It was only a matter of time, wasn’t it?
After redirecting damage to a different target with an ability that deals damage to multiple targets, can you send the next instance of damage at the first target? (Known answer for EE, but it’s left unaddressed in the DE rules so I figure I’ll ask anew.)
Are Reactions limited to one reaction ability per instance of damage? Or can one instance of damage trigger multiple reactions?
Mad Bomber Blade’s setup specifically says to shuffle the environment deck until no villain cards are on top. Is it implied that you also do this when he puts a new card in the environment?

No, but to use another reaction requires the target would still be dealt damage after the first reaction was used.
Only during setup.

Depends upon the wording. Like Throwing Knives I’d say you could hit the same target that damage redirected to. For Scherzo of Frost and Flame which specifies a different target you can’t.

Thanks, Powerhound!
For the redirection, I was thinking more about Moonfall Baron Blade. If I use the Throwing Knives on him and he spawns a Minion to redirect the first damage to, can I target him again for the second hit?

My big DE question, which I’ve already sent into the podcast:
If cards that are no longer in play have no ongoing effects, then what about a card that says destroy X then do Y, if it targets itself (example: Omnitron’s disintegration beam). Do both things happen at once, or does the destruction stop the second effect?

If you destroy Disintegration Ray as part of its text then you don’t play a card. As it’s no longer in play for If you do text.

I haven’t played a lot yet to come up with questions, but there is one thing I think is right, but that if I was playing EE would be wrong.
When you are taking damage from multiple sources a turn, and you have a reaction, can you choose which damage to react to? I think the answer is yes, so that you could ignore the first source, and react to the second source to be more effective. But it feels wrong, since in EE when a card had the potential to be triggered, you had to use it the first time or you couldn’t use it that turn at all.
More specifically, on Bunker’s Emergency shielding, it is only destroyed it the source that activates it still deals damage with the -2, correct? Not if you take further damage that turn. I’m thinking of something like Blade playing a card that deals damage, then dealing damage again at the end of his turn.

You get to choose when to use the reaction on a turn but only once that turn. So you can decide whether the first or last attack against your hero is the one you use the reaction on.

You changing “first or second” to “first or last” I think is confusing me.
You can react to any source of damage on your turn, but you can only react once per turn. Correct? So if I am being hit by three citizens of the sun, I could choose to react to A, B or C, but I can only react once.
Sorry If I’m repeating what you said, but I’m just tired enough that I want to confirm.

If you are going to take damage from A, B, and C you can choose to use the reaction against any one of them but only one of them. So if your hero has only one reaction in their play area and chose B to use your reaction against then your hero took the damage from A and doesn’t have any reactions left to use against C.

Played just my second game of DE tonight, trying to teach it to others. For Bunker, when he’s loading Ordnance he puts the top card of his deck face down below the armament, correct? I assume so because otherwise it would be “reveal top card” and place under.
Likewise, once you destroy cards this way you choose the order, yes? That means you pick the way they stack in the trash, at which point you can see them face up. Hope I’m not overthinking this.

In the FAQ section of the rulebook, it says you may look at cards underneath other cards at any time. So when Bunker puts the top card of his deck under an ordinance, you can see what card it is, and when you destroy them, you can pick which ones to destroy.
This helps if you’re playing 1st Appearance Bunker, since he can Salvage item cards with his base power. If any wound up getting used as ammo, he can get them back.

It doesn’t really matter what order they go into your trash. At least so far, there’s nothing that affects, say, the top card of your trash, if I’m not mistaken. Salvaging can happen from anywhere, and if you shuffle your trash into your deck, well, it’s shuffled. Point is, don’t overthink it.

Thanks for the reminder! I’m so used to the app, I think I may be getting “underneath a card” (La Capitan) crossed with “face down in a play area” (Wager Master, Santa Guise, Chokepoint). I can’t exactly recall what the circumstances have been when I could only view card backs. Sounds like Definitive Edition has cleared this up!
That was my thought for the core set as well. Not that I’ve played through everything yet. I guess I was thinking of something like the Resource Recycler in Omnitron IV that would put equipment or a device back in play from the top of trash. We’ll see if that remains when we get there!

And, huh. I wonder why that is an effect on the Disintegration Ray. Right now, all I can think of that effect achieves is slightly depower one Tachyon card.

Hello!
Like @WalkingTarget pointed out, it affects Salvage, but it honestly still seems helpful in most instances. Maybe I’ve been playing Tempest too much, but Collect and Discover seem to be more common than Salvage. But it also rarely activates (maybe 2 or 3 times a game if you’re doing well?), so I think it’s more of just some cool flavor.

I’m still working out how exactly Reactions work. Do they react before the damage is done? ie. how that EE Mainstay card works? If it’s “do damage to something”, can you kill the think trying to attack you such that you don’t take the damage? Or play a card that reacts before you’re even hit by the damage (if that’s your reaction) and destroy the attacker before it hits you? Or must you take the damage first before reacting?

Reactions happen before the damage is done. You can take out the attacker, or make it so they cannot deal damage, and then you wouldn’t actually take that damage.
There is debate on whether you can react if you won’t be taking damage, however…
But all may be revealed in the Letters Page tomorrow!
Edit: “Taking damage” isn’t the correct phrasing, you’re technically being “dealt damage”. But the debate is whether you can react if that dealt damage wouldn’t end up “reaching” you. As in, if modifiers would prevent it before you do anything.

Seeing as rules questions are unlikely to be answered on the podcast (Who can blame them? That makes for terrible radio), I wonder if our best and most efficient route is to collect all the questions we want answered, and presenting them to Christopher all at once (if possible). If we were to do that, what questions should be asked? I’ll start:
When does “would be dealt” take effect? Is that considered before or after modifiers and immunity are applied to the damage?
Can we get a clarification on how effect happen within a particular phase? Is it correct to interpret them as first Static effects (effects that are written on a card without the possibility of ignoring them), then Normal effects (what the phase normally allows you to do), and finally Optional effects (effects that you get to choose whether or not to do)?
On cards that allow you the option of choosing one thing or another, do you have to be capable of doing that thing in order to choose that option? Or can you choose to attempt something even though nothing will come of it?
What is the full definition of a “Hero” in the game? Does this differ from a “Hero character”. And if so, how?
Are “and” effects sequential, like they were in Enhanced Edition? Or can they be done in any order? (i.e. “play a card and draw a card”)
What other questions are there that need answering/clarification? And do any of the playtesters have a way of getting these questions to Christopher in a way that will be beneficial to everyone? Or is anyone “authorized” to speak on his behalf about them? Don’t want to waste anyone’s time here, but I think a lot of us would sleep better if we got some answers.
Either that, or some kind of official FAQ on the site.
I’ll add in:
-If a card destroys itself and has another action written, does the other action come before, after, or at the same time as the destruction?

I’ll add in:
-If a card destroys itself and has another action written, does the other action come before, after, or at the same time as the destruction?
This is a good question, but is already answered in the rule book under the Destroy term:
Destroy: A destroyed card goes to the trash of that card’s deck, unless something in play says otherwise. When a card is destroyed, resolve any effects in play that occur when the card is destroyed, remove any tokens on or placed by the card, and place the destroyed card in the trash associated with its deck. When a target is at 0 HP, it is destroyed.
So it happens as it is destroyed, before entering the trash. Doing that effect is part of destroying the card. Unless I am misunderstanding your question?

The Adhesive Foam Grenade question.
When in Atlantis and the Crucible tries to play an environment card, but Adhesive Foam Grenade prevents it, do you put the card back or discard it.
It was mentioned that an errata might come out where Adhesive Foam grenade always discards the top card when it prevents a play, is this true, and how does this affect fights like Mad Bomber Blade? Because this changes the usefulness of this card massively in that fight.
The Unity Flash Forge Question
Pretty sure we know this one, but it says to "Either discover 1 Mechanical Golem card or discover 1 Item card. " Is this meant to be that you decide which you are looking for, then discover for that type, or is this meant to be that you discover the first of either type that you run across?
Excavation makes this seem like the first, since it reads “Discover X relic and/or Ongoing cards” but best to be certain.

Do reactions work how I think they work? For example, Bunker’s armour that reduces two damage, he can really tank with that, eh? Once per turn he can just ignore a 1 or 2 damage hit, indefinitely until it’s destroyed-- that’s strong! Feels almost too strong!

I do want to say, on the subject of DE heroes being very powerful or the game being too easy…you can do events and advanced mode texts at the same time. And in games of EE i never felt the need to do challenge modes for the majority of villains, here they seems like an actual useful lever to lean on if you want a bigger challenge
Everyone thinks baron blades a chump till he’s milling two free cards a turn and has his soliders diving in front of him to buy time.

And that’s how I got my 1st and so far only loss in DE.
Also as good as Bunker’s reaction is, I think his Heavy Plating in the old game was more powerful. The shielding can block the occasional small hit or one big hit, while the Heavy Plating reduces all damage to him. The reaction is more fun and strategic though.

Saw some comments on the RCR Kickstarter, and it made me wonder about a Definitive Edition rule.
Hey does anyone know where I can find an official ruling about whether, when you reorganize a hero’s area before the beginning of their turn, whether you can change which hero target one of Captain Cosmic’s constructs are next to?
Reorganizing your area does not allow you to change where cards are attached/next to.
A) they aren’t in your area, they are in the other area, so they don’t get reorganized on your (captain cosmic’s) turn, but on theirs
B) this is mainly to change what order things activate, not to move items or ongoings to different play areas.
So I have no problem with a Construct being locked onto the same target until it’s destroyed, but what’s this part about reorganizing a hero’s play area? I can’t locate this in the rulebook. I know the EE app has cards activate in the order played, and there’s no changing that while they remain in play. Does DE let you move things around? I’ve only played about three games, and have just been going left to right each time.

Reorganizing your play area is not a thing. I’m not sure what that comment is talking about.
I mean, you can organize your cards in whatever way makes sense to you, but cards still activate Start Phase and End Phase effects in the order they entered play, which most players just organize as left to right. And once a construct is next to a target, it can’t be moved to a different one.
I know there was some confusion about the Vitality Conduit construct, which reads “Start Phase: The hero next to this card regains 2hp”. The VC activates on the Start Phase of the hero it’s next to, not Captain Cosmic’s start phase, if we extrapolate from how Augmented Ally is worded.
Edit: Nvm, I was not aware the rulebook had been updated or the Christopher showed some of it on the stream. Whoops
During Hero turns, before the start of any phase, players may reorder any non-character cards in their play area before resolving them from left to right.
But I think the answer to the question is no, constructs cannot be placed on new targets; that is only when they are played. Some people want this interaction to be the case, but you should also almost never end up with a targetless construct.
I believe Christopher was also asked a question about the rule update in the post-Kickstarter livestream, where he pointed out that it is basically a living document and will be updated as necessary.

Thank you! Either I overlooked that in the rules, or it’s an addition since printing. That adds an extra element of strategy.
I didn’t even really mean to bring up the Construct part, as I knew those don’t change attachments once played. It is good to have the clarification that Start Phase effects occur on the respective target’s turn.

It is definitely an addition. I am particularly curious to see how it’ll affect playing the RCR heroes, because it doesn’t affect the core heroes all that much. And the timing of the change seems to indicate it was caused by playtesting of the RCR heroes, but that might just be me overthinking it.

Christopher actually came up with it shortly after the core set Kickstarter. He didn’t like how fiddly some order-of-play decisions were, and he noticed that, in practice, a lot of newer players were just organizing their play areas however they wanted anyway.

Huh. Well that’s going to make playing Benchmark pretty interesting when we get him again. He no longer needs a dedicated card for reorganizing his play area.
I kinda like the change. Most of the time the order doesn’t matter, or the gains made by reorganizing the order are pretty minimal, but for the times it does matter it’s impossible or annoying to change. If people are just going to change it anyway, might as well make it official.
Just need to make sure people know you can’t change the order of the villain and environment play area, because there it definitely does matter.
Though if you do want to use this to optimize things to your advantage, here’s some situations I can think of where it helps.
Unity - you can reorganize your bots to optimize their damage, like having Platform/Arsenal Bot take out something that’s protecting the main villain before your Raptors take a bite out of the boss.
Bunker - make it so Expendable Power Bank/Recharge Mode activate before Gatling Gun, so you can load it up more before firing it.
Haka - if you have Dance in the Fray, a Haka card, and some other ongoing that destroys itself in your start phase (Knock Heads, Tiaki Defender, etc.) you can have the ongoing destroy itself before the Haka does, so the damage still benefits from the damage boost/irreducibility.

@Christopher Looking for official clarification here…
The Turn Sequence section of the rulebook says “DRAW PHASE: That Hero may draw the top card of their deck. If that Hero did not play any cards during their PLAY PHASE and did not use any powers during their POWER PHASE this turn, they may draw 1 additional card.”
Four scenarios:
It’s Bunker’s turn.
1.1. Bunker takes his Play Phase and chooses not to play any cards.
1.2. Bunker takes his Power Phase and chooses not to use any powers.
1.3. Bunker takes his Draw Phase.
It’s Bunker’s turn.
2.1. Bunker takes his Play Phase but has no cards in hand.
2.2. Bunker takes his Power Phase and chooses not to use any powers.
2.3. Bunker gets his Draw Phase.
It’s Bunker’s turn.
3.1. Bunker skips directly from his Start Phase to his Draw Phase using the effect on Bank Heist in Progress.
3.2. Bunker takes his Draw Phase.
It’s the Wraith’s turn. First Appearance the Wraith is incapacitated.
4.1. The Wraith uses the incapacitated ability “1 Hero takes their DRAW PHASE.”
4.2. Bunker takes his Draw Phase.
My reading is that none of these cases involve Bunker playing any cards during his PLAY PHASE or using any powers during his POWER PHASE, so all of them should result in him being allowed to draw 2 cards during his DRAW PHASE on that turn.
If I’m wrong, please help me understand why.
I know you said in an early gameplay stream that out-of-turn DRAW PHASEs (e.g. scenario 4) don’t give the second draw, but looking at the rulebook, I can’t see any reason for that to be the case (especially when other turns that have a DRAW PHASE but no PLAY PHASE or POWER PHASE, like scenario 3, do give the second draw).
If this is a change, or the rulebook needs to be updated, I can live with that… as long as the rulebook does get updated so there is a single centralized source for The Rules.
I’m sorry if this is rude or needlessly aggressive. I’m just concerned because I got the impression that “in order to play the game correctly in an edge case, someone needs to have listened to everything you’ve ever said about it online” is part of what DE wants to move away from, but this distinction is currently pushing back towards that territory.

This is in the RCR rulebook FAQ (bolding the question to make it clearer when the answer starts)
If I have the option to use multiple powers during my POWER PHASE and only use one, do I get to draw extra cards during my DRAW PHASE?
No. You draw one extra card in your DRAW PHASE when you don’t play any cards on your PLAY PHASE and don’t use any powers on your POWER PHASE during your turn.
If it’s your turn and you skip or are made to skip your PLAY and POWER PHASES, you still draw 2 cards for the DRAW PHASE. However, getting an off-turn DRAW PHASE doesn’t let you draw 2 cards.

Small question regarding Phase timings:
If something says “until the [phase]” and it occurs during that phase, does it expire immediately, at the end of the phase, at the start of the next applicable phase, or at the end of the next applicable phase?
The key example of this: Cosmic Omnitron. Its Start Phase says, in part, “Activate the FABRICATE of each Villain card in play”. Meanwhile, Adaptive Plating says “FABRICATE: Until the Villain START PHASE, after Omnitron is dealt a type of damage, Omnitron becomes immune to that type of damage for the rest of the turn.”
So my question is, in this case, after the FABRICATE procs (and assuming it isn’t destroyed) will it last:
A. essentially no time at all
B. until the end of the Start Phase
C. for the rest of the round
or D. until the end of the next villain turn’s Start Phase.

Pixie Knights!
The card deals damage, then if that damage was “redirected, reduced, or prevented,” do something.
What’s weird is that the DE core set rulebook arguably describes “immune to damage” in a way that suggests that it’s not the same thing as “preventing” the damage. Given the rest of the Pixies’ wording, though, I suspect the intent was, “then, if less than damage was dealt to that target, …”
Also: man, I hate those pixies.

Right! If you hit the Pixies with a Hypersonic Assault, then they will trigger their second effect. But my question is, if no damage was dealt because their original target was immune, then do they? It seems like the thematic answer should be “yes,” but because the rulebook seems to separate “immune” and “prevent” and the card text calls out a bunch of things but not “immune,” that there’s an argument to be made the other way.

As it’s worded I’d say if a target was immune to damage then nothing further happens. It probably would be better to have it say if the damage was redirected or less than H damage was dealt.

Is Expatriette able to shoot if she has a gun card out, but no ammo card? The gun cards say you ‘may’ activate loaded on 1 ammo card, so it reads as if the gun power can be used with or without an ammo card.

Yep! Anytime there is a “may”, it is an optional action.

Well, we think we know what The Bear was supposed to be doing, but it sure confused us. Three questions:
Whose villain character cards are in play? Thematically, it sure seems like it should be The Chairman and The Bear. But, in general, Critical Event character cards substitute for the “main” character, and since The Chairman’s setup specifically says to get the Operative, we thought The Bear replaced The Chairman and then there would be no Operative. We’re pretty confident that’s how it was supposed to happen, but just confirming.
Can you “would activate” Commands on a card that doesn’t exist? Say The Bear plays Perfect Human Specimens. The Chairman does not heal because The Chairman is not in play. The Operative does not heal because The Operative is not in play. But then we are supposed to activate Commands on the Operative’s card. One interpretation here is that the instruction fizzles, because there is no game text tagged with “Commands” that we could activate at all. But then it doesn’t make sense for The Bear to have his “Commands would be activated” text. So we decided to play that like “whenever a Villain card is played that includes the word ‘Commands,’ play the top card of the Villain deck.”
Does the Critical Event villain character card share the name of the original villain? I think the answer has been established as “no,” but now I can’t find it. The issue arises here with the Crooked Cop and a couple other cards. When the Crooked Cop says to play a card from under The Chairman, but there’s no card in play called The Chairman, I think nothing happens (as opposed to one of the Underbosses under The Bear trying to come out and triggering The Bear’s attack).
Thanks

The Bear replaces the Chairman, so replace any instance of “The Chairman” with “The Bear.” The Chairman is the main villain card, with the Operative on the side, so any Operative instructions fizzle. This differs from the Fey Court, where the Dagda and Morrigan are equal partners.
Aha! Thanks for finding the FAQ I was too blind to see.
I reread that section on multiple character cards several times, though, and I don’t see how it addresses my particular questions.

Rules question that I’m betting has been answered elsewhere, but I haven’t been able to find.
For cards that are played in other play areas (such as Captain Cosmic’s Vitality Conduit, or any of the Bonds of the Fae Court, Plague Rat’s Infection cards, the travelling relics from the Diamond Mansion, etc.), do the Start/Play/Draw/Power/End Phase texts on those cards activate when the “owner’s” (i.e. what the card back is) corresponding phase goes off, or the play area of where the card actually is?

The play area that they are actually in. It’s not clearly pointed out, but this is answered in the FAQ of the RCR Rulebook, in this question:
It is absolutely clearly pointed out in the core rulebook.

Ah, there it is! I meant for the section I was pointing to, and now it makes sense why that FAQ section sort of breezes past it.

Just asking for some clarifications on Gloomweaver’s Critical Event.
What happens if all non-hero targets are destroyed, but there aren’t H+2 cards under Gloomweaver? Do you just win, or does the soul just float on the table until the Start Phase effect moves it to the recently discovered target?
I assumed you just win, since the rulebook says when there are no villain characters in play you win, unless something states otherwise.
If Fanatic uses Brutal Censure on a target, and later it gets Possessed, is its text still gone? It wasn’t a character when it was initially targeted, but later became one so…
The rulebook explicitly states Characters can’t be buried, but what about being put on top or shuffled into the deck, in the case of Zhu Long’s Shinobi Assassins or Insula Primalis’ Imminent Eruption? If those cards can be put on top/shuffled, what happens to the soul?

You still have the CE character card out controlling the win condition so you should still continue.
The CE is giving it the text not the card that was targeted. So it would then only have the text related to the CE.
For a possessed Assassin it should be player choice as both trigger whenever they would be destroyed. For the volcano, it would still be shuffled back into the deck.

Sorry if this has been asked or is obvious but I’ve had trouble finding it.
If a card is played during the Start Phase that has Start Phase effects, does that new card’s start phase effects also take effect this round?

Yep! The Start Phase is still happening, and it doesn’t end until all Start Phase texts in play have resolved. (The same is true for all other phases—End, Play, Power, Draw—as well, of course.)
Alright, now I have a question. I was playing Fanatic, and used her First Appearance Variant’s Power. I already had Absolution (a Limited Relic) in play. The Power told me to Discover a Relic. So if I reveal another copy of Absolution, does it get “played” (i.e. really go into my hand ‘cos I already have one copy in play), or do I keep revealing until I get a different Relic?
(Thankfully, when we were actually playing, I got the Aegis, so this problem didn’t occur, but I still thought of the aforementioned possibility.)
(Also, I thought that this was clarified somewhere, but I can’t remember where; I checked the core game rulebook FAQ and found nothing.)

You would try to play the card and it would go to your hand. Most often this occurs with Tempest where you play Alien Weather Patterns and come across duplicate limited weather cards. Discover only cares you find a match and not whether an existing limited card is in play.

I’m not looking at it, but iirc it might be addressed under the explanation of Limited cards – when they are already in play, an attempt to play them (via Play Phase or Discover or any other means) sends them to your hand instead.

I have a question and this might have been clarified and it is can you play a card or use a power that part of it cannot be used ie: haka’s first appearance of no target has 3 or fewer HP do you still heal if you use the power or are you unable to use it?

You still can use it and will heal if there are no valid targets to destroy.

Night’s Plutonian Shore was a retelling of the Matriarch story.
The Matriarch’s classic first appearance in the Silver Age of Sentinel Comics was reprised in the late '90s with the “Night’s Plutonian Shore” One-Shot.

Played DE for the first time in months last night. Been so long in between I wasn’t sure I interpreted a few situations correctly.

That sound like I played correctly to everyone? I’m sure I’ve heard this before but it’s kind of a jumble to find information about the game.
