Prologue:  Six months, six months. . . Legacy thought as he paced the ship.  Baron Blade had been on Mars for six months.  By all calculations they would arrive too late.  "Sir, we'll make it, they'll stall him long enough," the lieutenant tried to reassure him.  "I know Soldier, just anxious to get to work," Legacy knew the soldier didn't believe that any more than he did.

How Baron Blade could disappear for six months, a full six months before they found him.  Even then it wasn't the F5 team, or even the CIA who found him.  If that sub-contractor had delayed in filing his tax statements they wouldn't have pieced it together until the Baron made his demands.  As is they got a 5 week head start.  All those false leads and missed clues, and with so much on the line.  Hopefully there would still be an Earth to save.

Number of Heroes:  3-5

Required Heroes:  Legacy

Banned Heroes:  Omnitron-X, The Visionary, The Scholar, Chrono-Ranger and all promo cards.

Villain:  Baron Blade, special Scenario version.

Environment:  Wagner Mars Base

Special set-up:  Baron Blade starts with 2 mobile defense platforms in play.

Special Gameplay:  End of villain turn discard the top (H)-1 cards of the villain deck.

Game does not end if Terra-Lunar Impulse Beam succeeds, instead Baron Blade flips.

At flip the changes for the second side will be revealed. (It's still a fight to the death)

So if you want in call out your hero, we want a good number of F5 heroes, but 1 or 2 friends works well too.

The team in order:

Legacy:  grysqrl

Fanatic:  PlatinumWarlock

Wraith:  dpt

Absolute Zero:  cmschex

Tachyon:  BlueHairedMeerkat

This fight is a nasty one, and intentionally so.  The story doesn't end if you lose, you know shattered time and all that, there are six possible endings to this fight, and each has a pretty good chance of occuring.  Each takes you on a very diffrerent path.

Disclaimer:  I am not a good writer, decent story teller, but not a good writer.  So bear with me.

then the other takes Wraith or Haka.  Fight amongst yourselves.  If no one responds I'll go with Wraith over Haka, just because.

Heroes (in order)

Legacy:  grysqrl

Fanatic:  PlatinumWarlock

Wraith:  dpt

Absolute Zero:  cmschex

Tachyon:  BlueHairedMeerkat

Legs and AZ need to post opening hands.

Feel free to roleplay a bit if you want, there will be some story to start, at flip and at the end.  Maybe some words in-between too, who knows.

For the first fight it will help if you have priorities as a hero, since we aren't on earth the fight will go on if the Earth is destroyed, so you can decide (no need to broadcast it) if you lean towards surviving or if your hero would willingly die to save the planet.

At the start of the story (where we are now) the timelines have not shattered.

Are we playing with the Advanced or standard Baron Blade, plus your modifications? Can you remind me the condition for the Impulsion Beam to activate?

Also, if we reduce him to 0hp the same turn his trash overflows, does it avtivate?

They were slowing, the reverse thrust was a very strange sensation and the weak gravity didn't feel weak after so long being weightless.  Legacy looked around, the team was ready.  Lt. Vance had been missed, no one was better at balancing the personalities of the freedom 5.  As lucky as they were to have Helena with them, her and Frost didn't get along so well, and both had ended up spening most of the trip in isolation.  Dr. Stinson had offered to "get out and push" more than once, and reminded the pilots at least once a day how long it would have taken her to run to Mars.  Wraith had handled it the best, she had money invested in some of the research that had been going on before the Baron arrived, and her thoughts were more on the people she had sent there than those she left behind, she spent most of her days training for low gravity combat and reviewing blueprints for the various remodellings of the base.  Legacy couldn't blame any of them, he was homesick himself, but more than that, he was worried that they were too late.

They had been able to monitor transmissions for the first half of the trip, but it was now 3 weeks since they had gone silent, even listening could tip off the Baron that they were closing in.  Legacy silently cast a prayer to whomever might listen, and prepared himself for what lay in wait for them at the Mars Base.

. . .

So much for the element of surprise.  The recorded greeting was bad enough, but having still warm tea waiting for them at the airlock was just insulting.  Fortunately Wraith's time studying the blueprints had yielded some good results.  There were two service tunnels that had been abandoned and didn't show up on any blueprints from the last two years.  The Baron hadn't checked that carefully, and with a bit of sneaking around they were closing in on the orbital control center, the only place where he could rebuild his Terraunar Impulsion device, at least according to Dr. Stinson.  The Baron had started the countdown as soon as they had entered.  "I don't know what will be more satisfying, seeing your face when you fail to save the Earth, or killing you afterwards!" the base echoed with the taunts Baron Blade hurled at them, at him.  He knew the Baron was trying to make him angry, he knew he needed to stay cool headed and focused to win, but he also knew that all this was aimed at him.  Baron Blade wasn't going to destroy the moon and most of the planet to take over the remnants, he was doing it for revenge.  At least the Earth was still OK, and Baron Blade's wish to see Legacy face to face would soon be granted.

ROUND ONE

Baron Blade

HP:  40

In Play:  Mobile Defense Platform [10], Mobile Defense Platform [10]

Trash:

------------------------------

Start of Turn:  Less that 15 cards in the villain trash.

Play a Card:  Devious Disruption no Equipment to destroy, each hero takes 3 lightning damage.

End of Turn:  The top 4 cards of the villain deck are discarded to the trash.

HP:  40

In Play:  Mobile Defense Platform [10], Mobile Defense Platform [10]

Trash:(5)  Devious disruption, Powered Remote Turret, Blade Battalion, Flesh-Repair Nanites, Backlash Field.

Effects:

ET:  discard the top 4 cards of the villain deck.

Static:  Baron Blade is immune to damage (Mobile Defense Platform)

Hero Status:

Legacy:  28

Fanatic:  27

Wraith:  23

Absolute Zero:  26

Tachyon:  24

Baron Blade flips when he hits 0hp, and the check for 15 cards in the villain trash is the first thing that happens during the villain turn, so it would not be possible for those events to conflict.  Advanced Blade gives a discard of (H)-2 at End of turn, I upped that to (H)-1 and added the second defense platform.  You have three rounds until he wins, provided he doesn't get all three hasten dooms early.

Baron Blade steps over the remains of his Mobile Defense Platform.  "You'll have to do better than that if you want to save your Earth Legacy, maybe this will help motivate you!"  The Baron throws a glowing red vial at the heroes, it shatters and the air fills with a sickly sweet smell.  With a push of a few buttons on his wrist another defense platform moves in, shielding Baron Blade from the heroes attacks.

Doing some quick math, we can potentially bring Blade to 0 hp by the end of Tachyon's next turn if a) he doesn't get any DR on this villain turn, b) Tachyon manages to get at least one Burst card into her trash via Rapid Recon and/or the Pervasive Red Dust discard and c) we focus on simply throwing out as much damage as possible.  I can muster 11 on Fanatic's turn; Wraith can pull 7, AbZero can pull 9--all hinging on Legacy's continued buffs.  Tachyon could pull 8 this round, followed by more the following round, but it'd mean holding off on using both Lightspeed Barrage until the very last possible second (next round).

It's going to be a close one...

With a last crackle and a fizz the Terra-Lunar Impulsion beam was destroyed.  The Earth safe Legacy turned to face Baron Blade, "Give it up Blade, it's over."

"No, Legacy, this isn't over, this is far from over."  Baron Blade furiously punched keys on his control panel then turned back to the heroes, "Your time is at an end, but my time has just begun!"  As Blade put the helmet to his power suit on the Mars Base lights turned Red and began flashing.

"Self-Destruct sequence activated."

The Entire base started to vibrate with a strange hum, the entire room felt heavy.  Electricity arced across the floor and ceiling.  Whatever was happening it couldn't be good.

On Flip:

Baron Blade is restored to 30hp.

Trash is shuffled into the deck and the Mobile Weapons platforms removed.  Self-Destruct sequence enters play and the top two cards of the environment deck are placed face down beside it.

Self Destruct Sequence is indestructible.

Gameplay:

All the normal and advanced rules apply, Blade takes -1 damage, deals highest hp hero 5 energy damage at turn end.

Special difficulty mode rule:  At the start of the villain turn, play the top card of the villain deck.

Time Cataclysm deck enters play.

Time Cataclysm special rules:

Time Cataclysm will have its own turn called the time cataclysm turn, ll references to environment on Time Cataclysm cards only refer to the Time Cataclysm turn, and time cataclysm cards.

Rift in time# comes into play, it will remain marked (#), that card is indestructible unless it is the only time cataclysm card in play at the start of the time cataclysm turn, at which point it destroys itself and the game ends.

Main Computer Room and Oppressive Smog enter play.

Explanation:

So something is wrong, and it involves the base being in self-destruct mode and also some type of time distortion.  The heroes need to defeat Baron Blade while managing both the self-destruct possibility and the time cataclysm event.

The time cataclysm deck and Wagner Mars base operate independently, they do not effect each other (except that they treat each other as non-environment/time cataclysm targets), hence not calling the time cataclysm deck or turn Environment.

The time cataclysm deck starts with two cards in play (other than rift) so you don't lose right off the bat.  Time Cataclysm will play between the Environment and Villain turn.

This may seem needlessly complex, but it fits the plot.

The best option is to just beat Blade as fast as possible, if the fight drags out at all the rift and self-destruct will become a problem.

Current Status:

Blade:  30hp (cannot deal damage)

In Play:  Blade Battalion [5]

Trash:  Mobile Defense Platform (3)

Mars Base

In Play:  Fire in the Biosphere, Self Destruct Sequence (indestructible)

Trash:  Pervasive Red Dust

Self Destruct countdown: 2

ST:  1 player may discard two cards to destroy fire in the biosphere.  If the countdown pile contains 7 cards the sequence is aborted, otherwise discard the top card of the countdown pile.

ET:  Fire in the biosphere deals each target 2 fire damage, then each hero may destroy 1 ongoing card or take 2 fire damage.

Special:  At the start of a hero turn a hero may skip the rest of their turn to put the top card of the environment deck onto the countdown pile.

If the Countdown pile is ever empty the base destructs, game over.

Time Cataclysm

In Play:  Rift in Time#, Main Computer Room [9], Oppressive Smog

ST:  If Rift in Time# is the only Time Cataclysm card in play the cataclysm envelops the base, game over. Destroy one Time Cataclysm card. (rift in time#) Each player may draw a card. (computer room)  One player may discard one card to destroy oppressive smog.

ET:  Play the top card of the Time Cataclysm (Rift in Time#), Play the top card of the villain deck (Main computer room)

Static Effects:

Baron Blade takes -1 damage (Blade advanced)

-2 to hp recovery (oppressive Smog)

I think it's the Environment turn now--all those cards being played were the side-effect of the Baron flipping.

I could discard for Fire in the Biosphere, although it's painful. On the other hand, it's damaging the Baron as well, and we're going for speed here.

I'm under the impression that it is now the environment turn. Environment/Villain display was an update in response to destroying the Terralunar Impulsion Beam - nothing actually got played (except self-destruct and the new environment showed up with some cards already in play). Tacyhon then played, so it should be the environment turn now.

Environment: Fire in the Biosphere hurts us way more than it hurts Baron - we should get rid of it. I can discard Back-Fist Strike and Surge of Strength if necessary.

Time Cataclysm: At the start of the Time Cataclysm turn, do we want to destroy Main Computer Room (in which case, we don't get extra card draws, but neither does the villain) or Oppressive Smog (which I don't think affects us all that much right now)?

Okay, I see now.  We didn't actually take damage or the like; it was just explanation.

I would have no issues discarding for the Fire in the Biosphere (I'd probably discard Divine Sacrifice and either Embolden or Final Dive), though Wraith is probably better equipped to take the hit, given the 2 Trust Fund cards in her hand.  That 4 damage per round will add up fast on us, with only 1 net damage hitting the Baron.

Let's please have Rift in Time destroy Main Computer Room--the last thing we need right now is more Villain plays.

grysqrl--I'd definitely recommend keeping BackFist Strike, as we need pump out damage fast.

Speaking of Main Computer Room, shouldn't Tachyon have gotten 3 card draws on her turn? Edit: Also, she has a number of bursts in her hand, together with the 2 Lightspeed Barrages. Things needing resolution:

**Someone needs to discard two cards for the fire in the biosphere destruction.

Someone may discard 1 card to destroy Oxygen Leak (deals toxic damage to all targets at ST{currently 3})  this card also is shutting down AZ

If no one skips a turn this next round for self-destruct sequence it will go off at environment start of turn (game ends).  Doesn't need resolution, just a reminder is case you can't win this round.

One player may discard to destroy Oppresive Smog (reduces HP recovery by 2)  probably hurts Baron more than you at this point

**Each player Must put one card from their hand on top of their deck.

**=must happen

Status:

Baron Blade:  24hp, take -1 damage, cannot deal damage.

Blade battalion:  1hp

Legacy:  21hp, take -1 damage, lead from the front

Fanatic:  16

Wraith:  16

It looks like you can win this turn:

If you give Tachyon the single discard for Synaptic, she can put Hypersonic on top of her deck then on her turn she plays fleet of foot then two barrages, even if the fleet of foot draw isn't an extra burst you are looking at 10 damage from her.

That leaves 14 (if baron doesn't play something nasty like living shield or nanites), Legacy has two damage from Thokk, Fanatic has five, which leaves 7 for Wraith and AZ.  AZ has impale and thermal shockwave, which should be worth at least 7 with the blade battalion and mutant as targets.

This is all dependant upon what Blade does of course.  Just saying Tachyon discarding synaptic might be a good option.

Ok so working theory right now:

Legacy:  probably surge of strength to top of deck.

Fanatic: discards divine sacrifice and final dive to destroy fire, puts embolden on top of deck.

Wraith:  Trust fund to top of deck

AZ:  Probably Isothermic to top of deck, since it is a duplicate.

Tachyon:  Discards synaptic for Oxygen leak, puts Hypersonic on top of deck. (she will draw it with FoF, so even if things go south she has that)

I don't think it will make a difference if someone really needs to switch one out so I'm going ahead with the villain turn.

The Mars Base was engulfed in chaos.  Fanatic had finally gotten the fire put out, Tachyon had managed to repair an oxygen leak almost as soon as it appeared while fending off the Blade Battalion, and now they had the Mad scientist cornered.  But with the hum in the air and the countdown getting perilously low, the heroes had not yet won.

"Surrender Blade, there's no reason for us all to die here."  Legacy tried one last time to reason with the Mad Baron.

Baron Blade, still staggering from the shot the Wraith had given him, tried to throw another of his red vials at the heroes, then charged them, his suit sparking like a Tesla Coil.  Unfortunately for the Baron his throw was badly aimed and his charge ill-executed.  The vial, easily knocked away by the Wraith's quick reflexes, rolled harmlessly away from the heroes, and a quick patch of Ice landed the Baron face down on the floor.

"Watch your step." Ryan Frost chuckled as the Heroes closed on the Baron.

"Victory Music"

CONGRATULATIONS!  YOU HAVE DEFEATED THE EVIL PLANS OF BARON BLADE!

Baron Blade lay on the metal floor, His soldiers scattered, his work undone.  Tachyon delayed the self-destruct sequence and was working on deactivating the program.  The hum though. . .

"Alright Blade, This time we'll send you where you won't be coming back."  Legacy said as he approached his enemy.

"Never," The Baron spat, coughing up blood.  "This is just the beginning. . ."

With that he pushed a button on his wrist and the hum that was vibrating the station grew higher in pitch.  The Baron began to glow and then with a rather loud pop, he was gone.

-----

The Baron was gone.  They had searched the base all over and he wasn't there.  No ships were anywhere nearby.  It bothered the heroes, but not too much, they had defeated him, and saved the Earth.  All of them were excited to return home.

The trip home was a cheerful one, at first.  Then the signals from Earth were all wrong.  Strange language, unknown encoding, lots of announcements about Curfews and rules where violations would be met with termination.

It got worse when Earth came within sensor range.  The planet was not the Earth they left behind.

The warships were Thorathian, Voss must have returned.  Somehow he had overrun the Earth in the time they were on Mars.  It didn’t make sense, there shouldn’t have been enough time.

Wraith wanted to land quietly somewhere, infiltrate undercover and learn what was going on.

Legacy would have no part of that.  They had Allies, and those that remained would head to Freedom 5 HQ.  The ship must go to the landing pad in Meglopolis so they could meet with allies and take the fight to Voss.

“Battlestations,” Legacy called, “We are punching through.”  Tachyon and Wraith left the room, Ryan Frost looked at Legacy questioningly, “Battlestations?  I’d never been on this ship till this mission.”  Legacy turned and looked at Frost for a second, then spoke: “Hang out here, watch this panel, if it says we have a hull breach, you go fix it.”  “You serious?” Frost replied.  “Yes, and Ryan. . . don’t fall out of the ship.”

If it wasn’t for the TCF Conqueror they might have made it.  Defense satellites were one thing, but a Thorathian Dreadnaught?   Their ship was no match.  They split up and launched escape pods.  Tachyon and Fanatic waited for Legacy, but instead the pilot arrived.  “Typical,” Tachyon muttered as she punched the ready button.  The doors sealed and the escape pod launched.  Tachyon set the coordinates for just outside Megalopolis.  No crash would kill Legacy, and if they were going to find him, they would need help.

“Let’s hope he was right Helena.”  Tachyon said aloud looking out at the skyline and the Freedom 5 building.

Ryan Frost made it into the Escape Pod at the last second, flinging as much Ice as he could at the crumbling hull while he ran.  The Wraith punched the button before he was even all the way in.

“Glad to see you too,” Ryan snorted.

“Strap in,” the Wraith commanded, “We are barely going to make it.”

Ryan obeyed and watched as she checked the fuel supply, then double checked it, typing on her little wrist computer furiously.  Then he looked out the window.

“Hey babe, Megalopolis is back that way.”

“We aren’t going to Megalopolis.” Wraith replied.

Ryan just whistled a long apathetic note.  It had to be serious if she didn’t react to being called babe.

The choice:

A) Let's find out what happens in Megalopolis.

B) Let's follow the Wraith and Absolute Zero.

Let me know, and Congratulations on saving the planet and defeating Baron Blade in rather nasty circumstances.

Favorite Moments were Fanatic crashing platforms into each other, Tachyon fixing an oxygen leak, decimating the Blade battalion and somehow attempting to hit herself and causing that to hit Bron Blade.  "Sometimes I'm so quick I confuse myself."  AZ letting loose the minute the fire was put out, coincidence I think not.  Also the most prescient Throat Jab ever.  That was a 27 damage turn for the Baron taken away, and 6 more for the backlash missed.

Everyone did a great job.

I vote B, because any interaction between Wraith and AZ is always fun

Nice story!

I was a little confused: how many Escape Pods were there? It seemed like the doors were closed twice. Edit: OK, now I see that Tachyon and the Wraith had separate escape pods, and that AZ ended up joining the Wraith in hers. You could make it clearer by specifying which Pod is being referred to, for instance, "Ryan Frost made it into the Wraith's Escape Pod at the last second…"

Can I object to this? I don't know if Dr. Stinson knows the Wraith's real name, but in any case I don't think she would use it casually like this (even alone). At least she would get Maia's name right.

Both sound fun, but I'm also interested in B. Are we going to see both eventually?

Add in a third vote for the Wraith/AZ excursion. Legacy and company can take care of the Thorathians; I want to see where Wraith is going.

Oh, and count me in on the next episode!

Fanatic's name is Helena… at least as far as anyone knows…

EDIT: Nevermind. I was beaten to the punch.

But, but, did Tachyon get her tea?

Yeah, it should be Helena.  Sorry for that.

I actually played around with revealling the Wraith's identity, since they were all on the spaceship for so long, but I decided to just leave it.

Looks like B it is.  We will not play out the other side, but if things go right we will meet up with them again soon, either the same or from different timelines, you never know.

This was a great read you guys.  I'm very inexperienced with forum games (done only one), and don't have access to Rook City or Infernal Relics, but I might like to get in on a future game.  Although I'm easily intimidated by extra complexity, so I hope there won't be quite as many special rules as there were in this game (souped-up Baron Blade, indestructible Self-Destruct, AND modified Time Cataclysm?)...one or two modifications per game is enough IMO, as it's not like SOTM isn't good enough at melting brains already.  Still, if you do a scenario that seems handle-able enough for me, I'd be very interested in joining.  I might play Ra, Chrono-Ranger, Unity or the Visionary...I also like Omnitron-X and the Scholar, but I think they'd be too complicated to try out in my second-ever forum game.
