Devra couldn’t take her eyes off the news coverage.

All those people, all that destruction, it was too much.

The others were right, they couldn’t have stopped it, they were no match for that fleet.

She understood why they were heading for the portal, wherever it was.  She understood the prison rescue, she had always understood why the Scholar had left her to be captured in Egypt.

That didn’t make her feel any better about it.

The only hope anyone had now was fixing this in the past.  This world, her world, was dying.  Ra’s staff, The Rod Harry carried, and the Scholar’s stone.  They were all needed for the portal to work, Nightmist, The Visionary, even Harry had risked their lives and hers to free Ra.  They had one shot, go back in time, save this Legacy guy’s father and stop some madman named Baron Blade from creating this hellish reality.

She thought of Amanda and her mother, maybe they could both be saved, maybe when this was fixed Amanda would have a mother who loved her.  Unity could fight for that.

*Loud noises*

Suddenly the Bus wretched into the air, and an explosion rocked the air around them.

"Leave Legacy, get Ra!" Wraith yelled through the smoke and fire. They had to keep Ra safe, no matter what.

Haka pulled the doctor free of the wreckage, then looked to see a helicopter landing roughly twenty feet from the bus.

"Hello Friends," a voice came over a megaphone, "I am pleased to announce you will all soon be dead."

Episode 5:

Number of Heroes: 3-5

Available Heroes: Haka, Mr. Fixer (with rod), Nightmist, Tachyon, Visionary, Unity, Wraith, Scholar.

Villain: Ambuscade special edition

Environment: Rook City

Special Rules:

1. When a trap is shuffled into the dack by its text play the top card of the villain deck.

2. Ambuscade has a dog, his name is Fido. Information to follow below:

3. Ra is a hero target with 10hp, text on the card reads:

"Place this card next to a hero target, when Ra would take damage that hero may take the damage instead."

"At the Start of a hero turn, a hero may take Ra and put him next to their hero card."

"If Ra reaches 0hp the heroes lose the game."

Ambuscade's Dog, front side.

FIDO, Gene-Bound Doberman.  (H)x4hp

This card is indestructible.

When Fido reaches 0 or fewer HP, return this card to the villain play area and flip this card.

The first time each round Ambuscade targets a Hero Character Card for damage, or damages a Hero Character Card place Fido next to that hero, that hero may discard/destroy up to (H)-1 cards, If (H)-1 cards are not destroyed/discarded this way that hero cannot play cards, use powers or deal damage until the start of the next villain turn.

At the start of the turn if this card is in the villain play area play the top card of the villain deck.

At the start of the villain turn return this card to the villain play area.

Second side.

FIDO, licking his wounds.

This card is indestructible.

At the end of the environment turn shuffle the villain trash and reveal cards until a device or trap is found, put that card into play or under this card.

Personal Cloaking Device cannot be put under this card.

If there are three or more cards under this card, put those cards in the villain trash and flip this card, restoring it to full HP.

Sorting out some rules and such with Fido:

The effect on the first side goes off even if you don't take the damage, it goes off before redirection takes place, or if the target is immune.  If Ambuscade cannot deal damage it will not trigger, which will cause the start of turn effect to take place at the start of the next round.  If Ambuscade targets a non-character card it does not trigger, but if that damage is redirected to a hero character card it will trigger on that hero.  If Ambuscade damages a non-character card hero target, then targets a hero character card it will trigger on the character card.

The hero who is targetted gets until the start of their turn to decide, they can post their decision and action(s) at that point.  They can't draw a card on someone else's turn and then discard it to fulfil requirements, but if they do met the requirement they could then draw cards they would have drawn on other player's turn.

On the second side:  I will announce on the environment turn what card Fido finds, the very first responder will decide what happens to that card (in play or under Fido) then I will continue on to the villain turn.

Feel free to ask questions if you have them.

As always first come first serve.

Unfortunately, while I've been wanting to join the campaign, this isn't a good place for me to do it.  I would have been happy to be in the Omnitron / Block fight if not for its inclusion of Nightmist, who I wasn't ready to play online two weeks ago (since then I've gotten enough extra games with her to be comfortable doing it); the simple "agents are Devices and vice versa" twist is one I like.  Fido is a twist I do not like, even if not paired with other changes to a villain I still consider fairly respectable (yes he's weak compared to most other villains, but he nearly destroyed me last night, so he's not harmless; I'd put him about on a par with Baron Blade, who IMO doesn't need any help at all).

One or two small tweaks and I'm in, but something as sweeping as adding an entire character card (and not a half-incapacitated one like the Operative, but one with two full sides like a standard villain), PLUS an alternate loss condition AND upgrades to Ambuscade...it's just way too much for me to have any hope of keeping track of during PBF.  If we were all sitting at a table and you wanted to play with your homemade Fido card, I might consider it, but I'm definitely not up for this.  Have fun, y'all.

I'll take Fixer with the rod. Opening hand: Pipe Wrench (x2), Bloody Knuckles, Charge.

Is the Rod's power just the standard rod power, or is it that super-duper irreducible thing? And I guess Fido's start-of-turn effect happens on the very first turn of the game?

It is the normal power, as the Rod isn't being wielded in the tomb now.

Yes it goes off first turn.  This fight will actually be quite tough, which is a rare thing for Ambuscade, but I like it thematically that he has a super mutant dog beast that Voss gave him.

The scene was chaos, the Bus was ruined, the heroes pulling themselves and allies from the wreckage, and behind them the sounds of sirens.

"Take Ra and get to the plane, we will hold them here." John Rhodes looked at the Visionary and nodded.  He took Ra from Haka and ran into the city.

Unity ran with him, Nightmist and Slim were with them.  She looked back, Tachyon, The Wraith, Haka, The Visionary. . . more sacrifices, more people left behind.  She would make sure it wasn't in vain.

. . .

Navigating Rook City was a dangerous prospect at any time, but being hunted through the streets, that was a new experience.

The sounds of fighting were far behind them now, but getting through the city to the airstrip wasn't going to be easy.

They turned a corner, and there he was.

"Hello again, shall we dance?"

Going over it I'm changing the rules a bit, dropping the discard/Destroy from Fido from (H) to (H)-1, so for this game it will be 3.  Also setting his HP from 20 to (H)x4, so 16 for this fight.

Also Ra is starting with the Scholar since he is highest HP.

Running through the streets wasn't helping.  The man Hunting them stayed on their tail the whole time.

"In here!" yelled Nightmist as she barged through a gray metal door.

"No!" Unity knew this area, and that was not a good choice of doors.  Sadly her cry was too late to stop her allies from entering the warehouse.  Inside was an interesting collection of thugs, criminals and low-ranking super powered villains.

"We'll get a pretty reward for this lot." someone called out.

Sorry for the long delay! I was out of town last night, and forgot to warn you all.

I’m also think my HP calculation is slightly off: The projectile damage from the turret on Ambuscade’s second turn should have been reduced by 1, so I have 16 HP. I could also take Ambuscade’s damage on Round 3, which would put me at 15 and give Nightmist 2 more HP.

If Nightmist or Scholar builds their HP up above me, I can play Bloody Knuckles, but as it stands it would hurt a great deal.

Mr. Fixer

HP: 16

Nightmist, can you possibly take out the Sonic Mine on your turn? The Grease Gun is still in effect, so it won't hurt us for once, and then we can start doing all-target damage (Oblivion…). For instance, you could discard to redirect your Investigation damage.

Umm, I hate to say this, but Ambuscade's damage is irreducible on this side. Also, the "In-Play" summary at the end of turn seems to be out of date. Doesn't Fido act at the end of the Environment turn? And why didn't he discover any of the many devices or traps in the trash?

EDIT: Never mind on some of these questions, the Automated Turrets are not Ambuscade, and the trash was shuffled into the deck.

EDIT: Updated now. The Plating is at 4HP after my turn, and I have Overdrive still in my hand. My apologies for not reading carefully enough.

Use a power: Bot Hack - destroy Pipe Wrench to bring out Raptor Bot
This happened before your turn.  You would have dealt 2 with rod, 1 with strike and 1 with strike, since you didn't have wrench or the bonus from Harmony.  The Reactive Plating would have been at 4 HP actually.

We can redo this somehow if you figure it out.

OK, so I can now easily take out the Reactive Plating on my turn, but the rest of you will have trouble getting through its DR. If someone hits it for even one point, then I can switch tools to a Jack Handle and take it out and then hit Ambuscade. (Unity, you could blow up my other Pipe Wrench if we go this way. I'll be doing 3 damage to all targets that way, so then you should leave the Automated Turret at 4 or 5HP.) Or, if you all manage to kill the Reactive Plating before my turn, I can switch to a Hoist Chain and reduce Ambuscade's damage. If neither of these works, I can use Overdrive this turn.

Another option is that Falling Statuary deals irreducible damage, so could also take out the Plating, but I suspect we'll want to hit Ambuscade at least a little before then.

EDIT: It seems that we decided that Nightmist hits the Plating for 4-2 to 2HP, then Scholar hits one of the Automated Turrets. Can I propose the one at 8HP, for maximum effectiveness for a potential Jack Handle or Overdrive?

Yeah, sorry, I was going off your previous statement about Pipe Wrench being available.  The other option is I could Bot Hack Starshield Necklace instead of redoing everything

So to summarize:  Currently Plating is at 2 HP, Turret #1 is at 6, Turret #2 is at 8 and it is Nightmist's turn.  Fixer can JackHandle everything for 3 irreducible on his turn, and we want to leave at least one target w/ 2HP or less to take the hit from the statue.  My bots will do 3 and 3 damage at the end of the turn.  Just wanting to make sure we are all on the same page

With Dr. Tramata's help the heroes turned one of Ambuscade's traps against him, the falling gargoyle smashing one of his robotic turrets.

"Tsk tsk, our game is for you and me, not for these peons."  Ambuscade laughed and swung up onto a fire escape.

Alright, that resolves the unknowns from last turn, and Ambuscade is now at 25, (cryo bot still hits after Nightmist's redirect)

Astral Premonition reveals:

Armed and Dangerous (reveal till you find a device, put it into play then play the top card of the villain deck)

Vanish (put Personal Cloaking Device into play and flip Ambuscade)

Unity, could you maybe bring out Bee Bot instead? I'm going to be destroying the Hand Cannon with Jack Handle damage, and it would be fantastic if Bee Bot could take out Charged Attacks after it damages Ambuscade but before it damages us.

I had been planning on an Overdrive this turn for a Salvage Yard next, but it sounds like people want their cards back now, so I'll do that.

I think there's a really good chance we can kill Ambuscade next turn if he doesn't Vanish. But, like you say, that's a known quantity we can survive. EDIT: If Unity does bring out Bee Bot, he'll be down to 18HP after my turn. If we do go with Vanish, I'm going to play Grease Gun next round, assuming that the rest of you can take out the Cloak.

Unity already discarded to destroy Blighted Streets.  Fixer just wants her to set up for destroying charged attacks with Bee Bot.

But I think Unity is trying to keep Raptor Bot alive by playing Stealth Bot so Raptor can eat the cloaking Device and be around for the Bot Rampage coming.  (since Amby will be going stealth this turn and try to kill Raptor)

The problem is if Fixer plays salvage yard he has to not attack to keep Bots alive due to Charged Attacks, since 3 damage to all targets will kill a bot no matter what (and a second will die on Amby's turn)

If Fixer doesn't attack, Custom Hand Cannon's damage will be 3 irreducible and be dealt to Nightmist, who can redirect to the cloaking device, and Stealth Bot can eat the 4 irreducible that Raptor would take, leaving all the bots alive.  Next Turn Unity would need to throw Bee Bot, and Scholar and Nightmist would have to resist destroying anything until then.

Since Amby will flip and become immune to damage, and the -1 damage will go away (so riveting isn't a help this next round at all) Fixer sitting on his hands in his junkyard is proabably the best option.

I would suggest a different approach to Charged Attacks damage.

Since Charged attacks can trigger multiple times, and it hits villain and environment targets you could drop personal cloaking device to 3hp, then finish it off like you did.  Then re-order Charged attacks.

Charged Attacks hits Racketeer for 3 [10], then Automated turret for 3 [5], then hand cannon for three [x], destroying hand cannon and triggering Charged attacks.

Charged attack2 hits Racketeer for 3 [7], then Automated turret for 3 [2] then Bee Bot, which destroys Charged attacks (ending all the damage) and deals 2 to Automated Turret [x], dstroying it.

Leaving Racketeer at 7hp and the rest of the field cleared.

Bee Bot is all kinds of win.

phantaskippy, I think it's a little better than that: I think Bee Bot does damage before destroying the Ongoing card. So Bee Bot would do 2 damage to Automated Turret [X], triggering another Charged Attack on the Racketeer before it gets destroyed.

Except now I'm confused: would the Charged Attack hit Bee Bot again? That doesn't seem right. And if not, it seems that one round of damage would get through to us. It might be simpler just to have Bee Bot hit the Racketeer, to avoid having to think too much.

Heedless Lash is a spell, so you also got HP back from playing that. Not that it will matter.

Yeah a hasty Augmentation - Dino chomp time ends the game.

Unity can even use another equip to summon Turret bot for fun.

Just get to wait for her to make it official.

“What’s wrong, not so tough now are you jerk?”  Unity yelled at the tied up unconscious figure of the Hunter.

“And you can get out of here you freakshow mutt!”  Unity threw a rock at the dog-like monstrosity, chasing it around the corner and out of sight.

“You ready to get out of here?” Nightmist asked the others.

Mr. Fixer nodded, “Hopefully the others made it to the airstrip already.”

“I was wondering,” Unity started as they hailed a cab, “how did you know where his cloaking device would be?”

“I am a paranormal investigator, I can recognize patterns.” Nightmist replied, then leaned her head back and closed her eyes.

. . .

They arrived at the airport to see a nervous Haka pacing back and forth.

“You made it, that is encouraging.” He said as they carefully piled out of a very cramped cab.

Wraith flipped out her cell phone “Peanut Butter Jelly Time” she said into the phone.

Unity groaned, “Really?”

Wraith looked perplexed, “Tachyon chose it, she found it amusing, I don’t understand why though.”

“Where are we going anyway?” Unity asked, changing the subject.

Scholar put his finger over his mouth and shook his head.  Unity didn’t pursue the question.

Planesreadytogogetonboardwe’retakingoffnow, whowantsapopsicle?” Tachyon sped by them into the plane.

“Everyone on board, single file and no pushing.” Haka said cheerfully, licking a popsicle Tachyon had brought him.

“And we’re going to save the world?” Nightmist said with a wry smile.

Everyone seemed cheerful, even with Ra injured, Expat dead and Legacy and Ryan Frost abandoned things somehow seemed positive.  For the first time it seemed that they just might do it, they just might save the whole world.

. . .

“So is it okay to discuss where we are going?” Unity asked Harry.

“Atlantis.” was his reply.

“What, the alien place from the History Channel?”

“It is real,” Visionary interjected, “John found it years ago, he and Mack have been exploring it, they found the portal and devised this plan.”

“We were just waiting for the legendary heroes to come, we knew we’d never pull it off without them.” Ra added.

“You were waiting?  Everyone thought the Heroes were a myth,”

“Not at all,” Visionary explained, “Ramonat was the original time traveller, he warned of their return because he knew they would be unaffected by the time line change.  They would return to find this world instead of their own.”

“Okay, so they defeated him, and he came back and messed up the whole world to what, set a trap for them?” Unity was still confused by this whole mess.

“Basically that is correct,” Wraith joined in, “Baron Blade as we know him came back to kill our leaders father to get revenge and to set up a new world for Legacy to return to, he wanted to be here to greet us, to rub in his victory and destroy Legacy once and for all.  He just didn’t plan on dying in that plane crash.”

“Please put your seats back in the upright position and put on your parachutes, and someone grab me some nachos.”

“Parachutes, what?” Unity did not like the sound of that.

“We can’t land on the island in this plane Devra , so we are parachuting in.” John handed her a pack.

“What about the plane, how do we get back?” Devra was starting to panic.

“The plane will crash in the ocean,” Nightmist informed her, “ we aren’t going back.”

“So the wings would be expendable right?” Unity asked, a smile forming.

Tachyon smiled and patted her on the shoulder, “Go to town girl, just make sure we are clear first.”

Devra watched the others jump out of the plane and waited for them to be clear, then reached out with her mind and began removing and reforming all the metal she could manipulate.

She thought of the friends she had lost, and the people that were trapped in Megalopolis.

“We’ll set this right.”

COMING SOON:

Sorry there is no vote for where we go next, but it is pretty set for the next few fights.

So here's a non-important thing to vote for (It won't affect anything, really, trust me :smiling_imp: )

I vote D.

But I'm in no way affecting the outcome, only seeing what it might be. Spoiling the surprise for myself does nothing to change things or spoil it for others.

Fair enough.

Might I be able to get in on the next chapter, assuming it's houserule-light?

I'm hoping to open it tomorrow afternoon, and it will not be house-rule heavy.

Make sure you vote too.

B*

Everyone knows robo-weasels never repent. I would feed it fluffy bunnies so that they can mate, reproduce, and expand until the robo-weasel explodes from internal pressure.

Thanks to each of our five voters.

The new game will be coming shortly.

“That wasn’t quite what I expected.” Scholar said as they pulled Unity from the wreckage.

*cough**cough* “Sorry about that, just wanted to test my new shock absorption system, it seems it worked.”  Unity brushed herself off and looked at the remains of her Falling Rock Bot.

“Next time let’s test it in the lab.” Tachyon said with a chuckle.

“What?” Unity asked.

“In our world you work together in the Freedom Five building.” Wraith answered.

“Oh, yeah, I keep forgetting you didn’t come with us.”  Tachyon gave her a pat on the shoulder and turned towards a new person, someone blue. . .

“Mack, how’s the progress?” Scholar asked.

“We found the portal chamber,” Tempest stated, “but there is a problem.”

“What do you mean?” asked Tachyon.

“It seems something is alive in that area, Hello I’m Tyler Vance, and the guy over there is the Argent Adept, but you can call him Tony."

“Tyler is right, all our scans show the surrounding area is active, and heat signatures show multiple life forms inside.” Mack handed The Scholar some printouts.

“We think we can avoid them, but it will take time to tunnel under.” Vance said, unfolding a map.

“I’m afraid we don’t have time for that anymore,” The Scholar interjected, “Our flight here was a hurried affair, we may have company before long.”

“Well then, let’s get down there and see who’s home.”

(Nitpick: Tempest is really more of a green.)
