Foil Heroes: Alternate Art?

I noticed during the Foil Hero Collection unboxing video that nearly all the new OblivAeon heroes and variant cards unlocked during the most recent Kickstarter seem to have the exact same art as was revealed during the campaign. However, it was stated a number of times during the campaign that all the new characters and variants would have new art in the Complete Hero Variant Collection and 5th Anniversary Foil Hero Collection. Here are two examples (emphasis mine):

The 5th Anniversary Foil Hero Collection is a box full of over one hundred hero character cards, all in foil and with new art! It will have not just the hero variants, but all of the hero character cards, including those from the core game and each expansion! [KS main page]

Just to clarify: The Complete Hero Foil Collection and the non-foil Variant Collection will have the same, new card art for the variant hero cards, and not the old variant art. The Complete Hero Foil Collection will *also* have foil hero character cards for all of the non-variant heroes with new art. It will not have foil version of the original art for any of those cards. [comment from GtG on update #17]

So is all the Kickstarter art being used as the "new art" for the Variant and Foil Collections? Otherwise, if the art is the same, I believe there's been a bit of a misrepresentation regarding what we would be getting in those collections. Thanks in advance to the GtG crew for any clarification they can provide.

I'm not entirely sure I understand what you were expecting.  I interpreted those statements to mean that the art appearing on the Variant Collection and Foil Hero Collection cards was art that had never before appeared on a card, and that the two collections would have the same art (except for shininess) on the cards that they shared between them.

That's just not consistent with what was said during the Kickstarter campaign. Here's another example from Update #3:

All of the variant cards we unlock as part of this campaign will be sent to you separately from the collections AND inside the collections, with different art in both places! The only promo this is not true for is the Completionist Guise - he is only available in the Ultimate Collector’s Case, the Complete Hero Collection, and the 5th Anniversary Foil Hero Collection. And he will have different art in the Ultimate Collector’s Case than he does in the Hero Collections.
That statement seems to directly contradict your interpretation. But I know that others have taken that view at various points during the Kickstarter campaign, so I'm hoping we get a definitive answer from GtG.

Oh.  You're talking about the heroes that haven't been released yet.  Am I understanding you correctly?

I see what you mean then about the kickstarter art being the collection art.  I would guess that it's a production time thing - since the collections had to be finished first, they got the first arts for the new heroes, while the second version completed will go on the versions shipping out with OblivAeon.  Which is admittedly not what I think most of us assumed, but not really a failure to fulfil their promises as long as the two arts are different.

I had issues with GTG explaining all this via language which can be rather ambiguous in its interpretation (unintended, I’m sure) instead of proper graphics. I, too, initially interpreted it the way you did. But now see that there’s an alternate interpretation that is consistent with all the GTG has said as well as what has transpired.

“Old art” refers to the card art during its original publishing. Say, Legacy in the base game. Or the original Newest Legacy.

“New art” refers to card recently done just for the 5th Anniversary Collection (art done for Oblivaeon counts as “old art”). So, the Legacy shown in the recent unboxing video.

“Same, new art” refers to “New art”. So cards in Variant collection and 5th Anniversary collection have the Same art, but these are New art compared to the Old (Original) art.

In the case of Harpy, there will be these arts:
‘Old’ Harpy in Oblivaeon box.
‘New’ Harpy in 5th Anniversary box.

In the case of Dark Watch Harpy:
‘Old’ DW Harpy in Oblivaeon box.
‘New’ DW Harpy in 5th anniversary box.
‘New’ DW Harpy in variant collection box.

I believe all the above is consistent with my explanation in the previous post.

In the case of Completionist Guise:
‘Old’ art in Ultimate Collector box.
‘New’ art in 5th anniversary box.
‘New’ art in variant box.

And that would be completely fine with me, although I would agree that isn't what most of us assumed. I just know that it was a question during the Kickstarter that wasn't really answered, and now that we're seeing the same art being used on the foil cards, it would be nice to have confirmation one way or the other. If GtG is planning to use the same art in the base sets, there's still time to have a conversation and see if they'd be willing to change their minds.

@saykhia, I think you and I are on the same page.

Maybe the art you saw in the unboxing and the KS was the "alternate" art for the unreleased heroes, and that the "original" art hasn't been seen yet for this expansion? I have no idea one way or the other, just offering a possible scenario.

I had the clear impression that it was planned like this, but that the "new art" had to be done first because of logistical reasons.

We always knew that the 5th Anniversary Collection would be going out around GenCon, and the OblivAeon boxes would ship later in the year. So, we are getting the “new” art versions of the OblivAeon heroes before the “standard” versions that will be in the retail game box.

In that case, it makes sense to me that Adam would draw the art they need earlier before he does the art they need later - so the foil unboxing video shows art that matches the Kickstarter promotional materials. My hypothesis is that sometime around December we will see new (to us) “standard” art for, say, Luminary.

I also read it initially as it would be different art in all 3 places - the variant collection, foil hero collection, and in Oblivaeon itself.  While 3 different art versions of the new heroes would be cool that would be a lot.  Either way I am still excited to be getting all the promos I am missing shortly.  It will change up my games considerably.

It is just two sets and if you look at the campaign you can tell that's the case.    They have their section about the variant pack and then right after about the foil hero set.   In variant section they show an original and the new art and then in the foil section should that same new art.

I didn't even notice that during the video, but you are right that it is the art we've already seen.

I'm sticking with some of the others that the art in Oblivaeon itself will be different, but that also wasn't what I was expecting during the kickstarter.

I think there was discussion though that Ultimate Collector Guise would not end up with any alternate art, because the requirements to get him made that odd. I could be mistaken in that rememberance though

You might look closely at Completionist Guise from the video and what was shown in the KS page.
