I have two theories that we can try starting out:
Setback redirects X ammount of damage away from fellow heroes(since that's a theme with his DW variant),
or Setback ammasses X ammount of unlucky tokens.
I have two theories that we can try starting out:
Setback redirects X ammount of damage away from fellow heroes(since that's a theme with his DW variant),
or Setback ammasses X ammount of unlucky tokens.
I think it'll be related to Expatriette somehow, since their relationship and the Dark Watch seem to have formed around the same time, and their DW incap art each features the other.
Could be. I say try the simpler theories first, or maybe focus on redirecting damage that would be done to Expat?
I think it's a safe bet to at least have Expat on the team with Setback for the unlock.
Based on the incaps, I'd say either:
Expatriette deals lethal damage to Setback in Temple of Zhu Long, and then Setback is brought back to life
or
Setback is brought back to life in Temple of Zhu Long, and then Expatriette deals lethal damage to Setback.
Which incaps are you referring to? Neither DW Setback or Expatriette's incap have anything to do with Zhu Long
They do in the foil cards.
Setback shows a ghost dragon going through his chest, his eyes turning red, while Expat's has a red eyed Setback in her sights as he stands beside Zhu Long in his human form.
Incaps seen on the foil collection with the alt art. You can go to these links to see them http://sentinelswiki.com/index.php?title=Expatriette and http://sentinelswiki.com/index.php?title=Setback
Well, I tried the second option, specifically:
Ambuscade vs Redeemer Fanatic, DW Exp, DW Nightmist, DW Fixer, and Setback in Temple of Zhu Long
I offed Setback (final hit was from Fixer), then resurrected him using Rites, and then I had Expatriette put him down. I also (just in case) had True Form out and Chastised for like half the game (he's pictured in the DW Exp incap).
No unlock.
The full text description of DW Setback from this wiki http://sentinelswiki.com/index.php?title=Setback is:
> While things deteriorated more and more in Rook City, the heroes who regularly patrolled the failing city grew increasingly concerned about the disappearance of Mr. Fixer. Three of the those heroes joined forces: Expatriette, Setback, and Nightmist. They worked together to protect Rook City and to investigate the loss of their friend.
When Amanda told Pete that they were going to team up, he had reservations. Of course, he was excited to help, but that was exactly the problem. He knew how things go for him - he didn't want Dark Watch to have any major setbacks. Even still, you can't help if you don't try, and Pete was very good at trying. When working with Dark Watch, Setback often leads the charge. He likes getting up close and personal with his opponents and also far enough away from his allies that he can't accidentally trip them up. Though he does like to spend as much time with Amanda as possible....
The hero team known as Dark Watch has gone through a lot. They were originally formed by Expatriette, Setback, and NightMist who were seeking to uncover the truth behind the events of the death of their friend, Mister Fixer. So, it was a bit of a rough start that the first major threat to Dark Watch was a mystically revived Mister Fixer! They managed to survive and even helped him reconnect his mind and body, so Mister Fixer became the fourth member of Dark Watch, fighting alongside those who risked everything to save him.
Based on that, I'm thinking something like Setback in the lead, along with Nightmist and Exp (possibly with someone in between them), but I'm curious about how to work in the Mister Fixer thing. Part of me says he shouldn't be on the team, but another part says that we need to work in the resurrection somehow. Hmmm.
Just tried the following:
Ambuscade vs Setback, Fanatic, Expatriette, and Nightmist in Temple of Zhu Long
So, I had Setback in front, with someone in between him and Exp, Nightmist. I had Expatriette put him down, let him get rezzed, and then she put him down again, all while Zhu Long watched (Chastised) in the corner. Once she put him down the second time, I left him down, killed Zhu Long, and then won the match.
No unlock.
Yes, but those are the Dark Watch incaps, which implies to me that they happen after the Dark Watch is founded, and thus won’t be part of the unlock.
The character card has him holding up something that’s falling on him. Maybe you need to redirect damage from hallway collapse, or falling statuary?
DW expat's first incap (http://sentinelswiki.com/index.php?title=File:Darkwatchexpatrietteincap.jpg) is clearly happening on a Mobile Defense platform. Baron Blade may need to be in the game? Alternatively, since we know the Citizens take over the MDPs (one of the MDP cards that is not yet in the video game) Citizen Dawn may have to be the villian.
Also, Adept is in the background, fighting I believe Empyreon. Empyreon is not yet in the video game, so can probably ignore that.
DW Expat is also sheilding setback, so redirecting damage to her that kills her, possibly against Blade or Dawn (possibly damage that would have killed setback) may be part of the requirements.
And her Unlock for DW Expat is against Blade in Rook city - because of the MDPs, I'm guessing. So with that in mind, the above become a bit more likely.
However, both the original DW expat incap and the new foil ones have Setback in his Dark Watch uniform - indiciating they are perhaps after the event needed.
In which case, we look to Setbacks incaps. His first version has him hanging up his suit - Silver lining back into play? Some other effect? Seems to be happening in Rook City.
The new version has him juggling vials and being electricuted (Shock rounds? He is Twitchy after all) - that again looks like a MDP setup ( a shield generator, perhaps?)
I'd hazard a guess that its Setback, Expat, and Nightmist in Rook City against Blade or Dawn, redirecting damage to Expat from Setback that kills her
possibly also Setback, Expat, Nightmist against Any Villain, in Temple of Zhu (possibly the Chairman), with DW Mr Fixer already unlocked.
(remember dw fixers unlock is part of this story of the formation of the Dark Watch - and Omnitron U required Cosmic Omni to be unlocked already, so having a character already unlocked can be a requirement)
Possibly: Nightmist Expat Fixer Setback vrs The Chairman, in Temple of Zhu, Fixer must be incapped by the Operative and brought back to life. (which seems odd as it already includes the basic story of another unlockl
I'm thinking that we need to investigate Fixers death by going up against the Chairman in Rook City with expat (base), Setback, and Nightmist (base). not an easy fight.
New theory. Because fighting the chairman in rook city is a hateful endeavor with a 3 person team.
1. Fight Kismet with Setback in the lead. Cash out must be played. Setback must be incapped.
(symbolizing setback walking away and giving up the superhero life)
2. Win a game in Rook City with Expat (base), Setback, and Nightmist (base)
(Symbolizing her convincing him to put on the tights again and help them)
I can confirm that having 500 Unlucky Tokens at any given moment does NOT unlock Dark Watch Setback.
Dangit. That didn't work.
I'm sure its a two parter, though. Canonically we know:
He was a cameo hero that showed up in a bunch of stuff. He had a run of bad luck.
Setback gave up and moved to Rook City (according to Christopher, that is what one does when out of options).
Expatriette convinced him to get back in the game.
The first "official" Dark Watch Mission was to rescue Fixer from the temple.
I tried all 4 DW members, original costumes, vs the chairman in the Temple.
Killed Fixer, revived him, allowed The True Form to show up, killed him (with Setback), killed Setback with damage from friendly fire caused by Shock Rounds, Silver Lining triggered twice…
No unlock. So unless it’s REALLY specific, those are all out.
Spitballing, but maybe lose a game against any villain in any environment with Setback on the team.
Win a game in Rook City with Setback, Expat and Nightmist on the team. Maybe without destroying any of their ongoings or equipment, or redirecting a set amount of damage away from them.
Setback having 777 Unlucky Tokens does not do anything.
One thing I thought I would throw in there....it's possible that the "Fixer dies to to Chairman"-fu could just be handled by a pre-condition that you already have DW Fixer, either just unlocked or potentially on the team. I just mention this because A) fighting Chairman sucks, and B) it really does seem like having to do that as part of Setback's unlock would be kind of re-treading DW Fixer's unlock, and I don't think they'd do that.
From the wiki regarding DW Fixer
> The hero team known as Dark Watch has gone through a lot. They were originally formed by Expatriette, Setback, and NightMist who were seeking to uncover the truth behind the events of the death of their friend, Mister Fixer. So, it was a bit of a rough start that the first major threat to Dark Watch was a mystically revived Mister Fixer! They managed to survive and even helped him reconnect his mind and body, so Mister Fixer became the fourth member of Dark Watch, fighting alongside those who risked everything to save him.
What they found, however, was not exactly what they were looking for. They learned of the death of Mr. Fixer at the hand of his old pupil, The Operative, but his corpse had been sent to the fabled Temple of Zhu Long. The three heroes fought their way to that temple, only to be forced to face in combat the very subject of their search. A resurrected Mr. Fixer who knew not the faces or voices of his former allies fought them at the command of the mystical Zhu Long. In the course of the battle, NightMist managed to reconnect Mr. Fixer’s mind to his body, and the four escaped the temple together.
Now, Mr. Fixer fights as part of Dark Watch. There is much unknown about how he returned, and his body seems to be healthier and stronger than before, but he still experiences great, undying rage. He is a harsher combatant than ever before, and the other members of Dark Watch keep their eyes on Mr. Fixer, both concerned for his safety as well as their own.
So if we assume that the Operative death thing has already happened via the DW Fixer unlock, then maybe something like having Setback, Exp, Nightmist, and Fixer on the team, maybe have Fixer die and get resurrected? And then maybe after that Nightmist plays Enlightenment on him? (It's about the only helpful thing Nightmist can do to someone else, and it says she reconnected him). Obviously you'd need Temple of Zhu Long, but maybe the villain wouldn't matter? I mean, sure, you could say it has to be Chairman so Operative can kill Fixer, but again, seems like you're redoing DW Fixer at that point.
If he joined DW when expatriette recruited him, that means she sort of "joined" first. You may need to use DW expat (rather than regular expat) in the unlock.
Attempted Kismet in Rook CIty with Dark Watch (DW Expatriette, DW Mr. fixer, DW Nightmist, and Setback) No such luck.
Ugh, I hate Rook City.
Baron blade with normal expat setback nightmist and fixer in rook, setback was first, expat got incapped, won, no unlock.
I tried this but using the order from the variant site Variants — Your place for all things In the Sentinels Omniverse!.
Expat, Fixer, NM, then Setback. Won, no unlock.
I did Ambuscade vs Setback, Fixer, Expatriette, and Nightmist (all normal variant) in Zhu Long.
I had Fixer die and then get resurrected, and then Nightmist used Enlightenment on him, and he put Meditation and Harmony in play, and then we won.
No unlock.
Vs. Choke point at Insula Primalis. Setback, Greatest Legacy, fixer, Scholar, DW Expat.
Get Setback incapped via redirected damage from Wrong Place and Time. Silver lining had been triggered. Won the game. No unlock.
Ay records yet of someone unlocking him?
one way to find out on Steam is to see the global achievements, as it shows the percentage of people who own the game have it unlocked. I still think it's at 0%
though that doesn't show for non-steam users.
Card art that might help
Setback:
(only artwork that is currently in the Video Game - If it includes a character (like Revenant or the Slaughter-House Six) that is not in the VIdeo Game currently, discounted for not being possible to use in the Unlock
Cash Out - Kismet
Friendly Fire - Tempest hitting Setback
Fumbling Fool - Wraith and Kismet
Kharmic Retribution - Apostate
Looking Up - some thugs and The Chairman
Reckless Rush - Plague Rat
Surprising Fortune - Omnitron - Cosmic? Kinda looks like V from Tactics...
Turn of Events - Ra and Plague Rat
Whoops, Sorry! - Bunker
Temple of Zhu Long
Rites of Revival - From left to right Setback, Expatriette, Mr. Fixer, and Nightmist
Kismet
Viloent Trickster
Weak Heart
Wager Master
Unanswerable Question
Chairman vrs Setback, Expat, and Nightmist in the Temple of Zhu - Setback and Expat both incaped, and both raised by the Temple (with nightmist in Mistform and drawing 6 cards every environment turn because of those ones, its really easy to bring people back!) Victory (used Expats incap 1 hp target destruction to finish off the Chairman)
No unlock.
I doubt this has much to do with it, since the art already depicts Setback in Dark Watch gear, but maybe the incapacitated art on his card indicates Expatriette must fall because he does not redirect damage to himself?
Someone on steam got it by using:
DW expat, Setback, DW nightmist, DW fixer.
Vs
The Chairman in Rook City.
Heroes must win.
Fixer might have to strike the final blow on Chairman (and operative?).
Attempting to replicate now.
Spite in Rook City with Dark Watch
no unlock
Unlocked.
DW expat, setback, DW nightmist, DW fixer
vs
Chairman in Rook City.
Heroes won. Fixer incapped.
Fixer struck final blow on Operative
DW nightmist struck final blow on chairman.
Not sure if there are any other preconditions.
Oh, that's it? That seems a bit anticlimactic...
Dark Watch defeated the Chairman at Rook City. No unlock. The following things were different than Braithwhite's game:
1. Did not use DW variants
2. Setback was only hero incaped.
3. Fixer dealt the final blow to both Chairman and Operative.
Failed to unlock.
It may be because I added Team Leader Tachyon in the mix. I also used Setback, and DW Fixer/Nightmist/Expat.
But Fixer did deal final blow to Operative, and Fixer was incapped. Expat dealt final blow to Chairman.
I got it, everyone but DW Nightmist was dead. She got the final blow. Setback took out the Operative.
God, that doesn't sound like an easy one. Any recommendations for strategies?
ive been trying for the last hour or so. ugh.
so far, tried: DW Fixer first, and just blowing up his own stuff. Everyone else playing as normal. Not a lot of luck. Using Obliveon to kill the minon spam
Switched to Nightmist first, fixer last. Use Nightmist as a battery for fixer. Better luck (more often getting down to half hp on the chairman and operative).
Thinking later I'm going to try Nightmist in Mist form as a tank against the operative damage, expat with Speed Loading+a battery for fixer, setback doing whatever he wants, and fixer going for Jackhandle+grease monkey, killing the board, then switching to Dual Crowbars and finishing them off.
thats the hope anyways.
Isn't that setup the ridiculous impossible challenge? Plus Setback?
maybe you just have to win.
Here's how I did it:
Fixer last.
Restart game until the first villain card play is prison break.
If expat starts with no guns, restart game.
if fixer starts with no tools, restart game.
Setback provides ongoings for fixer. Generally provides damage, healing, redirection
If possible, put nightmist into mist form ASAP. Otherwise use Oblivions to clear minions.
Expat shoots stuff.
Fixer uses Jack handle (if he has one) or dual crowbars (if he has them). If he has neither, restart game.
Abuse the rewind feature with nightmist. If you reveal the wrong thing, rewind.
It still requires luck, but setting up the initial conditions makes it a lot easier. You just need to be willing to restart the fight a lot.
>Isn't that setup the ridiculous impossible challenge? Plus Setback?
I got to that ridiculous impossible challenge BY playing as Dark Watch (before Setback came into the game), so that's not a total coincidence!
Woo! Got it! Seems Chairman in RC is the key, and all of Dark Watch is needed.
My last hit was with Setback himself, and only Expat was incapped. Looking up was in play, so that may be a req.
Here's the log: http://pastebin.com/qpCVRjMG
DW Expat, DW Fixer, DW Nightmist, Setback (in that order) vs The Chairman. I substituted in Insula Primalis to see if Rook City was necessary.
My first attempt did not unlock. No incaps, raptors took out the Operative, Fixer the Chairman.
I still feel like there are a lot of variables, time to begin attempt 2.
Something interesting I noticed. The pregame dialogue between Kismet and DW Setback says that she's lost to him before. Perhaps beating Kismet with Setback a part of (possibly leading) the team needs to happen before Rook City.
Round 2. Same team vs Blade in Rook City.
Fixer and Setback were both incapped.
Used quite a bit of redirection and hero v hero damage in this one. Friendly Fire plus Crowbars = whoops i need to pay better attention to Setback’s health.
No unlock.
Unlocked. The Chairman in Rook City; team, in order, was Dark Watch Expatriette, Setback, Dark Watch Nightmist, and Dark Watch Mr. Fixer. Mr. Fixer didn’t incapacitate either villain, and only Nightmist was still on her feet at the end of the game. I think we can assume the point is for the Dark Watch to beat the Chairman on his home turf, without any other stipulations.
Also, big ups to Braithwhite for the strategy guide. Saved me tons of time.
UNLOCKED!!!
Order:
Setback, DW Expat, DW NM, DW Fixer
Final life totals : 6,4,3,6
used a redirect (I think)
I unlocked it, btw, and there is NO requirement for having Fixer deal the final blow, or for redirecting damage, because I did NEITHER during the entire game and still won.
It's also not tied to having anything in play, because everyone was dead except NightMist.
I am pretty sure the EXACT rules are:
1.) Play against the Chairman
2.) In Rook City
3.) with DW Mr. Fixer, DW ExPat, DW NightMist, normal Setback, in any order
4.) win
Anyone else think this is funny, it being a Setback unlock?
I won with the same formula as everyone else. DW Expat, Setback, DW Nightmist, DW Fixer (in that order). Got the unlock.
Just another tip to make your life easier. If you can get Fixer to have Pipe Wrench + Driving Mantis, then he can hit Chairman, and when Chairman relatiates, it goes 2 + 1 (Nemesis) -1 (Pipe Wrench), becomes redirectable with Mantis, and then you can redirect it to Operative, who again gets +1 due to Nemesis. This allowed Fixer to be my "Chairman Killer" without having to worry about Retribution damage, while everyone else focused on Operative. In my game, I did do the Nightmist -> Mist Form trick, but eventually she came out to Oblivion before going back in. Also, Expat had Shotgun turn 1, so she was my Fixer feeder, continuously dropping ongoings or guns for him to kill.
Edit: Oh, in case there are other conditions (seeing as MigrantP hasn't said anyone has the unlock), Looking Up was played (seeing as it pictures the Chairman).
For the record, mine were in a different order:
DW Fixer, Setback, DW ExPatriette, DW NightMist.
So I don't think the order really matters.
I just got it on Android with the same formula, DW crew + Setback vs. Chairman in RC.
As far as cards played by Setback (I'm assuming he's probably the important one), I know that I did NOT play Friendly Fire, WTAP, Cash Out, Fumbling Fool, Turn of Events, or Surprising Fortune.
I know that I did play Looking Up, Karmic Retribution, Reckless Rush, and I think Plucky Break.
I'm unsure on the rest (several failed attempts get foggy with the successful ones).
confirm.
DW Nightmist, Setback, DW Expat, DW Fixer vrs The Chairman in Rook city.
Fixer dealt the finishing blow on both operative and the chairman (operative went down first).
amazingly everyone was up and alive. All because fixers starting hand was Grease Gun, Grease Gun, Salvage yard. I played those for all it was worth.
Unlocked.
Oh my god that was brutal.
MigrantP confirmed that this is all that's required here:
http://steamcommunity.com/app/337150/discussions/0/343787283746438720/?ctp=5#c343787283759104284
Yep the official conditions are:
Defeat The Chairman in Rook City with the 4 hero team: Setback, Dark Watch Expatriette, Dark Watch Mr. Fixer, and Dark Watch NightMist (in any order).
Unlocked.
Chairman/cRook City
DW Expat, DW Nightmist, Setback, DW Fixer, in that order.
Fixer ko'd the Operative, Setback got the Chairman. A very timely Mistbound as well as Jack Handle / Friendly Fire (Overdrive makes this even better) shenanigans was the key.
looking up was in play at the end, plus the Shotgun, Astral Premonition, friendly fire, and the Jack Handle.
Al heroes alive but under 10 hp. No villain cards in play. Scum and Villainy was in play.
Got the unlock on my second attempt.
Nightmist was MVP with her getting into Mistform with everyone in their mid teens. I somehow got The Chairman down to one card in his deck, which was of course Prison Break. Two Mistbounds gave everyone enough time for Setback to take both The Chairman and The Operative in the same turn.
Setback, making the impossible highly unlikely.
Took more than a few resets, but I finally got it as well. And I'm not ashamed to admit it, I gleefully abused the HELL out of Dual Crowbars and Friendly Fire (and poor Setback!) when they both showed up in the first turn!
Poor Setback really took one for the team as Mr. Fixer pounded him into near-oblivion (down to 3 HP, to be exact) with his crowbars, while simultaneously taking down the Operative in turn 1. Unsurprisingly, that particular "strategy" makes the Chairman a LOT easier to take down! :P
wow.
That is a brutal strategy that I never would have thought of. I avoided Friendly Fire like mad, using it only as fodder for DW Fixer, but... yeah. He does the damage then dual crowbars would make it fire again... and again... and again... and agian.... that is brutal.
i love it. Smart play!
That Friendly Fire and Jack Handle combo worked well. I finally beat this scenario using that.
Is anyone willing to help unlock it with em together?
I'm having a hell of a time.
Aside from being murderously effective, I just loved the mental image of an utterly unhinged, post-resurrection Fixer beating the living hell out of both his former pupil AND his own team-mate in an unstopable crowbar-assisted beatdown! ![]()
Oh man, the Crowbars+Friendly Fire combo is hilariously effective. Especially when Setback draws Silver Lining right away, too. I got the unlock, was lucky enough to Risk into Friendly Fire and DW Fixer gave her the Jason Todd treatment. Rest of the game was easy (aside from one round that Prison Break came out).
Putting Fixer at the end is probably the best strategy -- if Nightmist and Expatriette can take out the Underbosses and Thugs, you can let him focus on setting up. I had two or three turns where there just weren't any targets, so by the time the Chairman flipped, he had the Crowbars, Greased Monkey Fist and Harmony all out. By smacking Setback or Nightmist first, he was able to hit the Chairman for 10 HP each turn.
... Though now that I think of it, it would've been even more effective to hit Chairman first, then target Nightmist to bounce it off her. Ah well, live and learn.
Ok. So Crowbars and Friendly fire?
Good to know!
Ho. Ly. Cow.
So, I unlocked DW Setback....on my 10th or 12th try. I didn't restart any bad positions along the way, so I got beat up pretty bad several times...but finally it worked.
The team didn't have a good start (no Crowbars or Jack Handle)--I managed to eliminate the Operative, but by that time, everyone was incapped. Except for DW Nightmist. Who was down to 3 HP.
Then started my hour-long journey of Mistbound and crazy manipulation and healing and redirection. It looked grim a couple of times, but at the end, DW NIghtmist prevailed (at over 20HP, too!)
Whew!
Tony Taurus was Faye's best friend.
THANK YOU TO EVERYONE for promoting friendly fire!
Also, if I can make a suggestion? Hair Trigger Reflexes. If you get that your first turn? Use with Aim, and she is godly. Good buy to Informants and Thiefs!
Yeah, Hairtrigger Reflexes was a must for me when I finally beat "Ridiculous Challenge Time". It was even better here with Setback occasionally letting Expat use a power off-turn. Watching Hairtrigger Reflexes take down a Hired Gun before it could go off was tremendously satisfying.
I was just going to say this. Hairtrigger/Aim is an amazing combo against the Chairman. The most annoying thugs (informant, thief, hired gun) all have 2 hp, and the ability to prevent them from ever going off makes this matchup way more doable. With nightmist soaking operative's retaliatory strikes, this partial lockdown gives you the time you need to kill off the underbosses and finally go after the vilain characters. Those two were definitely the co-mvp's of the first half of my game, with Mr Fixer coming in like a freight train at the end to make short work of the operative and chairman. I never saw friendly fire, so setback wound up being the least involved, although getting Looking Up right away, allowing a key Exceeded Expectations play early helped to clear the board much faster.
Hired Gun has 3 HP.
That's what I thought, but I saw the previous post talking about killing one before it could fire and thought maybe I had remembered wrong. I checked the wiki, and on skimming the entry for hired gun the only number I saw was 2, so I figured I had. Turns out I was looking at its damage, and hp isn't listed. Still, I've always considered thief and informant to be the worst of the thugs, and they're usually my chief targets (though hired gun is definitely close, and depending on the situation, may be an even higher priority). Being able to avoid either of them ever triggering is huge.
How did you take down a hired gun with hairtrigger? Friendly Fire/Wrong Time and Place?
Oh, I see "letting her use a power off turn" so you could aim twice. Nice. I had Setback before Expat in the order, so that wouldn't have worked for me, but it was a good call on your part.
I had the order of Fixer / Expat / Nightmist / Setback. So, yes, I got to use Aim twice in a round a couple times thanks to Setback, and its effect on Hairtrigger Reflexes was glorious.
It was many frustrating attempts but the friendly fire, dual crowbars combo to kill operative round one came through. Chairman got the same treatment once I got silver lining.
I am so so so so confused.
DW Expat, Setback, Nightmist, Fixer was my order.
I killed Chairman and Operative in Rook City.
Nightmist was at 11 HP, everyone else incapped.
No unlock?
Was it cuz I used DW Expat?
Wait, nope, it was cuz I didn't use enough DWs, looks like. Cool. Four hours of retrying wasted, let's go again!
Want a hug? I hate that that happened
I had to retry this fight WAY more times than I care to admit. But the Jack Handle + Driving Mantis combo worked miracles. Fixer and Nightmist tie for MVP here. Grease Gun, MIstform, Mistbound and Astral Preminition are great. The latter will help bury any unwanted Prison Breaks, which is basically game over unless you've managed to go through the entire villain deck.
Handelabra sure knows how to make us work for these unlocks!
Christopher decides the unlocks.
It's not Handelabra. Christopher supplies these unlocks and originally it was supposed to only work on advanced. Which is and isn't harder. The sacrificial Setback with Friendly Fire and Dual Crowbars is the only way I've been able to beat this.
I wonder if Christopher actually attempted this one... :P.
it IS doable, but WAAAAY hard.
My favourite thing? The unlock condition for this was discovered quickly, but taking a while to unlock. The one for Santa guise was quickly unlocked, but hard to identify the conditions....
Aaaand the very next fight, I had Hair-Trigger Reflexes, Mist Form, Friendly Fire and Dual Crowbars in play.
Perfect villain plays; everything came together perfect. I actually spent four turns just building my play areas, once Operative went down, waiting for him to flip. I finished with Setback at 24 HP because he happened to survive killing Operative and then, with 18 tokens on him, I easily worked to have him bring himself back to life with Silver Lining. He was my highest HP! No one KOd, lowest was Mr. Fixer with 3 when he hit the Chairman for 7 overkill.
Work of art.
This is a pretty straight forward one. To be honest I'm still surprised Santa Guise unlock hasn't been figured out.
Apparently Handleabra actually asked Christopher to let them tone it down from what he originally specified…
Yep. I still pleaded for different conditions after that. As I'm still lost on how the story behind it since Setback was a member of Dark Watch before they went after DW Fixer
Yes, but he was also the most reluctant member of the team. Maybe he was saying something along the lines of "Yeah, I'm fighting with you, but I'm totally not a member of this Dark Watch team" until they had a big fight against the Organization, and he finally admitted that he was a part of the team.
The bio for the team says their first threat was DW Fixer
Yes, but just because they were fighting as a team doesn't necessarily mean they considered themselves a team.
It's a stretch, I'll admit. But without having the comics, or an ear in Christopher's brain, anything could have happened.
The bio says the team formed before Fixer joined
>
The hero team known as Dark Watch has gone through a lot. They were originally formed by Expatriette, Setback, and NightMist who were seeking to uncover the truth behind the events of the death of their friend, Mister Fixer.
I do not know the inside of Christopher's head. However, keep in mind that not all variant unlock conditions are "the thing that happened to make the variant exist."
Well, now that I've beat Dark Watch versus Chairman in Rook City, I never plan to do that matchup ever again.
Same. I HATE Dark Watch NightMist.
I won this with Jack Handle and Friendly Fire. Also had Mist Form for Nightmist. Lots of double-strikes with the Jack Handle and Nightmist tanked all the damage from the Operative.
You and me both. She really needs that extra draw to feed all her discards. That said, there is an argument to be made that she can start going off before regular nightmist, because she can play the spells that damage her (and redirect) without then having to damage herself with her power, which in turn reduces the need for healing options. That said, DW Nightmist definitely loves Enlightenment a lot more than regular Nightmist. It's funny, I stopped playing for a while and came back, and I seem to remember that I used to prefer DW Nightmist to regular, but she just feels worse to me now. I feel like there was some trick to using her that I just can't remember.
Not sure if I like the variant better, but I definitely enjoy it. Might be bcause I would use the Tome over Investigation anyway, and often prioritize the Necklace over the Amulet.
It definitely changes your priorities. Regular Nightmist, my first goal is always the amulet. DW Nightmist, I tend to start casting utility spells sooner and looking for Master of Magic instead.
She's also fun with characters like Omnitron-X or The Scholar.
Finally got the stupid thing. Friendly Fire + Jack Handle all the way. Even better is 2x Friendly Fire + Jack Handle
I actually won a round earlier than I should have, because currently 2x Friendly Fire + Jack Handle triggers Friendly Fire 4 times instead of 2 like it's supposed to. But had it behaved "properly" I would have killed The Operative, wiped the board, and brought the Chairman to 1 hp, and Nightmist was around 12 from a Mist-Fueled Recovery. So I wasn't in much danger of losing at that point, even though Setback and Fixer were both at 1 hp.
So, you mean, you play her wrong.
Wouldn’t be the first time.
Of course. Because, as we all know, there is exactly 1, objectively correct way to play NightMist, or any character, for that matter.
Of course. And that one objectively correct way holds true even when Nightmist's base power is dramtically different. It doesn't at all cause different courses of action to become more optimal than they were before.
Got my unlock. Woof, it was rough. I got lucky, too; the first two plays by the villain deck were both Jailbreaks, so underbosses actually left the trash pile.
Well it has been written on the variants site but I think that there is a typo as the one on the website says,
"Defeat The Chairman on advanced in Rook City with the 4 hero team: Setback, Dark Watch Expattriette, Dark Watch Mr. Fixer, and Dark Watch Nightmist (in any order)"
I assume that this is just a typo, or was there a bug and it was only supposed to unlock on advanced?
It was originally supposed to be on advanced
Thanks, fixed that up.
I’m trying for this unlock, and finding it utterly impossible. For me, anyway. Yes, I know this thread is old, I’m just going through old unlocks as a challenge.
The Chariman’s tough, but I’ve found him manageable with teams that have enough defense to wait him out until both jailbreaks have gone by, and then start stomping the underbosses without the threat of them coming back at full health. Alternately, with deck control, you can avoid the jailbreaks. The Darkwatch heroes can’t do either one.
Frankly, it’s a pretty terrible team, with few synergies (aside from the much-discussed crowbars / jack handle + friendly fire combo). Even when I’ve managed to draw Mist Form in the initial hand so NIghtmist can tank all those Operative retaliation strikes, they’ve lost miserably because The Contract and The Muscle killed everyone else, leaving NIghtmist alone and useless.
I guess the only “strategy” is to re-roll the game over and over and over again until you draw Friendly Fire + Crowbars, but I haven’t managed that yet. I don’t see how it’s possible with anything resembling normal play, without counting on that particular setup.
People have accomplished this on normal play it just requires some luck as The Chairman is just rough in Rook City no matter the team. The Dual Crowbars / Friendly Fire combo is the best I’ve seen for getting a consistent win.
This might just be the hardest unlock condition in the entire game, so don't feel bad if it's wearing you down. :/ Try a few others, and come back in between, with, yes, the resignation that you'll need to restart a bunch.
This is actually my last unlock. Well, not entirely, I’ve got a few variants that I unlocked with the button, and I might revisit those just for the challenge and to get the achievement, but everyone else unlocked one way or another. I put Dark Watch Setback off because it was clearly going to be hard.
I did manage it. I gave up trying to play “fair,” and restarted until I got the friendly fire / crowbars setup. I even lucked into getting Silver Lining with Risk after playing Friendly Fire. Nearly ideal, right? And yet I still almost lost.
The early part of the game felt extremely easy without the Operative. The pace was down, and there was no relation damage for killing thugs. Setback was even at nearly full health due to Silver Linings.
The Jailbreaks, though, were bad. By the time I managed to clear away all the underlings from the 2nd Jailbreak and I the Chairman had exhausted his deck, everyone was in single digits for HP. With the Chairman at 30+ HP and my heroes at 5-7 each, no one could afford to attack him. They’d just get killed by the retaliations.
Once Nightmist got the Amulet of the Elder Gods, she could afford to attack, since she could reflect his retaliation. She was steadily gaining health, too, since she also drew the Starshield Amulet. It helped that Mr. Fixer gave her a bunch of cards back with Salvage Yard.
Mr. Fixer drew a couple of grease guns, so when he played them, Ex Patriette and Setback could hit the Chairman. Otherwise, they focused on killing any underlings that came out on the the second pass through the deck.
I really thought I was going to lose there for a while, though.
But you didn't! :D Congrats!
I think there’s a minor synergy there between Mr. Fixer’s Salvage Yard and Nightmist’s relics. She’s constantly discarding cards to the Elder Amulet and the Starshield Amulet and occasionally to things like Mistbound. If she’s discarding artifacts, Mr. Fixer can give them back to her wholesale with Salvage Yard. It’s not hard for her to get back 6+ cards from that play.
Salvage Yard also helps with Dark Watch Fixer’s card destruction, which is almost always a severe drawback to this version. Somewhat. Getting back some of the stuff he’s broken is helpful, but doesn’t help with the time lost playing cards which he then broke. It’s a much stronger effect with Nightmist because she probably didn’t spend time playing the returned cards, she probably discarded them.
Salvage Yard also helps expatriette get a lot from speed loading. Personnaly i like DW Fixer better than the regular as i play cards I would almost never play with regular fixer notably Bloody Knuckles and Riveting Crane. His positioning can influence wich cards he can easily canibalize. He plays best before those with temporary ongoings that neuter the villain (Ground Pound, Heroic interception, Monolith, etc.) or as a safety after risk takers that put cards that can mess them up in play with powers (Setback, PW Fanatic (ill times end of times...), Santa Guise).
My usual take is that I find Dark Watch Mr. Fixer to be nearly useless, since his card destruction often outweighs the benefits of his attack, so he spends a lot of turns skipping his power phase. All too often he feels like a useless lump, good for redirecting attacks with Driving Mantis and little else.
However, you raise a good point. When is destruction of your own cards good? When it’s a negative card. Why would you play a negative card? When you don’t get a choice, namely the heroes who force blind card plays, such as Setback, PW Fanatic, and Santa Guise. Less common are cards that are good initially but negative later, cards which usually have “Power: Destroy this card,” such as Punish the Weak, Localized Hurricane, and Imbued Fire.
I don’t find DW Fixer’s destruction that much of an issue. Often his own stuff is worthwhile destroying because you have a tool or style you can dispose of be used your hand is full of them. Some good Ongoing cards are also worthwhile destroying as they have no further impact depending on turn order because there are various Ongoings which only last a turn. An ideal pairup is Mainstay and Stuntman since between them most of their stuff confers a benefit on destruction.
On Dark Watch Fixer by himself - Mr. FIxer is generally the most effective when he has a tool and a style in play when he attacks. Ideally you want Harmony as well. So, round 1 you play a style or a tool and do nothing. Round 2 you play a style or a tool and destroy one, assuming you have a replacement. If you destroy Driving Mantis you’ve lost all the benefit of the style, if you destroy Pipe Wrench you’ve lost the defensive benefit. Destroying Jack Handle or Dual Crowbars usually means playing a much weaker tool, since those are usually his strongest weapons. Destroying Tire Iron’s not so bad - unless you’re up against a villain who deploys a lot of 4-5 health targets. Dark Watch Fixer often can’t use Harmony at all, but getting Harmony out isn’t that common.
So, kind of weak, but not necessarily as bad as my knee-jerk reaction to self-destruction. The benefit is that his attack goes from a weak plink (1 point) to something that can plow through most defenses (3 points).
On combos with heroes who have benefits from card destruction - this isn’t that common, but fair point. It’s true that a number of Stuntman’s cards say “you get to do this significant thing on destruction,” regardless of what triggers the destruction. Some of KNYFE’s cards say that too. Mainstay I don’t know, since I’ve never played the physical game, so I only know his character from The Sentinels.
At least for my preference I’ll take DW Fixer over the base version. The harder hits even with the forced destruction are worth it more often than not.
Dark Watch Mr. Fixer is incredibly great. The other heroes almost always have cards to volunteer for destruction, and even without that, all it takes is a little patience. Play a card, skip one power use, and then you're on to the cycle of destruction.
I prefer regular Mr. Fixer myself, mostly because of a general aversion to card destruction, but I do appreciate how Dark Watch Fixer turns Bloody Knuckles from a risky play to a no-brainer.
It’s not entirely a no-brainer, though it often is. In the Dark Watch Setback unlock, for example, I couldn’t afford Bloody Knuckles on Mr. Fixer because the Chairman’s retaliation would kill him.
Good point
I have no idea if this has been pointed out before, so apoligies for redundancies. My strategy that eventually worked was to lock the Chairman and Rook City's decks. It's not as reliable as Dual Crowbar/Friendly Fire, but I was too impatient to reset until I got that hand, so this happened accidently. Basically, this is more something to just keep in mind as a longshot possibility.
Incap DW Mr. Fixer puts an envrionment card from trash on bottom of deck. Incap DW Nightmist puts the top card of a trash on top of it's deck.
It's possible, however unlikely it sounds, to engineer a case where the environment deck is near empty and The Chairman plays Perfect Human Specimines. As long as those envrionment cards aren't Scum and Villiany, and you deal with the Chairman's damaging targets, you can force a hard lock. Nightmist puts the PHS back on top of Chairman's deck every turn, and Fixer alternates Tony and Tremada on the bottom of the envrionment deck, since they will keep getting destroyed by the Villain Character cards.
From here, Setback can generate tokens and heal himself back to safety, and Expat can just play every single card ever. Then, whenever you want, build up setback's token pool and one-shot the operative and chairman.
This all sounds pie in the sky rediculous, but I've made it work 3 times- my Steam, my brother's Steam, and my phone, out of proably 10 or 11 total games attempted. It's tedious, but safe, and you get a feel pretty quick if this setup is going to be possible. (Early prison breaks and scum/villany are your friends.)
Maybe that’s not as hard as it sounds at first. Neither condition (Perfect Human Specimens last played, Tony and Dr. Tremada are the only cards in the environment deck) really relies on chance.
Assume both are are incapacitated. Any time Tony or Dr. Tremada is in the trash, Mr. Fixer puts them back. Eventually the environment will be only those 2 cards. Any time the Chairman plays Perfect Human Specimens, Nightmist puts that back. Unless the environment forces another Chairman play, or an Informant plays a Chairman card, the Chairman is locked into playing that card forever. The Operative will shuffle the Chairman’s deck every turn, but that happens after they play Perfect Human Specimens.
The main issue is that the Operative will still play all the underbosses, so you need to deal with each of them in turn. You can assume that Jailbreak is put on hold forever, so they won’t come back once you get rid of them.
Informants and Scum and Villany are both a problem because they can break the Perfect Human Specimens lock. Twisting Back Alleys can also break it, but it’s destroyable before it takes effect.
Worth noting also that once you have a lock in place, or are very close, Twisted Back Alley and Blighted Streets do nothing and don’t need to be destroyed.
