I see on the Wiki that Heroic Infinitor and Chokepoint have challenge modes now, added since the original pdf document. Also that the language has been changed for Ambuscade from the original pdfs.

My questions:

Where did these additions and change come from?

Are they official?

Is there a challenge mode for Unstable Kismet?

Will the Heroic Infinitor and Chokepoing get the little "story" line that explains the challenge the way the others have?

Will Villains be getting challenge modes?

Will Oblivaeon and his scions get them?

I've been hoping they'd all have them eventually and have been planning to put them all on cards I can slide under the villain card so they show the challenge like an addional box of text and am curious if the set will ever be officially complete before I create them.

Also are there any others that changed like Ambuscades?

What's on the wiki is official and came from the video game implementation which Christopher approved if added and/or changed.  Ambuscade is the only known one to have a major rewording change so far.   We don't have a challenge mode for Unstable Kismet or VotM yet.  As to story that's up to GtG who I assume will release an updated Challenge Mode PDF at some point.   Christopher has said in other threads there will be a challenge mode for OblivAeon but gave no indication of how that will work.

What was Challenge Ambuscade before, and what is it now? I’m curious about why it changes.

It used to be that his Traps were face up in the deck to start.  When revealed they did their thing, got shuffled into the deck face up again, and then played the top card of the deck.   It got changed to this:

  • At the start of the game, turn all Trap cards in Ambuscade’s deck face up.
  • Whenever a Trap card would be discarded, first the top card of the villain deck is played, then the Trap card is discarded.
  • Whenever the villain trash is shuffled into the villain deck, all Trap cards are turned face up.

The reason was that if you prevented Ambuscade from dealing damage you could end up in an almost never ending loop of Traps being played.

I see, I tried it on the app today, and it’s still a little too strong, because one “armed and dangerous” can start a chain reaction that reveals several traps in a row before getting a device, and stacks several extra card plays on top of each other.

I don’t think face up traps should stack a card play, and then he might finally have an appropriate power curve.

I don’t mind him chaining card plays, that’s his mechanic, and if he’s lucky enough to play a quick stim patch into a run and gun several times in a row, that’s fine. He just got lucky.

It’s when I know there’s an additional +3 card plays to wade through, which can each trigger their own run of additional chained plays together that it just gets ridiculous and un-fun.

Just like Advanced, Challenge Mode is not meant to be balanced game play.   I think it's an appropriate and good one to up his difficulty considering he is often a pushover.

Yeah don’t expect any balance from them. Besides, charged attacks going off with a sonic mine or two in play can result in 12, 16 or even more dmg on standard. I’ve lost a couple Ambuscade standard because of that.

Though, I really do like Chokepoint’s challenge mode a lot. She’s extra powerful against heroes that rely on destroying their own things, like ongoings. I thought a game with omnitron U, super scientific Tachyon, Ra, and Skyscraper in the enclave would be doable, but she’s destroyed me twice in a row now. And you’re forced to play her much differently.

Thanks to all of you for your explanations. I look forward to a complete set of these challenges further down the road.
