EXT. - EIKEN-RUBENDALL RESEARCH EXPEDITION PLANE

A sleek ultramodern aircraft is winging its way over Arctic waters toward a smoldering volcanic cone.  A U.S. Military cargo craft is escorting it, as is LEGACY, flying under his own power.

INT. - EIKEN-RUBENDALL RESEARCH EXPEDITION PLANE

A pretty black-haired teenager is staring out the window at the majestic, square-jawed, white-clad and caped figure of LEGACY, her expression one of absolute boredom.

LILIAN CORVUS:  "So lame...."

Camera cuts back to TACHYON, who seems to be controlling the urge to grind her teeth, and ABSOLUTE ZERO, whose body language conveys a mixture of confusion, contrition, and defensiveness.

TACHYON (quiet):  "I can't believe you let my bratty cousin Lilian on board an official exploratory flight to an island where drone reconaissance has spotted living pterodactyls.  What the hell were you thinking?"

ABSOLUTE ZERO:  "She said you approved it?  How was I supposed to know?  You've done crazier things."

TACHYON (less quiet):  "She's sixteen years old!  And if anything happens to her, Sergeant Corvus is going to have my head mounted on his wall next to all those African animals he kills for fun."

ABSOLUTE ZERO:  "We have three other superheroes along on this little eleventh-hour joyride to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle World, to say nothing of a hundred thousand dollars worth of equipment, not counting the Bunker suit, my own ambulatory prison and ICU, or any of Wraith's high-tech toys.  Even if there really are dinosaurs on this mysterious 'geothermal refuge', I doubt that your cuz would be any safer back at an inner-city public school."

TYLER VANCE (entering frame from left):  "Besides, Lily's a good kid, even if she is going through the whole teenage angst phase.  I think she just wanted to spend some time with her famous nuclear physicist slash superhero relative?"

ABSOLUTE ZERO:  "Then why's she sulking in the forward compartment?"

TACHYON:  "She's always sulking.  It's her default setting."

TYLER VANCE:  "She's probably just not a people person."

ABSOLUTE ZERO:  "That's what you think.  Believe me, I know loneliness.  She may quote awful Goth poetry at the drop of a hat, but she's not really depressed; she just likes to make a show of it.  She'd probably have a whole flock of admirers back at her school if she wanted one, but she gets off on pretending to hate everyone.  Not that I knew any of this when she showed up at the lab claiming to be your intern."

TACHYON:  "I still can't believe you fell for that."

INTERCOM:  "Attention everyone, this is your captain speaking...we are now ten minutes from landing on an uncharted island twenty kilometers above the Arctic Circle, where volcanic activity and an anomalous wind pattern result in a tropical climate year-round despite the high latitude.  Please fasten your seat belts as we prepare to make a water landing just off the coast."

An uncomfortable expression settles on TACHYON's face as she straps in, while TYLER VANCE looks relaxed and cheerful as usual.  AZ goes into the forward compartment and can be faintly heard arguing with LILIAN, who claims that seat belts are "merely a feeble attempt at preserving an illusion of safety in the face of the constant threat of man's utter annihilation by the uncaring cosmos".  Eventually he must manage to assert some authority and get the issue resolved, for he comes back and buckles himself in as well.

EXT - COAST OF INSULA PRIMALIS

The seaplane sets down onshore, while the Army craft powers along, dropping several crates as it flies over the island.  THE WRAITH can be seen clinging to the parachute straps of the largest one.  Legacy swoops in and offers her a gentlemanly hand getting down, even as the boat containing the other four arrives on shore.

I'll take Ryan again if that's OK with people. Envisioner, do you still want the deck unshuffled, or should I start fresh?

For portability reasons, I'd been running the deck by spreadsheet. Should be pretty easy to move things around in a way that mimics shuffling cards in trash, play, and hand.

Should I just post a turn?

On that topic:

Absolute Zero

Initial HP: 29

Initial draw: Focused Apertures, Cryo Chamber, Frost-Bound Drain, Fueled Freeze, Modular Realignment, Sub-Zero Atmosphere. Send Focused Apertures & Sub-Zero Atmosphere to the bottom of the deck; keep the rest.

Everyone (including Bunker, whether he's the same player or not) is free to post their first turn.  However you will be required to maintain the same order in all future posts, so if you guys want Legacy to come first in turn order, everyone else should wait for him to post.  Feel free to discuss this issue in PM; please do not clutter up the game thread by doing so here.

I took my hand and trash, shuffled them, and put them on the bottom of my deck. Initial draw: “Thokk!”, Back-Fist Strike, Motivational Charge (x2), Next Evolution, Danger Sense. Put Motivational Charge and Back-Fist Strike on the bottom of the deck.

Legacy steps out onto the slick field of black glass, alert for any danger. “Look sharp, everybody!”

Strong initial draw for Wraith in my opinion.  And an unexpected bonus there in the draw phase.  I half-expect some effect to make me discard my hand to crop up now.  Going to hold back on burning those for a round or so to get a better idea of what equipment is going to be best needed.

FYI, the first two you drew should have been part of the initial hand, with two of those six sent to the bottom of the deck. Might possibly muck with your turn a bit.

Sorry it took me so long to get back here and update you guys.

Welcome to the game, Humble-Knight! And thank you for not playing an Adhesive Foam Grenade on the first turn, forcing me to figure out what that means in a game where the Environment and Villain decks are reversed (if played as normally affecting the Enviro deck, it'd mean this would be an extremely dull second round).

The cards you haven't yet seen ought to be random and unknown to you…I'm not too comfortable with you just copy-pasting card named among spreadsheet fields at whim.  Even if you are trying not to pay attention, the brain has a habit of imprinting random facts, so you might know that you have a Thermal Shockwave coming up three cards from now and then forget that you knew, so you never fix the problem, but your play is shaped by subconscious realization of your destiny.  If you can't keep a deck on hand to shuffle, perhaps carry a couple d20s in your pocket, and whenever you need to draw a random card, roll them - one is the 20s digit, the other just goes odd-even to determine whether you add 20 to the total, and whenever you roll a number higher than the current count of your deck (including any bottomed cards), you reroll.  (This might bias the roll result slightly against numbers above 20, but eventually the deck will be down to 20 cards and you can stop doing the odd-even roll, so the problem will fix itself.)

Again, you shouldn't know the order of the shuffled cards, so your deck should actually look like this:

Deck: (randomly ordered group of: The Legacy Ring, Flying Smash, Take Down, Fortitude, Danger Sense x2) - (randomly ordered group of: Back-Fist Strike, Superhuman Durability x2, Lead from the Front x3, Inspiring Presence x2, Fortitude x2, Bolster Allies x3, "Thokk!" x2, Next Evolution x2, Surge of Strength x3, Flying Smash, Motivational Charge, Heroic Interception, Take Down, The Legacy Ring, Heroic Interception) - Motivational Charge - Back-Fist Strike - Heroic Interception

I am inclined to be suspicious of Wraith's triple-Impromptu hand, but I have literally seen the same thing happen in the last two non-solo games I played (both of which featured Wraith, while the solo game in between did not).  It was likely the result of bad shuffling, but even so, it can happen, so I'll assume that Oaktree is "lucky" rather than "cheating".  So much for this game being anything resembling a challenge…

EXT - INSULA PRIMALIS

As the five intrepid superhumans (well, three superhumans and two extremely above-average "normal" humans each possessing millions of dollars worth of sophisticated gadgetry) - and, behind them, one morbid teenager - move forward across the jagged volcanic plain, they begin to notice large rotting carcasses piled on all sides, thronged with crows and vultures feasting on their entrails.  TACHYON zooms from one decayed hulk to the next, jabbering excitedly as she streaks across the dogged marching line of the other five visitors.

TACHYON (most intelligible snippet of garbled non-stop dialogue):  "…mygodit'sreallytruethesearetotallyLIVINGDINOSAURSwellokaynotlivinganymoreBUTtheywereuntilrecently, looksliketheymusthavebeencaughtbyablastofcarbonmonoxidegaswhenavolcanicventerupted, couldn'thavehappenedmorethansixhoursagoit'stoobadwehadtoapproachfromthesouthorwe'dhavegottenaniceview, hopefullythesamethingdoesn'thappenagainwhilewe'rehereit'dtotallysuckifwehadtoevacuate, wonderifIshouldtakesomesamplesbutdamnIdidn'tbringtheproperdecontaminationgear, didn'treallythinkwe'dactuallyfindanythingLIVINGhere(assumingtheseweren'tallofthemandsomeactuallyarestillliving)…"

LILIAN CORVUS (sotto voce):  "ugh…she's always so damn eager about everything, even when she's not moving at lightspeed I get tired just listening to her babble all the time, like life is all just one big adventure…one of these days she'll wake up a lonely old woman and be all like 'what happened', and she just won't get it…why the hell did I want to come along with this merry-go-round…"

As she walks sullenly behind the heroes muttering to herself, LILIAN looks about at the spectacle of death, with a mixture of disgust and fascination on her face.  Every time a new bird takes flight within her field of vision, she follows its path with her eyes, a faint ghost of a smile on her face - until she catches ABSOLUTE ZERO's faceplate turned her way, and forcibly stiffens her face into a mask of disdainful grumpiness.

End of Turn:  Nothing

In Play:  Carrion Fields [15]

Trash:  nothing

Deck: 23x?, Darken the Skies.  (For the moment, the Mask of the Matriarch is shuffled into the deck, but I am more likely to search it out at the appropriate time, bottoming it if I draw it sooner, than I am to decide "now" is the appropriate time just because I drew it.)

EXT - VOLCANIC CARRION FIELDS

LEGACY is marching in the front of the convoy, with WRAITH lurking in the large shadow his burly frame casts; the two armored men follow behind her, guarding LILIAN, while TACHYON zooms in and out of the middle position.  Abruptly TACHYON shouts a warning, just as the camera tightens on Legacy's face.

SFX:  (insert DANGER SENSE signature sound)

TACHYON:  "LOOKOUTGUYSWE'VEGOTCOMPANYANDTHEYDON'TLOOKFRIENDLY!"

A pair of prowling Velociraptors must have been snacking on carrion, hidden from view by the great carcasses, when they caught the scent of Our Heroes and began actively prowling ahead, laying an ambush.  The first one pops into plain view, drawing Legacy's and Wraith's attention - but a second slips around a looming cadaver and pounces on Wraith's back, its claws shearing through her cloak and making a shallow series of scratches on her back!

Ordered: Back-Fist Strike, Superhuman Durability, Lead from the Front, Inspiring Presence, Surge of Strength, Fortitude, Bolster Allies, "Thokk!", Lead from the Front, Bolster Allies, Next Evolution, Surge of Strength

Randomly ordered group of: Bolster Allies, Flying Smash, Fortitude, Heroic Interception x2, Inspiring Presence, Lead from the Front, Motivational Charge, Next Evolution, Superhuman Durability, Surge of Strength, Take Down, The Legacy Ring, "Thokk!"

Wraith

HP - 26

Wraith rolls suddenly to the side as the dinosaur shreds her cloak and does not quite succeed in shredding her.

She taps at a device on her wrist and makes an aside about "Autofocus devices for video recorders *can* be repurposed."

She then draws a throwing knife and tosses it firmly into the throat of the now running dinosaur.  It carooms into a pile of carrion-feasting birds - scattering them and crushing a few as well.

After a quick look for other threats shows none she then pulls out her cloak to look at the long slashes.  She sighs, and then pulls a roll of camoflague duct tape from the utility belt and starts making some quick repairs.

EXT - VOLCANIC CARRION FIELDS

At the sight of the velociraptors, LILIAN stifled an "eep!" and vanished behind Bunker's bulk, but as the big suit began firing "small" explosives to clear away the carrion, she apparently decided this was not the oasis of safety she was looking for, and slipped away into the primeval forest behind the heroes.  The trees are close together, a tight fit even for her slim and ill-endowed teenage form; the huge raptors would not be able to follow her into the woods...and neither would Bunker, AZ, or Legacy.  Tachyon would at least have to slow down in order to traverse the tangle of roots and undergrowth, which was perhaps exactly why her sullen cousin decided to vanish into it.  Behind her, unnoticed by her, the carrion-fowl that have flocked up away from the cacophony of battle have been circling in the skies, cawing raucous protests among themselves...but suddenly, unseen by the heroes, they momentarily assume a complex geometric formation with seven points, the last facing toward the rear of the hero group.  Then, just as abruptly, they collapse into a single teeming mass and fall angrily upon the heroes!

So if I read you guys's turns correctly, nobody killed the Rooks or Vultures, so I'm assuming they do damage.  And that's far from all that happens on this villain turn.

EXT - FOREST CLEARING

In a dark and shadowy spot among the trees, LILIAN has paused in her flight from the scene of battle, sitting with her back against a massive cycad and listening to the distant sounds of combat.  She does not see as a seven-pointed shape, identical to the one that appeared in the sky, draws itself in midair off to one side of her and a black-robed figure steps forth, tall but slightly hunched, as if his shoulders were too big for his neck.  The STRANGER abruptly speaks.

STRANGER:  "Pathetic fools, aren't they?"

LILIAN whirls about in shock, stumbling to her feet and backing away.  As when she was scared before, however, she doesn't utter a sound, not wanting her solicitous cousin to come running.

STRANGER:  "Be at ease, child.  I mean you no harm...quite the opposite, indeed."

LILIAN:  "How did you get here?  Who are you?"

STRANGER:  "Do these things matter?  It's not important.  What you need to know is that I sensed your power as soon as you came to this primeval place.  You have a very old soul, and this is a refuge for things from an earlier, more glorious age.  A time before self-righteous meddlers and meaningless laws; a time when you could look up at the stars and feel truly alive.  A part of you remembers such times, doesn't it?  Longs for them?  But more, longs to be powerful, meaningful, not just one face lost in a crowd of teeming imbeciles, but a being of majesty and grace, ruling over the wild things of the world.  Do you not feel so?"

LILIAN (breathless):  "Wow...I didn't think anyone else 'got it'...."

STRANGER:  "Here.  Take this."  He hands LILIAN a smooth, black crystal, which she takes hesitantly.  "It is a relic of that older, purer time; it will reshape itself to suit your dreams, and grant you the ability to fulfill them.  Just gaze into the blackness within, and it will gaze into your own dark soul, see the beauty and glory within you, and bring them to life.  I must go, now, but I will find you again, after you have claimed your place as this world's ruling Matriarch."

LILIAN pays no attention to the STRANGER as he withdraws and fades into the darkness, her gaze fixed on the black crystal.  Camera zoom tightens on the crystal and her eyes in an overlapping effect, one image growing as the other shrinks; at the halfway point, they switch places, and as her eyes zoom back into view, a feathered mask adorns them, identical to a doodle she was sketching in her notebook back on the plane.

MATRIARCH:  "Yes...I see now.  The creatures of the air, the agents of Death...I envied them.  And now, my will can rule them all...."

The Matriarch - 70 HP

EXT - VOLCANIC FIELDS COMPLETELY CLEARED OF BOTH CARRION AND OBSIDIAN BUT SOMEHOW THERE'S ICE

As the birds renew their attack against the heroes with even greater ferocity, their scaled ancestors rejoin the fray as well, attracted to the multitude of free snacks.  As several avian voices squawk in terror and agony, a preternatural scream of anger, in a feminine octave and echoing with stentorian reverb, tears through the sky, making Legacy reel at the epicenter of the fray.

No, she is; I apologize if that was unclear.

EXT - FORMER VOLCANIC CARRION FIELDS

As if by some dark magic, the brambles part before THE MATRIARCH and she strides out of the forest into view, laughing triumphantly and moving with regal grace, surveying the FREEDOM FIVE like so many insects.

MATRIARCH:  "HAHAHAHAH!  You naive, idealistic fools!  You thought you came here to discover the secret of this place, but it is I who have found the heart of its power!  Now, the dinosaurs and their descendants alike are mine to command!  Tremble before my glory!  Suffer as I have suffered, listening to your patronizing prattle!  My children will blot out the sun and plunge you into the night of eternal despair!"

Lilian has just reached the peak of her ranting when Tachyon, finished smacking all of the birds out of the sky, runs up and slaps the Mask off her cousin's face.  No sooner does the teenager bark a retort than the ring of feathers sprout back into place from between her eyelashes and the Mask reappears around them.

Wraith, are you planning to Throat Jab this turn? Just trying to sort out if I want to use Next Evolution this round, and if so, what to choose. Fowls deal projectile damage, the Matriarch deals psychic retaliation damage, and Carrion Fields deals projectile damage. So I could choose psychic damage and then Tachyon could do an accelerated assault in peace, for instance.

Raptor pack missed - Mega Computer (x2) in play has essentially nerfed them.  They can go eat carrion.

dpt - AZ healed to 27 hp in his turn and is high HP.  So he would take a few retaliations before he dropped far enough for Next Evolution to block the rest.  I'll Throat Jab this turn and then pound the Mask, Matriarch, etc. like I did last turn.  So you can go with something else if you want this turn.

At least there's one good thing about this match - I don't actually need the Matriarch's physical deck at all anymore, it was stacked two rounds ago and now I can just keep working through what's left of it until it shuffles (not that it will).  Still, this post had to wait until I had Insula Primalis handy.

EXT - FORMER VOLCANIC CARRION FIELDS

Only one person is smiling as the Freedom Five quickly and efficiently takes down the misbehaving Lilian.  That person is the STRANGER, who lurks in darkness far away from the site of battle, unobserved by all as he smirks in satisfaction.

The Matriarch - 40 HP

In Play

Trash:  Carrion Fields x2, Darken the Skies, Horrid Cacophony, Darken the Skies, Mask of the Matriarch, Building of Rooks x3, Kettle of Vultures x2, Clattering of Jackdaws x2, Unkindness of Ravens, Murder of Crows x3, Unkindness of Ravens, Clattering of Jackdaws

Deck:  Kettle of Vultures, Darken the Skies, Unkindness of Ravens, Horrid Cacophony x2, Murder of Crows, Unkindness of Ravens, Darken the Skies, Muninn, Clattering of Jackdaws, Darken the Skies, Huginn.

Start of Turn

Play a CardKettle of Vultures enters play; Unkindness of Ravens to the bottom.  Darken the Skies; Horrid Cacophony to the bottom.  All the birds come back one more time.  Oh right, Take Down.  All this can happen next turn, if there is a next turn.

End of Turn

In PlayKettle of Vultures, Mask of the Matriarch [9], Building of Rooks x3, Kettle of Vultures x2, Clattering of Jackdaws x2, Unkindness of Ravens, Murder of Crows x3, Unkindness of Ravens, Clattering of Jackdaws Nothing

Trash:  Carrion Fields x2, Darken the Skies, Horrid Cacophony, Darken the Skies x2 plus all the in-play stuff except the first Vulture.

A slight complication occurs.

Round Four

Insula Primalis

In Play:  Nothing

Trash:  Velociraptor Pack, Obsidian Field, Pterodactyl Thief, Velociraptor Pack (x2?  I can't tell what happened with the third.)

Start of Turn:

Play a Card:  I am confronted with a choice between Enraged T-Rexes.  I'll take the one on the left.

End of Turn:  Rex bites Legacy for 5 [20].

In Play:  Enraged T-Rex [15]

Trash:  Velociraptor Pack, Obsidian Field, Pterodactyl Thief, Velociraptor Pack (x2?)

Deck:  4 x ?, River of Lava, Volcanic Eruption, Pterodactyl Thief, Obsidian Field, Enraged T-Rex.

Raptor Pack #1 - Appeared and died in Round 2. (Wraith thrown knife)

Raptor Pack #2 - Appeared in Round 4 to eat a fowl.  Killed in Round 4 by Tachyon's Hypersonic Assault.

Raptor Pack #3 - Appeared in Round 5 - damage blocked by Mega Computers in play.  Killed in Round 5 by Tachyon's Accelerated Assault as part of "and everything else dies".

And I think Bunker Flak Cannoned and Grenaded The Matriarch after AZ took her down to 40 HP - His turn indicates her down to [31].
