Sentinels of the Multiverse Challenge

    Arenson9 and I want to help motivate and mobilize this community to share Sentinels of the Multiverse with new players. To that end we've planned a series of challenges for the community as a whole, recognition for those people who teach the most new players, and an unfolding fan-written story that will be unlocked as each achievement is reached.

    The story is written by one of our youngest Sentinels of the Multiverse fans. The first chapter is below, along with a little information about her.

    For our first challenge, can we as a community teach twenty five new players? To help us meet the challenge, add to the count by posting to this thread with: New player count, who taught the game (forum user name), location (city, state/province,country) and date.

    If we meet this challenge, we will not only unlock the second chapter, but possibly also illustrations of that chapter as well.

    We are in need of multiple illustrators willing to lend their talent to bringing these words to life. If you have interest, send a private message to kirioni and arenson9, preferably with a link to your online art portfolio.

    Without further adieu here is the first chapter:

Chapter 1: Danger Calls

        It was supposed to be a perfect day to relax for heroes:  Legacy, the leader;  Ra, God of the Sun; Wraith, secret protector; and Tachyon, fastest woman on Earth.  Legacy was planning to go on a vacation at the beach.  Ra was just about to check the pyramids.  Wraith was going to take a day off from running her business, and Tachyon was going to win a marathon.  That is what they would have been doing if Legacy hadn’t noticed something.

        Just as Legacy was packing his towel, he sensed danger in the city nearby.  It always starts with a cold shiver up his spine; then he knows there is danger and where it is.  He immediately called Ra, Wraith, and Tachyon.  Of course Tachyon was the first one to the city with her fast speed.  The rest of the heroes got there just as Baron Blade and his mobile defense platform were speeding away.

        When Blade was out of sight the heroes looked around and saw at least twenty people wrapped up in toxic seaweed!  Ra reacted first, burning the toxic seaweed off of eight people, but the other twelve had seaweed too strong.  Wraith had brought her smoke bombs and razor blades to help.  She sliced through five citizens’ toxic seaweed but the rest was too thick.  Legacy and Tachyon finished off the other seven with their strength and speed: Legacy used his strength to pry the seaweed off the victims, and Tachyon taunted the seaweed to chase her so she could lure the seaweed into large aquarium tanks to contain it, then use her scientific knowledge to render it harmless.

        Now that all the citizens were free, the heroes had to look for any more damage Baron Blade had caused.  When they found nothing else (surely because Legacy had sensed the danger so quickly and Tachyon had zipped to the scene before Blade could wreak more havoc), the mighty heroes went off to fight Baron Blade.

About the Author: Kiva Turner is a 4th grader who enjoys writing, reading, doing craft projects, putting on plays, and performing science experiments. She has two older brothers and a baby brother on the way, so will soon be the only daughter in a family surrounded by “three stinkin’ brothers.” Her favorite Sentinels character is The Wraith because she is very adventurous and fun to play as.

I just want it to be noted that I actively want to participate in this, but I’ve run out of people to teach this game to! I’m constantly on the prowl for new players, but my core group of seven or eight and I have taught everyone who is interested in games, heroes, or comics that we know. I’m sure I’ll find some fresh meat come the beginning of the school year.

This is a great idea! I look forward to what our young writer will be bringing us next!

Two more people taught!

Brian, who, like Christopher, I know from JoCoCruiseCrazy, is currently couchsurfing his way around Canada. He and I taught Sentinels to his hosts in Ottawa tonight, with me joining in via Skype. It totally worked super awesomely!

Anyone who wants me to join in to your game via Skype, just give me a shout.

We crushed Baron Blade on Mars and then won a squeaker against Voss in Insula Primalis.

My wife and I taught my good friend Dan and his buddy Mike last night.
We took on Baron Blade in Ruins of Atlantis for an easy victory with Legacy, The Wraith, Ra and Haka. We stayed the night at Dan’s so we’ll probably be playing some more today!

18 is what I count as well. Sadly Rabit the official ruling is only complete games count. Though I would love to hear your demo count just to get a sense of the traffic you all see during Gen Con!

Heh, yeah, I definitely wouldn't want us to count con demos. We... play those very differently. ;-)

One more taught in San Diego. (As an aside, that makes eight of my eleven nieces and nephews taught.)

Can't take credit for it myself, but one of my nephews taught three of our cousins. A quote from one of them, "I don't usually like cooperative games, but that was really cool."

Wow. I have no idea how many new people I taught and played complete games with over GenCon. Gonna be conservative and say 25.

Craig -- how many of those 25 were not at the booth? I think maybe booth games -- as awesome as they are -- shouldn't count for this particular challenge.

I taught a new player this past Sat. My friend Peter visited from FL and we took down Plague Rat in Insula Primalis with The Wraith, Bunker, Legacy, and Tempest. Great game and a good time.

We did it! Met the first challenge!

Hello guys, first time poster...6 day fan.  I first played Sentinals of the Multiverse at this past Gencon and have become addicted since then.  My friends and I spent most of Saturday and all of Sunday demoing the game trying to gather enough points for the game maps.  We ended with 1400 points.  Kinda close lol.

I'm posting this, however, to add to the count.  After we got back to Grand Rapids, MI, I taught my brother's girlfriend and both my mom and dad.  Hoping to add two more on Sunday.

Played with two more new people (Chilla and Paul A), and a couple of regulars (Omnitron in Megalopolis vs Bunker, Unity, Wraith (Paul A), Argent Adept and Ra (Chilla)). One of the new people (Paul A) was the person who posted the afore mentioned comment. Playing was penance for the comment.  He enjoyed it, which is a plus, too.

Also mentioned Christopher's comment, which got a laugh.

Alright, three more new players from this guy, here in Indy. One of them especially seemed to really grasp it quickly, and I'm hoping to turn him into a regular.

I taught another cousin of mine, halfway through the first round he seemed to understand everything.  He also mentioned this game being a really solid game.  While I taught him here in Indianapolis, he currently lives in Columbus OH, will be soon going to Marine boot camp, and then likely will be moving to Texas afterwards.

I taught two people over the weekend who'd actually been given the game as a gift last Christmas but never opened it to play.  They loved it and couldn't believe they could have been playing it all this time.

I've got a decent amount of people here at WKU playing, and a friend who has already ordered her own copy from our local gaming store. If the rules of this little task is asking how many people we've taught AFTER the post was made, then count me at four people, I believe. But if we're counting people I've taught altogether, that's a different story.

I think we're just going to count new people taught moving forward.

I've gotten at two at my local gamestore one has seen us play and even drew me a custom Unity playmat, the other is always playing games there.  THey both loved it.

Zombieland, Scarecrow, Loki, Panda, Zombie Fried Guy...a lot more than just two haha

Great Job all! By my count (which I hope someone checks) we are sitting at 49 people taught Sentinels of the Multiverse! This is phenominal!

Three more new people taught today.

One of the games was quite interesting in that Dawn flipped to her invulnerable side and them immediately flipped back to her start side. That's how bad we were losing -- there were five villains in the trash and at least three (five, I think) in play.

My apologies again for the delay in getting the second chapter out. Our author (remember, age 9) is not currently able to provide more, so we are considering other possibilities.

2 more people yesterdaty (John and Michael). Unfortunately, as we were playtesting my villain contest entry and got a really, really bad draw, we were slaughtered and I think one at least didn't have fun.

One new person since I've last been here, I think. I'm running out of people to teach!

Ah, Columbus. As the home of Origins and CABS, I'd guess Columbus has a robust tabletop gaming scene. How many game stores are there?

We have at least 5 that i know of, Guardtower, Ravenstone, The Soldiery, The Laughing Ogre (iirc), and one more that opened recently near where I used to live not quite sure of it's name, haven't had the time to visit. That's not counting the couple of comic shops i know that also run magic / l5r tourneys too.

Wonderful Job all! We are currently at 68 people taught since Aug 3rd!!! We've had some changes in plan and are putting on hold the continuation of Kiva's storyline and starting another series. The next challenge is a grand total of 100 people taught, that is 32 more! I believe you all will blast through that goal in no time! Character 1: Citizen of the M

             I don’t believe in all this end of the world junk, but a lot of my friends, smart guys some of them, do. I mean, I don’t think they are crazy or anything. Life here… well that is crazy and it has only gotten more so in the past few years. I work construction; retrofit, string new lines, patch up buildings, build new buildings. A lot of grunt work, but it’s good honest work. This city here…? It needs a lot of good hard work with all the whackos running around. Just the other day, drivin’ into the M (Megalopolis is what the outta town folks call it) and hit traffic. Find out it’s not some big movie star or a run of the mill flat tire without the sense to pull over… instead it is a circus of loons running around throwing all sorts of crazy stuff at each other. This one chick came by my car with enough guns you think she was trying to take over a small country and the police are just standing by. Call that taxes wasted. And get this, get this, you will never believe what the paper writes… calls ‘em heroes, talks about some space man trying to enslave the world. I have seen a lot in my days; Wars, riots, stock markets crashing, the lot… but space men is… just, pardon the phrase, outta this world. What am I to believe next weird rips in space time and dinosaurs? I call shenanigans of the third degree. You’d think the tabloids would run better stuff. But I try to pay them no mind, as long as a clock in and fix whatever building they’ve knocked over in their vigilante turkey shoot and clock out at the end of the day it don’t matter none to me. I guess that what us normal folk do to make a living in the M.

John first fell in love with games with Hungry Hungry Hippos along with scavenger hunts he and his three siblings would make for one another(usually leading to ice cream or popcorn).Speaking of; His favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate mouse tracks and his (current) favorite Sentinel is Unity.

I have an affection for Netherlands, but have not been outside of Amsterdam.

Added 2 at a "game-a-thon" yesterday before I had to leave for a family gathering. For one I think it was a little too complex, but the other loved it. The rest of the folks were either part of our regular group or folks who owned the original set but hadn't played a lot.

Don't know if Arenson9 was able to add any after I left, though - really hoping so!

If you would have stayed in Europe for one more week, you could have gone to the Dutch version of Spiel, called 'Spellenspektakel'. It's held in Eindhoven. Not as huge as Essen, but still a few thousand visitors. Sentinels was sold there too, by one of the retailers. Snagged the last copy off the shelves there No time/place to introduce some more people to Sentinels, unfortunately. Will try at the next Ducosim fair in Amersfoort, Netherlands, however, and of course at our local gaming club.

We played some more, but I don't think there were any new players. I think I played eight games yesterday and five of them were Sentinels.

Two fairly easy wins against the Ennead. One trouncing by The Organization. One silly win against Voss using Chastise/Stealth Bot. And, finally, a comfortable win against Akash'Bhuta. Not much drama in any of those games, but fun nonetheless.

Woohoo! Just taught my brother over Skype. (Sent him everything for his birthday a couple months ago, but he hasn't been able to play, yet.)

I Megalodon360 taught 7 players the game in Clearwater Fl, Dennis,Kerry, Jason,Josh,Holly,Glenn and Adam. We actually tried a 7 player game to see how things scaled with the H Mechanic and it worked well.They defeated the Chairmen but every hero was in single digits with Adam at 1 hp.It was a fun time and everyone loved it!!!!!!

We are planning a event at the local game store where we will be teaching another dozen or so people .Can't wait.

Two more taught today!

Between my buddies and I, we have easily taught about six people how to play this game (possibly more, but I don't want to cheat).  Liesl, Emma, Ashley, John, Kristen, and Cameron all loved the game!

Character 2 Dr. Paki Onuris : Fated Beginnings

             I am but a grain of sand in the ever shifting desert. The more I witness the less I understand. This story began, as many days do, with the Sun climbing into the sky and the land awaking the fires within the countless waves of sand moving so slowly that their power is underestimated. Outsiders are not uncommon to our lands, and many come seeking treasure and meeting their end among the storms and silent deaths that are veiled in time lost. The leader of this group was not, however, common. This man had the zeal of ten and the thirst of knowledge many a fool knows not to crave. Upon our first meeting he offered words of honor upon me and my family, and I could do no other than to invite him to our meal as I would dishonor my family to be inhospitable when honored in this way. He did not take long, once the meal’s observances were finished, to get to what he sought. The manner of his questioning was rare even among my people, he questioned with piercing clarity as if he knew the answers and was testing my knowledge of the sands and the secrets they held in firm grasp. I sensed and opportunity and so struck with him a pact. I would serve as guide in exchange for education for myself and my sons. It seemed as though I had spoken not from my mind but his, as he held out his hand in bond. And so it was our first meeting and the beginning of such mysteries that will only reveal in time, for this man I would see become god, and in so witnessing would live into my given name. For I am called Paki or “Witness”, son of Onuris “Brings Back the Distant One”, and my story and his are now forever intertwined as sand slips over sand.

Taught a new person yesterday. 

We palyed two games yesterday with mutual friends (4 total).

(completely randomized!) We rolled a dice tod etermine which hero, environment, villain to take.

Our first game we were

Legacy, Unity, Absolute Zero, Tachyon vs  Space Omnitron, and we were in Tomb of Anubis.

We all lived. Legacy was at one HP, and we killed him. It was tough.

Our second game we were: Tempest, Nightmist, Ra, and Argent Adept on Mars against The Apostate.

Once we got rid of his 4 relics that came out right away, we had an easy time.

I now ahve a few regulars!

I kept meaning to post in this thread and forgetting, so here goes.  So far I've taught:

Me (self-taught, no one demo-ed it for me), Brooks, Nicole, Alex, Brent, Unmil, Mike, Manny, G, Adam, Scott, and my mom.

I'll try to see if I can remember any more, but that's what I've got off the top of my head, so.....12 so far I guess.

Two more at the games club, Julia and Lucy.

I have to say... I registered here just to reply on this thread (although, I may stick around for a bit :)).

I'm a recent convert, and I've been infected everyone I can. So far, I've taught myself as well as: Louise, Raymond, Bob, Aaron, Adam, Jim, Eric and Juliann. I've also been pulling it out fairly regularly at a local gaming event, so a LOT of people have been seeing it on the table and asking about it.

So far, so good!

Responding to a comment that I should detail the steps I am taking to cluster wayward, middle-class youth around this game.

I am the father of two children (one teen and one twenty-something). Starting a few months ago, at one of their parties, i noticed there was entirely too little activity (mainly sitting, talking and commenting on the unfairness of the world).

And so arrived: GEEKDAD! 

To my children's horror, I pulled out my cleanly organized SotM game, sat a few down (whom I knew to be geek-worthy) and pitted Legacy, Bunker and Tempest against Baron Blade. Mind, in these games I play the villain. I realize no one is required for this, but it a) allows me to take more of a referee role and b) assign a patronizing voice to the antagonist.

Before I knew it, 2/3 of the party was either playing or watching, commenting on whether the moon would mash into the earth or if the heroes would save the day.

Now, when the call goes out (every 2 weeks), my kids' friends bravely stand forth to answer. With cries of, "No, not the Mars Base!" and "How many birds can she summon at the same time?!?", we carve out a titanic battle or two and consume frozen pizza.

They bring their friends, at least 1-2 new kids every meeting. Those that don't show up as often do so because they have gotten their own sets and seek to outmatch my villainous cruelty. 

Like a growing plague of zombies, the game's influence slowly consumes the youth of south central Minnesota. More and more of them trying to order copies of their new addiction from the local games store.

But I...I have a credit card and a Google wallet account (muahahahahhahahahhaha).

Would you like to count up how many people you've taught? If I've counted correctly, we're up to 156 on the challenge, with the next goal being 175.

Taught 4 new people over new years, afterwords my friend's wife told him he must buy SotM. Victory for us!

Well I don't know if you want to hear from a recipient rather than a teacher, but....

one person (who has not yet posted but i know reads these forums) taught me the game on Christmas (I was instantly hooked). I have since ordered the game and it just arrived this morning.  I am looking forward to infecting...err...teaching some of friends. :)

Infecting? Omg...I've just worked it out - Greater Than Games are Plague Rat! Or something...and we're all being infected and spreading it to other people! But it's a fun infection...so let's spread the fun to the rest of the world, and soon no-one will be doing anything except sitting on their arses playing cards, muahahahahahahaa :D.

+1 in Toledo, 4 of us taught one person :) We had a great time hacking away limbs while avoiding lava flows and giant beasts. I think that puts us at 163!

Mezike and I taught 2 more people at London on Board tonight. We got brutally curb-stomped by Iron Legacy but theyenjoyed themselves.

I taught 3 people  (2 of which enjoyed heavily) last Saturday at Randolph's in Montreal. A board game bar pub!

Busy, two floors, good food and always happening. It's higher than it is wide, but I don't seem to have a problem with it.

Character 3: Olivia Carter Dickson: Employee of the Month

People call me a neat freak, well some just call me a freak. I prefer to be called Livy, though most call be OCD.

When I read the announcement of a new research facility being built, I knew this was my chance to finally work somewhere that made a difference. I had been in pharmaceuticals for years, it paid the bills, but there was little for me in the way of cutting edge research. I read the thorough application and filled it out with a glee that only true dorks have. I love forms, I like the look of a crisp sheet almost as much as one full of data, and that data was me. I got an interview and again had to fill out a lengthy non-disclosure agreement, which had some odd fine print. It had things such as a comprehensive list of “improbable unfortunate events” that they were not legally liable for. This was not even a form for employment, just the standard “tour the facility” paperwork. I guess, looking back these should have all been red flags, but I was young..(er) then and just excited to embrace a new facet of life.

I ended up taking the job and with all my education, all my years of experience... the position was hybrid between a rodent wrangler, glorified janitor and hazmat team. In the beginning most days were uneventful; my team would make the rounds; snag, bag and tag any stray rats. We’d check that gages on numerous vats were functioning properly. We were responsible for any chemical spills or hazardous materials disposal. Work was like clockwork until there was a major change in “management”. I clearly recall the day when the notice was handed down, most people were worried about their jobs, I had an arrogant feeling they would be hard pressed to replace me or my team, boy was I ever wrong.

After the initial personnel reshuffle I WAS the night team, shifts went from slow paced to non-stop. I was not the only area that can been “restructured” and we all had the sense we were working in a ticking time bomb. Too many gages, whole floors no one knew who or what was working on as well as odd cryptic overtones in memos that were hard to decipher their meaning, as if they were posted not to staff, but to someone, or something else entirely.

One day, purely by happenstance I ventured off an elevator which had shorted between floors. I discovered that there was, in fact a floor between floors. Overhead lighting was dim and flickered. The elevator issue seemed like a breaker malfunction that was effecting the entire level. A bioluminescence filled the space as the lights died and there were vats lining the walls which to my horror contained humanoid shaped creatures! I ran back to the elevator as the generator spun back up, the doors closed behind me as the white lights bust on. I continued to my floor still catching my breath. My head spun, and I knew I should report this, but who could I trust? Someone had to be reading those memos, someone checking on whatever “experiment” between the floors. After a sleepless night I received a visit, at home, by a stern looking man who said I had been awarded the employee of the month, along with a bonus and raise which he had brought, in cash.The hollowness in his voice matched the scalpel sharpness of his stare; I knew that this gesture was both one of intimidation, a call to silence. I also got the next day off of work, which I took as a “think it over” day. The news that day showed me, and the world, that the place I worked was far more than or anyone had known.

I've infected 12 people at my RPG club in Chesterfield, UK. One of them, Chris, liked it so much that he borrowed it and in turn infected at least another two people, and then proceeded to buy the game plus expansions. I believe his friend bought the base game as well.

We have a few members who haven't tried it yet but I should be able to persuade them to give it a go fairly soon. And I've got my eye on a friend who isn't a gamer but is a big comic book fan - the theme's right up her street so we'll see what happens.

Also in June I'll be at our yearly mini-con, basically a bunch of us hire some cottages for a week and play boardgames and RPGs pretty much constantly, and I know that most of the attendees won't have played SotM. More new potential victims!

Not too familiar with UK geography. Looked up Chesterfield on Google Maps. Is that in Lancashire?!

Huh, having found the Wikipedia entry for Lancashire, it's clear that Chesterfield is NOT in Lancashire. Sorry, a lot of my 'knowledge' about the UK comes from having played Kingmaker a bunch as a kid.

Hehe, I'm in England and I don't really know where Chesterfield is, either ;). I live down in the southeast, in Kent. My knowledge of most other countries is pretty rubbish as well - I know the >G HQ is in St. Louis, but do I have the faintest idea where that is? Heh, nope! Well, I gather it's near Indianapolis. Which I'm guessing is in the state of Indiana. Naturally I have no idea where that is either. About the only places I can identify on a map of the US are Florida (because of the shape) and Alaska 'cause it's at the top (but if state/country borders weren't shown I'd probably wrongly point at Canada or something). And I recall taht new York is on the east coast somewhere, 'cause that's where the Titanic was going. And San Fransisco is in California (I think?) which is on the west coast 'cause that's where the San Andreas Fault is so it's basically buggered if that fault ever gives way. Apart from that I know a bunch of place names (cities and states) but no real clue where they are. Well, Utah is down the bottom somewhere, I think, 'cause it's all desert. But so's Nevada and Arizona and I don't know where they are at all!

So if someone tells me a US place name and I say "Where's that?" it's no good telling me "It's near such-and-such a place" because that's no good to me either ;).

I find it interesting that people say St. Louis is close to Indianapolis. It is rather close when it comes to postage and shipping, but it’s still rather far at about a 6 hour drive down I-70 either way.

But a six-hour drive isn't very far in terms of USA distance though, is it? It's just a massive wide load of empty space with a bunch of cities dotted about and an absolutely huge supervolcano beneath one area ;). I only suggested that maybe those two places are close together because several thread titles seem to imply that GTG visit Indianapolis often so therefore it must be fairly close to their base. Or something ;).

It's a day trip.

It's in Derbyshire, right in the middle of the country. Closest city is Sheffield, but Derby's not far away. That probably doesn't help much for most of you… We're famous mostly for having a church with an impressively crooked steeple, and for being the home of George Stephenson. Not very exciting, I know!

Six hour drive? It's 242 miles. Even Google Maps thinks it is less than 4. With Rabit or Christopher driving, it may be closer to 3.

I lived in Hong Kong while I was finishing high school. I found it amusing to describe the (rather small) US state where I'd grown up as being between two cities. I'd use Philadelphia and Baltimore for people who were more than average in the know, but it more likely to be New York and Washington, DC. There was one person for whom the only city they could name in the US was Chicago, which I always found a bit odd. I mean, Chicago IS the third largest city in the country, but there are plenty of more well known cities (I think) that are smaller (DC, New Orleans, Boston, San Francisco, Miami, Dallas, for instance) not to mention the two larger cities, New York and Los Angeles.

Only 3.5 hours? I must be remembering something else.  I still wouldn't consider it close, as I even consider something like Evansville pretty far.  But I guess gaging relative distance is a subjective matter.

I go down I94 to Detroit when I have to. Takes a little over an hour and I refuse to consider it "close".
