Not sure how many people here remembered hearing (some saw) this promo at the Gathering of Heroes awhile back. However a friend of mine who reads the blog of the author informed last night that this promo has finally come out in the open. you can find details here: http://blog.patrickrothfuss.com/

I think I'll grab the two for twenty deal and give one to my friend as a Christmas gift who owns a copy of the game.

That power is pretty good but man he's slightly even more squishy at 23 health.

Edit: it sounds like anything they sell goes toward their Worldbuilders charity not just that promo card

The copyright year on the card image is listed as 2013 so this has at least been something they've had in mind for a while.  I assume this was the year the Gathering of Heroes took place but I'm not certain.

Can't see how much international shipping is.

Not that I can afford the promo anyway, but still...

There's a bit in the book where one of the strings breaks and he plays flawlessly, anyway - I believe it's referring to that.

In total, it's £17.45 for the promo. Shipping to the UK included.

That is about right, slightly more for the double-promo offer. Haven't checked for multiple double-promo options though, would anyone be interested in such?

I caved and got it last night. With one card at $15, the shipping is $11.something bringing the total to $26.something for me in Liverpool which works out at £17.45. So I guess it may be different elsewhere in the UK...

I was thinking of doing another bulk buy for this, like I did with Dark Watch. If we get twenty people onboard it's do-able for around a tenner each including P&P from the UK onward, but only if we can get enough subscribers before the deal closes - which might well be at the end of today.

So, I'm sure there was no connection between Kvothe and AA before they dreamed up the idea for this promo, but I'm assuming Christopher doesn't do anything that isn't canon, so is Kvothe supposed to be a previous Virtuoso of the Void?  Is that how he fits into the rest of the lore?

CB

That would be cool. I think I read somewhere on the wiki that Kvothe inspired the AA, hence the red hair and the pipes.

It would be interesting to see what Akash'Bhuta's incarnation in the Kingkiller world would look like considering the more overt magic that permeates it.

Bought two!

I just bought two.

Yes, it's pricey for a promo card, but I've been donating to Rothfuss' Worldbuilders charity for a couple of years now anyway, so I'm just considering it part of this year's contribution.  I'll probably donate some more straight to the campaign so I can get some tickets for raffle too.  They've already got over 1,500 items in the raffle, including some very neat stuff -- Details at: www.worldbuilders.org

As for the Kvothe/AA connections, it's so obvious in retrospect that I'm annoyed I hadn't thought of it earlier.  My assumption is that Kvothe is not an earlier Virtuoso of the Void, but is the Virtuoso from an alternate dimension who has teamed-up with the F5 during some crisis event (it is called Sentinels of the _Multiverse_, after all).

...

Oh man... thinking about alternate universe versions of SotM characters led me down a rabbit hole of ideas and so I've started a tread for it over in the Sentinels Comics forum.

But apparently the connection is a secret, and if you're playing the promo in a game, you're just playing some random redhead who happens to have AA's powers for no reason.

Worldbuilders is the name of the group of authors that Patrick Rothfuss rounds up to donate stuff for his charity raffle & auction.  The proceeds from those are donated to Heifer International, a nonprofit that distributes animals, along with agricultural training, to families in need around the world as a means of providing self-sufficiency.

They're a pretty rescpected charity organization.  You can read about them at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heifer_International

I don't mind giving money to the charity at all, it's the fact that half the money goes to the postal service that bothers me! I think that I might just make a straight donation and then make my own copy the next time I have a reason to get a deck of cards printed.

If you sign up for Audible for a free month you can download the audiobook version of “The Name of the Wind”. I’m told it’s the inferior reading of the two available, but I’ve found it quite enjoyable!

You may find references for The Argent Adept’s deck in there while learning a bit about Kvothe!

Got Mine this morning.

My Goodness, Adept is insane with this card.

Turned a horrible turn vs. Voss into a nothing turn, Tempest put Forced Deployment on top with Stratosphere, then Adept Vernaled to put Strat on top of Tempest's deck, then used Sympathy to  play Stratosphere, which put Conqueror on top of Voss's deck, then discarded the conqueror from Voss's Deck.

It was a great turn.

It also works insanely well with Alacritous Subdominant, since you can Vernal songs or instruments to the top of your deck then put them in play and use them in the same power chain, get an ally a key power back on top of their deck then put it in play and let them use it, or throw a DDA into the middle of a power chain.

Just Wow, the number of shenanigans this card allows.

So, how exclusive is "exclusive"?  Will Kvothe be part of the eventual unlimited promo pack?

KI
Killswitch
2014-12-08 22:14 UTC
#57

Well, keep in mind ALL promos are exclusive. If you miss your chance to obtain one via Kickstarter, convention, etc. it's impossible to purchase afterward, unless you hunt on eBay. With that said, it was stated somewhere that even Super Scientific Tachyon will be available along with the other promos eventually when they're all reprinted. So I would imagine unless Kvothe has some sort of exception to this rule due to charity funding, they all should be there.

I got my two today as well, though I got a shipping notice last week.

Looks like an interesting card, but I'm not going to be able to play one for a bit since my game group isn't meeting til next week and I am absolutely spoiled by Sentinels Digital when it comes to playing solo :-).

Wait is that how that would work? At the time you used the power the top card of voss's deck was the Forced Deployment right?  Your reveal two cards, ok so you reveal the Stratoshpere and then reveal the Forced Deployment.  Then you choose to put one into play so that would be Stratoshere and that resolves by putting Conqueror on top of the deck.  Then discard the other which in this case is the Forced Depolyment. Even though Conqueror is on top of the deck, the "other" card is forced deployment.  I think FD would go to the trash and Conqueror would stay on top of the deck.

You are correct, I know Conqueror went in the trash so we either did it wrong or I reversed the order when I typed it.

Yeah, you can never expect tracking information to be up to date. They don't update the location of packages very promptly.

I love it though, it tricks me into expecting it later than its actual arrival, so I'm pleasantly surprised when it's "early.
