Back in 2016 I decided to take the at the time 3 canonical teams up against every villain on advanced. Now that Harpy and Void Guard are out digitally I wanted to start a new battle of the teams. I'm going to do things a little differently this time and this will involve over 1000 games of Sentinels - so it will probably be a very long time before I finish.

The rules:

-There will be 8 teams so that every hero can participate, the teams will be:

1. Freedom 5: Legacy, Bunker, Wraith, Tachyon, Absolute Zero

2. Prime Wardens: AA, Captain Cosmic, Fanatic, Haka, Tempest

3. Dark Watch: Expat, Nightmist, Setback, Fixer, Harpy

4. Void Guard: Medico, Mainstay, Idealist, Writhe

5. Team Alternate Realities: La Comodora, Visionary, Omnitron-X, Chrono-Ranger

6. Team Revo-Corp: Luminary, Stuntman, Parse, Unity, Benchmark

7. Team Space: Lifeline, The Sentinels, Sky-scraper, KNYFE

8. Team Nature a.k.a Team Guise-n-Palz: Akash'thriya, Naturalist, Ra, Scholar, Guise

-No variants.

-Each villain will be fought once by each team on each difficulty. Environments will be selected at random and held constant for all teams.

-There will be 4 total Vengeance matches per team per difficulty, so that the 4 hero teams can face each villain once. Each match will have a randomly selected fifth villain that will appear in only the 5 hero games. These matches were randomized in such a way that no villain will appear more than twice or less than once per difficulty.

-Matches will be played in random order, though Challenge/Ultimate games against Trickster Kismet or Team villains will be postponed until those modes exist for those villains.

-After each round I'll post the results in this thread and I'll also post what the next round will be.

-Feel free to cheer on your favorite teams!

So will you be doing advanced by default again or will the difficultly be chosen randomly?

All 4 difficulties, so I be facing each villain 4 times per team for a total of 32 games per villain.

Thanks Missingno, that’s super helpful! The Nature team was able to win in large part due to Steady damage from Ra and some really good tanking from Naturalist. Scholar was mostly support and Guise and Thriya just kind of helped out in a bunch of little ways.

RC lost against ulti infiniator but nobody else did?  Huh, you would have thought more people would biff it, plus RC is pretty powerful and heavy on the irrducable damage so it's odd that they were the ones to fail it.

The deciding factor in a number of these games was when Meteor Storm came out, since Infinitor has no Ongoing, Equipment or Environment Destruction. It was never played in the Dark Watch, Void Guard, Alternate Reality, or Revocorp games. Void Gaurd was able to earn a narrow win thanks to Medico being able to heal Mainstay and Writhe. Dark Watch won thanks to Nightmist’s mistform and Alternate reality won by buffing Chrono-Ranger’s damage to Infinitor by 4 and just outpacing Infinitor. Revo-corp came fairly close, but in the end they were just outpaced.

In general, everytime I thought “I’m ok as long as Jail Break isn’t played this round”. Chairman immediately played jail break and I lost hard. The only games I was able to win were the ones where I could use deck control to manage the timing of jail breaks.

Also, I fixed your counts, I think you were missing round 5 or 6.

No I’m pretty familiar with all the heroes. I have less games with the Oblivaeon heroes than the older ones but I know thier decks pretty well from heavy playtesting.

On the other hand, I’m sure there are other players who play more Ultimate mode than I do and are probably more used to how that mode changes the game.

I'm honest to god shocked that RC was the only one to lose to iron legacy.  That team has Luminary and Parse on it, they're kings of blowing up ongoings.  Honestly I'm shocked that team keeps failing in general considering it's got 4 super high power heroes on it.

DA

Yeah, theoretically that team is probably the best matchup for facing Iron Legacy. All 5 heroes have ongoing destruction in their deck, with Parse and Luminary being among the best in the game at it. I’ve found Luminary to be really effective against Iron Legacy in the past. I think what’s holding that team back a bit is they don’t really have a good plan B for when things go bad.

For example Dark Watch has pulled off a few wins with Nightmist as the last hero standing including the Iron Legacy match. Prime Wardens won against Iron Legacy thanks to Tempest’s Incap. The Freedom 5 and Void Guard were able to stall for time with healing/damage prevention.

Nature and Prime Wardens won via losing to the odds. Nature did so on the very first turn.

Dark Watch lost to Harpy having no cards in her deck and Freedom 5 lost to Who are you fighting. All other matches ended with regular villain destruction though Alt. Reality had to use Chrono-Rangers destroy a target bounty to circumvent Who are you fighting.

So if I figured everything out right, there should be a total of 130 rounds (1040 games).  Which means at your current rate of 19 rounds per month (which is an average of 5 games per day-wow!) it should take a little under 7 months for you to complete this (putting the end around Thanksgiving).  Of course this assumes Challenge Mode for Trickster Kismet and the team villains is released before then so you can actually do those matches, which I can easily see not happening.  I don't know how your schedule varies throughout the year and if you'll have more or less time in other months, but I'd say this is a pretty impressive pace so far and well within your earlier estimates of how long it would take.

DA
Dandolo

The total round count will be 134:

118 regular villain matches and 16 Vengeance Style.

Of those 10 matches are waiting on GTG since Trickster Kismet and the Villains from VotM still need Challenge and Ultimate modes.

May was a busy month for me and July and August will be as well, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I was able to play more games in June but then slow back down for the following couple of months.

I was getting 114 regular villain matches from (23 regular villains + 6 variants) x 4 difficulties - 2 since Challenge/Ultimate Skinwalker is the same as Challenge/Ultimate Agent of Gloom.  Is there a villain I’m missing?  I assumed you’re not including OblivAeon.

Void Guard had a really unlucky game where there really wasn’t anything they did wrong. Infinitor opened with 5 Manifestations, one more than he needed to flip. Void Guard played some ongoings and equipments to start setting up. Then Infinitor played almost every manifestation in his deck on his second turn and incapacitated all the heroes before they could even get a second turn.

With the exception of Freedom 5, they were all really close matches. Many teams were able to take advantage of Mordengrad discarding Carrion Fields and Cohorts.

Some highlights:

Nightmist in Mist Form allowing for consequence free bird destruction.

Lifeline coming back from 1 HP to 27 HP as part of a huge upset victory for team Space.

Luminary completely shutting down Carrion Fields with Regression Turret and getting a damage boost from Mobile Alert Platform.

Medico just barely keeping Void Guard alive for basically the entire game.

Visionary putting the Mask and 7 birds under Matriarch's deck and using deck control to get her to play Darken the sky 2 additional times afterward.

Turn 1 Strength of the Grave didn’t help either with 5 instances of 8 damage. What probably did the heroes in were 2 really unlucky Vast Followings which brought out Gloomy’s most dangerous Cultists. Interestingly, Ra played imbued Fire round 1 and relics didn’t enter play until fairly late; which makes me think that had the game been standard difficulty instead of Ultimate Nature would likely still have lost.

Yeah you nailed it. Round 1 they took out the MDP, environment played Leaking room.
Round 2 villain played Consider the Price of Victory, Environment played Leaking Room. Round 3, Blade played a one-shot getting 15 cards into the trash… heroes would have lost no matter what at that point but the environment played Pillars of Hercules just to rub salt on the wound.

Dark Watch game wasn’t much better. There was only 1 Leaking Room, but the heroes ultimately lost on an out of turn Consider the price of victory played via Atlantian Font of Power the round before they would have flipped Blade.

Freedom 5 lost to Kismet due to her opening with Lady Luck and a bunch of nasty Jinxs and following up with Inconceivable Obstruction round 2. Environment cards kept attacking and flipping the Talisman which since Jinxs couldn’t be destroyed resulted in massive damage boosts.

The Nature vs. Dreamer game was really close. It actually came down to the Tooth Fairy incapacitating Scholar by forcing him to discard his last card… had he survived that attack, Nature would likely have won.

Yeah Tomb of Anubis made this a rough round. Almost all the teams that won just squeaked by.

Freedom 5: Legacy and Wraith incapacitated.
Prime Wardens: Fanatic incapacitated on the front side. This was the easiest fight though as I focused stalling on her front side so I could draw Cleansing Downpour and heal everyone to full before flipping her. The other 4 heroes ended the game at Max HP after a fight that lasted around 1.5 hours.
Dark Watch: Nightmist was last hero standing. Once she flipped I hid in Mist Form until the environment took out her Projections.
Void Guard: A really rough start. All heroes were quickly in single digits and almost lost early. However, Dr. Medico eventually was able to stabilize everyone else’s HP and Mainstay was able to tank for Medico well enough to keep him active.
Alternative Reality: Omnitron-x was the only hero standing at 2 HP.
Space: Mainstay was the only hero standing. He ended the game at 5 HP but was down to 1 HP at one point.

Round 95 results: Easy and fast wins for all teams.

The road ahead:

At this point I have just 1 match left against each solo villain except Trickster Kismet who is waiting on challenge/ultimate mode. With Team Villains I also need to wait on VotM challenge rules as all 10 remaining matches have at least 1 VotM villain in it.

So I will play the final 29 solo villain rounds now. Then I will add some OblivAeon rounds (haven't decided yet if I want to do 1 randomly selected shield per difficulty or face each shield on each difficulty). Then I'll break until the challenge/ultimate modes are out.

As I finish up each villain and environment I'll post some results summeries. Currently, there are 5 environments which have finished up thier matches (excluding possible OblivAeon matches).

Rook City: 31 Wins - 9 Losses

Ruins of Atlantis: 28 Wins - 12 Losses

Silver Gulch 1883: 28 Wins - 12 Losses

Temple of Zhu Long: 34 Wins - 6 Losses

Time Catacylsm: 20 Wins - 12 Losses (Time Catacylsm was randomly selected to be the only environment to appear 4 times instead of 5).

Oh Nature I figured would be at least close to the top what with Scholar, Akash, and Naturalist in there. Guise and Ra are also pretty good there. PW suffered a bit from the “base form only” rule here as everyone really benefits a lot from their variants, especially AA and Fanatic.

They were probably for things like Miss Info or baddies on ultimate where deck manipulation is required to make them less hellish or something.  After all that team is ultra vulnerable to ongoing wipes and can only stall the deck for 2 turns unless Akash is running with her entire deck in her hand.  Its their only weakness but it's a pretty big one.

Yeah I would have been way off if I tried to predict the outcomes at the start. I probably would have predicted Revo Corp or Freedom 5 in first. Great mixes of Support, Utility, and Damage.

I expected lack of deck control to hurt Nature. I expected only having 4 heroes to hurt Space and Void Guard more... of the 4 hero teams I actually expected Alt Reality to have the best record since La Comodora has so much synergy with Omnitron-X and that team has good deck control from Visionary.

I probably would have guessed something like this as the order.

1. Freedom 5

2. Revo Corp

3. Alt. Reality

4. Void Guard

5. Prime Wardens

6. Nature

7. Space

8. Dark Watch

Legacy was able to tank all the fire damage with Next Evolution + Lead from the Front. But indestructable turn 1 Auto Armor meant I couldn’t effectively damage Deadline and round 2 indestructible Pandemonium Key in a target heavy environment meant once flipped Deadline stayed flipped and removed at least 2 environment cards per round.

Other than Space, Dark Watch has the best area damage of any team plus some of the highest number of ongoing destruction cards. Nightmist playing Mist form early and tanking all hits aimed at highest hero was a big factor. Eventually Setback and Harpy went down and used their incaps to give Expat and Fixer extra power uses.
Also, luck is a big factor. Freedom Five for example had great cards except for the fact that they couldn’t draw ongoing destruction and Maria Helena’s Revenge was played round 1.

Space won with The Sentinels as the last hero standing. Both Sky-scraper and KNYFE have “1 hero may use a power” incaps which meant Mainstay could get 3 blocks per round. The Sentinels were able to chip Miss Info down with their damage dealing one-shots and The Slumbering Serpent helped as well.
Void Guard won thanks to Dr. Medico keeping everyone alive and Void Slave helping keep Clues out of play.

In general, the environment was a huge factor. Freedom 5 had great cards and would have been in position to be competitive; but a round 1 Savana Noctura led to Legacy, Bunker, and Absolute Zero all going down on the second villain turn.

How Oblivaeon will work.

1. I'll use the same shield for all teams for each difficulty - choosen at random, but with no repeats, such that 4/5 will be used between the 4 difficulties... unless Oblivaeon's Challenge rule ends up involving multiple shields.

2. Environments will be choosen at random with no repeats... Time Cataclysm must be used as one of the 20 environments since it will have 1 less use than the other environments once the remaining 10 non-oblivaeon battles are completed.

3. The 5 environments selected for each battle will be used in order.

4. Each team has been assigned 20 thematic backup heroes to be used in order (as eligible). The backup heroes were assigned by assigning each team all variants of their heroes first in release order, and then populating the rest based on theme using each variant exactly once (except Completionist Guise who will only be used for team Nature). Also, I avoided repeats of the same hero's variant on any team other than its own. If I run out of thematic backups I'll start hitting the random button.

Fixer managed to land a hit with Riveting Crane in play. Oblivaeon was on side 1 so there wasn’t much benefit to fighting him or other Scion so in the 1 round opening Fixer created I focused on Voss and did 30ish damage to him. The remaining damage came from Oblivaeon himself and Borr the unstable over the course of the destruction of both Tomb of Anubis and Rook City in the same turn (all heroes were present but immune thanks to True Hero in the end). That turn was the major turning point in the game since it eliminated all the Scions but left no backup environments and OnlivAeon gained 10 devastation tokens since no heroes took damage from Oblivaeon’s end of turn effect or the Oblivaeon Shield.

I'm not sure SubZero Atmospehre is a great play against OblivAeon in general especially with the Battle Zone stuff.  As to whether you had a bug or not you could send Feedback to Handelabra but based off what only a bit of info I can't say one way or the other about what happened.

I tried to send a bug report but got an error for some reason. I will try again later from my PC. Assuming it does affect Oblivaeon’s turn it’s useful specifically for getting rid of the shield as what makes that shield so tough is Oblivaeon can incap your heroes or make you move zones before you get to hos end of turn phase.

Yeah, the major issue’s the teams have been facing are:
-The extra Aeonmen mean more Aeon locus will be destroyed and mean more OblivAeon deck plays. This led to me seeing Temporal Fractures every game giving me 1 less round.
-The ordering of Oblivaeon’s start of turn effects are super inconvenient. First the countdown ticks down (so even if you’ve cleared the Aeonmen with a round to spare you will still fail. Second the Shield is checked. Third the environment destruction occurs (meaning if Aeon Master is defeated this way you already missed the timing for the shield check). At the end of his turn Oblivaeon will play more Aeonmen in both zones so its tough to get another chance.

It was lucky because it let me clear the shield round 2.
Environment played Leaking Room

Nixious End of turn effect 2 instances of damage to 2 lowest hero targets, T-rex bot hit twice. Galvanize + Leaking room results in 8 damage to all villain targets.

Yeah, I agree. OblivAeon has so many moving parts and since there are often many different villain plays in between heroes having a chance to act, luck is a major factor. That said, hero actions definitely does play a large role as well, and there are things players can do to make the odds a bit more favorable.

Really bad luck. Oblivaeon played cards like global devastation and tear through reality on phase 1, which hit really hard with a plus 5 damage boost. Nonetheless the heroes were able to successfully clear the shield. After that, twice, when Oblivaeon had 12+ tokens I moved my team to the other zone only for the scion deck to switch his zone and incap my full team.

Another unfortunate game ending issue. Late in phase 2 the game froze and couldn't be reloaded.

The game was quite possibly headed for a hero win as I had only lost 1 environment so far. Though I was pretty likely to lose 2 more in the next round (13 devistation and the countdown at 1 with Oblivaeon at 60 HP). I had a fresh team of heroes after a full board incapacitation.

I'm going to tally the game as a win since I believe that was the more likely outcome even if it was by no means a lock.
