I had a great time last night on Skype attempting to defeat Cosmic Omnitron with a couple other forum-goers.

I think it would be fun to arrange regular, Skype-based meetups, but I see two major challenges:

1) To have more than two people on a Skype call requires that someone pays for premium Skype.

2) If more than a handful show up, we'd need to organize in to multiple games.

Is there interest in this?

Thoughts on the best way to handle these challenges?

What would be the best times for the meetup?

Er… no it doesn't.

I regularly play in RPGs over Skype (as in at least once a week) and they feature 4 or more people all using the free version.

I wouldn't mind expanding my Sentinels playing and joining a regular game via Skype.

EDIT: Ahhhhhhhhh! I think group video calls require a paid version of Skype, definately not neccessary for a card game.

SECOND EDIT: I really do recommend that people take a look at the Vassal module it's really very useful for online play.

I'll have to find a place to host the files I made to add in the other heroes (it's still not playable without owning a copy of the cards themselves).

Want to share instructions for how the uninitiated would use a Vassal module? If so, I'll happily give it a try. If not, it might be a while before I make the effort to figure it out for myself.

If Skype meetups do become a regular thing, I would love to join in the fun. Though I did download the Vassal and I wasn't too thrilled with that, so the likely hood of me joining in on that is unlikely.

Whoops! I appear to have not responded yet.

Buh?

It's just an electronic table to keep track of your cards, why would that stop you from playing over Skype?

Sure.

I've just spent 20 minutes trying to think of how to put to gether instruction and without going needlesly complex I can't think of anything more than

  1. Download Vassal

  2. Download module

  3. File->Open (select the sentinels mod, this step only needs to be done the first time you install each mod)

  4. File->New game

  5. Play!

I'm sure they'd be individual questions to answer over decks and such but it's be clearer/quicker to answer them 'in person' over Skype

Does it need to be video chat? Would voice chat be enough? If so, there's a free vocie chat one called RaidCall. I probably won't ever be able to attend due to time zone differences, even though I like the initiative, and would love to.

I was wondering that - surely video-chat is unnecessary? I don't have a webcam anyway. Playing Sentinels over Skype could be...interesting. Would people type in the chat which cards they have out, or something, so people don't lose track? I suppose tracking bonuses and hp and stuff would at least be pretty easy as you could just type it in the chat window. I don't have a huge amount of space here in my room to get zillions of cards out but I could try ;).

No idea how this would work. Apparently, with this Vassal thingy you can keep track of cards and such. I don't have any room at my comp for laying out cards either, and I can't get Skype to work on my tablet anyway.

According to this daily server status, people have been playing yesterday. It was probably past my bedtime, because when I was logged in, there was no one there. I would be playing from GMT+1 btw, in the evenings.

I have a regular person to play with - we'll be getting in a few games tomorrow evening, loads on Saturday, and quite a few on Sunday if this weekend is anything like the last load of weekends :D. My dad's seen us playing and has expressed an interest so we might actually have an extra player for at least one game over the weekend.

If the possibility of playing a game over Teh Internets ever comes up, I have a feeling timezones may be a problem for me, but if it happens that a game comes up when I'm available, I'm certainly interested :).

We could also do Google + hangouts. Those easily allow for multiple videos, so it would work well. You can even schedule them ahead of time and just add links for people to follow, so you don't have to add people and arrange for sharing of IDs, etc.

I'd be happy to try a skype/G+ game this Sunday, Nov 25th. I'm likely available throughout the afternoon and evening, with some advance notice. If anyone is serious about arranging this, pick and advertise a time. I know how to use Skype, but not how to set up a G+ hangout, so someone will need to take responsibility for setting up and explaining to me how to use a G+ hangout if we go that route. I am in the EST timezone (eastern).

If this is happening, as Arenson has mentioned it'd be good to know a time. And a timezone too, please, so I can check what time that'll be for me and therefore whether I'll be able to make it. I don't have a webcam but I don't see why one would be needed, so that's okay :). I have Skype, as mentioned. I have a Google account (which only gets any use because since they merged with YouTube it means both those accounts are the same thing, and I check my YouTube homepage every day to see if any of my subs have added anything new :D), but dunno whether that's the same as Google Plus.

I'm game for a game this sunday around the afternoon. Looks as though no one who is free during that time knows how to use google +. I'm sure it won't be too entirely hard to firgure out. Unless someone here has a Skype memebership thingie-ma-bobber? I'm available all the way up until 2 p.m. central time, which would be 3 est, right? So I may toy around with goole hangouts tomorrow and see how it works unless I pro pops up and says they got it covered.

A few people would need a camera on, mainly who ever is hosting the Villian/Environment decks, so that way it can easily be kept track of, rather than one person using their deck to play then anyone else digging in their decks to lay them out so they can remember what is in play.

I have been toying with Google + Hangouts and it isn't hard at all. So now to agree on a time and I think we can get this started. Like I said before I am available until 2 central, so anything before that is golden in my book.

Well, those who can't/don't want to get their cards out can just keep a Word file open or something, with a list of cards (and descriptions if necessary). Video chat isn't necessary, and I don't really think voice chat is either - we can do everything in text, surely? Everyone just needs to make sure they announce everything that happens during their turn (and the villain and environment turns for whomever's playing as those). I'm on GMT so I think that means I'm about five or six hours ahead of most of you guys.

RO
Ronway

Of course not necessary to have video and voice, but it would be useful. Seen that it does have a screensharing feature, so who ever doesn't have a webcam could type up the cards on word or such so that way everyone would be aware of what they have and current HP without making a note of it. I think the kinks will be worked out tomorrow though, see how things play and such.

Just to shoot out a time, tomorrow, Sunday the 25th of November at 11 or 12 central sound good for anyone?

Nope, that sound too long to wait. Sunday the 24th is 2013.

But 11 or 12 tomorrow sounds OK (That's GMT-6 for us internationals).

And again I suggest people look at Vassal, it has the Sentinel cards already in there so you can see what everyone has, no need for lists or trying to keep track that way.

Did one person get declared "Head Sentinel" and control the Villain and Environment decks while everyone else played heroes?  Or did one person control the V & E decks with a Hero as well?  Were seven people each manning a deck in a full game?  Gah, the possibilities are so numerous!!!

AR
arenson9

We used Vassal, which meant that we could all see and control any of the decks. There isn't enough space on a monitor to see everything, so there's a certain amount of shifting back and forth between views, which I didn't like as much as being able to see all of the cards in play at a glance.

The file we used for Vassal allowed one to draw from a deck, shuffle a deck, and put cards into a hand, into a play area, or into the trash. It also allowed for manually adjusting hit points.

We nominally had one person in charge of manipulating the villain and environment decks, though I was impatient enough to break that when doing damage to villain targets.

One of the things I've noted is that it would be convenient if the players that played first and last did _NOT_ control the villain and environment, giving them, instead, more of a chance to think of their own actions and cards immediately before/after their turn. At a table, that's sometimes problematic, since the people playing the first and last hero are often the people sitting next to the villain or environment, but with Vassal it's not an issue.

As something of a tangent, I have found it very useful to have each player talk through what they are doing as they play, so all of the other players have a better chance of keeping up on what is going on (as well as alerting the person playing if they are doing something wrong).

One of the things that was mentioned as a problem was the card size, they were taking up a signifigant portion of the screen... if only I had remembered that vassal has a zoom in/out option it wouldn't have been an issue!

Well you could download the vassal thing. There may be a time we try it out again, but I do want to try using the actual decks next time around, especially with the limited selection of the heroes, villians, and environment were on there. Granted someone could use Vassal for their hero while someone else used own deck at home, the Vassal user would just have to use the ScreenShare so that way everyone else could see it. I think I may be available all day Tuesday (I say I think because I know I don't have work but my wife may have plans for us) so anyone wanting to try then would be fine by me.

Wow, I just realised I was looking at the wrong time when I checked to see when this game had happened - I was looking at the time under the "joined date" of the person posting before me, not the time the post was made, which was around 5pm my time. So had I not been busy, I would have actually been around for this, lol. All my forums lay stuff out differently, so I have to look in different places on each one to see stuff such as the time a post was made.

As for talking through what you're doing when you play...well, I do that anyway - how else are the other players (or, single other player in my case) supposed to know what you're doing? Or what the villain/environment is doing, comes to that. Playing a game online, I'd probably just get out the decks that people are using, plus the villain and environment decks, so I can look at the cards but would probably also have an on-screen list somewhere to track hp more easily since I can't really fit loads of cards and my dice on the desk I'm using. As long as every card is announced as it's played, as is every instance of damage/healing, I think it'd be pretty easy to keep track of things.

Then again, I'd actually need to be online at the right time to catch people for a game. What happens if more than five people turn up? Split into groups?

Sorry I missed it after instingating it. I had compouter problems, and woke up late. Instead I discovered a gaming night at a cafe in Montreal. Tought 3 francophones (one who wasn't too good with English) the game! I had to translate (with a little help form the newbies) and had a blast. We decimated omnitron (We had inspiring prescence out first turn, and Expatriette got her pride and prejudice out turn 3). Essentially we decimated omnitron. Second time Plague rat ate us like turkey dinner.

So, how did the game go?

Also, is a Google-Plus account different from a normal Google account? Because I have one of those but never been on Google-Plus. The only reason I have a Google account, I think, is 'cause it and YouTube use the same login details now, so if I'm logged into YouTube then I'm logged into Google. And I check my subscriptions every day (Yogscast is a busy channel!) so that'll be all the time, then ;).

Having a Google account likely means you have a Google+ already set up, you just have to log in.  That said, I really don't like the idea of Google+ (I really don't even like the idea of Facebook, the only reason I have an account is that I set it up so long ago because it had a standard unmodifiable layout (which made it much better than MySpace already) and I had a couple friends that sending Facebook messages was simpler than email (for them).  And that was about 6-8 years ago.  Today, I wouldn't sign up for Facebook either.

Well, hopefully I'll happen to be checking the forum at the right moment when people have just posted that a game is being set up, and it'll happen to be at a time where I can actually join in (as opposed to about two minutes before I log off to go to bed, or something ;)). Maybe one day I'll be able to join! I also have Skype so if anyone who plans to set up a game happens to be on there, I don't mind if they add me. That way we'll be able to see when each other is online and see if something can be set up over on Google or whatever ;). Was there a reason Google was preferred over, say, Skype? Is there some feature that makes it more conducive to playing a card game? I gather from a comment above that it has a chat window…but Skype basically is a chat window. Or is it just that more people have Google accounts than Skype?

And yeah, video isn't really required, it just depends on what you choose. I used video just because I didn't have a problem with it.

My programming years have made me a bit of a typist, so text chat is not that bad for me.  That, plus I feel akward talking via an electronic means (I even will never use pickup windows at restaurants or go to Sonic).  Also, I like privacy, and don't like the fact that what I speak into a microphone can easily be heard by someone in the next room or down the hall (I even walk out to the back yard when I talk on the phone).  So text is so much better for me than voice.

I'm not a fan of voice chat. I've found everyone just ends up trying to speak at the same time 'cause you can't tell when someone else is about to say something. And it's easy to miss something someone says, or not have a chance to say anything at all. If you're typing, you can't miss a message because it's all there on the screen and you can just read it in your own time. Also, it can be bloody distracting if I'm trying to read something, or whatever.

I'm sorry but you have found poor groups of people then!

I have played RPGs over Skype for more than 5 years now, and yeah, there's a learning curve for each new group of people, but it's really no different than a conference call on a phone, you pay attention to verbal queues and learn peoples' speaking rhythms, just like you do in real life. We've played two games so far and we were still hesitant when we played sentinels but it was an easier transition than some groups I've played in, particularly over Google+ because I could see people over their webcams and see when people were leaning in (as if to speak).

It's not the same environment as playing face to face and it does lose something significant but it is a far better option than text, you can get so much more out of hearing people than you can from 'flat' text.

Hmm... Four hours until game time and I only see one person up for a game. Maybe a post of remindance of the time will help people want to play.

At 1 p.m. central time on November 29th (which happens to be today) I will be hosting a game via Google+. The more the merrier, well... Not after five people, then complications begin. So at least 3 other people can be accepted.

I'd love to join, but I've got classes today and I just got an email saying I have/get to move out of my dorm into a better dorm by tomorrow. So I'll be able to play online with no background noise finally!

And yeah, Ameena, you've clearly been playing with the wrong people. When I've played online, everyone just talks when appropriate, so if you ever play with us, you'll see how much better it is. I don't have problems distinguishing people's voices from one another, and when playing Sentinels, we just talk when we've got something to say. We're never shouting over each other.

I haven't ever played anything via voice chat. Well, I had two people in my Skype chat once when I was playing Minecraft, but that was different. And there were only three of us. About the only time I've voice-chatted was the two or three occasions I joined the Teamspeak channel for the gaming group I used to go to. Everyone would be talking about stuff and even if I thought of anything to say, I didn't want to butt in so basically just sat there and didn't say anything. Like I said - you can't see who wants to say anything 'cause you can't see them (though Teamspeak has a push-to-talk function where the icon beside your name changes colour when you hold in your chat button). But that was just general chatting - I can't remember if there was a particular reason I was there. Something club-related, maybe planning for a game at a future club session or something. Anyway, right now I have a Skype channel open to someone else so I wouldn't be able to join a Google-Plus one as well anyway ;).

Well, anyway...maybe I'll get a chance to join a game. Like I said, I suppose it's just a matter of me having the luck to be checking the forum right after someone's posted that a game is shortly upcoming. I suppose I should actually check timezones whenever anyone says what time it is where they are but I can't always be arsed to open another window and Google for a page that shows a timezone list. Mind you, since pretty much everyone seems to be in America, I suppose all I have to do is add on about five hours from any time suggested by anyone and I'll be pretty close ;). That and check the post time of the forum message. Right now it's nearly 6:30pm UK time.

Maybe I'll have a look at this Google-Plus thing (just for the purposes of Sentinels games), as I've never been on it. It just sounds like Google's answer to Facebook, something I've never been interested in.

Okay, between this and the previous sentence, I've entered profile details for Google-Plus. My name there is the same as here, of course. So if anyone wants to add me, or whatever...presumably I'll get some kind of pop-up thingy letting me know of such when I go to the Google homepage or something (Google is my Firefox homepage anyway so I'm guaranteed to be there multiple times a day ;)).

I was a bit confused when your name didn't show as Ronway or something similar, but as it says that on your homepage thing I figured it was you ;). It's confusing when you see someone by one name in one place and another elsewhere. I just use the same alias all over the place, to make it simpler. I wonder if there's a way to rename people like you can on Skype, so you'll display as "Ronway" to me and I won't keep forgetting who you are...

I don't know what their policy is now, but, for a time, Google was requiring you to use your actual first and last names when filling out a profile, and you couldn't use an alias or handle.  If they believed that you were using a handle or alias as your name, they could disable your account until you supplied your real name, or prove that you are using your real name.  Another reason I've never liked the idea of Google+.

Skype uses your e-mail address. It's also possible to search for someone by their Skype name. If you check your profile settings it should list both of these somewhere so you can find out what they are :).

Personally I just plan on using actual cards for playing Sentinels online. Well, I'd have somehow laid out the deck of whichever hero I was playing, then the decks of other active heroes (plus the villain and environment) nearby in case I needed to check any specifics on their cards. Otherwise, I'd just keep a list open in Word or something with hp totals and whichever cards were currently in play in the decks that weren't mine. Vassal doesn't sound too good given that it doesn't even use the H-mechanic as it's pre-Enhanced Edition ;). Still, presumably you could use it to at least see the names of active cards. At least, if you were playing with decks that Vassal used ;).

Anyway, I suppose we can just meet up on Skype at some point and plan this stuff. And then play games and hopefully kick some arse :D.

I'm thinking either 9pm GMT tonight or tomorrow night for a game. Probably without Vassal; as nice as it is it won't match what we may want to play with.

As much as I think voice is the best way to go as it means I can focus my attention on the decks rather than reading and typing, I don't have a separate mic (only a combination headset with a single jack and separate sockets on the PC). Unless that is I can skype from an Android device which would actually be best as I would then have more freedom in where I set up. For this first one at least it will probably be text based.

Alrighty, we just finished our first online game! It was playe over Skype, text-chat only. Players were as follows…

Myself, playing Ra

Mezike, playing Fanatic

Matchstickman, playing Legacy

We fought Baron Blade in Megalopolis

Technically this was a pretty short game, but it took at least an hour or so because of the nature of playing such a thing over the Internet ;). There were no huge disasters, really. We had a bit of a mildly annoying phase where we had Hostage Situation come up (can't play cards), followed by another Hostage Situation right after we got rid of the first one, and then the following turn it was replaced by Paparazzi on the Scene (can't use powers). So that slowed us down a bit. I think Blade got seven cards into his trash before we flipped him. Might have been eight, but either way we had a while to go before things started looking dodgy :). By this point he also had two Living Force Fields (+1 damage soak) in play, which was slightly annoying but with Legacy's buffs, plus a Rooftop Combat followed closely by a Cramped Quarters Combat (both +1 damage, okay so we didn't have both  out at once), it didn't impact us too greatly. Eventually I got the killing blow. I ended the game on 10hp, and I think both Legacy and Fanatic had 16. Great fun was had by all and we intend to do it again some time!

Text was very slow, it took us about 90 minutes to play it... but it was still fun and it easier to keep track of HP and buffs etc as it was all right there in the chat log. I tried to keep in character for the game, which is easier over text.

The decks? Yeah I believe someone only has EE but we wanted to try a basic game because it was the first time we were playing this way, we didn't even play advanced as someone has not played an advanced game, ever(!).

Having played both voice and text I prefer voice, no real slow down in the action, easier to get your intent across to people and more sense of actually playing together but I don't think I'd turn down a game just because it was over text.

ME
Mezike

There was some good characterisation all the way through which the text really brought out, and keeping track of everything was easy and clear, at the cost of a slower game. The game was relaxed and I felt like I had time to get my cards and effects sorted without keeping everybody hanging on plus, on a personal note, I could play without turning my wife into a Sentinels widow, the value of which mustn't be underestimated

We went core as we wanted to keep things as simple as possible for the first go round, it's a familiar groove with a set up that most of us have probably played at some point so there were less surprises (expect for my terrible shuffling of the environment deck.) Now that we've made it work I think something more adventurous will be on the slate for next time.

In any case it was fun all the way through and the time flew by; I was about to suggest a second game when I looked at the time and couldn't believe that 90 mins had passed! We had quite a bit of chat before and after too which was nice, and a bit of in-character silliness at the end which I doubt would have worked as well in real life.

Some suggestions for running text based games would be to post your HP and ongoing effects at the end of your turn, and to name the next character as a way of passing play. We kept this up most of the time and it really helped to get a reminder of what buffs were active and who had the most/least HP (which informed my play as Fanatic a couple of times.) Once or twice we jumped in over each other, no big deal though and no worse than overtalk in a conference call. We didn't have a great deal of strategising to get through but that was probably more to do with the chosen decks than anything else.

All in all I think it was a success and I am looking forward to the next one. I'd like to try a voice based game, unfortunately my headset doesn't work with my tablet either so I'll probably be stuck with text until I can find a replacement. Buying a headset just to play Sentinels would be a difficult sell for me, having just broken my wallet on the kickstarter!

Hey Match, you don't have to say "someone" - you could just say "Ameena", you know ;). But yeah, haven't tried an Advanced game yet. Remember that I normally only play two-player games as we don't have a third player!

Anyway, yeah it was good fun - that random semi-IC silliness at the end was epic :D. Do people tend to make vaguely IC comments when playing cards and stuff, then? I just play it purely mechanically, calling out phases and declaring card plays and stuff. Never even thought of making IC comments, lol.

But yeah, looking forward to another game. I suppose it might be a bit less awkward using voice chat but I basically have a perma-voice chat open with someone else when I'm on in the evening...

Here I am, finally online...though I won't be on Skype tonight, or tomorrow, as I'm not at home right now. I won't be on Skype till I get home on Sunday evening.

But here's what happened in that game I played with Mezike last night...

It was about half ten when we decuded to play, though it took us a while to actually start playing, and we didn't finish till about 1am. Yeah, long game but very fun ;). So, we decided to go up against the MAtriarch, as Mezike hadn't played against her yet. He decided he'd play two heroes, so there'd be three heroes in total, and went with Expatriette and Tempest. I chose Mr Fixer, in the hopes of getting out Driving Mantis style in order to redirect any Fowl-destruction damage that I might be dealt. Finally, we decided on the environment, choosing the Tomb of Anubis with the theory that the traps would help us get rid of the Matriarch's stuff.

So, Tempest was able to reliably clear birdies with Squall on more than one occasion. Expatriette achieved the same with her Sub-Machine Gun a few times to. We had both cohorts out at one point, which was annoying, but managed to get rid of them eventually. I'd started with a Harmony carde in-hand but never actually played it. I also started with Grease Monkey Fist style, and played it (more to just get a style into play than because I wanted that particular style), only to lose it to a Horrid Cacophony on the Matriarch's next turn :P. That was the only style card I saw during the whole game but that was okay. I actually didn't do very much damage, but was able to be effective nevertheless. We never took any damage from Fowl directly, but we did from destroying them. Also, one or two environmental traps hit us on a couple of occasions. However, after losing quite a lot of hp over a couple of turns, we finally stopped at around the 10hp mark. Because I'd drawn a Grease Gun. I played this, to stop all the bad guys doing damage (except the traps, which aren't targets so are unaffected by the Grease Gun), which meant Expatriette (whose turn was after mine) could gun down all the birdies with no repercussions. On the following turn, of course, my Grease Gun was destroyed, so I just played the Salvage Yard card I had in my hand and got it back again, playing it again the following turn. I also then drew a second Grease Gun, so played that on the turn after. On Tempest's next turn, he got one of my Grease Guns out of the trash with a Reclaim from the Deep, so I drew that on my next turn. The turn after that, however, I didn't bother playing it because by this time Tempest and Expatriette had whittled down the Matriarch to 5hp so I used Strike to do her two damage (I had a Pipe Wrench out). Expatriette finished things off - she already had Pride in play (and had done for most of the game), so on the final turn she played a Quick Draw to locate Prejudice as well, and unleashed both guns into the Matriarch's face. BOOM.

Who says Mr Fixer and Expatriette aren't much good? ;) Expatriette probably did the most damage, while Mr Fixer, I'm certain, saved everyone from dying with the multiple Grease Gun uses :). We ended the game with Mr Fixer on 10hp, Tempest on 9hp, and Expatriette on 8hp. And we had a good time, even if we were both half asleep by the end :D. Things looked rather worrying quite early on, when there were about a million birds out and we had no protection, but we managed to deal with it and ended up kicking some feathery arse :D.

Text-based games over Skype are a bit slow, yes, but that doesn't make them any less fun :D.

I'm not going to say that he isn't good, but games where he gets only one Style and none of his others kind of defeat the thematic aspect of his ever-shifting-style-and-tool approach to combat.  At least he has Meditations in his deck.  Yesterday a friend had to get through half of his deck before he could find a Tool, as there is no way for Fixer to search his deck for an Equipment card.  That is atrocious.  I'm not gonna say the guy is bad, but when I can't even Mister Fixer my opponents as Mister Fixer, that is incredibly lame.

Any which way, sounds like you guys had an enjoyable game against The Matriarch!  That is phenomenal!  Even on our good games against her, a lot of my Sentinels crew (myself included) find her to be rather tedious.

Good five person game today. Actually, two of them. We used only EE decks to accommodate the person who didn't have others and was new to the game. Took down Voss in Megalopolis and then decided to tackle Voss agin, but swapping out most of the heroes for other heroes.

Text only. It worked, and has its charm, but it's slower than voice.

Lots of fun!

That first game was great, a classic and efficient villain dismantling. The second was a bit more sloppy and ran on for quite a bit. Memo to self not to start a game past 10pm with a slow building team!

One thing we discussed was the lack of 'table vision' where you can't see everything that is in play, how this impacts on strategy and requires additional dialogue as you have to ask more questions of the other players. Although this is a major contributor to slowing the game down I quite like the way it feels like a group of individuals coming together, you know what they are capable of but never 100% on what their current active abilities are. It was fun to see us making a few sub optimal decisions, then working things out after all, which was as enjoyable a challenge as when we fixed a team strategy and played it out effectively.

Vassal may have helped but is limited. Is there any mileage in a Vassal module that has the card names but no text, and limited artwork? i.e. the same base picture on every card with the card name, also making the cards smaller. In this way it would be possible to have the whole game manageable in Vassal whilst still requiring players to own a copy, it would purely be a module for tracking game state in online games. Just a thought, or we could investigate live document sharing so HP and game effects re more easily visible.

Has anyone added our games last night to the stats sheets? If not, I'll do that today.

Also, I noticed Skype has a share screens option. Maybe if one or two players have open a spreadsheet or doc with HP and cards on table we can do something about the visibility issue?

ME

Yeah, live document sharing would be a great way to go. It would be cool to run it with a stock image for each character so it isn't just a wall of text (not actual card scans, basically just an avatar). It's possible to paste images into excel then to put an HP counter in a cell next to it, with cards in play listed next to that. A bit of work for whoever is moderating but probably quicker overall if everything is visible at a glance.

Something like the attached picture for example, but with a space for Villain and Environment too.

Edit: I'm happy to do the build on the spreadsheet and distribute it to whoever wants to try running a game with it. I can add drop down selection (through data validation) to select cards that are going into play to save on typing. I'm pretty sure there is also a way to auto update the image based on selected character, I haven't had a need to do that professionally but vaguely remember doing something similar a few years back.

Ok great, I know I had some code somewhere in a spreadsheet that would make that happen but not on my current storage, and my excel work is steeped in crunching data with formulas rather than using VB. Do you want me to do the grunt work on the build then you can wave the magic VB wand over it? A collaborative effort :-)

Hello chaps,

I am that bloke who is new to the game with only EE and has limited knowledge of Skype.

It says a lot for the forum that a muppet like I can suggest a Skype match and it actually happen.

Kudos to Pwatson, Arenson, Ronway and Mezike for helping out a newcomer.

The actual play worked very well I thought. Skype text was fine.

Although new, i was pretty familiar with the heroes in the first game, and it was easy enough to visualise what was going on. I had never seen the heroes in the second game, and I found it a lot tougher. It's easy to play your own guy and to have villain and environment cards set up in front, but tricky to remember other hero's stuff - particularly if you have never seen them before. I reckon it would be a LOT easier with a bit of familiarity.

I quite enjoyed the effect that the less than perfect comms had. Mezike mentioned it earlier. It was actually like five people in a bit of chaos. Was then more fun to deal with the non-optimal choices.

All in all, good fun with a good gang. I'll play some more solo to get a feel for the heroes. I had pretty much no idea what AZ was up to mechanically , other than that he was building up to something thematically.

good game guys.

I use Vassal for war games and it is ideal as a tracking module. That is essentially all it is. The current vassal module looks great but is very  restricted, so probably not much use unless you are happy with a few heroes.

Mechanically Absolute Zero needs at least two cards to become extremely effect, those cards are Null-Point Callibration Unit (Whenever he is dealt Cold damage, he gets healed by that much instead) and Isothermic Transducer (Whenever he is dealt fire damage he also deals 1 target that much cold damage) so basically I went a little bit without the Transducer, so I was basically just healing myself for the first, probably 4/5 rounds. A lot of his cards has effects that does something then deals himself either cold or fire damage, sometimes even both. After getting those two there are a lot of options to choose from.

In the case of when I played HoarFire, I had originally stated that I would be full health on my turn, which I then switched to saying I will be the lowest. HoarFire deals 1 targer 2 cold damage. A second target 2 fire damage. Then himself 1 cold and 1 fire damage. Initially I was going to use the cold damage on myself, thus healing, and the fire damage to Voss. Then of course I would take the 1 cold and fire, which I would be able to hit Voss for cold damage again since I was hit by fire. But after remembering that Voss deals fire to the lowest, I decided it would be much more beneificial to be the lowest, so I then used the cold damage on Voss, hit myself with the fire damage, thus once again hitting Voss, followed by me dealing myself 1 cold and 1 fire damage and hitting Voss with more cold damage since I was once again hit by fire.

The scary thing is that the example I did was only one card. So many cards work together in his deck that cause so much going on in a single turn that he sometimes will need to take the time to think things out.

Themetically I like to think AZ's slow build is becausehe  doesn't care what is going on until the something happens that effects him toa  great deal. In our game it seems to be the defeat of Visionary since the turn following that is when I actually did damage, and not just a little bit of damage, a whole whopping 17 points worth.

Hey Ronway,

That post is just mental. I'd struggle to follow the sequence with the cards laid out in front of me, but I get the gist.

From a newcomer's perspective, it was very thematic. The team spent the first few turns battling minions and putting some hurt on Voss. AZ just healed himself. At the time, I thought it was pretty funny. I was HOPING that something was brewing, and that was proven to be the case with the 17 point damage turn.

In my mind, I could see AZ summoning up his internal energy over time them BAM! Unleashing it on Voss.

cool game

Well I've figured out how to do the automatic image change in excel and now have a working model! Very cool. I just need to put the card names into the database then I guess I ought to get some permission before actually using it anywhere (there's no game text or card art, just the card names). If anyone fancies taking it for a test drive I hope to have it done by the end of the weekend

Pic attached of what it currently looks like (a bit more tidying up to do - column O will let you choose between variants when playing with promo cards, the database isn't done yet which is why everything is labelled as Finest, nor has the Environment been set up yet. But you get the gist of it)

if you like, although it may be a lot of work for the moderator. It isn't automated as the intention is not to put any rules or game effects into the spreadie. My thoughts on the notes were for things like Visionarys cards that can be played on other characters, enabling you to remind everybody where that card should be, or if you want to highlight a damage buff for the other players benefit. It will remain an open text input in any case, although I am now inspired to add an automated Nemesis indicator!

I won't be able to make any games today, however I am pleased to announce that I have finished the spreadie!

I'm not going to guarantee that I haven't missed anything, plus as I do not yet have Unity or Ambuscade so the details for those characters are not yet in the database (offers of help with this will be appreciated.) I have also added the Shattered Timelines decks in readiness for the release ;-)

To clarify what this does, this is for tracking the game state, it is not an online or software implementation of the game. You pick the decks that are being used then the drop downs customise to a list of cards from that deck that can remain in play (there are no One Shots in the database as these are resolved at the time and do not need to be tracked). The absolute extent of information you will get are the card name and an indicator if it has either Ongoing or Equipment as a key word, so all participants will absolutely have to have a copy of the game to be able to make use of this. Innates and the Nemesis indicator automatically populate along with the avatar images.

I have designed this using very simple formulas and an easy to update database, so it should be very straightforward to use and difficult to break. MS Excel will be required, although if it all works out I may be persuaded to replicate this in Open Office at some point now that the most laborious parts are done.

I would envisage having one or two players looking after Villain and Environment as we have previously done, then another managing the game state as a moderator using this with their screen shared. Or one person doing all three, but it might be a bit of work if they are also playing a hero deck!

In any case I am will hold off distributing this anywhere until I get a nod that the content is acceptable, and I figure that Andy will read through this at some point which is a good enough place to start with that!

edit: Just noticed that I need to add a nemesis indicator to the Villain!

Yeah, there has to be a compromise at some point with getting everything all on the screen. I don't doubt that there will be challenges with use, but then you can always type the excess into the notes I guess.

edit: re Anubis I can easily add an indicator that looks for Nemesis indicators in the environments, and in any case there is the notes section to cover exceptions. I'm avoiding building something that tries to simulate the game too much so there will always be a bit of work involved for whoever is moderating, nor do I want this to turn into a never ending project with n-th degree tweaks!

Thanks Andy.

It looks like Skype will be a bit of a problem for using this method as a premium account is required to screenshare.

However Google+ Hangouts does allow screensharing for free with text and voice chat. While being shared excel starts doing a weird flickering dance like it's constantly refreshing although it isn't visible on the shared screen in the hangout, it might just be me or some settings that need to be tweaked. It's annoying but might not be an issue depending on how much time the moderator has to spend in the document. Most of the other sites I've seen that claim free screensharing are only free for a trial period, but I'm open to suggestions.

I'd like to try a text based game in this environment sometime during the week with anyone who is interested?

I asked

User 'Mezike' has created a helper application using Microsoft Excel that's designed for one person in a game to keep track of stats for an ongoing game. It's explicitly meant for people playing over Skype, G+, or some other remote system to be able to see a shared spreadsheet of current game information – HP and which cards are in play.

Christopher replied:

As long as that is all it's being used for, that's fine. We're very excited about this new push to collect data across games!

I clarified:

Just to be clear, this Excel program is not designed for collecting data across games. It is designed for a group of people who are playing over the Internet to all have a single spreadsheet they can look at that shows what the current HP of each in-play target is, and which ongoing/equipments are in play across all decks.

Does that change your answer at all?

Paul responded:

No, that is fine.

So, looks like we're good to go for distributing and using Mezike's spreadsheet. Woot!

Looks like games are going to start being played on Google+ more often then since Skype wants to charge for screen sharing and stuff. Here fairly soon we'll have to have to get everyone together who doesn't know how excel works (raises hand) to go through a brief tutorial of how to use it, so that way there will always be someone ready to go.

I've made it as user friendly as it is possible to get. You do not need any knowledge of excel whatsoever, you just open the file and click the bits of the screen that haven't been locked. Choose a hero and all the drop downs automatically populate for you. I've also added in some prompts for starting HP to make it even easier.

Well, just finished up a game with Ronway using the spreadsheet and it really went well.

Redeemer Fanatic, Wraith, Ra and Haka made light work of Vengeful Baron Blade in a classic beat down that we wrapped up in less than an hour. Even just the hit point tracking made a huge difference, seeing the cards in play was an added bonus. You'll have to ask Ronway how much extra work it was to track everything as he was in the role of moderator; one thing for sure is that it is definitely easy to use.

Hoping to get a few more trial games in, especially multi player, then I will get a final version posted up somewhere. In the meantime just pm me with your email and I will send you a copy if you want to try this out.

Just finished up the game, and it went very nicely. Had Redeemer Fanatic, Wraith, Ra, and Haka against the Mad Bomber Baron Blade in the Realm of Discord. The excel sheet really is a nifty tool to use. I'm looking foward to using it when we have more people involed to see how fast the game will truly be. As it does seem to speed up progress (as long as the person controlling it remembers to update it when people play cards) since you won't have to ask "what's your HP again?" or "what cards are in play?" since it will all be listed on that wonderful sheet.

Edit: And Mezike beat me to it, dang it. That's what I get for checking other stuff before posting.

Hey everyone, I have created a community on Google+ called Sentinels of the Multiverse Online Play (there is also a community for an unofficial fan one, but I didn't want to crowd it with people wanting to play). For those in my circle have already recieved an invitation to this community. Anyone else wanting to join in is free to do so. It has a Start Hangout option in there aswell, so I think that if someone starts a hangout then everyone will be able to see it not have to send out individual invites, but I am not 100% sure on that as it is the first community I have been apart of. Now to ask permission to see if I am able to put any images for the profile picture and things will be set.

So remember to add Sentinels of the Multiverse Online Play (may actually change the name if I can if anyone has a better way of phrasing it) to your Google+ soon! https://plus.google.com/communities/101797616958213033418#communities/117769941955241654989

Sadly the community hangout didn't go exactly as I would of hoped. What I was hoping would happen is if someone is on the community and the click "Start a Hangout" it would also send a notification to everyone in said community that there was a hangout avaliable, but sadly that it was not the case. The hangout also isn't even posted or anything on the Community page, instead it only appears on my page.

Did a little bit more clicking around and seen I can send an invite to everyone inside the community, but I could do that with using the circle. So the mysterious of how this thing works. I wonder if post will send out the notification in communities? And events and such?

Edit: Don't take it wrongly, feel free to still add the community to your google+ accounts. Since if anything it will at least keep easier track of everyone without each person adding people individually.

I had an e-mail informing me of your invite to the community thingy, so I've accepted it. There was a thingy on there somewhere (under "Events", I think), saying that there was an upcoming game, with options as to whether or not I could be there. As it's at about 5am my time,I've had to decline ;).

That was only a test to see if people could find it easily. I've actually posted a new event though saying if anyone is up for a game here in a few minutes, just to kick off the excitement of the communities. Wish I would of posted it sooner, that way the people who have all joined would of actually seen a real game instead of the test event.

OK, so there was some good feedback from last night on how easy everything was to see on screen so I have tweaked to improve this as much as I can. Overall it seems to be working well so I have invested a little more time* in improving the drop downs so that only the available choices are visible (i.e. no blank lines), plus I have enabled a drop down on the Villain and Environment hit point trackers to make it even easier to set starting HP when cards come into play and to reduce the amount of typing required (in fact, there is no typing at all if you don't want to add notes.) These HP dropdowns can still be written over manually if preferred, and they also only go up to the maximum available for any given card.

Voss' card that has HP equal to H will automatically work out the number of active heroes :-) Oh, and I added a button to flip the Villain card and markers for highest/lowest HP Hero. Screenshot below from when I was toying around with it earlier.

If you've already had a copy of the sheet from me then I am afraid that I am going to spam you with this (final) version. I will also post this up on boardgamegeek and put a link here when it has been approved.

Lunchtime stomping of Comsic Omnitron was successful!

And Mezike's spreadsheet was great.

Tips:

1) Spread the work -- different people should control the spreadsheet, villain, and environment

2) Interleave the work -- Don't have the person controlling the villain or environment take the hero turn immediately after or before.

I'm hosting another game in Google+, it starts here in a few minutes. So who is ready to start and play some exciting SotM? If not part of the community yet then click the link in my signature which will take you straight to the still in development community. If I am not mistaken if you join the community now the event should automatically become avaliable to you, if not then let me know and i'll manually invite you to it. Just finished a game with Pwatson using NightMist, Bunker, Greatest Legacy, and Haka against Akash'Bhuta in the Tomb of Anubis. That was a intense battle, for Akash'Bhuta not us because we completely smashed her into a bunch of wimpy christmas cookies. Good battle though, have only went up against Akash'Bhuta a couple times since the release and lost most of those, so it was nice pulling a victory on her in a crazy environment. I was even cheating for the environment for not counting my Savage Mana in play for when Haka destroyed Anubis, allowing Anubis to come back again after it should of been trapped under Haka. And everyone besides Bunker were in their 20s, Bunkier wasn't too far behind being at 19.

I may potentially be able to squeeze a short game in at around 10:30am GMT Friday. Not the best time for most people, but it might suit Nielzabub (GMT +9 so 19:30 Friday night) and some others who have expressed an interest but for whom the timing never quite matches up.

I may well be mooching around the hangouts later on tonight depending on how the rest of the day goes!

I most likely will not make that game at all, considering it will be 4:30 am where i'm at. Though if you look at the wonderfully awesome Community I have created on Google+ you'll see an event stating i'll be up for a game at 8:30 in the morning central time. Which in turn would be 2:30 pm GMT time, which would then be 11:30 pm Nielzabub time! Which is still kind of late considering the game could take an hour or two. Just finished a game with Niel and Paul, we had a bruising yet victorious encounter with Citizen Dawn in Insula Primalis.

One thing we noticed was that I've missed out Visionary's projections from the spreadie - whoops! If anyone finds any more like this please let me know and at some point I'll distribute a sheet with a fix in place. For now you can just put the projections into the notes when playing her.

Niel, Paul, and I had a few games several hours ago. First up was TL Tachyon, Unity, and Fanatic against Voss in Rook City I believe. It was a fun battle, we pretty much crushed him.

Nexy up was a little more trick; Young Legacy, Dark Visionary and Redeemer Fanatic facing off against the Mad Bomber Baron Blade, which also happend to be in Rook City. With a Hasten Doom, to Hasten Doom, to the Devious Disruption combo coming out causing a lot of chaos. Young Legacy was incapacitated shortly after Baron Blade flipped, but with 2 backlash fields in play who would even be able to hit him? His trash pile was beginning to build up as well, so scary! With Young Legacy already knocked out, Visionary in the single digits, and Fanatic in her low teens things were beginning to look bleak. But Fanatic had drawn End of Days, she had to wait until next turn to be able to use it. Luckily Visionary had a Brain Burn that she has been saving for a good moment. After the field was cleared once again, Visionary decides to hide away in her cocoon while she demorilized Baron Blade, Fanatic had been knocked down to 1 health when she plays Wrathful Retribution, hitting Blade for over 30 damage! That next turn it was ended with Fanatic and Visionary at 2 Health.

The next battle... Didn't turn out so good, Eternal Haka, Horus Ra, and EW Absolute Zero against the Plague Rat in the Wagner Mars Base. Absolute Zero and Haka were knocked out fairly early on. With their powers combined they werea ble to help Ra stay alive for awhile, knocking Plague Rat from being in the high 60s down to 18.

That last battle was aided by 4 successive turns when Plague Rat played either Shadowy ambush or Sewer Fiend. As soon as he did damage, Ra collapsed.

Well that was an awesome game last night. Visionary, Tempest, and Absolute Zero against the evil Citizen Dawn on the Wagner Mars Base. The battle started off wonderfully, everyone had cards in hand that they couldn't wait to get into play, but then we did Citizen's Dawn's setup with the dreaded Anvil and Truth combo coming out. After getting rid of those two everything was going smooth, Absolute Zero was set up with his modules, apperatures, and even thermal shockwave. Tempest was nearly complete as well with all his badness ready. Visionary was ready to destroy any ongoing that came into play and I believe another card as well... Then it all changed again with a Devastating Aurora. Clearing the field of anything. At one point Tempest was even as far down as 3 health, he became the healer for awhile.

Closer to the end of the battle it became significantly easier as all her worst cards had already been out, so it was just clearing out the rest of her health. With Lightning Slash appearing two turns in a row, Absolute Zero enjoying hurting himself a little too much, and Visionary keeping the ongoings at bay and dealing a little bit of damage herself.

I'm sure that one day I'll be up for one of these games again, but last time it broke my Internet…I think it might be a combination of being connected to too many people at once and the fact that Google seems to force automatic webcam-image appearance and voice chat (I should probably look to see if there's any way to turn this off). As I'm running via a wireless connection, my signal isn't as strong as it probably could be and has a tendency to drop out every now and then even if I'm only mooching about on a forum page or whatever. I played a text-only Skype game or two and that worked fine though. Probably because there were only a couple of other people and no additional voice/camera info clogging up my connection.

Plus I'm pretty busy atm, discovered a site called Elance where I can write stuff for people and get paid for it, wheeee that partially solves my "looking for a new job" quest. And of course it's now Christmas Eve so tomorrow I'm likely to be fairly busy :D. I'm just busy in general atm, really :P.

Earlier today we had a total of four games. First game was against Plague Rat and the heroes suffered a sad defeat, I believe the line up was RC Wraith, Absolute Zero, and Engine Bunker (can't remember the actual turn order though) in the Tomb of Anubis. Plague Rat seems to always cause a lot of problems on all these online games. I don't think any pairings we've had against him thus far have been a hero victory.

The next exciting game was against GloomWeaver, using Greatest Legacy, Redeem Fanatic, Absolute Zero, and... oh yes NightMist in the Wagner Mars Base. The heroes emerged victorious in this battle, and were pretty much on top of things the entire time. Was nice playing a four player game again aswell.

Next up on the list Wraith, Bunker, and Young Legacy took on Spite in the Realm of Discord. The battle was scarce, aside from Bunker who stood pretty nearly the whole time. Both Young Legacy and Wraith were eventually incapacitated with Bunker at 17 health. We eventually ruled that heroes would win since nothing could happen that would screw up the plan so badly that it would of resulted in a loss, so no point in dragging it out as it would of been awhile before Spite would of actually fallen.

The final game had a returning Absolute Zero (the randomizer loved him that day), Unity, and Tachyon facing Akash'Bhuta in the Tomb of Anubis. This was probably one of the most exciting battles to ever take place. The fact that it was so close that if it would of lasted another round the heroes would of been the losers was so intense. The close battles are always fun to be apart of. Absolute Zero was incapacitated in the final Round on his own turn, Unity was down to 2 and Tachyon was down to 3. It didn't help that all 3 construction pylons were on the bottom 10 cards of the deck, also the Flash Forged were only a few cards higher than that.

Yeah, that Akash Bhuta and Temple of Anubis combo was just comical at times, especially with all the interleaving card effects. It was a long game, the majority of which was taken up with managing those decks. Pretty close at the end too - although I had another lightspeed barrage in hand and there were plenty of options to easily kill off the couple of carapaces that were just about hanging on, we were all very low on health and probably wouldn't have lasted long enough to see another round.

That hero combo we had against Spite in the Realm of Discord was a bit iffy. With RC Wraith and Young Legacy incapacitated their abilities were enough with Bunkers plating to prevent any damage going to him and to feed him enough cards to keep his Gatling Gun in play. We could have sat there forever while Bunker cleaned out his entire deck, but I guess it is a very situational combination.

Another 3 games via G+, another great day for the Sentinels... except for that 1 loss against Dawn.

Our first was against Voss, it was possibly the longest game of Sentinels I've played. Pike Industrial Complex changed all the damage to toxic and we went into a holding pattern, nearly all of Voss' minions were under Savage Mana, the only ones left out were immune to toxic damage and Legacy was immune to the toxic damage that the minions were dealing out. It was just a matter of time before the Omnicannon and Savage Mana built up a large enough charge to take out a 70+ HP Voss!

Then we played against Mad Bomber Baron Blade, he went down far quicker than Voss, the only thing I really remember about it was that Ra took out Blade's first side with a Wrathful Gaze!

Dawn was last up and kicked our arses all over the shop. Absolute Zero could not find a Isothermic Transducer to save his life (literally) and he succumbed to a combination of fire damage from the minions and a Kraken. Unity went down next, also to the Kraken but her bots had done some decent damage to Dawn and her Citizens, enough to get her to flip (with a 3 player game she flipped back very quickly though). Alone, Mr Fixer was holding his own out there with a Pipe Wrench/Driving Mantis Combo that was redirecting all kinds of damage around (including a useful Toxic Seaweed!) but when Devastating Aurora came out... nothing could save him.

So we all now live under Dawn's benevolent rule, all hail Citizen Dawn!

Oh my golly gee, that Voss game felt like it would never end. I thought for sure Legacy was going to get knocked out, as her health had dropped as low as 2 health at one point. All in all it was still a splendid game and totally awesome how that much damage was able to be pulled out all in the last round. It still annoys me that I drew motivational charge at the end of the game.

That Dawn battle was awesome, even though we lost. For the pure fact that Mr. Fixer dealt 30+ damage to Dawn after the other two heroes were incapacitated. Sadly a well timed Devastating Aurora will disrupt any hero.

Speaking of games online! I also just set up another one. Starting at 9 central time, I believe that would be 3 GMT.

Hello,

I am new and I just downloaded the VASSAL thing with the VMOD for SotM.  Can I jump in and watch a game with this as well as play?  I just got the game for Christmas and I would love to watch a bit before I jump in and play.

Thanks

The Vassal thing actually isn't really a requirement. Infact I know out of all the games I have been apart of we have only used it once. Though you can join in and watch or even play, as new guys are always welcome. YOu'll need a google+ account, and also to join the Google+ community which happens to be in my signature. Not sure if you have used the Google+ before, but the event of the game is located in the Event section of the community. If you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Edit: Also I opted to push the time back a little bit since no one was able to make it to this one. So now it will be held two hours from now.

I tend to set up games at any point that I am avaliable, so there will be the occasional weekend game. There isn't an actual set time where people get together right now. Eventually I do hope to have it like that, but with my schedule in the real world doesn't allow for that quite yet.

Brutal evening for the heroes - we got three games in. First one, the Matriarch had a rather tame start in Insula Primalis, playing two Darken the Skies that did absolutely nothing. Everything went downhill from there, fast. The third Darken brought out eleven fowl with everyone at low HP (except for the Matriarch, who was almost full) - we called the game after that.

Second game didn't go much better: Wraith, Zero and Expatriette faced off against the Chairman in Pike Industrial. The less said about it the better, but we did manage to bring the Operative down by 12 HP before everyone faceplanted.

The final game made up for a lot of the pain that came before: Tachyon, Mr. Fixer and Expatriette versus The Ennead in Rook City. The Villains weren't too threatening at first, but Rook City did what Rook City tends to do (and Falling Statuary managed to miss the villains two out of three times) and the pain kept coming fast. In the end, a Toxic Sludge managed to actually work in the heroe's favor, bringing everyone low with only Isis surviving at 2 HP. The final villain card played was The Grave Beckons (destroy non-villain targets with <= 3HP), which killed of Tachyon and Expatriette, but allowed Fixer to finish off Isis for the win.

Once more a very enjoyable experience, thanks to Matchstickman, Ronway and Mezike!

Well just finished the two great games. First up was against the powerful Plague Rat, using RC Wraith, F6 Tempest, and Ra in Insula Primalis. Finally a online game where we actually beat him. Tempest spent the game healing and keeping the infections under wraps, while Wraith and Ra beat Plague Rat to death.

Next up Evan dropped out of the battle, but Garou and I took the control of two heroes each. Wraith, Unity, Bunker, and Argent Adept facing GloomWeaver in Megalopolis. He didn't really stand a chance. Most of his minions weren't out for more than one round, and those who survived that turn were dispatched with on the next round. As Garou pointed out though it was a good thing we didn't play on advance mode as the only real problem with that would of been the time it would take Unity get more golems out and Argent Adept to get set in full offensive mode.

Yeah, our humiliating defeat against Spite was definitely all the new guys fault. Yep, absolutely nothing at all to do with Eternal Haka failing to perform a few rounds of Ground Pound despite having over half his deck in my hand including every copy of Ground Pound. Which might just have helped us last long enough to put enough damage in for the big Haka of Battle finishing move. No siree. Nothing to see here, move along. Moooove along.

There's a game sarted right now!

edit: Well, Apostate looked like he was about to kick us into another dimension with eight relics coming out in the first two turns. Eternal Haka, Young Legacy, Fixer, and Tachyon were on the ropes with barely a scratch on the villain, when Haka's card drawing frenzy saved the day by bringing a rampage into hand. A few well timed Grease Guns, Ground Pounds, and Hypersonic Assaults kept the bogeyman at bay long enough for us to recharge through healing and to start whittling away at Apostates HP. We were in the Realm of Discord, which hadn't been altogether kind to us, when Time Flies came out and was immediately our best friend. A heavy take down with a 13 pt Haka of Battle + Taiaha combo was enough for Legacy to finish the job. Great game, and a totally unexpected turnaround from a dire situation!

http://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/85440/mezikes-sotm-online-gaming-aid is where the spreadsheet is located.

When you're running the google hangouts on the left side there is a list of icons. One of which looks like a computer monitor with and arrow on it. Clicking that will bring up another window in which will show every window you currently have open also fullscreen, all you have to do is click the one with the spreadsheet and it's ready to go!

Also if you haven't already you could send her to the Google+ Community so she can join some of the nice folks there to play games with whenever she is avaliable. It's one of the reason why I play on there so much as I would otherwise play more games alone.

A little update, my friend and I DID get a game in, though I think my version of excel is too old to run the spreadsheet properly. So after 30 minutes of crashing (on both sides, we're poor students and our laptops suffer for it) we adjusted our technique to a combo of Skype, the iphone app, and me treating the game like I was a color commentator on ESPN the Ocho. ("Oooooh, and after that mighty blow from Geb, the current hp totals for our heroes are Tachyon 20, Wraith, 17, Chrono-Ranger, 16, The Scholar, 17. Tachyon is sure loving that otherworldly resilience, don't you think Chuck?" Chuck being my imaginary co-host.)

Point is, the google+ hangout and excel spreadsheet combo works great for me... when someone else is running the excel spreadsheet. But, upshot is we did get to play.

Yeah, we'll still have plenty of games on the Google+ Hangouts. I don't think i'll be having a game today, but tomorrow i'll probably get a couple in.

That's how we played before Mezike had created the spreadsheet, with two people it isn't so bad, but when there become lots of people it becomes a little more complicated and lots of questions get asked. I believe we did type a bit to keep track of health and each person kept track of their own. At least you guys have figured out a way to play though so that's good.

How about two more games for Saturday as well? So on April 6 there will be a game at 2:00 pm CDT and another at 7:00 pm CDT.

S'okay. Guilted the BF into a game IRL. A resounding and somewhat soul-scarring loss to Apostate

Hey you can't go against Apostate anyhow. I just had him removed from the game the other day. Along with his sword, a pugilist, and one of his gauntlets.

Oh thank God. Apostate is actually out to get me. I accidentially insinuated that he was easy once, and ever since then it's been one Profane Summons after another. I'm not saying I'm going to end up like pwatson and get a sword through the chest, but you know, if I disappear, send Fanatic. But if he's been removed, I might be safe

RO

Apostate has a fairly swingy difficulty. It mostly depends on the number of heroes you have and if he draws Profane Summons. With less heroes the damage is so minimal that heroes with damage reduction barely bat an eye to him. Plus Profane Summons only brings out two relics, which isn't so hard to handle at all. But once you get to five players he deals so much damage and thus profane summons just cause so much trouble.

You'll only be safe for a little while, villians always come back. And it's always when you least expect it.

They do have a certain cockroach-like tendency to survive. Or maybe like mold: you think you got it all and as soon as you turn your back, there's a fresh patch

I like deck management for Apostate. Wraith (bonus points if you utility belt- stunbolt him) or Dark visionary. He definitely has cards that are good and cards that are not great. I had this one amazing chain of a few into the stratospheres and then the temporal grenade on an Apocalypse card that essentially neutered his deck. That was the last time I beat him.

Okay, I'll ask again this time with a lot more lead time. Is anyone (especially someone with excel) going to be available for a 2:30 CDT game?

Apostate is apparently off the table. He's out of the game as per Ronway

If you want you could go ahead and set-up an event, if not I will get around to it eventually. I was thinking of putting game up around that time, but I was waiting until about 1 pm to do so as I will know for sure there. Right now i'm about 70% sure I will be able to make a game this afternoon.

I will do that then. I don't normally want to set up an event if I can't guarantee the proper running

Of course, we've got a line of severe thunderstorms bearing down on us in dramatic fashion here, so I'm just hoping that tornadoes don't interrupt things myself.

At the moment we seem to be playing when someone feels like setting up a game, without giving much more than a few hours notice in a lot of cases.

So there's been talk amongst us G+ regulars of scheduling recurring sessions, so everyone knows there will always be a game going at certain times. The question is, what times are best?

Generally we seem to gravitate towards 1 or 2am GMT/BST (or whatever that is in your local time), and occasionally 7 or 8pm (which is of course better for those Europeans who actually sleep at sensible hours.)

Anyone interested in these times? Anyone prefer some other time? It's be awesome to get lovely new people to dilute the Ronway down a bit. ;)

Discovered another oddity in it, GI Bunker and Greatest Legacy cannot be selected via the dropdown for heroes. Though they still appear when randomizing.

Edit: And now that I was getting ready to start a 3 player game, thus only randomizing 3 heroes, it was discovered it cannot randomize anything less than 5.

as a Regular of the G+ games: evryone is welcome to join, you are free to make your own events and discus stuf. had the best games online with people that know the game. shananigens and all. or just make good use of a card/rule.

excample: baronblade has 2 backlashfields, and his dmg is boosted by 1. rederect the damge he does back to himself, and he will start killing himself rather fast.

altough it seems some of us have moved to the digital game... still prefer the normal online thing tough.

I'd like to join in a Skype or G+ (or similar) game at some point, but last time I checked they were mostly being held in the evening (when I'm busy) or at about 1am my time, so I haven't been able to get along to any. I'm usually willing to join. Provided I have the time for it. I'm on the G+ page, but if we're also sharing skypes, my skype is VisforYoshi (probably not too surprising there). When you send the request, you may want to mention that you're from the sentinels forums. I won't accept any requests if I don't recognize the username and I don't know where the request came from.

Not sure if this is exactly what you want, but for anyone who may not be aware, there's also a Discord chat for people who are looking for either online Steam/iPad games or physical games - with the latter, there is a Google spreadsheet some people set up that keeps track of permanents in play while we all play our physical cards and talk via the Discord chat.  The traffic there varies from lively to less so but there's often a few people who're up for games. I've tried it with some people here and it works great.  Here's the link to the Discord channel (entitled Realm of Discord)

Ah yes, I did join that aaaages ago but haven't really used it. I did actually find another way of playing Sentinels online (but not through the Steam version) which is really quite close to actually playing the physical game. But I only use that version because the person I'm playing with lives about twenty or so miles away so we can't easily meet up physically and use my cards. Otherwise I'd just do that ;).
