I suspect you unlock The Scholar of the Infinite by having The Scholar put on proper clothes.
Says the man with no pants.
Possibly have all three forms put at once and discard for all of them? Haven't tried it yet but it seems a likely Scholar unlock.
Well, it's not that. Or finish the game with the Scholar at full health.
It's 6:38 AM. Am I wearing pants? Who can say?
Maybe it's get incapped while all three elemental cards are out. I haven't been able to get that yet, but wioth his incap artwork, I feel like it's a possibility
I tried this, and it did not work. It was in Pike vs Ambuscade
It's not having his entire deck in his hand, either. Tried to then get all copies of his elementals into play, but stupidly had gone up against Omnitron, so I gave up after a Flechettes.
The answer is not
Baron Blade
Insula Primalis (however it is spelt)
against greatest legacy (promo) SS Tach Ardent and Scholar
killing blow turn loose his entire deck minus 1
Thoery beat Gloomweaver and Baron Blade with Scholar and Visionary
There have been at least two unlocks now. Here's the link to the first screenshot, and my own is posted in response: https://twitter.com/esaka_jiro/status/667862847641161728
I went with the same line-up, environment, and villain as the first person did, for consistency. Scholar, Nightmist, Haka, Ra, and Argent Adept vs. regular Gloomweaver in Realm of Discord. The flavor for Scholar of the Infinite describes him as a gateway between reality and the void, which might indicate Realm of Discord is important. From his screenshot and his comment that the unlock came after the end of match, Gloomweaver's turn must have just started and triggered a relic victory. Second screenshot was also an end-of-game unlock, but otherwise did things a bit differently---brought Gloomweaver to 0 health during an incapped Scholar's turn, letting Haka use a power to fire a Savage Mana. (Even with the other screenshot showing it wasn't necessary, it seemed like a very flavor-y way to do it.) Since the Scholar of the Infinite text indicates says he "cannot protect himself," him being incapped is probably a necessary part of the unlock. I also had two other heroes incapped, so even though there's flavor about Scholar protecting his allies, it seems like you don't need to keep everyone else alive.
So my current guess---beat Gloomweaver in Realm of Discord while Scholar is incapped. Method of winning and whose turn it is don't seem to be important so far. As for what cards are otherwise in play---looks like neither of us had any pins or Ophidian in play, so that could be relevant again, but it's hard to say from two examples whether any particular cards need to be absent or present. Obviously, Scholar himself was incapped, so nothing of his was in play, for whatever that's worth.
I just bear He with a team of tachyon unity scholar dark vis and tempest.Scholar incapped but had played all three elemental and truth seeker.Scholar incapped by sucker punch. No villain targets in play.No unlock
Something else is required, HeroComplex. I took the same team against Gloomy in Realm. Incpped the Scholar with NightMist just befoer she killed Gloomy. No unlock. No one except Scholar incapped.
Did you use Alchemical Redirection at all, as that would fulfill the proteting others while unable to protect himself clause?
Villain : Gloomweaver
location : Realm of Discord
Team : SS Tachyon Unity Scholar Tempest Dark Visionary
Scholar incapped by Gw by Alchemical Redirection
Normal victory One Pin in play
No Unlock
Unlocked:
Advanced Gloomweaver in Realm of Discord
Team: Visionary, Scholar, Redeemer Fanatic, Legacy
Gloomweaver was killed by Absolution on Scholar's incapped turn.
Over the course of the game Scholar had: all three forms in play at once, played alchemical redirection, played Know When to Hold Fast, played Don't Dismiss Anything, played Proverbs and Axioms. (Incapped himself using energy damage from Mortal Form to Energy.)
I definitely get the flavor of Alchemical Redirection, but I don't think I ever played it. I had 2 each of the Liquid and Energy elementals for a while---folks like Argent Adept letting me play Know When to Hold Fast on other player's turns made the discards pretty doable---and I think I had Flesh Into Iron in play for just one turn after it was pulled by Don't Dismiss Anything. I let Flesh Into Iron expire because at that point I was ready to let him get Incapped, so I did have all three in play at one point (really, five total), but not right when he got flipped. Pretty sure the incap came from a use of Haka's Taiaha---sent right at him, not redirected. I also don't believe I ever used Expect the Worst or Get Out of the Way in that game, for whatever those are worth, but I'm pretty sure everything also saw play. May have played Grace Under Fire once, not sure, and definitely played Know When to Turn Loose to self-damage for 12 when I was ready to get incapped.
Edit: By the way, in my unlock, Gloomweaver had just played Drum of Despair, which was the only relic of his I'd seen all game. Since I was about to kill him with Savage Mana, I didn't bother with it. So a Gloom relic in play should not prevent the unlock, and there were none in his discard for me---presumably all three for the other guy.
Ok. It's not Gloomy in Realms (I think those are important components, though) vs Scholar, AZ and Dark Visionary. Scholar had all three forms out at one point, but didn't sustain them all which might be important. Scholar incapped. Relic victory. Did not play anything except the forms, Bring What You Need and Keep Moving all game. Died to villain damage.
Did not unlock.
what cards from the environment when the unlock happens, it may be the factor we need
Got the unlock:
GW in Realm: we assume this is important
Vis, AA, Scholar, NM, and Haka (oddly fun team comp, slow to get going, but crazy fun synergy)
Played all forms, Alchemical Redirection, and several draw cards.
Scholar died to Haka's Taihia empowered by Haka of Battle with 1 liquid, 1 iron, and 3 energy out. Redirection was out at time of "death."
GW died to Vis auto damage card before Scholar used an incap power (plan was to use incap ability to win)
In summary I think it's:
GW in realm; Scholar incapped after using Redirection; fight on to victory.
Forms might be needed, but I think that might be just making things more complicated than it has to be.
Probably just throwing out crazy talk, but has anyone unlocked Scholar without a Prime Warden on the team?
Maybe at least one of AA, Fanatic, Haka or Tempest needs to be with Scholar after he goes down to Gloomweaver--and they go on to defeat him.
My friend unlocked Scholar in Insula Primalis, with Nightmist and AA on the team vs. Gloomweaver. Scholar was incapped.
Got it. Legacy, Fanatic, Scholar, Visionary vs Gloomweaver in Realm of Discord. Scholar had 3 elementals out and had used redirection once. Fanatic incapped him. Then got relic victory.
Failed unlock.
Gloom weaver in the tomb of Anubis
Redeemer Fanatic, Scholar, Tachyon, Zero, and Expat.
Scholar had all 3 elemental forms in play, plus Truth Seeker and Redirection when incapped. Incapped on gloomy's turn.
Fanatic nuked Gloomy immediately after the incap. No unlock.
Failed unlock.
Standard GW in RoD
Ra, Fanatic, Haka, Scholar, AA.
Scholar did Redirection and was defeated from Drum of Despair hits the next Villain turn (so source of damage was GW himself) - I did this intentionally early and had only played a Transmutive Recovery and a Grace Under Fire on prior turns, no Elementals.
All other heroes survived (R 11, F 11, H 9, and AA 9), defeat of GW was by destroying Relics. No Villain cards in play at game's end. Only Environment card was the Time Flies distortion.
Based on prior successes mentioned, I think that the Elementals might be an important component.
Does anybody have info on whether the timing of when Scholar is incapped might matter (does the win need to occur in the next round maybe)?
unlocked him, realm of discord is NOT required as I did it in silvergultch. Team was Nightmist, Adapt, Tempest plus the scholar vs Gloomweaver. Also, did not use all the element forms and he incaped due to redirection, had used truth seeker on him due to the art featuring scholar vs gloomweaver. it took a few rounds afterwards to win and everyone else was at or near full health.
Gloomweaver in Tomb
Redeemer Fanatic/Scholar/Grandpa Legacy/Visionary.
had all elemental forms in play, plus redirection and truth seeker. Visionary incapacitated Scholar immediately before a three-relic victory.
also failed to unlock. :(
maybe it requires redirecting a certain ammount of damage with the redirection as I redirected an explosive wagon worth of damage from three characters before it incaped him (Nightmist was untouched due to mistform)
Unlocked!
Same setup as my last post.
This time I had Scholar incapacitated while all 3 elements were in play and the Redirection active (although I knocked him out with a hit from Haka). I also made a point of having and using Truth Seeker during the game (including hitting GW with it, still in play when Scholar knocked out).
Final situation had all other heroes still active, defeated GW by knockout (on first side). Scholar incap the round prior to the win. No other Villain cards in play, only one distortion in play for environment (although it sounds like the environment isn't important).
So: Scholar on team vs. GW. Scholar incapped when Alchemical Redirection active, and after using TS to hit GW at least once. Remaining heroes win?
I unlocked it as well.
Scholar, Nighmist, Grandpa Legacy, Haka vs Gloomweaver in Silver Gulch.
Scholar's forms were not all in play at the time of incap, but were all used in the game. Had Truth seeker out, but I don't recall hitting GW with it. Should have payed better attention. Redirection incapped scholar, and nightmist's obilvilon finished GW off, and unlocked Scholar of the Infinite.
I think Redirection and Truth Seeker are essential for sure.
For those talking about Alchemical Redirection probably being necessary—I could be wrong, as it's possible it popped out from something like Don't Dismiss Anything without my remembering it, but I don't think I ever played it in my game. Others have unlocked with it, so obviously if folks want to play it just in case, no harm, but I don't think it'll be a necessary aspect.
I definitely used Truth Seeker a lot, so I assume I hit Gloomweaver with it at least once, which certainly seems plausible as a component of the unlock.
Failed attempt
Crazy Ass Team - SS Tachyon, Argent Adept, Visionary, Unity, Scholar
Villain - Gloomweaver
Environment - Silver Gultch
At one point had all of scholars elements on the field at once, used truth seeker multiple times to hit gloom, villain incapped Scholar due to redirection with no elements in play, all other members were alive and Tachyon dealt the final blow to Gloom with light speed barrage on Argent Adepts turn. Only came across 1 relic (drum) which was destroyed.
Cards on Scholar's field when incapped - BWYN, Truth Seeker, Alchemical Redirection.
Worth mentioning: I had all relics in the trash during my unlock. And Cursed Acyolyte was the one who incapped Scholar.
Just unlocked!
Team: Fanatic, Argent Adept, Tempest, and Scholar
Villain: Standard Gloomweaver
Environment: Realm of Discord
Long game, but throughout the game, Scholar had played all 3 of his elementals (2 of them were in play when he was incapped), I had in play and used at some point "Bring What You Need" and "Truth Seeker" (I also purposefully used Truth Seeker on Gloomweaver). I waited around until I nearly had Gloomweaver dead, and then I played Alchemical Redirection (at this point Gloomy had 3 HP left, so I knew I would beat him on Fanatic's turn). The Grimoire of Curses was out, so I knew I could incap Scholar.
I had Scholar redirect everyone's damage so that he was incapped, Gloomy played the drum, and then it went to Fanatic's turn. Fanatic finished it with an environment boosted Brutal Censure.
My theory is this: Have Scholar on the team vs. Gloomweaver. At any point in the game, use Truth Seeker and Bring What You Need's powers, and then incap Scholar with damage from Gloomweaver while at least 2 elementals are in play. Then defeat Gloomweaver in the next round.
I fairly certain relics are not a factor as they were in all 3 possible positions (trash, deck and in play) when I unlocked him. Maybe the factor we are missing is teammate health? I know my full team had 15 plus Heath
During my unlock, Scholar was incapped by damage from another hero, not GW. I had used BWYN as well, though.
I didn't note my team's health during my unlock, but at least a few of them were dangerously low when I won (Haka had recently done a large heal and was at least 15, maybe closer to 20, but I want to say that I'd let AA and Fanatic drop pretty low as I reached endgame).
Ok, so I'm not 100% sure on the BWYN...here are 2 alternate theories:
Have Scholar on the team vs. Gloomweaver. At any point in the game, use Truth Seeker and Bring What You Need's powers, and then incap Scholar while at least 2 elementals are in play. Then defeat Gloomweaver in the next round.
or
Have Scholar on the team vs. Gloomweaver. At any point in the game, use Truth Seeker's power to damage Gloomweaver, and then incap Scholar while at least 2 elementals are in play. Then defeat Gloomweaver in the next round.
My unlock disputes your theory on two points, first I only had at most one elemental in play when I in capped the scholar, plus it took me a few turns afterwards to defeat gloom weaver
Neither did I, but similar to Haka's speculated unlock, perhaps it merely requires that they are all played during the game.
I didn't play all three elements though(skipped either iron or liquid, can't recall which), though I think I had mortal to energy in play when he was went down.
Got the unlock.
Team was Scholar, Fanatic, Haka, ExPatriette, and Argent Adept
Gloomweaver in Relam of Discord.
I used Alchemical redirection to incap Scholar, but the scholar didn't have any cards out at the time. In the case of Truthseeker I know I didn't use it on Gloomweaver himself.
The turn he went down I had Haka Savage mana two of the three relics into the third getting a relic victory at the start of the Villain turn.
EDIT: Checked the log: I was able to play all three of his forms. Although the Liquid and Energy forms were briefly there, most of the time I was in Iron form. It also seemed like I played each card at least once.
Just unlock but wasn't taking good notes.
fought gloomweaver on Mars. ( so based off above this is not environment dependent.)
scholor incapped by cultist. Only liquid and energy forms came out the entire time. Iron only was discarded. None of the forms in play never destroyed. The redirection card, bring your own gear and ongoing that does damage and draw in play. Unlocked at victory.
thoughts: scholar need to be incapped and win. Doesn't require all forms in play.
May depend on number of cards discarded over game? Not sure if anyone has been keeping count on that.
Unlocked Scholar.
Nightmist, AA, Scholar, and Ra in Insula Primalis vs. Gloomweaver.
Played 4 elemental cards: Solid to Liquid x1, Mortal Form to Energy x 4
Didn't play Truth Seeker at all.
Used Alchemical Redirection to redirect damage to the Scholar (which defeated him).
All allies dropped below 10 hp at one point before Scholar died. I think just before his redirection.
Defeated Gloomweaver.
Unlocked.
Scholar, Dark Viz, NM, Tempest, and AG Legacy. Gloomweaver in Atlantis.
I was specifically testing to see if elemental forms were a requirement, so I intentionally did not use any at all during the game. It wouldn't be a good proof if I didn't unlock him though, so I went out of my way to use every other card and power in his whole deck. It was a rediculously long game, and everybody had to shuffle their trash back into their deck at least once. Hero HP was all over the board, from <10 to max, but the whole team wasn't ever all in danger at the same time.
Played Redirection just before NM threw down Oblivion, and that took Scholar out. On the next turn, took out Gloomy with another Oblivion. Scholar came before her in turn order, so he did use his incap power once (to let Tempest use a power and do damage), but I don't know if that matters.
I'm also leaning toward the idea that he needs certain other people on the team, but I haven't seen anything conclusive posted. I'm thinking there might be a requirement like just a certain number of other "mystical" type heroes on the team. Like AA, NM, Viz, etc. That's just a theory though, and I don't think we have enough evidence yet to support that.
We've already proven that environment doesn't matter.
Do we know for a fact that you have to be fighting Gloomy? Or is that just speculation since it works? I've had so much proactice fighting him to get Dark Watch Nightmist and Dark Visionary (not to mention the Gloomy and Spite varients) that I may never fight him again. He's way too easy now, and it's just getting monotonous.
I can say conclusively that playing elemental forms are not part of the requirement.
do you know if you had to discard any cards during this process? i have been wondering if discarding X cards is one of the parameters.
Since I didn't have any elementals out, the only discards I made for the whole game were because of environment or villian effects, which usually don't ever exceed 1 discard per round with the given situation.
No wait, I knew when to turn loose once. That was a fun sentence to type. I trashed Scholar's entire hand of about 14 or 15 cards in one go. Only did it once, but that is a good point to bring up. We cannot yet discount large amounts of discards then, can we?
I know I could have said that in a more compact way, but for some reason I write like I talk.
I've done multiple attempts testing various theories, all failing, and I haven't really ever discarded a lot of cards.
Perhaps that is indeed what I've been missing.
Still no unlock
Fanatic, Scholar, Ra, Visionary, and Greatest Legacy vs. Gloomweaver in Megalopolis.
Scholar was incapped on turn with Redirection in play. Incap damage came from Cursed Acolyte. Truth Seeker and bring What you need were both in play and had been used, damaging Gloom weaver with Truth Seekr.
Only elemental card I played was Mortal Form to Energy, but copies of all 3 were in Scholar's trash.
No character other than Scholar had ever dropped below 20 hp.
Waited to finish off gloomy until I had used Scholars incap ability at least once.
OK, so I don't think it's just discarding lots of cards, nor redirecting and discarding a lot of cards.
I tried two matches vs. Gloomweaver. In the first, The Scholar didn't do anything except attempt to draw more cards so he ended up discarding 23 to power a Know When to Turn Loose. He also discarded 11 other cards throughout the match for other reasons.
In the second, 14 cards were discarded to a Toxic Seaweed, and a few more to other effects. I also used Alchemecial Redirection in this one.
Both had The Scholar incapped just before the end. Neither unlocked the variant.
I think I'll try again only counting discards the Scholar makes on his own turn.
Edit: And no, that didn't work.
Unlocked.
Gloomweaver in Realm of Discord.
Scholar, Legacy, Tempest, Wraith.
Scholar incapped from villain damage (fairly sure one of the cultists) without using redirection.
Gloomy defeated and variant unlocked on Legacy's incap turn (the turn after Scholar, who was incapped during the previous villain turn) by Legacy allowing Tempest to activate a power (Grievous Hail Storm).
Played literally every Scholar card except Alchemical Redirection, in fact was waiting to draw one at the end but had left Scholar too low and Gloomy surprised me and took him out before I could draw the card. If discarding is being considered as a factor, I discarded about 12 cards for a Know When to Turn Loose (for zero damage, targeted something that wasn't lowest hp when Claustrophobic Delusion was in play). I also specifically made sure I used each power at least once and healed once when the +1 healing mode was in play and also healed once when the healing=damage mode was in play. I kept the 2 DR mode in play slightly longer but I'd be surprised if it was X amount of damage blocked, because I didn't get that much use out of it. However I did do a fair amount of healing, mostly from one shots. From other posts it doesn't look like the rest of the team is a factor, but just in case when I won, Legacy was also incapped and both Tempest and Wraith were low, both at least under 10. Oh and since someone else mentioned it, I used Scholar's in cap ability once as well (+Power).
Unlocked. All I had to do was have a huge shmozz of a game with Gloomweaver where I drew every card, played every card, discarded every card, and used every power. It took an hour and a half because my iPad kept lagging every time I opened Scholar's window with his 30+ card hand. I slogged through it because I'm a sucker for achievements. But man, this was not all that fun.
Popesixtus, was The Scholar incapped at the end?
OK... that was unexpected... I just unlocked him!
I didn't use The Scholar's whole deck. I didn't discard a ton of cards. I didn't immediately defeat Gloomy after The Scholar got incapped. In fact, The Scholar got incapped quite early and I thought there was no way I'd unlock him, but I might as well try continuing!
I'm not sure what the difference is to my previous attempts... but here's all the info I can gather from the log for further help to others. I'll list everything that happened to a Scholar card, just in case it helps. I'll provide a summary of what I think might be the key at the end.
The Scholar, Haka and Ra battling Gloomweaver in Insula Primalis.
Turn 1:
The Scholar plays Don't Dismiss Anything.
Don't Dismiss Anything puts Know When to Hold Fast into play.
Turn 2:
The Scholar plays Bring What You Need.
The Scholar uses the power on Bring What You Need.
Turn 3:
The Scholar plays Keep Moving.
Keep Moving puts Solid to Liquid into play.
Keep Moving plays Mortal Form to Energy.
The Scholar uses the power on The Scholar.
Turn 4:
The Scholar discards Grace Under Fire.
The Scholar discards Flesh to Iron.
The Scholar plays "Get Out of the Way!".
The Scholar uses the power on Bring What You Need.
Turn 5:
Solid to Liquid destroys itself!
Mortal Form to Energy destroys itself!
The Scholar plays Offensive Transmutation.
The Scholar uses the power on Bring What You Need.
Primordial Plant Life destroys Bring What You Need!
Turn 6:
The Scholar plays Alchemical Redirection.
The Scholar uses the power on The Scholar.
The Scholar takes 20 damage (mostly redirected, as River of Lava and Cursed Acolyte both came out)
Turn 7:
Alchemical Redirection destroys itself!
The Scholar plays Keep Moving.
Keep Moving puts Mortal Form to Energy into play.
Keep Moving plays Solid to Liquid.
The Scholar uses the power on The Scholar.
River of Lava moved Keep Moving from The Scholar's deck to The Scholar's trash.
River of Lava moved Offensive Transmutation from The Scholar's deck to The Scholar's trash.
River of Lava moved Know When to Turn Loose from The Scholar's deck to The Scholar's trash.
A pair of Cursed Acolytes come out together and incapacitate The Scholar
Turn 8:
The Scholar uses the incapacitated ability "One hero may use a power now."
Turns 9-15:
The Scholar uses the incapacitated ability "Up to 2 hero targets regain 1 HP each."
I know I have played this combination of cards before, so I don't think any of them was important. I know I have discarded a ton more cards before, so that can't be it. The only other villain I've fought in the meantime from the previous attempts was Miss Information, who I had already defeated once before. The Scholar was on that team, so perhas there's a condition that The Scholar defeats Miss Information, then The Scholar defeats Gloomweaver, but I really doubt that.
What I do think it might be is the amount of healing I did to others. In all my other attempts, I never healed the other heroes much at all. I would us Proverbs and Axioms at most once per run. Perhaps that's the key.
So my current guess to the unlock condition is:
Defeat Gloomweaver with The Scholar on the team while The Scholar is incapacitated. During the fight, The Scholar must heal other heroes for a total of X HP or more.
I think X may be around 10, but I'm not sure. Or perhaps X is 20 and the heroes include The Scholar, but I'm fairly sure I've healed that much before too.
If anyone else can test out my healing others idea, that'd be great.
Yes he was. And thank goodness, cuz the game stopped lagging when he died!
OK, so it definitely seems incapping is required. Which goes with the art on the Scholar of the Infinite too.
So did others with the unlock heal HP a lot?
I'm thinking the unlock has to be tied to either healing HP, redirecting damage, or perhaps some combination of both. Other reports seem to have pretty much ruled out specific cards.
Scholar of the Infinite unlocked.
Fight was vs Gloomy in the Final Wasteland (I was trying for Haka at the same time, and didn't get him).
Team was Dark Vis, Grandpa Legs, Scholar, and Haka.
Outside of the actions mentioned, he was buffed a few times by Inspiring Presence, but everything else he did was self contained, and most all the damage taken was from Haka; his incap was brought on by an Alchemical Redirection when Haka swung his Taiha at Vis. I also specifically avoided using Motiviational Charge.
Pre 1: Took 6 from Chosen Disciple.
1: Transmutive Recovery, Power to heal 1.
Enviro: hit by a Skunk Ape.
2: Know When to Hold Fast.
Enviro: hit by a Skunk Ape.
3: DDA (Plays Prophetic Vision, Inspiring Presence, Keep Moving, which chains into Mortal Form to Energy then a Transmutive Recovery, and then he hit a pin for 3, also plays Haka of Shielding). He then healed for 1, and zapped the Ape for 2, destroying it.
Enviro: healed by Con's Bunker, zaps a pin.
Villain: punched by a Zombie.
4: Discards Flesh to Iron. Played BWYN, which he used.
5: Discards Keep Moving. Plays Proverbs & Ax: (Wrest, Danger Sense, Solid to Liquid, Mere), Visionary & Legs heal, Scho takes damage, heals self, and zaps a pin, Haka damages self, destroys the pin. BWYN.
6: Discards Grace Under Fire. DDA: Topdecks Brain Burn, Thokk!, Proverbs, Vitality Surge. Heals and zaps a pin.
Haka hits him with a Rampage for 1 (Punish & TTE in play).
7: Discards Keep Moving. Transmutive Recovery, zaps Gloomy for 3. BWYN.
8: Discards Flesh to Iron. Truth Seeker. Heals 1, Zaps Gloomy for 2.
9: Discards Grace Under Fire. Proverbs (Precog, Interception, Alchemical (finally), Elbow), Visionary heals, Legs takes damage, uses his power on Haka so that Haka can Mere, Scholar takes damage, heals self and deals 2 to Gloomy, Haka takes damage and Crushes). Truth Seeker for 3 to Gloomy.
10: Discards Flesh to Iron. Proverbs (Mental Divergence, Surge of Str, Expect the Worst, Enduring Intercession), Dark Vis takes damage, uses Foresight (I was trying to get HP low here to end the game soon), Legacy takes damage, heals Haka, Haka hits a Rat Beast, Scho takes damage, heals self, zaps Gloomy for 2, Haka takes 0 damage and finishes off the Rat Beast. TS for 2 to Gloomy.
Enviro: Skunk Ape hits Scholar for 1.
11: Discards Solid to Liquid. Get Out of The Way: 2 to Gloom & the Ape, heals 2, deals 3 to Gloomy. TS: 3 more to Gloomy.
Legacy plays Bolster, Scholar gets another Alchemical Redirection.
12: Discards Expect the Worst. Offensive Transmutation: 3 to Gloomy. TS for 3 to Gloomy.
(Reshuffles deck here)
Haka Elbow smashes Scho for 5, and Taiha's him for 5 more.
Legacy flying smashes the Scholar for 5.
13: Discards Expect the Worst. Alchemical Redirection. TS for 3 to Gloomy.
Haka Elbow smashes the Scholar for 5. Haka aims a Taiha hit at Visionary which incaps the Scholar via Alchemical Redirection.
Incap 1: One hero may use a power: Haka Mere's to smack Legacy.
Incap 2: One hero may use a power: Haka destroys his Punish the Weak.
And that was it. Haka was the last man standing, but I didn't manage to unlock him.
Hope that helps. If not, sorry for the massive text dump.
OK, so if it's a healing thing, it's all healing that counts. Both to himself and allies.
Unlocked Scholar,
Gloomweaver (Advanced) in Wasteland
Scholar (incap via Abs zero "friendly" fire), Exp (incap via kryptid), Abs Zero very potent slinging ice every where and healing himself for a ton of hp
I think we are awefully close here. Just did a little bit of refining.
Party probably doesn't matter, took two very non magicky charachters. Expatriette and Abs Zero.
Someone other than Scholar can be down at the end, Exp was accidentally out when I finished.
I made a point of never healing anyone other than the character itself. Absolute zero got set up right away and I tried to keep track of how much but it was an insane amount and I got tired. Scholar healed himself for a moderate amount but nothing crazy.
I tried other set ups and failed but I think the reason I failed is I was intentionally playing scholar poorly so he didn't heal much, mainly redirected and died. In this battle Lots and lots of self healing. 0 ally healing.
Absolute Zero is going to be pretty happy, the wasteland will be a cold and lonely place, just the way he likes it.
Hypothesis:
A) Scholar gets incapped vs Gloomweaver but heros still win
B) a X amount of healing must happen. X>10
If I were to guess X it must be a significant number for the scholar or Gloom. Considering my game I probably healed over 100 so I can't say much. I figure in the game I won with no unlock I at least healed for a couple but I can't be sure.
Future thing to determine is if all healing counts towards requirement or only scholar healing. I didn't heal much with scholar but it is hard not to heal with him if you are going to use him at all and not turtle. I did have 1 or 2 moderate heals from that fire to healing card. when I played it I was also chaining that to some moderate energy damage so it might involve a certain amount of healing and damage within 1 turn for scholar. That would be next idea if the healing by itself turns out to be a dead end.
Good luck y'all! I am done with my testing...
Read the wall of text from Cokeandsympathy, looks like he did a lot of heal zapping. Rather than scholar healing per se it might be a minimum amount of zapping that chains from the healing.
In my successful run, here's the total of all HP healed with sources and number of times used (I saved the Steam log file of the run):
Ra - Staff of Ra: 5 HP (2)
The Scholar - Better Living: 5 HP (3)
Haka - Vitality Surge: 2 HP (1)
The Scholar - "Get Out of the Way!": 4 HP (1)
The Scholar - Incapacited Ability (heal Ra and Haka for 1 each): 14 HP (7)
Haka - Haka of Restoration: 2 HP (1)
So summarising, we have the following stats:
The Scholar healed himself: 9 HP
The Scholar healed any hero: 23 HP
Hero healing total: 32 HP
It should be noted that Pouch of Bones also healed a lot of Villain stuff this run, but I really don't think it counts. If healing is a thing, I expect it's either the Scholar causes hero targets to regain at least 20 HP, or hero targets regain at least 30 HP.
So if it's either of those, along with The Scholar being incapped by the end, hopefully this is enough to cover them.
Got him.
Scholar, Greatest Legacy, Haka, Wraith, and Visionary vs. Gloomweaver in Insulation Primalis.
Scholar was KO'd at game end. Focused on doing lots of healing. Didn't count how much, but after Scholar's incap, Motivational Charge was going off twice a round,
Never played Truth Seeker. Only one form card played. Did use Alchemical Redirection on the turn Scholar went down.
Upon reflection I really suspect the healing is incidental. Scanning other unlocks it seems mortal form to energy was a required elemental card. That card is unique because it takes healing and turns it into damage. It sort of fits the idea of him being a gateway. Healing in one place becomes damage in another and he is the conduit. Rather than heal you probably need to heal and turn it into a minimum amount of energy damage accross the game. If you are sandbagging scholar it is still pretty easy for him to throw out some good damage numbers as he starts to fall. You have to be actively playing him poorly to have him not contribute to taking out a relic and zombies. I played two games where I was just playing him attrociously and I didn't get the unlock. Someone needs to do the experiment. Heal him for a lot but never put mortal to energy form out. I predict no unlock if heal without chaining it to damage.
It seems like he doesn't want to tell anyone else about it but somehow it seems the Scholar discovered the aweful truth that he is a character in a comic book themed cooperative deck game. He stops with the healing and starts destroying his deck for damage. His new version turns card discard into damage so it is more set up to use the iron cards and build up your deck for a big haka style finish (now you will get 2x your hand size in damage which is much more appealing for a KO). Because of the damage angle of new power I suspect the unlock might be more about damage than just healing.
I don't think the new Scholar has broken the fourth wall. What has happened is that he is losing grasp on reality.
Just did a game with Gloomweaver vs. Argent Adept, Wraith, Ra, and Scholar in Silver Gulch. Scholar died to Cursed Acolyte near the end after having played all 3 forms, Proverbs, and Don't Dismiss, and Argent Adept killed Gloomweaver the next turn. No unlock.
If you want the unlock you can avoid the iron form it doesn't help you much and it has been shown to not be needed.
If you want to help the community, play a game without using the energy form but with a high amount of healing, probably that will not be an unlock but I'd like to know whether it is healing a minimum amount or a minimum amount of zapping that unlocks the infinite.
If you just want to go straight to the unlock do a lot of heal zapping, that has yet to fail and is easy to do. The problem is nobody has tried healing a lot while restraining from zapping. (along with beating gloomweaver with scholar down of course)
Just got him. I did use Solid to Liquid and do a decent amount of healing, and I used Flesh to Iron, but pretty sure that MFtE never came out. However, I did use Alchemical Redirection, but it did NOT kill him (Unload did that). I defeated Gloomweaver as part of the same Unload action that downed Gloomweaver.
My theory:
Defeat Gloomweaver after Scholar is incapacitated, Alchemical Redirection must have been played.
Possibly adding in some minimum amount of healing or 1 form being played.
Edit: In all of my previous, failed unlocks, I got multiple forms and TONS of heal zapping (and thus healing), but I feel like Alchemical Redirection was the missing piece.
Certainly if you are trying to have scholar go down Alchemical Redirection will be a good card to play. I wonder if anyone recalls unlocking without having played Alchemical Redirection. One of the earliest succesful unlocks suggested Alchemical Redirection was perhaps not neccesary but the poster wasn't sure. After that it seems like most unlocks do use it at some point, it is an obvious choice if you want him incapped.
I did play the redirection as a part of a game to incap him quick and clean and was surprised to not get the unlock. I avoided healing him because what was the point if he was supposed to get incapped? Thus I guess there is some minimum amount of healing but it probably isn't anything too impressive.
Some unlocks appear to have only moderate scholar healing and considering he has an innate power and a good portion of his deck heals, it is probably pretty easy to hit the mark unless you are actively avoiding the healing.
My attempts definitely seemed to indicate healing was necessary. All my failed attempts trying to play out his deck, even shuffling it, never involved healing to any large degree, as I too thought what was the point of healing if the goal is to incap him. The only real difference in my successful unlock to previous ones was that I used his incapped healing ability a lot, because The Scholar went down a lot earlier than I expected him to and the other heroes were in trouble.
Hi, i just beat Gloomweaver with Legacy, DW Expat, Haka and Scholar. Used MF2E, at least 2 Proverbs/Axioms and innate heals, incapped him with Alchemical Redirection and a Haka Rampage, then killed Gloomy with Haka's Savage Mana. No unlock. I may not have healed Scholar enough HP?
it must be a minimum amount of healing done by Scholar. I redid this same battle but made sure to use Grandpa Legacy and twiddling Scholar who had Solid To Liquid and MF2E out. I didnt keep track of the healing but after I ran out the Scholar's deck and reshuffled, I figured that was enough and had the shooty lady blast the Scholar with a shotgun before Haka killed Gloomy with the Mana of about 12 Zombies, Cultists, Voodoo Pins and Relics.
Didnt use Achemical Redirection but once and non fatally.
Right, so we're fairly certain that The Scholar healing hero targets is probably a thing. The Scholar being incapacitated also appears to be a thing.
No specific cards seem to be important, except perhaps Alchemical Redirection at some stage. We're not 100% certain that Gloomweaver is necessary. Environment definitely doesn't seem to matter.
So I'm going to try a few potential abilities in one go (I hope MigrantP or someone else let's us know if exact values are going to be needed):
Defeat a villain while The Scholar is incapacitated. The Scholar must have used abilities to make heroes regain HP at least X times.
OR
Defeat a villain while The Scholar is incapacitated. The Scholar must have used abilities to make heroes regain at least Y HP in total.
If those aren't it, the same but enforce the villain is Gloomweaver.
Just unlocked by trying to do a healing route
Vs Gloomweaver in Insula Primalis
I did not have any forms in play when Scholar was incapped, and he incapped himself. I did play Alchemical redirection, but it did not incap him.
The only form I played was solid to liquid.
I did play Truthseeker and Bring what you need, but I am not sure if they are important
I think it is about how much healing the Scholar does over the game to Hero targets.
I did eight whilst he was incapped, and more with Proverbs and Axioms, not sure how much more....
I would think we are looking at around twenty as the target number.
So my guess is
Defeat Gloomweaver whilst the Scholar is incapacitated. The Scholar must have healed 20 points of damage to hero targets or more over the course of the Match.
You are so very close, and those instructions will indeed unlock The Scholar of the Infinite. However, it's not the fully exact condition.. I wonder if there are other "recent powerful adversaries" that might be involved..
Hey people. I don’t really post that much anymore, but I got curious on Scholar’s unlock, and I was able to get him unlocked.
Unlock successful.
Gloomwaver - normal
Final Wasteland
Scholar
Nightmist
Argent Adept
Cards Scholar played:
Bring What You Need - used the power
Mortal Form to Energy x2
Proverbs and Axioms
Transmutive Recovery x2
“Get out of the way!” x2
Keep Moving
Alchemical Redirection
Based on the reporting of others, I suspected a Prime Warden needed to be in the same game. Nightmist is Dark Watch, but Argent Adept is Prime Warden.
Hmmmm. So it would seem then that someone else needs to be defeated first.
Who would be fitting for that?
I don't think it's a defeating some one first as migrants said that those instructions would unlock, so I think that it seams the exact conditions are more general than having the scholar incapped vs gloomy after healing 20hp. I think that gloomy isn't the only villain that can unlock the scholar varriant. As for who, maybe it has to be a villain who has relics, like apostate perhaps? I almost wish I hadn't unlocked him so early so I could try and test this.
Ahhh - Good thinking! Perhaps Apostate would fit the bill - He is certainly the magical sort - Akush'bata and any of the villains from Infernal Relics have the Magical, powerful vibe too, and would be recent, from the most recent expansion.
Lets try
Defeat any villain from the Infernal Relics Expansion with the Scholar incapacitated. The Scholar must have healed 20 damage to Hero targets over the course of the match.
Defeat a hero?
Yup - Argent Adept has it coming!
Edited :P
I do not recall destroying a Gloomweaver relic. It was very low, like maybe 5 HP left, but then I KOed Gloomweaver directly via Nightmist's Investigation power redirected via Amulet granted via incapped ability. I could be wrong, and I did not record that part in detail.
I got it against gloomy with loads of healing 2 M2E and one S2L. Argent adept was there used bring what you need but not truth seeker. Used alchemical redirection to accelerate my downfall. I had already done all those in a previous game but i had not taken the time to beat miss info then so i would say it might just be what was missing in the steps.
Edit it was a damage victory and third oarty member was ra in atlantis. Kraken victory to be exact.
Then again there might still be unecessary steps. I wonder if handelabra would consider putting a button to relock unlocked variants.
I unlocked Scholar of the Infinite on my PC this time.
Gloomweaver - normal
The Final Wasteland
Newest Legacy
Argent Adept
Mr Fixer
Bunker
Scholar
I only played Mortal Form to Energy. I healed 15 HP in the game. I think I was under 10 and healed back a bit, but I cannot recall exactly. Scholar was KOed by New Jersey Devil from a Alchemical Redirection. Gloomweaver was KOed from Atomic Glare via Scholar’s incapacitated ability.
It’s strange that I am having problems unlocking him on my work laptop now.
I played Truth Seeker (I did not play it during my unlock notes), but others seems to have played it and unlocked the variant.
I’ve discarded probably around 7-9 card each game that I’ve unlocked him.
I’ve healed 15 or more with Mortal Form to Energy in play, and I’ve dealt 15 or more with Mortal Form to Energy.
Perhaps the issue is self-healing or team healing? I think my failed sessions was healing a lot from Legacy and Fanatic and less self-healing.
Read MigrantP's comment and then the one above it.
How about this:
Defeat a villain that has a relic in their deck while Scholar is incapacitated. Scholar must have healed 20 points of damage to hero targets or more over the course of the match.
OR
Defeat a villain from the Infernal Relics expansion while Scholar is incapacitated. Scholar must have healed 20 points of damage to hero targets or more over the course of the match.
I healed 20 for Scholar in all of my games...but maybe not 20 for other heroes from Scholar. Gonna play with that.

Got unlock, used almost every card, had scholar kill himself with proverbs and axioms. Had bring what you need and truthseeker in play
Relic victory. Only had two types of elementalsome in play (two flesh of ironew one turn, then played elemental realignment. Then had solid to liquid in play from don't dismiss anything )
idk if it helps, but here is my info
Hey guys. Just poking my head in briefly to say I've got it. Requirements are: Heroes win with Scholar incapped in a batle vs. Apostate or Gloomweaver after healing at least 20HP. Nothing else matters.
Vs. Ennead x2, in Silver Gulch and then Primalis: Scholar healed 25+HP before being incapped (once by heroes, once by villains), and heroes win the game. BWYN but not Truth Seeker were played, only L&E forms used. No unlock.
Vs. Apostate, in Silver Gulch: Scholar healed 29HP before being incapped by Legacy. No cards in play at incap, neither BWYN nor Truth Seeker were played (Redirection was). Only L&E forms used. Unlocked.
So it's not just any IR villain. Ennead did not give the unlock under near-identical conditions to those in which Apostate did.
Cheers!
Rabk is correct. Here is the official condition:
Defeat either GloomWeaver or Apostate with The Scholar incapacitated. The Scholar must have healed hero targets for at least 20 HP in total.
Hooray! Thanks, Rabk!
huzzah, I'm just glad I was able to help, either by disproving realms of discord or pointing people towards relic including villians.
Yep, it was a team effort all around!
I wonder what signifigance both Gloomy and Apostate have with Scholar story wise
They both are Infernal creatures and they do both show up in his deck. Gloomy in Truth Seeker and Apostate in Offensive Transmutation
Something to do with ley lines?
They have both been houseguests on his boat and overstayed their welcome.
Gloomweaver especially – he's always bringing the mood down.

Seems fairly straightforward. In the storyline (as written by Christopher), Gloomy and Apostate attack the ley-lines, which draws the normally copacetic scholar out into his infinite form.
Glad it is done - I was so close:P Well done to Rabk for doing the legwork and getting the final condition!
