Edit: I wanted to add the print and play options people have created so far from the Jagged Earth Kickstarter and put it all in one place instead of having to search for links. I do not claim any of these as my own and giving credit where it is due. Remember these may not be the final copies that will come with Jagged Earth but they are what we have based off pictures of reviews and what is shown on the kickstarter.

Rules on Isolate mechanic according to Braithwrathe (needed to be able to play Finder):

Essentially, it seals off a land and make it inaccessible.  Here are the pertinent bits:

1. Invaders skip all explore actions in Isolated lands (they do not explore into them, even if there is a building on the land, and they are not a source of explorers)

2. For invader pieces, Isolated lands are not considered adjacent to anything... unless you want them to be. So they can't be gathered/pushed unless you allow it.

3. Sorry, but Isolate doesn't prevent blight from cascading.

As the kickstarter goes and if someone creates a new thing to add, please shoot me a message and I will add it here.

Original Post

Lets talk about our wishlist for the kickstarter that is supposely happening next week for spirit island.

Mine contains the following:

-5 and 6 player expansion with enough minis to make this possible. The one in the store just adds tokens for spirits but not enough invaders, dahan, fear, etc.

-at least 4 new spirits (we know of 2)

-one of the spirits that cause invaders to go to war with themselves.

-a promo spirit of  Akash'bhuta in some shape or form

-a promo spirit of Mr. Chomps, because we need Mr. Chomps in more games!!!!

-a promo spirit of Erik called The One who Creates, just because it would be fun.

-a promo spirit of Christopher called The Powerful One.

-5 new adversaries. I would love to see a few that are not European, maybe a Viking one? another fun one would be a sibling tribe of dahan that want to invade? Martians wanting to make this their new home to invade the rest of the world so the spirits are actually saving the planet?

-new scenarios? Not sure how much I want more of these. I like the adversaries more

-a dahan civil war mode? Maybe some dahan go bad and want to industrialize and overthrow the other dahan. This easily could be explain as "The island has been invaded before and the spirits have chased off the invaders but some of the dahan are looking at the technology left behind and decide to start using it and leaving their dahanning ways. The spirits are unhappy and have decided to chase off the dahan that have turned their backs on them."

-currently everything seems very colonial as invaders, what would happen if invaders from 2018 would show up instead?

-the expansion is currently done with playtesting and all GTG has to do is send it to the printers and we will have it in 6 months and no 2 year delay (:

On your last one, the big delay is the art.

Your first point h as been mentioned in a few interviews as one of the design goals.

I've heard tell that someplace Paul has said there will be at least 8. I know that Eric did a podcast interview where he confirmed a 3rd spirit as being in (Volcano Looming High).

From what else I know, I think you'll be happy on some of your other points.

New adversaries and scenarios would be nice. Really, I just want new colors of presence tokens. :B It's a travesty that Rampant Green can't be green!

I think a more thematic approach to Akash'buta would be a vs. scenario.  An Akash'buta miniature, roaming the board and devouring presence, dahan, and colonists with the goal of gaining enough power to destroy the Nexus of the Void.

Forgot to add a bigger box to my wishlist. The bigger box needs to be big enough to hold the current stuff, the new expansion, and the 5 to 6 player expansion. It also needs to be big enough to hold another 3-4 expansions Incase they are done.

(I get and like the joke, so don't take this wrong! ;-)

I love the BIG Sentinels box and think that was a wonderful way to approach the storage situation! But I hope for SI they just give us a big box that holds it all (later, when they are done with expansions), and have someone like Broken Token create inserts for it to structure the interior. :-D

One minor point from the first post...Vikings are European - Scandinavia is part of Europe :P. Also, the stereotypical raid-and-pillage Viking types (no, they didn't actually wear horned helmets) were doing their thing several hundred years before the colonial era, which I think was more aorund the 16-1700s...

But anyway, yeah looking forward to all the new spirits. And I agree that a single box into which everything could fit comfortably would be nice :).

True. Was really thinking about some Asian ones when I said that. Maybe the Japanese? Also I was trying to say that they didnt have to stick to colonial times fully. There could be a Viking one earlier. I guess it boils down to if they want to keep the invaders all coming from the same era in time or not.

OOOOOOOO I just had a thought of another idea for the expansion!!!

Time has passed, and the island has too - therefore new map tile? Be interested to have a tile that does not have an ocean on it at all but not sure how to make that balance and work.

Several of things on this made me excited and sad. Badlands looks interesting, but still would have liked to have seen the Dahan Civil War. I really like the Archapelico idea, this is a fun way to make it so 6 players could have 2 related games going on at once so it won’t get as bogged down. The second spirit shown off had an interesting spirit track but at same time really confused how it works.

This video is amazing. I'm almost certainly going to back this on Kickstarter :-D

I paused the video on pretty much every piece of text to take it in. I'ts unlikely I'll have the time to make any proxies (just had my first child) but I'll be counting down the days until I can play with this.

I'm wondering, some of the wordings seemed pretty wonky or unclear to me -- are you still at a point in production where you can tweak wordings? I'd offer my suggestions for improvements if so.

Was going through the video again and just realized, the expansion may contain the 5-6 player board but not the 5-6 player expansion. Am I reading this wrong? Time to summon Paul and Maggie for a clarification. Need this info so I know if I need to buy the 5-6 player expansion.

That's a great big "we don't know" right now. In the July or August "State of GtG" thread, Paul mentioned that they've hired Chris (Braithwhite) as a Playtest Manager and were making moves toward adding new playtesters to the rolls. And I know that at Gen Con, they were collecting info from people who were interested in getting added to the rolls. But since then... crickets.

I just talked to Paul about this yesterday.  I've been holding off on a new open call for testers while I set up several internal testing procedures, as well as revamping how we communicate with our testers.  Now that Earth Prime is done, Prime War and Jagged Earth need a lot of focus testing.  As such, I want to bring on new testers, and I'll be making another open call.  I'll make a general announcement next week, but if you are seriously interested, just send me a DM.

I can not back until later tonight but after looking at the kickstarter, two questions come to mind:

1) The Broken Token insert is great but what is the timetable for release. I would kinda like to have it now and pay the extra 10 dollars compared to waiting until May 2020.

2) All of the add-ons look great, especially the preminum token pack. However my wife gave me a price limit that I am trying to respect for this kickstarter so if I can not get this during the kickstarter, will this be available in retail or on the website or is this a kickstater exclusive.

First child — congratulations!  I only skimmed the video, but couldnt tell:  were there sufficient shots of the spirit boards/power cards to be able to make proxies? (Or does anyone have the relevant language?)  If so, I’d be happy to make some similar to the ones I did for Grinning Trickster/Burning Plague.  I’ve rather got the hang of it now, and it shouldn’t take too long.

I think I could have made proxies from what'sin the video. I think there was only one power card in the shot of six that I couldn't see all of the elements of but it may be in some other shot (or you may be able to guess)

I will not be able to make proxies at this time. I have way too many other things to do that are a lot more important, and it's hard for me to get any games to the table, let alone Spirit Island which is a longer commitment.

I would love to be a playtester but if there's any expectation that I'll be able to play a certain number of games, I'm not sure  I can commit to it. I'll wait for the general announcement and see where things are :-)

Posting proxies of the GenCon playtest spirits was OK with GTG, so since these spirits are still “in beta,” so to speak, I’m assuming that posting proxies of the new spirits is OK as well.  I’ve started the Kickstarter Proxy Project, in which I’ll be making/posting proxies of the two newly revealed Spirits (Finder of the Hidden Paths and Many Minds Move as One).

I’ve posted Finder of the Hidden Paths today – the board (front and back) and the cards (front only; back still to come).  The link is below, but there’s one problem/issue – I couldn’t see any write up on how the “Isolate” mechanic works, which will make playing Finder a little limited.  Any playtesters/others out there who could share the details on “Isolate”?

I’m not personally going to host a UK group buy this time, even if there is an option to do so. The reason being that the shipping cost is only $15 which is about £12. Given that Collect Plus are charging £6.29 for up to 5Kg and will probably be higher in eighteen months time I don’t see any appreciable saving to be made by grouping purchases. You might save a quid or even two but I doubt it’s worth the effort. Paul Watson might want to try arranging a collect-in-person arrangement for Sentinel Days but I’m happy just to go direct this time and not have the hassle of all those trips to the post office.

I’ve got to say though that the lack of freebies is damaging my value perception this time. I’ve never had a problem with full MSRP and high shipping on GTG Kickstarters because the free stuff you get has always been more than worth it and group buys enabled us to turn them into very attractive deals. This time there isn’t much outside of the box and I think it’ll be the first time it’s been financially detrimental to back the KS rather than wait for retail. I’m still going to back because I want to guarantee a copy and boy do I love this game, but I can’t find a suitable retort this time around to the people complaining about value.

And, also, I still haven't had any response or follow up to our Oblivaeon group buy not having shipped and I just don't want to have this responsibility hanging over me again. Even Spiral have no idea where the items are other than somewhere "on the water". Man I love GTG and what they do but clarity and repsonse time on communication is a constant trial.

Full MSRP is likely going to be $79.95 like it is for the core set and the promo pack for this set bought afterwards will at least be $10.   Not including anything about shipping but you’re paying $59 for $90+ worth of content.   Add on that with the rate of sales of the main game this guarantees you a copy of the expansion and promos when it’s released.

Isolate is a new concept that some of the Jagged Earth powers and a few spirits (like Finder) utilize.

Essentially, it seals off a land and make it inaccessible.  Here are the pertinent bits:

  1. Invaders skip all explore actions in Isolated lands (they do not explore into them, and they are not a source of explorers)

Oh cool, thanks PWatson :). So does that mean you pledged and I give you the money or do I need to pledge and put a note saying you're paying shipping? I feel like I've done both on different Kickstarters in the past (and the last one would've been Oblivaeon so that was ages ago and I can't remember how that one worked ;)). I'd like to get the token tray thing as well...was tempted by the wooden tokens but some of them I wouldn't be using and it would push the price total up pretty high, so I'll skip those.

Indeed, but I do have to include the shipping and taxes in that calculation as they are direct costs associated with the purchase. The base game over here is currently £58 retail including taxes and shipping but it’s been cheaper, so regardless of MSRP that’s the ballpark figure of acquiring the expansion at retail. Compare that to the £72 Jagged Earth KS will cost with taxes and shipping and it’s tight with the difference between the two being roughly what it would cost to acquire the promos. Previously, GTG KS campaigns were a no-brainer because all the freebies meant that it was definitely a good deal even with as much as $50 shipping added on. This is the first one where backing is not enticing beyond being able to guarantee a copy and not having the hassle of tracking down the promo pack. Which, like I said, I’m happy to pay up front for, I just can’t reasonably tell anybody else what a great deal they will be getting.

We may also have something happen like with the core game, but the currently planned MSRP, based on their GFE from their manufacturer, is $59.95. That said, originally planned MSRP for Spirit Island itself was $49.95 and things had to change about 3-4 months out from release.

I don’t need persuading dude, I’ve already backed! I’m just saying that in the past I too used to be a GTG flag waver because the added value was always so awesome that it was crazy to complain about MSRP pricing when the free stuff was worth as much or more than the game itself. This one though there is no tangible benefit unless you want to argue pennies. Again, not complaining just pointing it out, my money is in on this regardless but I can see why people are salty about the price.

Just to make sure I understand it correctly, does the “not adjacent” part also mean that towns/cities in Isolated lands aren’t considered “sources” of Explorers?   In other words, if the Invaders would ordinarily explore into a certain land because it’s adjacent to a town (which is the only “source” of explorers), but the land where the town is located is Isolated, the Explore action wouldn’t occur, because the town is no longer considered “adjacent” to the target land for the Explore action?

PW

Yes, that is correct. If you isolate a coastal land, it doesn’t count as coastal for invader actions as its not adjacent to the ocean anymore

BR
Braithwhite

Fair enough!  Let me see if I can clarify.

  1. Invaders skip all explore actions in isolated lands. So regardless of how many towns or cities are adjacent to the isolated land (or in the isolated land), there is no explore into an isolated land.

  2. Isolated lands are not adjacent. So lands next to an Isolated land would not gain explorers IF the isolated land was the only source.  In practical terms, Towns/cities inside isolated lands are not sources of invaders.

  3. Ocean creates a LOT of edge cases, but IF the Ocean is in play, you can shut down an entire coastal explore by isolating the Ocean (since the ocean is a source of invaders). It’s harder to pull off that you mmight think, since while you ARE shutting down the ocean as a source of invaders, towns/cities adjacent (or in) a given coastal land are still sources of explorers.

  4. Like a lot of token-based powers, Isolate tends to get WAY stronger when you can use it on more than one thing in a given turn. Once you can reliably isolate 2-3 lands on a given board, you start seeing a LOT more impact!

I've added enough to my pledge to get the Promo Pack set 1.  That leaves the errata pack as the only thing I'll need (though the Broken Token insert is a consideration).  Any chance we can get the errata pack along with the rest?  I understood the idea was to give it away at shipping cost anyway, but I'd happily chuck a buck into the pot to include it all in one.

So Isolate only stops the explore action, not the build and ravage steps?

yes. but it’s very useful if you can get one source on a board, then isoalte it and no explore.

We’re getting pretty deep in the weeds here on Isolate…

Just to make sure everyone’s on the same page, one thing that hasn’t been explicitly mentioned yet is that Isolate only lasts for the current turn.

And the rules are also still subject to tweaking.

To be slightly more precise, Isolated lands are not adjacent for Invaders… unless you want them to be. So if some effect would let you get a troublesome Town out of a land, you can still allow it if you want to.

Yes, but the relevant lands are still Coastal (eg, for targeting other powers).

My head is ringing a little from trying to read back and forth.  If I'm reading this correctly, the only way to get the Broken Token insert is to pledge Defender of the Island ($185) or more?  I thought I saw some comment somewhere indicating that you could add extra to a "base level" order to get the insert -- did I misread that somewhere?

Hey, can I get Eric's T-Shirt in that Designer Diary?!?

(I suppose I could get it printed myself. But it feels less official that way.)

Look towards the bottom of the Campaign page under “Available Add-ons”.  It’s available as an add-on for $39.

To be explicit, just add $39 to your pledge amount, and you’ll be able to get it.

Have they said yet when the broken token insert will be available? Is this something that wwill be available before the Kickstarter ships or not? This knowledge is slightly influential to my decision of getting the insert now or later.

Cause strife… “We have always been at war with Eurasia”

Gather invaders to badlands… “Ahh, remember the good old days back in yonder mountains? Wonder why we ever left, let’s go back!”

Gather explorers to lands with buildings… “Ahh, remember the good old days back in town? We thought the grass would be greener over here, but, well… let’s go home.”

Downgrade cities to settlements… “Huh. Guess nobody remembered it was time to repair the roofs.”

Isolate lands… “What do you mean ‘How do you get to Atlantis?’? It’s just a myth, there’s no such place.”

Convert invaders to dahan… “We’ve always respected the land.”

This was always something that bugged me about the dahan in this game. after each turn, time passes, but we are ment to believe the dahan do not have babies like the invaders?  There are a lot of games that I play that I just wish the dahan were a bigger presence on the board instead of just there to be there.

Quick question: the kickstarter says that the estimate arrival date is May 2020 -- the only reason I'm not backing the kickstarter is because I'm thinking that I can get it faster with some other method.

So will I really have to wait a year and half to get my hands on this? And if so, will I have some way of knowing that the kickstarter will be the soonest I can have it?

For The Jagged Earth, yes the Kickstarter delivery (whether ahead of or behind the estimated date) will be the soonest it can arrive. There's a significant quantity of new art to have commissioned, iterated, and finalized -- I think my estimate someplace else was in the vicinity of 100-120 new pieces, or roughly the equivalent of a non-Core Magic set if I've tracked numbers properly. That take time, even while the playtesters will be working on iterating the mechanical parts of the game up until the deadline to get things to the printers. And it looks like they're on track for a first print run in the vicinity of 10k copies, which will take a not-insignificant amount of time (including the fact that I therefore suspect they'll have to re-cast the molds for the Invader pieces at least one more time before the expansion finishes printing). That print run estimate is based on the current number of backers and the guideline of printing about 2x what gets ordered via KS, with economies of scale kicking in a 1000, 2500, 5000, and 10k.

Does that help you decide?

When the Kickstarter ships, see the KS update.

EDIT: Oops, the answer I was looking for isn’t actually there. They explained in comments somewhere that Broken Token wants to be sure that their insert fits the actually released content, so won’t be finalising it until they get sent the final production proofs. So, not available until the actual KS release.

This is something that the Event deck from Branch & Claw really helps with: it gives a natural (and realistically random) growth of the Dahan. Also bear in mind that the Invaders are growing by immigration, not by population growth: each turn is meant to be 2-3 years, I believe, not long enough for population growth to be that large.

I’m also looking forward to a future Dahan-centric expansion, which Eric has said he wants to do.

I had the same idea and already made a PnP for Many Minds Move as One yesterday.  I haven’t had time to clean up the board though.

Here’s the board: https://docdro.id/YX4pJls

Here’s the cards: https://docdro.id/tQLLuLn

I assume this is fine to post as well.  It’s from the YouTube previews.

Anything that has entered the public eye is fine to recreate. So basically anything that is now circulating youtube via the reviewers, on the kickstarter, or that we’ve released at a convention (like Trickster and Plague). If you played a game with a tester at a FLGS (or something similar), and got to try something that we haven’t posted yet, I’d prefer that you not recreate it.

These look great – how did you get the typefaces so cleaned up?  I had to use substitute fonts for mine.   One note, though – on your cards, it looks like you left out “Guide the Way on Feathered Wings”; there’s a duplicate “Pursue With Scratches, Pecks and Stings” in its place.

For Many Minds Move As One, the starting position is just one presence on your starting board in a land that has a Beast.

Was able to find that, just can't locate the Finder of Paths Unseen starting placement.

Yes, it helps me decide. Of course I’m going to back the kickstarter.

I’ll be a little sad that I will have to wait so long to get it but oh well. It makes me a bit more enthusiastic to proxy things that I see. I just have playtesting experience for other games and artwork hasn’t taken that long (though it’s about a third of what you’re asking for and it goes out to many different artists).

its going out to many different artists as well. If I recall correctly, I want to say the hold up on the last kickstarter for spirit island was mainly the art as well and people not making deadlines. Hopefully they got it down much better now, or they just make Adam work harder.

There are roughtly a dozen artists credited in the core rulebook, not counting any in-house graphic design contributions from (e.g.) Jen or Rae. I also recall there being more iterations on prototyping the invader miniatures that originally anticipated.

As for playtesting experience, Braithwhite (the new playtest manager) has said - I think elsewhere in this thread - that he’ll be putting out a general call for playtesters early next week.

I have had little time to playtest this expansion, but i do remember a game where i tried Fractured Days Split the Sky. I like how the theme of the spirit translated in mechanics. Although i must admit the cards felt powerful but harder to use than most spirits. You guys should have a treat when this one is revealed.

Morph147,

I've posted new "cleaned-up" print-and-play versions of all of the new spirits, and to keep this thread a little cleaner, have put links to all of them in a new thread:

https://greaterthangames.com/forum/topic/print-and-play-new-spirits-jagged-earthkickstartergencon-13414

They're now all PDFs posted on DocDroid, so I've taken down the Google Drive folder where the old versions were hosted.

Note:  The Google Drive link I posted above will no longer work.  I made “cleaned-up” and updated PDF versions of all of the new spirits (Vengeance-Plague, Grinning Trickster, Finder, and Many Minds), and posted them on DocDroid.  The links are all in a new thread:  https://greaterthangames.com/forum/topic/print-and-play-new-spirits-jagged-earthkickstartergencon-13414

Thematically, it grabs bunches of little flies, insects and birds from all over the island and puts them in great big swarms/flocks which bite and sting the invaders, preventing them from getting anything done.  Think of Hitchcock’s “The Birds,” just set in the 17th century.

Game-play wise, it creates lots of Beasts (faster/more numerous than Sharp Fangs) and can gather/push them (thanks to the special rule, as well as its innates and unique power cards) all over the island.  Whereever it has a swarm of beasts (and its sacred sites also count as Beasts thanks to another special rule), it causes fear/defends (Beset and Confound the Invaders), and can use its 0 (!) cost Unique Power card (Dreadful Tide of Scurrying Flesh) to make the Invaders skip actions.  Its power cards also give it even more abilities to gather/push beasts, create beasts (Ever-Multiplying Swarm allows it to double (!) the amount of beasts on a land) and allow it to use beasts to push Invaders around.

Imagine this:  You get up enough card plays (and with this spirit, that’s not particularly difficult) to use your innates at their highest level.  You use your third growth option to add a presence and a beast up to 3 lands away from where you already are, AND gather up to 3 beasts in a land up to 2 away from there.  In Fast phase, you then use the first two levels of Teeming Host Arrives to Gather up to 4 of those beasts 2 more lands distant (thanks to Fly Fast as Thought) then use the third level to push those beasts 2 more lands distant (again, thank you Fly Fast as Thought).  Conceivably, you’ve now brought a swarm of 4 (and maybe more) beasts up to 6 lands away from where they started.  Still in Fast phase, you now use your other innate, Beset and Confound the Invaders, to cause up to 5 Fear and Defend up to 10 in the new land, or play Dreadful Tide of Scurrying Flesh to remove one just a single Beast tokens (who cares, because you have 4 or more of them there!) to skip a Ravage or Build entirely.  Then in Slow Phase, you play Ever-Multiplying Swarm and make 3 more Beasts in that new land to replace any you lost, then play Connect the Hive Mind and turn one of those Beasts into your Presence, or add still one more Beast.

…and that’s all with just the base cards.  Many Minds can take a land that formerly had no Beasts, and get 3+ Beasts there with no problem.  Combine this with (ex:) Tigers Hunting, and do 1 damage per Beast in the land.  Or Pent-Up Calamity and do 3 damage for every Beast token you remove.  Or Insatiable Hunger of the Swarm and do 1 Fear/2 Damage per Beast.  Or for complete overkill, turn your swarms of insects and birds into giant Sea Monsters, and do 2 Fear and 3 Damage for every Beast.  Or tag team him with Sharp Fangs and really step back.  Imagine what Sharp Fangs could do with an ally who can suddenly stick 3+ beasts in a land, or bring beasts across the board in the blink of an eye?   And remember, whereever the Beasts go, Sharp Fangs’ presence goes with them – Many Minds becomes essentially Mr. Scott in the Transporter room, beaming Sharp Fangs’ presence all over the map.

I think somebody else said it either in this forum or on BoardGameGeek:  Sharp Fangs primarily uses Beasts offensively; think of relatively small numbers of large predatory beasts (like a wolf pack or lone roaming tigers) killing Invaders (particularly Explorers) and causing fear.  Many Minds primarily uses Beasts defensively –  it uses of lots of little beasts to confuse/distract/scare the Invaders; with the right minor/major powers, it make those little beasts absolute killers.

I’m glad Fractured days was more revealed so i can finally say how the time token mechanic is awesome for the feeling of a spirit that taps the speed of its past and the power of its future. That said he felt like a handful so i nicknamed him Fractured Thoughts Split my Head but so awesome when you pull great combos.
