By my calculations, there'll be a Kickstarter launching very soon now.

And yet... it's quiet here.

Too quiet.

...

*rolls to overcome strange silence?*

I think what you’d mostly missing is the 6 part adventure in the Starter Kit and a Finest Legacy character sheet.

PH
Phantom5613

#27

There’s also the six character booklets as well. The Freedom Five and Unity will have gone through some character changes since then(since a decent amount of time has passed in-universe), so the Starter kit is a good way to get a look at the characters in their ‘prime’ fully active super team forms. Not to mention all the other characters and villains you come across in the adventure itself.

These booklets and the six-part adventure make up a very good portion of the value of the Starter kit, so I’d say it’s definitly worth picking up even if you already plan on getting the core book.

I'm 99% sure they'll all be changed.  Trying to follow the character creation process from the two livestreamed games, most of not all of the Starter Kit sheets cannot be created using the current version of the rules.  In some cases it looks like their HP totals might be the only thing to change a little bit--it's hard to tell without seeing the full rules--but they should all be getting at least some small tweaks.

The big thing in the starter kit is the 6 adventures.  And if you're going with the print versions, the character sheets, even if incorrect, come in shiny booklets.

So, as a non-RPer, I'm still a bit shocked about the price of all of this. People seem more than willing to plop down $59+ for what, in my mind, is just a book. Are all RP systems similarly priced? Why does this book cost more than most board games, which have boards, cards, minis, dice, cubes, tokens, etc.? My questions are out of geniune curiosity, since it's just such a foreign idea to me. I can buy novels that have plenty of thought, time, effort, rewrites, world-building, and more put in to them for $10.

MI

Yep, pretty much.  For one, oversize books like these are expensive to print, and for another, whole teams of people are involved in the writing, development, art, and publication of RPG rules books.  The D&D core rulebooks are $50 each MSRP (though they go on sale for much less) and you need 3 of them at minimum.  Other games' core rulebooks are usually in the $50-$60 range, although some slim ones go down to about $30.  $20 for the PDF is actually quite reasonable.

I'm not a backer yet but hope to be. But what about char creation? I mean some abilities on pregens sound like from a list and others sound made up for that hero yet we can only randomly generate em?

TA
TakeWalker
2019-01-31 14:10 UTC

I've always gotten the feeling that character generation ends you with a series of generic abilities -- deal damage at range, hinder with your min die, etc. -- that you can then use as a framework to design the specific effects that are unique to your hero. So if you had, say, an "Energy Blast" power (I don't know what's in the actual rules, mind), you could make it an Ice Blast for a cold hero, or a Fire Blast for a fire hero. Hinders could range anywhere from sudden blasts of supersonic sound to tangling vines sprouting up from below. It really sounds like there's a lot of room for creativity in terms of power set; all you roll for is mechanics.

I can verify that this price is pretty standard. I have a few different core books for different game systems, and those in the same size(8.5" x 11" with 400+ pages, hardcover w/ presumably full color pages) normally go for $60. Some companies can go lower, like MindWanderer pointed out, but you normally need a set of books to ‘propperly’ play the game.

For example, Savage Worlds Deluxe Edition is a game system that has one ‘core’ book that’s contains all the base rules and systems to play a game BUT has no info for any of their specialty settings like Deadlands Reloaded, Rippers, The Last Parsec, etc. It normally runs for just about $10. To get all the tasty setting info, powers and edges and whatnot, you need to purchase settings books. Depending on their importance they can run around a standard $15-$20. And most of those books run pretty slim/small in comparison, and almost none of them have hardcovers or anywhere near a 400+ page count.

To be clearer, Pinnacle Entertainment (the creators of Savage Worlds) are actively going away from that model, as they’ve lost money on their corebooks for literally years.  And, thanks to the proliferation of third-party settings (and free fan settings for many major IPs), sales for their individual settings aren’t as strong as they could or should be.

The newest edition of SW (called Savage Worlds Adventure Edition, or SWADE) will be around that $40 price point,  Which, for a full-color, hardbound rulebook, is damned cheap.

When they say "comic book setting/storytelling", pretty sure they mean Sentinel Comics setting/storytelling options (street level, cosmic, mythos, mythic, reality-hopping, etc.) and not entirely different styles of publication, like manga.

PL

And even then, let's look at how many other books will likely be ahead of it, given that those themes are already prevalent in the card game:

-- Horror/Occult (Tome of the Bizarre, Gloomweaver, Nightmist, Harpy, Court of Blood)

--Iron Age/Street Level (Rook City Renegades, Dark Watch, The Chairman)

--Cosmic/Space (Cosmic Tales, Prime Wardens, any alien threats)

--GLOBAL/FILTER (Both organizations, The Block, international threats like Mordengrad and Plavu'col)

-- The Void and The Host (self evident)

-- Time-travel/dimension hopping  (Yes, I know that's "not possible" now; I also know enough about comics to know that rule will be in place about as long as someone stays dead in an X-Men series)

That's just off the top of my head, not even counting any sourcebook for the Sentinels of Freedom specifically.

So, even if a manga sourcebook were in the plans, it'd likely be *way* down the list...

I feel like they mentioned a manga adaptaion of Freedom Five in the Metaverse at some point on the Letters Page.

Either way, super-heroes are something of a Ur-Setting, so any good supers game should be able to handle just about any sort of character. I would assume that the rules for Unity's bots could be used for making a Pokemon trainer, and if you can make Bunker or Meurto, you can make a Tokusatsu character.

But in terms of having a horror themed game, for instance, I think really all you have to do is change the "skin" of the encounter. I mean, the spider-bot assault from the first issue in the Starter Set could just as easily been a bunch of demon spiders. And the twists could be darker, where maybe the spiders start to turn bystanders into spider-monsters, and it takes some kind of magical counterspell overcome to reverse it.

The majority of major named NPCs are NOT statted in the Starter Kit…

Effects/interaction but no stats: Visionary, Argent Adept, Fanaric, Miss Information, Anubis, Haka, Tempest

Full NPC stats: Baron Blade, Proleteriat,

The adventure is good - worth the $20… but not as a bestiary/villain archive. Id does, however, show that it’s quite possible to have interactions with mechanics, but without full up stats…

Many games in large single volume format are $60 or even $70 - especially if licensed - so $50 is a decent price.

For comparison on the extreme end… There’s a core rulebook with gewgahs not needed but useful for play, that comes in at £200 or $261 on their website, and the corebook alone is £60, or $79. Note that neither includes the Iconic Characters (not the playtest/living-campaign ones, nor any of the shows’ iconics) - those are extra.

FFG Star Wars has 3 $70 corebooks. Each is fully playable alone, but many options are only in one corebook.

So, a $50 core book is not outside the reasonable range. $35 is pretty low.

Why? high layout quality expected, lots of editing skills required, long development times, low print runs. (Most “successful” RPGs runs are in the low thousands.) based upon other RPG’s I’ve followed, GTG is likely to need 2,000-3,000 units for the KS; print runs start to drop significantly at 4,000 units; often further again at 10,000 units

Plus, most RPG core rules are full letter or A4 size, and often hardcover, usually glossy and 4-color offset.  Shipping is heavy.

Settlers of Catan is just a hair over 2 pounds mass, and around 12 fit in a box. FFG’s Star Wars cores are about 3.8 pounds each, and 20+ fit in that same box. RPGs limit by mass per shipping box, boardgames usually by volume per box.

Fortunately, GTG seems to be fond of Bits-n-Mortar approach: buy the core direct from them or at retail, and it comes with the PDFs. (they aren’t the only ones, either.) I don’t know if GTG enforces the other part: Buy online or used, and you don’t get the PDF with it.

Again from the quicknotes:

  • Lifeline plus most of Dark Watch (Harpy and Nightmist are busy elsewhere) is the definitive fight that takes place in a graveyard. Lifeline is a blood mage and so this doesn't go well for GloomWeaver at all, being a creature of blood magic. Lifeline destroys the body with little trouble. However, there's still plenty of power involved in there that's now freed up. GloomWeaver uses that power to occupy all of the corpses in the graveyard and bursts up as a giant "rotting god". More heroes show up, everybody's taking chunks out of the body, but Gloomy can just grab more bodies, eat them, and regenerate. This is a really gross fight that crosses over into several issues.
  • Doctor Medico, post Void Guard upgrade, spends the fight absorbing the power animating GloomWeaver into his OblivAeon Shard, eventually taking in all of GloomWeaver's essence, imprisoning him - he's no longer an actor capable of influencing events.

Not Cthulu just cuz it’s called Thulish it’s a direct parody of cthulu? It doesn’t even vaguely resemble the thing it looks more like a Mi-go. If any Lovecraft homage thing has tentacles it’s automatically a Cthulu ripoff. Frankly Howard himself always called his setting Azatoth Chronicles. I wonder how he’d feel if everyone felt his work revolved around an Elder God he rarely used.

Lovecraft would most likely be shocked to the point of risking an actual stroke, if he'd somehow learned how culturally relevant he's become today, considering his utter obscurity in his own time. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't complain!

With A little over a week left on the campaign, where does everyone think we're gonna end up with funding ammount?

The amount has steadily been going up, so I think the current streatch goal(Sentinels of Freedom Prelude One-shot) is very likely. And with the '48 hour wave' yet to come, I think we have a good shot to get to the Dark Watch Source book. Depending on what comes after that though, I'm not sure how much farther we'll go. Has to be something REALLY good to get that final push to 350K.

We’re gonna have quite the number of ways to access blank character sheets, aren’t we? First the big ol’ pad of empty character sheets, and now a pdf.

Makes me all the more eager to get my hands on the character creation rules…

I'm a big proponent of providing form-fillable character sheets for rpgs in general, though in this case, it makes me question the worth of providing a pad of 100 sheets.

I mean, I can go to my work-printer right now and print a whole ream of character sheets for nothing.  Is having a pad of sheets really worth the shipping/logistical cost associated with them, when the same content is available print-on-demand for free?

Honestly I don't mind the pad. Some people just don't have free access to a printer(Most of my friends and playgroup included, and I have to be careful about not being too obvious when I print things at work), so a pad like that would be a very neat thing in my situation.

I don't know the logistics of it but I'm fairly certain after all they learned from the OblivAeon KS, GTG isn't going to do anything that they can forsee will turn into a logistic/shipping nightmare for them.

I usually use digital character sheets to handle the calculations that are often needed, but SCRPG doesn't really have those. :-) So when we play, we'll likely use the pads for simplicity.

*nods*  I can see the utility of them, don't get me wrong.  It just seems like a lot of shipping weight and expense for something that's being given away for free.

Well they're bundling it into the GM Kit, so I'm guessing the cost is covered by it?

The GM Kit is $40. How is that “being given away for free”?

I think they mean that the marginal cost of the pad of sheets being added to the GM Kit is probably pretty small. Something like that is probably relatively cheap, especially compared to special-printed stuff like the 4-fold screen and the dry-erase cards.

As in, the very same sheets are available as a PDF and can be printed out at your leisure for relatively free.

Why would I want to pay for those sheets as part of a $40 GM kit, when I can already print off as many as I’d want, at minimal expense?  Fully realizing, of course, that there are other items in the GMs kit that may make it worth the $40 price tag.

Lots of people don't have access to "relatively free" printing. I know tons of people who don't own printers, or only own black and white printers but like fully colored game materials.

I also know many people who refuse to steal resources from their employers.

You are making a lot of assumptions about what resources people have access to and what people value.

That's nice; I know lots of people *with* printers.  Regardless of whether you do or not, the pad represents a charge for something that's effectively being given away of free.  If it's something you want to pay for, more power to you.  I just think it seems like adding the pads to the GM Kit adds a degree of cost on GtG's end for something that they're simultaneously providing for free.

Also, you can drop the subtle accusations of "stealing resources" from my employer; that's an assumption you're making all your own, quite incorrectly.

There is a difference between a physical item and a digital one. That seems so obvious that I shouldn't have to say it.

Would you complain the  book is overpriced because they are giving the PDF away for half that price?

The fact that YOU can't fathom anyone wanting or even needing the sheets is not an argument for them to not exist. Simply saying "the character sheets are basically free" over and over again  doesn't make it true. It costs people paper, ink, and sometimes a not insignificant amount of time if they don't own a printer (or computer which is pretty common, lots of lower income individuals have smart phones but not an actual PC these days) to print your own sheets. Again, step away from the view that printing is cheap and easy for YOU thus the product is a waste/needless expense and realize that not everyone in the world is in your position.

But they are NOT given away for free. The pad is 100 sheets of tangible. Running 100 sheets of tangible at my local UPS store is going to be about 25¢ per side for color on letter, or $0.50 per sheet, so $50. Might be able to get that down to $30 or so by using other sources, or submitting it for bulk printing. That said, if I’m wanting to fill in the data and print, the pad is of no use. If one is wanting blanks, for handwriting, the GM kit is a save over one-offs over time.

SOMEONE is paying for the ink and paper.

My cost for a roughly 4000 page cartrige on my B&W printer is $70 (brother).  About 1.7¢ per side. Plus the paper $5 for 500 sheets. 1¢ per sheet. So, about 4.4¢ per sheet, B&W.

Color inkjets are about $30 per cart, with about 1000 pages per cart, and 4 carts needed (CMYK) So $120 per 1000 pp… 12¢ per side, plus 1¢ for the page, or 25¢ per 2-sided sheet. Hmm… not so cheap. (ink sourced is XL carts for HP cart 950 & 951)

And those costs are before amortization of the printer itself.

So, understand, if you’re using the printer at work, you’re stealing up to a quarter dollar per sheet, or, alternatively, you need to declare it as taxable perquisates. (in which case, it may still be theft, if they didn’t authorize it, but at least you aren’t cheating on your taxes. Remember, Al Capone was incarcerated not for the crimes, but for not paying taxes on the proceeds…)

I feel like we’ve established that both the online version and the character sheet pad will be useful to some people, and both will be less useful to some people, based on their needs and the resources at their disposal - which, without any information to the contrary, we can assume they’re accessing legally.

That having been happily established, I think we can pretty much leave it there.

If we somehow do get the next stretchgoal of 350K, which I'm pretty confident that we'll hit since we still have a good 16+ hours to go, I'm going to be seriously considering swapping out from my 'Collector' pledge level and just pledging the exact amount for the stuff I want. The 'History of Sentinel Comics' book sounds neat and all, but I want the source gamebooks and GM stuff more, and I can't justify to myself paying more than I'm already going to...

Kickstarter won’t let you pledge after it’s over.  So if you can’t pledge before the KS is over then you’ll have to wait on them publically opening backerkit. How soon backerkit is opened after the KS ends is hard to say.

So, pledge $1 now.  That's enough that'll get you into the backer kit/pledge manager.  Then, once you have the money in-hand, you can adjust your pledge.

Now to wait for the day that GTG is ready to hand out the Character Creation chapter...

Once that happens, I'll probably see about running my friends through the starter-kit adventures with their own characters. They get why, but they weren't too keen on trying it out if the character creation rules weren't included in it.

Same boat. We did play a one shot, but my rpg friends for the most part have not played sentinels of the multiverse so getting into the roles of freedom five was a bit off putting.

Character creation rules will be the extra push I need.

That update will, assuming BackerKit is open, probably kick me into the PDF tier. (I goofed timing of a credit card billing cycle closing and ended up with two major expenses on the same statement instead of separated. Tied up disposable income for a bit.)

Say I wanted to make a size-altering hero, not that different from the likes of Sky Screper or A*t-Man. Would the Modular archetype be the one I should consider to build that kind of character?

Actually, Muerto is a divided archetype and Bunker is Modular. I’d need to read both to figure out which be more towards a Kamen Rider motif mechanically.

Probably Divided.  Muerto's three physical forms are literally Tiny, Normal, and Huge (named Minuscule, Tough, and Towering).  Although he also has the transitional Ghost form; not sure how that works in the rules.

Hey, I wouldn’t say no to the Villain and Environment generation chapters either.  ;-)

But seriously, yeah, many of us have been itching to play this game since the Starter Kit. And some companies give advance looks at books to backers - things like plaintext versions of the rules. No art. Sometimes barely any formatting. But there’s also plenty of companies that, like GTG, don’t show backers anything until it’s practically done - where there’s just enough wiggle room to fix glaring errors. And I’ve done enough freelancing in the RPG industry to see both sides of the arguement.

So as much as I was hoping that as soon GTG got the cash from kickstarter that we’d get copies of whatever it was they were using in the livesteams, I was also steeling myself to the idea that we wouldn’t see anything until around August.

Personally I find using Starter kit and char creation you wouldn't really need the core book and could make campaigns easily enough. The biggest hurdle be villains.

I'm certain with over 400+ pages vs the starter-kit, one-shots and character chapter, there's plenty of info that we're missing.

Not that people haven't already tried to reverse-engineer their own campaigns with… mixed results.
