So, I've been building a character for a while, and I'm coming to a conundrum.

So avoid bogging down everyone with needlessly in-depth explanations of how the character's powers work, here's a quick summary.

He can open portals to another dimension, which happens to have such a high concentration of Mana that the environment is literally toxic to humans, even those who use magic. He can also displace parts of his body into that dimension, and for the duration, they are replaced by somewhat grotesque and functional prosthetics that seem like metal. Doing this requires him to channel from that dimension through his body, and over time, he's basically been poisoned from overexposure to mana.

Some of the consequences of this, among other things, are that his physical senses are being dulled. By the time in his story that I'm constructing him, he's begun compensating for his dulled senses with a combination of instinct and experience. This combination is where my problem arises.

For representing this as a power, I'd rather not give him Awareness. His senses aren't expanded or better than your average person, and are arguably worse.

I'm kind of torn between Intuition and Deduction for representing this ability.

Intuition represents that he's trusting his instincts to a fair degree in this, especially when he's acting under pressure.

Deduction represents that he's filling in the gaps in his perception with educated guesses based on past experience.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this that could help me decide? He only really has one slot available for this.

Intuition. Your description for Deduction is still intuition. Even educated guess are still guesses.

First of all, very interesting character. I'd love to learn more about him, considering that mana and alternate dimensions aren't really pre-established things in Sentinels canon. (There are realms and timelines, but not dimensions as far as I'm aware.)

To answer your question, "a combination of instinct and experience" sounds more like Intuition than Deduction to me. Even stuff like muscle memory and guessing based on past experience could be described as Intuition from a narrative standpoint, whereas Deduction I imagine as more of an active trait than a passive one like it sounds like this would be.

Thank you Godai! That's the direction I was leaning.

I am tearing a lot of elements for this character out of other things, notably Fate/Stay Night and other things written by Kinoko Nasu. Avalon started as a thought experiment, and eventually ended up as an interesting character. This is probably my favorite version of him so far.

I actually don’t know much about Nuada Airgetlám, but this character is a possible Avalon. Sounds like I should research Nauda though, and maybe end up making a couterpart to Avalon. I do a little writing on Facebook sometimes, and my characters tend to show up there.
