order it through my FLGS once it's out (and things are more financially stable...).

I'm not going to pre-order, I can't get enough friends together to make the UK shipping tolerable, but I've been watching the numbers tick by (just hoping to see it do well). Is it just me, or has there been a late run on Broken City? It seemed consistently to be about 1/5th as many copies as VotM, but since PAX East, it has caught up by a small amount (maybe to 2/9ths as an estimate) - did anyone else see that or am I imagining things?

Paul did say that they sold a good amount of pre-orders at PAX East, so it is porbably those folks redeeming their code on the website

I'm still looking forward on details for this year's Gathering of Heroes/WotC celebration and possible volunteering at a local children's hospital. That sounds like a blast.

Has there been any news for a release date? Seems like I pre-ordered forever ago.

Villains is in the process of shipping; the Tactics stuff seems to have hit unexpected development delays.
