So the pre-order event is live and we get unlockable stretch goals!

First up? 5 promo cards! Hmmm...that seems like a perfect number for Prime Warden promos! EXCITMENT!!!!

Was all set to order, then saw that the FedEx shipping costs almost as much as the expansion itself. Eff that.

Also, I would rather find a way to support both GTG and my LGS now that these no longer needed to be kickstarted.

I preordered, but I am wondering if there's any chance for cheaper shipping. $15 shipping for a $20 game is pretty crazy. I'd gladly wait for USPS to deliver if it saved some $$.

You can totally buy it from your LGS. However, assuming everything gets unlocked, those mini-expansions are going to cost more than the shipping to a US address.

But if you get it later, you will have to buy the possible mini expansions seperatly and miss out on the promo cards. I had the same thoughts on the shipping cost, but if those things get unlocked it'll save you money in the long run. Just my thoughts on it.

Shipping costs on our web store are calculated by a FedEx plug-in that accurately transmits what WE pay to ship the game to you. So, unfortunately, those shipping rates are what we pay. Yes, we ALWAYS lose money on Kickstarter campaigns due to shipping, since we offer a flat rate there.

As has been pointed out, the price of shipping here should be offset by the free stuff you will get. That said, if you'd rather wait and get the expansion from your FLGS, please do! We love gaming stores and are very interested in making sure getting the games from your local store rather than a website is entirely viable.

What have been the total copies preordered for the other expansions when they were through kickstarter? I am only familiar with the $ focus totals but those were often confused by add ons and other things.  Is 1500 a real stretch or is it reasonable compared to what other preorders have sold?

Hey there, just a few questions on the preorders

To clarify the free enviorments, heros and villians refer to the previous sets released for characters like Unity, Scholar etc.

Meanwhile any word on how soon will the app be updated? That thing serves as our group's lifeline and we're scared at the idea of going back to counters.

Argent Adept: So colorful. I'd really like a lore explaination of that art. Idk, but that seems like a straight up better power than Vocalize. Very interesting.

Haka: That power is awesome! Imagine using Haka of Battle on a Wraithful Retribution. Speaking of which...

Fanatic: My biggest question - Where is she standing

Tempest: I KNEW we would see him with a sword at some point! And talk about a nasty power, thats gonna hurt but its gonna hurt so good!

Captain Cosmic: That is the most badass costume I have ever seen. Great job Adam!

I can't say it's straight up better. It activates an Accompany Text, something Melodies don't have at all. Then when you look at Accompanies and Performs, Syncopated Onslaught's Accompany is not as good as Scherzo of Frost and Flame's Perform. Alacritious Subdominant's Accompany is not as good as Inspiring Supertonic's Perform. Inventive Preperation's Accompany is not as good as Alacritious Subdominant's Perform. Then the Accompany for Inspiring Supertonic may or may not be better than the Perform on Rhapsody of Vigor, depending on who needs healing. This only leaves Cedistic Dissonant and Counterpoint Bulwark that cannot be replicated as a Perform Text.

It's really no surprise that an activate an accompany power actually gets more text than just a perform. Especially with the ease to possibly not even get a card with an accompany text on it, or having a Polyphoric Flare on bottom, ouch.

The new Argent Adept variant should really help him get his deck set up... And let's face it, that's always the most difficult part of playing as the Adept, so this should really bolster him.

Not sure how I feel about the other powers... Haka could be useful for the purposes of making him a healer, I guess, but beyond that, I don't see it as that useful, I'll probably stick with The Eternal Haka.

Fanatic and Tempest... High risk high gain powers... Not sure how I feel about them, but definitely the sorts that you would want a healer on the team for... Nice to see potential psynergy with the team, but I don't think PW Haka with Haka of Healing would be sufficient to support the use of both of them.

And of course, I can't really say anything abotu Captain Cosmic until I know how the rest of his deck is, and how it compares to his default card.

RA

I don't think the Naturalist is high-powered enough. Thematically, I mean.

Look at what these five do. They have insane capabilities and can really go off! (Okay, with the exception of Captain Cosmic - primarily because we don't know what he can do, but he's a hero from outer space so we can probably make some assumptions.) While Naturalist is very capable, he just isn't in the same league as these folks. You know what I mean?

That's just my perception, though. :slightly_smiling_face:

I think I know what the intention here is, but I wanted to see what you folks think...

Prime Haka's power states that another hero may benefit from the "Effects" of a Haka card.  I'm interpreting that as Haka drawing/discarding the cards while another hero gains the damage buff/DR/healing.

Sound correct?

P2

AR

I read it the opposite way, interpreteing "effect" as "card text," and not just the gain of the Haka in question.

Also I found Haka of Shielding useful, especially with Tempest and Fanatic's new powers, with this team, even more so than regeneration.

CH

Power levels nonwithstanding, The Naturalist strikes me as far more of a loner than the other characters.  He's willing to partner with other heroes when the situation necessitates it, but other than that, he prefers to work on his own.  Kind of like Spider-Man for most of his existence: mostly a solo act, but willing to join forces when things get out of hand.  K.N.Y.F.E. feels the same way.

I'm going to be holding my breath until they post the update announcing the unlocked environment.

RO
Ronway
2014-08-06 03:35 UTC

Now I don't know how well this holds up, but this is my thought. The Naturalist is a protector of nature. Akash'Bhuta is made of and uses nature in combat. Prime Wardens was specifically made to fight Akash'Bhuta. If The Naturalist had joined Prime Wardens, that would mean he would be joining a team that is trying to defeat nature. While he may understand their reasonings and not hold any grudges, he does not want to be involved with it.

Now you may say to yourself "hey, you can totally play The Naturalist versus Akash'Bhuta," which is true. There is a difference between being on the scene when Akash'Bhuta strikes and actively hunting her down.

Another reason why he may not be a member of the Prime Wardens, perhaps he did not have his powers the first time Prime Wardens were formed. After all, Akash'Bhuta's first appearance is in Prime Wardens #1. Since Akash'Bhuta is responsible for The Naturalist gaining his powers, it's certainly possible that she was seen before Argent Adept mentions her to The Naturalist.

Wait, so maybe when Haka plays his Haka card on someone else, it's the someone else who gets to draw then discard all the cards for the effect?  I would love for that to be the way it works since it means Haka doesn't need to be continually discarding when he plays a bunch of Hakas, but I'll be surprised if that's actually how it's supposed to work.

Prime Wardens Haka can outright play a card as a Power. For a Hero with as much card draw as Haka, that's very strong.

PW Haka also combines excellent with PW Tempest, in that the damage Tempest gets from the environment when using his power can be redirected to Haka if Enduring Intercession (if that is the right name of the card) is in play.

Yeah, I don't see how it can work that way. The "Haka of" cards do not say "Haka draws" or "Haka discards" – the only mention of Haka is in the second part, e.g. "Increase damage dealt by Haka…" Furthermore, the power allows you to choose any target, not just heroes. The first part of the "Haka of" cards would be nonsensical applied to an environment or villain card.

That's a good point, I hadn't noticed that it can be applied to any target, but it still seems to me that the "effect" of the card is to:

a. Draw Cards

b. Discard Cards

c. Gain some benefit related to the number of cards discarded

instead of just (c.).  I view it as similar to Syntactic Analysis in terms of affecting another hero (although that card does explicitly spell out that the other hero does the drawing.)

Given the problems that can arise if you play it on a non-hero character card target, the card is probably meant to be played your way with Haka doing the drawing and discarding, however until that is made clear I think I will play it with the new target drawing and discarding because it is more fun for me.

Thematically it probably makes more sense your way to because it is as though Haka is performing the Haka on behalf of someone else (instead of teaching it to them.)

Drawing and discarding are not the effects. They are the requirements. Haka performs the requirements. Another hero (may) gain the effect, which is to regain HP or whatever.

SP

That's almost surely the correct interpretation, although there's never been any official demarcation between requirements and effects, and it's a reasonable interpretation to think that the effect of playing the card is that the text on the card is invoked, which would make all of the text on the card the effect.  Reasonable, but probably not what's intended (which is too bad).

RA
Rabit
2014-08-06 15:18 UTC

That's one interpretation. Unfortunately, SotM doesn't officially distinguish requirements from effects. A more formalized "requirement" would be followed by something like "If you do, then…", which isn't the case. (Or be more structurally represented, as in Magic the Addiction.)

Personally, I think thematically the intention is for Haka to draw and discard, then allow another to get the last part. Mechanically, though, we don't have anything on the card but the effect (the entire card), so I think the other hero will draw, discard, and get the last part.

Because I forcus more on thematic aspects, I'll be playing that way (until I hear differently from an official source). :sunglasses:

But there is a difference between cause/effect or trigger/effect that is common in SotM. I agree with you both that I think this is the intent though. I think the "apply effect" wording is important. Maybe you can't "apply" the effect of drawing/discarding, but you can apply the effects of +damage and +healing and +DR. Maybe thats where the difference is.

Before I say anything, let me make it clear: I am not part of Greater Than Games, and this post is entirely speculation.

I'm betting they're pretty busy with Sentinel Tactics right now; I'm guessing that they've begun preparing them to ship, as the Kickstarter for that said that the ship to addresses would be finalized a few hours ago.

Also for further stretch goals, as much as I'd love to see such, I really doubt it. Assuming we hit all stretch goals, there will be three mini-expansions; judging by the mini-expansions that are already out, once they're available for purchase seperately, the environment will probably be 4 USD, and the hero and villain will probably be 5 USD each. This means that if they hit the 1.5k mark, they'll essentially be giving away 14 USD worth of stuff (not counting the promo cards and art prints) for each 20 USD purchase… That's already some pretty strong incentive right now.

CH
chainsawrabbit
2014-08-06 18:25 UTC

I see your point, and agree with you, but the stretch goals were pretty insane for the Shattered Timelines and Sentinel Tactics Kickstarters.  They wouldn't be doing things that way if it was hurting the company.

The more units they print, up to a point, reduces their total cost per unit, opening up their profit margins for additional stretch goals.  This isn't counting the number of units they'll move of the expansion and associated mini-expansions at general retail, which won't include the cost of the art prints.

Make no mistake, I am 300% happy with what they're currently offering.  I'm so excited about more SotM, but the early launch of Sentinel Tactics will tide me over until it lands on my doorstep.  I just like wild speculation.

Besides, Chrono-Ranger, Omnitron-X, Parse, The Scholar, The Naturalist, The Sentinels, and K.N.Y.F.E. don't have any promos, and we don't want anyone to feel left out, do we?  Not to mention, I would squeal with delight if Citizen Dawn got a promo.

Its 60$, three times of thing were buying... There is no some trick or something this time? Like someone preordering it to some cheap place to europe and send it to everyone or something? I were steadfast fan of sotm to this day(kickstarted shattered timelines and tactics with help of ppl from this forum, buying all other expansions in flgs, buying errata cards) but more shipping  costs than tactics? One box full of cards shipping cost, costing more than 4 boxes - two full of plastic, how this can weigh and cost EVEN MORE? It seems leaving kickstart was not a good day for europe fans.

@Chainsawrabbit: Actually, the insane Kickstarter rewards for Shattered Timelines caused GTG to lose money (along with the flat-rate shipping they did for Kickstarters). Obviously not enough to keep them from keeping on, but they did themselves some damage, which is why the GSF and Sentinel Tactics Kickstarters were a lot more modest with their stretch rewards.

Omnitron V is included in the Sentinel Tactics core game.  He's similar to his original form, but I don't think he has the internal drone-manufacturing capabilities.  Instead, it appears he has one large, detachable drone called the Omni-Reaper.  I think it's designed to be an autonomous and highly capable counterpart, more like a homicidal Han and Chewie than the previous incarnations' armies of mindless Stormtrooper-style drones.  I think.  We won't know for sure until the backer rewards for Sentinel Tactics start arriving.

I don't think omnitron V is near as powerful as omnitron IV because reasons. Omnitron X has to be "saved" eventually or at least IV has to go down at some point. Omnitron has a history of gaining power, losing it, then seeking to regain it again. I think that cycle will repeat here.

Omni IV assimilating X is what's gonna make IV such a massive threat to deal with for sure.

And now I want to go see it again.  Good one sir.

My Omnitron 6-9 predictions.

Omnitron 6 wins, takes over the world, and turns all humans into living batteries that survive mentally in an artificial world devoid of superheroes to fuel a planet of robots.

Omnitron 7 has survived the death of the human race and has grown to the size of a large city, fully mechanized and happily chugging away for eons until a group of aliens land on the planet, awakening long compressed and archived memories of organic life.

Omnitron 8 is taken back on the alien ship, which has time travel capabilities.  Omnitron struggles to decide if it is better to survive as he is or fight for his goal to destroy organic life on Earth once and for all.

Omnitron-9  Has merged himself into his alien host bodies and returns to Earth of the past determined to turn all Earthlings into unfeeling robot-men who will do his bidding.  When he fails again, he is determined that instead of turning humans to be part of him, he needs to become more human.

Hrm.

Omnitron I is a villain with a full deck.
Omnitron II is a promo villian card.
Omnitron III is a minion card in another villain’s deck.
Omnitron IV is an environment with full deck.
Omnitron V is a tactics villain with giant mini.

Omnitron X is a hero with full deck.

I predict
Omnitron VI will be Tactics Environment Tiles.
Omnitron VII will be… The box for an expansion.
Omnitron VIII will be a set of dice for tactics.
Omnitron IX will be a playmat.

Forthermore
Omnitron XI will be a promo card as a set of power armor that Unity wears with Omnitron X’s deck.
Omnitron XII will be a Tactics hero.
Omnitron XIII is the Greater Than Games warehouse.

It may not become a new Bunker suit, as in, Vance is gonna be manning the armor for good. But the suit really looks like its being assimilated into the fold (it does say its innevitable!). Probably very similar to what Omni-IV did to X, its just another way for Omnitron to amass power and this time its takeing one of the strongest machines around besides itself.

IV is a big factory to mass produce drones. In X's incap art, the big red eye and the parts surrounding him look far more structural than his other incarnations (which looked more insect like). You can see the wires hanging and the doorway arch…thats a building. I'm pretty confident that its IV.

Both of those, I think, were me. And speculating is half the fun of it all! You make it sound like a bad thing

The omnitron and omnitron X story lines are kinda hard to put together, but heres what I think:

Omnitron 1 - became sentient, rampaged a bit, and was defeated by the F5.

Omnitron 2 - given new life from a mysterious cosmic force, came back, rampaged a bit, and is defeated during the comic story line "Singularity" where Omni-X makes his huge sacrifice to blow omnitron into a million pieces. Those bits find there way into various places and hands…like Baron Blade.

Omnitron 3 - Baron assembled some fragments and used Omnitron to battle with him during Vengeance

Omnitron 4 - Some of those fragments and pieces of code blown up by Omni-X make their way to Mars, where Omnitron tries a different approach and turns himself into a massive factory. Various villains go there to use Omnitron for their means, and at some point Omni-X (who's still in existence because comics and time-space shenanigans) finds himself there again to stop his past self, but somehow this new form overtakes Omni-X and assimilates him to probably build an early proto-type of the Omni-Reaper that we saw in the Tactics Kickstarter.

They are definitely mechanical in nautre. RevoCorp would make a lot of sense. We know they have been studying Omnitrons code since it was first defeated, and at least had a hand in the augmentation of other badguys, namely FrightTrain and Revenant as you said. Could this be RevoCorp's attempt at a robot army force using their knowledge of Omnitrons coding?

Edit: They could also be FILTER related. FILTER kinda resembles SHIELD from marvel, maybe these roboty scary things are close analog to Ultron? Could explain their presence in outerspace and it's importance of showing up in KNYFEs deck.

I think Cosmitron was created by the Wager Master.

I think the Timelines Shattering was helped by him.

From the post where he is introduced I don't think he just showed up suddenly, I think he has been around, testing the heroes of the planet to find out what unique strengths these humans have, by tinkering with reality.

After all, he is literally made of the possibilities that didn't happen.  Shattering the barrier between reality and alternate realities would seem to be his thing.  The whole Iron Legacy/Dark Visionary arcs reek of Wager Master.

It sounds like a lot of what has been happening he has been influencing.

If so, we need to hear more about him.

I was thinking the opposite. Wager Master comes after Visionary starts changing the odds of certain events, by breaking through the timelines.

Cosmitrons bio is critical here: OMNITRON was reborn.  Planet Earth was in grave danger.  And a cosmic force watched from a vast distance away, almost disinterested in the outcome of its own experiment

It's interesting that, if this is the work of Wager Master, he wouldn't be interested in the outcome. But he also toys with people and reality, and so that could make a lot of sense here. But the wording "outcome" sounds like betting terms.

I'm inclined to agree with you on this one Skippy

Note also the pronoun "it", which is also used in Wager Master's bio. I believe Omnitron is the only revealed villain that uses that pronoun.

Since the 1,500 looks like a lock (mine was 1,405, I think), I went ahead and placed my pre-order along with some other small bits I never bothered to pick up before (extra tokens, Silver Gulch, Final Wasteland) so the whole package looks a lot more reasonable with the P&P. Yay.

Just a shame they don't have the Oversized Villain Cards in stock, as I would've added those to the order, assuming they'd be replenished by shipping in December. Would I be able to add them, plus any adjustment to the P&P, to the order at a later date if they became available?

FYI for Canadians (or perhaps other internationals) - if you order multiple copies, the shipping price per copy goes way down. For me, the shipping on one copy is $34. So far I've gotten 4 other locals together, and for 5 copies the shipping price per copy is just $12.

Apparently that's the shipping price the Americans are bitching about, but I'm pretty happy about it =)

In case you're wondering, Paul said in the post comments: "You get 1 sets of bonus things per copy of Wrath of the Cosmos you order, so feel free to consolidate!"

Definitely feel free to consolidate! In fact, we specifically *encourage* consolidation on this preorder since it will save you so much on shipping. One of the big advantages of doing a preorder through our website instead of a Kickstarter campaign is that we can calculate actual shipping for a package of any weight, so consolidations are easy (unlike on Kickstarter, where they are so complicated as to be unworkable).

I think that’s supposed to be his Dead Pool personality shining through and breaking the fourth wall. In the Dead Pool comics, DP is constantly talking to the reader and even blaming the writers of his comic for any mishaps or his lack of fame/money/movie rights/etc.

Guise saying it’s not his fault for not getting cards in the table is him acknowledging that he is in a game (ie fourth wall breakage) and is blaming the player for his misfortune.

The back cover reads: "Now, this latest version of Omnitron is incorporating is incorporating the tech and programming of each of the previous versions, learning from its failures." (Emphasis added.)

Then on the inside it reads: "It intends to assimilate all of the caches of its previous programming." (Emphasis added.)

So it's better to assume that said head is not X, but rather part of one of the first four versions of Omintron. And considering IV is an environment, I think it's safe to assume it'll have plenty of heads to spare.

But on the subject of the promo card, while I am eager to see an Omnitron X alt, I'm really hoping that this will be the new Tachyon alt.

I've heard this claim before, but according to whose bio (and which one)? Omintron-X's bio on sentinelsofthemultiverse.com doesn't say anything like this.

I think this is just referring to the gameplay in the Omnitron-V scenario book. Omnitron-V has already assimilated Omnitron-X at that point, and is now looking for the other bits of itself.

Omnitron-V mentions nothing about X... So I assumed you meant Omni-Reaper. And indeed, it does mention X... It says that IV "..spelled one of the greatest threats to the heroes, including the future version of Omnitron itself."; it doesn't actually say it killed/assimilated him, just proved to be "one of the greatest threats". It also implies that other parts of Omnitron came through the time rift, not just those belonging to X, which could possibly become important with VI-IX (and seems to have been with the creation of Omni-Reaper).

So it eats X and in doing so destroys its empathy "chip". It becomes more powerful, but not powerful enough to destroy the heroes so it continued to evolve... eventually figuring out that it is the empathy that give the heroes the edge and decides to add it to himself in the his 10th iteration. Begin time loop.

But now Omnitron is informed of the errors, they shall be avoided. There will be failsafes on the chip, that will ultimately not prevent the problem as Omnitron is looking at things logically, and empathy is not very logical.

Alternatively, Omnitron X, who would also know the history, could have implemented a wipe of exactly what caused its creation, or even engineered a virus to ensure Omnitron is blind to the consequences.

The only podcasts I've ever listened to have been board game related podcasts.  I had to wait for my wife to run some errands and my daughter to be asleep, but I managed to listen.  Very interesting stuff.

Skyscraper sounds really cool mechanically.  I don't think anyone predicted she would work the way that Christopher describes her.  As for the reveal of new villains:

SPOILERS BELOW

I would guess that Progeny will be The Scholar's nemesis bases on the fact that it changes forms.  He talked about Deadline and Warfang (couldn't make out the first name) who are the reptilian and female villains on the WotC box respectively.  At first I assumed Warfang would be Skyscraper's nemesis and Deadline would be Captain Cosmic's, but now I think it could be the opposite.  IIRC, Christopher mentioned that it's interesting who brings Skyscraper to Earth.  I wonder if Deadline brings Skyscraper to Earth as a "herald" (for lack of a better word) and she ends up being the Silver Surfer to his Galactus.

If I were to take a random shot at Deadlines nemesis after listening to the Deadlines story, I would guess the Naturalist.

Deadline believes that mankind is is on a path to destruction. The Naturalist was "Michael Conteh was a very well known name in industrial development." But now "The Naturalist now works to protect the environment and the world from those who would destroy or exploit it for their own means." Showing that man can change its ways.

My shot in the dark.

Yea, I do enjoy how well thought out the plot/connections/symbolisms are. Makes it fun to research and theorize what the next hook is.

Edit:

i can see the battle playing out like...

Deadline: Mankind is on a path of destruction, even you "heroes" cannot deny this. I, regrettably, must put a stop to all of this in order to avoid it.

Naturalist: It is true, mankind has it's faults. I have my own history of failure, but Deadline, man CAN change! *Morphs into a rhino"

the battle would be a hard one with Deadline looking like he's coming out on top, but instead of the outcome being won by violence, the Naturalist enters a series of flashbacks and monologues about his backstory that eventually convince Deadline that his current path isn't the only way to curb the impending destruction.

See, the way I understood it, her mechanical party role changes based on her size.  When tiny, she's a saboteur.  When giant, she's a beat-stick. When normal sized, she's more versatile.  At any size, though, she's a resistance fighter against Voss.

Ah, so what I'm inferring is: it's similar to the naturalist, yet slightly different.

she can play her sabotage cards at any size (and probably her big hit cards as well), so her hand is never useless. But similar (and different) to how the naturalists has additional effects from the card if he is in the particular form, Sky-Scraper instead has increased effects from the card if she is in a certain size.

example: nat one shot, naturalist does X. If nat is in form A then he also does Y.

sky one shot, sky does X. If sky is in size A then she adds N to X.

JA

Maybe she has something like "sabotage" cards (or whatever keyword) and her different character cards have powers that interact with these keywords differently. For instance, her miniature character card has a power that destroys equipment based on the number of "sabotage" cards that are out (or in the trash, or discarded), whereas her normal size card is more of a scout and allows her to draw cards based on the number of sabotage cards, and then her giant card has her deal damage based on the number of "sabotage" cards out.

Ha. You guys were right!! Speculation IS fun!!

I must say I am quite late to the SotM party. Purchased the core set almost 2 weeks ago and have at least 8 solo plays under my belt.

Since purchase and playing, this game has “fired” all other games at my table.

I have only played against Baron Blade and Omnitron. Want to defeat all 4 core villans at all 4 different environments before adding expansions to my options. And yes, I have purchased Vengence, Root City/Relics, The Scholar, and pre-ordered WotC (after having 1 play under my belt, I’m #1692). I have asked my LGS to get me the Unity and Silver Gultch mini expansions, too (buy local).

So, having been written, I can paitently wait for this expansion to be produced. Between now and Dec, I should play a lot more and not run out of options or combinations or permutations.  :slightly_smiling_face:

Looking forward to seeing more stretch goals hit. Happy with what we have now.  :stuck_out_tongue:

Finally got round to listening to the Podcast thingy. I am guessing that the mention of Captain Cosmic being "British" more speficially means "English"? Because I believe our full name is something like "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland", thus "Britain" includes Scotland and Wales as well (so CC isn't the first Brit because Knyfe was there first ;)). Anyway, it's cool hearing all the stuff I didn't know…though having already had sneaky access to the new heroes and villains (don't think the environments were available at the time) via playing with a playtester, some of what was discussed was stuff I was already aware of.

I'm guessing from the references to "zomg Omnitron in Omnitron IV is really hard", coupled with the fact that we know Omni-IV is basically a drone factory, probably means that there are cards which affect everything with the "Drone" keyword or something. Like an ongoing which is a drone upgrade and gives all drones +1 damage and/or +1 soak or something. There has been no mention of any benefits to Omni-10 so I'm guessing that there is no mass component-helping card which he could gain from as well. Oh, eek, what about device-helper cards too. Like, "bring all devices from their respective trashes into play", the round after you manage to narrowly destroy the second EPE before it went off. Nooooo…

Anyway, it's cool hearing Christopher talking about this stuff. It doesn't come across as "I'm a game designer, so this is me talking about the stuff I want you to buy so my company makes money and then I can make more stuff for you to buy", but more like "Omg look at this really cool stuff I made, it's like a really cool story with characters and omg there's all this cool stuff that happens and…what? You like it too? Cool, here, we're making loads more and when you've got all of it you can see all the coolness that we already know about but can't tell you because spoilers and omg isn't this fun?!?!? Oh yeah, and because you like my stuff you can have some free stuff because I like free stuff and it means I get to make more stuff in order to give it you for free and oh by the way please keep telling me all the cool stuff you're doing with the cool stuff I made because I think that's really cool when you do! <explodes with enthusiasm/excitement overload>" :D.

In my 6v2 variant games that my group like to play one of our favorite scenarios is playing against Omnitron and Cosmitron in Wagner Base while they are trying assimilate Omnitron-X. So it's basically a race to defeat the two Omnitrons before they fulfill the required steps to Omnitron-X one of their own (he is an incapped NPC in that scenario) I imagine we will have to update it to somehow fit Omnitron-IV into it... without making it TOO hard (it's already pretty damn tough as it is).

I'm finally jumping into this thread and saying what I have to say (and haven't already said in comments on posts) about all the information we now have.

1.  Christopher's personality, as demonstrated in the podcast, brings me great joy.  He clearly hasn't "gone corporate" at all; he's a total goober who's absolutely thrilled to have found an audience, not because he loves the attention but because he likes making others happy and creating something that they really like.

2.  I couldn't help but notice that Prime Wardens Fanatic has an extremely prominent, er, pelvic area.  It makes it a bit difficult for me to pay attention to the rest of her art.  (Not in a sex-pervert sense, but just like a what-the-hell-is-she-wearing-with-a-figure-like-that-and-posing-in-such-a-way kind of reaction.)

3.  Omnitron-IV is awesome.  I said that already in comments, and others have said it here, but it bears repeating.

4.  Deadline, Progeny, and Kaargra Warfang.  That's 3 of the 4 villains we have names for, and assuming that Progeny is the guy on Reveal the Flaws (which seems sensible to assume), we've also seen them all.  That means one villain remains who's a complete mystery.  Maybe, just maybe, it's Captain Cosmic's evil brother?

5.  We now know that one environment is Dok'Thorak, while the other is almost certainly that alien arena.  I'm a little dissapointed that we won't have the ability to fight actually in space, with zero gravity and zero air and so forth; I was figuring one environment would probably be an asteroid belt or the wreckage of a destroyed planet or something.  But oh well.

6.  Sky-Scraper is really interesting to think about, given the reveal that she has multiple character cards for her sizes.  Since these all have different Powers, I'm guessing that she'll use cards to change, essentially being the opposite of the Naturalist in that regard.  Thusly, you might have cards like "Sky-Scraper becomes Huge, then deals one target 5 melee damage", or "Prevent the next 3 damage that would be dealt to Sky-Scraper; when damage is prevented this way, she becomes Tiny".  It's also neat that her incap powers will differ depending on what size she was when she fell; I'd imagine that if she dies Huge, she offers large amounts of damage reduction by virtue of the idea that the heroes can literally hide behind her body.  Whereas if she's defeated while Tiny, maybe she's shrunk to microscopic size and hiding in the villain's ear canal, so she can disturb his balance and reduce the damage he deals by 1 per instance, rather than protecting specific heroes from big heavy hits.

I'd be shocked and amazed if Greater Than Games gut punched Handelabra on an exclusive like that.  It'd be pretty sour business.  I want a Super Scientific Tachyon as much as every other Paul, Maia, and Dana out there, but I'd be a bit disappointed in them if they crumpled like that over a bit of fan dissonance.

That being said I'd totally be down for a third Tachyon promo card.

There are 5 milliseconds in between when I get to my hotel room and when I fall asleep. In those 5 milliseconds, I can post to the forum,  fix some bugs, and  check the weather for tomorrow.

It's going really well! Over a thousand people have tried the game and there's still a day to go. The response is overwhelmingly positive, which gives me all the feels. We're getting lots of useful feedback and suggestions. The main constructive criticism is that players familiar with Sentinels want it to go faster - skipping dialogs, faster animations, etc. And we're totally gonna let you do that =). The demo is slowed down a bit because at PAX we also have a lot of people brand new to Sentinels, and we have to try to teach them a little bit about the game in a very short amount of time.

There is a hint of KNYFE's interest in cosmic events in KNYFE's bio:

I for one am glad it's not a villain, just because that would have given us an odd number of villain promos.  Very happy to get an alternate version of a previously single-character-card hero.  (I wonder if there will eventually be one for every hero; I find it hard to picture how the Naturalist could work with no Transform power, for instance.)

We could have an interesting promo where he is just discovering his powers and therefore cannot change at will, not sure what kind of a power he would need to counteract being hamstrung by luck of the draw on his animal forms though. Possibly a "bottom of a deck" mechanic involved somehow?

Maybe it'll be sort of like Unity having to user her power to play her golems usually.   Something along the lines of:

Unstable Form

Power:  Play a card from your hand and choose a form icon on that card.  You are considered to have that form until the end of this turn (or maybe start of the next turn).

It would still let him get effects out of a lot of his cards without having a form out, but at the expense of using his power for the turn.  Could even result in some interesting combos like having one form out but using the effect of a different form on a one shot.

Yeah, but that's because Overdrive mentioned Strike by name; That's not the problem with Naturalist, his relience on changing forms is. It's a different source for the issue, so -- while it's the same issue -- the solution would have to be different.

I actually thought of much the same thing; play a card, and activate a symbol on it if you are not already in a form.

I think ideas like that would seem too much like "different simply for the sake of being different".  I'd rather that, if he's to have a new power at all, it was just something like "Scout:  Draw four cards, then put two cards from your hand on top of your deck and two on the bottom."  That would help him find form cards, but it would also make him more generally effective even while living without a Form, to the point that staying human all game might well be viable.

Pfft. You guys and needing to get The Naturalist into a form. I have seen him played without ever getting a form into play, so he isn't as reliant on being an animal as you folks let on.

MC

I feel like it could be justified; maybe something happened to his powers ("Do not put too much trust in your powers, for powers are tools, and all tools can fail" -- The Naturalist, Natural-born Vigor) and he can only partially transform. Like Kehrolyn from BattleCon. The playing cards and activating triggers represents him taking on ASPECTS of that creature, rather than the full form, and it balances itself fairly well. An extra card each turn in place of the passives of the form, and being able to activate triggers from a form you aren't in would help to neutralize the issue of feeling like the cards from a form you aren't in are dead cards.

Here's what I'm thinking:

Unstable Form

Select one of the following: [gazelle symbol] [rhino symbol] [croc symbol]
Until the start of your next turn, you may activate the chosen symbol as if you were in that form.

At the end of your turn, destroy all form cards.

That reduces the side effects of not being able to retrieve your forms, being that you would just stick in Rhino or Crocodile the whole time with no drawbacks.

AM

If you could decide to be in a Form as your innate power, you'd only ever be able to use the Form-specific parts of powers (Natural Form's Power, for example) if you had Natural-Born Vigour out, or someone else let you use a power. Actually, you wouldn't even be able to use the Form-specific parts of one-shots either, because the effect (of "pretending" to be in a form) would be gone before you reached your next Play phase ;).

MA
Matchstickman
2014-09-08 00:46 UTC

That's a pretty bad power considering you have to either be able to use two powers to make use of it or rely on someone else to allow you to play a card, highly restrictive either way.

Better if it is "until the end of your next turn", like Expat's Aim. It's all about adaptability or (to entirely misuse it, even if it is more in theme for the Naturalist) evolution.

So, a question for Christopher if he's willing to answer it.  Was Rogue Agent Knife always meant to exist (as I assume Guise was intended to exist at least since Vengeance came out - even if there was a risk his printing would be aborted, he was at least part of the original plan)?  Or did you create her specifically because of this unlock (as with Super-Science Tachyon)?

In the comment section for the Wrath of the Cosmos preorder, they mention that the plan is another couple years.  Considering the frequency of expansions, I'm guessing that means 1-2 more expansions after Wrath of the Cosmos.

However, based on the size of the Vengeance box, it looks like it will hold the Vengeance decks, plus 5 more hero decks, 9 more villain decks, and 4-5 more environment decks (they're skinny).  So, it'll fit the cards from Wrath of the Cosmos and the expansion after it.  If there's two more expansions after wrath, then they'll need a bigger box (especially if they close out with another mega-expansion like Vengeance).

I love what the >G guys and girls do for us and (think I) know how hard they work for us to get the game out to us, never mind all those lovely extras as well, but I never take anything they say regarding a timeline seriously, it's either ridiculously padded (to our benefit) or ignored for more important things (which I'm also good with).

Maybe Jansa has already made a start? The true source of Haka's immortality is still a mystery isn't it? Could Haka have been offered immortality as he died in the desert, yet unaware of his pact with Jansa when he regained consciousness the following morning?

On another note, consider the timeline that ends with the Final Wasteland, Con's Bunker and Haka of Knowledge. Is this a timeline where Deadline is successful at driving Humanity back to the dark ages, thus avoiding the attentions of Jansa? Or a timeline where both Deadline and Jansa are defeated, Humanity descends into an extinction event, and only Haka is left? Or a timeline where Jansa destroys Humanity but Haka somehow survives the Terminarch's clutches (or has returned to Earth as an Endling in the same way that Deadline left the enclave)?

According to Con, the Final Wasteland came about when Plague Rat's infection got out of control and took out the human population to the extent that all the gribbly monsters came out of hiding and decided to take the planet for themselves. That's why there're Rat Beasts - they're the "descendants" of Plague Rat.

I don't think Jansa is a villain. I think he's a good guy; he doesn't make species extinct, he preserves their memory by saving one of them, and keeps them immortal in the Enclave.

Also, do we know if Jansa is male or female? I keep referring to him as male, but the name seems a bit feminine (it's pronounced YAN-sa Vee DARE-o) so whatever.

I really like Deadline's backstory, though. I can't wait to see Progeny's and Kaargra's. And the last, mystery villain.

Deadline is very cool, but we already knew most of this stuff from Adam's discussion of him in the GFBR podcast; about all we actually gained from this update was some art, the name of his species, and mention of the Enclave and Jansa.  I'm not complaining really, but I'd much rather have found out what Kaargra's deal is or gotten some info about the fourth villain (Progeny we know almost as much about as Deadline, though he too would have been an improvement, since most of what we know is mechanics and these updates are pretty much all flavor).

P2

I could see Jansa possibly being a bad future villain.   Deadline just stole tech from this council and becomes a major threat to Earth.   Who's to say that maybe this council isn't part of the reason some of these races are being wiped out or that maybe Jansa doesn't have a more devious reason for gathering those who are last of their race.

Maybe Jansa's intentions are benevolent but at this point anything is possible.

It may well be that Deadline's actions, which provoke the heroes to defeat him, may lure Jansa to earth in order to protect the loss of a unique species (Deadline) in his collection. Is there any chance of finding out a bit about how Captain Cosmic and/or Guise play from either the GtG team or the playtesters? I must confess I'm always interested most in finding out about the new heroes (and remain impressed as to how they all feel quite different from each other).

I know playtesters aren't allowed to discuss them and currently the GtG folks are at Aus Pax.   Even if they were here I imagine the best we will get is a character background story until the expansion is released.  Though I am big fan of the characters bios.

Captain Cosmic fights with hardened yellow snow.  This is so true it hurts.

Guise has a sidekick that is a big secret, most playtesters don't even know about.  You see mystical cosmic energy once turned a tasty Indian lentil dish sentient, and it formed a wierd spicy collective right when Guise walked by, it followed him secretly, and still does.  In the future he learns of its existence and they form the greatest super hero duo of all time.  Guise and Dahls.

Seeing some rule changes. Guise's power looks like it changed, although I can't read it because of pixelation. Neutralizing Resonator discards a card instead of putting the top card of the discard under the deck. That's cool. Ocular Swarm looks like it changed, too, but I can't tell what it says... maybe "whenever the heroes destroy a Manifestation card..."? Interesting...

Also, I just want to point out... look at the gameplay text on that 3rd card there. That looks NASTY.

What we can deduce from the cards in the image:

Top card is easy, full text is boring for speculation posts.

second card:

"Cortex"

"Play this reduce target at the deals."  This clearly reduces the number of targets in play at the start of the game.

third card:

Colo. . . assume it says "Color"

"Switch card sky-dam if."  Apparently an indecisive space beaver that has something to do with color.

Scion

"When this deals each then, if the cards in other than Increase."  Hmm. . . My guess is that this card increases "all target" damage by the number of targets damaged.  Obviously some kind of peer pressure-rebranding theme.

Begining

"Destroy Destroy Destroy"  Obviously a clear rip-off of the Dr. Who Serial "Genesis of the Daleks."

The other cards I can't figure out, but that's what we have so far.

So, we actually did something new and different with Guise's innate power: each printed version of Guise comes with a slightly different character card. Some of you will get a Guise who deals damage. Others, a Guise who can heal, or draw extra cards. It all makes sense for Guise, and so rather than containing him to just one innate power, we gave him thousands.

I look forward to everyone comparing notes on all the different innate powers! And remember, keep on saving the MultiGuise!

That got me pretty amped up for the expansion.  The villains sound awesome.  Before reading that, with no prior knowledge, I was interested in Capt. Cosmic but not so much in Skyscrapper.  That has now reversed.  Skyscrapper sounds like a lot of fun.  I'll have to wait and see with the Capt…  My excitement for this expansion has reached a new level.

Agreed. I was having a serious philosophical debate with myself - 'will reading this spoil things for me? Will I

still be excited after reading it? - and desire for any WotC knowledge won out. Now I'm even more excited than before.

Sky Scraper is a great deck.  She's no Nightmist or Haka though.

Sky-Scraper*
Not scrapper.

I don’t understand why people STILL can’t get that right.

I know, that drives me irrationally crazy.

That extra P makes you pronounce it incorrectly, as if it rhymes with "crapper".

A scrapper is someone who gets into fights.  So, I can totally see why people still call Sky-Scraper Sky-Scrapper.  She's feisty and gets into fights a lot.

To me that suggests that she has a bone to pick with the sky.

Could be.  Maybe it fell on her once.  So she got so mad she grew 50' tall and punched the sky in the face.

Yeah, but a skyscraper is already a thing. It's a play on the fact that she can become really really tall, like those giant buildings.

Skyscrapper isn't even an existing word. If she was Sky-Scrapper, that would mean someone who fights in the sky, and as far as I can tell she isn't particularly sky-based.

Basically Sky-Scraper is an interesting superhero name that makes sense and is an allusion to a familiar object. Sky-Scrapper is a crap name, superhero or otherwise.

Maybe she pulls the recyclable materials off the sky to sell to junkyards.

I found out too late! I missed the preorder bonus!

Will anyone be getting an extra set?

I missed the preorder window, and will be buying Wrath of the Cosmos from my FLGS- but that means no promos! :(
If you'll be getting an extra set, I'd love to buy it from you.

As far as I know, the best way to fill the gap is through ArtsCow - the unofficial copies are very good, and totally OK with >G. ...Only problem at the moment is there are no hi-res scans of the new cards available yet.

I also have a copy of the game Ghost Stories if you want to talk turkey.
I've already tried getting in touch with >G, but they said no way.

I've posted on BGG and reddit, but no luck so far. Can anybody help?

First step, try to find a FLGS that got in on the pre-order and see if you can get the promo's there.

If that fails and no volunteers come out for trade just grab the scans once they are available, which will be not too long after the game hits release.

By color scheme Purple with a bit of red I'd say Baron Blade, and the other one with pretty much same pale green all over might be Revenant. I don't have eagle eyes so you might want to take this with a grain of salt, but it's my take on that.

IMO It's most likely the final cosmic entity boss thing that's been teased (well, I think it's been teased)

My favoite thing about Guise is that he gets incapped by getting incapped.  It reminds me of my favorite book from Kindergarten, The Monster at the end of this book, and that is a very good thing.  I will probably refuse to flip his card.  Because seriously, don't do that to Guise.
