Continuity problem with Fanatic?

I did a little searching around, but didn't see any other topics so please forgive me if I missed something. I was bored one day so I created an exhaustive database of all the digital cards within the SotM app. The database records the instance of every character's appearance (issue wise) and what card(s) that information is drawn from. While doing this, I noticed a possible discrepancy with Fanatic. Her bio states that her first appearance is in Mystery Comics #368, but Scholar's card "Expect the Worst" contains an identified quote from Fanatic in Mystery Comics #281. How can this be? Or was this an oversight by the design team? What are your thoughts?

Just random musings by a curious fan of the game (and story).

This wouldn't be video game specific.   Since we don't have actual comics it's quite possible Fanatic was there but did not appear in the comic.

So you're saying that you interpret "First Appearance" as first visual appearance, and not necessarily first identified appearance? I suppose that could make sense.

Thanks for the welcome!

Yes.  I think Apostate has a similar issue with first appearance if you look at his and Fanatic's cards.

Visionary is also quoted in the comic directly before her first apperance.

It seems very very odd though that Fanatic is quoted in a comic nearly 100 issues before she first appeares. I'll have to take a look at the cards again because I dont remember this particular one coming up before.

Absolution 19 Apostate Apocalypse
Fanatic 25 Apostate Bio
Fanatic 25 Apostate Corrupted Effigy
Fanatic 25 Apostate Condemnation
Fanatic 27 Apostate Remorseless Provocation
Fanatic 27 Apostate Gauntlet of Perdition
Mystery Comics 367 Apostate Holy Nova
Mystery Comics 368 Apostate Tome of the Unknowable
Mystery Comics 369 Apostate Fallen Angel
Mystery Comics 370 Apostate Reactive Plating Subroutine

Yeah I think you're right. Apostate appears first in Fanatic #25 and runs through 3 issues. At the same time he appears in 4 continuous issues in Mystery Comics, and actually appears one issue before Fanatic appears. I've been trying to figure out the placement of Absolution Comics and Fanatic Comics and I'm thinking that Absolution takes place chronologically after Fanatic because earlier Fanatic Comics detail a fight with the Dreamer, and I think storywise Fanatic holes herself up in that bell tower after losing to Apostate, emerges as Redeemer Fanatic (Fanatic #30), and then beats Apostate. That'd result in a nice thematic ending because the final issue of Absolution (#19) is mentioned by Wrathful Retribution.

tldr: The chronology of Sentinels is tough to line up across all the comics.

Edit: Sorry about the poor formatting. My data table didn't transition well from Excel to post.

Any chance of sharing that database as a downloadable file or on Google Sheets? I'd love to see it.

I'd been thinking of maybe at some point trying to organize all the flavor text by "series" myself.

It is possible that her quote in Mystery Comics #281, while attributed on the card as who we know today as Fanatic, was said by Helena as a kid before her accident and before she actually became Fanatic. This would keep intact a "first apperance" 87 entire issues later.

Along the same lines, there is speculation out there that Apostate indeed has quotes attributed to him before he was actually known as Apostate. I think, in the comic world, he was an unknown mysterious player for a number of issues before he was formally introduced as Apostate. Even though quotes on cards attribute text to Apostate before his first apperance.

Also, any continuity questions would be great for the Letters Page! (if it really ever happens)

Yeah if you're interested I can try to upload it later sometime (about to start the workday). It's an autofiltered Excel file so everything is easy to locate. One click gets you every appearance for whoever you want to see, or you can pull up a numerically ordered list of any particular comic (that also shows who appeared in each issue). It's pretty neat to look at, and since it took me some 12 hours to input everything, might as well make it available for the community right?  :slightly_smiling_face:

Did you watch the name reading from the kickstarter?  They have an AV room set up, I think that is for the Letters page stuff.

I'll believe it when I see it. I've been hurt too many times before.
