Since Setting Sun Ra being released for unlocking means that all the currently playable hero and villain variants are now in the game, it finally feels like the right time to ask this question.

Which portraits do you like looking at the most based on whatever criteria you value most, and which opening cutscene messages do you find the most entertaining to read? (If you need a refresher on the latter, there's a comprehensive Steam guide to all of them.)

I like Freedom Five Legacy vs Baron Blade.

“Come on, you should know better by now.”

Aww, someone made one already.  I've been working on a list of all the opening dialogue that I was planning to share with everyone here as a Christmas present as soon as Setting Sun Ra was unlocked.

Off the top of my head for portraits:

I find it interesting in general that the men suffer way more clothing damage in their under-10 portraits than the ladies, culminating in Chrono-Ranger's ending up shirtless which I can't say I mind in the slightest.

Bonus points though for original Parse who as near as I can tell suffers naught but some dainty cracks in her glasses.

I really like AZ and Bunker's Termi-Nation portraits, as we rarely get to see either of their faces and they're more visible in these looks.

Freedom Five Tachyon is wicked awesome. Her entire facial expression and pose just exudes attitude and "I'm the badass in town and don't you forget it".

Freedom Five Wraith's incap gets points for how melodramatic it is, stylishly hiding her face.

Visionary Unleashed's incap is so pretty and serene looking.

Dark Conductor Argent Adept's under-10 portrait is one of the downright freakiest things in the game and I love it.

As for cutscene messages:

Freedom Six Bunker and Fright Train's nemesis messages are utterly hilarious; basically them going "WTF?" "WTF?" at each other with train puns (and is basically 100% of the reason I hope we get special messages for the OblivAeon heroes and their normal selves).

Prime Wardens Argent Adept and Akash'Bhuta is pretty much a mutual Badass Awesome Boast deal.

Just about every single Captain Cosmic and Infinitor message makes me weepy-eyed for how sweet they are. XTREME Cosmic and Infinitor in particular is surprisingly sweet considering the source.

XTREME Cosmic's normal message, on the other hand, is just downright hilarious.

Finally, Freedom Five AZ and Team Miss Info is also really sweet for AZ calling the F5 his family.

I mostly recall the first time I saw it which was on the Handelabra live stream and he had his line against the Dreamer.

I like how Fanatic is already pretty "extreme", so her XTREME version's quotes are basically just normal for her.

I also have questions about Miss Information's evil bakery.

Whenever Sky-Scraper talks about her friend persons, my heart melts a little more. Portja is just... she's so adorable.

Dark Conductor Argent Adept's sub-10 HP portrait is the most memorable of the Fall of the Variants stuff for sure.

I enjoyed F5 Tachyon vs. Iron Legacy as a nemesis quote, and also enjoyed Friction's quote vs. F5 Tachyon.

F5 Legacy's quote vs. Baron Blade from this week's one-shot was pretty funny.

Bunker's lines aren't super interesting, but I did enjoy F5 Bunker vs. Fright Train for him calling FT out on his one-track mind.

Also, I just played a game with F5 Tachyon and stopped to look at her end of game portrait. I love the arched eyebrow and skeptical look, as if to say, "really? You're taking me on?"

There’s something kind of tragic about the single tear on Iron Legacy’s face on the Victory vs him screen.

That's the portrait of a man who has lost everything.

One of my all-time favorite pieces of art from Sentinels.

Iron Legacy's storyline in Sentinels is arguably the most tragic one in the whole thing. I wonder if we'll ever get a podcast detailing the entire event, since it seems like pretty much literally everyone who's not Ambuscade ends up being thoroughly miserable (or dead, or miserable and then dead).

Deadline's victory screen is also a picture of a being who's not in the slightest happy with the end results.

Both of Gloomweaver's victory screens are freakily awesome.

La Captain's victory screen is nicely classy.
