When Vengeance and GSF are released, why don't we all converge on GtG and have a launch party. If this would be too difficult, we could have them in various cities throughout the world. If this won't be possible, we could have a bunch of Hangout games. We do have a little while to plan this, anyone have any good ideas?

I personally like the idea of converging on St. Louis and having a fan-planned launch party. Not sure it they'll actually be able to make themselves available for it, though, given they'll be trying to get product out the door, etc. It's probably worth asking, though! :slightly_smiling_face:

And if we can't, we can definitely do local/online events.

I'd be game for doing an online launch party, if we wait a few days:  I imagine that, given all the trials and travails of shipping, there might be some delay in actually getting the copy, regardless of KS or pre-order.

It would be pretty cool if there were to be a St. Louis lauch party. Have no idea if I would be able to go, but I would most certainly do my best to get there.

Being given SOTM promos. Having someone pay for me to become a playtester. Cake. Interestingly-shaped meeples. Puppies.

Six words: CGI IRL.  Much easier to pull off than controlling that many birds (without a Mask).

Pretty sure I've seen people at cons carrying more disproportionate quantities of Styrafoam than that for cosplay purposes.

I MIGHT be able to set up a road trip with some of my fellow sentinels from Louisville and make the 4 hour drive to St. Louis for this. I'm bumping this.

A friend recently moved to St. Louis, just a few blocks from the >G warehouse, so I am definitely in for a release party, even if the trip is long.

Any further news or planning on this?  I'll need time to get transportation and days off squared away.

Events that should happen (let's make it a full day of fun!)

Tour the offices and warehouse (complete with akward photos!)

Cosplay Karaoke.

A Larp, just in case someone dresses as Tachyon so we can make them run a lot.

Freedom Five cookout reenactment (real food, for historical accuracy)

A night on the Town Wraith style, complete with getting arrested and most likely hospital trips when we fall off buildings or miss throw grappling hooks.

Crashing the Moon into the Earth

Duck Duck Goose

On a serious note, if a release party isn't set up for St. Louis, Evan and The Fancy Crew are still itching for a road trip, so we've agreed that our Plan B would be to make a drive up to Indiana to join the Indianapolis Team! If those fine folks (Rabit, Imprimis, Arenson) would be up for a get together with us Kentuckians.

The >G folks have said they are very interested in having something happen, but I haven't heard any details. Most likely they've had higher priority stuff going on.

But if they aren't able to get something going in St. Louis, I think doing something in Indy is definitely an option. If nothing else, we can research renting a room here at our aparment complex that has some tables (including a pool table, actually), a kitchenette where we can have food and drinks, etc. I have no idea how much it is, but I know it's available. If not, there are other options (like the basement of one of the local game stores that has some great gaming rooms).

Mind you, I think it's highly unlikely they won't do something. :sunglasses:

Seriously looking forward to it!

I meant dressed up as in suits/dresses, but hey, I'd love to see some costumes. Sadly, I don't think I'll be finished with my Tachyon costume by the time the party happens.

That was my first rule I told my friends coming with me: "If you're coming on this road trip, you're dressing up nice. We go in style, ladies and gentlemen."

However! I do KNOW someone who has a GoPro and a Canon T3i, so I might convince him to bring those things along with us so we can get some footage of the people who go. We won't be able to do a livestream, but I'm sure we can get some highlights from the party and have some "hellos" from those of us forumites there. As long as no one is camera shy.

Here's what I've learned about providing a live stream:

Option 1: Google+ Hangout

  • Created by going to G+ and clicking on 'Start a video party' in the lower right.
  • Can invite the public -- make it so that anyone with a G+ account can join the G+ Hangout.
  • The URL for the Hangout can be found and shared (via forums, Twitter, Facebook, G+, email, etc.)
  • Only ten people, however, can be in the Hangout at any one time.
  • People in the Hangout add their own audio/video to the Hangout, and can use a group chat interface inside the Hangout.
  • People outside the Hangout can not see or hear anything, as far as I can tell
  • One or more G+ posts or YouTube videos can be linked to the Hangout so that people outside the Hangout can comment and those comments would be seen by the creator of the Hangout. Comments could then be selectively displayed to the Hangout.

Option 2: YouTube Live Event, via Google+ Hangout on Air

  • If you have been blessed as worthy, there will be an option in YouTube's Video Manager to create a Live Event
  • Creating the Live Event results in both a YouTube video and a Google+ Hangout.
  • The G+ Hangout is like the above in option 1 except that you can not invite large groups, much less the public, to it.
  • The YouTube video shows the G+ Hangout with a several minute delay.

Option 3: YouTube Live Event, via custom encoder

  • Haven't explored this much. Apparently you can download free software to encode and broadcast your video stream without going through Google+ Hangout on Air, but I don't see how doing so is going to lead to any more interactivity between viewers of the stream and people delivering the stream.

Having thought about this a bit, I see the following potential goals:

  1. Allow remote people to see the fun that's happening
  2. Allow remote people to post messages that will be seen by other remote people and by the Vengeance party
  3. Allow remote people to videoconference (share their own audio/video) with the Vengenace party
  4. Allow remote people to play games with partygoers

If we just want to do #1 (see the party) option #2 (YouTube Live Event) works. I don't see a way to do #2 (share messages) with either option above. We can do #3 (videoconference) for up to nine people with either option. For #4, either option would be fine.

My current thought is to split the ideas of people playing the game from people watching/interacting with the party. We already know how to have games online. That's basically option #1. We could do that with a dedicated table and computer for a given game. For everything else, perhaps we could set up a station with a camera with a wide view of the party, or even someone with a tablet walking around.

My questions for people who will be remote:

  1. Do you want to be able to play games w/ people at the party?
  2. What else might you want -- see the party, post messages, videoconference in, something else?
  3. Anybody have good ideas about how to make this happen?

I'd like to play a few games (us remote people likely won't be able to play Vengeance heroes, but we can still play), chat to some people, see what's going on, etc.

Of course what I'd really like is to be there in person, but a couple of transatlantic flights is well out of my budget. But let me know if I can help with anything remote!

I live in Kansas, so I'm probably just going to drive home after the event.

Also, does anyone know if we should bring our own copies of the game to help out >G?  I know they have ALL of the Sentinels, but I imagine they don't want to crack open a bunch of games for just one night when practically all of their guests own at least some of the cards.

Right, so, if there's a computer plus webcam available for people to possibly use over there, I have a simple plan that should work.

I set up a generic G+ account, which doesn't belong to anyone and thus avoids potential issues of privacy, etc. You guys over there sign in to that account, I do a G+ hangout and the generic account and other virtuals join. That way people can pop in and out and chat and maybe even play an online game, and we can virtually meet. Sound sensible? Anyone up for that?

AR
arenson9
2014-02-01 01:20 UTC

I have no privacy concerns. I could just log in from my own account.

My concerns are (1) That we won't have a computer located in a useful place. Is there wirelessin the building? Is it any good? If not, where/how can we run Ethernet? Is there a computer w/ decent processing power? And a web cam? And some reasonable way to keep it from going to a screen saver if no one is attending it?

(2) What would be useful to actually do with that computer? Mixing a live party w/ an online party is a difficult proposition, I think. Those of us who are there are going to be interacting with each other and I think that interacting with the computer will, after a few moments of novetly, prove more distracting than fun.

Both of the above might be helped by discussing and coordinating with the GtGs guys, but the reality is that they are too busy.

I think a nice idea would be that instead of trying to add a remote interaction component to the Vengeance release part, GTGs might want to do a later, public hangout w/ whomever wants to join as a sort of second, online Vengeance hangout. They might do some sort of demo of Vengeance. They might have a device that allowed them to walk around and show off their offices or the warehouse.

I understand that notion. We'll see what's possible (depending on how the wifi there is) and if all else fails, I'll be doing a personal travelogue of our trip there, and I'll make sure to give shoutouts to my favorite forumites.

I'd be willing to haul around a laptop with a stream if no one else wants to do it. I suppose we'd do it in the form of a G+ hangout. Seems simple to me. Assuming the best wifi is available, I'll make a post on here at the beginning of the event saying when the stream would start.

We're not trying to brag that we know information that you don't--I'd absolutely love to share the singular new fact that I found out while at the party. I'd have loved to have taken pictures and posted them all over the forum so we could all share in the excitement.

But that's against the rules. We're not mocking you. It's a joke.

It's starting to look like allowing a small group of people access to information that the rest of the community can't have may not have been as great an idea as it seemed... ;)

Well we also might need to wait a bit for it to process.  I know I was dying for news and updates before it was even over, might need some time before people find out what is cool or not to share.

Okay, that's fair, I guess--if edict has come down from the devs not to share, I'm not going to argue.  It would have been nice to hear that earlier, though!

I apologize if I've come off as needy or whiny when it comes to finding out about Vengeance.  I'm an admitted fiend for movie spoilers and the like and, having missed the Shattered Timelines/Vengeance Kickstarter--I was unemployed for several months through summer and fall--I'm not likely to get a hold of Vengeance until sales go live again.  Any bit of information or conjecture gets me excited.  As most of you are, I'm pretty heavily invested in the SotM universe and I love seeing the >G guys succeed; it gives me continued hope that a small independent games developer (*raises hand*) might make it big.

Is there a date associated on when information can go live or info what can be shared?

SPOILERS:

I'll tell you this, since Vengeance is out now--it's looking heavily like we're going to see a Neo-Elf villain in the WotC expansion. There's one on the box, and an alien arena in Parse's deck that features what appears to be a Neo-Elf's face.

EDIT: Spoiler tag.

It's actually unclear to me whether or not we are allowed to share the Easter Egg stuff we saw.

It also feels a little weird talking about the Vengeance cards or box. We went to a release party, so it's released, but the Kickstarter rewards haven't been sent out yet. I'm pretty sure it is ok to talk about it. Just feels a little weird.

The party was fun. It was very informal. There was no schedule beyond start and stop times. it started off with people trickling in, picking up games, and in some cases introducing themselves to people they'd only ever interacted w/ online. Paul was often at a table helping people pick up their games or packing Kickstarter boxes, often with Jodie. Christiopher and Adam were circulating. There were half a dozen tables set up in the front of the warehouse that filled up with people playing Vengeance. There were also games going on everywhere they could be fit into the office area -- the conference room, an unused office, the front lobby, and a wide hallway.I'm pretty sure we had ten simultaneous games while also having other people socializing, so I'm guessing the attendance was round 50-60 people.

All the office spaces were open and people wandered in and out. Paul has an office with some beautiful Lord of the Rings art and weapons mounted on the wall. The spare office has a bookshelf filled with fantasy miniatures. Christopher and Adam share an office with their desks facing each other. On one end Adam had hung eight gorgeous, framed comic pages. It wasn't Sentinels. I didn't recognize it. I don't _think_ it was his art work, but am not sure. There was also a whiteboard in their shared office. It already had a large line drawing of Baron Blade on it. Adam drew Legacy on the other side, while I held up my laptop so the people who were interacting via G+ could see him in action.

Reckless showed up with his perler (sp?) ... uh ... artwork? (not sure how to describe these). These are individually great, but even more impressive as a collection. Evan and his friends were doing various film/interview things and Evan coralled the forumites for a photo. Who knows what I may have missed, as well. You certainly couldn't see everything that was going on from a single vantage point.

Towards five, Christopher announced it was time for dinner. Those who had the time and inclination (~30) regrouped at a nearby Indian restaurant for a tasty buffet. Our carload of people left before 7, perhaps a bit earlier than we might have otherwise, in order to try to outrun the freezing rain that was overtaking the area.

I spoke to people who'd traveled from Fayetteville, Kansas City, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Columbus. And Brocolli. Who's from Texas, but he flies enough that maybe it wasn't very onerous to take one more trip. I'm not sure where else people might have travelled from.

It was pretty low key, but quite nice.

The sad thing is that I never actually got to play a single turn cycle during the entire event. I was too busy talking to people and filming things for the entire four hours. Still, had an absolute blast and would love to do it again.

*grumbles about >G being in a stupid foreign country with all the distance and shipping costs forcing me to wait til a boat arrives and the UK distributer ships stuff out to stores and then they ship to me and I don't even know when that will be and it doesn't seem to be happening any quicker even though I check all the game stores I know multiple times a day and it's really very selfish of people having things I want somewhere where I can't get them yet when they're things I really really want and lots of other people have them already and I don't*

Mail rechecked: one letter from Virgin Media addressed to the boyfriend (presumably about our cable/broadband package), a seed catalogue for me (obviously the company has conveniently forgotten that I haven't bought anything from them for at least five years), and a hand-delivered menu for a local pizza/kebab fast food place.

None of this appears to be Vengeance.

I tried playing, but Pizza/Kebab Place incapped my hero team of Virgin Media and Thompson and Morgan in the third round. Virgin just Demanded Payment and T&M merely showed Pizza/Kebab Place what a Beautiful Garden it could have with these Exclusive New Double Pansies. Pizza/Kebab Place played a Mixed Donner Kebab With Garlic Mayo and Chilli Sauce (no onion), four back-to-back Meal Deals and finished us off with a Free Bottle Of Soft Drink With Every Order over £20.

If that's Vengeance, it sucks.

Right, today we have a circular from Hope Education (I bought plastic 1cm cubes from them a while back for PnP purposes) advertising interactive whiteboards. And a clothes collection bag from a breast cancer charity.
