We still haven't figured out Sentai Idealist yet, but that's fine. Time to (also) work on Writhe!

Well the good news is someone (that is NOT me) has already unlocked the guy and he even posted a log.  https://pastebin.com/SRVMM1VV

It was not sufficient to simply win a game with the Adamant Sentinels and Writhe dealing lots of infernal damage. I put two Twist the Ethers on him, set them to infernal++, and let him get the finishing blow against Apostate.

Also not suffiicent do end the game with the shadow cloak in the trash. I used the same setup as the posted unlock, but was not successful.

Might be equipment related? Absolute Zero has only a tentative story link to Writhe and Benchmark basically nothing, but both are quite equipment heavy.

On steam, someone else posted a log of getting an unlock, and it looks like the cloak does not need to hit the trash. Still looking at the two to see what else they have in common. Kind of hoping the kismet thing is a coincidence. She is not on my list of favorite villains to fight.

Here’s the link. https://pastebin.com/SRVMM1VV

Played a game with the same line-up as whoever won the game posted by Missingno. VG Writhe dealt the final blow and had all his equipments in play. No unlock.

Holy crap. I unlocked it. I wasn't even trying. As a result, I have no idea what I did. I was on my IPad and I don't have a log.

I was fighting Citizen Dawn in Megalopolis. Heroes were Super Scientific Tachyon, Visionary, Redeemer Fanatic, Void Guard Writhe, and Void Guard Mainstay.

Mainstay made the final killing blow. Final HP were in the twenties for everyone but Writhe, who was at 11. Visionary fed him cards at least once, but otherwise none of the other heroes helped him. The shadow cloak went in and out of the trash regularly. I used the Umbral Siphon until the Devastating Aurora destroyed it. Writhe occasionally discarded cards to eliminate damage.

I played the following cards, but no idea what order:

Grasping Shadowcloth, Distorted Perception, Nowhere to Hide. Penultimate Penumbra, Umbral Siphon, Unnerving Target.

I know I didn't play the following cards:

Erratic Form, Lies of the Shadows, Swallowed by Shadow, Unquiet Night.

My memory of the other cards is fuzzy. I threw Cloak Projector and the Dark Lab in the trash at various times without using them. But I honestly wasn't paying attention closely--I was playing over breakfast and getting ready to leave the house.

I have no idea what's helpful in here. Hopefully something.

Well, at least we know this one's doable without trying, over the course of a normal game. The common thread between the logs is likely, if the last several unlocks are anything to go by, extremely annoying to piece together even with them side-by-side. Or at least, something so outside-the-box that no one's gonna think to look for it specifically.

Still, this is exciting. The Void Guard are the first unlocks to launch after I started playing, so I can join in (or at least follow along) for the ride this time! When I get home from work tonight, I'm gonna take a good, close look at all these Steam logs coming through, and try to piece together every inane, mundane common thread between them. And of course, I'll play several Writhe games on my own, since that seems to be an important part of it.

Could it have something to do with a certain ammount of equipments being played durring a game? Most every deck in that first log had equipment to play. Or perhapse an overall ammount of damage being reduced?

In sum, so far we have unlocks on a:

  • Win over Kismet in the Tomb of Anubis with S&D Benchmark, FF AZ, Writhe, and the base Sentinels.
  • Win over Citizen Dawn in Megalopolis with SS Tachyon, base Visionary, Redeemer Fanatic, base Writhe, and base Mainstay.
  • Loss to the Chairman in Magmaria with Writhe, Idealist, S&D Benchmark, Rogue Agent K.N.Y.F.E., and Fugue State Parse.

Seems likely that villain and environment (and win/loss) don't matter.

I wonder about heroes; the only commonality, maybe, that I can see is that all three games had Writhe with at least one other Sentinel/VG hero, either as another VG character or the base Sentinels.

I agree with Phantom5613 that Equipment played might factor in. Looking forward to FallenPrime826 running the logs.

First try. Writhe, Fugue State Parse, Freedom Five Absolute Zero (I forget his proper name), Tempest, and Grandpa Legacy against Skinwalker Gloomweaver in Pike, because I felt like a nice horror set-up. I managed to get four of Writhe’s equipment cards out, and destroyed the Shadow Cloak once; but the only other equipment cards to get into play were “Isothermic Transducer,” “Null-Point Calibration Suit,” and “Elemental Subwave Inducer,” in case getting equipment cards out is any part of it.

Oh I’m not truest bummed. I hope I didn’t  come off that way. Just love seeing how some people got it by accident. I’m basically selecting Void Fuard Writhe than pressing random. I even won one against Wager Master First turn and no unlock, so at least we know it must be “do something” in the least

I just got the unlock myself. Legacy, Writhe, and Unity vs Baron Blade at The Block. My main focus was never using the Prevent Damage feature of the cloak along with destroying it multiple times. For good measure, I also had Writhe deal the killing blow.

Also, I believe I used at least 3 of his powers, and did over 10 infernal damage in one use of his power that doesn't let the target heal. (Legacy buffs + Unity's One Shot that gives +2 damage on a power.)

Sorry, was on iPhone, so no log.

I unlocked it in a losing game. I was playing against Omnitron base villain, in Omnitron IV environment.

Heroes: Omnitron-X, VG Doctor Medico, VG Idealist, VG Mainstay, VG Writhe.

We destroyed Omnitron itself, but drones were left in play, and were immune to Melee due to Conveyor Belts. There was one stupid repair drone in play when the environment killed Writhe. I lost the game and was surprised at the unlock.

Sadly, I don't have logs and wasn't keeping close track of the match -- I didn't even know the unlock was available!

Alright, I've got NINE success logs from here and Steam up in another window, and my Letters Page backlog playing in the background so as to preserve my sanity. This is gonna be a slog, but I'm determined to figure out the magic thing that unifies these runs. Once I figure that out, I'll double back through some failures and see A. whether any of the things I determined to be common factors WERE NOT present, and B. whether they ALL were but it somehow still failed.

Wish me luck. I'll need it.

I've scoured the nine logs, and it took me longer than I'd have liked. COMMON THREADS

  • Writhe as a hero in the game is absolutely a necessary component.
  • At least three unique Equipment cards are played by Writhe, possibly requiring The Shadow Cloak to be among them.
  • The Shadow Cloak is in play more often than it's in Writhe's trash. Presence in the deck may or may not be relevant.

Hey friends, I'm new to the game but fell in love with my main boy Writhe. I wanted to be one of the first people to unlock his variant. Lo and behold, I did, in the first game that I was trying for it.
I specifically waited until I had played three equipment cards as noted might be relevent above.

Setup was Legacy, Ra, Writhe vs. Ambuscade in the Block (my standard for variants that don't need Villain/Environment reqs).

Here's the log: pastebin.com/Snhfcb5h

I think that his Cosmic Inventor title, along with his Multiverse Bio being about how he was never seen as a gifted inventor means that Writhe must have a certain amount of equipment out. He may also need to be with teammates using equipment. Maybe he needs to "prove" how much better his equipment is than anyone elses?

Of note is the fact that I had both Legacy Ring and Staff of Ra out (I also destroyed them with Penultimate Penumbra).

Multiverse Bio:
Eugene Wilkenson was never a brilliant inventor. HIghly capable? Certainly. Imaginative? Without a doubt. But hardly brilliant. His stroke of luck with the shadow-tech invention was initially dampened by the lack of a buyer and later the discovery that it permanently bonded to whatever it was applied to: namely, Eugene Wilkenson. However, the change from the Southwest Sentinels to Void Guard was not merely a change in name.

The bearer of the smallest oblivion shard, Writhe wears his shard at the front of his cerebral cortex. The shard does augment his malleable form and shadow-tech, but it also fuels his inventor's imagination! His creations are stronger than ever, powered by clever design, shadow-tech, and shard power. One might even go so far as to call his gadgets "brilliant"...

Other facts I don't think are relevent but might be:
Writhe never took damage
Writhe discarded multiple cards with the Shadow Cloak to avoid damage
Writhe started with Shadow Cloak in hand which was his first play
Thus Shadow Cloak was never in the Trash
It was also never in his Deck
He never used his Innate Power, since Shadow Cloak was never in his Deck or his Trash

Can't be that as someone got it after they played a game with Naturalist, who doesn't have any Equipment cards in his deck.

Maybe: At least 5 equipment cards must have been played over the course of the game, the majority of them must be Writhe's?

Ok just got it.

My theory was to use both Somber tinker and Dark Lab to play equipment cards as much as possible.

I used regular visionary's power to peek at the top 2 cards of writhe's deck if there was an equipment there I would rewind and put them back. If not I would draw them. I would then use Dark Lab to put the equipment on the bottom of the deck and destroy it to play the bottom card. I would then use Somber Tinker to retrieve the dark lab and repeat.

My guess is: Use Somber Tinker and Dark Lab to play at least 3 of writhe's equipment cards.

PS - Akash in Freedom Tower vs Visionary, VG Writhe, TLT, and Wraith. In that order and I won.

Very Interesting! I wonder if it is as simple as This:

VG Writhe must use Umbral Siphon to prevent a target from regaining HP during a game.

Dark Lab may or may not have to be played and there may be an amount of HP, but based on my game and seeing yours it is a workable theory. I need to check the other logs.

Edit: Negative on this theory. LOG #4 above disproves it.

I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think ambuscade tried to heal during my game. I did not use somber tinkerer or dark lab in my game. I used base power first turn and anti healer the rest of the game. Played anti healer first turn. Played the ongoing with the target deals self damage one damage to writhe. Ra played flesh of the sun god and used that power every round except the last where he used the base power. Legacy played his ring and ra his staff. No equipment was destroyed in my game. So equipment doesn’t need to be destroyed.  I think it probably has something to do with equipment and having the shadow cloak out most of the time is either a direct or indirect requirement. Before this I played a lot of games where I destroyed the cloak a lot and didn’t get unlocks

It seems the rest of the results coming in are corroborating the findings I gathered from comparing the logs. It may be something like:

Finish a game in which Void Guard Writhe plays three or more Equipment cards. The Shadow Cloak must spend more full turns in play than in the trash.

I'll be playing my own game later today (I only have it on Android and can't post logs) with those parameters in mind, and I'll be paying attention to pretty much everything that happens in it.

Tried and failed. Action Hero Stuntman, Team Leader Tachyon, Writhe, Idealist and Omni-X against Trickster Kismet at Mobile Defense Platform. I got a bit overzealous and wrecked her before I got a whole bunch of Equipments, and Writhe himself only played two different ones. Shadow Cloak never left play. Omnitron got a good couple out, though.

I feel like I was on the right track, but it may matter how many Equipments the OTHER heroes play. I may double back and calculate that, if I feel sufficiently masochistic.

I used all 4(?) equipment cards for Writhe, making sure to destroy and resummon Shadow Cloak to defend and reirect damage from both Writhe himself and other heroes. I also used his lab, destroying it as well.

I also had Caspit's Playground out tho, so that may have falsly increased the ammounts of 'equipment' I had out over all.

Another failure. F5 Legacy, TLT, S&D Benchmark, Writhe and Fugue State Parse beat Voss at Magmaria. Shadow Cloak almost never saw the trash, Writhe had four of his own Equipments in play, and the other heroes (ESPECIALLY Benchmark, hot damn) collectively had a solid Equipment pool.

Caspit's Playground seems to be a big winner for people. I may make my next pass at Freedom Tower.

I wonder if this is a Termi-Nation Unity deal, where the more heroes you have the more equipment you need to bring out.

Success! I played Legacy, Writhe, Idealist vs Chairman at Zhu Long, and won. Idealist got the last hit in, with Bored Now, and I was disappointed to not get hers, but I got Writhe's.

Played every equipment multiple times, and used all of their powers but Cloak Projector.

I think it might be H based; play H times 2 equipment cards, or maybe have H out at game end?

It seems to be more than just play a bunch of equipment or have a bunch of equipment out at end of game, unless than number is really high.  I just ended a game with each of three heroes having 3+ equipment out and playing much more than that over the course of the game.  ended with 13 total equipments in play.  I don't think that's the highest number I've ended a game with, though.  I think the log I posted earlier had more.

Here's another one that blows the previous one out of the water both in terms of equipment played and equipment in play at end of game, well past any plausible goal number for either of those values.  There's definitely more to it. I wasn't counting precisely, but I think I was at 30+ total equipment in play at end of game, and many more played over the course of the game. (FF Wraith, S&D Benchmark, Omni-X, Extremist SS, Writhe vs. Ambuscade @ Freedom Tower).

Got a double unlock. No log but could it be as simple as ...

In a game with Writhe use each of his powers and more equipment must enter play than is destroyed.

Writhe,Idealist,Benchmark,Wraith, and Tempest vs Ambuscade in Freedom Tower.

My game had Benchmark, Wraith, and Writhe which is a lot of equipment I didn't destroy any of it except the shadow cloak a few times. Also caspitts playground from FT added more to the counter for every ongoing counting as a equipment.

Okay, got my unlock.  I played a total of 15 equipment and destroyed 7, so it's possible the unlock is

In a game with Void Guard Writhe, play at least twice as many equipment cards as you destroy.

I have not dug through the previous logs to see if that holds up. (ugh, searching for equipment in logs is hard...)

It's possible there's a minimum, like say

In a game with Void Guard Writhe, play at least 10 equipment cards, and at least twice as many equipment cards as you destroy.

I don’t think that’s necessarily it. One of the logged unlock games I rummaged through ended on a gigantic Equipment purge to fuel a Singularity play. The same game also featured Expatriette and Sky-Scraper, who go through Ammo and Links like tissue paper as a primary function.

Failed it again using FF Wraith, TL Tachyon and Writhe at Freedom Tower vs Ambascade...

Caspits playground was in play and I had an awful lot of equipment in play at the end, with minimal equipment destruction (Shadow Cloak a couple of times). Used several of Writhe’s powers and at least a couple of them more than I used his base power...

Really not sure what I’m doing wrong at this point...

I mean, fair; the main thing is I don’t think it would be any variation on “play more equipment than is destroyed” because that just adds up to “have some equipment in play at the end of the game”.  That Singularity game (log #8) is really a monkey-wrench though, to any theory about keeping equipment out of the trash or not destroying too much.

Another fail. Expatriette, Writhe and Omnitron-X vs. Ambuscade at Temple of Zhu Long. Lost the fight, but there was a LOT of Equipment play across the board. My hail-mary was wiping Writhe's stuff with Penultimate Penumbra, which set off a chain reaction that popped Sonic Mine and incapped him.

Seriously, should I do the log thing again? Look for other common threads, something more obtuse? Because at this point I have no idea what else we're missing. It has to be something really out-there if so many people just accidentally get it, so many can't engineer it, and no one's ideas seem to line up other than "it's probably Equipment stuff."

Welp. I'll try again tomorrow, then. It'll be a longer time until I can get it wrapped, given how many logs we've got now and how often people keep getting it. Can we get a list going of what needs tracking? Right now, based on the discussion since my first go, I'm already thinking:

  • EVERYONE'S Equipment plays, not just Writhe's
  • Play/destruction ratio of Equipments
  • Number of Equipments played per turn by Writhe
  • Number of cards drawn/discarded by Writhe throughout the game

Anything else? Because we need to get even further outside the box. We need to move miles and countries away from the box. We need to nuke the box from orbit.

Hmm, what about...

  • Number of Times Writhe was aided by another hero (anything counts here)
  • How many nonhero targets/cards Writhe destroys
  • Order of characters knocked out
  • Where Writhe stands in terms of HP at the end of the fight
I feel the last one has the most chance of being a thing considering that this has unlocked at the end of a losing game.

Okay, managed to get it this time using Benchmark, Writhe and Freedom Five Legacy vs Ambascade at Freedom Tower. Caspits Playground, Mission Control and Benchmark meant I had an awful lot of equipment at the end of the game. Writhe was at 14 health. Writhe got a few card plays from Legacy, and Legacy used Lead from the front to protect him a few times. He also took damage with and without the Shadow cloak and discarded to prevent damage.

Writhe took out maybe 3 devices over the game?

Everyone seems so focused on equipment, and I'm still not convinced that's got much, if anything to do with it.  If you're still looking for criteria to check, I would consider prevention/redirection of damage. I know you checked damage reduction the first time, but I wonder what it would look like if you counted all situations where a hero was the original target of damage, but took none due to either prevention, redirection or reduction to/below 0.

Alright, I've got a preliminary list of things to look for in my search, based on both the previous pass and the suggestions I've gotten so far. For real, though, keep 'em coming, because I really want the nail put in this coffin due to how much this seems to be crumbling. Seriously, this is the total inverse of Super Sentai Idealist: she took a long time to start unlocking and we found the trigger and common hooks really fast after, but Writhe was almost immediate and it's somehow becoming less clear how it's happening.

3. Writhe must take at least 2(H)+1 damage

I’m not so sure about the last one, given several of the logs I’ve looked through have had him taking significantly less than 2H-1 damage, including one where I’m not even 100% certain he was ever TARGETED. I’m still combing through them again, so we’ll see.

Actually, on that note… sorry it’s been so slow, guys. Between work, friend obligations, family birthdays, and the sheer daunting nature of the task, it’s gonna take a while just to go back through the original nine. This does give me new hypotheses to look for, though…

Yeah…I played two more games using the same setup we used when my friend unlocked him using the parameters we outlined, but I got no unlock despite meeting all three conditions.

Perhaps all the other numbers are irrelevant and the key is using non-equipment powers as little as possible. In Iandzirishinahah’s log the only powers he ever used were cloak projector and umbral siphon. In my friend’s game he only used Writhe’s power once, equipment powers all other turns. In my games the only thing that stands out really different was I used Writhe’s power 2-3x each game and took more total damage. In the log you provided Writhe used his power twice.

Unlock happened when Idealist delivered final blow. Writhe was lowest health with two equipment cards out. Whole team was above 15 health with Writhe redirecting and tanking damage the whole game. At some point he prevented damage from each character on the field. Shadow Cloak was destroyed and retreived numerous times. I believe he also had shadow cloak out every turn for at least a short time, though it ended up destroyed at the end of his turn several times.

Not sure if this helps.

No Shadow Cloak at that instance. Had 2 Siphons, and several equipments coming and going at that game.

What are we missing? We managed to hone in on what Idealist generally needs after a week, we (or at least you guys, I haven't participated yet) got Medico at least half-pegged almost immediately, but with Writhe we had a solid hunch and have now completely lost the narrative. I have no idea what is or isn't being done differently between successes and failures, there seems to be an unlock that contradicts every attempt to close in on it, and it doesn't feel like we're making any headway.

Does anyone else want to try the log thing? I can't anymore, it's burning me out and making this not fun.

Ok, I have a theory, but no way to really test it.  So for a lot of unlocks there will be a thing in the registry saying step one is done.  But what if step one in this case isn't a seperate file but a previous character unlock?  That might explain why there isn't a new registry file as a prerequisite and give a reason why nothing seems to be lining up.  I haven't listened to the Sentinels Letters Page; is there a character unlock who may fit the bill?

Unlocked it. F5 Legacy, TLT, Medico, Writhe and Dark Vis vs. Skinwalker Gloomweaver at Temple of Zhu Long. Writhe played all five of his Equipments at least once, used Umbral Siphon constantly (read: almost exclusively) in order to stop Gloom from healing off kills, he did so many things out of turn that I lost count, and everyone was COMPLETELY HEALTHY by the end of the game. This continues my trend of unlocking a Void Guard variant the week of the NEXT variant's release.

Based on the MK II Shadow Projector power, I think the unlock has to be related in no small measure to card draw and damage prevention. I'm certain Writhe drew at least twice as many cards as he had actual draw phases between the Team Leader power and Bolster Allies/Fleet of Foot plays, and there was a lot of redirection away from Writhe by Lead from the Front and total prevention by Immunization and Heroic Interception. Basically, he drew a lot of cards and dodged an exorbitant amount of damage. Of course, now my question is this: was that good enough to fulfill the prereq for Medico? I don't know how to check that on Android. (EDIT: No. No it did not.)

Also, more defined but still vague facial structure on variant Writhe is so much creepier than base Writhe.

It's not just drawing cards. Won against Ambuscade in Freedom Tower with F6 Tachyon, F5 Legacy, Void Guard Writhe and Captain Cosmic with no unlock. Writhe did nothing but double skip. He did discard his hand a few times to destroy environment cards. The environment played Unnerving Target off the top of his deck, which was never triggered. So Writhe drew a tonne of cards (40+) and discarded a lot. (25+) No log since I'm on an iPhone.

I unlocked Cosmic Inventor Writhe sort of by accident.

Stuntman and the Void Guard against regular Baron Blade on the Mobile Defense Platform. Order of heroes was Stuntman, VG Dr. Medico, VG Idealist, VG Mainstay, VG Writhe.
https://pastebin.com/EfENNuiE

Shadow Cloak was put into play three times by Sink into Shadow and destroyed twice, once by Distorted Perception and once by Grasping Shadow-Cloth. Shadow Cloak was never played directly from Writhe's hand. It came into play once from Writhe's Deck and twice from Writhe's Trash.

The Shadow Cloak reduced damage taken by Writhe three times, twice reducing the damage taken to zero. Writhe never reduced damage taken by anyone else.

Writhe increased the damage he inflicted by 1 point on seven different instances - 5 times increased by the Shadow Cloak, 2 times increased by Lurking Shadows.

Portable Dark Lab was put into play once and destroyed itself after using it's power.

Umbral Siphon was put into play once by Portable Dark Lab, never destroyed and used twice. The first time it was used the Shadow Cloak increased the damage to 2 Melee and 2 Infernal, the second time it was used the combination of Shadow Cloak and Lurking Shadows increased the damage to 3 Melee and 3 Infernal.

Grasping Shadow-Cloth put into play once and the power on it used (with destroyed Shadow Cloak) to prevent Baron Blade's card draw.

Cloak Projector was put in play and the power on it used once, but Baron Blade didn't do any damage that turn to be reduced.

Writhe took damage once, reducing him from 19HP to 17HP. He ended the game at 19HP.

As for other people's equipment, VG Idealist played her Tiara early, VG Mainstay played his Durasteel-Studded Vest, and Stuntman played both his Stylish Armor and his Pistolet-Mitrailleur. VG Mainstay and VG Stuntman had equipment card types they never put into play.

So, I played one or more instances of every one of Writhe's pieces of equipment and used the power on each of his pieces of equipment that had a power at least once, as well as Writhe's own power at least once. Using a power more than once was also done, so it can't be a "use each power once and only once" thing. Could that have something to do with the unlock?

Thoughts:

unlock happened when match was over. Tachyon dealt the final blow. Only one was incapped

Writhe: only equipments that played were the one that prevented him from playing, and the one that prevented him from healing.

Didnt get a chance to prevent much damage.

I hope it’s not because that sounds so dumb, but at the same time it’s the most original off-the-wall suggestion so far and I genuinely wouldn’t put it past Handelabra to have done that. I'm pretty sure that once you've unlocked a variant the game stops checking conditions for unlock. None of the log files I've looked at had "you've unlocked" messages for variants that weren't unlocked that game.

If you unlock a variant by meeting its conditions you won’t get notice of achieving it again.   So anyone who has unlocked Void Guard variants at this point won’t get notice of the unlock again.  There are ways to reset that people have found but not something I’m going to get into as it’s not really a supported item.  If the option to just unlock a variant was there and you used that then when you actually meet the conditions later on you’ll get the notice/achievement.

Could it be having more equipment in hand than in play/trash?

Just got an accidental unlock using Dark Visionary, F6 Wraith, and Writhe vs. Voss in Megalopolis. I've only been skimming this thread, but in case any of the following are helpful:

  • Cloak Projector was never in play. Every other equipment was played and used at least once.
  • Writhe's base power was never used.
  • The Shadow Cloak was destroyed once, and a turn never ended without it in play. I brought it out with Sciamachy turn one, and destroyed it on a later turn by playing Grasping Shadow-Cloth via Sciamachy, which brought it back immediately. I used Concealed Assailant to deal the finishing blow to Voss, which would have destroyed The Shadow Cloak a second time had the game not ended first.
  • Between Decoy Projection, Smoke Bombs, and Stun Bolt, there was a lot of damage redirection and reduction going on.
  • There was a lot of equipment in play thanks to Wraith and Writhe. I don't think Writhe had any equipment in hand at the end of the game.

OK, so "Writhe plays each unique equipment" is crossed off as a possibility.

I looked over my unlock log and it looks like Writhe ended each of his turns with the Shadow Cloak in play for my game as well, that might be the significant thing.

I finally got the unlock. It actually took me several games, so if it's some kind of cumulative total, I'm doing something weird.

This particular game was of note because of how much was in my trash, thanks to an opening board of Citizens Sweat, Tears, Truth, and Anvil (which I almost just restarted upon seeing). And of course Tears got resurrected. So there was more in my trash than in my deck or hand.

Here's another data point on this.  I just unlocked Writhe, generating the following game log:

https://pastebin.com/S8MT82pR

As a quick overview, I played all the Void Guard Sentinels and the Sentinels deck against La Capitan.  Won, with (Void Guard) Writhe dealing the final blow.  I used powers/options that sent the Shadow Cloak into the trash several times, often pulling it right back out.  Still don't know exactly what unlocked it, of course, but it looks kind of awesome.

Just a quick summary of the comments made by MigrantP about the unlock:

Does the unlock condition contain any sequences of events that must occur in a particular order relative to one another? Yes

Does the unlock condition contain a value that is a function of (H)? No

Does the unlock condition contain the word "Equipment"? Yes

Does the unlock condition contain the word "damage"? No

Does the unlock condition contain the phrase "The Shadow Cloak"? No

The first response is interesting.  Has a registry key been identified for Writhe?  If not, then this would hint that there is a sequence of things that must occur within the same fight, right?

Well, I just unlocked him, no idea how.  I played the four Void Guard heroes against The Dreamer and lost.  I'd post my log, but I'm on a Mac and various people in the Discord tried to help me find my log a while back and it wasn't where it's supposed to be, so . . . I don't know how to do that. I wasn't specifically trying to find the unlock, so I didn't really pay attention the the sequence of events.  Wish I could be more helpful.

Bad news: When I lost, I hit "try again" or whatever the thing is that starts the game over, and even though I didn't actually start the new game, it looks like that was enough to delete the previous game's record.  Well, I tried.

I wasn't even going for the unlock, just trying out the Void Guard heroes after not playing SOTM for a while. Since order and equipment matter I can say that I played Shadow Cloak using Writhes power, umbral siphoning during my play phase (used that power a few times), and used somber tinker to play Portable Dark Lab but never used the power.

Well, I finally unlocked him by playing this week's one-shot. Have a copy-paste from Steam:

https://pastebin.com/GQe5FeXu

> I could not even tell you what I did. Writhe had two cards out all game, tops, including the Shadow Cloak. He used Umbral Siphon a couple times before I spent the last few rounds of the game just having him double-skip because he was low on cards. Everyone else just did their usual thing, I played no one in any particular way.

I used Umbral Siphon a bunch of times, including on the very first turn.

I used Sink into Shadow exactly once.

I had four equipment and an ongoing in play at once, but I never played a Cloak Projector.

I've never been into the unlocking but I accidentally did it today and saw that there was no asnwer for him yet so I thought I'd help add data for others.

I had Omnitron X, Expatriatte, Writhe, Nightmist, and Bunker against Gloomweaver.  I defetaed Gloomweaver with Writhe by using the Cloak Projector and destroying the Shadow Cloak.  I had plenty of equipment out as you can imagine with this cast of heroes.  I was fighting in the Realm of Discord and Time Flies came out.  Using Adhesive Grenades, Bunker kept it out like that for three turns in a row so I was really flush with cards.  I don't know enough about this unlocking to tell you more that might be useful, but hopefully that will be of some help.

I  just got the unlock on Writhe accidentally myself. I did not realize the unlock was unknown, so I really don't have a lot of detail about the game. However, I got the unlock in a game with Spite. Writhe was the key to my victory because Umbral Siphon prevented him from healing. When I read though the unlock factors that were listed, I saw a lot about damage prevention/reduction, but almost nothing about healing prevention. The games which showed unlocks tended to be against opponents with some reliable regeneration factor that Umbral Siphon could shut down. could it be as simple as:

Use Umbral Siphon to prevent x points of healing.

This would meet the need a certain sequence of events (damaged the target with Umbral Siphon on a turn before it attempts to heal) and involves equipment (Umbral Siphon). And a partial list of villains where the unlock was successful (Spite, Blade, Dawn, Omnitron, Kismet, Gloomweaver) all have fairly common healing mechanics.

Alrighty, just got the unlock.  Thought it might have something to do with total equipment played during the game, so I went in against Abulscade in Freedom Tower with TL Tachyon, Wraith, Bunker, Omnitron X, and Writhe.  Tachyon was there as a card engine, everyone else was there because they had tons of equipment.   Tachyon had her goggles in play, Wraith had pouches, knives, stun bolts, targeting computer, and razor ordinance, Omnitron had 2 gaussian blasters and had played 2 armors, Bunker had flak cannon, grenade launcher, maintence unit, Omnicannon, and had played an aux power source, and Writhe had the cloak, cloak projector, umbral syphon, and portable lab.

Intentionally went as fast as I could and took him down on round 5.

So I ended up with 16 equipment in play at the end of the match.  19 had been played, but 3 (one armor, one aux power source, and the shadow cloak) were destroyed during play.

Outside of Taychon, none of the heroes had played all possible equipment in their deck.

We know it doesn't have anything to do with damage and winning isn't required.  Maybe it's something as simple as 'complete a game with void guard writhe where 10 unique equipments have been played'?   If unique equipments is the requirement, 10 is the maximum it could be as there are recorded unlocks on the sentinels/plague rat 1 shot a while back, and between all 7 sets in that one shot there are 10 equipment total.

Anyway, this would explain why the unlock just seems to happen sometimes; if you’re not playing a heavy equipment based squad it’d be impossible, and if you are it’d just happen naturally.

Log for reference.

Ok, that last idea actualy doesn't work.  The achievement triggers at the end of the match, and anything that's as basic as 'get x in play at once' would trigger when you had done so.

Also, damage done is irrelivant, number of players is irrelivant, win/loss is irrelivant, and the shadow cloak specifically is not meaningful outside of being an equipment.

It seems to favor somewhat faster matches with lots of equipment, and requires an end of match check before handing out the award.  So... maybe it's something like 'complete a match where there were at least twice as many equipment played as game rounds'?

Really wish there was some way to test these ideas out.

Just unlocked Writhe by accident in a random game against Advanced Voss at Court of Blood.

I unlocked using CI Writhe since I had previously unlocked him with the button, so I can confirm base Writhe is not a requirement.

Of note, I didn't get the shadow cloak out until Writhe's final turn and never destroyed it or any other equipment cards. The only powers Writhe used were his base power and Umbral Siphon.

So a path to explore:  Numbers of powers used on equipment cards. I got an unlock looking to play as many equipment cards with powers on them and use them as often as I could.  I used powers from ards 34 times over 14 different equipments.

https://pastebin.com/Dk5cZKxF

Might have to do with total powers used or number of powers used, but this could explain with Caspit's Playground seems to boost the odds of winning by making all ongoings into equipments.

Might as well fire out a guess: Play a game with Writhe where you use each of his equipment powers once.

I definitely got the unlock without using most of his equipment, let alone equipment powers.  I think I used exclusively his dagger, since this was back when we thought the cloak couldn't be destroyed too many times.  I definitely never used the Cloak Projector or the Dark Lab.  I'm sad I didn't know about logs during the time I unlocked him; all I remember is that I failed with Unity / Wraith / Writhe but succeeded with Unity / Skyscaper / Writhe.  I went with Freedom Tower, but Caspit's playground never entered play either time.  So while I was trying to play as much equipment as possible, H=3 can't have put too much of it into play.

I wonder if it matters HOW the equipment comes into play?  Maybe you have to pull equipment out of the deck using powers, but not using cards?  Like, if I failed with Wraith because of Impromptu Invention, but Skyscraper's Micro-Assembler was fine?  And perhaps when people were failing it was because they used some of the Writhe one-shots that pull the cloak from the deck?

Maybe it's as simple as "In a game with VG Writhe, win a game where Writhe uses a power to pull an equipment card out of his deck three times.  A card play cannot cause an equipment card to be pulled from VG Writhe's deck or trash."

VE
Velvetisis

I've actually got a different idea based on your lineup.  Trying to piece together similarities and differences: When I got my success I played with bunker and I know I used the power on Auxiliary Power Source, destroying it.  Similarly SKy-scraper has several cards that destroy her own equipments, whereas Wraith only has Inventory Barrage, which no one ever uses.  What if:

In a game with VG Writhe 2 different heroes must destroy at least one of their own equipments.

There may also be a number of equipments played requirement.

US
Usoki
2019-02-17 11:31 UTC

Ooh, that's an interesting point.  I would have used a lot of Skyscraper's destruction / replay for her link cards, because I was assuming I had to play as many equips as possible, and she doesn't have many link cards.  On the other hand, Wraith has so many equipment cards in her deck it wouldn't have been an issue.  (And no one uses Inventory Barrage, as you point out.)  And in both rounds, Unity would have been destroying a lot of equips or else I would have never been able to deal damage.

So maybe something like "In a game with VG Writhe, win a battle during which you destroy more equipment cards than the number of unique equipment cards which enter play."
