Oblivaeon Rules Clarification Question

Could anyone help clarify the following please? On page 3 of the rules it says "Select one Oblivaeon shield card and put in front of Oblivaeon", but on page 7 it says "Oblivaeon starts the game with a randomly-selected double-sided shield in play". Which is the intended method, random or not? Thanks for any assistance.

It's meant to be random, but there's nothing stopping you from choosing the shield of your choice, for whatever reason -- preference, variety, ease, etc.
