Hey everyone

Perhaps it would be nice to use this thread just for summaries of what's happening in the other thread. I can barely keep up!

If Corncakes is a GTG account then this thread might be a hint that there has been a clue that was missed.

Anyone having fun with the clue hunt should check out notpron: www.deathball.net/notpron

Maybe, but I just take it as a way for newcomers to the puzzle to jump in quickly and get a solid grasp of whats happened and not sift through the main thread.

*Fan Girl Squeee*

We getting Pinon in the last expansion!! I love magic users, we need more. But is she going to be a Nightmist promo or a new hero!!

What else have we learned out the next expansion? This just wraps up WOTC.

This just made it really clear that Progeny really hurts. It also confirms that she is helping the heroes as a hero in that one card in Parse's deck. (I am really tired form shoveling snow.). Side note when do Nightmist and Dark Visionary "help" Progeny. This never covered that.

Just give me all the Nightmist story, I love her. So sad she is going into mist form.

The story so far… This is my attempt at a summary. Rather than following the chronological order of discovery, I want to follow what the intent was, with the aim of discovering what the principles behind the puzzles are.

Comics found so far
(These appear to be the goals of this hunt.)

  1. http://greaterthangames.com/genocidal
  2. http://greaterthangames.com/982354617 (image name: 716453289, reversed)
  3. http://greaterthangames.com/harbinger
  4. http://greaterthangames.com/421234220
  5. http://greaterthangames.com/oddallies
  6. http://greaterthangames.com/100263350
  7. http://greaterthangames.com/omnitronu ; straight version of cover at https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CZv_LdZWAAAu35F.jpg:large

They appear to alternate between comics where the clues are a word, offering a cover and a summary of the story, and comics where the clue is a number, giving a snippet of the action.

Other key pages

Getting to Genocidal

Genocidal to 982354617

  • The barcode on the “genocidal” comic reads “982354617” in text. (The barcode itself appears to be deformed to me.) (DocBrown)

982354617 to harbinger

  • The 982354617 comic clues us to play three Mega Computers in Megalopolis, which we had actually already done by accident.
  • Playing three Mega Computers in Megalopolis gives us an “intervene” page, also linking to the “replaceme” page: http://i.imgur.com/G2seRZ7.jpg (Kratos13)
  • The screens shown on the intervene page come from specific cards: Scion of Blight, Diplomatic Envoy, Beginning of the End, Eye on the Prize, Retcon, Between the Lines, Don’t Dismiss Anything, Fixed Point, Reveal the Flaws (DocBrown, Donner, VisforYoshi, Chogb001, Julia, mackcrockett)
  • Bunker is eating Flavor Chips in the 982354617 comic. Flavor text of the nine cards is relevant. (dpt, Julia)
  • The pages in the Villains rulebook have different colors, giving a color → number code: yellow=1, blue=2, pink=3, orange=4, red=5, brown=6, grey=7, white=8, green=9 (arenson9)
  • The screens are colored on the “intervene” page, (bluedarky)
  • Reading off these number positions from the flavor text gives “formofthe”, which completes to “harbinger” (mackcrockett)

Harbinger to 421234220

  • The initial letters in the first paragraph of the Harbinger comic spell out “base eight” (VisforYoshi)
  • The printed number on the Harbinger comic read 716453289, but the bar code is 71645328, missing the 9 (DerpTheBugbear)
  • Converting 71645328 to octal gives 421234220 (brettwo, DerpTheBugbear, kitmehsu)

421234220 to oddallies

  • The 421234220 comic references the previously posted Freedom Four Annual #1, which appears to now have 9 different modified versions at http://greaterthangames.com/downloads . Apparent original can be read page-by-page at http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.com/comic . (DerpTheBugbear, BlueHairedMeerkat, brettwo)
  • The differences are Tachyon’s bedside clock and a letter appearing behind Legacy (brettwo, dpt)
  • The bedside clock reads OLSDALEDI (brettwo, others)
  • The letters behind legacy read RAILFENCE (dpt)
  • There is a railfence cypher (BlueHairedMeerkat)
  • Decoding OLSDALEDI by a 3-row railfence cypher yields “ODDALLIES” (brettwo)

Oddallies to 100263350

  • The first letters of the first paragraph of the Oddallies comic read “Leet Speak” (jagarciao)
  • The actual barcode on the comic reads 804RD64M3, leet speak for Boardgame (DerpTheBugbear)
  • The last letters of the first paragraph of Oddallies read “Health pts”. (eric.reithel)
  • In the HTML comments for the “replaceme” page, the string “One Two Six Nine Four Nine” appears. 126949 is the BGG ID of Omnitron II. (kitmehsu)
  • In the HTML comments for the “itscoming” page, the number 124185 appears. This is the BGG ID of Unity. (arenson9, …)
  • In the HTML comments for the “421234220”, the number 134393 appears. This is the BGG ID for Eternal Haka.
  • The text below reads 633000/126951. 633000 is leet speak for Geek, and Ambuscade has ID number 126951 on BoardGameGeek.com (tyches_coin, BlueHairedMeerkat)
  • Omnitron II, Unity, Eternal Haka, and Ambuscade have 100, 26, 33, and 50 health points respectively. Concatenating them yields 100263350. (BlueHairedMeerkat, kitmehsu)

100263350 to omnitronu

  • Hovering over the 100263350 image gives “uif” (ComradeBubbles)
  • Augustus’ code replaces each letter by the next. Decoding “uif” this way gives “the” (Chromium Man)
  • Omnitron X is speaking in code of Unity’s bots: Turret, Cryo, Champion, Raptor, Champion, Bee / Turret, Turret, Platform, Bee / Bee, Cryo, Bee (BlueHairdMeerkat, kitmehsu)
  • Hit points on these bots are 978281/9931/171 (MrLeRobot)
  • 9782819931171 is the ISBN-13 for The Waste Land, by T.S. Eliot, also seen being held by the Eternal Haka promo (Chromium Man)
  • Encoding “wasteland” by the August Code" gives xbtufmboe. http://greaterthangames.com/xbtufmboe has an animated GIF (Chromium Man)
  • The gif has 25 images, all card art, most (all?) related to Omnitron in alphabetical order. The missing letter is “u”. Images split up at Dropbox - xbtufmboe - Simplify your life (RySmith6, wyken09, grysqrl)

Omnitron-U to ??

  • There is a bar code, which after some clarification decodes to “bitly1QupVMD”. http://bit.ly/1QupVMD goes to the Wikipedia page on Hexadecimal. (Julia, Comrade Bubbles, plus other attempts)
  • Below the bar code is written =232D2D2D.
  • 232D2D2D in decimal is 590163245. (hynju)
  • 232D2D2D in ASCII gives #— . (Trajector, Foote)
  • There is also a grey image that looks like it might be Morse code there. (grysqrl)

Tim Cosing tweets

  • Dec. 21: Preparing. (Villains arrives at GtG headquarters)
  • Dec. 31: It’s landed. (First fans report receiving Villains.)
  • Jan. 25, 8:41AM: Too quick, K. (Kratos13 discovers that three mega computers in megalopolis gives the intervene page, prematurely.)
  • Jan. 25, 12:03PM: You. Find me. (Shortly before CornCakes makes the post starting the thread off.)
  • Jan. 25, 8:15PM: Replace me. (Hint to getting past the “itscoming” page)
  • Jan. 25, 8:16PM: Flavor text. (Hint to getting past the “itscoming” page)
  • Jan. 25, 9:11PM: 123456789 (Nines are significant)
  • Jan. 25, 10:09PM: Well done, G. (Successful decoding of “genocidal”)
  • Jan. 26, 1:36PM: Checkouts. (Clue to keep looking at bar codes?)
  • Jan. 26, 3:44PM: Tut tut tut. (Premature discovery of the morse code video.)
  • Jan. 27, 9:05AM: Bookstore. (Clue to the books puzzle)
  • Jan. 27, 10:36AM: Scan again.
  • Jan. 27, 10:48AM: Reloading.
  • Jan. 27, 11:22AM: Have a gift. (All tweets to make that bar code more legible)

Outstanding mysteries

  • Does the location of “Tim Cosing” in the playtester list mean anything? “Oddallies” is not represented, but he does appear where “genocidal” and “harbinger” would appear.
  • CornCakes said that Tim Cosing appears 20 times in the rule book. We have identified 9 occurences.
  • In the villains rulebook on p. 2, letters spelling out “nines” have shadows. Nine items have appeared many times, but is there some other meaning? (Tindiyen)
  • When some people post the hunted for URLs, they get mysterious strings of numbers afterwards. Do these mean anything? (My guess is no.)
  • The number on the Self-Destruct Sequence in Wagner Mars Base is weird. Does it mean anything?
  • The colors of the Villains page numbers match the backgrounds of 9 out of the 10 villain bios in Villains. (Yak Guardian)
  • The colors in the text “intervene” give the number 679142171 by the color → number code. (Donner, MrLeRobot)
  • The Villains rulebook has a GtG die with a 4-pip face rather than a 5-pip face (RySmith6)
  • If you rearrange “Tim Cosing” according to the “716453289” code, you get “it’s coming”. Was this some alternate entry point? If so, I don’t quite see how. (jorcbrow)
  • Tim Cosing posted a video with multiple-level encoded Morse code, leading to the number 918273645 (Estelindis)
  • We very quickly went from the 25 images at http://greaterthangames.com/xbtufmboe to Omnitron-U. Do the specific cards chosen there have significance for later?

Apparent red herrings

  • The QR codes go to a strange URL, sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com, but you can drop the “sentinelsofthemultiverse” part and get to the same places.
  • The other playtesters in the Villains rulebook are on the official list posted in the playtesting forums (bessyrocks12)
  • The “lorem ipsum” text at the end of the modified Freedom Four Annual #1 appears to be meaningless, like most Lorem Ipsum text. But why is it there? (Estelindis)
  • The Ambuscade bio on the web site and the bio as posted at BGG differ in various ways. (bullfroggy95)
  • Sending the TimCosing user on the GtG forums does not yield anything useful. (BlueHairedMeerkat)
  • The TimCosing account on the GtG formus has the e-mail address “TimCosing@secrets.shh” (?)
  • On the 100263350 page, “Argh” and “no” are bolded. Encrypting them with Augustus’ code gives “BSHIOP”, an anagram of “BISHOP”. (cmschex)

I can't edit the quote of my post, so here's it in full and updated:

I had a go at a summary post: So CornCakes posted this thread, about how Tim Cosing is listed twenty times as a playtester (he's actually only listed nine times). Matchstickman solves the anagram - It's Coming.Comrade Bubbles finds the Twitter account: www.twitter.com/timcosing

Powerhound finds that the QR code on the front of the Villains rules leads to what looks like the Replacements page, but is not... (http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com/replaceme). Powerhound also points out that CornCakes is a fake account, from the same hometown as the Scholar.

Donner points out that the above link is a different website, and that logging in there doesn't work. dpt replaces 'replaceme' with it's coming: http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com/itscoming. arenson finds the number 142185 embedded in the middle of the source.

Tindiyen suggests that maybe we need to find " the worst part between what you see and what actually is, the only truth now. You shall not feel my bones The protection of the most awful future Indeed...You are not real." in flavor text. grysqrl finds most of the quotes that match, Chogb puts those cards together to spell 'Genocidal': http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com/genocidal

DocBrown puts the barcode from the Genocidal comic in the magic place: http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com/982354617

The Mega Computer stuff in this was actually discovered a while ago by Kratos13; anyway, so an image (https://www.dropbox.com/s/sh5ld7n7fmgm1u0/intervene.PNG?dl=0) can be found in the Steam game by playing three Mega Computers in Megalopolis. A bunch of people identify the cards on the screens, then mackcrockett matches the colours of the screens with pages of the rulebook, uses those page numbers to pull a corresponding letter from the flavor text of the card in question to produce 'formofthe', which he finishes with 'Harbinger': http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com/harbinger

VisForYoshi spots that the left-most letters in the first paragraph spell out base eight. Eventually, brettwo thought to knock the 9 off the barcode and convert the result into octal:  http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com/421234220

Derp spots that the letters page of Freedom Four annual 1 is now in Latin; Bubbles spots there are actually nine versions of the comic online; brettwo spots that Tachyon's clock is different in each, and translates those times into semaphore, giving OLSDALEDI; dpt spots that letters behind Legacy change between the comics, and spell out railfence; Meerkat suggests a Rail Fence Cipher, which brettwo uses to solve the board: http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com/oddallies

jagarciao spots that we need to use L33tsp33k, Derp scans the new barcode and converts it from L33t to English - it reads 'boardgame'. racingstripe finds a weird video of at-least-three-layer-deep Morse code posted by Cosing, is admonished by Cosing, and the video is made private. tyches coin finds that 126951 - the second half of the barcode's number - is Ambuscade's ID on BoardGameGeek, and Meerkat spots that 633000 is L33t for Geek. arenson's 142185 goes to Unity; Sameer finds another one, 134393, in the source for 421234220 which goes to Eternal Haka; eric.reithel spots that the right-had letters in the first paragraph of oddallies spell out 'Health Pts'; kitmehsu finds another one (126949, Omnitron II) in replaceme; Meerkat strings their healths together to get http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com/100263350.

Chromium Man figures our what an Augustus Code is, MrLeRobot suggests it might be something to do with the health of the pictured bots, Chromium spots that said number is the ISBN for The Wasteland by T.S. Elliot, Meerkat Augustus shifts 'wasteland' to get http://sentinelsofthemultiverse.greaterthangames.com/xbtufmboe. 25 cards and a lot of Omnitron; grysqrl notes that there's a card for each letter of the alphabet except 'u' and finds http://greaterthangames.com/omnitronu.

Comrade Bubbles spots that the scanned barcode links to the Wikipedia page for Hexadecimal. Foote converts the number under the barcode from hex to #---, Trajector spots a connectino to issue numbers, somebody (give me a name and I'll credit them, but can't be bothered to check right now) spots the card names Prophetic Vision, Take Down and Twisting Back Alleys in the Omnitron-U text, and Rysmith6 takes the issue numbers from those cards' flavor text (using the one from Combat Stance for Twisting Back Alleys, I think?) to get http://greaterthangames.com/201128190.

grysqrl associates the three bolded MP phrases with mp3, finding https://greaterthangames.com/201128190.mp3. A bunch of people pull this apart and identify some songs from the video game, leading to grysqrl pulling an acronym from their respective decks: https://greaterthangames.com/timevtime.

Looking at the two strings of letters got from scanning the barcode and from beneath it, brettwo used a reverse alphabet cipher to produce 'firstnine' and 'finalnine', and sees that the first nine and final nine letters of timevtime are 'five minutes in seconds'. bobbertorile does the maths, gives us https://greaterthangames.com/157784760.

Foote finds ascii art in the source of the above page. It spells 'ftadamant': https://greaterthangames.com/ftadamant.

GeekInsight spots that the first letter of each sentence in the first paragraph spells out 'ascii code', carnilius notes that translating the colours of the word 'timelines' (below the comic) gives the query string for https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OykdjzneU48 (the aforementioned Morse Code video) which racingstripe (I think) already translated to give https://greaterthangames.com/918273645. More morse. Yay. brettwo got that to say 'playlists', kitmehsu discovered that Tim had a playlist showing one video: https://www.youtube.com/watchv=gVzwYSRnBsQ&list=PLKYaqQYhlmcHvG2cBAU485BdwBxdzPXqE.

MORE MORSE. YAAAY.

As pleased as I am to have my name in the summary, I just want to point out that I only stated what an Augustus cipher was. It was BlueHairedMeerkat that decoded "uif" to be "the". Thanks for doing the summary btw. Now...back to solving!

Don't minimize your contribution! Thinking about 'Augustus' as a cipher is an important step. Similarly when BlueHairedMeerkat figured out that there is a Railfence cipher; I had been staring at the word for a while, stuck.

Wow, holy crap there's been a lot going on - about an extra 300 posts or something in that other thread since I checked yesterday. I think I'll just give up on trying to read it and wait until all the info is revealed rather than try to understand all this complicated stuff with numbers that seems to be going on :D. What's this about Pinion, though? Do we have it confirmed she's a playable character in the final expansion? I thought we weren't getting any more hero decks?

This is partly why I provided the summary, to try to make it more accessible to people jumping in! The current puzzle we're stuck on appears to be relatively self-contained.

What's this about Pinion, though? Do we have it confirmed she's a playable character in the final expansion? I thought we weren't getting any more hero decks?
Nothing's confirmed, but at  https://greaterthangames.com/oddallies we see Lillian Corvus acting heroically, under the name "The Harpy". It's a reasonable guess that this will be part of the final expansion one way or another.

I think the "no more hero decks" thing came from various side-clues around nemesis icons; I'm not sure whether that has been confirmed or not.

It does seem highly possible. Progeny is still around, so I'm guessing this comic is somewhere between Tactics and the final expansion (or slightly before the final expansion). We also know Nightmist lost her ability to sustain her solid form after exerting too much magical power while fighting Progeny, likely after helping and recruiting Lillian.

I hope she keeps the name "Pinion." The comic references "The Harpy," but perhaps that's a title, and not her official hero name. Like "The Dark Knight," or "Man of Steel."

Also, I thought we weren't getting any more (standard) villain decks. I don't remember GTG saying anything about new hero decks.

That, or "Pinion" or "The Harpy" is the name of a Promo of hers, as they did say every hero does get a promo (So I expect the final release has the final promo cards).

I know we've had different characters take on the mantle of Ra and Bunker, but it seems like a stretch to assume Nightmist is acting vicariously through Lillian. Her magical powers were awakened and fine-tuned under Nightmist's tutelage, yes. But Lillian seems to be her own person here.

A promo can make a hero deck be played very differently. I don't think it's a stretch. But we're all speculating here.

Based on Dark Watch Comics listed ont he pages, the recruitment of Lilian (DW 7-12) happens after Nightmist expends her energy (DW 4-6). I'm pretty sure the loss of sustaining her solid form was temporary, at least this time, as she is sold when confronting Lilian.

Also I assumed Lilian was able to escape prision due to the damage caused by Progeny to Rook City, which puts it after Nightmist could not reform on one of Progeny's cards, which name I cannot remember.

Not a summary of the clues, but rather a summary of the story... At least my interpretation of how things went (there are a few gray areas due to story pages not exactly matching up with certain card art).  And who knows, maybe there will be some significance in knowing how things went. If a puzzle ever somehow requires knowing the plot points, this may be useful anyways:

THE PROGENITOR'S SCION AWAITS

Progeny Burrows out from deep within the earth in Algeria. He is found standing motionless, waiting for something.

Prime Wardens approach Progeny, and he attacks them.

A HORROR AWAKENS

[Prime Wardens Vs. Progeny]

Progeny eludes the Wardens, or simply gets bored with them, and burrows into the earth.  He resurfaces near Rook City.

Dark Watch and The Scholar, and possibly a reformed Matriarch go out to Progeny to stop him from entering the city.

THE DESTRUCTION OF ROOK CITY

[Dark Watch + The Scholar (+ The Harpy?) Vs. Progeny]

Progeny defeats and/or pushes back the Dark Watch, and begins destroying Rook City. Nightmist expends her powers and goes into mistform.

The Freedom Five arrive with the aid of The Sentinels and Dark Visionary.

[Freedom Five + The Sentinels + Dark Visionary (+ any Dark Watch members who aren't incapacitated?) Vs. Progeny]

Progeny defeats Legacy. Dark Visionary retreats.  Progeny continues destroying the city while battling the remaining heroes.

Chrono-Ranger arrives via a spacetime portal with Parse and KNYFE.

[Chrono-Ranger + Parse + KNYFE (+ any previous heroes still capable of fighting?) Vs. Progeny]

Progeny, seemingly satisfied with the amount of destruction caused, moves on from Rook City.  He starts making his way towards Megalopolis.

AN UNYIELDING MENACE

Progeny continues making his way towards Megalopolis, Fighting many different heroes along the way.
(card art shows at least a few battles with various combinations of F5, PW, DW, and unaffiliated heroes working together against Progeny)
[mix of PW heroes + Matriarch/Harpy (possibly other DW members?) + Parse Vs. Progeny] (Reveal the Flaws)
[mix of PW heroes including Tempest + mix of F5 heroes including Tachyon Vs. Progeny] (Time of Tribulations)

Progeny defeats most of the heroes, and eventually arrives at Megalopolis.

THE BATTLE FOR MEGALOPOLIS

Legacy has regained consciousness, and rejoins the fight in Megalopolis. Five heroes remain (...that we know of for sure), The Freedom Five.

[Freedom Five Vs. Progeny]

After finally noticing a pattern, and a weakness, the team of heroes enact a plan to defeat the monster once and for all!

After a successful counter-attack, Progeny is defeated!  However, in his moment of defeat, Progeny makes his escape into space.

(I'll probably update this as I get more info, and do more research via card art + flavor text)

While I love the speculation about The Matriarch/The Harpy/Pinion and Nightmist, perhaps we could move that to another thread to keep this one focused on the summary of the ARG Puzzle Hunt for Tim Cosing.  This summary page is really useful for those who can't keep up with the activity in "Whose Tim Cosing" and I'd hate for the relevant stuff here to get buried.

While not a summary, here are some tools that people might find useful

A variety of Cipher decoders

A Binary/Hex/others translator

A Barcode/QR code decoder

Thanks for the summaries, but would the people doing them start a new thread (even better a google doc) to update. It is how to follow new posts here since it always goes to the post you update.

Might be good to use the wiki, as we’ll eventually want it all there, anyway? :slightly_smiling_face:

Both good ideas. I won't have a chance to change the markup on my own summary for a bit (or actually update the summary), but if someone else does that work, I'd appreciate it.

EDIT: I think I would prefer the Wiki, for the reason Rabit mentioned.

There is a typo in the wiki page: the /beginning url is currently spelt /begining (missing ‘n’).

As another resource, here’s a reminder that way back on page, like, 7, dpt scanned in the Villains rulebook and posted it here:

Should be working now. I originally added those links, and of course they didn't work while GtG's site was down.

Everything is up and i added the images. Made it a bit more clear.

Still need someone to add the ways we got to the Sixth Excerpt comic (Cleverest Legacy), the SEventh Cover (Be The Gate) and the Seventh Comic Excerpt (Termi-Nation and the cosmic goo), and into the eitght comic cover (End of Days)

Also, to finish out the Story Summary at the bottom of the page.
