Sotm Event #18: App Team Battle!

Overview

This is a team based event, where you try to score the most points. During each round, you will have to make 3 teams to go after the three villains. Each villain you defeat will score you a point. Whichever team has the most points at the end of three rounds wins.

Teams

Each team will consist of 3 players, and each player must face a different villain in each round. Each player will only play 1 match a round. Please submit your teams here. TEAM SUBMISSIONS ARE NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED.

Villains

I will randomize the villain and environment matches for each round. All villains must be played on advance. Villain variants will be added to the randomization. If a variant is rolled, you must play the variant version.

Hero Teams

In order to face the villains, you will form 3 hero teams from the eleven available in the app for each round. At the start of the new round, you can rearrange your teams. You can select your teams after seeing the villain/environment matches, and you can select which team will fight which villain.

Each hero can only be selected once per round, and all heroes must be used. You can either spread out the heroes in 3-4-4 or 3-3-5. This is your choice, and it can be changed from round to round. You can select the order of the heroes for each game in each round.

Promo Heroes

At the beginning of each round, I will randomize which variant of a hero is available. You can only use the variant that is rolled. You can know which variant is available before selecting your teams.

Timeline

You will have until Sunday 2-22 at 7:00 PM CST to submit your teams.

For each round, you will have 48 hours to create your teams and play your games. Any games not done by then will be considered a loss, and all heroes incapped.

Results

All results should be submitted here. You will need to submit your team, the player on the team, the heroes used, number of incaps, and a link to a screenshot of your results (if you can). Any loss, not just being incapped, is considered a loss, and all heroes are considered incapped. Please do not post your results to the forum, so other teams can’t see your hero selection before playing.

Your team scores 1 point for each victory you had. You do not lose anything for being defeated.

At the beginning of a new round, I will post the results of the last round. At that point, you may post any session reports of the previous round.

Rounds, Winner, and Tiebreaker

The game will last for 5 rounds. The team with the most points is the winner.

In the case of a tie, whichever team had the least amount of incaps will be the winner.

Prize

All members of the winning team will be given access to the Mega Computer. The Mega Computer is a text based SotM game where Handelabra tests out all of the rules. This will allow you to help make sure the game works correctly, and play the decks early. Currently, the Mega Computer is testing decks from the Rook City expansion.

I've liked the event, even if some of the matches were terrible. In my match against Dawn she started off with Blood, Sweat and Tears and played a Blinding Blast.

By the end of the first turn, eveyone had taken seven damage and had no cards in their hand.

I will speak only for myself in having run a couple test matches of about 2 rounds each to figure out what order I wanted the heroes in, and got lucky on the actual match. And I think we only aced rounds 3 and 4; there was an incap someplace in round 2. (And I completely wiped in round 1, against Voss with a first or second round pull of whichever ship does end-of-turn fire damage.)

You can do test matches? I thought something like that might be against the rules. Because if you had a really bad game, you could just throw your hands up, say test match and keep playing till you got a better game.

Edit: I'm just making a general statement. I trust the other members of the forum, and am not trying to make an accusation of any kind.

If you're keeping yourself to a specific rule consistently, than that should be fine. It's just that if I'd known you were doing that, I probably would've done it too. I just have to ask, do you record the outcome of the second game even if your test game had better results?

JF
jffdougan

#59

Yes. (For the record, the most recent round was the only one in which I did it, and it was only because I was trying to puzzle out which order I wanted the heroes in. I was the last one in the team to go, and although we'd talked about which heroes to put against which villain, I wasn't sure which of a couple orderings was going to be most effective.)

I don't have any problems with it then. Probably something we should've talked about before the rounds started. I'm just going to have to use my dark magic to pray for your misfortune in the following...crap, I'm writing that out loud. I mean, let's have a good game.

Fellow SIEVEr here. I was playing against the bosses with different combos of heroes as we were messaging back and forth to decide what teams we would go for. Once we made the final decision on teams, I did the "final battle," but I had often played that team against that boss in my preliminary trials. If Pydro thinks that's not kosher, then we'll step aside.

As a side note, I went up against Cosmitron last time convinced it was going to be a wipe. Only a fluke draw of Ground Pound and double Hypersonic Assaults made that battle remotely possible. Then Unity's bots ate his robot face.

Last member of SIEVE reporting in here. I personally haven't played test games specifically for this event (though I have certainly taken note if a relevant team came up in my own games when using random+advanced) and I've recorded my first play after team composition was decided each round. We've talked extensively about what heroes should go to which battles, however, and I've played out most the potential interactions out in my head thoroughly before making that decision, every time.

There's been some pretty spectacular luck in a couple of games, true, but I feel like we've put a lot into the planning phase that's helped make that possible. I'll gladly to post some of those discussions to show what I mean after we've wrapped up the final round.

That being said, I absolutely stand by the will of the group if anyone feels that, as a team, we've stolen an unfair advantage by having some of the matchups "pre-played" before finalizing the teams. I don't have an emotional attachment here, I've really just thouroughly enjoyed the whole thing as a puzzle-solving exercise.

SI
Silverleaf

I also would have done some preliminary testing if I'd known other people were doing it.

In at least one of my games it became clear quite quickly that my team wasn't really working that well for that villain (I'd left the choices up to my teammates and taken what was left, since I'm used to playing random anyway). We could totally have swapped heroes out after a couple of test rounds, but of course we didn't.

I'm torn now, to be honest. I don't want to be a dick and say I think you guys had an unfair advantage and be all sore loser since you obviously haven't cheated, but it does feel like we've been playing two different challenges.

I dunno. :/

After the kerfuffle, I decided to play the last round cold. I'll spoil only that it was the Cosmitron game, and I drew a first round EPE. I won by the skin of my teeth.

I did try to figure out how to broadcast the game, but couldn't. :(

Edit to add: Not that it would have been an interesting broadcast; the camera/microphone we got for the Windows tower that died last fall doesn't play nicely with the Mac Mini that replaced it.

I have discussed this matter with MigrantP and the Mods, and everyone agrees that it is my fault (which is why I will never ask for their opinion again  :slightly_smiling_face: ).

I didn't anticipate this idea, and it should have been spelled out in the rules from the beginning. Either saying you could practice or you couldn't, just so everyone is on the same page.

That being said, after the fact, in our case, since it wasn't specifically spelled out that you couldn't, and since we are on the honor system I believe it when it was said that no cheating happened, I do not want to disqualify anyone.

I understand the frustration, and I apologize. I will try to make things clearer next time.

I'm not blaming you Pydro because it's not your fault, but I can't seem to kick this childish "but it's NOT FAIR" response. It feels like I wasted my time.

I mean I wanted to win because I like winning and I wanted the prize. It's not that important though, the winning thing, and I'm totally good with losing if the winners played better than me. I just want to feel that we had a chance. It's like if we're competing to climb the Blackpool Tower and it turns out that someone's climbed a smaller tower which happens to be in Blackpool in a shorter time - not against the rules since the exact tower wasn't explicitly specified, but still... I'm disappointed. I feel cheated even though no-one actually cheated.

It was an extra kick in the teeth going into my final match against Voss knowing that we couldn't possibly win now, and hitting two Guards on the flop. Game over, and game over.

I'll make public action already taken: I have asked Pydro to change the result of my game against Baron Blade (which appears to be the primary cause of controversy) to a loss due to moonfall. In the event I had to predict the likely outcome of the practice match, this is it.

let the rest of the scoresheet fall where it may. We had what I think was a fairly strong final round.

I've been away from the computer for a week with work - sorry for the delay. As promised, however, I'm posting some of S.I.E.V.E.'s discussions to show that the test games were not designed as pure practice runs or opportunities for a do-over, but rather part of a much larger strategic discussion regarding hero choices.

It begins:
http://i.imgur.com/o8cjDE7.png

Some Atlantis-specific strategy talk:
http://i.imgur.com/Quz6zuR.png

A plan to shut Dawn down:
http://i.imgur.com/HfNnCqH.png

And, finally, that nasty final round, with an example of how metlarturus used a sample game to verify the viability of a particular card interaction:
http://i.imgur.com/NjCTpaU.png

I'm not happy with the miscommunication or how the whole thing went down, and I wanted to clear the air about the specific circumstances we were dealing with and to reiterate that nobody intentionally cheated. No hard feelings, I hope?
